Dear Neighbors,

When it comes to Fourth of July celebrations, there is no need to leave the gates to celebrate America’s independence in style. The Blackhawk Country Club’s annual Fourth of July Extravaganza is one of my family’s favorite events in the community. We love seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces as they enjoy the carnival rides and visit with friends — but our favorite part is cuddling up on a blanket and watching the spectacular show light up the sky after dark. Our community Independence Day celebration is just one of the many ways we come together to show our patriotism and celebrate all that makes this country great.

This month, we are also celebrating something a little closer to home — and equally worth cheering for. Our cover story introduces you to Teens2Seniors, a remarkable nonprofit founded right here in Blackhawk by 17-year-old Luc Gutmann. What started as a deeply personal mission to spend more time with his grandmother — who was diagnosed with dementia — has grown into something truly beautiful. Luc and his team of seven teen volunteers visit Sunrise Senior Living monthly to play games, build connections and bring a little light into the lives of seniors who need it most. They came to play cards. They stayed to change lives.

It is the kind of story that reminds us why we love this community so much.

We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful place we call home. If you have a story to tell, please reach out — I would love to hear from you at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Wishing your family a very happy Fourth of July!

Blackhawk Living Magazine is devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Meet Teens2Seniors:

They came to play cards. They stayed to change lives.

There is a moment Luc Gutmann keeps coming back to. He is sitting at a table at Sunrise Senior Living in Danville, cards spread out between him and a group of seniors, and no one wants to leave. The game is Memory—fitting, given where they are—and the seniors are asking for just one more round. Again. And again.

“Seeing that they don’t want us to leave,” Luc says simply, “that tells me everything.”

Luc is 17 years old. He has lived in Blackhawk since he was three. And in the fall of 2025, he did something that most teenagers never think to do — he founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to bridging the gap between teens and seniors, one card game at a time. He called it Teens2Seniors. And what started as a deeply personal mission to spend more time with his grandmother is quietly becoming something much bigger.

A Story That Starts With GiGi

To understand Teens2Seniors, you have to understand GiGi. GiGi is Luc’s grandmother, and she was diagnosed with dementia. For years, Luc had been making regular visits to spend time with her—not because anyone asked him to, but because he wanted to. When his grandfather, PaPa Gutmann, passed away in January 2025, the family made the decision to move GiGi from Santa Barbara to Blackhawk to be close to family. She stayed with the Gutmanns for the first week and then moved into Sunrise Senior Living’s memory care unit. “I was sad to see her leave,” Luc recalls. “But I understood she needed more care. I just wanted to find a way to keep spending time with her.”

During his frequent visits to Sunrise, Luc noticed something that stayed with him. In the hallways and common rooms, he saw seniors who looked lonely. Faces that lit up when someone walked through the door and dimmed again when they left. He also noticed the volunteer sign-up sheets posted in the lobby.

The idea was simple, the way the best ideas always are. He was already there. His friends cared. Why not make it official?

“When we come to visit, their eyes brighten. They almost find teens as entertainment. And honestly—we feel the same way about them.”

Luc, Lexie and Ari with a few seniors from Sunrise.

Building Something Real

Luc didn’t have to look far for his founding team. His friends Valentina and Massimo Deneroff had their own grandmother living with dementia, and they understood immediately why this mattered. Lexie Lowe and Ari Burjis joined because, as Luc puts it, “they just loved the idea.” Mila Gutmann and Olivia Liesch rounded out the group. Seven teenagers, most of them Blackhawk residents, united by something simple and profound: the belief that showing up matters.

Today, Teens2Seniors visits Sunrise once a month as a group. Sunrise sets up tables in the main room; the seniors gather, and the teens run two or three tables of card games—typically Memory, a game that is both fun and gently therapeutic for residents with cognitive challenges. The visits run one to three hours depending on how many teens are available, and Teens2Seniors is listed in the facility’s daily activities pamphlet so the seniors know to expect them.

