Dear Readers,

We were asked recently to explain more about BlackbirdPie: this magazine is a tiny, independent, Falmouth-based business that shares entertaining and quirky activities for children and families to do together. We enjoy ferreting out distinctly Cornish ventures, places & events of notable quality, and freebies! Please tell advertisers if you have read about them in the magazine, it is how we survive.

Many thanks to Evie Harvey for sending us a gorgeous picture of her daughter at a recent Hayle Heritage Centre’s Cornish Maids craft session (on page 8). Please email or Facebook message us with your pictures from events and places you found in BlackbirdPie. We love hearing from you (and it’s fun for children to see themselves in print!)

Have a lovely half-term, Simon, Vanessa, and the Blackbird p.s. Happy 50th Birthday to the wonderful Lappa Valley! Join in the celebrations on 14 to 16 June for a Steam Extravaganza.

We believe that all details are correct at the time of going to print but cannot accept any responsibility for mistakes or omissions. We try to ensure all events featured will be enjoyed by younger children but in some instances we cannot test this and have to rely on the opinions of the organisers.

University Centre Truro & Penwith

Meet Dean: From Bartender to fully qualified lecturer with the University Centre Truro & Penwith.

Dean chose to study for a Certificate in Education at the University Centre and graduated in 2023, winning the prestigious Education Award. Dean is now a Hospitality Lecturer at Penwith College.

Dean worked as a Bartender for eight years before becoming a Hospitality Assessor. However, he missed the food and beverage duties he loved - like making cocktails and putting smiles on customer’s faces - and decided to move into lecturing.

Dean said: ‘The course was incredibly flexible and being able to study part-time alongside working full-time helped me achieve my career ambitions. Becoming a Lecturer allowed me to interact with bartending again and use my industry qualifications to teach and influence the next generation.’

To find out more about taking your first steps into a career in Education, search ‘Truro and Penwith College Education’.

At this time of year, your child may be getting ready to move from primary to secondary school, or you may have older children already there. For secondary school age children, the vaccination programme offers routine vaccinations including HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). The HPV vaccination programme is one of the most successful in the world and has dramatically lowered the rates of some cancers, such as cervical cancer in women and harmful infections in both women and men – preventing many serious illness and saving lives.

This vaccination is first offered to boys and girls aged 12 to 13, and the aim is to make sure children are immunised before they leave school in year 11. Previously this was given in two doses however, the latest evidence shows that one dose is as effective as two doses. So, if your child has already received one dose of the vaccination, they will be fully immunised and will not need another dose.

You will be told when your child is due their HPV vaccination. For all vaccinations you will need to complete a consent form and details are in the letter you receive via your child’s school or Elective Home Education Team. You can also find a list of FAQs on https://kernowhealthcic.org.uk/

The Kernow Health team are happy to answer your questions, and to fill in the consent form with you over the phone if you prefer. You can contact the team on kernowhealthcic.schoolimmunisation@nhs.net or 01872 221105.

How to protect new-born babies from whooping cough

Whooping cough rates have risen sharply recently - and babies who are too young to start their vaccinations are at risk. Young babies with whooping cough are often very unwell and most will be admitted to hospital because of their illness. When whooping cough is particularly severe, they can potentially die. However, getting vaccinated while you’re pregnant protects your baby from developing whooping cough in the first few weeks of their life.

The immunity you get from the vaccine passes to your baby through the placenta and protects them until they are old enough to be vaccinated against whooping cough at eight weeks old.

The best time for you to get vaccinated and protect your baby from whooping cough is from 16 weeks up to 32 weeks of pregnancy. This maximises the chance that your baby will be protected from birth, through the transfer of your antibodies before they are born.
