Dear Neighbors,

This September marks our 103rd issue of Blackhawk Living Magazine! We have learned a lot about our community over the past 103 months and have had a blast doing it! We have many more wonderful families to feature and stories to share. On behalf of our publisher, Jo Peek, our photographer, Kim Lind, myself and all of our talented contributors, we want to thank you for letting us share the stories of our community.

We want to thank all of our sponsors for making Blackhawk Living Magazine possible. Every September, my neighborhood throws an annual Block Party. It’s where we get to know any new neighbors and catch up with everyone else. This block party tradition has been going on for over 30 years on my street. These kinds of community bonding activities are just another reason I cherish Blackhawk.

This month also marks the conclusion of summer and back to a regular routine for many of us. Wishing all our Blackhawk students a great back to school experience and a happy Labor Day!

We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share, please email me at mscott@ bestversionmedia.com

Warmly,

Megan Scott

Chi Family: Meet the Howard, Alice, Dora and Annabelle

Asocial event in San Francisco is where Howard and Alice first met. Alice had just finished her Master’s degree in Business Administration. Howard knew he had to see her again and asked for her phone number. Alice resisted, but Howard was able to score an email address, which he quickly used to ask her out. They clicked and began dating, which led to a proposal and a wedding. “Our wedding took place at the Ferry Building in San Francisco a few years later. It was one of our favorite places to visit while getting to know each other,” says Howard.

Howard was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Alice is originally from Taiwan. The couple decided to start a family in the years following their marriage. They lived on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, overlooking the water and the Bay Bridge. “Although it was beautiful, we wanted more space and a yard to play in with our future children. But most importantly, we wanted a community we could call home. Blackhawk has always been an area that we aspired to be in one day. We lived in San Ramon and Lafayette for

a few years, then found a home in the gates, and it was love at first sight. The rest is history,” says Alice.

Alice received her MBA from Fresno State, while Howard received his undergraduate degree from UC Riverside and his MBA from Golden Gate University. Alice worked for Sutter Health and now for Kaiser Permanente in healthcare finance.

Howard founded a financial services startup, which was later acquired by a well-known corporation. He is now in the philanthropic space and is acting Chief Financial and Operating Officer at the San Francisco SPCA. He also serves on several boards, including the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors. Howard is a published author who writes about nonprofit best practices for Forbes.com.

Fitness and health are big priorities for the Chi family. Alice enjoys working out at the Blackhawk Country Club Fitness Center almost every day. She enjoys all the classes, however her favorite is TRX. When she is not at the gym, you can find her doing arts and crafts with the kids or making a photo album of their last vacation. Howard also enjoys going to the gym and has recently started playing tennis. He began taking lessons at the club last September and made some great friends who persuaded him to join a team against his better judgment.

Volunteering and nonprofit work are important to the Chi’s. They believe this is an essential part of living and a privilege to give back. The Chi family will actively volunteer together at organizations like Alameda County and Contra Costa County food banks and hospitals such as Kaiser, Stanford, and Sutter Health. Howard is particularly passionate about healthcare for all living things and the importance of access to equitable care. “San Francisco General Hospital and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are both organizations where, regardless of income, you will receive highquality health care. It doesn’t matter if you are famous or someone down on their luck; you will get the same highquality health care for your loved ones. Everyone and every animal deserves access to quality health care,” says Howard.

Two daughters, Dora and Annabelle, and an adorable dog named Bear complete the family. Dora enjoys extracurricular activities that include leadership, violin, chess, Math Olympiad, Science Alliance, and Garden Club. She has a full schedule of mixed martial arts, piano, tennis, and Chinese classes. Dora is particularly passionate about dance, and you can often catch her singing and dancing or making up a new choreographed performance to her favorite songs. She also uses her creativity to make unique items, such as cheeseburger earrings made from clay. Dora recently participated in the Little Entrepreneurship Fair, in which she created a business offering these handmade fashion jewelry pieces.

Annabelle is involved in similar activities, but really enjoys drawing and gymnastics. She is a huge animal lover, especially dogs. Her collection of stuffed animals

8 SEPTEMBER 2023 Resident Feature

rivals most toy stores. Annabelle is very determined and will do her best when she sets a goal. She recently took home first place in sparring during the last mixed martial arts tournament. “When the girls are not fighting each other, they also enjoy swimming and biking outdoors. This year was their first time on skis, and they did great. In a half hour, they were skiing down the bunny slope on their own,” says Alice.