Luc himself goes every single week, personally, to see GiGi. The moments he describes from those visits are equal parts heartwarming and quietly profound. There is GiGi, who asks Luc why he is there every single time he arrives—but the moment the games begin, she is smiling, proud, and telling everyone around the table that this is her grandson. There is James, a wildly competitive gentleman who gets genuinely grumpy when he loses — “He reminds me of myself,” Luc laughs — and who probably does not remember Luc between visits but plays every round like the championship is on the line. There was the time a senior wanted to dance with Massimo after the game ended. And the time another senior stormed off pouting after losing to one of the ladies at his table. “They behave no differently than teens,” Luc says, with a grin that suggests this surprised him more than he expected.

“We all want to win while having fun.”

“Teens make the seniors feel youthful again. And the seniors make the teens feel grateful. At the end of the day, we realize we are all the same.”

What the Seniors Are Teaching the Teens

Ask Luc what this experience has changed in him, and he answers without hesitation: patience.

“Most of these seniors have memory issues and will ask things over and over,” he says. “Watching them get frustrated can be heartbreaking. But I also see the progression of human life. It makes me think about what it will be like when my parents get older. When I get older.”

For a 16-year-old, that is a remarkable thing to sit with—and it speaks to something deeper about what Teens2Seniors is really doing. Yes, it brings joy to seniors who spend too many hours alone. Yes, it gives teenagers a meaningful, concrete way to give back to their community. But it also does something

Photos provided by the Gutman Family

“A nonprofit connecting teens and seniors to build memories.”

rarer and harder to manufacture: it builds empathy across generations in a way that changes both sides.

“You realize that no matter what age, we all crave relationships,” Luc says. “Hanging out and playing games is so simple, yet so gratifying.”

His classmates have noticed too. When he tells them about Teens2Seniors, they want to know when the next visit is so they can come along.

What Comes Next

Luc has a vision for where Teens2Seniors goes from here, and it is ambitious. He wants to start local, grow regionally, and eventually take the model national. He envisions a booking platform where senior homes can list their events and teen volunteers can simply log in and

sign up—removing the manual email coordination that currently holds things together with string and good intentions. An app. A real infrastructure.

“We will need to raise money for that,” he acknowledges practically. “To build out the website platform and the app.” But the goal is clear, and the foundation is real.

For now, though, the most important thing is the thing that has always been the most important thing: showing up. Sitting down at the table. Dealing the cards. Watching GiGi smile.

“Find something personal,” Luc says, when asked what he would tell other Blackhawk teens thinking about starting something of their own. “Something you are passionate about. For me, it’s my grandma. She is someone I cherish, and the time I spend with her is invaluable.”

Why Local Businesses Need An Online Listings Ser vice

Making a Splash at Blackhawk: Aquatics for Every Age and Stage

Inaccurate or outdated online information can severely impact

Trust Report showed that 62% of consumers would avoid using a business if they found incorrect information online.1

As summer arrives at Blackhawk Country Club, there is no better place to be than at the Sports Complex pool. From our youngest swimmers taking their first strokes to adults pursuing fitness and friendship, the aquatics program continues to be one of the most vibrant and active parts of club life.

Outdated information leads to many challenges for local businesses

Leading the way this season is our HOX Swim Team, which is already deep into another exciting summer campaign. With nearly 220 swimmers representing Blackhawk, the HOX continue to embody teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitive excellence. Throughout the season, swimmers participate in practices, dual meets, championship competitions, social events, and team traditions that create lifelong memories. Whether chasing personal bests or cheering on teammates from the deck, HOX swimmers are building confidence, discipline, and friendships that extend far beyond the pool.

Customers may show up when you’re closed, leading to frustration, loss of trust, and potentially a negative review.

Mismatched info across platforms can confuse search algorithms, reducing your search ranking and overall visibility.

Managing dozens of individual listings is a headache and takes time away from running your business.

