Meet Joi True: The Woman Bringing Couture to Blackhawk

If you’ve ever noticed a striking jacket at a local gathering or dinner—elegant, distinctive, and unlike anything in a typical boutique—you may already have seen the work of Blackhawk resident and designer Joi True.

True is the designer behind TrueJoi Couture, a limited-edition jacket collection she designs from her home in Blackhawk. Her pieces are known for distinctive textiles and elegant tailoring. Many feature fabrics sourced from around the world with silhouettes designed to be both flattering and easy to wear.

But the idea didn’t begin as a business. It started with Joi looking for the perfect jacket for herself. “I wanted something comfortable, beautifully made, and expressive,” she explains. “Something you could wear during the day with jeans and then dress up at night. I couldn’t find that combination— so I started designing it.”

That idea of versatility still guides her work. TrueJoi Couture jackets are designed to move seamlessly from daytime to evening—equally at home over denim and boots as they are paired with heels and a dress.

Rooted in Blackhawk

Although Joi moved to Blackhawk in 2019, her connection to the area goes back much further. “It had been my dream to live here since the 1980s, when I was a student at Berkeley,” she says.

While house-hunting, she knocked on a neighbor’s door and ended up chatting for nearly half an hour. Before she had even moved in, she was invited to the annual block party.

“That’s when I knew I had found the right street,” she recalls.

Today she’s part of the rhythms of neighborhood life—block parties, book club gatherings, and the occasional pickleball game.

The Jacket That Started It All

TrueJoi Couture began during a deeply personal moment in Joi’s life.

Her stepmother, Becky, stayed with her while preparing for cancer surgery. With encouragement from a Fox Creek neighbor who is an oncology nurse practitioner, Becky decided to undergo treatment locally. During those quiet weeks at home, the two turned to creativity. Becky, a lifelong textile artist with extensive garmentconstruction expertise, helped bring Joi’s design ideas to life.

Together they created a jacket—bold, beautiful, and full of meaning.

Soon afterward, Joi wore it to Jason Momoa’s tequila launch event in Danville. A woman admired it so much that she insisted on buying it on the spot.

“She literally bought the jacket right off my back,” Joi says with a laugh.

Months later, the same thing happened again in West Hollywood.

“That’s when I realized women really connected with the design,” she says.

A Fabric First Design Philosophy

A love of textiles plays a central role in Joi’s design process. She sources textiles from around the world— Parisian brocades, patterned jacquards, and vibrant cottons often inspire the design itself.

Joi sketches the designs while Becky develops the patterns and oversees construction. Because many of the fabrics are produced in limited quantities, the jackets are made in very small numbers.

“In a world where so much fashion is mass-produced, people appreciate something individual,” Joi says. rings its own character, and each jacket becomes part of that narrative.

A Brand Beginning to Grow

What began as a personal design project has gradually grown into TrueJoi Couture—something Joi continues to build alongside her career.

“If a neighbor feels great wearing one of my jackets, that’s the ultimate compliment.”

By day, Joi works as a pharmaceutical lawyer. Evenings and weekends often become creative time—sourcing textiles, refining designs, and developing new pieces.

Her goal is to grow TrueJoi Couture thoughtfully through select boutiques and curated retail platforms that celebrate independent designers.

A Jacket That Holds a Story

Joi’s favorite piece remains the first jacket she and Becky created—a blackand-gold brocade woven with whimsical dragonflies made from fabric sourced from a historic weaving house.

For Joi, the jacket represents resilience, creativity, and the beginning of something new.

“Style should be fun and fearless,” she says. “Each piece is unique - like the women who wear it.”

If you notice a beautiful jacket around Blackhawk, there’s a good chance it’s TrueJoi Couture.

Ask it came from, and you may hear the same answer:

“From a neighbor.”