Bear is an 8-year-old Malamute-Husky mix adopted from the SPCA. She was abandoned at Animal Care and Control and eventually wound up at the SPCA, where she was put up for adoption and unfortunately returned. “We met Bear and found her a forever home. Although she is grumpy, she sheds everywhere and is on every medication known to man, she gets spoiled with special meals every night, and we love her. She is our giant fur pillow,” says Howard.

A major reason the Chi family made the move to Blackhawk was to build a community. “We joined the Country Club and have met amazing people, parents, and neighbors, many with similar interests and values. We enjoy it very much and have found our community.”

Howard is a member of the Blackhawk car enthusiast group, where he enjoys talking with other gear heads about automobiles. He enjoys cruising and car shows with the top down on his Grigio Titanio (grey) Ferrari. Alice and Howard often attend Ferrari of San Francisco car rallies and events that start at the dealership and then drive with a small group of owners to Napa and Sonoma wineries for unique experiences.

“Travel is a big part of our family. We travel to many places and enjoy it very much. As a family, we have recently been to Italy, Greece, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Hawaii, Japan, Vietnam and Mexico. We have been traveling with the kids since before they could walk. The kids are expert travelers and pack their own bags and entertain themselves on flights that sometimes last over 12 hours. We all look forward to our vacations together,” says Alice.

Howard and Alice say they are grateful to call Blackhawk home, “We just want to say how amazing it is to be a part of this fabulous community. We hope to meet everyone. We love Blackhawk!”

Our team is excited to guide you in choosing a pet, share information about their history and behavior, and provide helpful resources.

Here are a couple of our adorable animals looking for love:

Two-year-old Monte is an outgoing dude who loves to romp around and play with his people and dog friends alike. He was adopted from ARF as a puppy, but unfortunately his new guardian passed away less than two years later. He loves learning new commands/tricks, playing with other dogs, and snuggling up for some cuddles. He’s even lived happily with cats! Despite all he’s been through, Monte has kept an upbeat attitude and loves flashing his trademark smile. Bonus: Monte’s adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor.

ARF adoption fees:

• $150 for an adult dog

• $375 for a puppy (<6 months)

When five-year-old Mando first joined us at ARF, he was shy and reserved, hiding his true personality. But it didn’t take long for his fun, loving side to show and for him to realize how badly he wanted to join a family. Does that sound like any Mandalorians you may have heard of? This a handsome lad will woo you with his big, fluffy cheeks and affectionate personality. He’ll do just about anything for a scratch on the top of his head or a tasty treat. Meet Mando today!

Hidden Gem: Santa Lucia Preserve Minutes from Famous Pebble Beach, California

Recently,we had the pleasure to visit Santa Lucia Preserve near famous Pebble Beach, California. Our host was Riley Ramones who is the head pro at the Tom Fazio designed golf course.

This golf course is described on the web site as “a pastoral landscape ringed by mountains - a canvas unencumbered by roads, homes, or distraction - and the result is one of the most serene and beautifully challenged 18 holes on the planet. Every tee is a postcard, every green a reward. Here bathed in the warm California sunshine is a private experience that lives up to its perennial top 100 ranking.” Memberships are available for both residents and non-residents.

This private community sits on 20,000 acres. 18,000 acres are protected in perpetuity by a conservation land trust. There are just 297 home sites. Besides golf, Santa Lucia has a world class Equestrian Center, 3 dining venues, coffee house, lodging at the historic Hacienda, and a state-of-the-art Sports

Center. In addition, there is glamping and water sports at Moore’s Lake, sporting courts and a swim center. In addition to lots of fun in the sun, it is a great place for business meetings and weddings.

Our round of golf was very special, having the entire golf course to ourselves and aided by our knowledgeable caddy and golf pro.

After golf, we enjoyed a great lunch with sensational views of this special place.

