The closure is part of a sad trend that’s also seen the likes of Moose, Overground, Hemingway’s and Bangkok Betty shut down in recent months.

Guns N’ Roses is happening, for real We were worried there for a moment. Hua Hin-Pattaya ferry to launch on Jan 1 A privately-run ferry service between the two coastal towns will commence at the start of next year, cutting the travel time from 4+ hours to less than 2 hours. The service, operated

by Royal Passenger Liner Co., will initially only offer daily round-trips to a capacity of 150 people. Fare details to follow.

CP just launched a new vending machine selling the same frozen food you get in 7-Eleven but with the addition of a built-in microwave. Photos of the first orange “Foodie” machine at Thammasat University went viral, with social media split on the matter. Some laud the extra convenience, while others question what the spread of such preservative-filled food means for small vendors trying to make an honest living.

We’d love to be right with you in your outpourings of sympathy for the Overstay, really. Supporting indie venues and urban subcultures is exactly the kind of right-on cause which good liberals like us can get behind. But isn’t smoking pot what your couch is for? So while the rest of Bangkok nightlife reopens and resumes as normal this weekend (see BK Now, page 22), go support those surviving venues doing great music and drinks. They need it.

S.E.A. Write award writer Prabda Yoon, 43, recently made his directorial debut with Motel Mist, which opened in Bangkok on Nov 17 after touring around film festivals worldwide. Here, he opens up about the reality of Thailand’s independent film scene, the mystery around Thai motels, and the future relevance of Article 112.

It has been almost a year since your film debuted at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Why so long to screen in Thailand?

International Film Festival Rotterdam needed some world-premiere movies. Then other festivals contacted me to screen with them as well. There are so many steps to getting a movie screened in Thailand, especially money. You have to have budget to rent the cinemas.

There is also anxiety about the censorship. Luckily Motel Mist got an 18+ rating here.

How challenging are the local censors for you?

It’s not as critical as some other countries like Singapore or Indonesia, which are much more restrictive about religion and sex. What frustrates directors and artists here is the unpredictable nature of the censorship board. There are no clear standards. Some movies can make fun of monks but others can’t. It’s all about what the board feels; they follow their own attitudes rather than a set of standards.

Many films choose to screen at foreign film festivals before Thailand. Why is this?

I can’t speak for everyone but I chose international platforms

because there is no guarantee that I will make money here. Finding funds in Thailand is hard. Sometimes you need to fund projects yourself, and there’s a chance you’ll lose money in renting cinemas for no return. There have been movies that screen in cinemas for three weeks and only get B10,000 back. It’s not worth it. At the same time, international platforms welcome independent filmmakers who are interested in making art rather than mass movies. If their work really stands out, industry insiders will recognize them and bring them credit. Directors can also build revenue and widen their experience at film festivals.

Why did you choose to base your directorial debut in a motel?

I feel there is something mysterious going on in those spaces. The architecture of motels themselves also really strikes me—these 1970s and 1980s buildings with curtains covering the entrance to each room, which is pretty unique from motels in other countries. The rooms are like boxes stacked next to each other but with different stories going on in each one. Thais ignore them.

People who drive past them every day never give them much thought, while those inside don’t want to let anyone know they’re using them. So

there’s a mysterious feeling of isolation around these places.

You have been at the center of Article 112 allegations before.

How do you feel about the new royal era?

I always say that we need to accept the basic human right that people who think differently from others have the same right to exist in society without fear. I don’t ask Thailand to be a Western democracy, but our society hasn’t yet accepted liberal thought. Those who are in power must modernize if we are to reduce conflict. History shows that these people are not that wise and do not care what other people think anyway. It’s possible that the situation will remain as tense and we’ll see more violence. It’s hard to say. We’re in a period where everything is inactive. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

Acres of concrete, plants and steel are devoted to communal courtyards and nightlife venues at this community mall. Perhaps best are the potent cocktails at Evil Man Blues and the warehouse-style clubbing experience at Beam. Also check out the cocktails and house-party atmosphere at UNCLE, the Mexican-inspired tapas of Melbourne-born Touche Hombre, the barbecue fare at Lady Brett and the Chinese buns of Little Bao. On Saturday and Sunday, they all team up for 72 Weekend, a brunch party on the terrace (noon-6pm).

