Jakub Józef Orlinski – Il Pomo D’Oro

The Polish award-winning counter tenor Jakub Józef Orliński comes to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to captivate the Greek audience not only with his voice, which has been described as ‘the most eerily beautiful on the planet’, but also with his charismatic presence as a breakdancer.Together with the extroverts and activists Il Pomo d’Oro, the acclaimed ensemble founded in 2012 by renowned virtuosos in the field of historical music performance, they are celebrated in sold-out recitals around the world, introducing a new generation of listeners to Early music. It is no coincidence that Orliński’s live recorded performance of Vivaldi’s aria Vedrò con mio diletto (Aix-en-Provence, 2017) has over 11,000,000 views on YouTube. With Beyond, they present early Baroque compositions, many of which are rarely performed, in one of the most highly anticipated and unconventional evenings on this year’s programme.

Zonder

Piraeus 260, 29-30/06/2024

To the sounds of Strauss’ Blue Danube, three performers on stage are trying to find their footing and get in tune with each other in a game of ever-changing rules. Their persistence to completing the work, disregarding a decomposing set, is almost heart-rending. Employing humour and self-mockery, the award-winning Argentinean choreographer Ayelen Parolin, who has been living and working in Europe since 2000, orchestrates in ZONDER a cheerful nightmare, a choreographic shenanigan that is open to all possibilities.

PARTHENIS

Seasonless. Minimal. Elegant. Essential. Brilliantly designed twisted basics that move beyond the brims of size and gender. These are the core principles infused in every Parthenis collection that organically merges into the next one. The brand’s iconic yet everyday pieces are an ode to athletic chic with a bohemian, relaxed feel. Conceived in the mind of Dimitris Parthenis, who founded the premium clothing brand in the seventies, the elegant Cotton is the essence of the Parthenis heritage. Along with natural and sustainable fabrics like linen, wool and silk, they incarnate our wardrobe staples that are worn and loved for many years, gradually creating a timeless essential collection. The Parthenis look has evolved organically, only to remain current, under his daughter Orsalia’s artistic direction. The instantly recognizable identity of Parthenis is perceived as a contemporary embodiment of simple, clear elegance with an essential attitude, both timeless and ever relevant.

KOORELOO

Kooreloo started in 2015 when its Creative Director and artist Leila Karr, envisaged the link of modern fashion traits and art, with a specific traditional material, the loom woven rags. In essence, she realised that European chic and the Mediterranean tradition invited for an unforced, if not natural, combination! Blending the idiosyncratic modern personality of Leila with local materials that come directly from the glorious heritage of the Mediterranean region, Kooreloo combines traditional weaves, semiprecious stones, luxurious and one-of-a-kind fabrics to handcraft, with exceptional care, creations that are better described as art objects. Kooreloo has achieved an astonishing penetration of the luxury fashion market in the region, with a strong presence in the islands of Mykonos and Santorini. Internationally, Kooreloo has penetrated the markets of a number of European Countries (Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Holland, Italy and France in Saint Tropez and Monaco), the Korean Market and, what is most, sells more than half of its production to the United States in numerous concept stores as well as iconic department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Barneys of Saks, Revolve and Rent the Runway.

VASSILIS ZOULIAS

Fashion, this living form of art holds power –power to control a part of one’s image. This is what Vassilis Zoulias is definitely doing at its best. He respects and translates the historical implications that an outfit holds to today’s era, always respecting each time’s aura. His exceptional talent is reflected on his ability to describe emotions through charming elegant figures and patterns. Old School femininity is the term he serves so devoutly: romantic prints, voluptuous figures with slim waist, noble style and aristocratic allure characterize his nostalgic yet modern creations. His “bon chic” vision, quintessentially international, is sewn with deep politeness and graciousness –each piece honors the legacy of the eclectic glamour of the past. His silhouette flatters all types of modern women. Greek celebrities, politicians and business women as well as important international personalities have been constantly choosing to wear Zoulias. From Laura Dern to Arianna Rockefeller and from Gwen Stefani to Kim Catrall, Vassilis Zoulias was the only Greek Designer who dressed Lilly Collins in five outfits for Emily in Paris season 2. One of the brand's most brilliant moments was at the 2018 Golden Globes, where Alison Brie literally stole the show on that emotional night of Me Too, wearing a strapless dress and pants that went viral and was on every best dressed list of the night.

