Dear Neighbors,

Blackhawk Living Magazine is celebrating a big milestone this month: our nine-year anniversary! We are thrilled and honored to have had the opportunity to serve our community with a local magazine for the past 108 months and look forward to many more.

This month we are introducing you to your neighbors, The Schonians. Dahlia and Karl are the original childhood sweethearts.

It’s about this time of year that I start to get a little cabin fever, so I’m really looking forward to Sunday, March 10th, when we get the pleasure of advancing our clocks an hour. I love having more time to walk the dog, play outside and visit with neighbors. It’s also a sign that warmer weather is on the way!

It’s been incredibly fun to share the stories of our residents over the past seven years in Blackhawk Living Magazine. Thank you for all of your support!

Warmly,

Megan Scott

Schonian Family:

The Original Childhood

Sweethearts

Karl and Dahlia Schonian take childhood sweethearts to a new level. Their adorable love story began with a childhood friendship when they were eight years old. “We attended the same church with our families in Berkeley, CA. By the age of 13, I began to admire Dahlia from afar. I knew she was the one, and after a few years, at the age of 16, I worked up the courage to ask her out. We are celebrating 34 years of marriage this month,” says Karl. Our first date was actually Thanksgiving Day 1986. Karl was so nervous, and he asked to borrow his father’s car. I had no idea that he had enlisted two of my best friends in the endeavor to help prepare him to ask me out that day. Many ask how we have had a successful marriage, and we credit this to being best friends with a foundation in our faith. It’s this foundation that helps us work through challenges throughout our relationship,” adds Dahlia.

Karl was born in San Francisco and spent his early childhood years in the San Pablo/Richmond area. Dahlia was born in New Jersey and moved to Suisun, CA at the age of six.

The Schonians have been able to combine their love of the Bay Area and real estate into a successful Real Estate and Mortgage Brokerage that they created together in 2013. Driving along highway 80 as a child, Karl always had an interest in real estate and would tell his mother how good it would be to invest in Bay Area real estate. He has been working in real estate and mortgage lending for over 25 years. Dahlia began working in technology for Pacific Bell full time while attending college, majoring in Technology Operations. “While at Pacific Bell/SBC working as an Associate Director in Product Marketing, I was asked if I would be interested in going to law school fully paid. They wanted me to be able to negotiate contractual agreements for partnerships in the product I was working at the time, which is known today as ATT/Yahoo. This is what led me to change my major, and I completed my degree in B.S. Law and Executive Juris Doctorate (JD) in Law. This led me to transition into a career in Legal and Compliance in both Technology and Health Care. I left Kaiser Permanente working as a Senior Leader in Legal and Compliance Operations and began working for myself. My husband and I established our Real Estate and Mortgage Brokerage in 2013, and I established a Legal Documentation Prep Service in 2020. It’s been so rewarding to be able to put my years of experience to use helping people,” says Dahlia. When they aren’t working, the couple enjoy a variety of hobbies and love to stay active. “We firmly believe in a healthy, active lifestyle as long as we can. I have ridden a couple of century rides (100+ miles), and have climbed many of our local mountains. I also regularly mountain bike on Mt. Diablo and in Tahoe. Living in Blackhawk provides for easy access to Diablo, which we love,” says Karl. Dahlia has ridden the Cinderella Classic twice, multiple metric century rides and is involved in a riding group with several cyclists from our church, “We love cycling, mountain

biking, hiking and hitting the gym. We enjoy vacationing in Hawaii every year for our anniversary, and we are also both musicians. Karl plays the piano and organ, and I play the flute and sing. We are very involved in church, we attend three times a week and perform in the church band. Church isn’t just church to us. Our faith is our lifestyle. We live by our Christian principles in all we do and our decisions. We also support youth and educational efforts,” says Dahlia.

Two adorable pups complete the family, an eight-year-old Maltese named Zoe and a five-year-old Cavapoo named Brooklyn.

