Dear Neighbors,

Whether you love football, the new fall TV season, the holiday blockbusters on the horizon, or the oodles of new books to devour, October is a good time to be a fan. I can’t be the only one tempted to spend a day on the couch with a bowl of popcorn.

I love October in Blackhawk when the beautiful fall colors are in full swing, the houses are decorated with ghosts and goblins and we get to see the neighborhood kids in their costumes. The community of Blackhawk always comes together to make the season special.

This month you’ll meet your neighbors, The King Family. They are all about fun, adventure and hard work, we are thrilled to share their family story with you.

We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share, please email me at mscott@ bestversionmedia.com.

Warmly,

Megan Scott

blazing, a fire and rescue team came to get us. The good news was that no one was hurt, only a little shaken up, especially the pilot. We both haven’t been on or had any interest in a helicopter ride since,” says Maureen.

Karl was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and moved to Pleasanton when he was in high school. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from UC San Diego and a Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah. He currently works in technology sales, providing storage solutions for large data centers in Silicon Valley.

Maureen was born in Walnut Creek, and moved to Washington State as a baby, then back to Livermore when she was nine years old. She is currently working with Tucker Associates Real Estate Services in Blackhawk. Licensed since 2001, Maureen takes great pride in delivering exceptional service to her clientele. She is also currently targeting investing and Airbnb’s for her clients.

Meet the Making Beautiful Music Together

King Family:

Twenty-two years ago, Maureen made her regular stop at her local gym, San Ramon 24-Hour Fitness, to fit some exercise into her busy day. Little did she know, this would not turn out to be an ordinary day because Karl had also stopped in for his workout, and their paths were about to cross and change their lives forever. After talking at the gym, Maureen says they both realized they attended the same church. “It was wild because Karl lived in Los Gatos and I lived in Danville, so what were the chances of us meeting and having so much in common? We both knew we were the one because we have similar interests, like our faith, fitness, and longing to start a family. Our theme is based on mutual love, helping each other feel special and heard while brightening up each other’s world,” shares Maureen.

The couple married in 2005 and honeymooned in Maui, which ended up involving a helicopter crash. “On the third day of our honeymoon, I talked Karl into taking a helicopter ride. Karl was not too thrilled about it but agreed. At first, it was beautiful as we viewed volcanoes and waterfalls, but after a malfunction of the rear rotor, our helicopter ended up spinning out of control and crashing in a sugarcane field next to the airport. Sixteen-year-old daughter Sydney and two rescue Tabby cat brothers, Sox and Boots, complete the family. Sydney attends Valor Global Online School. Sydney spends her summers volunteering for local church camps. She loves being a junior leader and helping the kids. She’s also involved in theater and singing, and she plays soccer with the Mustangs Soccer Club and swims with the HOX Swim Team. “Sydney and her Dad have taken part in the Father Daughter dance with Tiffany Dance School for the past ten years. They perform at Chabot College every year. In addition, Sydney and I have three shows a year singing at the Alameda County Fair on the grandstand stage. Sydney’s recorded her first song, “Reach for the Stars,” that will be released this year! We all have a passion for music, and Sydney played piano for years and has composed her own music and lyrics from a young age,” says Maureen.

The King family is full of passions and talents, and they love sharing their joy with others. Maureen has been a professional Jazz singer for the past ten years, including headlining the San Jose Jazz Festival and performing at Wente Winery in Livermore. She recorded her first album in Nashville in 2007 and is currently working on her second album, “Heaven”. Maureen also has a passion for ministry and is currently working on

a book called You are Genius. “My new book will be available in a few months. It’s basically a simple 21-day read of all my research on my favorite authors in one book,” says Maureen.

Karl’s passion has always been to adopt or be a foster parent. “I do believe one day this will happen. We’ve been waiting for the right time. Currently, we are sponsoring four kids through Compassion International. We both volunteered for ten years as AWANA Leaders for kids at Valley Community Church. We are also involved in St Jude, Heavenly Beds, Kids Against Hunger and Monthly Miracles,” says Maureen. The family says they have found a second home at The Rock Church. “Our most favorite thing about Danville is that we absolutely love our church! The Rock Church in Danville! We have met so many new friends who have become family now.”

