A

police officer and a 911 dispatcher as husband and wife could be the plot of a romantic comedy, but for Omar and Shannon Ashford, it’s everyday life—at least it was until Omar recently retired after a 30-year career in the police force. Omar and Shannon met at a mutual friend’s home when they were in their early twenties. They were both in other relationships at the time and didn’t end up dating until many years later, when their paths crossed and they were both single. “We reconnected 12 years ago and haven’t been apart since. We got engaged at Vic Stewart’s in Walnut Creek and were married on October 11th, 2014. Our reception was held at the Blackhawk Country Club, where we were surrounded by 200 members of our family and closest friends,” says Shannon. The couple were both born and raised in Oakland. Omar graduated from Oakland High School, and Shannon from Bishop O’Dowd High School. Shannon moved to Blackhawk with her parents in 1987 and always wanted to return to the area with her own family. The police force attracted Omar from a young age. While in high school, he volunteered as a police explorer with the city of Oakland. After graduation, the Oakland Police Department hired Omar as a police cadet while he attended Merritt College in Oakland. He rose through the ranks, was promoted to lieutenant, and served the city for 30 years. As of last August, he officially retired. Shannon graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1995. “After college, I began a career in the mortgage business, and in 2007, after the mortgage crisis, I found myself back in the job market. At that time, my mother stumbled across an article about a shortage of 911 dispatchers. She thought that I had the disposition for the job, so I applied, and the Berkeley Police and Fire Department hired me. For the last 15 years, I worked as a public safety dispatcher, and earlier this year, I transitioned to 311 with the City of Berkeley to spend more time with my family and raise our 8-year-old daughter,” says Shannon.

Omar and Shannon’s 8-year-old daughter, Giuliana, attends St. Isidore School and is currently in the third grade. The family also attends church at St. Isidore’s. “Giuliana has been dancing at Next Step since the age of three and has played a couple of seasons with Mustang Soccer. This year, she is looking forward to playing CYO basketball with the St. Isidore’s girls team,” says Omar. Two adult sons complete the family. Twenty-five-yearold Kaelan is a graduate of Morehouse College. He works as a creative strategist for Major League Baseball in Manhattan, New York. Twenty-two-year-old Bryce is in the Air Force and stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. Lastly, as seen on the cover of the magazine, Sugar, a beautiful, fun-sized 3-year-old Malti-Poo brings loads of joy to the household. Giving back to the community is a top priority for the Ashford family. Shannon is a member of the Contra Costa County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, which is a philanthropic African American mothers organization. With Omar’s recent retirement, he has enjoyed taking advantage of the Blackhawk Country Club’s amenities. “I enjoy working out at the gym at the Sports Complex early in the morning, and after a reintroduction to tennis from staff at the Sports Complex, I’m brushing up on my physical skills, and I am looking forward to getting out there for fun and exercise. I’m also a die-hard Raider’s football fan and enjoy watching other sports as well,” says Omar. Giuliana and Shannon also enjoy the club activities. “Our daughter participates in summer camp and takes swimming, tennis, and golf lessons at the club.

8

JANUARY 2024

I have recently joined Blackhawk Women’s Group and look forward to making connections with the women in the organization,” says Shannon. Traveling is a favorite pastime, and the Ashfords enjoy visiting Mexico and Hawaii, but lately, with an 8-year-old adding to the travel decisions, the destination of choice has been Disneyland. No matter where they visit, Omar and Shannon say they are always happy to come home to Blackhawk. “We live in the main gate on Quail Run Dr. and have lived there for nine years. After spending my high school and college years at home in Blackhawk, I knew that this was where I wanted to live, and it had always been one of my future goals. We love the safety aspect and quietness of our neighborhood, and we feel blessed to be able to live in such a beautiful neighborhood, and we absolutely love it.” Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? New Year and New Beauty Membership Plan By Stephen J. Ronan MD FACS

