DEAR BRIDES, First and foremost, congratulations on your engagement. The world is opening back up, weddings that were already scheduled for this year are underway, and weddings that were postponed are happening too. Needless to say, I could not be more excited about this issue. It’s summertime and although the livin’ is far from easy, we remain hopeful that weddings are returning to what is a new ‘normal’ for now anyway. No one knows what the future will hold – for weddings or any other kind of life events. We are ecstatic and so happy for you, your groom-to-be, vendors, and the wedding and event industry. For now, with the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine and states reopening, weddings are coming back like a tidal wave. For brides and their grooms, to say the countdown to their wedding days was difficult would be an understatement. We commend couples for their dedication and perseverance – we believe it made them stronger and wiser. I am in love with love. Like all our issues, this one is a homage to love and happiness. As soon as Los Angeles, California reopened, we took off to capture love in full bloom between actress and content creator Jasmine Luv and YouTube creator Corey Barrett. We are thrilled to have the happy couple grace the cover of this issue. Their love is filled with enchanting adventure, whimsy, and so much pride and adoration for each other. We are also celebrating actor Ashley Blaine Featherson’s engagement to Darroll Jenkins. After viewing their engagement photos, we think you will join us in counting down to their wedding day. We’re certain it will be beautiful. As you flip through the pages of the 2021 summer issue, we hope you enjoy what we have curated for you. Be inspired by the love between real couples, the ways in which wedding professionals serve their clients and bring each couple’s vision to life on their big days, the boundless creativity on display by artists in communities across the country, and the information our trusted experts have shared with us and with you. For more inspiration and wedding vendor information, visit our website at www.BlackBride.com, follow us on Instagram @BlackBride1998. Email us at hello@blackbride.com and let us know what you think of the summer issue.

Most of all, I hope this issue reminds you that even while our world is ever changing, love always wins.

Efficacy & Safety of Face Masks During Exercise WRITTEN BY TONEKA ROYAL

W

ith relaxing restrictions, gyms opening, and brides now more than ever wanting to get fit and fabulous for their wedding, the threat of the coronavirus is still present leaving many with questions regarding safety and efficacy of the vaccine and wearing face masks during exercise. Whether you are vaccinated, prefer to wear a mask, or if your gym still requires masks, here are a few health factors to consider. First, it can take time to get used to wearing a mask while exercising, especially during a vigorous workout. Wearing a mask can impair how much clean oxygen you inhale, making them particularly uncomfortable and potentially dangerous for those exerting themselves at a high-level, like running or doing a HIIT workout. For this reason, selecting the proper type of mask with a breathable, moisture-wicking material is important. They allow for proper

its safety, especially with exercise. For most individuals, it's safe to exercise after receiving the vaccine as some may not notice any side effects, while others may feel a little run down or a bit weak. However, there have been reports of more serious side effects, like a high fever, chills, swelling, nausea, and muscle pain. Everyone’s body will respond differently. Depending on the intensity of your symptoms, you may want to do a gentler version of your workout or take a few days off.

It can take time to get used to wearing a mask while exercising, especially during a vigorous workout

airflow, and they enable you to exercise comfortably and safely without risk of higher carbon dioxide retention and increased heart rate during moderate to high-intensity aerobic training. You might also consider exercising outdoors by choosing to go for a run. This will allow you to stay six feet apart and be mask free. Even with gyms practicing increased sanitation and equipment being wiped down, remember that germs, bacteria, and sweat on surfaces can still exist. For this reason, don’t leave your mask lying around. Put your mask in your pocket or carry a small satchel.

Depending on the fabric of your mask, you may want to wash them frequently as face coverings can trap sweat, dirt, and promote growth of microorganisms, which in return can cause acne, rashes, and skin irritation. Keep a few extra masks in your gym bag, so you will never be caught having to re-use a dirty one. You can also use disposable masks, and toss them out daily. COVID-19 VACCINE AND EXERCISE Mask restrictions are easing for people who have received the COVID-19 vaccine; however, with reports of side effects from the injection, it’s common to wonder about the health effects and

In summary, exercise and being physically active helps reduce anxiety, can reduce various chronic diseases, and improve your overall health. So, keep moving! It’s okay to work out while wearing a breathable mask, although exercising outdoors with clean air is preferable. Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), exercising post vaccine is safe. If you are experiencing symptoms, like shortness of breath, dizziness, muscle soreness, chills, or nausea, reduce the intensity of your exercise or rest and recuperate. Listen to your body. Remember that you want to remain as healthy as possible, both physically and mentally, as you prepare for your big day!

your nails than you want. For your walk down the aisle, you want your nails to complement your bridal look and your rings and not be overpowering

Expert Bridal Manicure Tips and Trends by Blayke Jacques

W

hen it comes to the details that matter to a bride, one of the top ones is deciding how to keep her nails picture-perfect for her walk down the aisle. After picking out the wedding gown and deciding on the right hairstyle, choosing the right manicure look is usually next on the list. Not only does a gorgeous manicure on your special day put the finishing touch on your bridal look, but also all eyes will definitely be on your hands from the exchanging of rings to those close up ring shots and cutting of the cake. Atlanta celebrity nail tech, Blayke Jacques shares the latest trends and secrets for keeping those nails photo ready for your big day! CHOOSING THE RIGHT NAIL STYLIST If you want the best manicure, you should be very particular in choosing a nail stylist. Go with someone whose work you admire, and book an appointment with them before the appointment for your big day to be sure 10

