Meet The Gupta Family:
A Story of Passion, Creativity, and Community in Blackhawk
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
Photographs provided by the Gupta family
The Gupta family—Arvind, Richa, Siya, and Shivay—has embraced life with a beautiful blend of professional success, artistic passion, and deep cultural connections. Their journey from Kanpur, India, to the U.S., and ultimately to Blackhawk, is a story of love, ambition, and the pursuit of dreams.
A Love Story Rooted in Tradition
Arvind and Richa’s love story is one of tradition and romance. Their marriage was arranged in the classic Indian way, with family introductions leading to their first meeting. As their wedding day approached, Arvind expressed his excitement in the most heartwarming way—sending a countdown of rose bouquets, starting with ten roses and ending with one on their wedding day. It was a surreal experience for Richa, one she cherishes to this day.
Married in December 2007, the couple moved to the U.S. together in January 2008. Arvind, who had completed his Master’s from Purdue University, was already working as a hardware engineer, while Richa was finishing her Master’s in Biochemistry in India. She later pursued further studies at USF and now thrives as a Strategic Account Executive at Ansa Biotechnologies, while Arvind leads as the Head of Customer Engineering at MinIo.
Finding Home in Blackhawk
The Gupta family has moved across the Bay Area, from San Jose to Santa Clara to Fremont, before finally settling in Blackhawk during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was love at first sight— the scenic beauty, open spaces, and the country feel immediately stole their hearts. Within just 10 days of visiting, they secured their dream home, and they haven’t looked back since.
Creativity and Passion Beyond Work
Beyond their professional achievements, the Guptas are a family of artists and dreamers.
Arvind, an artist at heart, enjoys painting, sculpting, and creating. His latest passion project? Building a treehouse in their backyard for the kids,—a space where imagination can run wild.
Richa, on the other hand, has turned her childhood love for fashion and dance into a reality. She has been actively involved in teaching dance for Diwali celebrations in Blackhawk and is currently performing with Vaishnavi Dance Academy in Pleasanton. She has also taken the runway world by storm, winning Mrs. California Universe Petite
2025 and placing as 1st runner-up at the national level for Mrs. Universe USA Petite 2025. With runway shows lined up for New York Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week, along with an upcoming feature in TWIF (The What of Insta Fashion) Magazine, she’s making her mark in the industry while balancing life as a mom and business executive.
Eleven-year-old Siya, much like her mother, has a keen eye for fashion. She is already taking
hopes to empower women and young girls to pursue their dreams, no matter the hurdles. She believes in the power of selflove and confidence, encouraging others to find strength within before seeking validation from the world.
Spirituality and Staying Connected to Their Roots
At their core, the Guptas remain deeply connected to their culture and traditions. They strive to pass on spiritual values and cultural heritage to their children, ensuring that the essence of their Indian roots lives on for generations to come.
A Bright Future in Blackhawk

Say Goodbye to Heel Pain: How Shockwave Therapy Can Help
By Dr. Max Lippman, Owner of Plaza Chiropractic & Massage Therapy - Blackhawk Plaza
If you’ve ever woken up with a sharp pain in your heel, you might be dealing with plantar fasciitis. This common foot problem happens when the thick band of tissue under your foot (the plantar fascia) gets inflamed from too much stress. It’s frustrating, painful, and can make walking feel like a chore. While stretching, ice, and supportive shoes can help, some people struggle to find lasting relief. That’s where shockwave therapy comes in—a cutting-edge treatment that could get you back on your feet, pain-free!
Shockwave therapy is a simple, non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves to stimulate healing in the injured area. These waves increase blood flow, break up tight scar tissue, and reduce inflammation, helping your foot heal faster. Best of all, it doesn’t require surgery or medication! Most sessions take just 15–30 minutes, and many patients start feeling better after just a few treatments.
Studies have shown that shockwave therapy is highly effective for plantar fasciitis. Research published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that up to 80% of patients experienced significant pain reduction after treatment. Another study in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research showed that shockwave therapy helped improve mobility and function in people suffering from chronic plantar fasciitis.
While you may feel a little discomfort during the procedure, the results speak for themselves—many people experience significant pain relief and even complete recovery. If you’ve been struggling with stubborn heel pain and nothing else has worked, this could be the solution you’ve been looking for!
Why wait to feel better? Book a consultation today and see how shockwave therapy can help you get back to doing what you love—pain-free!
