Unveiling Unpopular Opinions: Challenging Bridal Hair and Makeup Traditions BY B GANDY

10

BLAC K BRI DE. C OM

I

n the ever-evolving world of bridal beauty, trends come and go, and opinions on what's considered essential can be as diverse as the array of bouquets adorning the aisle. As a seasoned bridal artist, I’ve had the privilege of working with nearly 500 brides throughout my career, so let’s just say I’ve witnessed the evolution of preferences and challenging the status quo. In this article, I’ve partnered with Maame Wilson of Glam By Maame as we dare to explore some unpopular opinions that may revolutionize the way brides approach their wedding day beauty.

The Trial Conundrum: Do You Really Need One? Our simple answer? No. Of course, we know that the traditional narrative insists that a bridal hair and makeup trial is an absolute must, akin to the first dance or cutting the cake. However, we propose a somewhat “radical” notion: You may not need a trial. Now, we say this depends on the experience level of your hair and makeup team.

BLACK BR IDE .C OM

11

12

BLAC K BRI DE. C OM

You will notice that many highly trained and highly sought-after beauty pros have eliminated this step from their process to create a more streamlined experience for brides. In our vast experience, we've witnessed the transformational power of trust and how it truly allows you to do your best work. While there simply is no replicating the absolute magic that takes place on your wedding day, you have to ask yourself, do you really want a recycled look for your wedding?! Now, we encourage brides to do their due diligence when searching for the perfect glam squad: ead reviews, look for a consistent body of work, and take into consideration their level of experience as newer artists may find a trial beneficial for their process.

Breaking Away from Tradition: Colored Hair for Brides Traditional norms often dictate that brides should maintain their natural hair color, but why not consider breaking away from tradition? Colored hair, when done tastefully, can add a unique and personal touch to the bridal look. We especially loved how our bride Candice, who is pictured here, chose a rich chocolate brown with a touch of warm copper highlights. Colored locks can be a reflection of the bride's individuality, and add an unexpected yet sophisticated element to the overall aesthetic.

14

BLAC K BRI DE . C OM

Unconventional Elegance: The Allure of Red Lips on Your Wedding Day In the world of bridal beauty, traditions often steer towards soft, neutral hues, delicate pinks, or classic nudes when it comes to lip colors. However, as a seasoned bridal artist, I believe it's time to challenge the norm and celebrate the bold and the beautiful— especially when it comes to a classic red lip for a wedding day. The idea of rocking red lipstick may raise a few eyebrows, deemed by some as unconventional or too daring for the occasion. Yet, there is an undeniable sexiness and sophistication that a perfectly chosen shade of red can bring to a bridal look. The key lies in finding the right shade that complements your skin tone and harmonizes with your overall aesthetic. Whether it's a classic, timeless red, or a deeper, sultrier burgundy, red lipstick can add a touch of drama and elevate your entire bridal ensemble. If all else fails and you’re not fully ready to step out of your comfort zone, you can always do a red lip for your reception! BLACK BR IDE .C OM

15

Veil Optional: Alternatives to the Traditional Bridal Headpiece Veils have long been synonymous with bridal attire, but the trend is shifting towards alternatives. From delicate floral crowns to intricate crystal hair accessories, pearls, and even statement earrings, brides are opting for personalized adornments that better reflect their style. The veil is no longer a mandatory accessory, but rather a choice that complements the overall aesthetic.

Separate Spaces, Shared Serenity: The Bride's Exclusive Getting Ready Haven Tradition dictates that the bridal party should share a common space while getting ready. You know, throwing back mimosas and dancing to the beat of Juvenile’s “Back That Thang Up,” all while sharing memories of high school or college? However, we propose a deviation from the norm: a separate getting-ready space exclusively for the bride. 16

BLAC K BRI DE. C OM

Separate getting-ready spaces have been a total game-changer for brides, and one we all can appreciate as vendors (just ask your fave photographer). This private haven allows the bride to decompress and relax in a serene and focused environment, minimizing distractions and fostering an atmosphere of tranquility. It allows us to work uninterrupted, and ensures our bride can truly relax and take in the moment before the chaos—I mean “fun”—begins. :)

In-House Excellence: Why Your Bridal Party Deserves a Unified Glam Team While the idea of bringing in an external glam team for your bridal party may seem appealing, there's value in unity that should not be overlooked. An in-house team ensures a cohesive vision, harmonious timing, and a seamless transition from one member to another. It guarantees that everyone walks down the aisle exuding a shared aesthetic, creating a visual symphony that complements the overall wedding theme. In addition, it saves you the hassle of outsourcing and communicating with multiple vendors. If your bridal hair stylist and makeup artist don’t have a team of their own, we recommend asking them for referrals rather than just winging it on your own.

The Radiance of Reinvention: Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone The allure of familiarity can sometimes overshadow the joy of discovery. Brides are often advised to stick to what they know, but what if what you know is only a fraction of your beauty potential? This is your day and your time to shine! We encourage brides to allow themselves to step outside their comfort zones. Now, does this mean go out and do something wild and crazy with your look? Of course not! (Unless of course, that’s your thing!) We just mean that you have every day to look like your ordinary self, so why not embrace this moment to bring that star quality, wow factor that no one is probably expecting from you?

Lash Extensions: To Do Or Not To Do Lash extensions have become a standard beauty service over the past few years, and are now a part of many women’s beauty regimes, synonymous with going to get your brows and nails done. But hear me out, while extensions promise a long-lasting, hassle-free, “I woke up like this vibe,” they come with their own set of challenges when it comes to curating a wedding day look. They can often either be too much or not enough and although I can stack a lash or clusters on top, I’m limited in how I can shape the eye and personalize the lash style. If you MUST have lash extensions, consult with your makeup artist to see what they recommend. I always encourage my brides to opt for a more natural wispy set that will allow me a little more flexibility.