B L AC K B R I D E .CO M | Su m m e r 2 0 2 1

that they are a good fit for what you are looking for. Going to a nail salon without doing any research will leave more room for you not getting the manicure you envisioned. CURRENT TRENDS IN BRIDAL NAILS Some of the biggest nail trends I'm noticing are negative space designs. Clients enjoy them because once the nails begin to grow out it is less noticeable. Negative space designs allows for the seamless pairing of multiple colors and gives the nail teach more room to be creative. Classic nude colors are here to stay! A lot more women desire more of a simple look on their nails for their wedding because these colors will not clash with any outfits worn after the big day, such as on her honeymoon. My advice: Stay away from dark colors and loud designs on your wedding day. Going that route, you potentially risk everyone paying more attention to

SETTING YOUR APPOINTMENT To keep your manicure fresh for your special day, schedule your manicure for no more than one to two days before the wedding. If you get your nails done more than a few days out, you run the risk of chipping, breaking, or dull nails. The best way to avoid chipped nails is to do as little work as possible with your hands for the days leading up to your wedding. Be more aware of daily activities you engage in and more delicate than you normally would. Think about wearing rubber gloves while washing dishes or cleaning up. This will greatly decrease your chances of having smudges or chips. WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A NAIL EMERGENCY In an emergency, such as a broken nail, a little nail glue can fix most problems. Definitely see your tech as soon as possible after your wedding though because you do not want that glue on your nail for too long. Blayke Jacques works at his private Atlanta nail salon where he takes on his regular clients, new clients, and private celebrity appointments. He has worked with celebrity clients such as Toni Braxton, Tamar Braxton, Keri Hilson, Keyisha Cole, Lauren Lakes, and Karlie Redd to name a few. icole and David’s relationship has evolved for more than a decade! Their story started when Nicole decided to celebrate a friend’s birthday at a nightclub. David spotted her in line, and they locked eyes. Nicole later asked for his number, and they’ve now travelled the world together. After you see their engagement shoot by Anée Atelier, we think you will agree that Nicole and David’s summer wedding is bound to be stunning!

ENGAGEMENT STORY David proposed in Aspen, Colorado during a ski trip together. We got to the top of the ski lift, and as we were about to ski down, he got on one knee and popped the question. It was so perfect, not only because the backdrop was stunning or because skiing is one of our favorite things to do together; but also, the way he proposed was so intentional.

FOR THE GROOM: WALK US BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY We had a New Year’s ski trip planned, so I decided to pop the question then. Most of the best alpine backdrops though were only available via somewhat difficult terrain, and Nicole was still perfecting her turns. But, I discovered one photography station that Nicole could access without risking life and limb! As we ascended the first lift, I suggested we take a few photos together. Then, I unveiled my big plan to the photographer. With the cameraman wielding my iPhone on video mode, I dropped to one knee to share with Nicole how important she was to me. I wanted her to be my ski partner for life, so I asked for her hand in marriage! She said yes and the rest is history.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? We are perfect opposites who come together in the most complementary, interconnected, and interdependent way – the ultimate yin and yang.

WHAT WAS THE THEME OF YOUR SHOOT? I was inspired by 1950s old Hollywood timeless glam and by Slim Aaron’s work. He is known for portraying high society in decadent, opulent settings, but black people were rarely (if ever) the subject of his work. I wanted to take that inspiration and center ourselves at the core.

WERE THERE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS DURING THE SHOOT? This shoot gave us a reason to celebrate, and it was a reminder that our love is not only strong enough to

overcome a worldwide pandemic and social crisis, but also that our love is something to always celebrate.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? I am most looking forward to another adventure we will be able to experience together. I’m also looking forward to our wedding vows. David is a man of few words so when he speaks, his words are always so precise and poignant.

shley and Darroll were both attending a house party in North Hollywood, California when they crossed paths. Eight years later, on September 1, 2018, the two officially became a couple, and now they are preparing to become husband and wife this fall! Read more of their love story, and get inspired by their alluring California engagement session captured by Stanlo Photography.

ENGAGEMENT STORY Darroll surprised me with an anniversary getaway to Santa Barbara, California. We went on a beautiful sunset horseback ride to the beach where he proposed! After, we enjoyed a beautiful celebratory dinner at Bouchon Santa Barbara. The next morning I thought we were going to brunch back in L.A., but he surprised me, YET AGAIN, with a beautiful engagement party with our close friends and family. It was a weekend for the BOOKS, and our wedding will be part DEUX!

FOR THE GROOM: WALK US BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY I originally wanted to propose on a safari in Africa, but we had to cancel our trip due to Covid. So, I had to rearrange my entire plan on the fly, and I landed on Santa Barbara. It actually ended up working out perfectly because Santa Barbara is a special place for us and didn’t require as much travel. Planning the engagement party was the craziest part because we were in the middle of the pandemic. So, it was very difficult to find a venue with enough indoor/outdoor space to socially distance a party for 60+ people. Ashley and I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment at the time, and I was trying to plan this whole weekend while she was sitting right next to me! It was a very stressful couple of months, but it turned out amazing and we had a great weekend

reonna and Dequon both share the same love for their families, friends, and their home state of North Carolina. So, it only made sense that they would meet in North Carolina through mutual friends. But, neither could have predicted falling in love with someone from a rival university! Thankfully, though Breonna and Dequon remain passionate about their alma maters, they’ve been together for four years, shared a sweet family-centered engagement surprise, captured engagement photos with Andre Brown in Miami, and are now a few short months away from celebrating their August wedding day.

ENGAGEMENT STORY

He began expressing his feelings and when he got down on one knee my family was so hype - it was just an amazing moment.