Inconsistent or missing details lead to fewer customer interactions and missed revenue opportunities.

Our future HOX stars are getting their start through MiniHOX, a developmental swim program designed specifically for children ages 3–6. Mini-HOX introduces young swimmers to the fundamentals of competitive swimming in a fun, encouraging, and age-appropriate environment. Coaches focus on water confidence, basic stroke skills, and learning through play, helping children develop a love for swimming while preparing them for future participation on the swim team.

An online listings service ensures that your business data, such as your name, address, phone number, hours, and website, is accurate across search engines, maps and directories.

Source: 1 https://www.brightlocal.com/research/local-business-discovery-trust-report/

Of course, the pool is much more than just practices and competitions. Throughout the summer, the Sports Complex becomes a gathering place for families and friends. Popular social events include pool parties, family swim nights, and outdoor movie nights where members can relax poolside under the stars. These events showcase what makes Blackhawk special—a community where neighbors become friends and memories are made together.

Adults looking to stay active have plenty of opportunities as well. Our Masters Swimming program welcomes swimmers of all ability levels, from former competitors to fitness-minded adults looking for a challenging and rewarding workout. Structured practices provide expert coaching, improved fitness, and a supportive community of fellow swimmers.

Accurate business listings can give companies a competitive edge

For members seeking a lower-impact workout, Blackhawk offers both deep-water and shallow-water aerobics classes. These popular programs combine cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility work while taking advantage of the natural resistance and joint-friendly benefits of the water. Participants consistently praise the classes for being effective, energizing, and fun.

Consistent information builds credibility and trust with new and existing customers, giving them peace of mind to choose your business over others.

Accurate listings lead to increased engagement and improved search rankings, boosting your local visibility.

Easier updates from a single dashboard allow businesses to conveniently manage their online information with just a few clicks, saving valuable time for owners

Sometimes, however, the best way to enjoy the aquatics facilities is simply to relax. Members can spend the afternoon lounging poolside, cooling off with a refreshing cocktail, catching up with friends, or enjoying a freshly made pizza from Hawk’s Nest while the kids splash nearby. With beautiful surroundings, exceptional amenities, and a welcoming atmosphere, the pool truly serves as the centerpiece of summer at Blackhawk.

When your info is up-to-date, more people will reach out, and stop by, which can directly boost your bottom line.

Whether you’re racing in a swim meet, introducing a young child to the water, participating in a fitness class, or simply soaking up the sunshine with family and friends, there is something for everyone in Blackhawk. We look forward to seeing you at the pool this summer!

Online listings services help local businesses stay competitive, visible, and credible. Don’t let wrong information limit your growth.

Summer Safety Tips

A little preparation goes a long way — here’s what to know before you head out

Summer is in full swing, and our regional parks are the perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures. But before you pack up the sunscreen and head for the trails, take a few minutes to brush up on heat and water safety. A little preparation can make all the difference.

Beat the Heat

When temperatures climb, the outdoors can go from refreshing to risky quickly. During excessive heat warnings, plan your activities for the cooler parts of the day and avoid strenuous exertion between 10am and 7pm when the sun is at its strongest. Seek out shady spots to rest and drink plenty of water throughout the day — and skip the alcohol and caffeine, which can actually make the heat’s effects on your body worse.

Dress smart too. Lightweight, light-colored clothing and a widebrim hat to protect your face and neck go a long way. And please — never leave infants, children, elderly or infirm individuals, or pets unattended in a parked car, even if it’s in the shade.

Speaking of pets, if your four-legged family members are joining you, carry water for them. Water from streams and ponds isn’t always safe to drink, and on the hottest days, your pets may be better off staying cool at home.

Water Safety: What Every Family Should Know

Open water is one of summer’s greatest joys — and one of its greatest risks. Whenever possible, swim only in areas with a lifeguard on duty and keep a close, active eye on your children at all times. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, even in as little as a foot of water. Children 12 and under must be

accompanied by a responsible individual 16 or older in designated swimming areas.