Travel and quality family time together are top priorities for the King family. They love to camp by the coast, ski in Lake Tahoe, golf at Pebble Beach, and stay at the Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos. “We take a family trip each year to Hawaii. We love snorkeling, zip lining over the waterfalls, horseback riding, swimming with dolphins, hiking in the volcanoes, visiting our favorite restaurants, and watching the sunsets! We recently purchased a five acre ranch in Temecula Wine Country. We plan on adding some vacation rentals to our property. Because of the ranch, we are spending more time in the San Diego area now. The best part of our trips is being together and hanging out! We have so much laughter and fun,” says Maureen.

Blackhawk residents since 2020, The Kings live on the East side of Blackhawk Dr. They feel blessed to be a part of the community. “We wanted a gated community and resort style living. We love the extra security and safety here! The neighbors are all so friendly and welcoming. We live on the 7th green, with the golf course and rolling hills as our backyard views. Karl loves to golf with neighbors in Blackhawk. We feel extremely blessed to be a part of the Blackhawk Community. We love to go for walks as a family, and we have met so many neighbors just walking around admiring the beauty of our community. There’s no place like Blackhawk - It’s one of a kind!”

How to help our Veterans and Active Duty Servicemembers

After graduating from college, in 2022 my son enlisted in the Army. He’s in the infantry, stationed in Germany. His decision has introduced me to a new community in the San Ramon Valley, the Blue Star Moms. This community is made up of people who are committed to helping our Veteran and Active Duty servicemembers.

When I talk about my son, I am asked how our generous community can help.

If you would like to get involved, here are some ideas for you. Start by visiting the Veterans Memorial Building on Hartz Avenue in Danville. We all pass by, but I think few of us go in. Inside you will find a wonderful, small museum dedicated to the

men and women from our valley that have served. Docents are there daily to help. A docent helped me fold an American flag the correct way so I could display in my home. It’s harder than it looks to make a perfect triangle. If you have items like medals from your veteran family members, they can teach you how to display properly.

Part of Blue Star Moms mission is to send care packages to our deployed troops. There is a permanent food collection site at the Coldwell Banker office in The Livery. If you’d like to donate food for care packages, this is a convenient way to do this. We need items that can ship well. Examples could include protein bars, beef jerky, flavored powders for water. Think snacks.

I also discovered that Las Positas College has a fantastic Veteran’s program. Veterans First helps hundreds of veterans and their families exercise their veteran benefits and attend college. On October 21st, the Veterans First Program will have a fun day of activity called 2.2 for 22 Challenge for Veterans. Come out and participate. Some of the things you could do last year included pet a service animal for 2.2 minutes and talk to a Veteran for 2.2 minutes. There were many fun activities tied to the number 22. It’s a great activity for kids and adults alike. You can find more information on the Las Positas website.

In the Kitchen

In a medium saucepan, add strawberries, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon rosewater and ¼ teaspoon cardamom. Over low heat, and partially covered saucepan simmer the contents about 10-15 minutes. Stir in lemon juice and continue simmering uncovered until the liquid thickens, and compote is made (slow cooking over gentle heat, stirring constantly is important for the milk does not scold and fruits to retain their shape.) Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Remove from heat, let cool and chill.

Prior to serving, generously top each chilled custard with strawberries compote and garnish with rose petals and toasted pistachio.

A Fresh Start for Fall

As the fall season approaches, many of us are looking for ways to rejuvenate our appearance and step into the holiday season with renewed confidence. Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa offers a range of cosmetic procedures that can help you achieve a more youthful and revitalized look. Below, we explore some popular surgical treatments that can leave you looking your best just in time for fall.

1. Liposuction:

If you’re looking to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat and achieve a more contoured figure, liposuction is a highly effective solution. This procedure removes excess fat from areas like the abdomen, thighs, hips, and arms, enhancing your overall body shape. Liposuction is a relatively quick procedure, typically lasting from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the extent of treatment. Recovery times may vary, but most patients can resume normal activities within a few days, with visible results becoming more apparent as swelling subsides.

