FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

DEAR BRIDES, As always, first and foremost, if you are a bride-to-be, congratulations on your engagement! As we continue to celebrate 25 years as a company this year, I’d like to thank all of the couples who have shared their beautiful love stories on the pages of Black Bride Magazine. We are proud to be a part of your journey in love and life. And I also have to thank our team, all of our advertisers and industry supporters, and friends who have helped to make this magazine the go-to resource for brides of color. May 11, 2023, marked the end of the federal COVID-19 PHE declaration. We’re outside, family! Love is in the air, and there is one thing we know for sure: Weddings have the power to bring people together. I hadn’t been to a wedding in three years. When our cover girl Akilah, then Releford now Akilah Gould, personally invited me to her wedding, I felt called to be there. I later had to confess though that I really wanted to attend the Martha’s Vineyard-themed wedding on the coast of Los Angeles all along! Deep down in my spirit, I realized I was yearning for something beautiful and magical. I’m not alone by any stretch of the imagination: Akilah’s wedding received 31.5 million views from her TikTok community who had been anticipating her wedding day. Akilah is the CEO of Mary Louise, a $1 million natural skincare company founded in her dorm room while attending Howard University. Inside, be sure to read her love story and journey to the aisle with Roc Nation executive Andrew Gould, written by Kennedi LéShea. Besides the beautiful love stories and real wedding inspiration inside, we know brides-to-be love to check out the “Bridal Fashion Trend Report”. We bring it to you straight from the runways during New York Bridal Fashion Week in March with our Fashion Editor, Dara Adams. Be sure to check it out as you peruse through the pages of this issue. As you flip through each story, we hope you are inspired by the content we’ve curated and find inspiration to help you plan your dream wedding. We honor the amazing wedding and event vendors who help to bring wedding visions to life, especially now in this ever-changing world.

These are a few of my favorite things! Practical housewares, good scents from perfume to candles, and of course fashion. It’s all about igniting the senses. Follow us on: IG: @BlackBride1998. Email us at: hello@blackbride.com and let us know what you think of this issue.

BEAUTY BEFORE THE BEAT:

12 MONTH SKIN CARE ROUTINE FORFlawless WEDDING DAY SKIN BY AUTUMN MARIE

Congratulations Beautii you're engaged! As you begin to dive deep into the wedding world of table linens, dress silhouettes, and typography suites, you’ll quickly realize planning intentional details is what truly makes your wedding day unforgettable. But in the midst of all of your wedding planning, don’t forget about self care. And for the sake of your bridal beauty goals, skin care! Taking the time to develop an intentional skin care regimen prior to your wedding day is the key to ensuring your bridal makeup is as picture-perfect as you envisioned. Each beauty treatment leading up to your special moment will aid in the smoothing and rejuvenating of your skin, making it a suitable canvas for a flawlessly beat face. Here is the ultimate beauty timeline to properly prepare your skin for its wedding day debut. 12 MONTHS CONSULT WITH AN ESTHETICIAN Whether you’re just starting your skin care journey or you’re battling with skin related issues, this is the time to start the skin prep process. When it comes to skin care and 12

BLAC K BRI DE. C OM

treating skin care concerns, the earlier you address these concerns the better. This starts with consulting with a professional who can assess your skin and create a plan of action just for you. 6 MONTHS BEGIN FACIALS Your wedding day is six months away. We’re halfway to the finish line and stress may have settled in. This can appear in the form of breakouts. Depending on your skin condition, having hydration, high frequency, or LED light facials can reduce the possibility of breakouts and keep skin clear and healthy. Not only are these facials beneficial to the skin, but they also offer a relaxing experience overall! BEAUTII TIP: If your esthetician recommends more aggressive treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or microneedling, remember this: faster is not necessarily better. What we mean is these treatments need time to work. You will absolutely see a difference

after one or two treatments; however, to effectively treat a concern, skin needs time to respond to said treatment. BOOK A MAKEUP ARTIST When choosing your makeup artist, it's important to not only consider the visual quality of their work, but to also give consideration to how they pay attention to their client’s skin. Talk to your MUA of choice about your skin care regimen and any skin challenges you currently have. Being equipped with this information will help your artist determine the specific makeup and skin care items needed to execute the makeup look you desire.

TRY TO GET A GOOD NIGHT'S REST TO PREVENT UNDER EYE BAGS.

3 MONTHS

1 WEEK

REVAMP YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE

HYDRATE. SLEEP. REPEAT!

Do you have a daily skin care routine? If not, this is the time to start. Professional skin treatments can provide you with the foundation needed for great skin, but your daily skin care routine is what will help you to maintain these results. Be sure to ask your esthetician for the best products to use, based on your skin type and skin history. BEAUTII TIP: We all know a cleanser, moisturizer, and serum are essential to a good skin care routine, but don't forget about your sunscreen! No matter the time of year, applying sunscreen daily can dramatically improve the appearance of your skin. 1 MONTH If you’re accustomed to receiving facials, have one at the beginning of the month. This way you can simply maintain. This is also the time to get any facial waxing done. If you need to get any body waxing done, you can plan to wait until the week before your wedding. And make sure to get a manicure and a pedicure!

It’s finally wedding week! By this time you should see major improvements in the appearance of your skin. Drink lots of water, so the skin can remain clear and have a subtle glow. Try to get a good night's rest to prevent under eye bags. BEAUTII TIP: To prevent any last minute skin related surprises, make sure to have your final beauty treatments before the one week mark. Just in case you have any reactions, your skin can recover before the wedding day.

A formula that conditions and hydrates, this stunning lip includes passion fruit oil, making it not only a gorgeous lipstick choice but a lip health-benefiting one as well!