If you have any doubt about your swimming abilities, wear a life jacket — and boaters should always have one on. Not sure where to find one? Regional Park swim facilities offer free loaner life jackets, so there’s no excuse to skip this simple safety step.

And whether you’re swimming or boating, skip the alcohol entirely. It impairs judgment and reaction time in ways that can turn a fun day into a dangerous one.

Above all, obey posted rules and signs — they exist to keep everyone safe and having fun.

High Desert Luxury at the Pronghorn Club

When the summer heat hits the valley, Blackhawk golfers know it’s time to start scouting the perfect destination for a quick golf road trip or weekend getaway. Look no further than Central Oregon’s high desert. Nestled between Bend and Redmond, Pronghorn Club at Juniper Preserve has evolved into the Pacific Northwest’s premier golf sanctuary, and it is a perfect match for the Blackhawk community.

The contrast with the coastal side of the state is immediate. While Portland deals with plenty of rain, this high-desert oasis enjoys a warm, dry climate from May through October, averaging just eleven inches of rainfall per year. Framed by majestic, snow-capped views of the Cascade Mountains, the resort is surrounded by protected Bureau of Land Management property, making it exceptionally quiet, secluded, and pristine.

The property itself is highly impressive. A striking, 55,000-square-foot stone clubhouse serves as the center of the resort, offering an elegant but welcoming vibe. Accommodations are tailored perfectly for a weeklong stay or a weekend retreat, ranging from modern luxury rooms at the Huntington Lodge to expansive, Mediterranean-style vacation villas.

For the serious player, the practice facilities are spectacular. The property features a massive, perfectly manicured driving range and a dedicated short-game complex. Here, you can practice almost any scenario, from standard chips to 60-yard pitches out of premium rough, fairways, and pristine bunkers. Pronghorn stands out as the only golf community in the West to feature side-by-side masterpieces designed by Tom Fazio and Jack Nicklaus. While the Fazio course is an exclusive, member-only retreat, the equally brilliant Jack Nicklaus Signature Course is open to resort guests. Consistently ranked

among the top public courses in the nation by Golf Magazine, it delivers a championship experience alongside top-tier service.

The conditioning of the Nicklaus course is extraordinary, featuring flawless, tournament-ready bentgrass from tee to green. As a traditional desert-style layout, it presents a brilliant mix of holes that are both visually beautiful and fun to play.

The design emphasizes exciting risk-reward choices, highlighted by a collection of short, thrilling par-4s at the 4th, 12th, and 13th holes. The 12th hole, playing just 280 yards from the middle tees, offers a tempting opportunity to go for the green, though a highly precise wedge is mandatory to hold the elevated putting surface. The 13th is equally memorable, requiring a precise 330-yard journey around a sweeping lake that hugs the entire right side, finishing at a heavily bunkered green backed by a dramatic rock outcropping. The back nine reaches a high point with a fantastic collection of par-5s, punctuated by the signature 15th hole. The course winds through the largest ancient Western Juniper stand in the world, where weathered “ghost

Picturesque Rock, Water, Sand
Unique Ghost Trees

trees” create a dramatic silhouette against the desert sky. While Pronghorn provides a complete luxury escape, the broader Bend area offers an abundance of summer lifestyle pursuits. The region boasts excellent dining, fly-fishing, hiking, and whitewater rafting. For those planning a longer itinerary, neighboring courses like Tetherow and Sunriver make the area a true golfer’s paradise. If you are looking to trade the summer heat of the valley for crisp desert mornings and flawless turf, Pronghorn delivers an unforgettable getaway.

Perfect High-Desert Warm Up

Mid-Year Tax Checkup: Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Review Your Finances

As we reach the middle of the year, many individuals and business owners are focused on their day-to-day responsibilities and long-term financial goals. However, July is also an ideal time to conduct a mid-year tax and financial review.

