BUILDING CAMARADERIE
Firefighting relies heavily on teamwork, where trust is paramount for mission success. The design of the fire station plays a crucial role in fostering camaraderie by creating appealing dayrooms and kitchens, wellequipped fitness areas, and streamlined personal spaces. These elements hold immense potential for boosting morale, nurturing station pride, and enhancing the overall team experience.
ON-SITE TRAINING
Continuing education is vital for fire staff, yet off-site training is challenging and costly. Integrating training facilities into fire station designs offers a cost-effective solution. Careful planning can provide hands-on training in various areas such as ladder deployment, search and rescue, and advanced life support, ope rescue, confined space extrication, among others.
OPTIMIZING RESPONSE TIME
Response times heavily influence site and station layout decisions. Successful stations are meticulously planned based on how firefighters will utilize the building, with every detail considered, from building orientation to door hardware selection. Each decision, whether large or small, can impact response times positively or negatively and must be evaluated against response time criteria.

BKV Group finished up Fire Station #2 in Rochester, MN. It was a very challenging project with site issues and property acquisition issues. We had a tight budget and they were able to bring it in on time and on budget. [BKV Group] was just fantastic on how they collaborated with the department and my fire group. I was so impressed with the project that when I retired from the Rochester Fire Department, I went to go work for BKV Group.

Fairfax County continues to improve services to our residents and businesses through new facilities like this, bringing state-of-the-art emergency readiness and enhanced emergency medical rescue services. I am also thankful to BKV Group for its dedication to designing our new building with energy-efficient systems to meet LEED Gold certification.

What it really made this project a success was the team. Going back to the initial meeting Chief Slama and I had with Kraus Anderson in August of 2021, to official hiring the 3 key partners of KA, BKV, and Tegra all the way up to the [Grand Opening] event. This group has always worked tirelessly to deliver the community a state-of-the-art Fire Station that it needed and deserved. Its wasn’t always easy (projects like this never are)…but this team always had the end goal in sight and by the turnout tonight it was a hit.