FOR THE GROOM: WALK US BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY I knew I wanted to propose with her family and friends around because she’s family oriented, just like me. Her mom pitched the idea of me tricking her into thinking that we were having an anniversary party for her mom’s brother and his wife. The day finally came, and I was a nervous wreck. The time finally came and, in that moment, I knew I was making God proud.

I remember it like it was yesterday because it was one of the best days of my life. At my uncle and auntie’s 5th year wedding anniversary gathering, my auntie began her thank you speech, and she said, “This event isn’t for us. Could the guest of honor come to the microphone?” I noticed Dequon walk past me - my immediate reaction was a loud, happy yell of “Oh my gosh!”

As we got out of the car, Amanda stopped and took a deep breath to keep tears from coming down. We proceeded into the venue and Snoh Aalegra’s “Find Someone Like You” was playing with a few of our closest family members and friends in attendance. I was able to deliver my speech and successfully get down on one knee, and the rest is history.

ulissa and Christopher found they loved having lunch together at work. After Julissa grew impatient waiting for Christopher to make the first move, she took matters into her own hands and invited him out for drinks. A relationship followed, and after celebrating their engagement while on vacation in Italy, they now eagerly await their June 2021 wedding! See more from their New York City engagement session, captured by Kesha Lambert.

ENGAGEMENT STORY We planned a trip to Italy for June of 2019. We started the day with a tour of the Roman Colosseum, and as we ended the tour at the Roman Forum, Chris asked a tourist to take our photo. Unbeknownst to me, they were recording us. I proceeded to do a head toss to give my hair some volume and as I brought my head back up, he was on one knee. I initially thought he was tying his laces until I saw the jewelry box. He was so nervous that I could barely hear a word he was saying.

FOR THE GROOM: WALK US BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY I’ve always envisioned myself proposing on a beach or yacht, so I planned to wait until we arrived in Sorrento, Italy to propose to her with the most perfect scenery in the background. I didn’t account for my fear of the proposal being spoiled due to Julissa finding the ring. Therefore, during our first full day in Rome, I brought the ring with me on our day tours to find the perfect place that would capture the moment. And, thank God I did. After I proposed, I was able to relax and enjoy the remainder of the trip.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? Our bond as best friends has been such a strong foundation. From the very beginning, we respected and valued one another.

WHAT WAS THE THEME OF YOUR SHOOT? The theme we had in mind was Falling in Love/Springing into Marriage. Due to timing and Covid, we were not able to have a fall photo shoot. Therefore, we chose earth tones and landscape to capture this inspiration.

WERE THERE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS DURING THE SHOOT? Yes, there were many memorable moments but not for the reasons one

would think. We had beautiful weather, but it was extremely windy, and we were concerned with how my hair would hold up.

MICROWEDDINGS Enduring Tradition or Fading Trend?

by Melissa Philippi

36

B L AC K B R I D E .CO M | Su m m e r 2 0 2 1

ike nearly all industries that rely on people gathering, wedding and special event planning was not immune to the fits and starts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Weddings were on again, off again, cancelled, postponed, and re-envisioned. Even the most experienced planners, like myself, were forced to quickly pivot and rethink the coordination of traditional wedding celebrations. Strict CDC guidelines thrust micro weddings, gatherings of 50 or less guests, into the spotlight. From viral social media posts to trending hashtags, the sudden popularity of micro weddings begged the question, are micro weddings an enduring tradition or just another fading trend?

Micro weddings can be the dream wedding you envisioned as a little girl, minus several dozen spectators. Truth be told, micro weddings are not a new phenomenon, nor are they a trend soon to fade. While the bitesized event became more notable during the pandemic, micro weddings have been a steady source of work for seasoned wedding planners. Over the years, couples (and in-laws) who have agreed to a trimmed down guest list have been handsomely rewarded with grandeur and intimacy on the big day. The benefits of micro weddings are significant and for many, they outweigh the challenges of nixing distant relatives, co-workers, and Facebook friends from the guest list. Micro weddings by nature are more intimate, and better attended given that invitees belong to your inner circle of loved ones who will be sure to RSVP. This means little to no money is wasted on no-shows. From a design perspective, micro weddings allow you to go big: amplified floral arrangements, luxurious furnishings, fine dining, and the best entertainment tastefully coordinated by experienced vendors. A reduced guest count means less sacrifice and compromise. Micro weddings can be the dream wedding you envisioned as a little girl, minus several dozen spectators. From where I sit, the only downside to micro weddings is the name itself. To the uninformed layman, the nomenclature is synonymous with micro budget. On the contrary, micro weddings are as much suited for the $130K wedding as they are for the $30K wedding. Micro weddings are less about economics and more about personal preferences. When it comes time to plan your special event, do not thin out your budget, do not settle. Instead, trim the excess from your guest list and get what you want

and deserve. Join the cadre of couplesto-be who for decades have said no to overinflated guest lists and yes to a big event set before a small audience. Melissa Philippi is the founder and lead designer at Finest Planning and Décor Designing, a premier event planning agency in South Florida. For nearly 15 years, the agency has personalized intimate and extravagant events according to clients' tastes, sensibilities, and passions. We believe that if it is worth celebrating, only the finest planning will do. B L AC K B R I D E .CO M

ovid-19 has presented the world and the wedding industry with an array of changes that will forever impact social events as we once knew them. Currently, the floral industry is facing its own set of challenges that many floral designers have little to no control over. Floral shortages, Customs delays, and limited product offerings have definitely created a fine line between those who “do” flowers and true floral designers. At the intersection of creativity and skillset is where you’ll find the designer that will take your budget and vision and pair it with the florals available to create something beautiful and unique for your special day. Traditional wedding flowers are becoming “petals of the past”. The hydrangea/rose 2-piece combo has elevated into an elegant garden, if you will, blending various flower types in clients’ chosen wedding colors. Clients are now opting for mixing dried florals and heavier greenery, such as pampas grass, palm fans, and smilax, which are more readily available and often foraged from the floral designer’s area of town. With smaller guest counts, we are also seeing heavier decorated weddings and elopements, which include romantic candlelit tablescapes and custom steel fabrications, that allow each wedding to have its own unique vibe and design.