Above Riva is the latest shop-house boutique hotel in Tha Tien, the neighborhood opposite Wat Arun. Head up to its rooftop—stairs only—and you’ll find an alfresco terrace where practically every table gets prime river views. Dishes add a Thai touch to Western classics, from light bites like deep-fried calamari served with a salted egg yolk and shrimp roe sauce (B325), to a take on osso bucco (braised veal) in massaman curry (B720).

Attitude

This rooftop restaurant-slash-bar sits on the 26th floor of the new riverside Avani hotel. It's all very sharing- and booze-friendly, which translates to artfully presented tapas plates with the odd nod to Asian flavors. Lamb shoulder arrives in the form of lollipops (B340) and smoked duck lacquered in fish sauce with a tea-flavored gel (B220). Also look out for the premium produce like tsarskaya oysters (B140/piece) and Australian wagyu tomahawk (B4,950). French mixologist Alexandre Hersent rolls out refreshing signature cocktails like the Bora Bora Paradise Island (Absolut pear vodka, curacao, Joseph Cartron banana liqueur, apple juice and coconut ice cream, B380).

Freebird

Over at the grill at one of the latest rooftop bars in town, they cook up some amazing local beef from French butcher Arnaud Carre (of Arno's)—one of the most respected food names in town. Char takes up the top two stories of the recently opened Hotel Indigo, with a stylish dining room downstairs and the rooftop bar up above to benefit from those amazing views across Bangkok's "Embassy Row." Steaks start at B650 for 180g of 100-day grain-fed Black Angus.

Italian cuisine courtesy of one of Bangkok's most lauded chefs (Norbert Kostner), a riverside terrace and the Mandarin Oriental's iconic Author's Lounge in the background make this one of the river's easiest spots to recommend.

It's more casual than the other restaurants at Bangkok's oldest hotel (though they'll still shoo you away if you turn up in shorts), dishing out Italian staples like wood-fired pizzas (starting B340) and beef stew with polenta cream and gorgonzola (B610).

A huge rotisserie oven imported from France dominates this warm, rusticated restaurant, telling you everything you need to know about Cocotte’s food: simple, on the bone, portioned for sharing and heavy on the meat (don’t miss the massive tomahawk, from B3,750/1.4kg).

That’s not to say their vegetable dishes aren’t great too, especially the salad made from up to 15 Northern Thailand-grown vegetables (B360). Sit out on the terrace and you avoid the dining room’s weird red lighting.

Char

The year’s most anticipated restaurant hides a few outdoor tables up on its top floor, where a brutalist raw concrete balcony overlooks Sathorn Soi 12.

Fresh, simple, well-executed, original yet devoid of gimmicks, there's a reason Bunker’s food has people excited. Some of it verges on tapas portions, but the flavors are anything but small: wagyu tartar spiked with daikon radish (B400); cured foie gras paired with candied cashew and chili mango (B550); smoky wagyu short rib glistening with fat (B2,300 for 2-person). Cocktails from Diageo World Class 2015 finalist Natakorn Changrew complete the package.

Designer Alan Barr’s striking reinvention of a house at the quiet end of Sukhumvit Soi 47 puts the backyard to use with some lively and lounge-y garden furniture. The restaurant brings together freshly brewed coffee, modern Australian cuisine and well-paired cocktails.

Try our favorite, the slow-roasted ocean trout with wakame butter, caviar and pennywort (B1,600 for a 900g fillet).

The Summer House Project

Set in an 80-year-old colonial-style house, this voodoo-themed bar brings a touch of mystery to Bangkok’s nightlife. On top of live jazz, weekends also see visits from a fortune teller.

As well as cocktails named after zodiac signs (B290), they also have 12 different mojito flavors (B290). The outdoor area connects with Mahanaga, a Thai-fusion restaurant from the same owner.

This grand old villa reborn as a cocktail lounge and Italian grill restaurant boasts some of Bangkok's most incredible cocktails—head bartender Pailin “Milk” Sajjanit just got named Southeast Asia Bartender of the Year at the 2016 Diageo World Class awards. The adjoining restaurant specializes in charcoal-grilled cuts of seriously premium meat (Spain’s dry-aged rubia gallega is the star of the show at B5,400 per kilo), best enjoyed on a seat from the spacious garden terrace.