Waiting until tax season to evaluate your finances often results in missed tax-saving opportunities, unexpected tax liabilities, and unnecessary stress. A mid-year checkup allows you to identify potential issues early and make informed decisions before year-end.

Some important areas to review include:

• Income and Investments – Review your income sources, investment activity, retirement distributions, and capital gains. Understanding how these items may impact your tax situation can help you avoid surprises next April.

Your Trusted Blackhawk Tax Advisors

• Estimated Tax Payments – Retirees, investors, self-employed individuals, and business owners may be required to make estimated tax payments throughout the year. A mid-year review can help ensure you are paying the appropriate amount and avoid underpayment penalties.

• Retirement Planning – Consider whether you are maximizing contributions to retirement accounts or, if retired, managing required distributions efficiently. Proper planning can help reduce taxes and preserve wealth.

• Charitable Giving and Deductions – Keep track of charitable contributions, medical expenses, and other potentially deductible items. Proper documentation throughout the year makes tax filing easier and more accurate.

• Business and Rental Activities – For those who own businesses or rental properties, a review of income, expenses, and recordkeeping can help identify tax-saving opportunities and improve financial management.

Proactive tax planning is always more effective than reactive tax management. By reviewing your financial situation now, you may be able to reduce tax liability, improve cash flow, and avoid yearend surprises.

If you have not yet reviewed your financial and/or tax position for 2026, now is an excellent time to consult with our team at EBA develop a strategy for the remainder of the year!

Paint a Bamboo Hairbrush for a Summer Craft Project

If you’re looking for an easy, fun, and rewarding craft project, painting a bamboo hairbrush is a perfect choice. It’s simple enough for beginners, and you may already have many of the supplies at home.

Recently, my sisters, nieces, aunts, cousins, and I gathered for a fun-filled afternoon of crafting. The day was filled with laughter, delicious food, and a variety of creative projects.

While some family members worked on embroidery, my niece, my nephew’s wife, and I spent our time decorating bamboo hairbrushes. Our family is full of talented and creative people, and we’re always finding new projects to make together.

The finished hairbrushes turned out beautifully, and I’ve included a few photos of our creations. Each brush reflected its creator’s unique style, from bright summer florals to colorful geometric patterns. If you’d like to make your own painted bamboo hairbrush, you can find the complete project instructions at the link below.

colormadehappy.com/how-to-decorate-a-hair-brush/

We’re already planning our next craft adventure! Next month, we’ll be creating a festive Halloween wreath, so be sure to watch for project details in the coming weeks.

Happy crafting!

Summer Starts Close to Home

Some summer memories do not begin with a plane ticket or a packed suitcase. As June arrives and the days start stretching into longer evenings again, I found myself looking back at these sunset photos from the Falls Club in Blackhawk, taken in 2020, when the hills had turned their familiar golden shade and the evening clouds softened the sky. They may not be the most perfect photos, but they feel special now — a small glimpse of Blackhawk summer from a year when even familiar views meant more. Framed by bottlebrush, oleander, yellow calla lilies, and small daisy-like blooms, the view felt like a reminder that beauty often shows up quietly, right where we already are.

In Blackhawk, summer has a way of arriving gently — through warmer walks, golden hills, flowers along the hillside, and sunsets that make you pause for a moment before heading home. A simple evening near the club, the glow over the Diablo range, or a sky caught between clouds can be enough to slow us down. Sometimes summer starts close to home — not with a big plan, but with a familiar view we finally take the time to notice.

Archer Hotel Napa

Recently, we had the pleasure of staying at the beautifully appointed Archer Hotel Napa, a sophisticated boutique hotel located in the heart of downtown Napa. Opened in 2017, the hotel features 183 thoughtfully designed guest rooms, many offering private balconies or cozy fireplaces that add warmth and charm to the experience. The hotel is also pet-friendly, offers ADA-accessible accommodations, and provides valet parking for added convenience.