Your Wedding Day Florals Post Covid-19 by Leneille Moon

So how does one hire the perfect floral designer for their special day? There are four qualifications that true floral designer encompasses: professionalism, creativity, flexibility and style. Verify that they have a business license with your state, check their reviews on Google/ wedding sites, and let your wedding planners vet them thoroughly to see how they operate pre-and-postevent. Use their website gallery and social media accounts to see their previous event images to see the variety in their work.

Photography by Flex Focus Photography

Further, is your florist able to speak with you to discuss your vision? Setting up an appointment for a design consultation is essential to ensuring everyone is on the same page creatively and aligned in terms of budget. During your consultation and after, florists may also be able to give you some ideas for elevating your wedding venue. Finally, your prospective floral designer should have a style that pairs well with you as a couple. For example, some designers love textures and bold colors, while others love moody and boho style. Find the florist whose style matches yours! With couples spending more time at home, they are relying heavily on social media outlets, like Instagram and Pinterest, for décor inspiration. Floral designers now rely on couples’ wedding planners to educate them on current pricing, availability, and how their vision can match their post Covid-19 budgets. We encourage our clients to focus on the most photographed areas of their weddings to accent those areas with florals and candles to ensure their money is well spent.

Leneille is the Creative Director and lead floral designer for Special Event Factory, a floral design studio based in Roswell, Ga. When she is not designing luxury events across the Metro Atlanta areas and beyond, she is homeschooling her four beautiful children ages 5-18. Due to her ability to blend various floral textures and colors for weddings and social events, her designs have been featured in many global and national publications. B L AC K B R I D E .CO M

of sunshine

A

Ray of Sunshine is a vibrantly gorgeous wedding styled shoot, and it’s a true celebration of summer love. Inspired by the Pantone 2021 Color of the Year, Illuminating, planner and coordinator Tira Lynn of Tira Lynn Events created this shoot to show couples that an event can be bright, bold, flirty, and elegant. “We incorporated fun elements to shoot, such as the bicycle adorned in a variation of yellow florals. We added cake popsicles and bright cocktails from a local non-alcoholic mixer company based in Baltimore, MD. Beau Décor did not skip a beat, as they balanced the florals with other added colors, such as corals, pinks, and orange. The tiered cake, provided by Cakes by Lala, was positioned outdoors and stood alone where its base was covered in yellow florals.” The bride wore elegant, yet simple wedding gowns from Elite Secrets Bridal, and the groom wore a gray suit from Christopher Schafer Clothier with subtle touches of yellow in his tie. ctress and content creator Jasmine Luv and her fiancé, YouTube creator Corey Barrett, know a thing or two about love finding you when you least expect it. And not just any type of love, but one with the divine, transformative power to heal broken pasts and transcend fear. Barrett never dreamed that he would meet someone who would make him totally change his stance on marriage and kids, “I was scared, but I knew that God would not steer me wrong.” Two years after Jasmine made the first move, the two are now preparing to walk down the aisle in just a few days. The couple behind the popular YouTube channel Luv N Slim sat down with us to discuss the beauty of transparency, making the decision to share a less prevalent view of relationships with the world, and their plans for the future.

caught it, I reeled it in, and the rest is history! Candice: At what point did you realize that what you had was special? Corey: I usually post and get off social media so for me to even notice her DM that day was crazy. We met on the 8th floor of our building, and she was even more beautiful in person. By the third date, I knew she was something special, and had this glow about her. I had never felt this way before. Jasmine: We were asking each other questions early on, and he said he did not see himself getting married. But we kept seeing each other because it was just something about him. He was so sweet! When we went on a trip to Hawaii, I looked into his eyes, and I knew then that he was my soulmate.

Candice: How did you two meet? Jasmine: We lived in the same apartment complex in June 2019. I walked in the gym, saw him working out and thought, “Okay, he’s really cute!” My brother was in L.A. visiting and going to the gym a lot, so I was telling him about the guy I saw. He said, “Oh, that’s Tall Guy’s Car Reviews. He’s a YouTuber.” Later, I went to his Instagram page, looked around, and decided to go ahead and send him a DM since it looked like he was single. I threw out the bait, he

Corey: God pretty much tied her up in a bow and gave her to me. It was crazy because I never grew up seeing a good example of a relationship and then when I met her, she was perfect for me. I was scared, but I said if you want marriage and kids then okay! I knew that God would not steer me wrong. Candice: I saw the proposal video that has gone viral, and it was so romantic! Corey tell us about how you popped the question, and what was the planning process like?

