Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra makes shock departure from the BMA to join Korean kitchen-based theater performance Cookin’ Nanta.

In a move that has stunned Thailand’s political pundits, the troubled Bangkok governor has renounced his position with City Hall to take up a life on the road with Korea’s smash culinary theater performance which blends electrifying dance acts and acrobatics with live cooking performances.

M.R. Sukhumbhand made the shock announcement following a widely publicized rift with Democrat leader Abhisit “Mark” Vejjajiva, which has seen Bangkok’s governor hiding out in Portugal and avoiding Mark’s phone calls even more than before.

“It’s a new challenge all right,” the baby-faced governor said about the dramatic U-turn in his career. “But I never had much trouble making people laugh governing a city of, what is it, 11 million? So doing it in front of an audience of 1,000 should be a doddle.”

Keen traveler Sukhumbhand also said he’s looking forward to touring with the sell-out comedy show which, with 12 countries lined up for the 2016 calendar year, will mean a more relaxed travel itinerary than he managed to keep up while governing Bangkok.

Cookin’ Nanta’s head choreographer, Dae Ho Kim, held a press conference Thursday to confirm the decision. “We’ve been eyeing Sukhumbhand for some time now. He’s cheeky, he’s lovable, and we just know he’ll fit right in with the world of Korean comedy theater.”

However, Kim did also admit to some early problems working with the novice performer. “When I tried to contact him to see how he’s getting on with the choreography, all I got was a message from his spokesperson telling me Sukhumbhand was out of the country and would be unable to meet me indefinitely.”

City Hall released this statement about the move: “For the past seven years M.R. Sukhumbhand has served the city well, but if the governor feels his talents will be better used on the stage, wowing audiences through exhilarating, perfectly-timed live cooking demonstrations, we wish him all the best.”

INTERVIEW Sakda Sae-Aew, aka Sia Thairath, 62, has made his name on the Thai political scene for his satirical cartoons that have run on page three of the country’s leading newspaper, Thairath, for over two decades. Branded the “red-shirt cartoonist,” he made headlines himself last October when the army summoned him for attitude adjustment due to his work, much of which is critical towards the junta. Here, he speaks to BK about the pressures of making political commentary in Thailand.

How did you feel when you were summoned?

I was a bit surprised but stayed calm. It happened right after General Prayuth Chan-ocha came back from the UN event in October. The army officers stormed into Thairath seeking me but I never actually sit and work at their offices, so they told Thairath to contact me and tell me to go to The Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters. I went and met with the army, who had Xerox copies of lots of my cartoons and said they might sue me for some of my work, such as the airport link scandal picture. I knew I wasn’t in any trouble as I could explain every single cartoon I drew—none are just made up.

It all comes from the news; I just pick which stories to turn into cartoons.

They finally released me and told me to be available any time they want to reach me.

How has your work changed since?

It’s pretty normal in general but I am more careful. I have to think a lot

before finalizing each cartoon, and whether I could be sued for it. I must admit that it’s pretty much 100-percent self-censorship.

Have you ever faced something like this before?

Since I started my job in 1978, journalists have faced this sort of thing many times, but it’s mostly just talk. There was one case, however, which I felt was really serious. I was charged under Article 112 during Abhisit’s government. I drew a cartoon depicting Abhisit as a puppet of Suthep Thaugsuba, but my depiction of Suthep was too slim and they accused me of drawing His Majesty’s face. The case went on for three years before I was finally cleared of all charges.

How do you feel about being branded as biased?

It’s OK. I actually do take sides. For three decades I have stood by the same position, which is democracy and justice. I’m against all kinds of

violence and dictatorship. Everyone is equal and has the same rights. If you don’t like the government, then the system already allows you to get rid of them in four years. But as long as I can remember, it always ends in two years because powerful people who’ve lost their privileges can never wait.

How do you feel about the current political system?

It’s hard to reconcile as being just.

Cases against one side are moving forward so fast while those against another side are frozen. I think they should give politicians the chance to be involved in drafting the new constitution. What right do those currently in power have to define our future for the next 20 years? Even elected governments don’t have such a right— they only get four years to govern.

Vision With the new MRT purple line between Khlong Bang Phai-Tao Poon set to open later this year, we look at what developments Bangkok public transport could potentially deliver by 2020. Fingers crossed!