After living in Oakland, Vallejo and San Leandro, as well as out of state in Baton Rouge, LA, Dahlia and Karl say they had admired Blackhawk since being introduced to the development as pre-teens. It was cycling trips during the pandemic that brought them to the area frequently and inspired them to make the move “We had admired Blackhawk for years and when we took up road cycling during the pandemic, we found ourselves riding in this area frequently and falling in love with it. After admiring the area for so long, we decided to make the move to this beautiful neighborhood. We literally looked for four years until we found our dream home, a single level home on Deer Hollow Drive that met all our needs and wants. We moved to Blackhawk in 2021 and enjoy how quiet and clean the neighborhood is as well as the security. The neighbors were so welcoming, and we love the diversity of our street.”

Start a Knit & Crochet Group

Starting a knit and crochet group or any other kind of craft group can be immensely beneficial. We started one in our neighborhood and we really enjoy it. One of the things I like best about it is that it is a dedicated and structured time for creative expression. In our busy lives, it’s often challenging to find time for hobbies and artistic pursuits. By scheduling regular sessions for the knit and crochet group, individuals are more likely to prioritize and dedicate time to their creative endeavors. This not only fosters a sense of accomplishment but also allows participants to explore and enhance their skills in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Being part of a knit and crochet or craft group encourages social interaction and community building. Crafting is a shared experience that brings people together, fostering a sense of camaraderie among group members. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a beginner, the group setting provides an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn new techniques, and seek advice from others with similar interests. This sense of community can contribute to improved mental well-being, as individuals connect over shared passions and form lasting friendships.

Additionally, participating in a crochet group can be a therapeutic and stress-relieving activity. The repetitive and rhythmic nature of knitting and crochet, in particular, can have a calming effect and can be relaxing. By scheduling craft sessions into your routine, you can make it a priority. If I block the time on my schedule/ calendar, then I don’t book anything over that time. In essence, a knit and crochet group provides not just a space for creativity but also a platform for personal growth, social connections, and well-being.

I hope you’ll start your own craft group. We are glad we did.

If you have any questions, you can email me at mrsbarry300@ gmail.com

Happy knitting and crocheting!

Baklava

Serves 24. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Brush the bottom of a baking pan with melted butter. Syrup (for glazing baklava):

• ½ cup sugar

• ½ cup water

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 2 tablespoons rosewater

• Baklava:

• 2 sticks unsalted butter, melted OR equal amount of ghee (clarified butter)

• 1½ pounds almond, roughly ground

• 1 cup sugar

• 1 teaspoon ground cardamom

• 1-pound thin phyllo dough (thawed according to package instructions)

• Garnish: ¼ cup crushed pistachio, unsalted

Syrup: Place the sugar and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Once it comes to high simmer, lower the heat to medium and simmer, stirring often for 6-8 minutes until sugar is dissolved and it thickens into syrup. Turn the heat off. Stir honey and rosewater into syrup. Remove saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool completely. Baklava: Place the ground almond, sugar, and cardamom in bowl of food processor. Pulse a few times to mix well.

Take the phyllo dough out of package, unroll on a clean surface and trim phyllo dough to fit your baking pan. Cover with a clean kitchen towel, so it does not dry out. Lay two sheets on bottom of baking pan. Brush dough lightly with melted butter. Evenly, spread a layer of almond mixture (press gently with the back of a spoon so almond mixture sticks to the dough). Cover almond mixture with another sheet of phyllo dough, brush dough lightly with melted butter, and another layer of almond mixture. Repeat this alternating process until you have used up almond mixture.

Using a sharp knife, cut baklava into 24 equal sized pieces (cut any pattern you desire, all the way through). Transfer into oven and bake on the middle rack of oven for 30-35 minutes. Move to the top oven rack and bake for 4 more minutes or until top is lightly golden brown (the pastry should be crisp and puffy). Remove baklava from oven. Immediately brush hot baklava with cooled syrup and pause for a few seconds (allowing enough time for baklava to absorb syrup), and then brush a second and third time. Let it cool uncovered in pan, for several hours (at least 4) at room temperature and garnish with pistachio. Enjoy.

