Resident Feature our wedding ceremonies, where we had ceremonies from each of our cultures and international celebrations with our families and friends celebrating both in America and Singapore!” says Rishi. Rishi was born in India and raised in Singapore. He had an opportunity to pursue an accounting degree at the University of San Francisco and decided to go for it! In 2007, Rishi graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He began his career working for major accounting firms in the audit department, which required a lot of dedication and long hours. When Rishi and Surina decided to start a family, he says he tried to find a workplace that provided a good work-life balance. “I quickly realized this was extremely difficult to do. After struggling to find a work-life balance after our first child was born, Surina’s dad announced he was looking for a CFO for his company, and after long discussions and putting thought into it, we decided this would provide me the opportunity to enhance my career but still provide the balance I craved to be able to be there for my children.” Rishi currently holds a CFO role in a mid-sized family business that owns and develops real estate, with franchised businesses. Surina’s parents own the business and are partners with her uncle. It is a true family business at it’s finest!

mutual friend introduced Rishi and Surina while they were students at the University of San Francisco. “We met in college in the spring of 2005 and became a couple soon after. After graduation, I went on to law school, and Rishi began a career with Ernst & Young in the audit practice. By 2007, we were living together; in 2008, Rishi proposed; and we were married in 2010,” says Surina. The couple worked to honor their different cultures in their wedding. “We went through so many adventures together, and we knew we were going to get married and continue our journey through life’s challenges together. We had many ups and downs throughout our time together prior to getting married, as we came from different backgrounds, countries, cultures, and religions, but somehow we made it work through compromise because we knew we wanted to create a life together. Our blended backgrounds even showed throughout

Surina was born in Mountain View and raised in Yuba City. She moved to San Francisco to attend college and get out of the small town she grew up in. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from USF. She then went on to get her Juris Doctorate from UC Hastings College of Law. “I had a passion for writing, arguing positions, analyzing the law, and applying it. Upon graduating, I secured a position with Farmer’s Insurance managing litigated injury claims. Once my son was born, though, I could not get myself to leave him at daycare to go into work,” says Surina. Luckily, while she was on maternity leave, her dad began expanding his company and was in need of a person to head development. It was a perfect match for Surina’s skill set, and, best of all, she was able to bring Riyahn, her son, into work with her. She was able to obtain the work-life balance she craved and still be able to raise her kids and be with them during their early years. Once she became pregnant with her third child, Surina resigned as Director of Development and enjoys being a stay-athome mom. In addition, the couple also owns a franchised restaurant: Black Bear Diner in Colma, CA. “We fell in love with the brand Black Bear Diner. We loved their corporate team and what they stood for, as well as the restaurant concept and the coziness we felt every time we stepped inside. We decided we would like to personally turn our love for the concept into ownership. We currently operate the restaurant ourselves with the help of a General Manager who manages the day-to-day operations of the restaurant,” says Surina. San Francisco was their home base for many years, but once the couple started thinking about having children, they knew they wanted to move to a suburb with a

home and more space. They found the perfect starter home in Novato, then in 2016, moved to Alamo Creek in Danville. “While quarantining together during COVID, we realized our wants and needs had changed since we first moved into the home we were living in. We wanted a larger backyard space, more mature landscaping surrounding us, and a more peaceful ambiance in our neighborhood. We had many friends who lived in Blackhawk who spoke highly of the neighborhood, and in 2020, we found the perfect home and made the move to Blackhawk. We completely remodeled the home, designed the house and picked out each material ourselves. We managed the entire renovation process and now feel like this is our dream home,” says Rishi. The three kids in the Kaul family are nine-year-old Riyahn, seven-year-old Sahara, and three-year-old Raynav. Riyahn plays baseball on a Tri-Valley tournament team and has a passion for football and basketball as well. He enjoys going to 49er games and has always had a passion for puzzles and Legos. Sahara is on a competition dance team and enjoys singing and dancing. She loves listening to Jojo Siwa and taking long baths while singing along. Raynav loves cars and loves to kick a ball.