A

t Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we recognize the challenges of maintaining beauty goals and regimens, which is why we decided to provide customized Beauty Membership plans. A few months ago, we launched a new membership plan powered by PRIVI. This new plan offers numerous advantages, including discounted pricing for MedSpa services and products, convenient monthly payment options, and priority scheduling. Achieving and maintaining your beauty goals is akin to maintaining an athletic club membership; both require usage and consistency. Just as a healthy and active lifestyle is essential for maintaining an ideal body weight and shape, aesthetics demand a regular commitment for optimal results. Our new PRIVI Beauty Membership plan offers a straightforward, affordable solution to establish and sustain a consistent appointment schedule for various skin care and cosmetic treatments, such as HydraFacials, dermal fillers, “tox” injections, laser treatments, and other non-surgical procedures. For HydraFacials, we utilize a patented device that provides exfoliation, cleansing, extraction, and hydration to the face. Sun exposure, pollution, and stress can harm skin cells, hindering the production of collagen and elastin—the crucial components for healthy, radiant, and youthful-looking skin. HydraFacial treatments work by exfoliating damaged cells, hydrating tissues, and cleansing with antioxidants. Peptides and hyaluronic acid are then applied to revitalize and protect the skin, promoting collagen and elastin production. Not only are HydraFacials effective, but they also provide a soothing and relaxing experience with instant results. Dermal fillers, administered through injections, are a popular non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment. They are designed to reduce lines, creases, and areas that appear “sunken-in.” Dermal fillers work by restoring volume to areas that have lost it, resulting in a smoother, more youthful, and enhanced appearance. Beyond addressing volume loss, fillers can also be used to augment and enhance lips, cheekbones, or the chin.

Botox, Dysport and Daxxify are three different “tox” injectables we offer to address wrinkles associated with frown lines, forehead furrows, and crow’s feet caused by muscle action. Both Botox, Dysport and Daxxify are simple proteins that are injected into a muscle to create weakness. By precisely and temporarily weakening these muscles, we can soften expressions and reduce or eliminate wrinkles and frown lines. If you want to learn more about our new PRIVI Beauty Membership plan or how HydraFacial, dermal fillers, and “tox” injectables can enhance your appearance, please contact our office at 925.736.5757. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you look your best in this new year!

Cars and Coffee

Gearheads Gather, Despite the Cold By Celeste Altus

A

s the weather cools down in late fall, rain and fog make it harder to find car shows around the East Bay. But when the sun does make an appearance, some Danville classic car owners still get together on occasional weekdays in the Livery, downtown. There you can find drivers with a big variety of restored cars and trucks, from the 1920s to the 1980s as well as modern sports cars and custom builds. A recent foggy Friday morning had car owners gathered in the 39-degree chill to see a late 1960s Ford Mustang Fastback, a rare Ford Ranchero, a Chevy Chevelle SS and several more. No convertibles were on hand, as expected, but there were still some stunning restorations to see.

Monte Vista High School: FASU Family By Dylan Reyes, Sophomore at Monte Vista High School

W

hat does it mean to be Filipino? When I think about how to best describe Filipino culture, I struggle to find one word that truly embodies what Filipinos stand for. Words like vibrance, hospitality, family, generosity, and sacrifice come to mind. But words alone cannot even begin to encapsulate my culture. For me, Filipino culture is going to my Grandma’s house on the weekend and being bombarded by mountains of authentic Filipino dishes: chicken adobo (a Filipino fan favorite), dinuguan (pork stew), arroz caldo (rice porridge), and of course, lumpia (Filipino fried eggroll). Filipino culture is my selfless grandmother, who voluntarily shovels all of her food onto my plate the minute that she realizes it’s empty. Filipino culture is going to family parties and not even being able to recognize half of the people there. But even if this is the case, Filipino culture is greeting these random strangers that you’ve never met, and treating them like family. At Monte Vista High School, I established the first-ever Filipino American Student Union (FASU) to share the warmth and beauty of Filipino culture with my peers, create a safe space for all students of Filipino descent, and to serve underprivileged communities. Even though our club is still relatively young, we have already made tremendous progress in accomplishing our visions and goals. Last school year, we participated in several cultural fairs both at the school and local town level. These cultural fairs gave us the opportunity to fully showcase Filipino culture, educating attendees about Filipino traditions, cuisine, celebrities, dialects, and the geography of the Philippines. However, perhaps the crown jewel of our achievements from last school year was our inaugural FASU Career Day. At this event, we invited successful Filipino entrepreneurs, physicians, and attorneys to provide

mentorship and advice to club members. By informing us about the dedication, sacrifice, and effort that it took to succeed in their respective fields, these Filipino professionals encouraged club members to begin thinking about potential career pathways. By dedicating our time to this rewarding project, our club guaranteed that 9,720 mouths will be fed. Currently, we are in the process of shipping these meals to the Philippines. However, until we raise enough funds to cover the cost of shipping, these meals must be stored. Our club has created a fundraising page in order to help finance the cost of shipping. Since the start of the school year, most club members would agree that our proudest achievement was the opportunity to complete a winter service project with Kids Against Hunger in Pleasanton, CA. At this packing event, our team packed nearly 10,000 meals (9,720 to be exact), all of

At this joint social event, we met new people, played games, and enjoyed a magnificent feast.