Note 1: Be sure to gather all ingredients and prepare clarified butter and blended almond mixture before opening the phyllo dough. The phyllo dough dries quickly once it is opened.

Note 2: Gently brush the top of the baklava with cooled syrup/glaze in thin layers (if syrup is applied too fast or thickly, the syrup will make the baklava heavy and sticky.)

Note 3: After cooling you may store baklava in an airtight container for a few days (at room temperature) or one week in refrigerator or one month in freezer.

Southern Dunes –Scotland in the Desert

Aproven high-quality course, Southern Dunes Golf Club, endures the downside of being out-of-the-way, south of Phoenix. As a Troon-managed facility, Southern Dunes is very attentive to the needs of serious golfers. Great practice facilities, a well-designed clubhouse, superb attention to food and friendly employees make this a worthwhile trip.

Schmidt-Curley Design teamed with Fred Couples to develop a course more like Scotland than the desert. It’s hard to find a cactus here. The course spans 320 acres with not a single home on the course. The course has six teeing grounds and tips out at 7546 yards. Southern Dunes has hosted championship events including a PGA Tour qualifier and a US Open qualifier.

Twelve Acres of Sand

A typical course has a few acres of sand; Southern Dunes has close to twelve acres of sand. If you get frustrated playing from bunkers, then this course might not be for you. However, if you relish the chance to think your way around a course and position each shot, then you should tackle this course. The designers were true to links golf as the fairways and greens are hard and play fast. Green-side areas are shaved allowing for chipping and putting far from the green.

There is a lot of room in the fairway, many over 60 yards wide. The greens are small with numerous large bunkers strategically positioned – thanks to architect Fred Couples. When windy, this course is treacherous but fair. Water is available every three holes and marshals offer icy towels. In the early summer mornings, use the insect repellent provided by the starter.

Fairway bunkering is extensive. Expect severe bunkering around the greens. Although the sand is well prepared and the slopes are moderate, their size makes them hazardous. An excellent short Par4 is Hole #14. There is more sand than grass on this hole.

Southern Dunes is not in the most advantageous location. Visually appealing to those that like the links look, it’s a break from the classic Arizona desert golf. Rewarding golfers who play position golf, it’s long, and the plethora of bunkers are challenging. It’s difficult for the average golfer. They serve excellent food, try the meatball soup.

If You Go:

Course Info – Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club is a high-end public golf club with one golf course sprawled across 320 acres of the Ak-Chin Indian Reservation.

Location – One hour south of the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport and twenty miles from Interstate Highway 10.

Lodging – Harrah’s AK-Chin in Maricopa six miles south.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance

JUDE - EAST COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER DOG LOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HOME

Hello and nice to meet you!

I am a very good-looking, male, German Shepherd. I am approximately 9 years old and weigh around 67 lbs. I am an easy-going, laid-back kinda guy. I love going on short strolls and playing with my favorite Orange ball when I am in the yard. I wait patiently and quietly in my kennel when my volunteer friends are taking me out for walks. I also willingly and happily go back inside after my outside time is done. I walk well on the leash and am good at following your lead. I warm up to people quickly and when I spend enough time with you, I will lean on you and ask for affection. I know how to ‘Sit’ when asked to and am learning to ‘Wait’ before I get my treats. I am also very gentle when I take my treats from your hand.

Because of my mature age - I think people are overlooking me which is such a shame because I would love to go home with you. Admittedly I would do best being the only dog in my new forever home. Please come meet me at the East County Animal Shelter at 4595 Gleason Drive in Dublin. I’m neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and ready to go home WITH YOU.

I am located at the East County Animal Shelter – 4595 Gleason Drive in Dublin. I

have some pictures you can see right here (and please ignore the one of me in the Red Hat -- They made me wear it!).

You can see more about Jude and additional pictures and videos at www.tvar.org .