Merit’s “L’Avenue” is a powerhouse pick with a berry brown color that is lightweight and buildable for any re-applications you might need throughout the night, so it’s a great choice for brides. We love that the color is a universal hue for every shade, and we’re also fans of the “light as air” finish.

PAT MCGRATH SATINALLURE™ LIPSTICK IN “CRIMSON ECSTASY” We all know rocking a bold lip isn’t for the faint of heart, so it's only right to channel a daring makeup essence on your wedding day to make a glamorous splash! The brand’s SatinAllure Lipstick in “Crimson Ecstasy” is an effervescent, bright scarlet red that looks good on every shade. And with its infusion of botanical collagen and satin-shine finish, you won’t have to worry about any touch-ups as the night goes on!

MERIT BEAUTY SIGNATURE LIP IN “APERITIF” Famously worn by beauty icons like Tracee Ellis Ross, a classic red lip can never steer any woman wrong. Merit Beauty has just brought back their signature lip in a luscious red hue and hydrating formula. This buildable soft satin finish lippie is ideal for brides that are into the classics, while still looking to remain in tune with the times.

Their friendship started with them studying together and hanging out in the Chemical Engineering common room with other classmates. Then they became closer in 2016 during their final year of university, when they were elected as president and vice president for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). As the couple prepared for their upcoming summer nuptials, they captured a romantic engagement session with Karimah Gheddai Photography. ENGAGEMENT STORY: In December 2021, Tolbert and I visited his family in Ghana for the Christmas holidays. During our trip, he organized a surprise birthday party for his mom. On December 23, all his family and close friends attended what was supposed to be a birthday celebration. The party started off as intended. We

surprised his mom, feasted on delicious Ghanaian food, and took photos. Then I was asked to join the family to take a family photo. As I walked towards the group of people, there stood Tolbert in front of a beautifully decorated sign which read, “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” He went down on one knee, and he asked me to be his wife, and I happily said, “Yes!” This was one of the most memorable moments of my life, and what made it better was that we shared this special moment with family and close friends, something that we both value and cherish dearly. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? Celebrating our special day with our loved ones. Having our family and friends present to witness our love and commitment to each other is a blessing.

andyce and Patrick found love in the club on August 10, 2019. The two met at a day party at Whiskey Mistress, where Patrick was out celebrating his birthday. He gave Candyce his number, but never asked for hers (he says his pickup game was rusty). Lucky for them, she was trying to expand her network, and figured she’d use it. Timing was not right though to pursue something more, since Candyce was busy setting up her practice. Two years later, Patrick invited her to his house for a post-wedding brunch he was hosting for his friend and the rest is history. In anticipation of their upcoming fall wedding, the couple had a gorgeous engagement session in Atlanta, Georgia, which was captured by Fotos by Fola. ENGAGEMENT STORY: Candyce loves puzzles, so I made her a custom puzzle based on a picture of her. She put the puzzle together, and soon realized a few of the missing pieces were all surrounding her ring finger. When it came down to the final piece, I let weeks go by with nothing.

One night, I told her we were going to swing by her favorite bar after dinner, but I needed to go by the house first because my brother had left my stove on. She didn’t want to go initially, but finally agreed to come. Inside, the puzzle was set up on an easel with rose petals around it, and I had a custom song playing that ended with “I want you to marry me.” I pulled out a small jewelry box that contained the final piece of the puzzle, which revealed the wedding ring I had Photoshopped on her finger. I led her to my roof deck, which had been transformed with roses, candles, and a “Will you marry me?” sign. Knowing Candyce is very close to her mother, I knew I had to have her there. I popped the question and got a lot of giggles and head nods in response, which I took as a yes. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? Celebrating this moment with loved ones. I plan to enjoy every second of a day I didn’t expect to happen and marry a man I would have never believed existed.

THE MAGIC OF Cocktail HOUR: HOW TO UP THE ANTE OF GUESTS’ CULINARY EXPERIENCE ON YOUR SPECIAL DAY BY KENNEDI LÉSHEA

T

he most exciting part of the wedding day for brides and grooms is their ceremony. But for their guests, the reception is where it’s at! During this time of celebration, brides of the modern age are opting to bring back the magic of the cocktail hour. As Chef Derrell Smith puts it, this time “is a tone setter and the precursor of what the evening is going to be.” And the beauty of its comeback is that brides aren’t letting the traditions of cocktail hour menus past guide them as they craft their own menus. Instead, they’re taking inspiration from their own love stories and taste levels to create the appetizer and drink menus of their dreams as well as a complete culinary experience for their guests to rave about.

chefs of today to give you all the details on how to make your cocktail hour menu a one-of-one culinary experience for your special day. Kennedi LéShea: What do you love about cocktail hour?

Chef Justin Robinson: I love that it allows me, as a chef, to become more creative in packing flavor in one bite!

Chef Kayla Greer: I love how casual it is, and I

think it’s the point where the food is a bit more fun. It’s the moment where everybody is in a good mood and in good spirits after the couple just said “I do,” and you get to celebrate with some good drinks and good bites.

KL: As the world of weddings evolve to fit

the more modern and unconventional times, what are some ways brides (and grooms) can modernize their guests’ dining experience through their wedding day cocktail hour menus?

Chef Justin Robinson: Don’t overthink it,

guys! Modern dining is all in the aesthetic, so it may cost a few extra dollars for the plating and presentation—but it will give the modern touch that you are looking for. For example, a simple shrimp and grits can go from country and rustic to modern and chic all in the platter of the dish along with the garnish!