All Day Glam: Necessity vs Luxury Let's be honest, everything in the world of weddings is a luxury, but let’s dig a little deeper into this one. Traditionally, brides book their glam team and are done with hair and makeup before the ceremony, leaving them to navigate touch-ups and transformations alone. However, we advocate for an all-day experience. We have found this level of support is what brides truly need on their wedding days. Whether your hair is battling heat, wind, or precipitation, or your makeup is trying to withstand the tears, oil, and sweat, having your glam team by your side provides a different level of peace of mind. Trust me when I say we have seen it all (and I do mean all), so we highly recommend this, especially if you are planning a look change. Trust us, you’ll be glad you did. In challenging these unpopular opinions, we aim to inspire brides to embrace their individuality, think outside the beauty box, and redefine what bridal elegance truly means. Ultimately, the wedding day should be a celebration of love, and the beauty journey leading up to it should be a reflection of the bride's unique personality and style.

SHAPING YOUR WELLNESS GOALS FOR 2024 Establish Achievable Wellness Goals for Success BY TONEKA ROYAL

I

rrespective of your goals for 2024, be it pursuing a new career path, prioritizing self-care, or achieving your dream body, a strategic approach to goal-setting is essential. To boost the attainability of your aspirations, it’s crucial to fine-tune your intentions and choose realistic objectives that will sustain your motivation, even in the face of life’s challenges. Explore the following tips for crafting purposeful goals and staying committed to your plan! 1) Avoid Overloading Yourself with Wellness Goals: Avoid the urge to pursue all your wellness goals simultaneously. Whether it’s enhancing sleep, reducing sugar intake, or maintaining a regular gym routine, attempting to address everything at once can be overwhelming and diminish your chances of adhering to the plan. Instead, concentrate on just one or two goals at a time to channel your efforts effectively. Give yourself two weeks to master and internalize each goal before moving on to the next one.

20

BLAC K BRI DE . C OM

2) Identify Your Driving Forces: Understand the motivations driving your journey! Whether it’s getting ready for a significant event, like a wedding, or addressing health concerns through dietary enhancements, acknowledging meaningful reasons can act as potent motivators, inspiring you to stay committed day after day. Whatever your motivator may be, establish a daily reminder. Use sticky notes, photos, or any tools necessary to help to keep you motivated. 3) Invest in Professional Guidance: Starting your wellness journey can be overwhelming at first. To navigate the complexities of what to do, whether it’s related to nutrition or training, consider investing in a professional, such as a personal trainer or nutritionist. Their expertise can remove guesswork, offering you a personalized and secure program. Keep in mind that laying a solid foundation through preparation is crucial for success.

4) Adopt a Holistic Approach: Whether your goal is to run a mile or ensure eight hours of quality sleep each night, taking a holistic approach is vital. A diet heavy on caffeine and sugar may hinder restful sleep or impede your running stamina. While specific training for your goal is essential, don’t neglect other aspects of your overall health. 5) Embrace Adaptability: While setting a specific, measurable, and attainable goal is crucial, be open to flexibility in your wellness journey. As you progress, you might realize that your initial goal was either too modest or ambitious. Allow yourself the flexibility to adjust your goals or redefine success based on your evolving experiences and insights. In summary, the essence of a successful and enduring wellness journey lies in mastering balance and consistency. Avoid overwhelming yourself by concentrating on one to two goals at a time instead of pursuing all simultaneously. Delving into the motivation behind your aspirations brings a profound sense of purpose. Don’t give up. Stay focused and kick off 2024 with determination! “In your wellness journey remember: ‘She believed she could, so she did.’ Embrace the power within you as you navigate the path to a healthier and happier you in 2024 and beyond.”

Brittney Miles

t was young love for Brittney and Miles when they met at the age of 15. Their sisters were best friends who thought it would be fun to set them up. In the summer of 2012, Brittney was visiting her dad in Texarkana where she met Miles at her dad’s house, and they became friends pretty quickly. Miles immediately knew she was the one but Brittney wasn’t as sold at first, so he visited her every day for the remainder of her time in Texarkana. His persistence paid off because a year later, they were officially a couple. Fall in love with their engagement session, captured by Breaux Moments.

24

I purchased the ring behind her back before we left the store. Over the next six months, I planned a rooftop proposal in Houston, visited both her mom and dad to ask for their blessing, and invited all of our family and friends, proposing on my birthday on July 2nd, 2022. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING?

ENGAGEMENT STORY:

Miles: What I’m looking forward to the most about our wedding is finally being able to call Brittney my wife. I’ve known since I was 15 years old that she was the woman I was always meant to be with.

In December 2021, we had been dating for 8 years, but were 24 and 25, respectively, so in our minds, we were still pretty young. However, we would always talk about our future together. On December 21st, 2021, we went ring shopping, and while at the jeweler, Brittney found and fell in love with her ring.

Brittney: I’m looking forward to finally calling my best friend, soulmate, and partner my HUSBAND. This day represents the challenges we’ve faced over our relationship and how they’ve made us stronger, closer to God, and better people for ourselves and each other.

Taylar Terrell

n January 24, 2014, Taylar thought she was enjoying a typical Friday night in downtown Hattiesburg, Mississippi at Brownstone's restaurant, but it turned into so much more. She was having dinner with a friend and Terrell was sitting across the way having drinks with a group of friends as well. The night was filled with stares of interest from Terrell, before he finally worked up the courage to walk over to introduce himself. After years of friendship, the couple decided to take it to the next level in 2018, and now they are preparing to tie the knot early next spring! Get inspired by their sultry engagement session, captured by Flemings Photography. ENGAGEMENT STORY:

May 26, 2023: Another Friday night special. It's fair to say Fridays are when all great things happen for us. Hence, that is why we are getting married on a Friday. After an amazing

dinner at our favorite restaurant Del Frisco's, Terrell stopped by the Hilton hotel on the way home to "use the bathroom.” He insisted that I come in and enjoy one last drink at the hotel bar before heading home. After getting a drink, he suggested that we go for a walk by the hotel waterfall. After a short walk across the bridge that sat over the water, we stopped to sit on the bench and continued a conversation from dinner. It was at that moment that Terrell got down on one knee and asked to spend the rest of his life with me. I am unable to recall his exact words as I immediately started crying once it was clear to me what was happening. Nevertheless, it was an unforgettable and truly special night. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? Seeing my fiancé's face as I walk down the aisle, and celebrating with our close friends and family.

