BAD Guide 2024

Bangkok’sbestbars, drinks, and clubs.

EDITOR’S LETTER:

Here we are again.

It seems like a century ago now, but the BAD Awards were resurrected for 2023—and only then because 2022 was the first full calendar year when bars could operate without Covid restrictions.

And now look at us. Like nothing ever happened.

The BAD Awards are decided by the staff of BK Magazine and a panel of carefully chosen voters from the city’s nightlife spots, F&B industry, journalists, and influencers. This is Bangkok’s only homegrown, English-language nightlife awards, and while we’re excited to see so many returning names in this guide, you’re in for a few surprises.

In the last few years we’ve seen Michelin-star restaurants enter the cocktail scene, a rethinking of Thailand’s booze laws, and of course the tenuous decriminalization of marijuana—all against the back of protests, plagues, and politics. You just can’t keep Bangkok’s nightlife scene down.

Bangkok’s status as mainland Southeast Asia’s biggest, brightest sin city remains untarnished, but, if you look closely, you can see that our city came out of that crucible with a new focus on creativity and community.

Opium

For a second year, Opium has retained its well-earned title. Standing on the Michelin pedigree of Potong, the “Liquid Surreality” of this venue is beyond unique, the service is impeccable, and the drinks are expertly crafted. The journey at Opium begins in the lobby, which is more like a museum from the future than a waiting area for one of the hottest dining and drinking spots in town. From here, you take a tiny (and temperamental) elevator up to the fourth floor, opening to the dark, chic Opium.

Split into the categories of apéritif, sparkle, acid, acid+, solo, and duo, the drinks are complex, thoughtful, and delivered with care and alacrity. The award-winning

Just One More Sip takes top billing on their menu, morphing the margarita into a potion of Cointreau and tequila with a bell pepper cordial and jalapeno pickle brine; on the side, there’s a serving of oyster salt placed inside the shell to complete the curiously maritime flavor. Other drinks are friendlier to sweeter palettes, like the nostalgic—almost childish—Tipsy Oreo bathing roku gin in Oreo cookie syrup with cream, egg whites, and lemon: simple, saccharine, and refreshing. This is a venue in which you can forget neither the space nor the drinks. It’s historic, it’s bleeding edge, and it is so very, very Bangkok.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 6
BAR OF THE YEAR
422, Vanich Soi 1, Samphanthawong, 082-979-3950. Open Wed-Sun 5pm-midnight.

Funkytown

39, Soi Sukhumvit 37, 093-814-1594. Open daily 5pm-midnight.

By the crew behind the beloved Aussie-Singaporean Sarnies. Funkytown (stylized F*nkytown) is their newly opened bar above Sarnies Sukhumvit 27. The space is old-school and disco-inspired. Helmed by head bartender Pae Ketumarn, their drinks are inventive, be it their savory Caesar salad cocktail or sweet pain au matcha—and did we mention they’re incredibly strong? The Sarnies juggernaut has taken Bangkok by storm, and this new spot proves they’re more than food and coffee. That said, don’t miss out on their fun take on a corndog using sai oua from Chiang Mai.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 8
BEST NEW BAR

Find the Photo Booth

1/F, Bantadthong Road, 080-078-9265. Open Wed-Sun 7pm-late.

The talented team behind Find the Locker Room introduced Find the Photo Booth this year in Bantadthong. Finding the bar is half the fun—so we won’t spoil it. The concept is rather entertaining as the menu is based on a music sheet displayed in a CD case and contains cocktails with music chords beneath the titles: flat is more fruity, minor is effervescent, sharp is stronger, and seven is sour. With pedigree behind the bar second to none, this spot is keeping the speakeasy concept fresh.

Sundry

8, Rama IV Rd, Silom., 094-922-9562. Open daily 6pm-late.

Each floor of Sundry serves a different purpose. The Sunrise Room, on the first level, has changing art installations that blend culture and drinks. Upstairs to the Sunkiss Room is where a Thai tapas restaurant will be located. The Studio Bar is on the third level where you can sip your drinks, watch bartenders create concoctions, and dance to DJ beats. The Soleil Lounge, on the fourth level, is a piece of art in itself and feels like you’re walking on a James Turrell-colored light installation. They keep their beverage menu interesting by commemorating significant dates throughout the year.

The 4th Wall

2F, Luxx Langsuan, 828 Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong. Open daily 7pm-late.

