Blackbird Reads Sleepy Books

Arlo the Lion who Couldn’t Sleep written and illustrated by Catherine Rayner published by Macmillan Owl helps Arlo get to to sleep with his sleepy rhymes, and then together they help all the animals drift off – except owl who is wide-awake at night. Absolutely gorgeous illustrations by Catherine Rayner and a perfect bedtime story for little ones.

Goodnight,

Little Bookshop by Amy Cherrix, illustrated by E.B.Goodale published by Walker

As the bookshop closes after another busy day, everything is put to bed and the shop cat slinks off into the night. The lilting rhythm helps to induce sleep, with repetition and sound play. With its cheerful illustrations, this is also a homage to local bookshops – please support them whenever you can, especially our friends at The Falmouth Bookseller. For 2+

Goodnight

Starry Night by Joseph Coelho, illustrated by Allison Colpoys published by Thames and Hudson

Bedtime poems inspired by works of art, fourteen gentle rhymes to help children wind down and drift off to sleep. Van Gogh’s Starry Night provides the title, but there are unusual works of art too and I love Faith Ringgold’s colourful night quilt, which inspires Coelho’s poem

A Quilt of Stars. At the end there’s a useful page on ‘Art as Therapy at Bedtime’. For 4+

A Midsummer Night’s Drama by Louie Stowell, illustrated by Isobel Lundie published by Little Tiger Shakespeare acted by bears?! This is a very funny introduction to the world of theatre. Bill Bear and his friends are putting on the famous play but he gets so over-excited after the first night - how will he ever get off to sleep? Suitably dramatic illustrations and the new Shakesbearian Tales looks set to be a winner. For 5+

The Best Sleepover in the World by Jacqueline Wilson published by Puffin

A long awaited sequel to Sleepovers, published in 2001. Lily is in a wheelchair and non-verbal, but when her sister is left out of Chloe’s cool sleepover, she does something about it. Wilson perfectly describes feelings of belonging and rejection, and wanting to be in ‘the gang’, which so often beset girls. For 9+

There are some classic books, many still in print, which I urge you to look out for. Martin Waddell’s Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear, published by Walker, Peace at Last by Jill Murphy, published by Macmillan and Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson, published by Simon and Schuster are some of my favourites. Happy dreams!

Beach Bumps and Sunscreen Slips:

Navigating Family Summer Shenanigans in Cornwall! Some advice on staying well this summer from Kernow Health CIC

Summer in Cornwall is a perfect time for families to unwind and enjoy the beach, but do be aware of common summer illnesses and injuries, especially for children.

Sunburn

Our beaches offer plenty of sunshine, making sunburn a risk. Apply high-SPF sunscreen before going out, reapplying every two hours and after swimming. Wear protective clothing like hats and long sleeves. If sunburn occurs, soothe the skin with cool baths and aloe vera, and have lots of hydration.

Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes are a nuisance. Use insect repellent with DEET and wear long clothing, if you are outdoors, particularly at dawn and dusk. Alleviate itching with antihistamines or soothing creams and avoid scratching to prevent infection.

Jellyfish and Weever Fish Stings

Jellyfish stings can be neutralized with vinegar and pain relieved with hot water. If you step on a camouflaged Weever fish, rinse with seawater, soak in hot water, and remove spines with tweezers. Seek medical attention for severe reactions.

Dehydration

Pack plenty of water to stay hydrated and take regular breaks in the shade. Signs of dehydration include dry mouth, dizziness, and dark urine. Replenish fluids and rest in a cool area if these symptoms appear.

Cuts and Scrapes

Beach activities can lead to minor injuries. Pack a first-aid kit with antiseptic wipes, bandages, and gauze. Cleanse wounds with water and apply antiseptic ointment. Seek medical attention if bleeding persists or the wound is deep.

Heat Exhaustion

Keep cool by seeking shade, wearing lightweight clothing, and drinking fluids. Symptoms include nausea, headaches, and sweating. Move to a cool area, drink water, and use damp cloths to lower body temperature. Seek medical help if symptoms worsen.

Enjoy Cornwall’s beaches safely and create lasting summer memories! If you do become unwell on a day out, contact your GP, visit 111 online, or go to one of the minor injuries units (MIUs).

Live waiting times for MIUs are on www.cornwallft.nhs.uk/miu-waiting-times/

The power & pleasure of play with clay

We all know that getting creative makes us feel good; it gives us a sense of pride when we can say ‘I made that!’ But did you know that engaging in creative play boosts children’s intellectual development? Yes - studies have shown that creativity literally makes them smarter! As they focus on how and why things work, they improve their critical thinking skills. Playing with clay gives children a chance to experiment, free to express themselves and enjoy the creative process, giving them greater confidence to take risks.

One-off taster sessions are great, but regular sessions allow children to work on pieces over a longer period, appreciate what clay can do, play with ideas, and learn different skills. Many potters work with schools and home educators.