ade and Cedrick met through social media in 2018, after Cedrick direct messaged Sade with eye emojis on Instagram! After messaging back and forth for a few weeks, they met for lunch at the Cheesecake Factory. At the time, they had both just moved to the same part of Dallas. Sade and Cedrick remained good friends until making it official in 2020. The couple have grown together since then, including welcoming their baby boy, Cedrick III, in June 2021 and making a move to Miami, FL for Cedrick’s NFL career. Get inspired by their stunning engagement session, which was captured by PD Photography. ENGAGEMENT STORY: In August of this year, Cedrick had a preseason game in Houston, TX so we came up with a plan to get all our family from Dallas to Houston to see the game. We planned a dinner the day before at our favorite restaurant. When we arrived at the restaurant, Cedrick convinced me he only got a private room at

the restaurant so our son could run around as he pleased since we had to do a later dinner. We had an amazing dinner with both our families who we hadn’t seen in months. When it was time for the check, they brought out the special plate asking for me to marry him. Before I knew it, he was on one knee while trying to get my attention because I was jumping up and down yelling yes already. We spent the rest of the evening with champagne and excitement while rushing back to the hotel to make it in time for his curfew since he had a game the next day. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? We have family scattered across the U.S., so having an event for everybody to join together and celebrate is so exciting. ndrea and Julian first met in July of 2010 at a wedding. They lost touch after that summer, but as fate would have it, they reconnected via Instagram in August 2017. The timing was right, and the two became inseparable. After a romantic proposal, the couple decided to celebrate the next chapter of their relationship with a classy engagement session with Mesus Studios. ENGAGEMENT STORY:

It all took place at Andrea’s 30th birthday party. As the party went on, everyone was vibing and enjoying themselves. Unbeknownst to Andrea, Julian had a surprise up his sleeve, and everyone was in on it. Julian called Andrea to the middle of the party. Everyone surrounded them while Julian professed his love for Andrea. Soon after, he got down on one knee and asked her to be his forever. She tearfully said yes. The DJ went on to play Next’s “Wifey,” and everyone danced the night away.

LOVE ACROSS CONTINENTS: Tiffany & MJ's Journey from Accra to Forever

n a story that could only be orchestrated by God, Tiffany and Martin (MJ) met in Accra, Ghana when Tiffany took a spontaneous trip for her friend's birthday. Let's just say they met in a bar! (Haha) That is actually how they met on May 29, 2023. After dinner, Tiffany and her friends decided to go dancing at Front/Back. There, a friend introduced them. They stayed up until 7:00am the next morning getting to know one another. This chance meeting led to a friendship that soon blossomed into a beautiful love story. THE ENGAGEMENT STORY For Tiffany and MJ, Valentine's Day is cause for celebration for a new reason. After an 8.5 month courtship, MJ planned the perfect surprise proposal but the plan was almost ruined by a sudden illness. Tiffany says, “When MJ asked me to be his wife, it was hands down the easiest yes I’ve given in my life (next to my yes to Christ!). I was sure the proposal would come during my December 2023 trip based on our conversations. I honestly thought it would happen earlier in my visit, so I was caught off guard. Valentine's Day was the perfect cover!" GROOMS STORY: "I chose Valentine's Day because it is a day of love, and I wanted to express the depth of my love. I also wanted a new reason to celebrate February 14. I chose the beach because I remembered an earlier conversation when Tiffany shared that she would love to be proposed to at the beach. We both love the beach because it's one of the places where we feel God's presence and witness His creation. It's been a place of peace for both of us, and I wanted to do it as the sun was rising because we both enjoy sunrises. Before I planned the proposal, I spoke to her father to ask for her hand in marriage. He gave me his blessing, and

then I asked her mom and shared my plans with her brother." WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? Our love is special because it is true testimony of intentionality, the power of prayer, and genuine friendship. As a multicultural, long distance couple we have had to navigate worlds entirely unknown to us from two different continents/countries. Love has truly carried us back and forth across the ocean. WHAT WAS THE THEME OF YOUR SHOOT? "To communicate our joy and love for God and one another through photo storytelling. The vision is to portray luxury, stunning images, and decor, accompanied by powerful bold colors." Royalty - For this scene we wanted to honor our African heritage and the place where our love story started. Black Power - Blackity, Black, Black, Black! (IYKYK) While our Black experiences have been different, we share a love for our people and their advancement. We genuinely and unapologetically root for everyone Black! Kingdom Courtship - In our union, we have chosen to honor God in every way: regular fasting/praying, with our bodies, mentally/ emotionally, with our gifts and how we serve one another. We wanted to capture the purity of our courtship. WERE THERE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS DURING THE SHOOT? "The most memorable moments were the laughter we shared, which is evident in the photos." WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? Having our families and friends come together to witness the celebration of our love. HAVE YOU STARTED PLANNING YOUR WEDDING? Yes, we started planning a couple of weeks after the engagement. Our wedding will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2024 in Accra, Ghana. The planning is going well but has had some interesting moments as they merge cultures. Most of the planning has taken place virtually, as well. WEDDING FASHION

A DISCIPLED STANDARD:

A Timeline of How Black Brides Have Used Their Sacred Beauty Perspectives as the Blueprint to Shaping Their Bridal Beauty Looks & Influencing Others to Follow Them BY KENNEDI LÉSHEA

S

ince the beginning of time, Black women have stood as the mood board— the blueprint for all things beauty—much without credit offered to them. Whether it’s red carpet or everyday beauty, we have found people from outside cultures glean and learn from the methodical and sacred traditions of our unique and range-filled beauty perspective. While we’ve infiltrated every inch of the beauty sector, one that is not often mentioned is our contributions to the bridal space. While our beauty icons are often discussed and applauded for their general contributions to the sector like Nina Simone’s artistic hairstyles, Minnie Riperton’s flower-crowned fro, Lauryn Hill’s bronzed glam, and Donna Summer’s blue eye and red lip combo, what they’re often not credited for is their wedding beauty looks. From the various

56

BLAC K BRI DE . C OM

ways we’ve styled our hair to match our aesthetics underneath our veils to the way we’ve used rouge as a multi-purpose product to give “blush and bashful,” not once have Black brides considered adhering to the confines of what popular culture has intended to push when it comes to what bridal beauty can and should look like for them, and the proof is in our timelines. We can look back to the real-life celebrity weddings of timeless Black beauty icons, like Diana Ross and Whitney Houston with their hat-adorned veils, to the ceremonies of our Black beauty icons of today like Gabrielle Union and Issa Rae who took simplistic, minimal routes aesthetically. No matter which end of the bridal spectrum you find yourself on, you can see the importance of continuing the Black bridal beauty tradition amongst these women.

