Meet the Cosbey Family: Music, Faith and Fun

I

n September of 2008, a choir assembled for the dedication of the new Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland after the old cathedral was destroyed by the Loma Prieta Earthquake.

In the choir was a tenor named Keith and a soprano named Christine. Little did they know, the two would continue making music together for many years to come. Christine says she noticed Keith right away, “I noticed him the first time he came to rehearsal but we never connected during rehearsals.” After the cathedral dedication performance in November, Christine needed a ride home, and Keith was happy to offer. That ride home turned into grabbing some dinner, which turned into Christine and Keith falling for each other and creating a life together. The couple were married in 2011 at Saint Mary’s College and four choirs sang at the ceremony.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, Keith attended the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, and sang in the Glee Club while there. Travels with the Glee Club brought him to St. Isidore in Danville, and he knew he wanted to call Danville home one day. After working at Accenture in Chicago, in 2003 he co-founded Choicelunch and moved to Danville. “We grew from eight schools in 2003, to over 300 schools throughout Northern and Southern California, operating in 12 California counties,” says Keith. During the pandemic, schools closed, but Choicelunch kept busy by feeding 300,000 homeless meals (and counting), supplying over 100,000 families in need (and counting) with a weekly box of grocery staples and provided drive-through groceries to over 10,000 families throughout five Northern California locations (including downtown Danville).

Eventually the family found their way to Blackhawk in 2018. “We were looking for something with a little more space and Blackhawk was always one of the neighborhoods on my short list,” says Keith. “Keith drove me through over 10 different neighborhoods throughout Danville and Alamo. When we drove through Blackhawk, I was stunned by the beauty of nature in every direction. I could envision our kids walking or biking to the park and enjoying all that the neighborhood has to offer. Everyday I find myself admiring the beautiful mature trees… even if just for a minute, and I feel so incredibly blessed to be living in such a picturesque community,” adds Christine.

Christine grew up in Moraga, and graduated from St. Mary’s College (SMC) of Moraga with a major in vocal performance and a minor in psychology. “After completing my undergraduate education, I then attended the Kalmanovitz School of Education at SMC and graduated from the multiple subject teaching credential program.” says Christine. She began working as a teacher aide at St. Theresa Catholic School in Oakland before having her own 4th grade class at St. Jerome Catholic School in El Cerrito. After having three kids, Christine stayed home to take care of them, but continues to minister by singing for funerals and weddings throughout the Bay Area. “My work as a music minister is unique because what I get to share comes from my truest self, deep down in my core. Being a music minister is not just a choice. It’s a necessity for myself as the person I was made to be on this earth. When I sing, I am able to share joy and I’m able to help others pray. Music can take our minds and souls beyond the place that only only words can take us,” says Christine.

Three children complete the Cosbey family: seven-year-old Christopher, five-year-old Olivia and three-year-old Nicholas. Christopher is a 2nd grader at St. Isidore, and Olivia has started TK at St. Isidore. They both enjoy karate, and Christine says they are drawn to music. “Christopher began piano lessons when he was five years old, while Olivia wants to start with a ukulele.

Nicholas is always bouncing and swaying his body when he hears upbeat music, banging on the hand drum and tinkering on the piano, so he is definitely showing interest in music too.” Christopher’s favorite school subjects are math, reading, art and music while Olivia loves arts and crafts, music and books.

Giving back to the community is important to the Cosbey family, and they have done that through music and faith. “I volunteered as a high school music director for many years at St. Joan of Arc Church,” says Keith, “and since 2010 I’ve been a board member for Family Aid Catholic Education, which helps raise money for tuition assistance for children attending Catholic schools within the Diocese of Oakland that otherwise don’t have the financial means to attend. As a product of Catholic education my entire life, I knew there were programs out there to support these students, and I wanted to become a part of it.”