Tesla Unveils Its Newest Fleet At Blackhawk Event
By Celeste Altus, Photos by Celeste Altus
This past month, Tesla enthusiasts and automotive aficionados gathered at an open dealership event to examine the company’s latest fleet of vehicles. Hosted at the gorgeous Blackhawk Plaza courtyard of the Blackhawk Museum, the event offered attendees a first look at groundbreaking innovations and an opportunity to experience the future of sustainable driving.
Parked around the courtyard were Tesla’s newest models, including updates to the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. Tesla representatives were on hand to walk attendees through the advanced features and
design improvements, answering questions about performance, range, and cuttingedge technology.
One of the most exciting aspects of the day was the opportunity for guests to take test drives of the Cybertruck. With expert Tesla instructors guiding them, attendees were able to experience the instant acceleration (0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds) and smooth handling.
A sample of the 2009 Tesla Roadster was also on hand for those who appreciate the evolution of these EVs.

Niner’s News
By Fran Davis
Mary Portous, 2024 Niner’s Charm Day Champion
Although we have lived on Hole 11 of the Falls (originally known as Hole 2) for 36 years, we never really golfed until we sold our dental practice to our son Garrett in 2015. Since we were rarely needed at our office any longer, we decided to pick up golf as a sport to fill our time, and to help us prepare for our “Golden Years”.
I did not know the first thing about golf, so I enrolled in a group clinic Blackhawk offered. There I met Etienne Melcher, and we became fast friends. We were both going through the same transitions in our lives and shared so many similarities, that we could pass for sisters. I am sure we learned something about golf—as the other registrant dropped off the moment he witnessed our lack of golf talent—but I only remember Etienne’s life changing advice. She recommended I follow protocol and register my husband Lee in “Senior Day Care” (fondly known by male golfers as SGA). She also recommended I join the lady Niners, despite my inability to golf. All I needed was a GHIN number and 10 rounds of golf to establish a handicap. After
that, I was free to golf every week with no judgment, as long as I followed the endless set of Golf rules. In addition to our Golf Pros Brian & Andy, luckily we have Joanne Knapp & Debbie Roof should we develop “Rule Confusion”!
The only reason I was able to win Charm Championship Playoff, is because of the lucky turn of fate that I was in town and available to take Andy Brown’s clinic before one of our Charm Day Competitions. Then, I happened to be in town and available to take all 3 of Andy’s clinics right before the Charm Playoffs. An even luckier turn of fate was that the skills I learned in Andy’s clinics stayed with me long enough to make it through the Championship Playoff!
I am not really sure that I like the sport of golf, but I love our BH golf Pros, I love our beautiful BH golf courses, I love being outside and free from stress and work, but mostly, I love the friendships, compassion and support of the Niners. It is true that we Niners have half the holes, yet twice the fun! Cheers to the lady Niners!

My husband Bill and I moved to the Bay Area in ’93. He’s from Seattle, and I am originally from New Orleans. We joined Crow Canyon CC because we lived so close and at the time, we were both working. I finally retired from nursing and got back into golf, which is where I joined their nine hole group thanks to the encouragement of our good friends, the Giovanzanas. In September of 2020 we decided to join Blackhawk which, was during the height of the pandemic. This was the best thing we have ever done!
We have met so many wonderful people and made such great friends especially after joining the Niners. They are a fantastic group of women that enjoy playing golf but more than anything love having fun playing together!

Elyse Liberatore: Finding Strength in the Challenge
By Stacie Mihalik
For Elyse Liberatore, swimming isn’t just about racing—it’s about pushing herself beyond what she thought was possible. A member of the Blackhawk Swim Team (HOX) since she was 10, Elyse has embraced the sport with determination, proving that hard work and a strong mindset can turn challenges into triumphs.
Unlike many swimmers who start young, Elyse dove into competitive swimming later than most, with no prior experience before joining HOX. “At first, I was nervous about competing,” she recalls. “But as I got more comfortable, I started to love the challenge of racing and watching my times drop week after week.”
That shift in mindset helped Elyse transform her fear into excitement, a lesson reinforced by her coaches. One coach told her during her first meet, “You’re not actually nervous, you’re excited.” That perspective stuck with her, and she now applies it not just in swimming but in life—choosing to embrace challenges with a positive mindset.
Elyse’s favorite stroke, butterfly, embodies this philosophy. “Even though it’s hard, pushing myself to master the toughest stroke makes other challenges, both in and out of the pool, feel easier,” she says. Her hard work was recognized last season at the HOX Awards Banquet when she was named “Most Dedicated Swimmer” in the 11-12 age group, an honor she holds close to her heart.
“For me, it’s about being the best version of myself, supporting my teammates, and cheering as loud as possible for every swimmer—young or old.”