Sam’s Grill:

San Francisco Classic By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

R

ecently, we had the pleasure of enjoying a great meal at Sam’s Grill. It is a ‘mustdo’ San Francisco Classic that was founded in 1867. It is also the 5th oldest restaurant in the United States. It was founded by Michael Bolan Moraghan, a native of Ireland. Moraghan was an oyster man who raised oysters in southern San Francisco Bay. His oyster beds produced over 2.5 million pounds of oyster meat a year and have always been on Sam’s menu. Sam Zenovich bought the restaurant in 1922. Frank Sepur bought Sam’s in 1937, after Sam died. Sam’s moved to its current location in 1946 and was run by the Sepur family for three generations. In 2014, Peter Quataroli and a group of Sam’s patrons bought the restaurant. There is a variety of wine, beer, and mixed drinks served by knowledgeable waiters dressed in black tuxedos. We especially enjoyed perfect Manhattans, oysters, sour dough bread, baked French onion soup, and mesquite-grilled petrale.

It is open Monday through Friday from 11 to 8 and closed on weekends. For more information and to make a reservation, go to: https://samsgrill-sf.com/

Message from the Police Chief

Clothing Drive and Drug Take Back a huge success in Blackhawk!

By Lieutenant Jeff Schultz, Chief of Police, Blackhawk Police Services

O

n November 9th Blackhawk Police Services hosted a clothing drive for local charities and the community’s participation was overwhelming. The outpour of support and generosity resulted in approximately 4,000 pounds of clothing donated to Contra Costa Health Services and The Bay Church. Both recipients support several shelters throughout the county, providing clothing for the less fortunate. Your Blackhawk Police staff and all police volunteers loaded 5 truckloads of clothing by the event’s conclusion. Both Contra Costa Health Services and The Bay Church were extremely grateful for Blackhawk’s support and wished to express their gratitude. The generosity of this great community led to the charities ability to clothe an abundant amount of those in need this holiday season.

In addition to the clothing drive, Blackhawk Police participated in the 25th DEA – Prescription Drug Take Back, which took place on October 28th. Much like the clothing drive, the participation by residents in this event was staggering. 160 pounds of medication was collected for disposal, shattering our previous collection total of just over 50 pounds. To put into perspective just how impressive this turnout was you just must look at the total pounds collected collaboratively throughout the Sheriff’s Department. All four Sheriff’s Department substations, (Valley, Bay, Muir, Delta) as well as the contract cities of Danville and Lafayette, collected 153 pounds combined. As your Police Chief, I would like to thank this community for its participation, support, and generosity. The compassion for those in need and the desire to keep our environment safe and clean should be recognized!

Terri Waterman moved to Blackhawk in 1987 and joined Blackhawk Country Club in 1990. She started playing tennis during the summer when her kids were at swim team. In 2018, she joined the Birdie group after retiring and became hooked on golf and soon after joined the Niners. Terri said “how hard could golf be? That little ball has been my friend and my enemy.” She now plays 4 days a week when she isn’t busy with her grandchildren, ages 12 & 9 (both golfers!) and 4 & 2. All her hard work has paid off because she is the 2023 Niners Triple Crown winner. Congratulations! Brenda McNabb joined Blackhawk in 1989. She and her husband lived in Alamo and belonged to Round Hill CC but decided

to make the move to Blackhawk when the Falls course opened with the appeal of two courses. Brenda then joined the 18-hole group but did not play much because she and her husband were gone much of the time and wanted to spend as much time as possible with the grandkids. They moved back to Plano, Texas for 2 years and then back to Danville and have been here since. They had a home in LaQuinta PGA West where they spent 11 winters but are now full-time here and full time grandparents. She joined the Niners about 4 years ago. The 5 grandkids are older now, two graduated from college recently, and the others are 18, 15 & 12. Congratulations Brenda, the 2023 Overall Charm Day winner!