One of the hotel’s most unforgettable highlights is the spectacular Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar. With sweeping views of Napa Valley, it is the perfect setting for morning coffee, leisurely brunch, casual bites, or sunset cocktails. We especially enjoyed the lively energy of guests relaxing and celebrating in such a beautiful atmosphere. After a day of wine tasting, it truly feels like

the perfect place to unwind.

Step outside the hotel and you are immediately surrounded by Napa’s vibrant collection of restaurants, tasting rooms, boutiques, and nightlife — all within easy walking distance. The entire downtown atmosphere feels welcoming, energetic, and wonderfully restorative to the soul.

Most impressive of all, however, was the exceptional hospitality. From the moment you arrive, the staff goes above and beyond to make you feel genuinely valued and cared for. Their warmth and attention to detail elevate the entire experience.

Archer Hotel Napa is truly a “must experience” destination for any Napa Valley getaway. The only downside is having to leave — although you quickly realize you will absolutely be returning.

Orange Rind Custard

A famous Spanish Dessert, Custard Style (Flan De Naranja)

Serve: 8

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

F. Use a 9 ½-inch diameter (enameled cast iron) flan dish

• 1 ¼ cup turbinado sugar (raw sugar), divided

• 2 tablespoons of water

• 3 cups of whole milk

• ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

• ½ teaspoon almond extract

• 3 whole eggs

• 4 egg yolks

• 1 tablespoon orange rind, freshly grated

GARNISH:

• 8 oz. strawberries, slices and 1 cup blueberries; to glaze strawberries.

In a saucepan/skillet, heat 1 cup sugar over medium-low heat for 2 minutes; when it starts to liquefy, gradually add 2 tablespoons water as you are stirring; simmer until sugar is completely dissolved and syrup is smooth and slightly thickened. Remove from heat, pour into flan pan and cover the bottom evenly; let it cool.

In clean saucepan combine milk, vanilla, and almond extract, and add remaining ¼ cup sugar. Over medium-low heat; simmer about 8-10 minutes stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved (do not let milk-mixture boil). Remove from the heat, strain milk-mixture through fine mesh strainer, and cool to room temperature.

In a large bowl slightly beat whole eggs and egg yolks, gradually add strained milk (¼ cup at a time) as you are whisking until thoroughly mixed (for 1-2 minutes) and stir in orange rind.

Pour this mixture over caramel syrup in flan pan. Place flans pan on middle rack of oven (use Bain-Marie). After 5 minutes reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees F. Bake for 45-50 minutes/until custard just set. Remove from oven and let it cool.

Cover the flan pan and refrigerate overnight. Garnish with fruits prior to serving.

Where Wild Things Heal

For 71 years, Lindsay Wildlife Experience has been connecting our community with nature — and its biggest chapter is just beginning

Tuckedin the heart of Walnut Creek, there is a place where a golden eagle might be just inches from your face, where injured hawks and owls find a second chance at life, and where thousands of children discover for the very first time that the natural world is something worth protecting. That place is Lindsay Wildlife Experience — and chances are, if you have kids or grandkids in the Blackhawk community, it has already left a mark on them.

What began 71 years ago as one man’s passion project has grown into something truly remarkable. Alexander Lindsay started simply — sharing his curiosity and love for the natural world from his garage — and that spirit of wonder has never left the organization. Today, Lindsay Wildlife Experience is both a beloved interactive museum and the first wildlife rehabilitation hospital ever established in the United States. It is a Contra Costa County landmark, a community treasure and a lifeline for the animals that share our region.

Every year, Lindsay serves more than 50,000 children and adults who come to experience live wild animals up close and learn what it means to be responsible stewards of the environment. And behind the scenes, their wildlife hospital treats more than 5,000 injured and orphaned wild animals annually — from songbirds and raptors to foxes and beyond — cared for by a deeply dedicated team of staff and volunteers whose passion for the work is nothing short of inspiring.