Her most memorable race? The Battle of the Ages Meet 50-yard Backstroke. The nerves hit hard, but once she was on the block, everything faded except for the rush of the race. “I can still feel every moment— pushing off, the flip turn, my lungs burning, and finally slamming my hand into the wall,” she remembers. When she looked up and saw she had won her heat, the thrill was unforgettable.
Beyond swimming, Elyse is a junior coach, helping younger swimmers on the team gain confidence, just as her coaches helped her. She also stays active in National Charity League and serves as a stage manager for her school plays. But no matter what she’s involved in, the lessons from swim stick with her. “Consistency and hard work pay off, in and out of the pool,” she says.
For Elyse, the HOX team is more than a swim team—it’s a hardworking, supportive community where teammates lift each other up. “Even if you start late like I did, you can still be great at something if you put in the effort,” she says. As she heads into her third season, there’s no doubt she’ll continue to push herself, inspire her teammates, and remind everyone that sometimes, the hardest challenges bring the greatest rewards.
Interested in Junior Coaching?
Junior coaching slots are still available! If you’re a swimmer aged 12-18 and looking for a way to gain leadership experience while giving back to the team, consider becoming a HOX Junior Coach. Junior Coaches help connect with younger swimmers and ensure they have fun at each practice while improving their skills. To learn more about Junior Coaching or our swim programs visit www.hoxswim.com or reach out to Coach Sean directly at seanq@blackhawkcc.org.
Newly Renovated The Growler Serves Up Tasty Dishes and Family Fun in Danville
By Joshua Yosifon, Junior Reporter
Is your stomach growling? Try The Growler in Danville! Not only is this an awesome restaurant for adults and perhaps best known for its extensive beer on tap, this place is also great for a kid-friendly dinner. They recently finished a very nice remodel in July 2024. They added a lot of new renovations, such as new modern floors and pleasant mood lighting.
So about the food…The sausages were exquisite! I could smell them before they even reached the table. They had a nice crispy outside and were packed with flavor on the inside, making my mouth water in between bites. Additionally, the pretzel bites were incredible. They were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, and the salt and queso dip really did their job by complimenting the nice texture of the pretzel.
If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, the cobb salad is the way to go. All the ingredients were very fresh, and the ranch dressing went well with the toppings such as tangy tomato, egg, avocado, and crispy bacon. A great appetizer for the
table is the buffalo wings, which comes with carrot and celery sticks. These flavored packed wings are perfect if you’re looking for something a little spicy.
Finally, what every kid looks forward to in a great meal: dessert! The brownie over vanilla ice cream is decadent. The brownie is warm and gooey on the inside, and the creamy vanilla ice cream perfectly assists the brownie.
The Growler has perfected the art of fun and relaxation. Every Tuesday from 4-9pm and every Wednesday through Friday from 3-6pm, enjoy their happy hour with discounted appetizers and drinks. Additionally on Wednesdays from 3pm to close, you’re invited to bring your favorite board game and enjoy extended happy hour for a fun-filled evening with family and friends. Kid tip: there is a game cubby filled with board games that everyone will surely enjoy!
Joshua Yosifon is a sixth grader from Danville, CA. He loves to eat, sample new foods, and write food reviews from a kid’s perspective. He is passionate about playing soccer and futsal, reading action books, and collecting soccer cards.

The Closing of Joann Fabric Stores and Layer Cake Puff Quilts
By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
AsJoann Fabric Stores close their doors, many crafters and quilters are wondering where they can find sewing supplies and continue their creative projects. Luckily, there are some alternatives to keep your sewing and quilting journey going strong.
Where Can You Find Sewing Supplies Now?
While Joann’s may have been a go-to for many, there are still great local options for sewing enthusiasts in the area. If you’re in the Dublin area, check out Dublin Sewing Center located at 7367 Village Parkway in Dublin. Not only do they offer a wide variety of thread and notions, but they also provide sewing classes, making it a perfect spot for both beginners and seasoned crafters. Additionally, if you’re in need of a new sewing machine or repairs for your existing one, the Dublin Sewing Center has you covered.
For those in the Livermore area, In Between Stitches is a mustvisit. Located at 167 North Livermore Avenue, this shop offers a beautiful selection of fabrics (primarily geared toward quilting and knitting projects), essential notions, and a variety of classes. Whether you’re starting a new project or searching for inspiration, In Between Stitches is a fantastic resource.
What is a Layer Cake Puff Quilt?