Hi - my name is Pompano. The shelter volunteers say that I’m an easy-going dog. I’m a handsome brown and black Shepherd mix around five years old with ears that sometimes slightly flop over. I currently weigh 81 pounds. The volunteers appreciate how patient I am when they come to take me in or out of my cage. I also sit politely for treats and take them gently. I know basic commands like ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘shake’.

With quick intervention, TVAR was able to have him seen by the veterinarian, where it was determined he had a bacterial infection in his gastrointestinal tract. Choomba was given antibiotics and supportive care in his foster home and quickly recovered and began to grow and thrive once again. Helping kittens like Choomba is made possible by TVAR’s compassionate fosters and donors. Life through a Lens

Chasing the Sunrise By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

T

he morning sunrise fills my heart with joy, optimism, and hope; awakens and energizes my mind and body; and gives a positive kick to my day (better than coffee or tea). Waking up before the sun and watching it rise is incredibly fulfilling, tranquil, and gorgeous. A New Year’s Day sunrise is even more rewarding, where some precious and beautiful moments are only meant for the lucky few like me, once I have managed the hard task of rolling out of bed. The beautiful cloudy skies lit by the magnificence of the sun and its color play are truly a divine sight to behold! I have been fortunate enough to chase the sunrise more than once while living in Blackhawk, the place I love to call home. I have been quite motivated to catch the rising sun in all its morning glory several times whenever I travel. The early morning surging waves in Cabo, Mexico, did not dampen my adventurous spirit when they sneaked up behind me while I was hiding behind the rock, though they drowned me and my camera to the core. Oops! That was definitely a “wide awakening.”. So here’s wishing my readers a Happy New Year 2024, filled with 365 days of fun, adventure, and beautiful beginnings while chasing the vibrant, inspiring colors of sunrise and more! Sonia Lamba As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

Ring in the New Year with a New Ring Look as Tacori has come to Padis Broadway Plaza! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry

H

appy New Year from our family to yours! This is the perfect time to kick off the New Year by refreshing the ring you wear and enjoy daily. Resetting your diamond is a great way to get a whole new look. Whether you have a pear-shape, marquise, or a classic round brilliant diamond, we at Padis Jewelry can show you the most current on-trend styles that you will be sure to love. We are thrilled to bring to Walnut Creek the Bay Area’s largest selection, and top designer brands such as Tacori and Verragio. There are endless reasons as to why you would want to re-set your center diamond into a new mounting. Tired of your old setting, not happy with the quality of the ring, the ring was not a design you truly wanted, or you perhaps fell head over heels with a design you saw on Padis Jewelry’s Instagram account? We’re here to help! When updating a ring or remounting your center diamond, there is always the question: well what can I do with my old mounting (setting)?! There are a number of different options, some naturally more cost-effective than others. The first option is to keep it! Some of us like to plan ahead and think in terms of taking care of those we love, so keeping your old mounting to make a gift for a loved one, or helping your soon to be son-in-law marry your daughter, is one sentimental option. You can set a complimentary cubic zirconia in it and keep it as a travel ring for vacations, or even a lab created diamond, which is a cost-effective way to still have all of the benefits of a diamond in your ring. The next option is to have it set with a colored gemstone. Sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts can turn your old mounting into a beautiful, colored-stone ring. This will allow you to keep your ring, which may hold sentimental value, and wear it as an alternative to your new engagement ring. Remember, no matter the shape of your diamond, it can be remounted into a beautiful new setting. It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Padis Jewelry can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options. Still love your ring the way it is? That’s a great feeling! Stop by for a complimentary cleaning service. You’d be surprised at what it can do. Whatever you choose, your rings should always be a reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any way. Our new Padis Jewelry location at Broadway Plaza is a great place to begin your “perfect ring” journey. Redesigning your engagement ring for the New Year is a meaningful and exciting endeavor that allows you to celebrate the growth of your relationship and the promise of a shared future. We look forward to helping you commemorate your most precious moments. Please visit us at our locations in Walnut Creek, Napa or San Francisco or shop with us 24/7 at www.padisjewelry.com. We wish you a very happy 2024! 34