Chef Kayla Greer: Doing appetizers table side

and being able to see the interaction of food being made is next level. And since a lot of people are starting to not want their wedding recorded, that gives a chance for people who still want to record something else to capture.

a lot of people don’t end up eating dinner, so I would try a tapas style [dining experience]. You can get more food into people in a cocktail hour than in a dinner because they’re moving around, and it gets so crazy. If I was [cooking for] a couple where one loves lamb

Chef Derrell Smith: I think

people are being more expressive. The chains are broken because people are seeing themselves more— being able to feel empowered to express themselves genuinely and authentically. I think when you start to see that in culture, food is right behind it. Food is a very easy way to express yourself because it’s so diverse with ingredients and traditions you can introduce to someone by giving them a good meal. I think people are just becoming more empowered to be individuals.

BRIDAL FASHION TREND REPORT BY DARA ADAMS

‘T

he bridal collections presented during the latest occurrence of New York Bridal Fashion Week were refreshingly innovative, embodying a softness that’s perfect for brides who want to wear a wedding gown suitable for spring. The top trends that emerged from this season prioritized the beauty of design, a noticeable shift from the over-decorated and over-detailed dresses of season’s past. The 2024 bride can look forward to seeing wedding styles that feel effortless and contemporary without having to forfeit intricacy.

THE Bold BUSTIER The bridal bustier was once deemed only appropriate for undergarments and a bride’s something special for her wedding night, but it’s now one of the most universally used design trends for bridal fashion. In fact, it’s made a major resurgence for the upcoming spring. The bustier makes a bold statement with its nearly-there appearance. But it also serves as a way to give the bride a perfect fit because it offers structure, support, and a cinched waist. For the bride that wants sex appeal and shape, a bustier bodice is the perfect choice. Left to right, top to bottom: Lee Petra Grebenau, Lihi Hod, Liz Martinez, Amsale, Lihi Hod

Sketched

IN STYLE Bridal gowns are truly a work of art, but a trend we’ve spotted this season is the use of fabrics with line-heavy patterns that resemble drawings and bring an artistic aspect to the overall look of the gown. In a world where embellishments and lace can sometimes favor each other, a wedding gown made of a unique fabric is a simple way to add an elevated level of visual interest to your wedding look.

Blooming

PETALS

Nothing says spring like fresh flowers. We’ve seen floral patterns and small 3D floral embroidery in previous seasons, but this season was all about large and life-like petals. The petal patterns bring texture to the gown, making it a bridal piece that makes a statement. If you are looking for a wedding gown that feels romantic but appears fashion-forward, this trend is the one to try. Take the

PLUNGE The deep V-neckline has returned to the forefront of bridal fashion for the spring ‘24 season. For those not afraid of a daring look, choosing a gown with a dip in the bodice is an immediate way to add a sense of sex appeal to any dress silhouette or style type. While some designers have executed the trend with a more straightforward approach, others have incorporated a lace or sheer panel to also offer modesty. Wrapped

IN RUCHING Ruching continues its popularly amongst designers, and for good reason. The style is not only interesting to the eye, but it also accentuates curves of almost any shape. This season we saw quite a few gowns with chiffon or silk fabrics used to create a wave-like visual effect along the silhouette of the dress. Whether a modern or classic look, the ruching detail will add a touch of difference to any design. From left to right: Lee Petra Grebenau, Ese Azenabor, Lihi Hod, Lihi Hod, Rivini, Nardos

n one fateful night in March 2016, the stars aligned for Kristen and Reggie. At the time, Kristen was finishing up her senior year at Georgetown, while Reggie had just arrived in DC after having recently graduated from Florida Agricultural Mechanical University (FAMU). Kristen was out with friends that night and what started as a dare from her friend, turned into so much more. As soon as Reggie and Kristen started talking, it was like they were the only two people in the room. They quickly discovered that they both hailed from Jacksonville, FL, and had more in common than they could have imagined. In the years that followed, the two built a life together filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. As they rang in the new year on December 31, 2019, Reggie asked Kristen to spend the rest of her life with him. Get inspired by their gorgeously

stunning wedding day, captured by Felicia V. Photography. BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING EXPERIENCE AND HOW THE BOTH OF YOU FELT ON YOUR BIG DAY. INCLUDE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT. Our wedding experience was definitely a journey. We got engaged right before the pandemic and ended up postponing our wedding to a year later, as it was initially supposed to be in September 2021 in St. Augustine, FL. We decided to get married closer to home in Baltimore, MD so that it would be easier for us to plan locally. It had been a while since our family and friends had gathered together, and it was an amazing feeling to be surrounded by so much love and support.

WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: “Collide” by EARTHGANG and Tiana Major9 – We chose this song because it is the perfect backdrop for our love story. The lyrics start off with “Everybody's got opinions on our thing, say we’re flying down a path with no ending.” Certain people in our lives didn’t think we were right for each other, but we didn’t let that interfere with our love for one another. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE? We are most looking forward to building a life together for our family. We are passionate about creating generational wealth and want to leave a legacy that our kids, our grandkids, and their kids will benefit from. We are also looking forward to traveling the world together and creating memories. ADVICE FOR A BRIDE | GROOM ON THEIR WEDDING DAY: Remember that this moment is about the two of you! Don’t worry about the small things that might go wrong. It goes by quickly, so have fun and don’t forget to eat! isa and Kenny initially met in 2001 when they were both attending neighboring high schools. They became good friends, but they never dated. After graduation, life took them on separate paths. The two reconnected in 2016 via social media, and immediately became a couple after a few dates. After five years together, Lisa and Kenny became husband and wife in a black-tie wedding ceremony, captured by Sheronda Seawright Photography. BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING EXPERIENCE AND HOW THE BOTH OF YOU FELT ON YOUR BIG DAY. INCLUDE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT. Something that both of us were passionate about was the decision to support Black businesses throughout our wedding process. All the vendors we chose to use, from the wedding dress designer to photography, videography, DJ, musician, hair, makeup, wedding coordination, and even down to the restaurant for the rehearsal dinner, were owned by an African-American.