Christine has regularly cantored Mass at St Isidore in Danville as well as St. Monica in Moraga. “Music enhances the mass experience, and I enjoy using my musicianship and voice to be a part of that. I believe that everyone is blessed with a unique gift, and I strongly believe that it is upon us to share that gift with others to spread joy and love. I have volunteered at St. Isidore’s Faith Camp for the past few years, and it’s JANUARY 2021

truly a joy to spend time teaching children about God through activities and music. I loved being a Catholic school teacher, and this has been a good way to get my teaching fix while giving a small amount of my time to serve,” says Christine.

Cooking with her kids is another favorite pastime of Christine’s. “Along with singing, I love cooking creatively for my family and getting my kids involved in the fun. I also enjoy baking, arts and crafts, knitting, yoga, and training our dog,” says Christine.

Izzy is the family dog. Named after St. Isidore, she is a pure-bred, one-year-old German Shepherd who loves walking around the neighborhood and play time at the dog park. “Izzy has brought our kids immense joy. She is the sweetest puppy with the best temperament. She is my absolute dream dog. When we brought Izzy into our family, it was only natural for me to train her to be a Therapy Dog and volunteer with her in the future. Izzy passed her Canine Good Citizen test in October,” says Christine.

The Cosbey family say they appreciate the beauty of Blackhawk every day, “We love the peaceful walks in our neighborhood. The kids love to ride their scooters and bikes around, and they refer to the Falls Pond as “The Lake.” Every neighbor we have met has been so kind, and we feel very blessed to live next to such wonderful people.”

Abandoned Cat Finds Forever Home

C

ats are domestic animals; they need humans to survive.

On Saturday, October 17, the doctors and staff at Tassajara Veterinary Clinic were startled to get a call from a good Samaritan: she had rescued at cat who had been tossed from a car on a lonely country road the night before.

Naturally we told her to bring the kitty right down. She arrived covered with dirt and with her hair full of leaves, having had quite a struggle both finding and then getting to the cat to pick him up.

The cat was a neutered male, young but quite thin and very dirty, as though he had been neglected for weeks or months before being abandoned. One of his upper fangs was broken off, a common injury when a cat falls and lands hard enough for his chin to hit the ground.

He had multiple wounds on his head, some of which were matted with freshly dried blood and dead leaves. He had blood in one ear canal.

The poor little guy was in tough shape indeed.

Dr. Elisa Dowd and her veterinary technicians immediately set to work, gently cleaning his wounds and starting him on antibiotics and medicine for pain. They ran some lab tests and found he had mild kidney insufficiency but no serious viral infections. They gave him fluids to combat dehydration and support his kidneys, then settled him

into an extra-large cage lined with soft blankets and in a quiet part of the clinic. Within a few hours he was purring and eating special canned cat food for ill or injured cats.

Because animal abandonment is a crime, this poor kitty was considered evidence. Two days after his arrival at Tassajara Veterinary Clinic, Contra Costa Animal Services sent an officer to take him to the shelter for evaluation.

Blessedly, the good Samaritan who had originally rescued the cat kept in touch with them and was allowed to retrieve him after a few days.

She returned him to Tassajara Veterinary Clinic to continue with his recovery until someone could adopt him.

This catâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plight had been shared extensively on Next Door. People in Blackhawk pitched in money to help pay for his care and many offered to foster him. The wonderful woman who rescued him has since been able to find him a new, forever, home.

This kittyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ordeal began when his humans failed him. Fortunately, when his plight became known, more people stepped up and came together to save him.

on the TV after work, find an intriguing book series and get lost in the adventure. If you feel ambitious, why not write your own book while you’re at it?

Options for Removing Unwanted Fat

Salmon with

Arugula Spicy Salad

Ambwani, Resident since 1983 Serves 4 Salmon: • 2 pounds salmon steak, skinned, boned, cleaned, pat dry, marinate, cut into 4 servings (please see note 1) Arugula Spicy Salad: 3 cups baby arugula leaves 1 celery stalk, diced 2 carrots, peeled, diced ¼ cup red bell pepper, peeled, diced 1 cup cucumber, peeled diced 2 teaspoons basil leaves, chopped 2 teaspoons sweet jalapeno pepper, chopped 2 bulbs scallions and 2 cloves garlic, chopped 4 red cherry tomatoes, cut each in half Salad Dressing: 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice 2 teaspoons rice vinegar ¼ teaspoon sea salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground Garnish: A few basil sprigs and sliced tomatoes Place all spicy arugula salad ingredients except cherry tomatoes (arugula, celery, carrots, bell pepper, cucumber, basil, jalapeno, scallions, and garlic) in food processor and pulse 3-4 times. Place mixture in salad bowl and add cherry tomatoes.