The 4th Wall is a new neighborhood bar in Langsuan from one of the hottest bar names in Bangkok, Vesper. It’s a modernist representation of the future inspired by 1960s European films. The bar serves concoctions on a rotating menu with a classy take on traditional cocktails. Their signature house Irish coffee is an elevated version of the espresso martini, and there are other traditional classics like the Japanese Slipper, a sweet and sour green cocktail with notes of melon from the Midori. This spot is all about making classic drinks new again.

Midlife Crisis (Bangkok)

173/3, Soi Sukhumvit 16, 063-167-8318. Open daily 7pm-late. Midlife Crisis, a well-known bar from Chiang Mai, expanded to Bangkok in 2023—and this is a cocktail treat we in the capital have been waiting for. The bar is located on the second floor of the restaurant Pepe, and their hashtag-laden menu features the likes of Bombay Sapphire with chrysanthemum beer, lychee, soda, hops, jasmine foam, and extra dry martini. For bar snacks, you’re in luck; Pepe Bangkok’s late-night snack menu is here to deliver.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 9 2024

Bar Us

1, Soi Sukhumvit 26, 089-500-1656. Open daily 6pm-late.

From the team behind Messenger Service Bar, Bar Us is leading the pack when it comes to savory cocktails. The venue is akin to a laboratory for libations, called the “drinking room.” The space is dimly lit with large, dark wooden tables and bartenders in lab coats. Their offering is structured around a tasting menu concept, divided into starters, mains, and desserts. The cocktails take on a meal-in-one vibe; a standout is the Beef and Onion, highlighting beef jerky infused with Ketel One vodka, creating an earthy, meaty tang balanced by the zesty jalapenos—kind of like drinking a cheeseburger. You can work your way to dessert with the likes of the Pandan and Jackfruit, with nutty and vanilla notes to compliment the jackfruit’s sweet undertones. The cocktails here are far from simple, but there’s something very refreshing about them.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 10
BEST COCKTAIL BAR

BEST COCKTAIL BAR

Mahaniyom

2/F, 100 Mahaseth, 104 Maha Set Rd., 061-664-6588. Open Tues-Sun 5pm-late.

Located above the renowned nose-to-tail spot 100 Mahaseth, Mahaniyom fuses Asian design with an ambiance reminiscent of a souk. The neon tiger on the wall and eclectic decor sets the stage for what is fast becoming one of Bangkok’s best venues for creative cocktails. They focus on sustainability by spotlighting one ingredient and using as many parts as possible. Take the Duck, for instance, uses duck fat, blood, and egg. The result is a creamy, fruity, savory concoction similar to eggnog.

Tropic City

672/65, Charoenkrung Soi 28, 097-242-2890. Open daily 7pm-late.

Who says high-end cocktails need to be fancy? Tropic City has a colorful design incorporating tropical influences from the Caribbean, Brazil, and Thailand, with the brightly painted and with pineapple and pink flamingo signs, antique sofas, and flowers. They provide unique tiki-inspired drinks that are tropical and juice-heavy. The Double Dance Lover, for example, is a flowery cocktail made with gin, pandan, goat milk, mango sticky rice tea, and lemon that’s as refreshing as it is complex. These innovative and creative drinks are combined with warm hospitality and a love for music.

Opium

422 Vanich Rd., 082-979-3950. Open Thur-Mon 5pm-midnight. Set across two stories within Potong, Opium is a secretive speakeasy from the Chef’s family building—a marvel of modern design. Their innovative drinks are inspired by the century-old opium smoking den. The cocktails are based on the concept of “liquid surreality,” with each combination toying with the senses. The menu is 17 pages long and features over 100 beverages that rotate annually and are organized into categories based on strength, ingredients, and flights. The majority of beverages are elevated versions of more classic cocktails. The bar nibbles are also provided by the Potong team.

Vesper

10/15 Convent Road, 02-235-2777. Open daily 5:30pm-late. Bangkok’s Bar scene is not complete without a mention of Vesper. Their team is full of surprises and never fails to bring out new and exciting menus, guest shifts, and bars every year. With their menu last year, People of Vesper, a menu dedicated to their guests, and their newly opened 4th Wall off Langsuan, Vesper is sure to keep bringing surprises.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 12

‘Neung’ Ronnaporn Kanivichaporn

A former actor, television host, and boy band member Mahaniyom’s Ronnaporn ‘Neung’ Kanivichaporn tried on many hats in his 20s before earning the title as one of the Bar World’s 100 Most Influential Industry Figures in 2023. He found his passion for bartending at 33, building up an appreciation for the craft after years of sipping cocktails at some of the city’s iconic venues.