2. Rhinoplasty: Balance Your Facial Harmony

Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a “nose job,” is a routine cosmetic procedure designed to enhance facial harmony by correcting the shape and size of the nose. I perform an Open or Structure Rhinoplasty, which is a more precise and modern approach that provides a stronger and aesthetically pleasing result. The incisions for this type of rhinoplasty are strategically placed to minimize scarring, and they typically blend seamlessly. This procedure not only addresses external aesthetic concerns but can also tackle internal functional issues like obstruction and septal deviation. Rhinoplasty usually takes between 60 to 90 minutes to complete, with a recovery period of approximately one week.

3. Face and Neck Lift:

As we age, the skin on our face and neck loses elasticity, accompanied by natural fat and muscle tone loss. A facelift and neck lift combination can help turn back the clock and restore a more youthful appearance. At Blackhawk Plastic Surgery we employ a modern short scar technique for facelifts, minimizing the incision to achieve a natural look and a faster recovery. This procedure often involves the addition of fat to areas like the lower lid and cheekbones, counteracting the effects of natural fat loss over time. The duration of face and neck lift procedures varies from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery. Each patient’s unique needs are carefully considered, and the specifics of the procedure, including recovery time, will be discussed during the initial consultation.

The Links at Fieldwork, City Center San Ramon

Inside Fieldwork Brewery at City Center in San Ramon is an immersive experience that comes with all the yummy food and drink we love from Fieldwork, paired with two comfortable lounges that are equipped with their own state-of-the-art golf simulators along with other virtual games. It’s the perfect activity for kids, adults and anyone who wants to head indoors for some interactive gaming. You can practice your swing on a PGA course or take part in some friendly competition with a variety of interactive games including Zombie Baseball, Dodgeball, and virtual hockey.

We checked out The Links for my niece’s 10th birthday, and she said it was her new favorite place. It combined golf and gaming, which are two of her biggest joys in life. We enjoyed pizzas, drinks and spent hours throwing carnival balls, playing dodgeball with zombies, swinging golf clubs, throwing footballs, kicking soccer balls and more.

Next time you are at City Center, we highly reccommend stopping in Fieldwork to check out The Links.

PI- ADORABLE THREE LEGGED PUPPY READY FOR HER NEW FOREVER HOME

Pi is a 6-7 month old puppy who is a bundle of love and energy. Unfortunately Pi came into the shelter with a serious injury to her front leg where she was likely hit by a car. After an extensive examination by our veterinarian, the team decided that the best course of action was to amputate the leg. Now Pi is unencumbered by a non-functional leg and free to be the precocious puppy that she is. And it hasn’t stopped her for one minute. Her recovery from her amputation and spay have gone extremely well, so this girl is ready to find a home which will give her the love and attention this girl deserves. In spite of her being a 3-legged puppy, Pi will love an active family that provides regular exercise and activities. She does well with other dogs.

All of TVAR’s foster dogs and pups like Pi are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. They all live in foster homes till adopted; this allows foster families to get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting - allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

ZUKO- ADORABLE KITTY LOOKING FOR HIS NEW FOREVER HOME

Meet Zuko, a handsome white kitty cat with small orange tabby splashes on his head and tail. Zuko came from a large litter of 12 kittens, all of which looked slightly different! TVAR was luckily able to take his entire litter into one foster home and find homes for all his siblings. Zuko is the only one left who needs a forever home! He is a unique boy who loves to sit up straight on his hind legs with his front paws in the air and follows his foster mom around like a dog, always wanting in on the action. He loves to be petted and will give you a little love nibble when you stop as if asking you to continue loving him.

Zuko is about 10 months old now and patiently awaiting his forever home.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

It is through the collaborative efforts of TVAR’s volunteers and foster families that these kittens, once vulnerable and in need, are now on a path toward a future brimming with hope, joy, and endless possibilities.

All of TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love, medical care, and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Cats, Kittens, Puppies and Dogs - and the Public . Without our TVAR Shelter Program Volunteers - so many more of these deserving animals would be lost.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance. TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

ECNL Team

Goes on a Trip to Spain

Members of our 2007 and 2008 Boys ECNL Teams recently traveled on the trip of their lifetime to Spain! Coach Dana Taylor provided an opportunity for members to go on a tour curated by Eture, a company that specializes in developing and providing soccer opportunities that include international competitive training and tournament tours, along with immersion in the Spanish culture to discover the uniqueness of Spanish cities. The players traveled to Barcelona, Peñíscola, and Valencia.