Copper Valley Niner Trip #2

Fruits with Caramel Sauce

Serves 4

Caramel-sauce (syrup)

• ¼ cup turbinado sugar

• ½ cup organic sweet white wine

• 1 teaspoon sweet butter

• ¼ cup milk

• 2 tablespoons peppermint leaves, chopped

• 1 teaspoon organic, sweet cocoa powder Fruits

• 2 bananas, peeled, sliced

• 2 mangoes, peeled, pitted, sliced bite size

• 2 clementines (mandarin orange) peeled, sectioned

• 1½ cups strawberries, cleaned, pat dried

• ½ cup strained yogurt OR whipping cream (optional)

In a heavy bottom, small saucepan heated on medium heat, sprinkle sugar and allow it to turn a golden amber color and caramelized. Immediately remove from the heat (so the syrup does not burn) and turn off the heat.

Gradually, add wine from the corner of the saucepan. Turn heat to low medium and bring contents to a simmer. Stir and simmer about 4-5 minutes until mixture slightly thickens and is reduced to half its original volume.

Stir in butter and milk. Turn off the heat and continue stirring until caramel-sauce cools. Stir in mint leaves and cocoa powder just before serving (to preserve their freshness).

Add 2 tablespoons of caramel sauce to each serving plate in an attractive pattern; arrange bananas, mangoes, clementine, and strawberries on top of sauce pattern. Serve with a small bowl of yogurt or whipped cream on the side.

Terrie Gleason Brings Joy One Cake at a Time

When you think about changing a child’s life, frosting and sprinkles may not be the first tools that come to mind. But for Blackhawk resident and volunteer Terrie Gleason, baking has become a powerful way to bring joy, comfort, and a sense of celebration to children who need it most.

Terrie volunteers with Cake4Kids.org, a nonprofit organization founded in 2010 in Sunnyvale, California. What began as a small community effort to provide free birthday cakes to foster children and at-risk youth in the San Francisco Bay Area has since grown into a nationwide network of bakers. Today, thousands of homemade cakes are delivered across the United States each year—all crafted with love by volunteers.

Discovering a New Purpose Through Baking

Terrie first joined Cake4Kids in 2019. After years of making fun, simple cakes for her own children, she found herself missing the joy that came from baking something special.

“When my kids were little, I used to bake very basic ‘themed’ cakes for them from a box mix with canned icing,” she shared. With her children grown, she decided to look for a way to use her skills to help others—and that search led her to Cake4Kids.

“Terrie has baked more than 35 cakes, delivering them to shelters, crisis centers, and community programs.”

She admits her baking journey started modestly. “I started out slowly, still using a box mix and canned icing, but quickly evolved to making cakes and buttercream frosting from scratch! I even learned about how to use fondant from YouTube.”

Since then, Terrie has baked more than 35 cakes, delivering them to shelters, crisis centers, and community programs. She typically bakes every three months, choosing requests that fit her skills but still challenge her creativity.

A Mission Filled With Meaning

Cake4Kids operates differently from many volunteer organizations. Bakers rarely meet the children who receive their cakes; instead, they drop off the finished creations with caseworkers. But on rare occasions, the volunteers receive messages of gratitude from families—and those messages mean the world.

Terrie recalls one especially moving thank-you note. A young girl’s mother wrote to tell her that the edible butterflies Terrie had placed on the cake carried a deeply personal significance. “The child had lost her sister, and they always said her soul flies freely like a butterfly,” Terrie explained. “She had asked for flowers, but adding the butterflies was just a random thought on my part. Who would have known how touching and meaningful that would have been to the child and her family? Wow!” Moments like these remind Terrie why she continues to volunteer. “That’s why we do this very meaningful work,” she said.

A Call to the Community

Terrie hopes more local residents will consider joining the organization. “You do not need to be a professional baker,” she emphasized. “Just have the desire to help a child on their special day.”

For Terrie, a little flour, sugar, and creativity have transformed into something much bigger—a way to bring happiness to children who deserve to feel celebrated. And in doing so, she has become a shining example of kindness and generosity in our community.

Full Swing Clinic – March 5

Heard from Tee to Green

Our last play day in February was at the Falls Course on February 26th, and it was a spectacularly sunny day that brought our ladies out to play some great golf with friends.