In a small mixing bowl combine olive oil, lime juice, rice vinegar, salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle over salads ingredients and toss together. Place salad on individual serving plates, top with grilled salmon and garnish with basil and sliced tomato.

Note 1: How to Marinate Salmon: In a small mixing bowl add (2 teaspoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons lemon juice,

1 teaspoon lemon zest, ¼ teaspoon of each following ground seasoning: tarragon, oregano, thyme, fennel, dried onion and garlic, and saffron, 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper, ¼ teaspoon salt and 1 dash ground black pepper. Marinate salmon and grill or pan-fry each side, for 3-4 minutes or until done.

Note 2: It is better to prepare “Arugula Spicy Salad” ahead of time and refrigerate for a few hours, so the flavors are blended prior to serving.

hat should you keep in your car in case of a minor (or major) emergency? With technology almost always at our fingertips and a gas station (seemingly) on every corner, we could forget to prepare for those times when we find ourselves in an area with no cellular signal or nearby gas station.

Here are 10 items to keep in your vehicle that could offer safety and peace of mind!

1. BLANKET – Even in warmer temps, a blanket could be used to help treat shock (or just for comfortable positioning).

2. BOOTS & SOCKS – We often travel in footwear not

designed for trekking. If you need to seek assistance on

foot, it’s wise to keep a supportive pair of shoes in the car. (However, please note that it’s best to stay with your vehicle whenever possible.)

3. FIRST-AID KIT – A good first-aid kit includes the essentials and disposable gloves, which serve as a protective barrier when helping others.

4. FLASHLIGHT – The flashlight on your cell phone might

not be bright enough (and could quickly drain its battery).

If you have a rechargeable flashlight, remember to keep it charged. If not, make sure the batteries haven’t expired.

5. JUMPER CABLES – You never know when you (or

another driver) will need a jumpstart. In either scenario, keeping your own cables on hand is the best bet – rather than waiting for roadside assistance.

6. PORTABLE POWER BANK – Keep this device fully

charged. You can use it to charge your phone if you lose the capability to charge from your car (or if you have to leave your vehicle).

7. ROAD ATLAS – When there’s no cellular service, you can still count on a good ol’ paper map for navigation.

8. TIRE PRESSURE GAUGE – If your vehicle doesn’t

digitally display tire pressures (or if that system malfunctions) this compact and handy tool will tell you whether your tires need more air.

9. WATER & SNACKS – Storing one or more bottles

of drinking water in the car is a must. When traveling in cooler climates, keep the water in your car’s passenger section to keep it from freezing. Also, metal containers are the best option. (Plastics can leach chemicals over time and at extreme temperatures. And glass is prone to breaking.) Remember to replace your water supply regularly and not let it sit.

10. WIPER FLUID – Certain weather and road conditions use up more wiper fluid than others (due to dust, sand, mud, salt, ice, etc.). By keeping a reserve container of wiper fluid, you can easily restore visibility – no matter what you encounter. (For cooler climates, choose wiper fluid that contains antifreeze.)

Happy New Year Crafting

t’s the new year! Happy New Year to everyone! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season. We had a lot of Zoom Celebrations over the holidays. I really miss hugging people, being able to travel freely and large family gatherings.

Hopefully, we can get back to some normalcy in this new year. Fingers crossed!

Since the weather has gotten colder, I have started making hats and scarves both by crocheting and knitting. I tried knitting (see the grey scarf below)! The videos on the internet, explaining how to make these crafts are endless. Three months ago I didn’t know how to crochet or knit. That is how good these tutorials are.