Corey: I have to give a huge shout out to her manager, Brandon, because he helped me out a lot. I just had an idea and he brought it life. She’s such an FBI agent so it was difficult hiding the ring and keep everything a secret. Candice: Jasmine, did you have any clue that Corey was going to propose? Jasmine: I knew that eventually he would propose. That day, when I saw him in the suit I just knew because he never wears a suit. Then, he whispered in my ear and said, “It’s time.” Candice: Do you have a scheduled date night? What do you like to do for fun? Jasmine: Our day is Sunday. We lay in the bed and watch movies, eat bad, and reflect on our busy week. We always make time for each other as much as we can. Candice: How has it been planning a wedding, on top of balancing love, and life in general during a pandemic? Jasmine: For us, trying to lock in a venue due to COVID-19 was the most difficult. Many people were not in the office, and we were not able to go and tour venues. It slowed the process a lot. Also, some family members still will not be able to attend because they are not comfortable with traveling, and we totally understand that.

B L AC K B R I D E .CO M

67

Candice: You have a popular YouTube channel. How has it been sharing your life and relationship online? What’s the message about love and relationships that you want viewers to receive? Corey: When it comes to Luv N Slim, from the beginning we wanted to share a view of a real relationship, nothing oversaturated or selling toxicity. It’s always been enjoyable because we’re not chasing views or what’s trending. We are just being the real us. We do not just put up the wins, we put up the losses too. Jasmine: It’s like going to work with your best friend. It makes us go out and do new things like when we went to Hawaii and swam with the manta rays. It gives us more of a reason to have fun together. It’s just black love. Candice: Your big day is coming up this weekend! What is going to make your wedding day special? Are you going alltraditional or adding in your own special touches? Jasmine: We went non-traditional. If I had to categorize it, I would call it a fairytale. Candice: How do you define as success as a couple? Corey: Everyone has their own insecurities and fears, and we’ve always been transparent about them.

There have been times where the sun is coming up and we are still trying to hash things out to find a solution to a disagreement. Candice: What goals will you be striving for as husband and wife? Corey: To always be faithful and respectful. I know enough about life to know that this is special and worth cherishing. I have met someone so special that it overwhelmed my fears about getting married and having kids. I know God’s got us. She was a part of the plan that God had for me and for us, and we want to share our journey with the world. Jasmine: We want to show the world that this is attainable. We have gotten so many messages about how we have inspired other couples to renew their relationships, and that continues to motivate us to share our relationship with the world. 72

It was a pleasure chatting with the future Mr. and Mrs. Barrett! It’s not often that you can feel the authenticity of a couple’s love after just one conversation. We wish them many years of wedded bliss and continued success on and off the screen! Dara Adams on style inspiration... “I was inspired by the relaxed yet refined taste of west coast weddings. My desire was to feature looks that were just as effortlessly beautiful as the scenic Bel-Air surroundings. The stunning and romantic Bel-Air Bay Club provided the perfect inspirational backdrop for the cover shoot. I intentionally selected gowns that had minimal embellishments to bring the focus to the design of the garment and beauty of the bride. My mission for this shoot was to showcase an alternative style aesthetic for Black Bride to inspire Black Women to consider various styles for their wedding days. It was an honor shooting with the long standing, esteemed publication”.

mina and Deon met in 2013 on the campus of the University of Miami. Deon was a sophomore football player and Amina was a senior communications major interning with the Athletics Department. The two began as friends where they communicated through social media. After exchanging numbers, they took their friendship offline. After dating for seven years, the lovely couple tied the knot in a gorgeous, tropical glam Miami wedding captured by Stanlo Photography.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? What makes our love special is that it’s us! It’s goofy, honest, vulnerable, and challenging in the best way possible.

ENGAGEMENT STORY: In July of 2018, Deon proposed that we plan a couples’ trip with our friends to Costa Rica. We bought our flights and found a beautiful Airbnb with an unforgettable view! One night after dinner, Deon started making a speech about new beginnings, and if you know him, you know he doesn’t do speeches, so I was a little confused. I turned around, and he was down on one knee! I was speechless, but had never felt more excited! 76

FROM THE BRIDE: Surprisingly, my wedding day was filled with zero stress. I checked out of trying to control the details of the wedding and decided to be present with my husband and to savor every single moment.

FROM THE GROOM: The only thing that made me a bit anxious was having to say my vows in front of all of our guests. I’m not much of a public speaker, but it felt great being able to share with my wife just how much she and our relationship means to me.

YOUR BEST/MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: We made a grand reception entrance to Pop Smoke’s “Welcome to the Party,” and it literally felt like we were entering a concert.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL: Our DJ, DJ BoWeezy kept the party jumping! Also, the cold sparkler machines brought the whole tropical glam vibe together.

ADVICE FOR A BRIDE/GROOM ON THEIR WEDDING DAY: Your wedding day will fly by. Savor every moment.

Janeen Trederick O

n March 7, 2016, Janeen was visiting a restaurant where Trederick was the owner. Upon realizing there was only fried food on the menu and wanting to stick to her diet, Janeen decided to leave. As she was walking out, Trederick was walking in and asked her why she was leaving. After she explained to him her reasons, he saved the day! The couple has been together ever since, and they walked down the aisle together exactly five years from the day they met. Check out their illustrious white and gold affair in Miami, Florida captured by Stanlo Photography.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? It’s real, raw, and unapologetic. Our bond is unbreakable, and we make the best team.

ENGAGEMENT STORY: On September 27, 2020, we went out to dinner at Little Alley Steak. Trederick went to the restroom and took so long that I started to wonder what he was doing in there. He comes back and next thing I know he is down on one knee asking me to be his WIFE!

FROM THE BRIDE: My wedding experience was so peaceful and happy. I woke up in the Presidential suite overlooking the yacht we were about to elope on listening to gospel and R&B music. I was laughing and crying tears of joy because I was so thankful to God. I also had the best bride squad and glam squad.

YOUR BEST/MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: Trederick said his vows from the heart, and it was the first time I heard him express his love and appreciation in front of the world. It was perfect!

WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN YOUR CHOICE: Entrance to the Reception: Our wedding song was “You” by Jesse Powell. When I listened to the song, I got so emotional because it told our love story. When I played it for Trederick, he got emotional and told me his uncle used to perform that song all the time. I knew then THIS was our wedding song!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL: The ceremony décor and set up was my FAVORITE! Our custom chuppah on the top platform of the four-story yacht was amazing!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE? Trederick has always worked so hard never really taking time for himself, so I’m looking forward to traveling the world together as we continue to build our empire and create generational wealth/knowledge for our children.

ADVICE FOR A BRIDE/GROOM ON THEIR WEDDING DAY:

Plan ahead and set a monthly budget. Be selective with your guest list. Choose a great Bridal Squad and planner so you can be free to prepare. Take it all in on your big day because it goes by so fast!

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO INCLUDE ANY OTHER INTERESTING ANECDOTES FROM YOUR BIG DAY! Since Trederick gave me my dream wedding, I gifted him with a 2017 Schaefer Yacht at the ceremony!

Nana Kwadwo

uring Memorial Day weekend 2015, Nana and Kwadwo stood on opposite sides of the aisle as a bridesmaid and groomsman. After eagerly agreeing to spend time together throughout the wedding weekend, their first date included a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and dinner. Five years later, Nana and Kwadwo stood at the top of the aisle again - this time as the bride and groom - and celebrated their own intimate wedding day, captured by YNOT iMages.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? Faith is a big part of our relationship; it has strengthened the love we have, and the grace we extend to each other.

88

She was so caught off guard and filled with tears of joy. I didn’t have to say much, but my proposal was met with an excited “yes”.

FROM THE BRIDE: After changing our plans due to COVID, and changing our ceremony location due to heavy rain, I was excited and anxious to walk down the aisle and officially be Mrs. Fosu.

FROM THE GROOM: I’m grateful that we decided on a micro wedding because of the intimacy. The day of the wedding, I felt pure joy. I was finally able to marry the woman I love and cherish.

ENGAGEMENT STORY:

YOUR BEST/MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT:

The weekend that I proposed was the same weekend that Nana’s cousin and his wife were married. I asked them for the opportunity to propose to Nana the day after the wedding at a family gathering. I planned the proposal so that all of her family from out of the country and locally would be present. In secret, I also invited our close friends to drive in as an additional surprise.

Our first look and being able to interact with all of our guests during the reception. Our microwedding gave us the opportunity to take in all of the love and support around us.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL: The booklet that our wedding designer/ planner created to hold the program, seating chart, and custom masks was a great keepsake. The ceremony music played by the violin trio, the food and cake were five-star; everything was perfect.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE? We’re looking forward to building a cohesive family unit and crushing our goals with one another’s support.

ADVICE FOR A BRIDE/GROOM ON THEIR WEDDING DAY: Be present, and don’t focus on anything that will ruin your joy.

n 2014, Felisha and Bernard met at a recording studio in Atlanta, Georgia. As musicians, they connected over their love of music and soon discovered an undeniable chemistry. After more than five years of dating, they tied the knot in a chic Los Angeles wedding ceremony. Read more of their love story and check out the details of their gorgeous affair captured by Jarrod J. Photo.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? Very rarely do you meet someone you truly connect with in every way. We’re best friends first. We always joke about how we like each other just as much as we love each other. We keep our friendship as strong as our romance.

ENGAGEMENT STORY: We flew to New York for New Year’s Eve. Harv took me to my favorite restaurant that had just opened. He dropped to one knee and proposed to me in front of all of my family and friends. It was epic!

It was the most beautiful day! I couldn’t wait to marry my best friend. I thought I would be nervous, but I think I had been anticipating this day for a while. I didn’t want to spend one moment not enjoying the most important day of my life.

YOUR BEST/MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: Bride: Walking down the aisle and seeing his face. Groom: Watching her walk down the aisle. She looked so beautiful!

WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN YOUR CHOICE: Our wedding song was the soundtrack of The Notebook. We both love that movie and felt that the instrumental said so much without any words at all.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL: The flowers were perfect! They were everywhere! It was gorgeous, and the attention to detail was impeccable.

or Sheena and Carlos, love found them when they least expected it. The two met in New Orleans while they were both on a trip with friends. Ever since that day, the couple has been inseparable for the past five years. Fall in love with their love story and the details of their magical, black and white wedding ceremony captured by Second Shots Photography

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? The spiritual connection we share is unmatched. Before we met, I think we both had a sense of doubt about the future, but having each other makes us feel as if we can do anything.

ENGAGEMENT STORY: I planned a surprise 60th birthday party for my mom, and the entire time Carlos and my mom were planning our engagement! The night of the party, after he proposed, she hugged me and said,“You surprised me, and I surprised you.” One of the best nights of my life.

FROM THE BRIDE: I think I was the calmest any bride has ever been, mostly because I knew I was making the right

decision. I was enjoying the moment. The wedding itself was beautiful, and everything turned out better than expected.

FROM THE GROOM: I was very hands-on during the planning process and had to monitor my wife’s spending, but everything came out beautiful just as I expected! I woke up knowing I was going to spend the rest of my life with the woman of my dreams.