Release Athens 2024

Great live shows by the sea

On June 2016, Release Athens opened its doors for the first time at Plateia Nerou (Water Plaza), a beautiful, open space by the sea, just a few minutes from the city center. Since then, the festival hosted some of the biggest names of the global music scene and from a wide range of music styles: Arctic Monkeys, Slipknot, Liam Gallagher, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Pet Shop Boys, Rosalia, Prodigy, Wu-Tang Clan, London Grammar, Judas Priest, Iggy Pop, PJ Harvey, Alice In Chains, New Order, Cypress Hill, Jamiroquai and dozens of others.

This year, Release Athens 2024 has made an even more impressive return, with Pulp, The Smile, The Offspring, Megadeth, Blind

Guardian, Parov Stelar and many more, already delivering spectacular performances, with more to come next month!

July kicks off with a special show at Technopolis City of Athens, where the electro-pop trio Cannons (Saturday July 6th), after lighting up major music festivals (such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, etc.), will be performing in Greece for the first time, just as their career takes off! On Tuesday July 9th, a unique groovy night will follow, with co-headliners Thievery Corporation, one of the mainstays of electronic music, and Black Pumas, the new big name in black music on their first visit to Greece. The lineup will be completed by the supergroup of The Budos Band and the soul singer and

Parov Stelar's main vocalist, Anduze. Then, on back-to-back nights, we will welcome two leading figures in the music scene. On Wednesday July 17th, the seminal Massive Attack will headline, with Beak> (Geoff Barrow’s band after Portishead) and the groundbreaking Mount Kimbie, as the opening acts. The very next day, Thursday July 18th, one of the most iconic names in pop music history, Duran Duran, will headline one of their few European shows this year. They will be joined by up-andcoming duo SOFI TUKKER, who will be making their Athens debut.

Last but not least, Release Athens 2024 will come to an end with two monumental nights dedicated to heavy metal music. First up, a landmark night for metalheads, as on Sunday July 21st, metal gods Judas Priest and Bruce Dickinson, singer and frontman of Iron Maiden, will share the headline duties, while on Sunday July 28th, the pioneers of extreme metal, Behemoth, along with the equally important Testament and Pestilence, will close this year's event in the most exciting way!

ROMA GALLERY

Marianna Lourba’s images have no beginning and no end – one complements and continues within the other, takes part in the other’s world, with grace, balance, harmony and rhythm. The colors in Lourba’s work express the distinctiveness of the Greek landscape, as it has been inscribed onto our senses and collective consciousness from the time of Homer to the present day. The color white is present throughout her works. It is the silent protagonist, the link between her compositions, the color that connects Cyclades to Aegean, Pleiades to Alcyonides, Aeolus to August. This white sometimes solid and digital, and at other times natural, inspired from life and Greek, folk architecture. The artist reminds us that we are dependent on that blue in our totality, interconnected with the sea that surrounds us. Marianna Lourba is represented by Roma Gallery in Athens.

9 UNMISSABLE THINGS TO DO IN ATHENS

Like a charismatic friend always inviting you to spend time with them, Athens welcomes you with a generosity that you just can’t resist. Whatever you need to know… what to see and do in Athens and how to get the best out of your stay you only have to ask! There’s always a friendly local ready to make you feel at home. So what are you waiting for? Let’s take a look at the best things to do on your holidays in Athens.

Breathe deep and just take in the atmosphere

If there’s one reason to choose Athens, it’s because of the way it makes you feel. Call it a buzz, a vibe, a mood. It’s edgy

and traditional, urban and cool, intimate and welcoming – all at the same time. Just wandering the streets lets the feeling inside. So even though visiting the Acropolis is probably No.1 on your list of things to do in Athens, hang on a minute. Instead, let’s first use Athens’ most recognisable landmark as your beacon to explore the sites and neighbourhoods all around it. Just take in the atmosphere and relish the feeling of being free. There’s no better way to start your holidays in Athens.

Live the Acropolis experience

That said, the Acropolis tops most lists of things to do in Athens for good reason. It’s not just a world-renowned monument

and eternal symbol of the city, but its most recognisable feature, the Parthenon (dedicated to the goddess Athena), gave the city its name. A tour of the Acropolis brings you face to face with a 2,500-yearold legend. And when you find yourself standing above Athens, with a 360-degree view of the city, it’s hard to imagine you need anything more. But visiting the Acropolis is also an opportunity to learn about the tumultuous history of Athens since its 5th century-BC Golden Age under Pericles. And of course to complete the experience, you’ll visit the Acropolis Museum, specially designed to showcase statues and other antiquities originally found in or on the Acropolis or unearthed during the creation of the museum itself.