The Commons

The Missing Burro

The chic terrace at this very upmarket take on a Spanish tapas joint is the place to be spotted with Soi Ruamrudee's in-crowd. A former chef de cuisine at El Bulli had a hand in the menu, which dishes out refined versions of tapas staples like Iberico ham croquettes (B480), grilled octopus tentacles served with beans in Castilian stew (B460), baked fish fillet with potatoes and almonds and the highlight Josper-grilled, Segovian-style suckling pig (B680).

The same owners as Ekkamai live music spot Baan Puen dish out a solid menu of signature cocktails (from B260) as well as food worthy of a full-blown restaurant (our favorite: larb omelet, B145). Ignore the space downstairs and head straight up to the open-air terrace, which hosts live music every evening with a focus on '90s retreads amid checkered floors, dangling greenery and sheets billowing from the ceiling.

The renovated house on Soi Goethe sits peacefully in grounds that include a cozy outdoor terrace where you can dine outdoors, lounge on a sofa or play a game of petanque. The chef, Nino Scognamillo, takes La Casa Nostra in a comforting direction with creations like grilled Sardinian pecorino cheese with eucalyptus honey and fresh figs (B180), paprika-spiced roasted octopus on potato veloute (B490), and plenty of pasta dishes. Owing to the partnership with Global Vineyards, their wine menu is a peach. Try the 2011 Chateau Gigault Cuvee Viva (B175/75ml, B280/125ml, B1,400/bottle).

Chef Thanunya “Gai” Kaikaew is the only female chef from the Iron Chef Thailand TV show. Her specialty lies in sweets, so it’s no surprise that desserts star at her restaurant. The lovely wooden house and garden it inhabits wouldn’t be packed out on weekends were it only for vanilla souffles (B220), though. Thanunya also has a solid savory menu with plenty of brunchy nods; and she is backed by impeccable service.

Top Knot

Starchitect Duangrit Bunnag followed up Never Ending Summer with this Euro bistro with a vast terrace that leads right up to the water. Comfort food like fisherman’s stew (B240), crab cakes (B350) and beer-battered fish and chips (B550) go down as easily as bar manager Dheeradon Dissara's Thai-infused cocktails. Try the Gold Gold Gold (prosecco, mango puree and gold leaves, B350) and Pina Pamila (Malibu, rum and palm juice, B300).

Good food takes center stage at the loft-like, open-plan community mall from the siblings behind Roast cafe. The ambitious project works kind of like a food court, only a really, really good one. Diners can order their favorite dishes from the various food kiosks—fusion burgers from Soul Food 555, Mexican from Barrio Bonito, pies from Holy Moly, to name a few— then dine at the central communal area inside or outside. Don’t forget to check out the cocktails at Track 17 (prices hover around B360).

This Mexican spot sits in a garden down the surprisingly peaceful Thonglor Soi 7, far from the bustle of the main drag. And the Mexican owners’ traditional corn tortilla tacos are so good you’ll want to keep the place a secret.

The carnitas (braised pork, B280) comes with a mind-blowing sauce made with imported Mexican chilies. Other fillings include al pastor (spiced marinated pork with pineapple, B280) and choriqueso (house-made chorizo mixed with melted cheese, B300). Wash your meal down with a Day of the Dead beer (B220) or margarita (B240).

Sitting on top of Hotel Once, this multi-level bar and grill offers 360-degree views from its upper level. You come here for quiet, intimate evenings and small gatherings among friends in an area of the city which is only just waking up to nightlife—but which has the authentic atmosphere of old Bangkok. The food menu however is not so Thai, offering a selection of barbecue specials like pork, chicken, beef, salmon and shrimp as well as pastas. To drink, it's cocktails or local and imported beers.

Alfresco 54th-story views complement fresh, Mediterranean decor that feels anything but stuffy. It's a fitting backdrop for an equally laidback menu of authentic tapas: some 40-odd treats like Joselito ham (B790-1,290), live Boston lobster sashimi (B1,200), oysters (B160190), Cochinillo suckling pig (B1,490, serves 2-4 people) and wild porcini mushroom croquettes (B190). Thirsty? There's a whopping 36 wines by the glass here.

