The strength of our association has always been measured by more than the homes we build—it's reflected in the lives we impact, the communities we serve, and the willingness of our members to step up when there is a need. That spirit was on full display at our inaugural Foundation Golf Tournament this summer.

Earlier this month, we hosted our inaugural Foundation Golf Tournament at Boulder Canyon, and what a success it was! The event brought together members, partners, sponsors, and supporters for a day filled with fun, networking, and friendly competition—all while raising funds for a cause that is making a meaningful impact in our community. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who participated, sponsored, volunteered, and helped make the event possible. The generosity of our members continues to demonstrate the power of our industry when we come together for a common purpose.

The funds raised through events like this allow the Foundation to invest in workforce development, scholarships, community improvement projects, and initiatives that strengthen the future of the building industry throughout the Black Hills region. Every dollar raised helps us continue creating opportunities and making a difference where it matters most.

Looking ahead, we are excited for our Fishing Tournament and the opportunity to bring members together once again in support of the Foundation. These events not only help raise critical funds, but also showcase the strong sense of community that makes our association so special. I continue to be inspired by the dedication of our members and the passion they bring to advancing the Foundation's mission. HIRING HAS ALWAYS BEEN BROKEN. PLENTY OF HIRES IS DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Ask any contractor in the Black Hills how hiring is going and you already know the answer. You post a job, you wait, you sort through a stack of applications from people who either don't show up or don't fit, and a few months later you find yourself doing the whole thing over again. It's exhausting, it's expensive, and somewhere along the way most people just accepted that this is simply how hiring works. Corinne Perkins spent years watching that cycle play out from inside the staffing and recruiting industry, and she never once accepted it as the way things had to be.

"I've always known hiring was broken," she says. "It wasn’t until 2021 I figured out a way to fix it."

A Black Hills Girl Who Took the Long Way Home.

Corinne grew up in the Black Hills and graduated from Black Hills State University before setting out to build something of her own. She owned and operated a direct marketing firm with locations in Colorado Springs and Anchorage, Alaska, and while neither location survived, she will tell you the lessons those failures left her with were worth more than any early success could have been. That hard-won education shaped everything she has built since.

When she came back to the Black Hills, she found her way into staffing and recruiting, spending nearly five years at Adecco. That chapter confirmed something she

had always believed: placing the right person in the right job is not just a transaction. It genuinely changes lives. "When you make that ultimate long-term connection between a candidate and an employer, it changes things for both of them," she says. "When people are doing work they're actually built for, it's hard to call it work. That's what drives me in this — there is more to a person than what a piece of paper and a quick interview can say."

In 2020, COVID shut the hiring world down and Adecco closed its local branch. Corinne transitioned into digital marketing at Dot Marketing, which brought her into a close working relationship with the Black Hills Home Builders Association, where she was named Affiliate of the Year in 2024. But

the idea she had been sitting with since 2021 never stopped pulling at her. For a long time, self-doubt kept her from taking the leap. At a certain point she found herself praying hard on it, asking that if this was truly what she was supposed to do, God would open the doors. Shortly after, she was introduced to Wildfire Labs, a software acceleration program in Rapid City. From that moment, the idea that had lived only in her head started becoming something real.

"They made me realize this could actually happen," she says. "And from there, there has just been this drive that I can make this happen, and I'm not stopping." In 2024 she left Dot Marketing to build Plenty of Hires full time, and in 2025 came on part time as the association's Workforce Development Coordinator, staying close to the contractors whose hiring pain has shaped the platform from the beginning.

"You only see candidates who match with your job across eight different areas," Corinne explains. "No job descriptions, no applicant pile-up. You get matches, you connect, and you get moving."

And the thing that surprised me most? Candidates want stability more than anything, even more than pay. Employers want the exact same thing. They just had no good way to find each other.

Plenty of Hires is also built to serve the way construction actually works. Not every business operates on W-2 employees alone, and not every tradesperson is looking for a staff position. The platform is designed to connect subcontractors with the right companies as well, because good work is good work regardless of how someone is classified.

Corinne is the first to tell you the platform is still a work in progress.

The beta is young, the algorithm is still being refined, and user feedback is shaping every update.

No-shows have happened, but anyone who has hired in construction knows that is not unique to any platform or any hiring process. "We are not perfect yet, and we own that," she says.

"But through the support of our early users we are focused on capturing the right candidates and learning lessons every day, if not every hour. Every piece of feedback makes the matches better and that work does not stop." What she can promise is that employers are never left starting over. "Even if someone doesn't show up on day one, with us you always have a growing pipeline of strong-fit candidates ready to go.

Plenty of Hires spent the summer of 2025 piloting with local

employers and candidates, using their feedback to sharpen the matching algorithm before moving into a full build. The beta launched in February 2026 and has since facilitated more than 25 hires throughout the Black Hills, with employers reporting they found good candidates faster than anything they had tried before.