YOUR BEST/MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: One was the look on Carlos’ face when he saw me enter the room. It made my heart smile and was confirmation that I was marrying my soulmate. The second was the father/daughter dance. My father passed away two months after our wedding, so being able to share one of the most precious days of my life with him was a blessing.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL: The décor was amazing! The wedding cake was beyond anything we could have ever dreamed of. We had an amazing singer by the name of David Michael Watt. My husband had an entire reception dance routine that completely caught me off guard but was so much fun.

n 2011, Ja’nisha and Reginald met while working together at the same car dealership. Fast forward three years and a career change later, and Reginald called Ja’nisha to ask her to join him for lunch. Thankfully, Ja’nisha agreed because they’ve been together ever since! On March 14, 2021, Ja’nisha and Reginald celebrated their classic and romantic wedding day at the Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel in their home city of Charlotte, North Carolina. They are proud to have worked with an entire team of African American wedding professionals to bring their day to life, and we’re thrilled to share the images captured by Reem Photography!

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? Our relationship still feels as exciting as it did 7 years ago, and there is no hiding who we really are from one another. We accept and love each other unconditionally.

ENGAGEMENT STORY: It was New Year’s January 2020. We decided to stay in and have a private chef prepare dinner, drink champagne, and watch old black and white

movies all night (one of our favorite things to do together). After dinner and once the ball dropped, he calmly got on one knee and proposed. It was perfect because it was laid back and just us in the moment.

FROM THE BRIDE: Elana Walker, our wedding planner, was a huge part of me having the best wedding experience. On the day of the wedding, I felt calm, at peace, and excited to start my new journey with my husband.

FROM THE GROOM: The day could not have been more perfect. My wife did such a great job of planning, I was shocked at how nice it all was. I was at complete peace because my new bride is also my best friend, and she definitely adds value to my world.

YOUR BEST/MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: We cleared the room and had a dance and a few moments alone once the night was over.

Justice Damian

n October 2016, it was love at first sight when Justice was waiting for the elevator after returning from a doctor’s visit and heard, “What’s that on your arm?” in reference to her Band-Aids. She turned around and saw Damian. The two exchanged numbers, and just a few months later they were officially a couple. After four years of dating, they became Mr. and Mrs. in a stunning Malibu ceremony captured by Rene Zadori Photography.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LOVE SPECIAL? From the moment I laid eyes on him, I felt like my soul had been awakened. It is like we have known each other a lifetime although it’s only been four years.

ENGAGEMENT STORY: I came home from work and noticed there were new presents under the Christmas tree. Jokingly I told Damian, “Let’s open presents!” He showed me a small, medium, and large gift box, and told me to choose two. The one I did not choose would go back to the store. He wanted to rely on my intuition to determine if it was the right time or not. I chose the smallest and the medium boxes. When he opened the small box, there was a ring. He got on

112

one knee and made the most beautiful speech ever, and of course I said YES!

FROM THE BRIDE: We wanted to have a fairytale dream wedding, and we got just that. I felt anxious, but once I saw Damian I immediately felt at ease and was reminded of why we just flow.

FROM THE GROOM: It was like a fairytale in real life, and I felt euphoric. I was excited to finally see my bride. She looked like a Disney princess!

YOUR BEST/MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: I gave my mom an art piece that I had an artist paint of her and I in our wedding dresses. There were definitely waterworks!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAIL: The flowers! I love Butterfly Floral, and I knew they would be my wedding day florist a month into Damian and I dating.

WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN YOUR CHOICE: “Best Part” by Daniel Caesar. He is the best part of my life, and we still get so excited to spend time together.

TRAVEL

W Top 5 Destinations for Travel This Summer WRITTEN BY STEPHANIE KILSON-THOMAS

118

B L AC K B R I D E .CO M | Su m m e r 2 0 2 1

ith the emergency approval of COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson last year, a lot of us are scratching the itch we have had all 2020 to travel, and the world is welcoming us with open arms! Many of our favorite destinations have re-opened for travel for both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers. Though the CDC is still requiring a negative COVID-19 test prior to returning to the United States, destinations have been accommodating by providing COVID-19 tests (some resorts offering them at no cost to guests) to travelers whose home countries require a negative test prior to their return. the wind in your sail. You don’t want a simple decision, like where to stop for a bathroom break or where you are going to eat, turn into a full-blown civil war. Road trips can also create disharmony, add stress, and tension to what is otherwise meant to be a good time.

FRENCH POLYNESIA

On May 1, 2021, French Polynesian Islands reopened for tourism. Islands, like Bora Bora and Tahiti, are our favorite destinations to travel to for beautiful black sand beaches, overwater bungalows, and whale watching. Take a helicopter tour for an aerial view of Moorea Island, the Heart Shaped Island of French Polynesia, or do a full day excursion touring Tahiti from end to end. Keep in mind, French Polynesia is still taking things slow and steady. They have a curfew in place through June 1, 2021 (though expected to be extended), between 10:00 pm and 4:00 am.

GREECE

The recent announcement of Greece allowing entry for permanent residents of the United States was a song to our soul. A definite top 5 destination, Greece is home to many beautiful resorts, including Stella Island Luxury Resort, Cavo Tagoo Resorts, and Dandrea Lagoon. Let us not forget, Greece is one of the most Instagram worthy destinations to visit! Bordered between the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, Greece has the perfect blue waters, white sand, historical architecture, and amazing food that will make you want to never leave!

TURKS & CAICOS

Turks & Caicos Islands, a favorite destination for celebrities, is also a top destination for couples for their honeymoon or milestone anniversaries. Located about 15 minutes away from Providenciales International Airport, Taylor Bay Beach has private beach front villas with concierge service, housekeeping, and private chefs. Grace Bay, right in between Leeward Settlement and The Bight Settlement, is where you will find most of the resorts (some all-inclusive) in Turks & Caicos. Enjoy adventures such as the Love Buggy Providenciales Island Tour, stopping for lunch at the Conch Shack, or rent a luxury yacht for a romantic sunset cruise with dinner for two.