(Lisa) My most memorable moments included when we said our vows privately the night before the wedding and when we looked at how elegant our guests were in their gowns and tuxedos. (Kenny) My favorite moment was a tie between the rehearsal dinner where we got to spend the evening with our bridal party, and the after party. It felt so good to get to dance with my wife and all of our friends. WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: Anthony Hamilton – “The Point of it All.” We chose this song because it speaks to us as couple. Life truly wouldn’t be the same for either of us without the other one. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE? We’re currently expecting our first baby boy who’s due in September, and we couldn’t be more excited for this next chapter!

aya and Alex both grew up in Los Angeles, and had mutual friends but didn’t meet until 2017 after connecting on the dating app Coffee Meets Bagel. After their first date, the two parted ways because they both had other plans that night. It turned out that they were going to the same exact concert to see the band Lawrence. Alex spotted Maya at the concert, and after deciding that this was his snooze or lose moment, he went and stood next to her. COVER STORY

& AKILAH ANDREW AN EVER AFTER LOVE

T

“This is my royal wedding!” “I’m locked IN, sis.” “You are my it-girl!”

hese are just a few of the thousands of comments of love and support beauty entrepreneur Akilah Gould received from her 30K+ followers on TikTok alone. Having turned her page into the premiere source of all things wedding inspo in preparation for her big day, the selfproclaimed “21st century Ashley Banks” found her audience while documenting her wedding journey on social media. She managed to do something every content creator hopes to do: build a safe space of community while sharing inspiration that resonated with many.

Her videos from the wedding day alone have amassed well over 1.3 million views. And while others might’ve gotten caught up in the social media hype or the wedding itself, marrying the love of her life was the only thing Akilah cared about.

“The wedding is not the important part of why you’re here; you’re here to marry the love of your life. The beautiful wedding is a part of the story, and it's important—but it's not the reason why you’re here. If Andrew is not here, I wouldn’t be doing any of this.” The Gould’s love story is one filled with shared connection and deep love, and Akilah sat down with us to tell us all about it. After meeting in what she calls “the dark ages” of the 2020 global pandemic through a dating app, the founder and CEO of Mary Louise Cosmetics and the Roc Nation EVP joined together to embark on what would become a blissful journey of true love. “When I met Andrew, I was full-time doing Mary Louise, and I had been single for a while,” said Akilah. “We met in April 2020, so this was peak pandemic in LA when we really

I mean there was literally nothing to do except watch TV, cook, and eat. But it gave us a lot of time to get to know each other. And as devastating as COVID-19 was for a lot of people, I think it was our perfect storm to connect.” Kennedi Léshea: How did you prepare to become the woman of your dreams before you met Andrew? Akilah Gould: I feel like a lot of women put a lot of pressure on themselves to get to what they perceive to be this certain point of “I’ve got it together. Now I’m ready for this next step.” And I feel like, honestly, it’s kind of a waste of time to think that way. There really is no set point when you can just say that. You will forever be evolving and changing. Things can happen simultaneously. You should be growing with your partner—there should be room for individual growth when you find the right person. But I do also think there is work that has to be done in order to get married or take whatever major life step a woman wants to take. For me personally, it was spending time alone. I encourage women, if they can, to live alone for a certain period of time. I think that being alone and being comfortable with yourself is so important before living

with a partner or getting married or any other major life change. You learn to be okay without external validation—to be happy with yourself—and it also gives you a sense of independence. If you turn the key to your own space, I feel like that’s meaningful; there’s no better feeling. KL: Just as they say “it takes a village to raise a child,” it also takes a village to prepare a woman for wife life. How did you prepare for marriage as a wife, and who helped you define wifehood? AG: I don’t think there was a moment where I was like, “What do I need to do to be a good wife?” I knew my mom as a stay-at-home mom, but I also knew her as a career woman as well. Watching her growing up gave me the skills I thought were essential to be a wife. I had a great example with my mom. She is someone who is extremely independent and selfsustaining. I think because Andrew and I had shared backgrounds—both of our dads are physicians and both of our moms are stay-at-home moms—we both fell into what we learned and saw growing up. So, it wasn’t weird for me to do Mary Louise and for me to also be cooking most of the time. We didn’t think it was weird for a mom to be in the house cooking, and we didn’t think that meant she was less of a person. We respected what partnership really means and needs. We were just doing what we saw at home, and it worked. Akilah shared that she and Andrew also went through marriage counseling.