We would highly recommend you make an appointment to tour this ‘slice’ of heaven. Having been to Augusta twice, the drive into the Santa Lucia Preserve rivals the ‘goose bumps’ you get when driving into Augusta on Magnolia Lane.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance

TVAR Dog/Puppy Foster Program: CoffeeAdorable, Fun-Loving Youngster

Coffee is a 1-year-old, Spaniel/Dachshund mix. He weighs 13 pounds. He has been a nice guest in his foster home where he has mastered house training, sleeps in a crate at night, and he’s learning commands. He’s a no-fuss foodie, and settles down for naps while his foster family works nearby. Coffee will love an active family that provides regular exercise and activities. He does well with other energetic, similar size dogs. All of TVAR’s foster dogs and pups like Coffee are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. They all live in foster homes till adopted; this allows foster families to get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting - allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

TVAR Foster Kitten/Cat Program: Mama Jackie Mama Jackie, named because she looks like a Jack-O-Lantern, is a beautiful and unique buff tabby cat who is mom to three handsome grey tabby boys. Jackie’s right eye was underdeveloped and infected when she was surrendered to the animal shelter with her kittens. TriValley Animal Rescue was able to take her and her family in, remove the eye and alleviate her pain, and provide her with love and support

in a foster home. Jackie will now be able to flourish when she finds her forever home. She loves a good head bump and chin scratch and will curl up next to you after you feed her, chirping and purring.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes It is through the collaborative efforts of TVAR’s volunteers and foster families that these kittens, once vulnerable and in need, are now on a path toward a future brimming with hope, joy, and endless possibilities.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance.

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

Feeling Stuck? Ready to Move but You Don’t Want to Sell First?

Buying

You are ready to make the move, downsizing to a smaller home, transitioning to a retirement community, moving to be closer to the grandkids, or maybe relocating out-of-state. Whatever the dream is, you are ready!

You may have even found “the one,” but you are feeling stuck because you think you have to sell your current home first and then you think of everything you have to do to make that happen, like moving all of the things you’ve collected over the years to storage, doing repairs and renovations, replacing your weathered furniture with a more contemporary look… and you give up the dream because you feel stuck!

There is good news for people feeling stuck: with enough equity, you can buy your next home BEFORE having to sell your current home. In fact, did you know that over 75% of homeowners in Danville have enough equity and can buy their next home before they must sell? 75%! Are YOU one of them?

If you are considering moving here are some of the advantages of buying your next home before selling your current one.

1. Locate your dream home now

When you are able to buy a new home before selling your current one, you have more time to explore different properties and neighborhoods without feeling rushed. You can take your time to find the home of your dreams without worrying about the added pressure of having to move out of your current home quickly… and your offer on the new home will be noncontingent on selling your old home!

2. Avoiding temporary housing costs

Having to live in temporary housing until you can find your next home can be expensive and inconvenient, especially if you have a family or pets. When you buy a new home first, you can avoid these costs and move directly into your new home.

3. Less pressure to accept lower offers

When you have moved out and your current home is fixed up and properly staged, you’re in a better position to negotiate with potential buyers. More buyers will be interested in your

home and this competition will ensure you get the highest possible offer.

4. Avoiding a rushed move

When you buy your new home before selling your current one, you can take your time to pack, organize, and move at your own pace without worrying about strict deadlines.

5. Ability to make renovations or repairs

If you buy your new home before selling your current one, you have the flexibility to renovate the new home before moving in, fix up the old home without you in it, or both! In either case, you won’t have to deal with the inconvenience of living in a construction zone while you’re making these changes.

Buying your next home before selling your current home can have significant benefits. By giving yourself more time to find your dream home, avoiding temporary housing costs, and having the flexibility to make renovations, you can ensure that your next move is a smooth and stressfree process. Additionally, with less pressure to accept lower offers and avoiding a rushed move, you can make sure that you get the best price for your current home and enjoy the process of moving into your new one.

Are you tired of battling hair loss and are longing for a more confident, rejuvenated appearance? It’s a fact that hair loss can take a toll on your self-esteem and hinder your social interactions, but there’s no need to suffer in silence. You can now take advantage of comprehensive, no-cost consultations with a resident expert at our Blackhawk Hair Restoration Center.

During this complimentary consultation, we will review your medical history, discuss your hair loss journey, do a hair and scalp dermoscopy and analysis to assess your current situation, and discuss the various surgical and non-surgical hair restoration options tailored to your individual needs.