Winners from the day were:

1st place - Kobi Enochian, Fillo Carathimas, Shirley Lowes & Blind Draw - 87

2nd place – Paula Hamra, Aly Baker, Karin King and Wendy Eschner - 90

Chip Ins – Sung-Jin Ingriselli (hole 8) Shirley Lowes twice (hole 18 and 11), Fillo Carathimas (hole 4)

We had no playday on March 5th due to the Lakeside course aeration, but that didn’t stop the fun for several of the ladies who showed up for Gideon and Will’s Full Swing Clinic. The clinic started on the 18th tee box with instruction from Gideon and Will on how best to hit a driver. There were some good tips each of us took away from that. We then proceeded to each hit several drives, then go down to the front of the lake and hit shots over the water where we got more tips on how to hit that shot.

New Member Orientation

March 5

Following the full swing clinic, our New Member Orientation was held in the Lakeside Clubhouse Boardroom. The Orientation was led by our Membership Chair, Denise Benger. Our new members in attendance were Deanna Hsieh, Shelley Lober, Wendy Eschner and Eunice Xiao. Several board members and BWGA members were also in attendance to meet the new members and to learn more about scoring on golf genius, which Gideon explained in detail. For anyone thinking of joining BWGA and meeting a great group of fun, sporty ladies, please contact Denise Benger at dbenger1@comcast. net. We welcome all those with a Lakeside course handicap of 36 or less.

The Lazy Gardener’s Secret: High-Impact, Low-Maintenance Native Landscapes

When I moved to Danville some 25+ years ago I rapidly started planting ground cover to fill out my landscaping. Big mistake. The nonnative, invasive English ivy and periwinkle took over the garden stealing precious water and forcing out other plants. Over time I learned to incorporate plants and flowers that were native to the region, water conserving and beautiful.

Northern California is home to a diverse array of native plants perfectly adapted to its unique climate.

Common Native Plants of Northern California:

• Shrubs: Manzanita, Ceanothus, Coyote Brush, Coffeeberry

• Flowers: California Poppy, Blue Lupine, Douglas Iris, Western Columbine

• Grasses: California Fescue, Blue Wildrye, Purple Needlegrass

Landscaping with native plants not only offers beauty, but these plants also provide numerous benefits.

MASTER VOICE TEACHER

• Water Conservation: Once established, native plants require significantly less water than non-native species.

• Wildlife Habitat: They provide essential food and shelter for native birds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.

• Low Maintenance: Native plants are generally resistant to local pests and diseases, minimizing the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

• Erosion Control: Their deep root systems help stabilize soil and prevent erosion.

The best news is these plants and shrubs do their best when you just let them be!

In April the Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club will host speaker, Kathy Kramer who will talk about how to create beautiful, water conserving native gardens. If you would like to learn more about this event, or become a member of the Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club, please contact Kathy Harkins kdharkins@att.net

Newport National: A Player’s Course in Rhode Island

If you believe that the best public course in any state is a mandatory stop, then Newport National Golf Club needs to be on your list. While Rhode Island is small, this course makes a massive statement. It isn’t just the top public track in the state; many argue it’s the best public-access course in all New England.

High Ambitions, Unique Reality

The history of golf in Newport is legendary. It started in 1890 with sugar fortunes and names like Vanderbilt and Astor, eventually leading to the formation of the USGA. Newport National was originally intended to follow that private, ultra-exclusive path with two 36-hole championship courses and a grand clubhouse.

The economy had other plans. Instead of a gated enclave, we ended up with one fantastic 18-hole course open to the public.

The New Clubhouse Facility

The transition to a permanent structure was a major milestone for the club, which for years operated out of a modest double-wide trailer. The new building was created to pay homage to classic New England shingle-style architecture.

The 27-Hole Complex and Practice Areas

Along with the new clubhouse, the club has expanded its golf offerings and addressed one of its historical drawbacks: the lack of practice facilities.

Vineyard Course: The club now offers the Vineyard Course, an additional nine holes that complement the original Arthur Hillsdesigned Orchard Course.

Practice Facility: A new state-of-the-art practice area is now available, featuring a double-ended driving range with over 70,000 square feet of tee space and a one-acre short game area.

Architecture and Environment

Architects Arthur Hills and Drew Rogers didn’t set out to build a “standard” course. Built on the site of a former nursery and orchard, they took a minimalist approach that earned the club a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary designation.

The layout is a tribute to the links style. You’ll find:

Pure Surfaces: Meticulously maintained bentgrass from tee to green.