1948 MARIA COLE

Wife of Nat King Cole, Maria Cole was a vision. With her rather minimal makeup look and deep set curled bob, Cole’s wedding look made for a timeless reference point for brides of the future to look back on and glean from.

1953 CORETTA

SCOTT KING

Civil Rights activist and matriarch Coretta Scott King spoke to the times she married in when she rocked a retro bumper bang to style her majestically healthy and thick coils, which she paired with a glossed lip to add flair to her simplistic glam. Photo credit Boston.com (archives)

1986 DIANA ROSS

Diana Ross’ wedding to Arne Naess was an iconic one to say the least. But what made it such a splash was Ms. Ross’ beauty look. With delicate flowers hugging each side of her face to stylize her simplistic low bunned hair, her perfectly blushed cheeks and lips made her the most gorgeous blushing bride—a trend that was highly popular then and has made its comeback in 2023. The best part of her look? Her signature, dramatic eye makeup—a nod to her love for a deep set crease.

1977 VERONICA ALI

Veronica Ali became the wife of iconic athlete and activist Muhammad Ali in 1977, but her beauty look stands the test of time to today. Simplistic and timeless in execution, her eyebrows reflected a perfect arch, her lips held a sheer gloss over them, and her hair fell into a seamless pile of loosened curls to frame her face.

1992 WHITNEY HOUSTON

Whitney’s 1992 wedding look was in alignment with her signature glam, which she was known for at the time. Marked by a smokey eye and a reddish brown lip, Whitney Houston stood for the brides of the ‘90s who were looking to remain bridal and sexy all at once.

1993 MARIAH CAREY

Mariah Carey’s 1993 nuptials were iconic in every sense of the word, but not just because of her billowing ballgown or ever-dramatic veil. Instead, her look was iconic because her glam was so in tune with her natural beauty. Sticking to her neutral glam for her special day, the star of Mariah’s beauty look was her signature brown curls that were styled down and served as the perfect hairdo for her and all future naturalistas looking for representation in rocking their natural coils for their big days.

2001 TONI BRAXTON

R&B Queen Toni Braxton’s wedding look was heavily 2000s coded, while remaining in tune with this seemingly whimsical wedding aesthetic she had set for herself. Her beauty look included caramel tones with bronzed cheeks and her iconic overlined nude lips, while her hair gave us Disney Princess vibes in its half-uphalf-down design.

2008 TIA MOWRY

Actress and ‘90s pop culture icon Tia Mowry was a vision in beauty for her 2008 wedding. Unlike many brides, Tia added a pop of color to her eyelook with hints of green and teal to coincide perfectly with the beautiful floral-heavy theme that surrounded her. Her shimmering pale pink lip balanced the bold eye out well, and her side part low bun added delicacy to the bold look.

2014 SOLANGE

Solange Knowles had one of the most iconic weddings ever in 2014, and in part what made it so epic was her glam. With her perfectly coiffed afro, thick brows, and bold red lip, the singer made a bold statement against the resistance of what bridal beauty had been standardized to look like at the time. In doing so, she inspired brides to stick to their guns and defy the odds when it came to crafting their wedding day glam.

2016 CIARA

While it’s more common to see brides stick to brown and black hair to align with the fictionalized sense of “timelessness” for their wedding day, Ciara took the opposite route and went with ombré’d blonde locs for her special day. She styled her hair in half-up-half-down uniformed loose curls and delicate, shaping tendrils on either side of her face.

2018 MEGHAN MARKLE

Duchess Meghan Markle’s simplistic and minimal wedding day beauty was one for the books. With bronzed cheeks and perfectly highlighted high points, the best part of her look was the peek through of her natural freckles. She reminded brides that makeup doesn’t always have to just conceal what they don’t like on their wedding day, but instead can also reveal what they love most about themselves.

2020 ELAINE WELTEROTH

While host, former EIC of Teen Vogue, and activist Elaine Welteroth could’ve let the worst of 2020 get in the way of her wedding plans, she went viral for doing the opposite. Instead of postponing, she opted to have a stoop wedding ceremony as her neighbors watched on with her hair in braids she had just gotten done for the pandemic and simplistic, minimal glam that she did herself. This beauty look was simple in execution but complex in heart, and it served as an example to brides that sometimes the most impact comes from doing the least.

2021 TELSHA

ANDERSONBOONE

2023 SOFIA RICHIE

Fashion mogul Telsha Anderson-Boone practically broke the fashion Internet when her wedding pictures dropped in 2021 and for good reason: Her glam was rather iconic. Despite being deemed “non-traditional” by most, her hair actually called back to the creatively liberated looks of beauty icons past like Nina Simone, who were unafraid of tapping into innovation when it came to styling their coils. Telsha’s hair was styled into a two-part ponytail molded into one in an epically sculptural way.

Fashion icon in the making and youngest daughter of Lionel Richie, Sofia Richie Grainge seemingly made bridal cool again when she married her hubby this year in a slicked back, middle part low bun and coral flushed cheeks. Her simplistic and minimal bridal glam reminded brides that they don’t have to go full glam to make their beauty look valued.