FOSTER KITTEN PROGRAM -MAMA ROSALIND AND HER BABIES

Rosalind is a beautiful tortoiseshell mama currently available for adoption. When she was brought into the shelter, it was quickly noticed that she was nursing and must have been missing her babies. Remarkably, the following day, shelter members found babies in the same area and reunited them with Mama Rosalind. Although it cannot be confirmed that they were her own kittens, she took them in immediately, and her demeanor changed. Tri-Valley Animal Rescue placed the happy family in a foster home, where Mama could raise her babies in a loving environment. All but three of the babies have been adopted.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - and mommas and babies like Rosalind- who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR)Giving them Another Chance.

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

Common IRS Audit Triggers for Businesses: How to Avoid Them

As a small business owner, the word ‘audit’ can be a source of anxiety. However, understanding the common triggers for an IRS audit and taking proactive steps can significantly reduce the likelihood of facing one. This article explores the factors that could lead to an IRS audit for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and provides practical tips on how to avoid them.

Discrepancies in Reported Income

One of the most common triggers for an IRS audit is discrepancies in reported income. The IRS cross-references your reported income with the 1099s and W-2s they receive from other businesses and individuals. If there’s a mismatch, it could trigger an audit. To avoid this, ensure that your reported income matches the income reported by your clients, customers, and employees.

Excessive Deductions

While it’s perfectly legal to claim legitimate business expenses, excessive or unusual deductions can raise red flags. This includes high deductions for travel, meals, entertainment, and home office expenses. To avoid suspicion, only claim deductions that are necessary and ordinary for your business, and always keep detailed records to substantiate your claims.

Large Cash Transactions

If your business deals with a lot of cash, you may be more likely to be audited. The IRS requires businesses to report cash transactions over $10,000. Failure to do so can trigger an audit. To stay compliant, make sure to report all large cash transactions and keep meticulous records.

Consistent Business Losses

If your business consistently reports losses, the IRS may question whether your business is genuinely trying to make a profit. If you’re not, your business could be classified as a hobby, and you could lose your business deductions. To avoid this, ensure your business activities are carried out in a businesslike manner with the intent to make a profit.

Late or Incomplete Filing

Filing your tax returns late or submitting incomplete or inaccurate forms can also trigger an audit. To avoid this, always file your tax returns on time and double-check your forms for accuracy before submitting them.

Avoiding an IRS audit largely comes down to good organization and timely filing. Keep accurate records of your income and expenses, file your tax returns on time, and be honest in your reporting. If you’re unsure about anything, it’s always a good idea to consult with our office.

If you need help with organization, responding to a notice, or any other aspect of your business’s finances, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office. Our team of experienced professionals is here to help you navigate the complexities of small business taxation and ensure your business stays on the right side of the IRS.

Golf can be a real head-scratcher sometimes, right? One minute you’re on top of the world, thinking you’ve mastered your swing, and the next, your ball’s taking a scenic detour into the water hazard, sand trap or barranca! But it only takes that one great shot to get you to come back for another round. But hey, that’s the charm of the game! It’s not just about birdies and pars, it’s those quirky and funny moments that make you chuckle and say, “Well, that’s golf for you!”

This time of year can be difficult to play golf but there were some dedicated Niners who braved the wet and soggy conditions on the course.

Speaking of the charm of the game, our first Charm Day of 2024 saw Helen Tarantino as

Plantar Fasciitiswhat it feels like

I get all sorts of people coming in with foot pain, complaining of “plantar fasciitis”.

Hallmark plantar fasciitis will be pain on the front side of the heel bone, feeling like a sharp pain when putting pressure on the foot, that will get better as you walk around. The #1 thing I hear with plantar fasciitis is, “The first step of the day is excruciating. I’ll hobble to go to the bathroom, but after about 5 minutes of walking around it’ll be ok. Then if I sit for an hour, it comes back.”

Why you get plantar fasciitis:

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the connective tissue between your forefoot and the heel bone (calcaneus). When the foot’s biomechanics change because of weakness in the arch, restriction of heel bone, or fixations in the metatarsals (foot bones), then there will be extra tension on this connective tissue (fascia).