Teeing off on #1 into the thick of it.
Bridge over troubled brush.

The Elements: Wispy brown fescue that dances in a constant, stiff ocean breeze.

The Hazards: Deep bunkers and thick grass that demand smart recovery shots.

Course Highlights and Strategy

Located just a mile from the Atlantic, the wind is the defining feature here. If you aren’t a fan of playing two clubs extra into a gale, check the weather report before you book.

The Layout: The front nine features unusual back-toback par 3s (Holes 3 and 4). While it can slow down the pace of play, these holes test your ability to handle wind shifts.

Risk-Reward: Hole 5 is a short, 296-yard par 4. If the wind is at your back, you can cut the dogleg and drive the green in about 250 yards.

The Geometry: Keep an eye out for Hole 8—it features a rare, perfectly rectangular green with square corners.

The Challenge: Hole 10 is a wake-up call for the back nine. You must lay up before a massive barranca, then hit a 165-yard approach over the hazard to the green.

The Bottom Line

It’s a rugged, beautiful, and serious challenge. If you appreciate white gravel paths, natural rock walls, and a course where the conditioning is the star of the show, this is your spot. Just make sure your GPS is set—the signage is easy to miss.st it, and walk it in. It makes you want a replay, not a rematch.

Blackhawk Chorus Shares the Gift of Music With the Community

Ask any member of the Blackhawk Chorus how music has shaped their life, and you’ll hear familiar themes: treasured memories, meaningful friendships, the healing power of song, and the joy of shared expression.

On Tuesday evenings, about 100 singers gather for rehearsal. Of course there is plenty of singing — but also laughter, focus, and a sense of purpose that fills the room. Some faces beam with smiles; others show the concentration of singers perfecting a phrase. What unites them all is a shared goal: creating inspiring, entertaining performances for the community and the simple delight of “putting on a show.”

Each season takes shape during 16 weeks of rehearsals, culminating in two major musical celebrations: a festive holiday program each December and a spring concert series each May. These performances have become muchloved traditions in the East Bay, drawing enthusiastic audiences who come together to experience the power of choral music.

While the concerts are what audiences see, the chorus’s mission extends far beyond the stage. For more than a decade, the Blackhawk Chorus has actively supported music education in local schools. Through fundraising efforts and community generosity, the organization has donated more than $200,000 to school vocal music programs across the region.

These Blackhawk Chorus Music Education Fund Grants help teachers purchase sheet music, classroom equipment, and performance attire, as well as replace aging sound systems and support other essential needs. This spring alone, the chorus awarded $12,000 in grants to 15 schools: eight elementary, three middle, and four high schools. All to help ensure that the next generation of singers has the opportunity to discover the joy of music.

Looking Ahead: Spring Concerts

This season’s spring program reflects the spirit of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Titled Our American Musical Journey, the concert explores how music has reflected the nation’s history, values, struggles, and dreams.

The program traces a vibrant musical path — from folk traditions to beloved popular songs, from jazz and rock and roll to contemporary musical theater — creating a sweeping choral portrait of the American story.

Performances will take place May 2 at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church and May 3 at California High School Performing Arts Center.

Tickets and additional information are available at BlackhawkChorus.com/events.

Beyond the Postcard

The Joy of a Safari

Many dream of dawns on the Serengeti and seeing the “Big Five”. While making the dream come true takes some effort, it is worth it.

Giraffes silhouetted against the vast blue sky; a bull elephant chasing your jeep; a lioness perched in a dead tree where she could jump into your jeep because she is so chose; two lions mating in the red glow of your driver’s flashlight; waiting for 3 cheetahs to move off the road because they have the right of way; seeing the eyes of a hippo peak at you from just above the surface of a lake. Even an ugly warthog takes on a new grandeur on the vast plains of its native habitat.

The animals seem inured to vehicles, longlenses and giddy voyeurs. (Spoiler alert: teenagers sometimes sulk and ask why there is no Wi-Fi, as giraffes amble by).