2023 COURTNEY

SHELBYTHOMPSON

of Gospel music group Shelby 5, Courtney Shelby-Thompson alluded to the bridal beauty trends of today by going bold and dramatic for her wedding day makeup and hair. Noted with hints of neutral browns, her eyelook was a smoked makeup with dramatic lashes. Then she added a browngirl friendly lined lip combo, bronzed cheeks, and a curled updo that offered a nod to the whimsical times of old.

2023 BEANCA ROBE

Brand manager Beanca Robe went the road less traveled and rocked chic braids modeled softly into a low bun. Then she completed her look with simplistic makeup that was coded with gorgeous pink tones to compliment her brown skin and reminded Black brides that they and their trends are the beauty standard.

We all know lace as the hallmark of traditional bridal fashion, symbolizing all that is delicate and demure. However, this season, lace is taking on a different look. In June 2020, Jett and Frantzky found love in the friendly skies! They were on a connecting flight where Jett was heading to California and Frantzky was heading to Colorado. Jett shares, “I thought he probably wasn’t into me because he didn’t offer to help put my bag up, but he later said he was just a little too stunned to speak. We barely talked the whole flight (mostly because I was sleeping). However, when the plane landed in Dallas, I woke up and Frantzky hit me with his best opener: ‘How was your nap?’ It worked. We exchanged numbers, and he walked me to my next flight.” Frantzky came to L.A. the following week to take Jett out on a date, and the rest is history. The couple dated for two years and got engaged on the Amalfi Coast in August 2022. Get inspired by their romantic bohemian elopement, captured by Meagan Wilken. After staying up all night writing our vows, we barely slept before waking up to a beautiful sunrise over Lake Wakatipu. It was a blurry mix of nerves and excitement. We blasted a playlist of our favorite songs along on the drive. We felt on top of the world even before our helicopter took off and headed up toward the mountain where we would be married. The views from the helicopter were so incredible, not a single cloud was in the sky. We said our vows on the mountaintop and popped champagne to celebrate. It was simple, adventurous, and full of love—an excellent representation of our union. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE? n October 22, 2020, Neville arrived at a house gathering, and Chelsie opened the door for him. Instantly he thought, “Man, this girl’s beautiful. She’s amazing.” They talked a little at the gathering, but nothing came of it that night. A few days later, Neville reached out to Chelsie, and they got the chance to bond over their love for music and sports. It felt like they had known each other forever. After about a month, they were officially a couple. A year and a half later, Neville asked Chelsie to become his wife. This fun-loving couple tied the knot in an elegant, blackand-white wedding ceremony, followed by a reception that went viral! From the ceremony to the reception, everything went according to plan. With the bride being from DC and the groom having Jamaican roots, we wanted to incorporate both of our cultures. Our DJ Chris from CeeKay Soundz had us and all of our guests on the floor ALL NIGHT with the most popular Go Go and Caribbean tunes. Wedding planner T’Kiyah from TKO Total Events had the bright idea of having a Carnival style performance to highlight Neville’s Caribbean culture. We surprised our guests with a performance from Soka Tribe that included live costumed dancers, Moko Jumbies (stilt walkers), congas drummers, and more! When Chelsie changed into her reception jumpsuit by Albina Dyla she was reintroduced and danced her way back into the reception to “One Leg Up” by Pure Elegance, which has since gone viral on TikTok and Instagram.

WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: “You” by Jesse Powell. We definitely have that old school ‘90s type love, so we wanted to have a song from the ‘90s that describes us perfectly. The lyrics say, “The day I put my heart in your hand. And said that it was yours to keep, from this moment on, say that you'll always be mine,” so this was perfect for the occasion. amika and Darryl initially crossed paths in 2018, but it wasn't until 2020 that their journey together began, which was orchestrated by a mutual friend. Fate intervened, leading them to unexpectedly encounter each other in the vibrant energy of the celebration. They have been inseparable ever since! Secondly, I heard everyone gasp at how beautiful I looked when the doors opened.

Third, Spencer and I walked all around the venue as husband and wife. I did not want the day to end. Spencer: Aside from seeing my beautiful wife walking down the aisle, my top moment would have to be when all of the men in our lives were praying with me before the ceremony. To feel that support from all of these strong Black men, gave me assurance that God has truly blessed our families. WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: “Today I Do”by Tamia. n March 26, 2019 at Honky Tonk Central in Nashville, Tennessee, Sean was in town for a work convention, and Janay was there for a friend's 30th birthday. He made the first move, and it was enough for them to share a dance and exchange contact information. After a year of traditional dating, they officially became a couple in November 2019. Sean and Janay’s shared love of travel, fun, business, and community outreach made their bond even more special.

Leading up to the wedding was a whirlwind of emotions, with 120 close friends and family members invited, many of whom had never experienced such a trip before. On the wedding day, as a TV producer, I had prepared everything in advance, leaving the rest to fate. Having my 14 bridesmaids by my side was truly special, and Sean's constant smile throughout the reception, especially during the surprise performance by Ricky Blaze, made the night unforgettable.

The lovely couple got engaged in Portugal in April 2022, and they most recently tied the knot in a tropical destination wedding in Jamaica, captured by Neshaszda Photography.

WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: We chose "You're All I Need to Get By," and to capture the blend of old and new, we mixed the original recording by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell with the Method Man and Mary J. Blige cover version. This song resonated with us because we were both committed to creating a memorable wedding that was uniquely ours.

COVER STORY

From Strangers to Soulmates: The Story of

RANDALL AND KENDRA WOODFIN BY CANDICE DAVIE

L

ove has a way of finding you when you least expect it. This was certainly the case for Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama Randall Woodfin and his beautiful wife, real estate owner/broker Kendra Woodfin. They never expected that a chance encounter at a charity golf tournament would lead to a whirlwind romance. We sat down with the newlyweds to learn more about their captivating love story, and we traced their journey from casual acquaintances to a deeply committed couple. They also share the key moments that have defined their relationship and the shared goals that drive them forward. Plus, they highlight why they replanned their wedding with their team of professionals in just 19 days! BB: How did you two meet, and what was your first impression of each other?