Surina enjoys working out, playing tennis, and going hiking. She loves to volunteer at the kids’ school. She is currently a room parent for Sahara’s classroom and actively volunteers throughout the year for all children at school. Surina enjoys traveling and planning events for special occasions. She also loves interior design and decorating and managed the entire home renovation project herself! The couple say they love the life they have created for their family here in Blackhawk, “We love living in Blackhawk. Our neighbors are great. We have developed many nice friendships and have seen our neighbors look out for one another like family. We love our serene surroundings and peaceful environment. A lot of our friends live within the Blackhawk gates, and we love the feeling of community we get here.”

Rishi used to be a professional cricket player in Singapore. He still represents Marin Cricket Club in the local Northern California Cricket League from time to time. In addition, Rishi has a passion for soccer and, in 2018, started a local soccer pickup group in Danville, which now boasts 80 members and plays pickup soccer almost every weekend morning. Life through a Lens

Kauai sunsets: a detox for the soul! By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

I

first visited Princeville, Kauai, two years back and instantly fell in love with the island and its breathtakingly gorgeous sunsets. With Kauai being one of the more isolated Hawaiian islands, its open beaches with unobstructed views of the coastline for miles, makes Kauai sunsets so clear, spectacular and unmatched, both in beauty and magnificence. The warm weather year around with humidity and moisture always in the air, helps scatter the sunlight and intensify the pink, orange, red and even purple and blue colors. And to top it off, add some volcanic pixie dust on it. Voila! Definitely, a must see! Ever since then, every time I go back, I fall in love with Kauai a whole bunches more.

Golf Destinations

Geneva National – The Palmer Course

By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

Back Nine Wooded

Front Nine Open

G

eneva National includes fifty-four holes designed by three legends of the game: Palmer, Player, and Trevino. Carved out of the rolling countryside of Southeastern Wisconsin four miles west of Lake Geneva, it’s near the shores of Lake Como. It’s an easy 90-minute drive from Chicago or Milwaukee. The club is semi-private, with a variety of membership opportunities. An array of shot-making skills is required due to the differences between the courses. The Palmer and Player courses are most memorable and more challenging, while the Trevino course is easier. The tees, fairways, and greens are all bentgrass. The Palmer Course is the longest of the three championship venues. From 2006 to 2008, it hosted an LPGA Futures Tour Event. It’s usually the favorite of the three courses for most golfers. Continuous elevation changes and tree-lined fairways provide both pastoral beauty and shotmaking challenge. Arnie shaped the wetlands actively. Each hole is different, and he offers different feels as you move around the course. I was struck by the marvelous mixture of open holes intermixed with tight forested holes, ending with three marvelous holes along the lake. These medium-sized greens are the toughest of the three courses with severe front-to-back slopes along with subtle breaks. Starting at the range, breathtaking views of Lake Como are commonplace. The course opens with a splendid Par4. A creek winds through the fairway

Lake Como Views

If You Go: at the corner of the sharply right dogleg, presenting danger for golfers who push it down the right side. Running toward the green, the creek protects it short and left on the approach shot. The Palmer course finishes with three marvelous holes along Lake Como. A striking contrast to the rest of the heavily wooded holes, these closing holes feel like a different course. Enjoy the scenery. The sixteenth is a long Par3, nicely protected by bunkers in the front and water in the back. The seventeenth is a medium length dogleg left Par5 entirely along Lake Como. Approach shots left of the green will be wet. There is no room for error. The eighteenth hole turns back to the clubhouse. It’s a problematic uphill Par4. This course can be tough if you’re not striking it well and especially if played from the wrong set of tees for your ability. The varied course architecture at the Palmer course at Geneva National is simply enjoyable and represents Arnold Palmer at his best.

16

Course Info - Geneva National Resort & Club includes fifty-four holes of championship golf with the Palmer, Player, and Trevino courses. Warm weather welcomed Niners and company to our Guest Day on September 28th By Fran Davis

F

un was the key word, and Niner’s enjoyed another memorable Guest Day with friends and family. Foursomes changed partners every third hole to calculate scores which provided golfers, that even a bad round with at least a good hole or two, ensuring a chance to win the golf challenge for the day. It may not have felt like fall on the golf course, but the tables at lunch were adorned with fall themed centerpieces. Andrew Brown tabulated scores and announced results with gift cards awarded to winners. In addition, there were a few bottles of wine given as door prizes. A BIG thank you to Shelley Foster and Lil Giovanzana for organizing another wonderful Guest Day and to Diane Manske for the centerpieces. Kudos to Shelley for the chocolate golf ball favors too!