In 2014 the host turned mixologist joined the Diageo World Class and took the 11th spot out of 50 other countries. Eventually, Neung honed his skills and took it all the way to the win in 2017. Finally hitting a stride, he took top honors at the Bacardi Legacy award in 2019.

As a multi-award winning global mixologist, Neung’s repertoire is stacked with some of the city’s most beloved drinking spots: Find the Locker Room, Nuss Bar, and Mahaniyom Cocktail bar which made its way up to the top 20 on The World’s 50 Best Bar list in 2023.

Neung is proficient in crafting movie inspired cocktails, a niche he expressed through signature cocktails at the movie-inspired bar OFTR. Shaking up the city with cocktails that are named after nose to tail ingredients like Orange and Squid, the sustainable and innovative menu at Mahaniyom is just the spot to explore this bartender’s range.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 14
BARTENDER OF THE YEAR

Royal Oak

595/10, Sukhumvit Soi 33/1, 02-662-1650. Open daily 9am-midnight. You can throw a rock on Sukhumvit Soi 33 and hit about four pubs. Last year, the trusty Royal Oak did a revamp—and not the way you’d think. The classic pub went for light blues and very (very) British portraits. The remodel turned the dark woods into brighter, friendlier space. This is, however, the Royal Oak; it’s still very much a solid pub with solid pub grub. It’s a great way to kick off a weekend—doubly so if you want to head upstairs for some comedy with the Comedy Club Bangkok.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 16
BEST PUB

Mad Bulldog

3/65, Sukhumvit Soi 71, 093-564-4539. Open daily 5pm-late.

A new spot on the scene, Mad Bulldog Pub and Grub opened up earlier this year, riding the line between music dive and pub. In short order they’ve begun drawing in crowds thirsty for their cheap beer, hungry for their adapted pub food like their spicy pad kaprao pizza, and wild for their regular (and loud) live music. The bands bring the noise, and even when there isn’t one playing, they’ve got a projector rolling classic concerts. It’s pet-friendly, and if you don’t have your own, say hello to the resident bulldog.

The Old English

Last year, this spot caused a bit of a stir when they moved from their old spot to a place right at the Phrom Phong BTS. To be fair, the outdoor area suffered a little with the noisy Sukhumvit traffic, but this space still brings daily crowds of regulars and tourists who are looking for cheap beer and good pub food—including some excellent wings. You can find all the matches you’ve been meaning to see in a comfy, cozy space.

The Londoner

1178, Phatthanakan Rd., 02-022-8025. Open Mon-Fri 10am-midnight; Sat-Sun 9am-midnight.

Out of the way for the Sukhumvit crowd—and no worse for it—The Londoner can boast of being one of Bangkok’s oldest microbreweries, shelling out pints since 1997. In the kitchen, Chef Yao builds towers of well portioned pub food, and you can always rely on good beer. More than that, apart from being away from the hurlyburly, The Londoner is a large space with a communal feel—clean, well managed, and up market. It’s as much for families as it is for the regulars. The bar nibbles are also provided by the Potong team.

Ekkamai Beer House

56-56/1, Ekkamai Soi 2, 02-714-3924. Open daily 11:30am-late.

Pubs get a reputation for drawing a—shall we say— more mature crowd. But Ekkamai has shaken off this reputation with their 20 taps, craft beer, TVs, and three floors of party space. Take the gang upstairs for some shuffleboard or hang outside. You’ll find live music on the first floor several days a week and some epic roast dinners on Sunday.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 18
1033, Sukhumvit Soi 53/1 (BTS Thong Lo), 02-392-3361. Open daily 8am-late.
BEST PUB

BEST LIVE MUSIC BAR

41, Charoen Rat Soi 1, 093-592-9902. Open Wed-Thu 6pm-midnight; Fri-Sat 6pm-late; Sun 6pm-midnight.

This venue has been a bit of a rollercoaster over the past year. Roaring back after Covid, things took a dark turn in September 2023 when troublesome neighbors had the joint closed for live events—which curbed most of the venue’s operations. But it didn’t take long for Jam to make its comeback. Punk, techno, metal, experimental, even occasional karaoke, it’s all on at this under-the-overpass dive. This isn’t just where Bangkok bands play. It’s where Bangkok bands are born. This (mostly) standing room only, cozy bar covered in band stickers is the spirit of live music in Bangkok—long may it reign.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 20
Jam

BEST LIVE MUSIC BAR

Speakerbox

1000, 40 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor). Open Wed-Sun 7:30pm-late.