Alison Chandler, mother of Nate Chandler, an 08B ECNL player, really enjoyed the trip and felt it was a success on many levels. “The trip included a chaperone and a family option which allowed for the inclusion of many players. Although all the players have traveled on domestic chaperone trips before, all have not traveled internationally before to play soccer.” Alison thought the option to participate on their own terms was the best of both worlds. “As parents, along with a 13-yearold brother, who came along for fun, we were able to participate with the team when we wanted to participate; however, we were also able to explore the beautiful cities of Barcelona, Peñíscola, and Valencia, as well as ride the train through the countryside at our leisure. We especially enjoyed the food and culture and watching Nate improve in his soccer.” Nate was invited as a 2008 player to play with the impressive 2007 team, who are 3x ECNL Nor Cal Conference Champions, for the past three consecutive years. Alison noted, “This opportunity allowed Nate to learn a new position, be supported by talented players, and be forced to make challenging decisions against bigger/faster/sometimes 19-year-old players.” According to Nate Chandler, the Eture campus experience was special and memorable. He also

especially enjoyed, “the excitement before our first game in Peñíscola, all the cultural experiences, the castle tour, the beach day, and the FOOD!”

Alison and Nate both agreed, the hospitality shared by the Eture staff and the experience is nothing the players and their families have ever experienced before. “The players were able to participate in a small town celebration, were greeted after their first game with a barbecue welcome dinner, and Eture staff welcomed the players as if they were life-long friends. All of the cultural experiences, the tour of Camp Nou, and the soccer experiences of their trip allowed the boys to see life in Spain as a footballer.” Dana Taylor, coach of the 2007 and 2008 Boys ECNL Teams, feels, “Spain has it all - be it swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, walking the castle steps where the Crusaders and the Pope walked, seeing some of the top soccer stadiums, sampling the Spanish cuisine, or walking the old Roman City Streets of Valencia, which was just voted the #1 city in the world to visit! But to strap on your boots and play against Spanish players to test our skills and to do it with teammates, that are your brothers, makes it so special.” Special thanks to Alison Chandler, Nate Chandler, and coach Dana Taylor, for their time and insight into this special trip of a lifetime!

HOX Swim Updates

Thereis a crispness in the air, and the leaves are starting to show that hint of color change. Hints of Halloween and pumpkin spice are everywhere, and our swimmers are still swimming! Did you know that we run a Fall Swim Program? The pool is heated year-round, and just because it isn’t 90 degrees outside, doesn’t mean there isn’t a good reason to keep on swimming. Some kids only swim in the summer, but some kids have a really hard time getting out of the water. Our fall program has different tiers designed for different swimmers. Please reach out to Coach Sean Quackenbush for more information: seanq@blackhawkcc.org

Blackhawk also runs a High School Prep program for the high schoolers that are looking for conditioning prior to the start of the local high school swim team start dates. The dates of the High School Prep program are TBD, but generally run November through early February. Please contact Coach Sean for more information about the high school prep program: seanq@blackhawkcc.org

It’s never too late to join in some of the HOX fun at the pool, stop on by and see what we are up to.

THE RISE OF Traditional Advertising IN 2023

Digital advertising exploded over the past decade as businesses of all sizes flocked to online platforms to market themselves. While many digital opportunities are highly effective and can help your business grow, traditional forms of advertising are a powerful tool that remain on the rise. By using print media in tandem with digital advertising, you create a winning combination that elevates your marketing plan above the competition.

BREAK THROUGH THE NOISE

Think outside of the box when it comes to your branding efforts. Consider going where your competition doesn’t already exist instead of competing in the same arena. One key advantage of print media is its ability to reach a hyperlocal audience on a consistent basis. It allows you to build awareness and loyalty by delivering your message right to the mailboxes of residents in the community. Break through the noise and create a well-rounded strategy by adding print media into your branding mix!

BOOST YOUR DIGITAL EFFORTS

Many business owners make the mistake of choosing one advertising medium over another versus creating an impactful mix of both. Implementing a strong print component can boost your digital presence as well. This way, when consumers see your business on social media or their search engine, they’re already familiar with your business and more likely to take action.1

TAP INTO A TRUSTED MARKET

It’s been shown that consumers trust print media more than any other form of advertising. In fact, according to MarketSherpa, 82% of American internet users trust print ads over other forms of advertising when making a purchasing decision.2 Building a well-balanced print and digital marketing strategy is a fantastic way to make a solid first impression and a lasting impact on potential customers.