If you look around, you see the soft light through Acacia and Commiphora trees as dusk descends. At night in your (possibly luxurious) tent you listen to sounds different from Blackhawk coyotes, cattle and owls. When they stop, the silence is deafening. And the stars, OMG, the stars. You might have the chance to experience candlelight dinners in makeshift

settings on the savannah or the employees dancing and singing for you. We found the food good and appreciated the chance to sample South African wines. Try the Pinotage and Cabs – and don’t forget Amarula liqueur after dinner.

You will also find the trip more pleasurable if you bring inflatable donuts to sit on when in the range vehicles. It gets bumpy.

We were in a small game preserve in South Africa. The experience would surely be even better on a safari in Botswana or Kenya’s Masai Mara where you can watch the Great Migration. If you are close, you might want to add Victoria Falls to your itinerary. There the adventurous can paraglide across the face of the falls.

If we want experiences that are not Danville we must leave and be open to sounds, sights and smells we don’t find on a Tuesday morning on the way to work. Or with friends eating at Bridges. Trading smiles with people we will never see again won’t be forgotten; eh, maybe by them, but not by you.

There is no perfect vacation if you are not going to a familiar place and parking yourself. But with a modicum of adventure, Africa is wonderful and a worthy candidate for “trip of a lifetime”.

R2021 Silver Oak Napa Valley Release Day

ecently, we had the pleasure of attending Silver Oak’s 2021 Napa Valley Release Day, a highly anticipated celebration marking the debut of its newest Napa Valley vintage. This beloved tradition takes place on the first Saturday in February for the Napa Valley release and the first Saturday in August for the Alexander Valley vintage.

Silver Oak began this tradition in the 1980s, and it has since become a soldout signature event for loyal patrons. The day features an unforgettable lineup of renowned local chefs, live music, photo booths, and, of course, the opportunity to enjoy the newest Silver Oak vintage in the stunning setting of their iconic winery.

The 2021 Silver Oak Napa Valley is composed of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Aged for 24 months in 50% new American oak barrels, this full-bodied yet elegant wine delivered layers of

depth and balance—bringing, as many attendees described, “smiles of joy” throughout the event.

This year’s culinary program was equally impressive, featuring three exceptional chefs whose résumés are far too extensive to fully capture here. Silver Oak Executive Chef Preeti Mistry, Chef Kim Alter of Nightbird in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley, and Chef Dominica Rice-Cisneros of Bombera in Oakland showcased their talents by creating inspired dishes that paired flawlessly with this world-class wine.

In every sense, it was a day of great wine, extraordinary food, and shared celebration. We already look forward to attending future release events—because, as Silver Oak so perfectly puts it, “Life is a Cabernet.”

The Local Trust Loop

Local Businesses

How Print & Digital Strategies Work Together to Build Credibility

Buying decisions rarely happen after just one message. Instead, customers move through a trust loop, encountering a business across print, digital, and online reputation channels before feeling confident enough to choose. For local businesses, mastering the trust loop is the key to standing out in a crowded marketplace.

Inaccurate or outdated online information can severely impact

Trust Report showed that 62% of consumers would avoid using a business if they found incorrect information online.1

44% Visit Websites After Print

Outdated information leads to many challenges for local businesses

▶ PRINT CREATES INITIAL AWARENESS

Customers may show up when you’re closed, leading to frustration, loss of trust, and potentially a negative review.

Community print advertising remains one of the most credible ways to introduce your brand to local audiences. Visibility plants the first seed of recognition, increasing the likelihood that a future online search – or digital ad – will lead back to your business. Passive Secrets reports that 44% of customers visit a brand’s website after receiving direct mail or print marketing, showing how print branding boosts online actions.

▶ REVIEWS & LISTINGS VALIDATE THE DECISION

Mismatched info across platforms can confuse search algorithms, reducing your search ranking and overall visibility.

Managing dozens of individual listings is a headache and takes time away from running your business.

Accurate business listings can give companies a competitive edge

Once awareness is established, buyers look for proof. BrightLocal reports that 98% of consumers3 read online reviews for local businesses, and 87% won’t consider a business4 with an inaccurate listing. Strong reviews and accurate listings close the trust loop, turning curiosity into confidence.

Consistent information builds credibility and trust with new and existing customers, giving them peace of mind to choose your business over others.

Accurate listings lead to increased engagement and improved search rankings, boosting your local visibility.