“During my journey to converting to Judaism, we had sessions outside of my conversion that were more of marriage counseling,” said Akilah, adding, “I think I can speak for Andrew when I say that they really made me appreciate things about him that aren’t top of mind all the time.” The new Mrs. Gould converted to Judaism on her own merit after experiencing Andrew’s traditions, like Shabbat dinners and cooking challah together, during their dating process. KL: I know you converted to Judaism before marriage as your husband is Jewish. What was that process like, and why was it important for you? AG: It took a little over two years of studying. I grew up in a really Jewish neighborhood in LA. So, when I met Andrew, he helped me kind of revive the things I learned from childhood when it came to Judaism. I learned how to make a challah during the pandemic, so Friday night Shabbat dinner became a really big thing for me to do. I’d make a challah, a roast chicken, I’d do the sides, we’d light the candles, we’d recite the prayer. At the time, I was never opposed to converting, it just wasn’t a thought. It was nothing Andrew ever asked of me either. But it was something I believe brought us closer during the pandemic, and I think having an appreciation of a beautiful culture and religion, and sharing that brought us together on a really strong, emotional level. The steps that it took were so beautiful and really made the process amazing for me. KL: How does your newly shared faith play a role in your marriage? AG: Rituals like Shabbat dinner and Friday night services at the synagogue play a really key role in our relationship and keep us closer. It’s something that we look forward to at the end of the week, and it’s something that we feel brought us closer together. I think religion in general has the power to elevate a couple’s relationship. It goes back to the saying of “putting God first” in your relationship, and it being important. Akilah noted that their shared spiritual connection through Judaism brought a sense of self-reflection to her that didn’t complete her, but rather added to her identity: “It added on another layer of who I was as a person. I was already comfortable with who I was, but I think that Judaism amplified in a great way all of the things that I already knew about myself.” KL: In a world where women are still being told what to do and how to do it—even in their own BLACK BR IDE .C OM

love stories and weddings—documenting how you managed to plan the wedding of your dreams seemed intentional. Why was it important to you? AG: It was important for me because it can act as a time capsule, and that’s one of the positive things about social media. These are videos I can potentially show my kids about documenting my experience with wedding planning that my mom or grandmother may not have been able to do even though they could have enjoyed wedding planning just as much as me. Akilah’s wedding aesthetic, which she calls “Coastal Classic,” has served as a pin on the wedding mood boards of those who gleaned from her content. Inspired by the couple’s first trip to Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard together where they “really fell in love with each other,” Akilah recalls traveling in the town and thinking, “This could be a really interesting theme to do—bring Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard to LA.” So, she did. Filled with a color scheme rooted in the perfect dusty blue with nautical vibes and a beachy theme, the stunner of the wedding weekend wasn’t just her perfectly crafted floral arrangements filled with hydrangeas. Instead, Akilah’s epic wedding gowns took center stage too. After waiting too long to dress shop, she shared, “I actually found my dress at my first appointment, and it was the last dress that I tried on. It was something they pulled from the back, and when I saw it on the hanger with the bow, it looked very matronly. But I tried it on, and I thought it was so chic.” Akilah referenced ‘90s cult movie classic The Parent Trap’s iconic wedding photoshoot scene as the feeling she got when looking at the Vera Wang gown when trying it on for the first time: “I feel like she could have designed that dress,” she said, referring to the role of wedding dress designer Elizabeth James played by actress Natasha Richardson in the film. “It has a ‘90s vibe to it a little bit, so I loved it. I wanted clean lines and silk with minimal design and a ballgown [silhouette].” Her wedding jewels were the perfect compliment to her epic gown. KL: I saw you said that you think “the jewelry you wear on your wedding week is just as important as the outfits.” Talk about your epic jewels by Verstolo Fine Jewelry.

AG: As I was making content early on, Verstolo reached out to me about a potential partnership, and then I had a consultation with them to pick out and rent diamonds from them for the wedding. It was a partnership, so I did a couple of posts in exchange for the jewelry, which was more than fair. We picked out the diamonds over Zoom since they were in New York, and I was in LA. They sent me three pieces the week before the wedding, and I was able to show them the pictures of the dresses and then work with someone. It was really a fun, customized experience. As for her bridesmaids, who were a small party of two consisting of her sister and best friend, Akilah raves that they were “so helpful” throughout the wedding process: “My maid of honor is my sister, and my bridesmaid, Sidney, is my best friend. It was not a question of who to have in the bridal party. They mean everything to me.” And when it came to their ceremony fashions, she was clear on the mere two guidelines she had for their looks: “I knew very early on I didn’t want the same dresses for each girl. I wanted them to be comfortable and also show their personalities. They were a huge part of the ceremony, so I wanted them to feel their best. I liked the dusty blue and silk and let them do whatever [from there]. It really wasn’t a drawn out situation. I just gave them those guidelines and said, ‘Go for it.’” KL: Your wedding glam was everything. What was the beauty look you were going for? AG: My friend, Sidney, is a model, and I knew immediately that I was going to go to her to find the best person to do glam. She connected me to Melissa Hurkman and Ricky Fraser for hair and makeup. I know some brides say, “I want to look like myself on my wedding day.” But I didn’t want to look like myself. I wanted to be transformed. I didn’t want to look too, too made up, but I did want to have a visible glam. And I wanted to do something with the eye makeup that could easily transition from day to night. For hair, the vibe that I was going for was ‘90s supermodel, Chanel runway hair. So, volume, big, loose curls—almost like a Cindy Crawford moment. She was on my mood board. Like her side part, big hair vibe—I love that. Soon after getting glammed, the time came for Akilah to walk down the aisle. "I was pretty calm the whole morning," remembered Akilah. “I was excited. I wasn’t as anxious as I thought I was going to be. We got there at 7:30 a.m. By the time everybody was BLACK BR IDE .C OM

done with glam, it was 12:30 p.m. Then we’re doing photos and TikToks, and then we looked up and it was like 3:30 already! It just went by so quickly.” Her nerves made their first appearance as she walked down the aisle with her father on her arm. “Walking down the aisle is when I started to get nervous,” shared Akilah. “I could tell my dad was nervous, which made me nervous too. Andrew walked down the aisle with his mom, and I could hear people clapping when he walked down and I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s so many people here!’ So, that made it feel real. And then it was my turn with my dad. It felt like everything was in slow motion. I was trying not to fall over my dress. I could feel my dad trying to match my pace and not walk too fast, which was cute. I don’t really remember walking down the aisle, but I remember what I felt like. It really felt like a blur.” Luckily, our Editor-in-Chief, Mary Chatman, was in attendance for the big moment and remembered everything as a guest, describing the ceremony as a “rekindling of love.” “Attending all three of her bridal events gave me a full circle perspective on the wedding and the love they share,” began Mary. And it all started the night