What doesn’t work for plantar fasciitis

What does work for plantar fasciitis

Mobilization and strengthening: Since the extra pressure on the fascia comes from the arch collapsing and fixation of the heel bone, strengthening the arch muscles and getting the foot, heel and ankle bones gliding correctly again will normalize the pressure on the heel bone.

Rolling/stretching the arch of the foot: Tons of people try to stretch the fascia, rolling on a ball or a frozen water bottle, and while this might help loosen things up a bit, everything will likely tighten up after activity because the biomechanics of the foot will likely remain unchanged.

Try to squeeze the arch muscles without curling the toes. This is called a “short foot” exercise, because the arch will lift up and the length of the foot will shorten. Hold for 7 seconds, then release for 10 seconds, and repeat 5 times, 2-3 time per day.

Unlocking Youth: A Guide to Facial Rejuvenation Procedures

Facial rejuvenation procedures have become increasingly popular as individuals seek to restore a youthful and refreshed appearance. In this article, we explore five transformative techniques offered by Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, including short facelifts, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, laser treatments, and fat grafting.

Short facelifts, also known as mini facelifts, have gained popularity for their ability to provide noticeable results with minimal downtime. Targeting the lower two-thirds of the face, this procedure addresses sagging skin and wrinkles, delivering a rejuvenated and lifted appearance. With a quicker recovery period compared to traditional facelifts, short facelifts offer a convenient option for those seeking effective facial rejuvenation.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a transformative procedure designed to address sagging eyelids and under-eye bags. By removing excess skin, fat, and muscle, eyelid surgery opens up the eyes, creating a more alert and youthful look. Patients often experience improved vision and enhanced self-confidence following this rejuvenating surgery.

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is a versatile procedure that not only enhances aesthetic features but also corrects functional issues. By harmonizing the proportions of the nose with the rest of the face, rhinoplasty achieves facial balance and symmetry. This surgical intervention can address concerns ranging from nasal humps to breathing difficulties, offering both cosmetic and functional benefits.

Laser treatments have revolutionized the field of facial rejuvenation, providing non-invasive solutions for a variety of skin concerns. From reducing wrinkles and fine lines to improving skin texture and tone, lasers stimulate collagen production and encourage skin renewal. These procedures are often customizable, allowing us practitioners to tailor treatments to individual needs.

Fat grafting, a natural approach to facial rejuvenation, involves using a patient’s own fat to restore volume and contour specific areas of the face. Commonly applied to the cheeks, temples, and under-eye regions, fat grafting provides a long-lasting solution for addressing facial volume loss. This method not only rejuvenates the face but also enhances overall facial harmony.

As noted above, face rejuvenation procedures offer a spectrum of options for individuals looking to turn back the hands of time and enhance their natural beauty. If you are interested in learning more about any of these procedures or are interested in scheduling a complimentary consultation, please give us a call at 925-9365757. We look forward to hearing from you!

Top Ten

Wehave been very fortunate to visit over 400 wineries in Napa, Sonoma and Healdsburg. Each one is unique.

Many have asked us, What are your favorites?

At lunch one afternoon, we tried to select 10 of our favorites. That was not an easy task. We considered the wine, the experience, the passion of the winery members, and several other points. Each winery has an interesting story and is an experience.

One of our favorite visits was blending our own wine at Raymond Vineyards. Not only did we learn a lot about blending, but the

wine we made came out great and made us happy. This is another fun and ‘must-do’ wine experience. Our “McColgan Private Reserve” is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Franc.

In no special order, we would recommend visiting these 10 Wineries. Some are well known, and others are top secrets. The good news is that all of them are close to Danville. You may read in-depth details on each of these wineries on my blog at mikemccolgan.blogspot.com.

Italian Supercars in the Spotlight

Members of a Ferrari owners club brought some of their powerful and sleek models to display at the Blackhawk Plaza on January 13. On hand were a California T, which has a top speed of 196 mph; a 2023 Roma, the V8 touring sedan, and an F430 convertible. The F430 was produced from 2004 until 2009, and was created as a successor to the Ferrari 360. Ferraris may be a familiar sight in Blackhawk and Danville, but it’s rare to see them in a group, where you can compare the models to each other.