Northern Kitchen The luxurious Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai (www.fourseasons.com/ chiangmai) has launched a new cooking school, and it’s an absolute stunner. Designed by Bill Bensley, one the most highly regarded landscape architects in the world, Rim Tai Kitchen features an exquisite, multi-tiered wooden chandelier above a long table. The open kitchen stations boast large mortars and wok stoves where you can try your hand at traditional Lanna dishes, made with lots of Royal Projects produce, in one of the group morning classes (B6,500 per person) or private classes (B8,500 per person). From Dec 15 until midFeb, members of the Bangkok and Hong Kong Zuma teams will cook up Japanese robata grill dishes like spicy beef tenderloin with sesame, red chili and sweet soy, miso-marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf, and sliced yellowtail with chili relish, ponzu and pickled garlic. The weird, reddish soup tastes like someone accidentally dropped a jar of pickled bamboo shoots in the pot. It overpowers just about everything in there. (B120)

More like a soupy version of mapo tofu (Spicy Sichuan-style tofu.) Despite a heavy acidity and sourness, some tasters called this mild and comforting. (B120)

Deep-fried rolls

These look and taste pretty similar to Thai-style spring rolls, filled with glass noodles and bits of pork and vegetables, only the layers of pastry are considerably thicker. (B95)

This chunky, oversized roll is greasy and comes with a weird taste from both the egg-covered, tortilla-like shell and stir-fried veggie filling. One bite and we had to put it down. (B70)

Beef chow mein

The thin noodles come overcooked to the point they’re mushy in your mouth. Despite the visible presence of lots and lots of beef, the taste here is simply salty with only the subtlest hint of beansprout. (B170)

Good ol’ comforting fried rice with nothing but egg and a few peas. A little boring, yes, but it tastes just as it does in the UK, our resident Brit assures us. It does come at a very friendly price, too. (B60)

Kung Pao chicken

This colorful stir-fry comes spiked with chili, making for one sweat-inducing dish. However, the dry, cubed chicken breast won’t appeal to fans of fattier, more tender meat. (B180)

Sweet and sour chicken

Though the dry chicken breast comes hidden inside a doughy batter, this gooey, red-tinted dish is packed with spices and good stir-fry notes. We only wish it weren’t so teeth-shatteringly sweet. (B170)

This little burger joint below Chong Nonsi station walks the line between fast-food and gourmet burgers. While there are chopping boards as plates, decorative ferns and craft beers, there are also no-nonsense condiments, branded cardboard containers and not a single mention of wagyu in sight. To taste, the standard cheeseburger (B209/B289 with a soft drink and fries) tells a similar story. The beef is tasty, no doubt. They tout that it’s from Australia and ground fresh daily. The result, grilled to your specification of doneness, is a patty which glistens with tangy meat juice and retains a nicely satisfying coarseness, but no crowd-stopper. Our biggest gripe is its size—the flimsy

Nuevo Latino cuisine was born in M i a m i , w h e re a cc l a i m e d Cu b a n American chef Douglas Rodriguez (“the godfather of Nuevo Latino cuisine”) grew up and learned his culinary skills.

In short, the cuisine borrows flavors from Cuba and other Spanish-speaking countries. When Azul opened in June with the aim of introducing Bangkok to t h i s f u s i o n c u i s i n e, we we re immediately taken by its courageous menu of grilled meats, sandwiches, ceviches and empanadas (pastries), but feared it would fly under the radar due to its location (ground floor of a small hotel) and uninspiring, u n n e cess a r i l y f l a s hy d e co r. Fa st forward five months and the restaurant h a s g o n e t h ro u g h s o m e s e r i o u s changes. The low-key folded menu of unfamiliar dishes packed with interesting ingredients has been

Not so with the garlic-marinated and deep-fried Japanese mushroom burger (CK burger, B155), which drips with so much oil it would make any katsu master shudder. They do however get the fries right: a no-frills, hungerbusting portion of perfectly crisp and all-too-moreish potato. Pity that on our last visit they were out of cheese to make them cheesy fries. Ditto the Oreo milkshake. The banoffee milkshake (B145) we opted for instead lacks the flavor of both banana and toffee, but does have plenty of straw-cloggingly dense, creamy appeal (we’re told they use ice cream from Creamery). With good burgers seriously lacking around Chong Nonsi, Beef & Shake has what it takes to satisfy any greasy cravings, and does so in a clean, inviting space free from the stench of an over-worked burger griddle. But with Daniel Thaiger’s truck parking up across the street at Sathorn Square every Wednesday lunchtime, we’d rather wait till then.