Here are a few examples of items I’ve made. I hope you are inspired to try crocheting and knitting. There’s something satisfying about it. I can’t explain it.

Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Tips

s we don’t have sidewalks in Blackhawk, many of our children and our adults ride their bicycles in our streets. We would like to remind everyone of a few bicycle and pedestrian safety tips.

Drivers are reminded to be on the lookout for bicycle riders.

Cyclists are reminded: • • • • • • •

Be sure to wear reflective, bright clothing, especially if riding at night.

Lights are also required on all bicycles for night driving.

Helmets are required by law.

Ride on the same side of the street as the vehicles going in your direction.

Bicycles are required to obey the same rules as vehicles.

Look both ways before crossing any streets.

Don’t block roadways.

We also see many pedestrians take to our streets. Adults tend to enjoy long walks through our tree-lined neighborhoods.

Children seem to move about from place to place or play games on quieter streets.

Drivers, please keep an eye out for all pedestrians.

Pedestrians, please keep an eye out for all vehicles.

It is always a good idea to stop, look, and listen before entering and crossing the street.

Top Tips for Fool-proof Veggie Grilling

I Neighbors, Along with being your Blackhawk Living CA Content Coordinator for the past 6 years, I also own a plant-based meal delivery service, Planted Table.

During this time of sheltering in place during COVID 19, I have been trying to find comfort in simple activities at home, like grilling up some amazing veggies.

We recently had a weekend of beautiful sunshine and it inspired me to fire up our grill. I love the flavor of the smokey grill.

A glass of wine and a good playlist help to make me forget the craziness of the times we are in.

My Grilling Must-Haves: Wood Chips and Smoker Box

I love cooking with wood chips, it is optional but adds wonderful flavor to your food, especially when using a propane grill. Place dry wood chips into mini smoker box and once grill gets hot enough your smoke chips will start to ignite.

Pro Tip: Keep the lid closed during cooking so smoke stays contained as much as possible to the food and only lift lid while flipping food. Long tongs

are helpful to keep hands protected while working with a high heat grill.

Grilling Platter Technique

Heat up grill to medium heat. While you are waiting for your grill to heat, rinse vegetables and shake to dry.

Lay vegetables onto a large sheet tray, this makes for easy clean up. Keep the vegetables large so you can easily flip onto

grates. You can cut them up if needed after cooking.

My Favorite Grilling Marinade

Mix a grilling marinade of your choice. My go-to is a combination of high-quality extra virgin olive oil, Spanish-smoked paprika, freshly minced parsley, salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Grilling Rub Recipe

1/2 cup evoo 1 tablespoon of smoked paprika 1/2 cup minced parsley 1 tablespoon of garlic powder salt and pepper to taste Stir marinade and pour over your vegetables onto the sheet tray. Rub to cover all vegetables.

Estimated Time for Cooking:

Baby Yukon Gold Potatoes: 12- 15 minutes Cipollini Onions: 12 minutes Portobello Mushrooms: 12 minutes Baby Bell Peppers: 6-8 minutes Asparagus: 4-6 minutes If you have a flair up or something really sticking to the grill, I use my tongs and squeeze juice out of the citrus to add flavor and liquid to help stop burning. I also use the orange to dip into the marinade and then coat the food on the grill in place of using a brush.

Imagine a Community Without Frantic Families

arents are the CEOs of their families, and families are more important than companies. Yes, I am confident that both of those statements are true. And so, it stands to reason that parents should go about planning and organizing their home life with at least as much strategic clarity as a CEO runs his or her business.

Unfortunately, most of them don’t. I certainly didn’t. And the cost of this is greater than we know, for our families, our children, our marriages, and even our communities.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. Imagine you, your family, and your community, being calmer, more intentional and more peaceful. Imagine not having to worry about whether your son makes the travel squad of the underwater lacrosse team, or whether your daughter takes advanced placement astrophysics during her junior year of high school, or whether you should have bought that lake house while interest rates were low like your neighbors did.