The locals at Speakerbox love this venue above all others. Real music happens here—whether it’s expats playing Rolling Stones covers or Japanese punk—and the venue is tailor made for intimate, wild shows. You might go one night for a mosh pit and the next for jazz or psy trance. Every weekend, Speakerbox packs the house for its music, cheap beer and cocktails, and a venue that delivers proper sound and ambience. Every city should have a Speakerbox.

DeCommune

1-2/F, 469 Phra Sumen Rd., 093-117-1123. Open Tue-Sun 5pm-late.

If you’re giving out points for “cool” for live music venues, DeCommune takes the cake. This venue brings in both DJs and live acts to create what is probably the most stylish live music space in town—always a party, never off-key. When DeCommune moved from Thonglor to Phra Sumen, it reinvigorated the underground music scene. For a lot of local acts, this is the first big stage they play.

Studio Lam

3/1, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-261-6661. Open Tue-Sun 6pm-late.

A little dive, a little music bar—Studio Lam is an institution for the formerly wild spirit of Sukhumvit. Between Thonglor and Phrom Phong, this bar could easily just be considered a live music venue in its own right, but it’s also a fun little oasis from the glitz of the modern Sukhumvit where you can pop in for a few beverages. It’s more divey on the outside than in, and you never know what acts you’ll find here.

Crimson Room

87, Langsuan Rd., 062-259-2525. Open daily 6pm-late.

It’s Langsuan so you know it’s chic, stylish, and a little bit high end. You come to this bar for the music you know and high-end drinks from the team behind Rabbit Hole. The venue skews bright, moody, and art deco. On the stage you’ll find low tempo melodies and foot-tapping tunes that set the tone of the night but don’t overpower conversation.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 22

The Deck BEST

15 Sukhumvit 20 Alley, 095-239-0805. Open Mon-Sat 7:30am-midnight; Sun 7:30am-11pm.

It’s a cafe, bar, and restaurant all rolled up in one Balinese box. The Deck captures tropical vibes and shapeshifts into a warm and welcoming day-to-night hangout spot, perfect for meeting up with friends, family, and you can even bring the pets. The outdoor area is enclosed but maintains the tropical vibe. Don’t miss their comfort food and daily happy hours.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 24
BAR
ALFRESCO

BEST ALFRESCO BAR

Zuma Escape

5F, Emquartier, 02-003-6000. Open daily 5pm-late.

Who knew that a mall-top bar could give you a quick serotonin boost? The beach club theme puts a sunny oasis among the drab skyscrapers of the downtown Sukhumvit. The elevated restaurant zone popping craft beers is great for watching sport events or peeling away from the crowd, and the outdoor cocktail bar is the place to bust out some dance moves by the DJ booth. Their hearty beef sliders, seafood, and spaghetti will keep you going throughout the night.

Hemingway’s

23 Soi Sukhumvit 11, 02-653-3900. Open Mon-Sat 11amlate, Sun 10am-late.

Hemingway’s has a reputation as one of the city’s favorites, especially with the expat crowd. The menu takes you through a well seasoned journey of Mediterranean and North American cuisines: juicy burgers, pizzas, pastas, and other high end comfort bites. Kicking back on the front porch next to the breezy sprawling garden, you can fuel conversation with some crafted cocktails and a premium selection of affordable wines.

G/F, The St. Regis Bangkok, 159 Ratchadamri Rd, 02-1118999. Open Mon-Thurs 11:30am-3pm, 6pm-late; Fri-Sat 11:30am-3pm, 6pm-late; Sun 11am-3:30pm, 6pm-late.

Where else in Bangkok can you get an outdoor izakaya experience at this level? Housed in a five star hotel, this impressive venue oozes luxury and style from the brass accents to the granite walls. Their open-air dining zone is where you can take in some luscious green with a glass of sundowner in hand. Their fusion seasonal Japanese menu puts a zing into their fresh seafood.

