W E LC O M E America has long been the land of opportunity for refugees and immigrants. In recent years, conflicts, instability, and disasters have driven millions of individuals from their home countries in search of a better future; many find themselves on U.S. soil with others who have come to rejoin family or restart their lives and call the U.S. their new home. These newcomers from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Venezuela, and beyond often leave everything behind to forge new paths and rebuild their lives. Many bring with them education, skills, and credentials that they are eager to contribute. Upwardly Global is there, helping refugees and immigrants to restart their careers in the U.S. Supporting the welcome and inclusion of immigrants and refugees is our passion. With our friends and partners gathered here tonight, we have worked to shape policies that advance inclusion and remove employment barriers, enabling thousands of immigrants and refugees to continue their careers and fully contribute to our economy and communities. Upwardly Global empowers refugee and immigrant professionals with job skills, coaching, and in-demand credentials needed to rebuild their careers in roles across industries including IT, engineering, finance, business, and healthcare. We also work with employer partners to promote practices such as diverse hiring and share our resources and learning tools with frontline immigrant organizations and workforce providers — including government agencies and community organizations — to expand our reach and increase our impact. Finally, we support policy priorities and narratives that advance equity and inclusion. As we scale to serve more of the 2.3 million unemployed or underemployed refugees and immigrants with professional skills, we are deeply appreciative of our wonderful community — our Board, Leadership Councils, staff, employer partners, sponsors, and donors — for making our work possible.

Not all newcomers are as fortunate. Yuri graduated from Rutgers University with a triple degree in mathematics, computer science, and economics and earned an MBA at NYU Stern School of Business. Yuri has worked for 23 years in investment banking at Bear Stearns, UBS and LionTree covering media and communications clients. Most recently he joined Presidio as head of strategy and corporate development while remaining as senior advisory to LionTree.

THE HOST Emmy-award winning journalist Yasmin Vossoughian is anchor

of “MSNBC Reports” on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. ET. Prior to joining MSNBC, she was an anchor for The Daily Share on HLN, a show that looked at the top stories on the internet and how they were playing out online. From the Benghazi hearings to the election of Donald Trump- she was at the center of it all. Earlier, Vossoughian served as a reporter for the local New York City cable news channel NY1. Her accomplishments include on-site coverage of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation and as one of the first reporting teams to broadcast from the severely hit borough of Staten Island. Vossoughian’s entry into journalism was as a world news correspondent at the Gallup World Poll. In that role, she interviewed leaders from across the globe including Madeleine Albright in Qatar, Newt Gingrich in Washington D.C., young West African victims of HIV/AIDS and malaria, Fatah youth in the West Bank, and experts in water filtration and environmental protection in Singapore. In 2005 she became a correspondent for Al Gore’s newly launched Current TV and the following year received a Cine Golden Eagle Award for her work there. A graduate of Occidental College in Los Angeles with an Advanced Bachelor of Arts degree, Vossoughian skills include fluency in French and Farsi.

Krishan Bhatia serves as President and Chief Business Officer for NBCUniversal’s Advertising Sales division. Krishan, with the help of his 500-person team, oversees Digital and Advanced Advertising Sales as well as the division’s One Platform

technology, measurement, and operations functions — spanning a portfolio of TV, CTV/OTT, and digital assets, including the company’s ad-supported streaming platform Peacock, that reaches 230 million U.S. adults every month. In

Tony Goncalves is the former Chief Revenue Officer at WarnerMedia and is a member of Upwardly Global’s Board. With parents who immigrated from Portugal when he was just four years old, Tony grew up understanding what it meant to start from scratch in a new country and sacrifice for your children’s future. Practicing kindness in his own life and work, he is committed to opening more opportunities for immigrants and refugees today and works to ensure that we are a welcoming country, practicing kindness in his own life and work. After school, David began his career in data science and artificial intelligence, with a specific focus on the marketing and media industries. He has a deep and holistic understanding of media and advertisers and how best to serve them, and has been a long-time Nielsen Corporation customer and partner. David has a proven track record of implementing growth strategies, overseeing strategic transactions, and creating value for stakeholders. Prior to joining Nielsen Corporation, David served as Senior Vice President of Cognitive Solutions at IBM. There, he led IBM’s artificial intelligence initiatives, using machine learning to support enterprise customers across a large number of verticals, including healthcare, financial services, retail, and media. Earlier in his career, David was Chairman and Chief Executive of The Weather Company, which was acquired by IBM.

He also previously served as President of Akamai, a cloud platform technology company; Board Member of Publicis Groupe; and Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Digitas Inc. Currently, David serves on the Board of Directors for Best Buy and is Chairman of the Board for Teach for America.