of the rehearsal dinner. As soon as you walked in the door, you were met with servers with hors d’oeuvres and wine of your choice. Akilah ran over to my husband and I and greeted us like she had known us her whole life. Everyone acted like they knew me, and it was so sweet. It didn't even feel like you were amongst strangers; everybody was talking to everybody. “The next day, we were filled with anticipation for the wedding because of all the love in the room the night before. We arrived at the wedding, and it was so nice to be back at the beautiful Bel Air Bay Club because we had shot one of our covers there before. So, it was nice to come and experience a real wedding there. Walking down to the lawn to be seated is where it all began for the wedding day. The vows touched many couples out in the audience, and people were even cozying up to each other. That was my favorite part. The goosebumps I felt hearing them talk about how much they love each other was beautiful. And that's what weddings should do: remind couples of their own ‘why,’ and it certainly did that.” Following a cocktail hour filled with lots of wine and kosher appetizers, one of the highlights of the reception were the couples’ dances. "Andrew wanted to take charge of all the music

stuff," said Akilah. "For the first dance, we danced to 'A Sunday Kind of Love' by Etta James." My dad and I danced to a song by Sam Cooke. And Andrew danced with his mom to ‘What A Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong. I honestly wish I would have danced and ate a little bit more. I did not just have to sit down and just have a meal. But there were so many people that by the time you go around and talk to 22 tables and everyone wants a picture with you, you look up, it’s 11 o'clock and everyone has to go. I probably said ‘thank you’ like 2,500 times.” Mary described Akilah’s wedding fashions as “cohesive and on theme for the bride's classic coastal aesthetic. Her wedding gown was ethereal and fit like a glove.” And as for her reception dress, Mary said that the strapless gown “was stunning and allowed her to flow around in the room very well.” Mary noted that Akilah gracefully floated on Cloud 9 throughout the night of their wedding, and said that the next morning, Akilah entered her and Andrew’s farewell brunch on the same glowing high, wearing a beautiful flowy floral print dress: “The farewell brunch was a wonderful, beautiful send off. And to have an extra day to share a wonderful meal with the happy couple’s family and close friends before going back home felt like a perfect way to end it all.” Despite her “nautical tea party” aestheticised reception being a hit, the bride’s most memorable moment was her first kiss as a wife with her husband: “That was just the best part for me— kissing Andrew after we were pronounced husband and wife. I remember everyone clapping and him smashing the glass and that was just… everything.” As stated earlier, Akilah understands that while her wedding was seemingly the bridal moment of the year, according to many, her marriage itself is what will be the lasting impact for her. And that goes back to the best piece of marital advice she received from her beloved mother. “My mom told me, ‘Just be beautiful.’ And when she said that, I don’t think she just meant physically. She meant energy, how you speak—just to let your light radiate. That's how she said it, just have good energy,” said Akilah.

The goal of the Gould union is rooted in making their mark on the world a positive one. “The bottom line is that personal and career goals don’t matter unless you’re doing good in the world,” began Akilah “And I feel like you can do good throughout many aspects of your life, whether it's career or spiritual or financial. If you’re not doing good for other people, it doesn’t have the same impact.” KL: What do you want your legacy to be as husband and wife? AG: I want us to have a legacy of philanthropy, passion, kindness, and just letting the world know that we were a family who cared about other people, cared about causes that were important to us, and made people's lives better. When talking about the impact she made on social media and amongst Black women who engaged with and saw a world of new bridal possibilities through her content, Akilah’s advice to them was expansive and meaningful. KL: How do you feel knowing so many Black women resonated with and were inspired by your wedding journey? What do you hope those who followed take away from it? AG: One, don’t be afraid to be with who you want to be with. I would say to do what’s authentic to you. It sounds really cliche, but you’ll appreciate it looking back on your wedding as you get older and realize that trends are not always the answer. Doing something that feels right to you and your partner will be a lot more memorable. If you’re doing something that’s authentic to you, it will always be original; it’ll always be timeless; it’ll always be different. And it will be a lot more special. I would also say to remember that the wedding is not the important part of why you’re here. You’re here to marry the love of your life. You should be just as happy marrying them [as you would be] going to the courthouse. The beautiful wedding is a part of the story and it's important, but it's not the reason why you’re here. And I had to even remind myself that. Weddings can get stressful, but I just had to remind myself that it doesn’t matter. If Andrew is not here, I wouldn’t be doing any of this. And that’s what matters most.

ANTIGUA & BARBUDA

Your Next Romantic Destination: Explore the most romantic destination in the Caribbean BY STEPHANIE KILSON-THOMAS We sat down with Shermain Jeremy of Antigua & Barbuda’s Tourism Board to learn more about Antigua and Barbuda as a romance destination for couples.