“The group of volunteers that care for the animals and share their knowledge is especially inspiring,” says Marc Merino, Lindsay’s Marketing and Media Relations Manager. “The work of education and treating wildlife that need assistance is an incredibly rewarding mission to be a part of.”

Throughout the year, Lindsay’s animal ambassadors venture out into the community — turning up at local events to bring the natural world a little closer to home and spark curiosity in people of all ages.

An Exciting New Chapter

This fall, Lindsay Wildlife Experience will embark on the largest single expansion in its 71-year history. In March, the organization broke ground on Ky & Laura’s Nature Cove — a stunning $2 million immersive outdoor exhibit that will become a permanent home for seven non-releasable birds of prey, including a majestic golden eagle. The new space will feature California native plants, comfortable seating areas, an ADA-accessible trail and children’s play structures, creating a multisensory outdoor experience for visitors of all ages and abilities.

“For more than 70 years, Lindsay Wildlife Experience has been the place to connect people with wildlife to inspire responsibility and respect for the world we share,” said Janet Kozlowski, Interim Executive Director. “Today we are ensuring the organization’s mission soars for future generations.”

A visit to Lindsay Wildlife Experience is more than a day out — it is a reminder that the natural world is extraordinary, that it needs our care, and that all of us have a role to play in protecting it.

Lindsay Wildlife Experience is located in Walnut Creek. Learn more at lindsaywildlife.org or follow along at @lindsaywildlife.

SUMMER JEWELRY CARE: Keep Your Sparkle All Season Long

Summer in Danvile brings sunshine, poolside afternoons, outdoor adventures, and special celebrations. While it’s the perfect season to wear your favorite jewelry, warmer weather and increased activity can also expose your pieces to damage. A few simple precautions can help keep your jewelry looking beautiful for years to come!

Sunscreen and Jewelry

Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin, but it can leave a film on diamonds, gemstones, and precious metals, making them appear dull and less brilliant. Apply sunscreen before putting on your jewelry whenever possible and allow it to absorb fully.

Think Twice Before Swimming

Whether you’re enjoying a backyard pool, a resort vacation, or a day at the lake, it’s best to remove your jewelry before swimming.

Cold water can cause fingers to shrink, making rings easier to lose. Chlorine, found in pools and hot tubs, is particularly harmful to jewelry and can weaken certain precious metals over time, potentially affecting prongs and settings. Saltwater can also leave deposits that impact both gemstones and metal surfaces.

Protect Jewelry During Intensive Activities

Summer activities such as gardening, hiking, golf, pickleball, boating, and exercise can put unexpected stress on jewelry. Repetitive gripping of tools, sports equipment, bike handles or weights can place pressure on rings, causing metal to bend or warp over time. These forces can also loosen prongs and increase the risk of losing a stone.

Outdoor activities may also lead to scratches, dents, and accidental impacts. If you’re planning any activity that involves heavy lifting, sports, yard work, or extensive use of your hands, consider removing your jewelry beforehand.

Travel Smart

When traveling, store jewelry in a dedicated travel case to prevent scratching and tangling. Avoid tossing pieces loosely into purses or luggage, and consider photographing valuable items before departure for insurance purposes.

Schedule a Summer Jewelry Checkup

Just as we schedule wellness visits, jewelry benefits from regular professional inspections. Prongs can loosen, clasps can wear down, and small issues can develop long before they’re visible.

A professional cleaning removes sunscreen residue, lotions, and everyday buildup while restoring sparkle and allowing a jeweler to identify potential concerns before they become costly repairs. At Padis Jewelry, we are always happy to provide complimentary jewelry cleaning and inspections to help keep your favorite pieces looking their best.

Jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed. With a little extra care during the summer months, your treasured pieces can continue shining through every vacation, celebration, and Napa Valley adventure for years to come. Visit us at our downtown Napa location for your complimentary jewelry cleaning and for maintenance We wish you a wonderful and fun-filled summer!