HOX Swim Updates By Lisa Wirth

Mothers and daughters on Guest Day, Niners Ruth Chantland and MaryJane Novak with daughters Jennifer Schulte and Marina Beadle.

The Niners mission is to promote friendship and camaraderie through golf. The opportunity for competitive play is optional, but fun! If you are interested in learning more about joining, please email our membership chair, Kendel Goldthwaite at steitz5130@ aol.com Sandy Davis, September Charm Day Winner.

H

appy Fall from the HOX! We cannot believe that it’s that time of year when people are out shopping for the holidays and preparing for their Thanksgiving dinners. Although driving through the gates these days, the local turkeys don’t seem to be too concerned about their thanksgiving plans. The HOX board is busy working behind the scenes preparing for the next summer swim season. This is the time of year when the board is busy selecting the theme from all the submissions from our team members. Once the theme has been selected, then the real work begins for our board of all the planning, how a theme is going to play out. Shirts and products must get ordered, car magnets, banners, etc. Months of planning to make sure everything is ready for the theme to be revealed to the team at our March launch party. HOX held their annual Fall Classic Swim Meet in October and despite the rain, had 425 swimmers from all over the county come to swim at our pool. Our Fall swim program ends Friday 11/17. The Fall swim program extension for JO qualifiers and select age groups will continue training through the end of the year. The Blackhawk Country Club High School Prep swim program will begin in December, details to be published soon. We hope you are having a great fall season, whether it be in the pool or not. GO HOX!

alnut Creek has a lot of new amazing restaurants. They were showcased on Thursday 9/7 for the Annual Diablo Ballet Gourmet Gallop. What a fabulous way to try an array of restaurants with sips, tastes and bites. We had a wonderful evening strolling the streets, talking with friends and discovering wonderful restaurants. A true sense of community! Diablo Ballet puts on this fantastic event every year during the first week of September. The Gourmet Gallop benefits Diablo Ballet and its PEEK Outreach Program (Performing Arts Education & Enrichment for Kids), which is the only arts education program of its kind offered by a professional dance company in the Bay Area. Waterlight Plaza featured wine tasting by Fenestra Winery and wine and appetizers provided by The Garden; Steinway Piano Gallery featured wine tasting by McGrail Vineyards and a piano concert with wine glasses provided by Community Bank of the Bay. They also had a drawing for the concerts at the Garden, which is the former Scott’s. Lucky Linda won two tickets for the Prince concert on 10/27. Join us. Tickets are at: https://www.thegardenwc.com/. Restaurants that participated included: 5 Tacos and Beer, Broderick, Buon Vino, Massimo Ristorante, Opa!, Residual Sugar, Sauced, SF Creamery Co., Skipolini’s, Silk Road, Slice House, Tacos Walnut Creek, Tomatina, Torsap, and Walnut Creek Yacht Club. We highly recommend you look for this event next September. It is a great way to taste restaurant samples and sips as well as providing support for the Arts for our young people. Summer Classics Return By Celeste Altus

I

t was a beautiful, sunny day Sept. 9, 2023 when the East Bay Street Dreams car club returned to the Blackhawk Museum for its third Annual Car Show. The show took place in the lower parking lot of the Blackhawk Plaza, and featured many classic American muscle cars like Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Corvettes, and Camaros, all restored to premium condition. The EB Street Dreams club calls itself the “place where classic muscle and lowriders unite,” and its female founders had both, in spades. Among the beautiful machines on display were Chevy Impalas, Malibus and Olds Cutlasses. All cars were welcome and the occasional Ferrari could be spotted too. It’s easy to see why this popular club keeps drawing crowds every year. Celeste Altus is a freelance writer and content marketer specializing in technology, retail and finance. She lives in Danville, and keeps a car account on Instagram called @Cars_of_Danville.