BB: Kendra, what’s your rendition of how you two met?

Randall: I met Kendra at a charity golf event. It was May 2021, and we exchanged pleasantries, but it was short. I thought she was pretty, but I wasn’t thinking beyond that since I was working. I met a few of her team members, and we all took a picture together, but I didn’t think much about it. I jumped in the car and went to the next event. In June of 2021, at another event, we met again and ended up talking for at least an hour. We exchanged numbers and stayed in contact until we went on our first date.

Kendra: Sure, we did meet at the charity golf tournament. And I remember we were talking, and he cursed. When you look at a mayor, you think they’re so professional, and when he cursed, I thought, “Okay you’re a real person.” I always knew he was handsome. But after that, I thought to myself, “He’s cool.” My assistant was telling me that he and I should be together. I thought, “That’s the mayor. Are you crazy?” After that first meeting, I had this dream that he and I were riding around in a black BLACK BR IDE .C OM

truck. And when I woke up, I was thinking, “Why did I just have a dream about the mayor and me riding around listening to music?” When I saw him at the other event, I told him about the dream. That’s how we started talking for an hour. We exchanged numbers then and started texting a little bit, but not on anything romantic.

Randall: That’s honestly what it was for both of us. One day, she was having a bad day, and we met at The Paper Doll for a drink. Meeting her for that drink, I still wasn’t thinking anything, besides let’s just chop it up in person instead of talking by text. But when we hugged each other, everything changed. It was a flood of thoughts and emotions. We sat there for over an hour, then decided to have a bite to eat at a Mexican restaurant called El Barrio. We kissed after that, and we literally talked every day since then, which was July 1, 2021. BB: So that was your official first date? Randall: That’s what it became. Full circle, we ended up in the same place when I decided to propose at The Paper Doll. BB: That brings me to my next question. Tell us about how you proposed. Randall: The idea was to do something intimate, but also impactful and unique. I did it on a Sunday when The Paper Doll was closed. I wanted to relive where I first felt that connection with her from that hug. We even sat in the same place and had the same drink as well. I wanted to have sprinkles of our parents, the boys, and our immediate family and friends, our siblings, our close circle friends, my close circle friends. So, I made it into three parts. Where I proposed to her it was just us. I had a videographer and a photographer behind a curtain to capture the moment. And they knew to come out when a certain song played. Then, we went to El Barrio, where we had our first dinner. The restaurant was closed as

well, but when we walked in, her parents, my parents, and the two boys were there. It was a whole cry fest all over again. And then right next door, there was this new lounge. When she walked in, it was all of her siblings, all of my siblings, her close friends, all of my close friends. It was three surprises back-to-back. BB: Wow…That sounds amazing! Kendra, were you suspecting that a proposal was coming soon? Kendra: No, I thought that there were areas he thought he had to grow in before he was ready for marriage. So, I was not expecting that at all. He told me we were going to dinner on this day at this time and that he wanted me to wear something nice. This is not unusual for us because we’re always doing something. We went to The Paper Doll, it was dim and romantic and there was nobody there but the bartender. Randall ordered drinks, and I remembered it was the same drink we had on our first date. He went to the bathroom, and when he came back, he was acting nervous. The cameras came out, and I still wasn’t thinking anything because cameras are always following us.

When he asked me, I was genuinely shocked. I cried so bad because I was so wrong. I had made up my mind that he was not ready. I had to get myself together because we were going to go eat. When we walked in, our parents and the boys were in there, and then I cried again. Then we walked next door to this bar where it was like a whole party with all of our closest friends, some more family, and I was just overwhelmed at that point. BB: I read that you planned your wedding in less than a month. That’s very impressive. Was there a reason for that, and how was your wedding planning experience? Randall: At the beginning of April, we decided to have a wedding on December 31. That would give us enough time to plan and enough time to invite people from out of town. As each day, week, and month passed, 136

BLAC K BRI DE. C OM

it got so overwhelming, and we were over it. She finally said one day, “Do you think we’re doing this wedding for us or for everybody else?” I said, “It feels like for everybody else.” And when she said she did not want to do that, it was the most freeing feeling for me. We wanted to have something small and intimate, and we did not want to wait until December 31. We decided not to even have a bridal party anymore. I called a friend, whose private home overlooks the city, to see if her home was available. We decided to do it on a Sunday in October, because we didn’t want to compete with the football season. We went back to our wedding planner, and she didn’t give us any pushback. It all just came together in 19 days. Kendra: You’re absolutely right. Wedding planning became overwhelming, managing

people’s expectations about the day. When we realized we were doing it for others, we decided to make it much smaller, and we both felt relieved. The wedding planner and everyone else adjusted quickly, and I’m so grateful for them. When we got to our wedding, half of the things were put together by our amazing team that we did not know about. Randall: It was perfect. From the weather to the people that needed to be there. There may have been 40 people there. The wedding we had set for December 31, over 500 people had RSVP’d, and we weren’t even done sending out our invitations. This is the best decision she and I have ever made together. BB: Can you share a special memory or moment from your wedding day? Randall: My moment would be when she came down the aisle. I was so nervous I started making silly faces at her. My eyes never moved away from her. It was like everything and everyone else wasn’t there. Kendall: The first moment that I will not forget is when the pastor said, “Now presenting Randall and Kendra Woodfin.” And the second moment I will not forget, which is funny to me because I did not expect that: He tried to suck my face off in front of my parents. 138

BLAC K BRI DE . C OM

BB: What do you love most about Birmingham as a city and as a place to start a life together? Randall: I think one of the things that attracted me back home after undergrad was just that it was home. I have a big family, and I got to learn the city at an early age. Birmingham is a unique, cool place. And it’s one of the Blackest cities in America. There’s amazing food here and amazing history and culture. We already have a family, but we want to expand our family. I think Birmingham, Alabama holds its own and punches well above its weight. You have a family. Kendra: I’ve always loved Birmingham. I get to see it in a different light because of Randall’s position, and it makes me love it even more. I get to meet different people from different backgrounds who live here and hear their stories. It is special for me because we all get to be involved in the change that happens here.