Besides these fillers, there are still dishes that impress. The pumpkin seed-crusted, cream cheese-stuffed jalapeno peppers (B220) are served piping hot in contrast with a cold ranch sauce, resulting in a bite that’s a s a t i s f y i n g m i x o f h o t a n d co l d , creaminess and crispiness. The chef’s fun tweaks remain in the crabmeat empanadas (B180), served with a mango salsa that packs a hint of Thai seafood s auce, or the warm and deeply-flavored stewed duck ropa vieja (B260), served with poached egg on a grilled corn cake. The tender and flavorful braised lamb shank (B480) comes with a side of smooth, mashed t a r o t h a t ’ s a l s o a r e a l w i n n e r.

Unfortunately, the Cuban sandwich (B240), a pressed sandwich featuring roast pork, ham, cheese and pickles, retains little of its original charm, let down by overly dry pork and bland flavors. It’s served with tasty, if oily, yuca fries. None of the creative desserts that initially studded the menu remain, so you’ll have to make do with a serviceable chocolate lava cake or creme brulee. All in all, there are enough reasons to give Azul’s Nuevo Latino cuisine a try, but it sadly feels like a restaurant going through an identity crisis.

Wild & Co. An old pre-game favorite returns as a meat-centric bar and restaurant.

The buzz: The house that used to be music and booze institution Stu-fe is back in operation again with a wild and meaty theme.

Though the concept is new, the owners (some of whom are partners in live music bar Loy Shy) still aim to make it a destination for music lovers.

The decor: Amid a lush garden sit two glasshouses, one dedicated to the bar and the other to a proper dining space. The bar takes over the original Stu-fe structure, keeping the exact same floor plan but now embracing lots of plants and stuffed animals to follow the forest-y theme. Attached to it is the kitchen, where you can see the chefs at work through the windows.

The food: Dusit Thani College graduate Chatphon Thavornvanit (who’s also behind Munchies for Munchies sausages) heads the kitchen, which focuses mainly on hefty meat dishes, especially game. His rabbit comes bacon-wrapped with kidney, liver and greens dressed with rabbit jus (B690), and sits alongside venison tenderloin, as well as smoked meat which he prepares in a big smoker you can see from the dining room. Try the smoked duck salad (B540) and smoked beef rib (B2,490). Be prepared for large sharing portions like the 1.2kg of tomahawk (B3,290), too. And of course, sausage dishes are also available, like the Munchies bangers and mash (beef and smoked pork sausages with mashed potato, B540) and rabbit sausage (B590).

The drinks: The compact menu lists classics like negroni (B320) and whiskey sour (B320). You can also ask for craft local brews, stocked on a rotating basis. Be warned that there’s a golden bell situated not far from the bar—ring it and the entire house is expected to down a shot.

Chocolate God Belgium’s 90-year-old luxury chocolate brand Godiva (2/F, CentralWorld, 999/9 Rama 1 Rd.) finally brings its trademark truffles, biscuits and chocolate drinks to Bangkok. But while the rest of the world is currently enjoying the brand’s silky smooth softserve ice cream and chocolate-coated strawberries, we’ll have to wait just a little longer for such treats, which are expected to arrive by the end of the year. All the wood waste comes from tropical hardwoods like teakwood and rosewood, making the eco board highly durable even in tropical weather.

Why it’s great: Made of solid wood like walnut, ash and teak, this bench takes its name for the Thai word for distance. That’s because its unique design tapers at its ends, allowing friends to huddle in the middle, or strangers to sit at each end.

Why it’s great: This black steel and oakwood coffee table is inspired by a dragonfly’s wing.

The craftsmanship, in particular the ironwork, is stunning. Use them as end tables or get two to form a complete dragonfly.

Why it’s great: The chair’s structure is made of galvanized steel, an industrial material used outdoors for its highly durable nature.

This chair should last 50 years even in outdoor conditions, but its rough industrial look will look right at home in your exposed-brick interior, too.

Why it’s great: The collection of wooden tableware is made in Northern Thailand and its design evokes the traditional striped furoshiki bags in Japan. The items even come in their own cotton bag, a nice packaging touch.