Surgical procedures have evolved dramatically over the years, and our center offers state-of-the-art techniques to help you achieve natural-looking, permanent results. From Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), which involves transplanting hair follicles from a donor area to the recipient area, to Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a minimally invasive procedure known for its precision and rapid recovery, our surgical options are designed to restore your hair with precision and care.

For those seeking non-surgical alternatives, our practice offers innovative treatments that have proven efficacy in halting hair loss and promoting regrowth. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, which uses your body’s own growth factors to stimulate hair follicles, has gained popularity for its ability to naturally enhance hair density. Additionally, our exclusive HairMAXX protocol employs micro-needling and laser technology to stimulate blood flow to the scalp, fostering a healthier environment for hair growth.

Blackhawk Scholarship Fund

The Blackhawk Scholarship Fund was formed in 2002 by a group of Blackhawk women with hopes of forming a non-profit organization to assist accomplished, but financially challenged, high school women with their college education. Through the years they spearheaded fundraising efforts to give scholarships to recipients with the following criteria:

1. Female

2. Contra Costa resident

3. 3.5 minimum GPA

4. Financial need

5. Significant involvement in community service

6. Headed to a 4-year college or university (can be a transfer from a community college)

In May, we awarded $14,000 to 4 women from high schools in Antioch, Richmond,

Concord and Danville. To date BSF has granted over $425,000 to over 108 women. The following is a testimonial from a recent recipient:

Asal B. “The scholarship I received from BSF allowed me to gain financial independence during college. I recently graduated UCLA with a B.S. in Human Biology and Society with NO DEBT all paid for by amazing scholarships like BSF! I’m currently working at UCSF as an intern in the transplant center and recently applied to medical school. Thank you, BSF!”

Participating in this important cause is very rewarding and BSF welcomes any interested men and women to join the effort to further higher education for so many talented and deserving young women. We welcome you to contact us at bwscholarshipfund@gmail.com.

Danville Community Pianos Are Back!

TheDanville Community Pianos are back for a fourth year! Two local students were selected through a call for artists to depict their favorite play, book, musical, or song on a painted piano. The original designs for this year’s pianos were inspired by musicals The Sound of Music and Hamilton. The two pianos will be on display through mid-October.

At the Danville Community Center, a piano designed by student artist Jiya Chauhan was inspired by the song “Do-Re-Mi” from The Sound of Music. The book-themed musical, inspired by The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Von Trapp ties into the summer’s theme of art and reading in Danville. The back of the piano features

a silhouette of Maria, the governess who brought a new love of life and music into the Von Trapp household. The piano is also decorated with flowers and musical notes, representing a harmonious life.

The hit musical Hamilton served as inspiration for the piano at the Veterans Memorial Building, in front of the Danville Community Center. Student artist Emmeline Millington calls on the lyrics and quotes, including the countdown in French featured as Eliza Schuyler taught her son piano. The pages depicted on the piano each have a different quote from Emmeline’s favorite characters in the musical. The piano is finished with the iconic star silhouette on the back, inspired by the musical poster.

The Danville Community Center is at 420 Front Street, and the Veterans Memorial Building is at 400 Hartz Avenue. For more information on the summer art exhibits and projects, visit www.danville.ca.gov/arts.

NEW CHILD SAFETY LAWS FOR THE WINDOW COVERING INDUSTRY AND WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU

Weall want our homes to be safe for our family, but according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, for years corded window coverings have been a hidden hazard. That era is now over, corded window blinds are no longer being sold by American stores or websites.

The Window Covering Manufacturers Association now requires all stock and custom window coverings sold through dealers to be cordless or designed with inaccessible or short cords.

It may have taken 70 years, but we’re so glad to see this change! At Elite Shutters and Shadings we feature Hunter Douglas window coverings who have been at the forefront of product safety for years.

Virtually every window covering type is available with a “cordless” operating system, which means it has been designed to function without an operating cord. In lieu of an operating cord, cordless operating systems can be manual or motorized. A manual operating system allows users to lift or lower the window covering with a handle or directly by hand. A motorized operating system uses a motor and control system to manipulate the window covering, such as a remote control or wall switch. The new Hunter Douglas PowerView Gen3 automated system allows shade control with a standard remote control device or downloading the free app to your iPhone or iPad for even more convenience.