BB: As public figures, how do you balance personal life and public responsibilities? Randall: I will be honest with you, I did not have work-life balance. The first two years in office, and then the coronavirus hit, and it kind of slowed things down. When I met Kendra, a couple of things clicked. One of the things was I needed to take care of myself. I need to be intentional and better at how I manage my time. I had this thought, if I want to be a successful mayor, my personal relationship needs to be healthy. And so I prioritize my relationship with Kendra, and everything else has either fallen into place or it has become better. As grueling and time consuming as this job is, I am a husband first. Kendra: Randall does a really good job at balancing it. I’ve never ever, even when we were dating, felt like I was second to anything. He always made me feel that I was his priority, and he still does. And we actually want to spend time together.

BLACK BR IDE .C OM

1 39

BB: Are there any goals that you both have set for your marriage? Randall: Expanding our family. We have Aubrey who’s 15, Mason is 10. We both come from big families and we both want a big family. So that is definitely a goal for us. I married a person that has an amazing hustle and work ethic. With that said, I’m learning this whole notion of the importance of wealth building, as well as what we pass to our children and next generation. Kendra: I think we also have a goal to grow spiritually together. And that’s one of my main things. We are trying to build a foundation on God. You want to not just leave a legacy with your name, but you also want to leave a legacy of love and faith to your children. BB: What’s next for you professionally? Randall: I’ve always wanted to be mayor of Birmingham, the city I was born and raised in. My vision is clear, serving here in this position and role—it feels like service, it doesn’t feel like a job. I get a chance to make an impact 140

BLAC K BRI DE . C OM

every day. I want to run for another term, and I still have two years remaining in this second term. That’s my immediate thoughts of what I am doing next. I’m comfortable telling you— and the world—that I’m going to be seeking reelection. Kendra: I plan to grow more in real estate. I want to do more developing and more commercial real estate. I also want to grow my team of agents and teach them more about commercial real estate and developing. I also want to learn what it means to be on the side of Randall in his position. And how do I use the platform that was given to me to help support him in what he’s doing. The love story of the Woodfins is a testament to the power of connection, destiny, and shared goals. From how they met to their intimate wedding, their journey is one of listening to your heart. As they navigate the challenges of public life and pursue their individual aspirations, their commitment to each other remains unwavering. Randall and Kendra’s story is a reminder that when two people find a deep connection, the possibilities are endless.

VOW RENEWAL

LATASHA & DAMION

L

atasha and Damion met in the summer of 1991 in Bloomington, IL at a college prep summer program. After graduating high school, they attended two different universities but maintained contact through a mutual friend. After college, Latasha joined Caterpillar at their headquarters in Peoria, which was also Damion’s hometown. “We started hanging out first as good friends before beginning a romantic relationship. We joke that we never dated; we were friends who got married.” The couple celebrated 25 years in style with two events–one in Chicago and the other on the French Riviera. Read more of their love story and get inspired by the gorgeous details, captured by Aja Hitomi. Wife: Latasha Gillespie Husband: Damion Gillespie Place of Residence: Los Angeles (by way of Peoria, IL[2x]; Olive Branch,MS; San Diego, CA; Singapore; and Seattle, WA) Anniversary Date: August 1 How did you know your partner was the one? One day, while we were still in the friend zone, we were going to the movies, and generally talking about future life plans…Damion turned to me and said, “I already know you are going to be my wife and the mother of my children. I just don’t know what we are going to do in the meantime.” Although I had no

idea how we would transition our friendship into more, deep down inside I knew he was right. Engagement story: Our original engagement was sweet but uneventful, which is what made our reengagement that much more special. We were in the South of France in summer 2022, and we decided to spend 5 days in Paris. Damion said he was going to arrange a photo shoot for us, but instead he surprised me with a magical proposal in front of the Eiffel Tower. Briefly tell us about your vow renewal experience and how you felt on that day. Our vow renewal was really a love letter to the next generation. We realized that there was an entire generation of young people in our family (including our youngest son) who had never been to a wedding–and we wanted to give them that experience. We wanted to give them transparency in seeing that love takes work, perseverance, and continuous re-commitment, but it is also beautiful and worth fighting for. We hosted two events, which we named Platinum Amour: a big, 250-person wedding in Chicago, followed by a more intimate, 40-person week-long gathering on the French Riviera. Your best/most memorable moment as a married couple so far: This vow renewal! It was beautiful to see the community we created around our love come together and celebrate the past 25 years.

What’s the best advice you received about marriage that you actually use? It’s actually advice that I’ve given myself: Marriage is seasons. Sometimes in autumn things get a little windy and the leaves fall off the trees. Winter can be bitter cold and sometimes icy, but hold out for spring. Spring is an opportunity for rebirth and renewal, where we are continually re-learning each other so that we can soak up the warmth and joy of summer together. VOW RENEWAL

D

DEVON & CHARLES

evon and Chuck first crossed paths in high school, but never spoke. After several chance encounters, in February 2010, they connected again under the most unlikely circumstances. Devon shares, “Philadelphia was in a state of emergency due to a blizzard, and no one was supposed to be outside. However, I found myself in a club celebrating a friend’s birthday.” The two locked eyes and have been together ever since. Chuck says, “Who knew the random blizzard club night would turn into a 13-year relationship/ marriage with 3 daughters.” The couple celebrated ten years of marital bliss with a beautiful vow renewal ceremony, captured by Reem Photography. Wife: Devon Edwards Husband: Charles “Chuck Styles” Edwards Place of Residence: Collegeville, PA Anniversary Date: 11/02/2012 (Vow Renewal date: 11/04/2022) How did you know your partner was the one? Chuck: “I knew Devon was the one, first off, because we spent a long time just genuinely enjoying each other’s company and learning our interests. She brought me peace when I was unsure of my direction. She was a true partner, friend, and wife material to me.” Devon: “I knew Chuck was the one because the more we would spend time together, the more he felt like home. I’ve always prayed for a partner, and as we got to

know one another, I knew that he was my answered prayer.”