Diamond Eternity Bands: A Timeless

Wardrobe Staple

In the world of jewelry, certain pieces stand the test of time and effortlessly transition from one fashion trend to another. One such perennial favorite of our team at Padis Jewelry is the diamond eternity band, a stunning and versatile accessory that has earned its reputation as a timeless wardrobe staple. With its timeless elegance and enduring appeal, the diamond eternity band is not just a piece of jewelry; it’s a symbol of everlasting love and a must-have in every jewelry collection.

Before delving into why diamond eternity bands have become an integral part of our wardrobes, let’s take a brief look at their history. The concept of an eternity band can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where rings made of precious metals and gemstones were exchanged as symbols of eternal commitment. The circle, with no beginning or end, represented an unbroken bond.

It wasn’t until the 1960s that the diamond eternity band as we know it today gained popularity. Hollywood icons like Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn embraced this trend, showcasing their exquisite diamond bands to the world. Since then, the diamond eternity band has remained a symbol of everlasting love and a fashionable accessory that transcends time and trends.

Versatility in Design

One of the key reasons diamond eternity bands make such a fantastic wardrobe staple is their versatility in design. These bands come in various styles, making it easy to find one that suits your personal taste and complements your individual style.

• Classic and Timeless: The traditional design features a continuous row of uniformly sized diamonds set in precious metal, often in a prong or channel setting. This classic style pairs seamlessly with both formal attire and casual wear, making it an ideal choice for any occasion.

• Modern and Unique: If you’re looking to make a bold statement, consider a contemporary twist on the classic eternity band. Some designs incorporate mixed shapes or colored gemstones, adding a pop of color and personality to the piece. These modern variations are perfect for those who want to stand out from the crowd.

• Stackable and Customizable: One of the most appealing aspects of diamond eternity bands is their ability to be stacked with other rings. You can mix and match different metals, diamond sizes, or even add other gemstones to create a unique combination that reflects your personality and style. This versatility allows you to change your look effortlessly and adapt to different occasions.

Symbolism and Sentiment

A diamond eternity band isn’t just a piece of jewelry; it carries profound symbolism and sentimental value. These rings symbolize eternal love and commitment, making them popular choices for wedding bands and anniversary gifts. The continuous circle of diamonds represents an unending and everlasting bond, making them a powerful reminder of the love shared between two people.

Furthermore, diamond eternity bands are often chosen as heirloom pieces, passed down through generations as a symbol of family traditions and enduring love. The sentimental value attached to these rings transforms them into cherished family heirlooms, further solidifying their status as wardrobe staples.

A Perfect Complement to Any Occasion

Whether you’re dressing up for a formal gala or going for a casual brunch with friends, a diamond eternity band is the perfect accessory to complete your look. Its timeless beauty seamlessly transitions from day to night, adding a touch of elegance to any outfit.

For formal occasions, a classic diamond eternity band can serve as the ideal complement to your evening gown or cocktail dress. Its understated, yet sophisticated, design adds a touch of luxury without overpowering your overall look. On the other hand, for casual outings, a stackable or more modern eternity band can effortlessly elevate your style, adding a touch of sparkle to your everyday wear.

In a world where fashion trends come and go, the diamond eternity band remains a steadfast wardrobe staple. Its versatility in design, enduring symbolism, durability, and ability to complement any occasion make it an essential piece of jewelry that transcends time and fashion. Whether you’re celebrating a special milestone or simply enhancing your everyday style, a diamond eternity band is a timeless and elegant choice that will never go out of fashion. Invest in this iconic piece, and you’ll find that it becomes not only a cherished accessory but also a symbol of your everlasting love and enduring style.

Our teams at Padis Jewelry Walnut Creek, San Francisco or Napa are happy to assist you in any way with with viewing and selecting the eternity band that best fits your personal style. Don’t hesitate to visit us at one of our commission-free shopping environments if we can be of assistance! We treasure the generations of families who allow us to become a part of their most precious moments.