Theodore Roosevelt once said that “comparison is the thief of joy,” and it is so easy for parents and families to lose their joy when they are tempted to compare their lives to the people next door, down the street or in the next pew over at church. The key to avoiding this is to get clear—really clear—about who you are and what matters most to you, and then making decisions with confidence, knowing that you’re living true to yourselves regardless of what others are doing. That is the purpose of my book, The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family.

I discovered the model for the book years ago. By day I was, and still am, a consultant to CEOs. By night I’m a husband and father. One evening I came home, and innocuously said to Laura, my wife: “If

my clients ran their companies the way we run this family, they’d go out of business.” Feeling like I was criticizing her, Laura objected, and I reminded her that it was as much my fault as hers. In fact, I was more at fault because I spent my days helping others create clarity and strategy, and I did virtually nothing in that area at home. So I adapted the work I did for corporations for families and came up with The Three Big Questions.

Jarvis:

Masterpiece Wine Facility Built in a 45,000 Square Foot Cave

ecently, we had the pleasure of visiting Jarvis Estates in Napa. The entire wine facility is contained in a 45, 000 square foot cave.

Founded by William and Leticia Jarvis, much of their vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, but they also grow Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and a tiny block of Tempranillo, a Spanish grape variety.

The entire tour and tasting takes place within the cave.

Some highlights of the tour include a beautiful waterfall flowing into a river channel in the floor of one of the tunnels running through the cave.

You must walk on large stones over the small creek to enter the tasting grotto. The crystal room contains a variety of crystals imported from Brazil and other countries.

Another cavern can also hold up to 500 people for special events.

We especially enjoyed a small room where Reserve wines and large bottles are dipped into wax.

The wax comes in various colored blocks then put into a pot, heated and corked bottles are lowered into the wax making for a beautiful presentation.

Our host was Susan, who was very knowledgeable and proud of the Jarvis wines. Our tasting included 2018 Finch Hollow Chardonnay, 2016 Tempranillo, 2014 Cabernet Franc, 2014 Merlot, 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2014 Lake William Blend.

We especially enjoyed the unfiltered Chardonnay and Lake William blend that went back to Danville with us. Both bottles were also dipped in wax that added class to their eloquent and excellent taste.

Finally, Jarvis also offers a program to make your own wine from their vineyard grapes. You can choose from a half or full barrel, guided through the aging process then bottled with your customized label. It makes a great addition to your wine cellar and a ‘perfect‘ gift for your wine lover friends.

“But I’m RIGHT!”

I

’ve heard clients say it innumerable times. And often times, it’s true – the client is right and the other side is wrong and taking advantage. BUT . . . . . . being right isn’t necessarily the most cost-efficient way to go.

When a client says, “I don’t care what it costs, I’m going to hold them accountable for what they did to me!”, I inevitably tell what I call “The Carol Burnett” story. Don’t know that one? Here’s the short version: Carol Burnett sued National Enquirer, Inc. for libel; the case went to trial in California and she was awarded $1.6M by a jury in 1976. After a lengthy appeals process, her $1.6M jury award was reduced to $200,000.00 by the Court of Appeals (Burnett v.

National Enquirer, Inc. (1983) 144 Cal.App.3d 991). According to the Appellate Opinion, Ms. Burnett had at least four attorneys working on the appeal; she probably had a similar team of lawyers litigating and trying before the jury case. Eventually, there was an out of court settlement, and she donated all proceeds to charity.

It can be expensive to be right. Ms. Burnett won at trial, but it’s more likely than not that she paid a lot more than $200,000.00 for

attorneys’ fees and costs to litigate, try, and answer the appeal. Ms. Burnett was apparently asked about having spent more money to pursue her case than what she got as a result. She said, basically, “It was never about the money.”

If, like Ms. Burnett, you can afford to be right, then go for it.

Litigate and try your case, and be prepared to go through the appeals process; also be prepared to lose and still have to pay your attorney and the costs to litigate/try/appeal your case. But if you’re someone who doesn’t have quite the same financial resources as Ms. Burnett had when she sued National Enquirer, then you might want to reconsider if you can afford the cost to prove you’re right.