Cactus

15 Yen Akat Rd., 083-437-3515. Open Sun-Thurs 5pm-late; Fri-Sat 5pm-late.

With its shaded greens and easy to down refreshing tipple, Cactus makes a strong contender for a relaxing hideaway after working hours. Unlike most venues that’ll confine you to a square box, the bar expands your horizons with an open air zone that’s both fun and comforting. Even more intimate is the rooftop section, complete with some northern Thai delicacies and Mediterranean grub to munch on by the bonfire.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 26

The atmosphere is a tiki bar combined with an American backyard BBQ that eventually turns into a garden party. With tropic-inspired decor, this day-to-night spot is mellow and relaxing, with a view of Lumpini Park. The food is a twist on the classic barbeque with signature farm-to-table dishes. For drinks, think tiki cocktails and beers on tap. DJs hit the decks on the regular, playing everything from electro-funk to contemporary hip-hop. Stay up-to-date with their monthly themed events, such as paella Sundays or taco Tuesdays.

This jazzy bar area has been running a legendary show since 1953—and the drinks and the tunes are still flowing. True to its name, the bar has adapted with the times and comes with a curated list of rare classic cocktails like the Jungle bird and the Woo Woo.

BEST DIVE BAR

Fatty’s Bar and Diner

598/66 Asoke-Din Daeng Rd., 02-245-2965. Open Tue-Sat 11am-midnight; Sun 11am-10pm.

If you’ve got a lot of music and a little Wisconsin in your blood, Fatty’s is the place to be. The staff are invariably welcoming, and food is cooked with love—but, seriously, trust us on the wings.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 34

12x12

810/22, Thara Rom Soi 2, 094-260-4713. Open Tues-Sat 5pm-late.

An intimate spot for DJs and a few live acts, 12x12 is special in that it’s got a dive bar aesthetic with a club feel. When the lights go red and the DJ takes to the decks, 12x12 gets rowdy for the right acts but can still be chill for the casual visitor. You’ll find a selection of Japanese beers along with the classics, and keep in touch to find out what local or international DJs want to play this hidden gem in a residential area between Thonglor and Ekkamai.

F.Orange

1112/4 Soi Plus 1, Sukhumvit Rd., 081-874-6123. Tue-Sun 9pm-late.

It’s cozy, friendly, and a badly needed dash of cool in Phra Khanong. It’s a homey vibe, a spot where you can tuck into a dark corner with some friends or lean on the bar until your elbows hurt. You won’t find a giant cooler full of craft beer or overpriced bar bites; it’s a tropical dive shoved inside a converted shophouse, and DJs spin everything from Japanese disco to Brit-rock.

Jack’s Bar

62/1, Wat Suan Phlu, 089-138-1922. Open daily 11am11:30pm.

If you’re sitting around the west end of town, everyone has that friend who will just say, “Jacks?” And, you’re on your way. A dive possibly but definitely a tourist bar, Jack’s is a waterside institution, a breath of sanity in between the hi-so temples of Shangri-la and the Mandarin Oriental. It’s all about cheap beer, cheap food, plastic chairs, and good vibes well into the night. And the wine isn’t too shabby either. Jack’s has been around long enough to earn its title as the best dive bar on the water, and it’s packed every night.

Cheap Charlie’s

12/2, Sukhumvit Soi 50, 087-096-8444. Open daily 5pm-midnight.

Once upon a time (about seven years ago), Cheap Charlie’s was the spot to be off Soi 11, open in some form since 1982. Then, in 2017, it relocated to Sukhumvit Soi 50. Since then, the bar has well and truly reclaimed its glory for the Onnut and Phra Khanong crowds. Affordable in the extreme, outdoors, and within spitting distance of Easy Burger—you just can’t keep Cheap Charlie’s down.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 35 2024

Havana Social

41, 3 Sukhumvit Rd, 02-821-6111. Open daily 6pm-late.

Havana Social was among the first to nail the speakeasy concept in Bangkok, but the interior is a colonial style Cuban bar smack in the middle of Sukhumvit’s nightlife district. Unlike a lot of the themes bandied about at bars, this place pulls it off—from their regular Latin music to a design that leans into the vibe. What’s more, this is a spot that has remained youthful, loud, and cool. DJ sessions bring the noise, and you can always rely on this space for high energy theatrics like Brazilian street carnival and salsa dances.

BEST THEME BAR

Arcadia Barcade

1112/24, Soi Sukhumvit Plus, Open Tue-Thu 10am-midnight; Fri-Sat 10am-late; Sun 10am-midnight.

Born from Blade Runner, maintained with gaming and craft beer, and always relevant thanks to wild events from movie nights and DJs to pro wrestling and comedy—Arcadia has only been around for two years, but it’s hard to imagine Phra Khanong without it. With handmade arcade machines and a rooftop for shenanigans, Arcadia is right out of the part of the eighties most people were too cool to appreciate. In their fridge, you’ll find a respectable collection of craft beer, kratom from OG Kratom, and wallet-friendly cocktails.