Engagement story: Chuck: When we first married in 2012, I was broke! I knew that when I had the opportunity to do it big and give her the ring she deserved, I would. Fast forward 10 years, we have a big family summer vacation in Disney World. I get down on one knee and ask, “Will you marry me again?” The diamonds were dancing thanks to the lights from the fireworks! Devon: In 2010 and 2011, I was very focused on all things bridal, which initially intimidated Chuck, but we both knew our union was the most important thing. We didn't have a traditional engagement, and chose to become man and wife on 11/02/2012. Nine and a half years later, Chuck proposed again at Disney World, and I was overwhelmed with emotion. Briefly tell us about your vow renewal experience and how you felt on that day. Love, excitement, and gratitude were at the forefront. The wedding that we wanted to have 10 years ago was happening. It was a culminating moment that we will always cherish. Vow renewal location and why you chose this particular place: The Rittenhouse Hotel was the perfect location for us because it offered the perfect amount of opulence, comfort, and picturesque scenery, and they have an amazing staff.

Favorite detail: Our favorite detail from the wedding would have to be the décor. It was vibrant but romantic. It really spoke to who we are as a couple: fun, loving, and full of life. Your best/most memorable moment as a married couple so far: Our most memorable moment as a married couple would be our vow renewal. Outside of that, our most memorable moments would be the births of our three beautiful daughters. What’s the best advice you received about marriage that you actually use? The best advice that we received about marriage that we use is to never stop dating one another. Between work, being parents, and the general stress of life, it is vital to be able to have fun together as a couple. VOW RENEWAL

I

BIANCA & DENZIL

t was 2012 during Atlantic City Carnival in a Bare Feet shoe store where Bianca and Denzil first locked eyes. Denzil shares, “I thought she was cute, but I was embarrassed, young, and shy. Little did she know I was eyeing her.”

Our bond grew stronger, and soon, we couldn't imagine life without each other. I knew she was the one, the person I wanted to spend my life with, and here we are today.

The two eventually exchanged numbers that day and talked for a little while after. A year later, the couple tied the knot. Over the course of ten years, they grew their family, moved to two different states, experienced many carnivals, and traveled to destinations that were once dreams. They say dreams don’t work unless you do and because of this, a decade later, Bianca and Denzil are still saying “I Do!”

Denzil and I were engaged in May 2013, and married in June 2013 (with a wedding)! What were we thinking?!

Check out the stunning details of their vow renewal ceremony, captured by YNOT iMages. Wife: Bianca Benjamin-Flanders Husband: Denzil Flanders Place of Residence: Orlando, FL Anniversary Date: June 30, 2013 How did you know your partner was the one? Bianca: From day one, Denzil always took care of things for me! I was always the center of attention for him, and he always made me a priority. Denzil: The day I crossed paths with Bianca was in a humble clothing store in Atlantic City, of all places! I chuckled at the thought, believing I'd found a good match because she wasn't into the glitz and glam. Time, however, proved me wrong, and strangely, I loved it.

Engagement story:

I knew it was going to happen as we went ring shopping, but I didn’t know where or when. We were at a Chinese restaurant with our daughter, and I was talking about something with my head turned. When I turned back to him, he had the ring box open. I mumbled under my breath as he was standing up and said, “You better not get on your knees in here,” as I didn't want to be the center of attention.

architectural personality, ornate finishes, and structures, and The Weylin was breathtaking! Your best/most memorable moment as a married couple so far : Denzil: Being broke without money! When we first got married we truly were building. Bianca: The most memorable moment for me was when we decided to move to Florida. It was so spur of the moment, and everything happened so seamlessly. When I told Denzil I wanted to move he simply said, “OK.” He really takes the “Happy Wife, Happy Life” motto seriously, even when it seems so out of reach. What’s the best advice you received about marriage that you actually use?

Briefly tell us about your vow renewal experience and how you felt on that day. Our vow renewal was so emotional for us! To see our closest friends and family dress up so exquisitely to celebrate us and set that tone of Black love and excellence for our children was an indescribable feeling.

Denzil: A happy wife is a happy life.

Vow renewal location and why you chose this particular place:

Ceremony + Reception Location: Weylin, weylin.com

New York was where it all started. It is the Caribbean melting pot, and in our Caribbean culture you must fete (party)! When we were dating, I spent every weekend in NY partying with my soon-to-be husband, so what better place to do our renewal? As it relates to the venue, we wanted a building with

SAGE ADVICE

RELATIONSHIP GOALS: A Love Story and Sage Advice from Germaine Bolds-Leftridge’s 46-Year Journey of Love, Marriage, and Entrepreneurship

W

hen I think about our journey, one note rings clear: communication. Honest and open dialogue is the rhythm that underlies a resilient and enduring relationship. It's about sharing our dreams, thoughts, and concerns; our goal is to ensure that each word spoken to the other is listened to, thought through, and considered.

Given that no serious relationship is without its ebbs and flows, we have found that allowing each other to grow in his/her own way mitigates the possibility of growing apart. Recognizing and supporting each other's aspirations allows our relationship to survive the challenges, within and without, that inevitably present themselves. Ours is an organic entity in which we’re both evolving and achieving our own goals, and it results in my husband and I looking and pulling in the same direction. In the hustle of life, self-care often takes a backseat. Doug and I advocate for prioritizing wellness as a couple. Whether it's pampering each other or simply taking time to relax together, investing in well-being strengthens our bond and enhances the overall quality of our lives. Overall, we’ve found that gratitude is the melody that maintains a healthy and loving marriage. We cultivate it by expressing appreciation regularly. It's about acknowledging the small and significant moments of joy, creating a positive atmosphere

that reinforces the love and connection between us, and NEVER taking anything for granted. No marriage is immune to challenges, and Doug and I understand the importance of weathering storms together. We face adversity as a team, and we strengthen our marital bond. Through shared resilience, we emerge with a deeper understanding and a renewed commitment to each other. As we navigate our journey of love and life, celebrating milestones and creating lasting memories reinforces the joy and significance of our story as a couple.