A

ntigua and Barbuda are truly gems of the Caribbean. Perfect for destination weddings, honeymoons, and romantic getaways, Antigua and Barbuda have received accolades that include Most Romantic Caribbean Destination and Sexiest Destination. There are plenty of reasons why Antigua and Barbuda are ranked among the top 10 honeymoon destinations. Shermain Jeremy, Special Projects and Events Manager and lead for romance and marketing efforts for the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, sheds light on the beautiful island and its accolades: “We are one country but two beautiful islands offering very, very, unique experiences. Antigua [the bigger island] obviously has more to do, more to see for brides and couples looking for the perfect destination wedding. Barbuda is a lot more exclusive, undeveloped. So, a couple planning something more exclusive—maybe an elopement or a romantic getaway—may want to consider Barbuda because it’s beautiful, exclusive, and difficult to get to.” Below are Jeremy’s recommendations for couples planning a trip to Antigua and Barbuda.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS What helps contribute to Antigua and Barbuda being an amazing destination wedding island are their locations for weddings. From resorts to beautiful beaches and other venues, Antigua offers something for every bride. Highly soughtafter locations for destination weddings include Royalton Antigua Resort & Spa, Coco Bay Resort, Hermitage Bay, Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa, and Hammock Cove Resort. For those couples looking for off-resort destination weddings, Clarence House, an old plantation home with Nelson’s Dock Yard as your backdrop, is pretty popular on the island. On the island of Barbuda, Barbuda Bell is an eco-friendly resort. It’s the only resort on the island of Barbuda, and it’s very intimate and off the beaten path.

HONEYMOONS AND ROMANCE TRAVEL Most resorts in Antigua are adults only. This provides the perfect atmosphere for couples looking to enjoy their first trip as husband and wife, or couples looking to reconnect with one another in a beautiful location. While Royalton Antigua is a family friendly resort, it is the only resort on the island that offers over-water bungalows, which are adults only (Marriott will open its adults only Royalton CHIC Resort in Antigua in late 2023). Resorts such as Cocos Hotel, Coco Bay Resort, and Hammock Cove Resort & Spa offer rooms with private pools to enhance privacy and intimacy for couples. New to Antigua is Wild Lotus Glamping, which is extremely popular amongst couples looking for a romantic getaway.

102

DATE NIGHT Jeremy says there’s plenty to do in Antigua! Street food vendors and great food can be found on the island. She recommends Sheer Rocks at Coco Bay Resort with cabanas and private pools where you can have the ever-so-popular floating breakfast. Dine at popular spots like Beachlimerz, Jacqui O’s Beach House, Papa Zouk, Dennis Cocktail Bar & Restaurant, Anna’s on the Beach, and the island’s only steakhouse, Gather Steakhouse. Couples getting married, honeymooning, or just taking time for themselves will find everything they need in Antigua and Barbuda. The month of June is Romance Month on the islands, and it’s the perfect opportunity to visit one of the islands’ 365 beaches. With so much to do, it is a destination you will not regret!

Vow Renewal A Continuation of Love

inisha and Samuel’s love story began back in 1997 when Samuel rang Tinisha’s doorbell looking for her brother. That chance encounter eventually led them to celebrate 25 years of growing together in love. The lovely couple had a modern, chic vow renewal ceremony on their 10th wedding anniversary earlier this year with their children playing the role of best man and maid of honor. The celebration took place at The Elan in Lodi, and the couple exchanged vows in the Skylight room in front of 60 of their close friends and family. Pretty Posh Events produced an exquisite event with tons of details captured by Aida Malik Photography, while Finer Touch Entertainment kept the crowd engaged. ENGAGEMENT STORY: It was Christmas Eve, and we had plans to have dinner at my cousin and her husband’s home. As we were preparing to leave, he mentioned that he would meet me there. Of course, I wanted to take one car and go together. But he insisted for us to take two cars, and I reluctantly agreed. I arrived at my family’s house first, and about 10 minutes later he arrived. ROMANCING THE ROAD BY MARY CHATMAN

Seeing a couple riding off into the sunset is so romantic. After a wedding, it is the perfect ending to the ceremony. There is something special about watching the couple ride off into the sunset with streamers and flowers in tow. It does not matter if it is the trusty Honda, a Bentley, or a brand-new Mercedes stretch limousine. There is something sexy and romantic that sends chills and thrills to even the least cupid-struck among us. Summer road trips together are a wonderful way to create intimacy and ignite passion. It is just the two of you, and the open road, so go ahead and let the flirting begin. Hitting the road with the love of your life can be fun and exhilarating. Just like anything else, it’s what you make of it. If you get it right, you will find the call of the open road simply irresistible. Hold on a minute…before the sweet phase turns sour, there is one thing to keep in mind: the road can be the perfect breeding ground for arguments. It is not like being on a plane, a bus, or a train with people all around. It is just the two of you with a console between you. Do not let it hit you and blow out the wind in your sail. You do not want a simple decision like where to stop for a bathroom break or where you are going to eat to turn into a full-blown civil war. Road trips can also create disharmony, add stress, and tension to what is otherwise meant to be an enjoyable time.

To help ensure you spend time in an atmosphere of harmony, tranquility, passion, and lust (it is okay…you are married!), here are seven tips to help you Romance the Road! 1. Decide on a destination as a team. Surprise trips are no fun if they are not something that your beloved enjoys. Remember that anticipation is especially important and should be a shared experience. Each time you plan a road trip together, you will get better and better at picking a location that you both agree on. You may want to keep the first trip short and see how it goes. Keep in mind, you can always increase the distance for your next road trip together. But if you feel you are ready for a long road trip, go for it together! 2. Consider what to pack. Load up the CD player with your favorite oldies. You know the ones that made sparks fly from the start. Fill a cooler with ice for your beverages, and pack a picnic basket with all your favorite goodies. Order Couples or Honeymoon Table Topics or Conversation Cards, which are perfect for the days you may end up stuck in the room and want to find yourself in a state of laughter. These decks of interesting topics and thoughtprovoking funny questions are a wonderful way to get you both asking and answering questions you may have never asked each other before. They will also steer you clear of questions that BLACK BR IDE .C OM