“Marry Me March” with Padis Jewelry featuring Tacori is Here!

Throughout the month of March, Padis is hosting a huge Engagement Ring and Wedding Band Fest with exclusive savings and special events featuring Tacori on March 1st through 3rd and experts on hand to help you select that perfect ring. If you’re on the hunt for a ring or wanting to find ideas for when you are ready for a ring, there is no better time to visit Padis Jewelry!

In honor of “Marry Me March,” we offer insight into how to find the ring to leave them speechless! Choosing an engagement ring is not a decision to be taken lightly. The cost and the meaning carry significant weight, and it can be a lot of pressure trying to pick out a ring that they’ll love forever. Here are some strategies for picking out an engagement ring that will leave them speechless…in a good way.

Do Your Research

Even if you think you could pick out what they like, doing a little bit of research will help ensure you make the right choice. Be observant of what their personal style says about them. Try to think of a few words that would use to describe your significant other. Are they Classic? Traditional? Are they always up on the latest Instagram trends? This type of information will be helpful when you’re working with one of our non-commissioned, trusted advisors at Padis.

Some other ways to get to know their style on a deeper level include:

• Ask friends or family members for recommendations

• Find out what kind of ring their favorite celebrity wears

• Consider “hints” that they’ve given you

• Notice whether they prefer yellow gold, rose gold or silvercolored jewelry

• Learn about diamond quality, settings, and the Four Cs

Shop In-Person - Not Just Online

It’s intuitive to simply browse online for an engagement ring. After all, shopping online is how many of us buy clothes, household items, and even groceries. We do encourage you to do some preliminary browsing online. But when it comes to buying a diamond, it’s just too risky. You can’t rely on the photos, descriptions or even videos, as they can be misleading. You can’t see how it sparkles and reflects natural light. Most importantly, you can’t hold, feel, inspect and compare different diamonds with an experienced jeweler at your side to explain what to look for.

At Padis Jewelry, we hand pick every diamond in our inventory. We’ve been doing it for more than 50 years, and as trained geologists, we’ve never bought a diamond online. Neither should you. If you’re convinced you’ll get a better deal online, know this: Padis Jewelry offers better than internet prices coupled with white-glove service. On average, we’re able to beat market prices on both natural and labgrown diamonds by 20%.

We own our inventory and have our master jewelers on premise every day, so you get to take home your purchase that day. The hurdle of seeing a photo of something online and then seeing it in person once it’s delivered can be a tough jump for many people who end up disappointed with the quality of the diamond or the style of ring they receive. When you shop in-person, you’re able to ask questions about and compare side by side the color, cut, and clarity. An in-person buying experience gives you the trust and confidence you should have when making such a significant purchase.

Lean on a Diamond Expert for Guidance

What’s great about a non-commissioned advisor is that you could potentially walk into one of our showrooms without any idea what to purchase and walk out with a solid plan, full diamond education or even a ring in hand. Many people put up a wall when they shop for engagement rings and fine jewelry because they think the advisor is only trying to make a sale. As members of the American Gem Society, Padis Jewelry is of the top 5% of jewelers across the country and committed to consumer protection and annual continuing gemological education to ensure you have an expert to work with. Working closely with a diamond consultant is to your benefit. With years and even decades of knowledge, our staff is there to educate and guide you.

Visit Padis Jewelry in San Francisco, Napa or Walnut Creek!

Our team at Padis Jewelry is here to help guide you in selecting a ring that matches your style and lifestyle. Join us for the Tacori March special event on the 1st through the 3rd and benefit from the entire collection to view and throughout the month of March as we feature expanded designer collections and the Bay Area’s largest and finest selection of loose natural and lab created diamonds and rings.

You can RSVP to our Marry Me March events by contacting us at concierge@padisjewelry.com or 415-861-5388. We treasure the generations of families who allow us to become a part of their most precious moments. Mention that you saw us in Blackhawk Living Magazine and receive a special jewelry gift as one of our neighbors!