Pet Corner

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance By Sue James, President

Klondike

They say, “go big or go home!” Klondike wants to know why he can’t do both? KLONDIKE IS A BIG, mellow, debonair and dashing Alaskan Malamute. And while he is A BIG BOY - his volunteer friends and shelter staff friends say he’s a pretty laid-back sort of guy. After all, more dog = more love, no? Klondike is approximately 7 years old, and currently weighs 144 lbs. Yup, you heard that right. But his favorite things to do are going on strolls, playing ball, lazing around in the yard, sleeping, and getting a whole lotta LOVE from his volunteer friends. He has already been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and dewormed, and is ready to go to his new home! If you are looking for a devoted, loving, adorable companion - Klondike could be the BIG BOY for you. He is located at the East County Animal Shelter – 4595 Gleason Drive in Dublin – Kennel A10. You can see more about Klondike and additional pictures and videos at www.tvar.org.

FOSTER KITTEN PROGRAM - BEAR

Bear was discovered at the shelter on the brink of death. Cold and weak, with hardly enough energy to let out a gentle meow for help, a four-week-old kitten was dying of something completely treatable. Bear had tapeworms. A TVAR foster scooped Bear up, syringe-fed him a mixture of kitten formula, hot water, and high-calorie wet food, gave him supplemental fluids, and dewormed him. Bear was taken home that night and nursed him back to health over the next several days. Helping neglected kittens like Bear is what TVAR is all about. With support from the community in terms of volunteering and donating, TVAR has been able to help many animals like Bear, neglected and struggling to survive, to have a second chance at a happy life. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance.

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

The Holidays are Upon Us – and Padis Jewelry is Here to Serve You in Walnut Creek! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry

B

lackhawk residents Steve and Judy Padis are even more inspired to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Padis Jewelry with the grand re-opening of Padis Jewelry Broadway Plaza, the first Padis Jewelry venture in their hometown. Padis Jewelry Broadway Plaza has been recently converted from the Padisowned Forevermark Boutique to a full Padis location showcasing natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds and fine jewelry adornment in a relaxing, non-commissioned environment. As San Francisco Bay Area’s most trusted family-owned jeweler, Padis specializes in California’s largest selection of diamonds and designers such as Tacori, Verragio, and Breitling. The Padis family offers personalized service and exceptional value and aims to exceed your expectations - each and every time you visit. You’ll never be pressured to buy or spend more than you want to. Our trusted advisors are here to help guide you to find your dream piece of jewelry. Just in time for the holidays, here are the top three gift suggestions:

even lariat styles, collecting pieces for a layered look can become a meaningful (and chic) way to commemorate cherished events, making these options all the more ideal for gifting.

Diamond Stud Earrings

Happy to Be Home to Serve You!

Diamond stud earrings are a wardrobe staple. Classic earrings are the ideal finisher for many seasonal outfits and that makes them a highly appreciated gift choice. They will take you from the gym to a job interview and never look out of place. We also have an extensive collection of lab grown stud earrings if you’d rather maximize the size for your buck!

The Stackable Band

Just as a fashion wardrobe of basics can change from day to day, so can your basic jewelry wardrobe thanks to the art of stacking and layering. For a master class in creating newness in a jewelry wardrobe full of classics, look no further than the stackable band. These petite-yet-impactful rings offer endless styling options for even the most fickle fashion chameleon. Begin with three complementary styles, and then add one or two annually to keep the look current and allow creativity to flourish. The Padis Natural and Lab Grown Eternity Collections have tons of styles to help curate your custom stack!

The Layering Necklace

Solo statement pendants will never fade from fashion’s favor—but those in the know are putting their unique twist on the look by layering multiple styles. Stacking individual pendants offers a more laid-back approach to everyday jewelry. From chunky chain links to single-stone pendants and

It’s the beautiful surroundings and wonderful sense of community that brought the Padis family to Danville as residents over 40 years ago. With four children who all attended Golden View Elementary and St. Isidore in Danville and participated in sports and activities throughout the area, the Padis Broadway Plaza store truly feels like coming home for the Padis team. Padis Jewelry Walnut Creek is located in Broadway Plaza, next door to Free People near the large fountain across from Nordstrom and Lululemon. Padis brings the same exceptional selection, value, and customer service to Walnut Creek that they have offered to their jewelry clients in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Napa Valley for many years.