Beach-time on the Athens Riviera

But enough about the Athens you were expecting. You’re here to recharge with the energy of the Mediterranean sun. So what if you were told you could enjoy city and beach on the same day? Well, the Athens Riviera has been the secret of Athenians for decades and now’s the time to share it with the rest of the world. A series of beaches, restaurants and bars run all the way down the Athens coastline – from Paleo Faliro (up from Piraeus port) through the southern suburbs of Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza and on to the tip of Attica at Cape Sounion.

The Greek island experience right next to Athens

Then again, after all that time spent at home, lying on the beach might not be anywhere

near enough to satisfy that craving for an island escape. So if you need more, you’ll love learning that there are islands to visit right next to Athens all the way through the year. Just an hour or two from Piraeus by ferry or hydrofoil could feel like a million miles away – little fishing harbours and tavernas where the pace of life slows right down. Aegina, Hydra, Poros … and a little further away, Spetses proudly take their place alongside the best-known Greek islands. And if you think you don’t have time to visit more than one, you can even enjoy a mini island-hopping tour to two or three.

Discover culture in plain sight

Few other cities shower their guests with cultural treats so generously. Rome and Florence come to mind … and in the same breath comes Athens. Masterpiece after masterpiece is the reward for even the briefest of walks around the centre … the Panathenaic Stadium, Ancient Agora, Odeon of Herodes Atticus (where every summer there are starlit performances of opera divas and pop stars), the Temple of Hephaestus, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the list’s a long one.

Pencil in some museum time

Athens has a way of celebrating its museums. The extraordinary Goulandris Museum of Modern Art and the Benaki Museum for Greek Culture offer sweeping journeys of their particular narrative in elegant, airy and light former neoclassical houses. They also have excellent cafes (the Goulandris Museum in a courtyard, the Benaki on the rooftop). Another great museum in a

former neoclassical house is the Museum of Cycladic Art – the highlight being the elegant, mystical figurines that flourished in the central Aegean in the Early Bronze Age.

Taste your way around the city like a local Hungry work! So now’s the time to mention that Athens has undergone a culinary revolution. Whether you’re a full-on foodie or just someone who enjoys great food and drink, exploring the flavours of Athens ranks right up there in the things to do in the Greek capital. Not least because you’ll discover very quickly that Athenians savour everything about food – the taste, atmosphere, camaraderie and just being outdoors and having fun. So it’s best to dedicate a day or half-day to a food tour. Start with an Athenian breakfast (a sesame seed-crusted koulouri or pie), move on to the markets and spice shops, have lunch in a dine-in deli (where you’ll be told about the best olive oil and local products sourced by the owner), join the locals with a Greek coffee or iced freddo and – after a chance to digest – enjoy a fine-dining rooftop dinner with a view of the lit-up Acropolis. You’ll have experienced a culinary symphony.

Hit the nightlife, neighbourhood by neighbourhood Athenians love to be out and about, particularly on the warm evening and nights from April to November. Socialising takes place outdoors in bars and restaurants that often take on the character of their neighbourhoods. So here’s your chance to discover some new faces around town: Keramikos and Gazi (for clubbing and a younger crowd), Monastiraki and Thissio (rooftop bars and dining, ideal

for couples), Koukaki (cozy bars for cocktails, sidewalk cafes, tavernas and awesome places for brunch), Kolonaki (with an irresistible nightlife scene, especially in the winter), Pangrati (an artsy aura and cool cafe scene), Petralona (mostly for food and live folk music at what are known as koutoukia and rebetadika). Or perhaps you’re looking for the privacy of a 5* hotel indoor bar or terrace overlooking the Acropolis.

Let Athens put on a show for you

Make the most of your night out by doing what Athenians have loved doing since ancient times… taking in a performance. From the majesty of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Megaron Concert Hall to the National Opera at the SNFCC and the Onassis Foundation’s Stegi… there are iconic venues offering once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Or perhaps a play at the National Theatre (one of the best examples of German-born architect Ernst Ziller’s legacy in Greece) which has been putting on ancient Greek tragedies and comedies since the 1880s and more recently Shakespeare and modern international productions with English supertitles.