MEXICO

Mexico will always be a top destination because the country is more than just Cancun. Resorts are opening in Costa Mujeres, just 45 minutes north of Cancun, and there is still plenty of land to build many, many resorts there. Since Mexico is one of the few countries that does not require a negative COVID-19 test to travel there, travel never quite stopped for those who were ready to get away, and we saw the rise in popularity of Tulum in 2020. Other notable, up-andcoming areas in Mexico that you would be remiss if you did not visit are Isla Holbox, Isla Mujeres, and Punta Mita.

If your next trip includes these top five destinations, whether you are vaccinated or not, be sure to wear your mask and social distance; it is still required in most countries.

Grenada

Grenada is a gem, and with the new all-inclusive Royalton Grenada opening on June 1, 2021, it is definitely going to bring your attention to the Spice of the Caribbean for your next destination. Jet Blue, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines all have direct flights into Grenada from New York (Jet Blue), Miami, Charlotte (American) and Atlanta (Delta). You are one (or two) flight away from embarking on a beautiful vacation on the island of Grenada, enjoying great food and excursions, including river tubing, sunset catamaran cruises, and dune buggy tours. Do not forget to visit the world-famous Underwater Sculpture Park while you are there!

AFTER THE AISLE

Romancing the Road

by Mary Chatman

S

eeing a couple riding off into the sunset is so romantic. After a wedding, it is the perfect ending to the ceremony. There is something special about watching the couple ride off into the sunset with streamers, flowers, and cans in tow. It doesn’t matter if it is a trusty Honda, a Bentley, or a brand-new Mercedes stretch limousine. There is something sexy and romantic that sends chills and thrills to even the least cupid-struck among us. Hitting the road together is a great time to create intimacy and ignite passion. It is just the two of you and the open road, so go ahead and get frisky, by all means let the flirting begin. Hitting the open road with the love of your life can be fun and exhilarating. It’s just like anything else; it’s what you make of it. If you get it right, you will feel just like many lovebirds - you will find the call of the open road simply irresistible. 1. Decide on a destination as a team. Surprise trips are no fun if it is not something that your beloved enjoys. Remember that anticipation is very important and should be a shared experience. Each time you plan a road trip together, you will get better and better at picking a location that you both will agree on. You may want to keep the first trip short and sweet, and see how it goes. You can always increase the distance for your next road trip together. 2. What to pack. Load up the CD player with your favorite oldies. You know, the ones that made sparks fly from the start. Fill a cooler with ice for your beverages and pack a picnic basket with all of your favorite goodies. Don’t forget to order a “Love Life Design” romantic create-it-yourself tote bag for

Hold on a minute…before the sweet phase turns sour, there is one thing to keep in mind; the road is the perfect breeding ground for arguments. It is not like being on a plane, bus, or train with people all around. It’s just the two of you with a console between you. Don’t let it hit you and blow out the wind in your sail. You don’t want a simple decision, like where to stop for a bathroom break or where you are going to eat, turn into a full-blown civil war. Road trips can also create disharmony, add stress, and tension to what is otherwise meant to be a good time.

use once you arrive at your destination. Pick up Honeymoon Table Topics to Go or Conversation Cards, which are perfect for the days you may end up stuck in the room and want to find yourself in a state of laughter. These decks of interesting topics and thought provoking funny questions are a great way to get you both asking and answering questions you never asked each other before. They will also steer you clear of questions that may stir up the calmest ocean and keep you laughing and storytelling for as long as you can stand it!

have to be in a hurry, so make sure you have the time and are not rushing to get home before the trip even starts. Allow time for stopping by outlets for a little shopping or window shopping, whichever you prefer. You may just want to pick up a treasure to later remind you of the trip. Pull over and watch a sunset together and smell the roses - just breathe. Romance thrives on time. Make the best of it. Go ahead…pull over and have a make out session. Just make sure it is at a welcome center and just a tease please, because I don’t want you to get a ticket for indecent exposure.

3. Don't rush. Remember this is a fun, romantic ride into the sunset. You don’t

4. Keep the line of communication open. Take advantage of the open road in a positive way. Keep the line of communication open. Listen to your partner with an open heart and mind. Open up and share your own feelings too. Do not dictate to each other. Resist the temptation to nag and complain. Even if the navigator occasionally gets things wrong, it's better to bite your tongue and take a detour. Why? Because you will get things wrong once in a while too! Patience and consideration are key, and if you've followed Tip 2 above, you've got the time to enjoy the side trip instead of ranting about your soulmate's inability to read a map. 5. Keep a journal, and take pictures. Recalling shared experiences is not only romantic, it strengthens relationships in the long term. You can even create

a blog about your adventures. Who knows, it may inspire other couples to hit the road. Make up your mind to enjoy every moment. Having the right attitude can make all the difference while romancing the road together!

6. Book a spa treatment in advance. Treat yourselves to a sexy his and her massage while you’re away. There is an even greater excitement booking a relaxing massage away from your area. Check out spas before you leave for your road trip. Try to find a spa that has a sauna or private pool to enjoy prior to your massage. 7. Hide a love note or a small gift. This little romantic gesture, once discovered, will have anyone smiling with glee. Be sure to eat meals on a regular schedule to avoid grouchiness. Once the bickering starts, it can easily lead to knock-down, drag out arguments that are hard to recover from during your short time on the road. Eating meals on a consistent schedule and getting enough rest are the best defenses.

Happy

Trails!