There are still some “corded” systems available such as UltraGlide retractable wand which covers and protects the lift cord and comes standard on some products such as the Duette cellular shades.

If you already have a corded product in your home, here are some safety tips.

• Check the manufacturer’s website to verify that it has not been recalled due to potential hazards.

• Place your children’s furniture and toys far away from all windows so that the temptation to play with blind cords is out of sight and hopefully out of mind.

• If your product came with a wall cleat or hold down tensioner, be sure to use them every single time you adjust the shades!

For more information please contact us and we will guide you through the options that work best for your project.

Phantom of the Golf Ball

Niners

2023 Invitational was a memorable day!

Niners and guests arrived at the Lakeside Opera House decked out in matching costumes of black, white and red and glammed up their outfits with spectacular and unique masquerade masks. Act #1 included registration, photo opportunities, pre-game libations and breakfast snacks. Golfers then headed out to their respective starting holes, calculating scores for the two best net balls on each hole. Fun challenges were arranged out on the course with a “hit the phantom mask” on #7 & #10, help from a pro hitting on #5 & #18 and accuracy drives on #3 & #11. The Phantom mysteriously appeared on the course for pictures with the ladies. Intermission was a putting contest complete with challenging obstacles. Golfers then concluded their game and proceeded to the ballroom. The Phantom emerged from the catacombs below the bar to greet golfers with a glass of champagne. The crystal chandelier was repaired and golfers enjoyed a delicious lunch of roasted breast of chicken with tomatoes, mozzarella, crispy prosciutto with red pepper cream sauce, scalloped potatoes and steamed asparagus Dessert followed with chocolate covered strawberries and a brownie topped with dulce de leche ice cream. Raffle prizes were gift certificates to Round Hill CC & Crow Canyon CC, golf themed gift baskets and

a 50/50 drawing with proceeds going to Youth on the Course. The final act was the announcement of the winners of each flight and the much anticipated horse race. The theater lights went dark and the Opera Ghost disappeared somewhere deep into the opera house chambers.

Standing ovation to tournament extraordinaire, Linda McColgan and committee, the hard working BCC catering staff, putting contest officials MJ McColgan, Mike McColgan, Bill Bump, and Chris Melcher, photographer Dave Davis, and “Phantom” Craig Johnson. Applause for golf pros Brian Brake, Andrew Brown and Thomas Fong who planned and supervised the horse race. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who participated.

We couldn’t have done it without our amazing coaching staff lead by Sean, Georgi, Melissa, Michelle, Vicki, Livvy, Amelia, Allie, Jordan and all our junior coaches. Thank you for all your dedication and unwavering support of our swimmers and bringing out the best in every one of them! Thank you for your dedication to our team.

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who supported us throughout the season. From bringing our young swimmers to the deck for practices and meets to fulfilling all your job commitments to running successful meets throughout the season. Fred ‘Fritz’ Scharff Golf Tournament Returns

Fred

‘Fritz’ Scharff’s involvement with Mustang Soccer began in 1980 when his youngest daughter, Ashley, wanted to play Al Caffodio, just like her older sister, Kirsten. Even though he did not have an ounce of soccer coaching experience and because there was no coach, Fritz stepped up for the U10 Mustang Thunderbirds. He continued to coach this same team for 10 years, won three state cup championships, and sent a large portion of the team off to play in college. During this same time period, Fritz also held many positions on the Mustang Soccer Board and Mustang Soccer became one of the biggest parts and joys of his life. With the Thunderbirds all away in college, Fritz found great joy in going to Osage Park to watch soccer games on the weekends. On one of those glorious spectator days, he was recruited to help coach another group of girls and again stayed with them through their U18 year. Fritz then took several years off from coaching, but when his daughter, Ashley, moved back to Danville with her husband and newborn baby, Lauren. They decided to coach and did so together for 8 years until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. Fritz was a very successful coach and proud of his positive impact on many girls’ lives. During his tenure, he gave over 25 years of service to the club, strictly as a volunteer. Fritz passed away on February 14, 2014, at the age of 71. The annual tournament was named in honor of Fritz the fall before his passing, in 2013.

Please join us for a fantastic opportunity as our community comes together to celebrate our club and a true Mustang Soccer legend!