Sometimes, just knowing you’re right is enough; you don’t have to spend the money to prove it.

January Book Review: China Rich Girlfriend

hina Rich Girlfriend, by Kevin Kwan, is the sequel of Crazy Rich Asians and is just as exciting as the first book. China Rich Girlfriend takes place two years after the events in the first book, and each part of the book starts with a quote or passage that ties into the story. For example, the prologue begins with a passage from a news article that talks about a terrible car accident that recently occurred. As we continue reading, we are introduced to Bao Shaoyen (who is one of Eddie’s clients) and find out it was her son, Carlton, who was in the accident mentioned in the article at the beginning of the prologue. It turns out Carlton had two passengers with him when he got into the accident, and unfortunately one of the passengers ended up dying. Bao Shaoyen wants Eddie’s help to keep this information from reaching the press because her husband is a top politician, and she is afraid this information would cause him to lose his office. Eddie then blackmails his Aunt Eleanor into helping Bao Shaoyen and that is what eventually leads Eleanor to Rachel’s father.

It was a bit sad to see how the people who always had wealth and prestige in their family often look down on the people who had to work hard to move their way up in society. Even though they can now afford the same luxuries, they still aren’t always accepted by the upper class unless they behave a certain way (even the rich have certain rules to follow and breaking them can result in losing privileges).

The ending of China Rich Girlfriend made me wonder how things were going to play out in the final book. We know Eleanor now approves of Rachel because she is part of China’s wealthy elite, but we don’t know if Su Yi would change her mind. There’s been a few passages in the book where Nick is advised to stay on his grandmother’s good side or he would risk losing his inheritance.

The last book is titled Rich People Problems, and I had read the summary that says Nick’s grandmother is on her deathbed and he decides to pay her a final visit (there’s also an argument over her will, which I believe might have something to do with Nick’s inheritance). It really makes me wonder if Nick will be able to patch things up with his grandmother and still be able to inherit her house or if it would go to someone else.

Just like Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend switches perspective between different characters and gives us an insight to the issues they are dealing with. For example, we have Rachel visiting China and trying to get to know her father and his family.

he Raven Golf Club at South Mountain is not your classic desert golf course. Pine trees are everywhere! Five miles south of the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, this tranquil golf track has great views of the Phoenix skyline and broad views of the rugged South Mountains.

Designed by Gary Panks and David Graham in 1995, land was transformed by moving 800,000 cubic yards of earth, bringing in thousands of mature pine trees and truckloads of pine needles to form a base. The result was a fun track with lush rolling fairways bordered by countless pine trees and an occasional palm tree supplemented with three substantial lakes. There is just no other golf course in the southwest part of the United States like this. Unlike most desert courses, which have forced carries and punishing barrancas, this is a very fun, playable yet challenging course. Developed on only 162 acres, a tremendous variety of holes will require all the clubs in your bag. Four sets of tees provide good choices. The fairways are reasonably wide, but errant balls will find pine trees. The key is to find the putting surface. Greens are surrounded by grassy swales that gobble up errant approach shots and make recovery shots more challenging. Fairway bunkers are modest, and the green bunkering is more limited than most. A major grass tee double-sided practice range that includes five target greens is available near a huge putting green. A commitment to service excellence is evident throughout the facility.

The first hole illustrates the incredibly unique element of this desert course – the dense pine trees and associated pine needle ground cover. Short Par4’s in the 300-yard range provide a fun challenge.

Large greens surrounded by grassy swales are commonplace. The final hole is an eye-catching medium length Par4 beauty. After a safe tee shot to the left side, the approach shot needs to navigate away from water hazards closely guarding both right and behind the green. The eighteenth provides a picturesque backdrop to the clubhouse and grille.

The Raven Golf Club at South Mountain is like no other desert course in the Phoenix area. Thousands of pine trees provide a Midwest or Eastern course feel. Being so close to the Phoenix airport, it’s easy to find.