Layer Cake Puff Quilts are currently trending on TikTok. If you’re looking for a new quilting project, consider making a Layer Cake Puff Quilt! This type of quilt is a super quick and satisfying project to build, especially if you’re using layer cake fabrics. Layer cakes are pre-cut stacks of 10-inch squares that make quilt assembly a breeze.
A layer cake puff quilt adds a unique twist by using a puff effect in place of traditional batting. The puff effect creates a soft, cushiony texture that gives the quilt a lovely, plush feel. The process of making a puff quilt is simple, and it can be completed in a weekend.
You can see a sample of a puff quilt in action via a TikTok video by Nova Cara: Layer Cake Puff Quilt Video: https://www.tiktok. com/@nova.cara/video/7456168684646599979
For step-by-step instructions, check out this helpful YouTube video on The Sewing Channel: Layer Cake Puff Quilt Tutorial: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sSNS9mdE7Q
Here’s a sneak peek at my quilt in progress!
Conclusion
Though Joann Fabric Stores are closing, there are still plenty of wonderful places to find sewing supplies and fabrics. Whether you’re looking for fabric, thread, or even sewing classes, Dublin Sewing Center and In Between Stitches are both great local options. And for your next quilting project, consider trying out the layer cake puff quilt for a quick and fun challenge!

Reduce Risk with Rules: My Top 10 Tenets
By John J. Gardner, CFP®, CPM® Blackhawk Wealth Advisors
AsI write this in early March, the stock market is nearing correction mode (a 10% decline from a recent high) and some predict a bear market (a 20% fall from the previous high). I thought it was timely to share my Top 10 Tenets. These investment principles support a sound investment philosophy. They have guided me through 40 years of major market moves and have been invaluable to me. I hope they are of value to you, too.
Investing Tenet #1...Be Disciplined
Investing is not for the undisciplined. As a stock investor, a disciplined approach to research and using buy and sell rules are critical to the investment process and success.
Investing Tenet #2...Know Yourself
This is the ‘Be true to you’ rule. Knowing your unique investment parameters and constraints will help you stay true to you. It is required due diligence.
Investing Tenet #3...Control Your Emotions
This tenet could be #1. Successful investing requires a high “EQ” (“Emotional Intelligence”). Greed, fear and hope have no place in investing. It has been said, “Emotions are your worst
enemy in the stock market.” Build a rational plan based on your goals and stick with it.
Investing Tenet #4...Time-In, Not Time-ing
A key to successful investing is time; it is the amount of time in, not the timing, that matters. Time in the stock market does two things: It reduces risk and avoids the cost of being out. The longer the time in the market, the lower the risk.
Investing Tenet #5... Process before Product
Investing is a process. In fact, it is a never-ending process. Every investor should have a strong understanding of the investment planning process before buying any investment product. I maintain a 6-step process beginning with a clear statement of investment goals and objectives. The last step is “On-going Monitoring”.
Investing Tenet #6...Go With What You Know
As Warren Buffet puts it, “If you don’t understand it, don’t buy it”. Being aware of what you trust, buy, use, and like can lead to a common-sense approach to investing.
Minimizing losses is a critical, non-negotiable investing rule. Avoiding large losses and holding on to winners for possible extreme gains is the path to wealth accumulation and preservation in the stock market.
Investing Tenet #8…Concentrate for Accumulation & Diversify for Preservation
Too much diversification can dilute profit potential. Too much concentration can be harmful, also. Knowing your investor-self will help you with concentration vs. diversification. The best of the two is determined by which is best for you.
Investing Tenet #9...Be Contrary, not Ordinary
Sir John Templeton said, “To buy when others are despondently selling and to sell when others are euphorically buying takes the greatest courage but provides the greatest profit.” Contrarian investing may feel counter-intuitive, but it is a proven investment approach.
Investing Tenet #10...Put Risk Before Return
Last on the list, but not in importance. #10 is the heart of my investment philosophy: “Investing is a process that should be based on a disciplined approach to risk management.” Strive to minimize the risk inherent in all investments before chasing returns.
RAckerman Family Vineyards
By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
ecently, we had the pleasure of visiting Ackerman Family Vineyards. The vineyard was purchased 30 years ago in Coombsville in 1994. Coombsville became the 16th AVA within the Napa Valley in 2011.
Winemaker Leo Tellez is a third generation Napan. With Ackerman Family Vineyards, he has found the perfect fit as part of a small family operated estate based wine company creating world class wines.
The knowledgeable team at Ackerman includes Lauren Ackerman, President, Kristie Fondario General Manager, and Joe Hinde Director of Sales and Hospitality.