JP Walters of Wood Builders, described what made the experience different: "We've used other hiring platforms, and as AI has taken over it's gotten really hard to know if what you're receiving is actually from the candidate or just something AI wrote for them. What I really like about Plenty of Hires is that their process gets to the bottom of how candidates actually feel — are they going to show up on time, are they going to be a good culture fit? We want people who are not only experienced but are actually the right fit for our company."

Spencer Hattervig of Zeisler Construction, also a member, reported a successful hire within the first two days and described the process as seamless.

What Comes Next.

Plenty of Hires is focused on building depth in the Black Hills but has goals of expanding across South Dakota and into neighboring states over the next few years.

Corinne will continue to sit on the BHHBA Workforce Committee, and the construction industry remains where the platform is most deeply rooted. The problem it was built to solve exists anywhere good people are trying to find good work and good employers are trying to build strong teams.

As I write this month's update, I have just returned from the National Association of Home Builders Spring Leadership Meetings in Washington, D.C., where I had the opportunity to represent the Black Hills Home Builders Association and our members on the National level.

One of the highlights of the trip was meeting directly with members of South Dakota's congressional delegation, including Senator John Thune, Senator Mike Rounds, and Congressman Dusty Johnson. These conversations are an important opportunity to share the real-world challenges facing builders, developers, trade contractors, and housing professionals in our communities. Housing affordability remains one of the most pressing issues facing our industry. During our meetings, we discussed the need for policies that increase housing supply, reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens, and expand opportunities for homeownership. We also talked about the importance of workforce development and ensuring that future generations have pathways into the skilled trades that keep our industry moving forward.

Advocacy remains one of the most valuable benefits of membership in our association. Whether we are working with local municipalities, state legislators, or our federal representatives, your association is committed to ensuring the voice of the building industry is heard at every level.

Back here at home, our association continues to stay busy. Our committees, volunteers, and members are driving initiatives that strengthen our industry and support our communities. I am continually inspired by the passion and engagement of our membership.

Fifty years ago, Hult Homes opened its doors with a commitment to quality craftsmanship and serving the community. Today, that same commitment remains at the heart of the company as they celebrate an incredible milestone: 50 years in business.

And while founder Paul Hult may not have expected the company to still be thriving five decades later —he jokes he never imagined he'd even be alive 50 years after starting the business—the team is proud to continue building homes and lasting relationships throughout the Black Hills.

FROM RESTORATION TO NEW HOMES

For many years, Hult Homes specialized in fire and flood restoration, helping families rebuild after A CABIN UNLIKE ANY OTHER difficult times.

About a decade ago, the company returned to the One project still stands out among the hundreds Black Hills and shifted its focus to building new completed over the years. homes, with an emphasis on workforce housing. After meeting a family at a BHHBA Home Show, Since then, Hult Homes has completed projects Hult Homes was asked to build a "cabin" near across the region—from Hot Springs to Lead and Terry Peak.

STAYING TRUE TO THEIR VALUES The housing industry has changed dramatically over the last 50 years, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. Demand increased, prices rose, and homes became more important than ever.

Through it all, Hult Homes has stayed true to its motto: "Where Quality and Construction Meet."

Paul Hult has always told his team: "Whether we're building a multi-million-dollar project or an entrylevel home, I refuse to build something I can't be proud to put my name on."

LOOKING AHEAD Reaching 50 years is both humbling and exciting for the Hult Homes team.

"It's humbling to realize that after 50 years, we're still relevant," they say. "It's scary to realize that 50 years is a LONG time when it feels like it was only yesterday."

As for the future?

"We look forward to celebrating our 100th anniversary 50 years from now—or retiring. Whichever comes first."

While many know WSDCA for its housing programs, the organization also provides workforce development, food security initiatives, healthcare navigation, employment assistance, and life skills coaching to thousands of residents every year.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT- From apprenticeship opportunities to employment support and workforce training, WSDCA helps individuals gain valuable skills and connect with meaningful careers that support long-term selfsufficiency.

AGING IN PLACE - Many seniors want to remain in the homes they love. WSDCA helps make that possible through accessibility improvements such as ramps, grab bars, safety modifications, and other upgrades that promote independence.

A TRUSTED COMMUNITY RESOURCE -WSDCA maintains a Platinum Transparency rating through Candid/GuideStar and a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator, demonstrating its commitment to accountability and responsible stewardship of donor funds WHY THEY MATTER - When families have access to safe housing, reliable employment, nutritious food, and community support, entire communities become stronger. WSDCA's programs help create those opportunities every day.

As community needs evolve, WSDCA continues to adapt and expand its services.