OFTR

245, 11 Sukhumvit 31, 02-004-2429. Open Sun-Wed 6pm-midnight; Thu-Sat 6pm-late.

Subway and train trends are on the up, but OFTR (short for Nattawut “Baz” Poonpiriya’s 2021 film “One for the Road) does it best with that special cinematic touch. The space resembles a New York dive bar in one of the films’ last shots. With the bar’s film namesake produced by Wong Kar-wai, you know to expect an intimate and stylised feast for the eyes. Baz even got Mahaniyom’s co-founder and bartender Ronnaporn “Neung” Kanivichaporn to make 10 signature cocktails in reference to the movie.

Midsummer Night’s Dream Untitled

171 Soi Sukhumvit 63, 098-258-1157. Open daily 7pm-late.

Conquering the bar scene in Nana and Yaowarat with Teens of Thailand, Asia Today, Tax, and Independence bar, Yolo Group branched out in 2022 to set up a tongue in cheek bar in the middle of Thonglor. Found in one of the most affluent parts of town, guests enter what appears like a pawnshop, satirizing the class disparity and poking a little fun at the customers. Fermented fish sauce, cactus, medicinal plants, are just some of the unique ingredients found in the upscale mix.

61/2 Thong Lo, 082-646-0949. Open daily 6pm-midnight.

If you need some refreshers to go with your Shakespeare, you’re in luck. This four-story speakeasy does one of the world’s most famous literary classics justice, attracting the English majors and cocktail lovers under one roof. It also helps that the first floor belongs to a flower store, Wynn Wood Florist. The autumnal foliage and blooms come in handy when setting the scene of an enchanted forest, adding some aromatic floral signatures to stimulate the senses.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 37 2024

Hair of the Dog

593 27, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-030-2538. Open daily 11am-midnight.

From the design to the fridge, Hair of the Dog takes craft beer seriously. Yes, it’s where you go for beers you can’t find anywhere else, but it’s also where you can chill to some metal and classic rock while watching old ’80s movies in a morgue-themed bar. With Breakfast Story upstairs and a little something for the gin crowd, what really puts Hair of the Dog in Phrom Phong over the top is their occasional beer tastings, bringing rare brews to the beer lovers of Bangkok in an entertaining, informative way.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 38
BEST BEER BAR

Mikkeller

26, Ekkamai Soi 10, 082-283-1274. Open Mon-Fri 5pm-midnight; Sat-Sun 11am-midnight.

Mikkeller celebrated 10 years of supplying Bangkokians with beer this year, and this city still loves this spot—an outdoor, friendly, laidback beer spot for people who like a lot of taps and space. Set in a 50s-era Thai house on Ekkamai Soi 10, you’ll find a startlingly diverse range of bottles alongside the 30 taps. The customer base here is loyal, so you can probably look forward to another decade of Mikkeller.

Chitbeer

219/266, Baan Suan Palm, Koh Kret, 089-799-1123. Open Sat-Sun noon-9pm.

Chit Beer opened Chithole just last year, but their OG spot still has our hearts. Sure, it’s a bit of a trek just north of Nonthaburi, but it’s a day trip from downtown well worth the effort for the craft beer, river views, and good company. It’s been the best reason to visit Koh Kret for a long time now, and you’ll find 10 taps serving everything from the homegrown Soi Beer to Dark Night Stout and a fully stocked fridge of rare finds.

Brewski

30/F, Radisson Blu Plaza, 489, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-302-3333. Open daily 5pm-late.

A beer bar? On a rooftop? That’s right. Brewski may not have the widest selection and likely won’t be on the list for any uber-serious craft beer lovers, but they definitely elevate the beer bar concept to a place you might want to take a date. This spot sits 30 stories above the center of Sukhumvit, and beers here start at just B70. You’ll find their 12 taps on the chalkboard above the bar, ranging from Fresh Haze IPA to Elvis Juice. They also boast some decent cocktails along with excellent bar bites.

Eight Days a Week Homebar

24, Soi Pradiphat 14, 082 463 9561. Open daily 5pm-midnight.