A variety of experiences are available that include wine tasting, corporate events, weddings, afternoon teas, cooking classes, and private dining.
In 2010 Lauren purchased the 1888 Napa Victorian known as the Clifford house located 2 blocks from Main Street in downtown Napa.
She restored this historic mansion to its 19th century splendor. In 2015, it opened as the Ackerman Heritage House. Since then, many people have enjoyed unique experiences at this iconic Napa treasure.
Today our informative host Joe Hinde began our tasting with a glass of 2022 Sauvignon Blanc as we toured this elegantly decorated Victorian.
We then moved to their tasting room and were treated to 3 of their red wines. 2021 Alavigna Tosca, 2018 Memoir and 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon. We especially enjoyed the Memoir, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10%Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec and 5% Petite Verdot. We took a couple bottles back to Danville to share with our friends. This is a ‘must do’ experience to add to your Napa bucket list.
In addition, there are many great restaurants within walking distance. We enjoyed a great lunch overlooking the Napa River at The Waterfront Seafood Grille.

St. Isidore School Celebrates Science, Innovation, and Community
By Stacie Mihalik
At St. Isidore School in Danville, curiosity and creativity take center stage when it comes to science education. This year, middle school students in grades 7-8 had the exciting opportunity to put their scientific knowledge to the test by competing in the annual St. Isidore Science Fair. After weeks of research, experimentation, and analysis, students proudly presented their projects to a panel of judges. Their hard work and innovative thinking were on full display as they tackled real-world scientific questions and challenges. Congratulations to our winners!
The celebration of science didn’t stop there! Following the Science Fair, the entire school community came together for an unforgettable STEAM Night, which embraced an exciting space theme. The gym was transformed into a cosmic wonderland, with space-themed artwork created by students in grades TK-5 decorating the walls, setting the stage for an evening of hands-on discovery.
Students of all ages explored a variety of interactive science activities, each designed to inspire and engage young minds. Some of the most popular stations included:
Balloon Rockets – Experimenting with propulsion and aerodynamics.
Parachute Design – Testing gravity and engineering skills.
Moon Rover Scene – Imagining and designing lunar landscapes.
Solar System Scrolls – Learning about planetary order and characteristics.
Constellation Chalk – Creating star patterns and learning about their significance.
Space Chains – Crafting models of celestial connections.
STEAM Night was a wonderful opportunity for students to dive deeper into scientific exploration while fostering a love of learning in a fun, collaborative environment. Events like these highlight St. Isidore School’s commitment to providing enriching educational experiences that ignite curiosity and inspire future innovators.
The spirit of creativity and celebration continued beyond the classroom at the St. Isidore School 2025 Gala, one of the school’s biggest annual fundraisers. Held at the stunning Blackhawk Automotive Museum, this year’s gala transported guests back in time with an Old Hollywood theme. Parents, faculty, and supporters of the school gathered for an elegant evening that featured a dinner, auction, and dancing—all in support of St. Isidore’s mission to provide exceptional educational opportunities. The event not only raised funds for vital school programs but also strengthened the sense of community and shared purpose that makes St. Isidore so special.
From the Science Fair and STEAM Night to the Gala, a common theme emerges—exploration, creativity, and connection. Whether students are testing their scientific theories, families are coming together for hands-on learning, or the community is celebrating and supporting the school’s future, St. Isidore continues to foster a culture of curiosity, discovery, and togetherness.

The Beauty of the Spring Moon in Blackhawk
By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba
Before the sun sets in Blackhawk, Danville, the sky is painted with warm hues and soft blue tones, creating a stunning backdrop for the rising spring moon. The rolling hills, covered in vibrant yellow mustard flowers, add a burst of color as the fading daylight mingles with the early moonlight. A line of cherry blossom trees, their delicate pink flowers in full bloom, frames the view, enhancing the peaceful and magical atmosphere of the moment. This perfect blend of nature creates a serene scene that invites anyone nearby to pause and take in the beauty around them.
In the moments before sunset, the moon’s light gently reflects off the ponds and tree-lined streets of Blackhawk, while the yellow mustard flowers and cherry blossoms add splashes of color to the landscape. The distant silhouette of Mount Diablo, the lush golf courses and the blossoming trees contribute to the tranquil charm of the evening. As the spring moon rises higher, the landscape transforms into a glowing masterpiece, bringing a sense of calm and renewal to this picturesque town. The cool evening breeze carries the scent of blooming flowers, making it the perfect time for a quiet walk or a moment of reflection under the night sky.
As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!