109

may stir up the calmest ocean and, instead, keep you laughing and storytelling for as long as you can stand it! 3. Don't rush. Remember this is a fun, romantic ride into the sunset. You do not have to be in a hurry, so make sure you have the time and are not rushing to get home before the trip even starts. Allow time for stopping by outlets for a little shopping or window shopping, whichever you prefer. You may just want to pick up a treasure to later remind you of the trip. Pull over and watch the sunset together—just breathe. Romance thrives on time. Make the best of it. Go ahead…pull over and have a make out session! Just make sure it is at a welcome center and just a tease please because I do not want you to get a ticket for indecent exposure. 4. Keep the line of communication open. Take advantage of the open road in a positive way. Keep the line of communication open. Listen to your partner, with an open heart and mind. Share your honest feelings, too. Do not dictate to each other. Resist the temptation to nag and complain. Even if the navigator occasionally gets things wrong, it is better to bite your tongue and take a detour. Why? Because you will get things wrong occasionally, too! Patience and consideration are key, and if you have followed Tip 2 above, you have the time to enjoy the side trip instead of ranting about your soul mate's inability to read a map. 5. Keep a journal and take pictures. Recalling shared experiences is not only romantic; it also strengthens relationships long-term. You can even create a blog about your adventures. 110

BLAC K BRI DE. C OM

Who knows, it may inspire other couples to hit the road. Make up your mind to enjoy every moment. Having the right attitude can make all the difference while romancing the road together! 6. Book a spa treatment in advance. Treat yourselves to a sexy his and her massage while you are away. There is an even greater excitement booking a relaxing massage away from your area. Check out spas before you leave. Try to find a spa that has a sauna or secluded area pool to enjoy before or after your massage. 7. Hide a love note or a small gift. This little romantic gesture, once discovered, will have anyone smiling with glee. Be sure to eat meals on a regular schedule to avoid grouchiness. If the bickering starts, it can easily lead to knock-down, drag-out arguments that are hard to recover from during your time on the road. Eating meals on a consistent schedule and getting enough rest are the best defenses. Happy Trails!

SAGE ADVICE Seasoned wisdom from experienced wives, offering pearls of marital wisdom to brides-to-be for navigating the journey of love and commitment. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

BE YOUR OWN RELATIONSHIP GOALS: CREATE WITHOUT COMPARISON Twenty-nine years later, #TeamWilliamson is still #TeamWilliamson. We’re not perfect, but we’re us. The power we possess as a unit is unmatched. We don’t look to the left or right at what anyone else is doing. We measure ourselves against ourselves, always striving to be better for one another. Comparing your relationship to someone else’s relationship model is one of the biggest mistakes people make. Social media is notorious for spreading the idea that what someone else has should be desired and duplicated. The reality is, we don’t know anyone’s true story. We only see the upside that they decide to show us. We know about the trips, lavish meals, new cars, and birthday gifts. We see their lives in snapshots and reels and then peg them as “relationship goals.” Even if the couples we have decided upon and chosen to admire, emulate, or envy (let’s be honest) are indeed having the time of their lives in realtime, we still don’t know the behind-the-scenes and the work that it took to get there. Too often, people view the fruit of progress in a relationship as instant or immediate and neglect to respect the journey. My advice—be your own goal. Take your eyes off of what anyone else is doing. Stop comparing your real “in progress” life to someone else’s screenshot of happiness, and get committed to doing the work that makes solid relationships great.

One of the things that makes a great marriage is the ability to determine what is essential. The strength of marriage gets tested. First, make sure you are connecting with someone with whom you are willing to go the distance. Social media dream couples don’t post disagreements or disappointments. They don’t show you the low times and the work—all the hard work that goes into one picturesque moment. Choose someone mutually and equally committed to doing the work. Marriage is about the foundation and building something stable— bonds, companionship, family, business, and legacy. Sometimes maintenance of those things requires forgiveness and understanding that your partner is better than their worst day. Yes, romance and the fancy stuff make relationships look pretty, but pretty fades and sometimes hurts. You have to be assured that there is something to sustain you on the days pretty barely looks okay. What do you and your partner have that is worth fighting for? What is your capacity for grace? At the root level, are you and your mate friends? Do you have what it takes to build and rebuild, structure and restructure, go headon, and tackle the hardships TOGETHER, again and again? Do you have the courage to create without comparison? Look at your partner and declare your relationship, #relationship goals. BLACK BR IDE .C OM

We are storytellers that celebrate and capture your life’s most precious moments with visual ART. We create a safe space that invites your most genuine selves to thrive in and relive your entire day with our photojournalistic, cinematic, and editorial style.

“Your Natural Beauty Solution!” Felicia has worked with brides on their wedding day to celebrities for special events. Her approach to makeup is simple, making her clients feel like the best version of themselves.

My focus is capturing your ‘best you’ during the span of the day, from candid shots during ‘the good stuff’, to guiding you through portraits when you have no idea what to do with your hands.

We specialize in making memories that taste good. You’ve said yes to the dress. You’ve chosen your venue. The colors, theme, and flowers have all been selected. And now you’re excited to plan the star of your decor- a cake that makes a stunning first impression with a taste that leaves a lasting impression.

FOTOS BY FOLA

Fotos by Fola captures the essence in every shot. I believe in getting the most out of every moment, so the moments can be cherished for a lifetime! Using a photojournalistic style, I can tell a story that will allow you to relive the moments as if they just happened. My goal is to not only satisfy you but to exceed your expectations!

We are Wooten Photography, offering wedding and portrait photography. Let’s chat and bring your creative vision to your photos one event at a time!

“When you book with Breaux Moments Studios, we offer you a 5-star full-service experience, with professional lens, lights, props and assistance”.