A simple, no-nonsense beer space, Eight Days a Week Homebar is for the proper beer connoisseur and draws plenty of love from its Ari regulars. What’s more, this is a spot that’s doing its level best to support local beer. With live music featuring everything from homegrown artists to the local bluegrass scene as well as plenty of outdoor seating, you can safely call this sort of beer bar a community.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 39 2024

Mod Kaew

142, Soi Sueksa Wittaya, Sathorn Soi 12, 082-096-028. Open Mon 4pm-midnight; Wed-Fri 4pm-midnight; Sat-Sun noon-midnight.

Mod Kaew Wine Bar is simply (and seemingly effortlessly) Bangkok’s best wine bar. Moving into their new space in June of last year, the concept is entertaining and friendly, with personalized service and an excellent wine selection. The space does not adhere to trends; it is a no-frills service. With an artistic and uniquely funky twist, this is a wine bar for everyone—whether you know your grapes or not. This is reflected in the list, which varies from some of the best low-intervention wines available in Bangkok to a selection of Spanish and French wines, including many difficult-to-find labels. You’ll also find that natty wines take up 30 percent of their menu.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 40
BEST WINE BAR

No Bar Wine Bar Independence

687 Maitri Chit Rd., 084-005-229., Open daily 8pm-late.

Brought to you by the minds behind Teens of Thailand, Asia Today, and Black King Monkey, Independence Bar specializes in wine and wine-based cocktails in a whole new way. The venue took over an abandoned motorcycle repair shop, creating a sort of New York City subway with its graffiti-covered walls by Thai artists, fluorescent lights, and raw design. The playlist includes a combination of AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and other classic rock groups. Try the Madeira Tonic, a sweet, effervescent drink prepared from the Portuguese fortified wine Barbeito Madeira.

128/10, Soi Phaholyothin 2, 099-229-7465. Open Wed-Sun 6pm-late.

Ari’s local and innovative natural wine bar is welcoming and intimate. This spot hosts various collaborative initiatives, dinners, and wine tastings, and the atmosphere is cozy and reminiscent of a friend’s house party. Here, it’s easygoing enough for a casual date or solo outing with a book. The wine varieties are extensive and the pricing affordable. The unpretentious staff are knowledgeable, so this is an ideal spot to ask as many questions as you want.

Cloud Wine The Wine Market

12, Sukhumvit 50, 082-833-5522. Open daily 5pm-late.

Wine drinking doesn’t have to be stuffy. The Wine Market is a low-key gem tucked away in On Nut’s best place to party, throwing distance to the likes of Cheap Charlie’s and Easy Burger. The wine list combines old-world and new-world wines from around the globe that are reasonably priced, and the staff are always happy to answer any questions. Space inside is quite limited—but who wants to sit inside at Wine Market? The best thing to do is grab a table alfresco, grab a bottle, and get rowdy over a charcuterie board.

The Commons Saladaeng, 30, Saladaeng Soi 1, 098-814-8997. Open daily 11am-2pm, 5pm-11pm.

This hip, chic wine bar in The Commons Saladaeng offers a range of primarily organic and biodynamic wines. Cloud Wine is cozy and the staff are passionate about their vino. With a wine selection from small producers worldwide, their choice of Australian low-intervention wines are impressive, and they offer some impressive French and Spanish wines at a very reasonable price. And, of course, being situated in the Commons means you can sip your wine and snack from different vendors.

The OSS Bar

6, Kasem San Soi 2, 063-273-0719. Open daily 6pm-midnight.

After renovations in Jim Thompson’s F&B wing, the newly minted OSS Bar was unveiled earlier this year with a sleek spy-theme, a reference to clandestine life of the eponymous silk king Jim Thompson. Entering the speakeasy, you feel like you’re being transplanted into a secret society lounge on a Hollywood film set. The jazzy ambiance in a Thai teak heritage frame along with the greenery below has become a hot spot to sip cocktails and scroll through the chapters of Jim Thimpson’s enigmatic life.

BEST NEW DESIGN

Fuchsia

2, 1 and 2/2 Decho Rd., Suriya Wong, 065-057-8977. Open Wed-Sun 8pm-late.

It’s one of the hottest clubs to open this year, and it’s a design you won’t soon forget. When the team behind Bar Marco, Rabbit Hole, and Crimson Room launched Fuschia in Silom, they really pulled out all the stops. Retro futuristic railings, iron fixtures, and dancing poles invite a hedonistic feel to this sometimes wild spot. Amidst the plush velvet seats and neon pink lighting, the club’s alternate steampunk universe is the ultimate escape.