Easier updates from a single dashboard allow businesses to conveniently manage their online information with just a few clicks, saving valuable time for owners.

Inconsistent or missing details lead to fewer customer interactions and missed revenue opportunities.

An online listings service ensures that your business data, such as your name, address, phone number, hours, and website, is accurate across search engines, maps and directories

When your info is up-to-date, more people will reach out, and stop by, which can directly boost your bottom line.

When print awareness, digital reinforcement, and online reputation work together, they create a powerful cycle of credibility. Local businesses that remain visible across all three touchpoints earn more trust and position themselves to win more customers.

Online listings services help local businesses stay competitive, visible, and credible. Don’t let wrong information limit your growth

Push Present Gift Ideas from New Parents & Grandparents

My wife Judy and I recently welcomed our eighth grandchild, Eleni, into the world. As you might imagine, babies — and the joy they bring — have certainly been on our minds. When our youngest son, Stevie, asked us for push-present ideas to give to his wife, Kelli, we had plenty of suggestions to share.

So what exactly is a push present?

Simply put, a push present is a gift given to celebrate the birth of a baby. It is a gift specifically for the new mom — a way to honor her strength, love, and the incredible journey she has just experienced. Welcoming a child into the world is both one of life’s most challenging and most rewarding moments, and a push gift brings the focus back to the mother who made it possible.

Jewelry is a particularly meaningful way to mark this moment. It becomes a tangible reminder of those first precious hours with her new baby — and of the love and appreciation behind the gift — something she can wear and cherish every day.

Push presents can come from a partner, spouse, or even proud grandparents who want to celebrate the newest addition to the family. No matter who gives the gift, the intention is the same: to make the new mom feel loved, appreciated, and celebrated.

Birthstone and Personalized Jewelry

Personalized jewelry offers a tailored touch to the push gift concept. It commemorates the birth month of the newest member of the family. Each time the new mom looks at the birthstone jewelry, she remembers the time when she became a mom. Birthstone options come in all categories of jewelry, including earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Personalized jewelry also starts a tradition for future babies. Add to her collection of push present jewelry to represent all of her children. Like a birthstone, an initial or name plate adds a personalized touch that represents the new family member. If you already know the baby’s name, you can easily purchase a piece of jewelry with the first name or initial before the birth. If you want to symbolize the changing composition of your family, incorporate the initials of the parents.

Sparkling Diamond Earrings

Earrings work well as a push present because they are something the new mom can wear every day and regardless of ring or show size – diamond earrings always fit and make the wearer feel special. Diamond solitaire earrings (both natural and lab grown) offer a classic, versatile option, but push present earrings can be any style or shape. The earrings don’t need a special connection to the birth itself. Simply receiving the earrings on the day her child is born is enough to make them special. Each time she slips them into her ears, she’ll fondly remember your love and the birth of her child.

An Additional Band to Complement Her Wedding Ring

The wedding ring she wears every day represents your love and takes her back to your wedding day. It is a very important symbol to show your strength and commitment to one another. The birth of a child is just as monumental as getting married. With a new baby in the picture, that love you share continues to grow. Choose a band that fits beside her wedding ring, paying close attention to the style of the original band to ensure they look good together. We at Padis can provide suggestions for bands that will work well. Each time she gazes at her hand, she’ll not only remember her love for you but also the growing love your family has, thanks to the birth of your new baby.

A New Timepiece

Cell phones may be the go-to way to tell time, but an elegant designer watch is still a relevant and useful accessory in a new mom’s life. Not only will a new watch keep her on time for those pediatrician appointments and play dates; it also decorates her wrist with a sophisticated style. Choose a watch that fits her style and the way she might use it. Luminescent hands and easy-to-read numbers make the watch visible even in a dark nursery or under sleep-deprived conditions.

Celebrating Life’s Most Precious Moments

No matter your role in the expectant mother’s life, a thoughtful push present is a beautiful way to celebrate the birth of a baby. Jewelry creates a lasting keepsake — something she will treasure for years and eventually associate with one of the most meaningful days of her life.

At Padis Jewelry, we are honored to be part of these family milestones. For generations, families have trusted us to help mark their most important moments.