Sundry

1018, 8 Rama IV Rd., 094-992-9562. Open daily 6pm-late. The sun never sets in Sundry town. Among the neutral colored skyscrapers, the four storey establishment is easy to spot with its burnt sienna coating. The shades on each floor are a slow gradient of the colors from dusk to dawn. Upon its arrival, the ground floor greets guests with a revolving selection of art shows. The floors above serve as a Thai tapas restaurant, studio bar, and an area for more low-key hangouts.

Tulum Iron Fairies Music Bar

29/F, Movenpick Ekkamai, 559 Soi Sukhumvit 63, 082-9730275. Open daily 5pm-late.

Like opening a portal into an enchanted land, the gates of Iron Fairies open up to something that resembles a steampunk Victorian drinking den. After closing down due to the pandemic, the venue dusts off some of its rust and resurrected itself with more vibrancy. The ceilings are decked out in vials of “fairy dust” and their Instagram famous gothic gargoyles statues lurk around the corners of the room. Slot yourself into one of their leather-worn sofas and enjoy a night of strong signature cocktails with some live tunes.

Perched on top of Movenpick Ekkamai, Tulum Sky Bar is a homage to the Mexican seaside town known for being a summer and party destination for the affluent crowd. Aztec patterns and sprawling vines reinforce the jungle theme. A modern interpretation of Tulum’s Ven A La Luz sculpture is an immediate attraction. But it’s not just the furniture that is setting the tone, the DJs here are pumping out some tropical and latin beats to go with their jungle shows, pole, and fire dancing.

Sing Sing Theatre

45, Sukhumvit Soi 45, 063-225-1331. Open Tues-Sat 9pm-late.

Since its debut in 2016, Sing Sing Theatre has established itself as a premier party destination, thanks to its consistently high-quality programming and visiting acts—never too stuffy and always wild. They offer events throughout the week, with international DJs spinning the decks. Australian Ashley Sutton designed the venue, inspired by 1930s Hollywood visions of Shanghai, fitted with lanterns, painted umbrellas, wooden dragons, and plenty of neon lights. The space isn’t so big that you’ll lose track of your friends, and it’s intimate enough to dance with your crew.

BK B.A.D. AWARDS 44
BEST NIGHTCLUB

Fuchsia

2, 1 and 2/2 Decho Rd., Suriya Wong, 065-057-8977. Open Wed-Sun 8pm-late.

A huge and welcome addition to Bangkok’s nightlife ecosystem, Fuchsia’s designs are bold and daring, with art nouveau decor and a deep pink color scheme throughout the two-story space. The nights are lively, with professional shows by pole dancers and well-known DJs. With excellent sound quality, their cutting-edge projection mapping is an entertaining addition. The drinks are feminine and florally inspired. There’s a reason why this luxurious nightclub attracts some of the most fashionable Gen-Zers in Bangkok.

Never Normal

35/37, Ladphrao, Soi 18, 083-838-2762. Open Thur - Sat 7pm-late.

If you think clubbing doesn’t exist in Lat Phrao, think again. Never Normal is the hidden spot every techno head raves about. It can feel like a house party but it never fails to bring in renowned DJs from around the globe for big nights. Its far-off location gives it a bit of an illegal rave vibe—in other words, you can expect some of the best parties in town, with hard-hitting techno, house, and deep underground music. It’s the one-stop shop for a good time, complete with a cafe providing coffee and beverages until late.

Mustache

Young Place, Sukhumvit 23, 063-017-8555. Open Thu-Sat 9pm-late.

No one does techno like Mustache. This underground rave is as near to a night out in Berlin as you can get, a rare late-night club that has maintained a steady roster of excellent acts. Mustache’s venue has cutting-edge sound systems and epic state-of-the-art lighting to give you a dynamic experience. Known for hosting some of the hottest club nights and monthly party takeovers in Bangkok, it draws an expat-heavy clientele, and, as a bonus, you can find affordably priced drinks.

12 x 12

810/22 Sukhumvit 55 Soi Thararom 2, 094-260-4713. Open Tue-Sat 5pm-late.

Hidden away in an unassuming soi is Thonglor’s hipster playground, super cool without even trying. The DIY vibe makes you feel like you’re partying in someone’s living room, with mismatched couches and lights. Boasting a small and private dance floor and a stomping sound system, nights are usually thrown with up-and-coming DJs playing low-key, after-hours sets; no specific genre, just quality. But what will keep you coming back is the friendly and inviting crowd.