BTS Sukhumvit line

The MRT purple line Set to officially launch on Mother’s Day, Aug 12, the first section of the much-delayed MRT purple line will run from Khlong Bang PhaiTao Pun. A trial period will commence in May, when you can ride for free, before the full fare kicks in (B14-42). This line is a muchwelcomed development for residents of Nonthaburi. Of note for those living in central Bangkok, the line will take you straight to the massive Central Westgate Bangyai, one of the city's more significant recent mega-mall openings. The purple line will connect with the existing Bang Sue station and eventually also run from Tao Pun-Rat Burana.

Since its conception in 1999, Bangkok's BTS skytrain has operated on two lines—Sukhumvit and Silom—which presently service a total of 34 stations. The Sukhumvit line is set to extend from Bearing through Samutprakarn and all the way to the coastal town of Bang Pu. Estimated to be operational by early 2020, the extension will cover seven stations and is supposedly 57.06-percent complete already. That extension will easily get you to the picturesque Ancient City (Muang Boran), the seaside Samutprakarn City Hall and Samutprakarn Crocodile Farm. From Mo Chit, meanwhile, there is also a plan to extend through Saphan Mai to Khu Khot, which is also expected to be completed in 2020. Other highlights on this line include Kasetsart University, 11th Infantry Regiment (where the last Maya Music Festival was held) and the Royal Air Force Museum.

The MRT has been operating since 2004, with just the one line covering 18 stations. Construction to expand the current blue line from Hua Lamphong to Bang Kae (14km) will commence next year, and has been scheduled for completion within four years.

That means your trips to explore the Old Town will be much more convenient as the line passes through Charoenkrung, Chinatown, Sanam Chai Road (Museum Siam and Wat Pho) and Pak Khlong Talad over to the Thonburi side of the city. The first 4km of the line from Hua Lamphong to Tha Phra will be underground, before it converts into an overground train for the rest of the journey to Bang Kae (9km).

Finally, the Bangsue-Rangsit dark red line, covering some 24.6km of Bangkok (and planned to connect to the North/Northeastern region of the country in the future) as part of the planned SRT red line suburban railway system, is scheduled to be complete by 2019 after some delays in the bidding process. Why we're excited? No more ungodly traffic time on the way to Don Muang Airport and improved access to MOCA.

Tao Pun-Ratburana Phase two of the MRT purple line is intended to serve the southern part of the city. The underground train will cover areas in the Phra Nakhon and Dusit district—that means Samsen Road, the national l i b r a r y, T h e w e t M a r k e t , Banglamphu (one of the world’s fastest growing Airbnb areas),

the Golden Mount—before crossing to the other side of the river into Thonburi through Wongwian Yai and terminating at Rat Burana. Phra Pradaeng (home to the trending cycling destination Bang Krachao) will also be easier to access. So far, this phase has not yet received cabinet approval.

Taling Chan-Thailand Cultural Center-Minburi After much rerouting due to resident protests, the Thai cabinet has finally approved the construction of the orange line. This will also pass a lot of the city’s major sights serving people who live around Minburi.

Coffee Trail Two bits of coffee news from the Northern capital this week: the first is Cafe Nature (086-659-9775, goo.gl/AfHHsl), a newly-built compound off Suthep Road behind Chiang Mai University. Unlike its industrial loft-like counterparts, this small coffee house has a more back-to-nature vibe thanks to its thatched roof, but don’t worry—there’s air-con too.

Stick to the same road heading to Baan Khang Wat art village and you’ll spot Begin Again (099-762-0006, www.fb.com/beginagainchiangmai), a glasshouse-style building shaded by trees. Grab one of their highlight cake rolls in flavors like melon, strawberry and blueberry, and pull up a chair under the statement tree sculpture that rises up to the second floor.

All Afloat The latest in a line of new attractions set to open in Pattaya, D’Luck Cinematic Theater (Thepprasith Rd., Nongprue, Chonburi, 02716-8178) is an ambitious 10-rai “levitating theater” created by the A49 architecture company. The entertainment complex will feature a 10,000-sq-meter indoor theater seating up to 1,400, which promises state-of-the-art stage, light and sound shows. The highlight is an advanced CGI projection screen the size of three IMAX screens combined, said to be the biggest in Asia. Its debut show looks to be equally adventurous. Titled KAAN, the 90-minute epic will combine Thai literature like Ramayana, Phra Apai Mani and Krai Thong, courtesy of GDH559 studio (formerly GTH). In addition to the super-fancy CGI backdrop, the story will be told through huge eight-meter animatronics puppets and lots of Cirque du Soleil-like acrobatics. Don’t get too excited just yet; the project won’t be open until December. From then, the production is expected to run Tue-Sun at 6pm and 8pm, with tickets ranging from B2,000-3,000.

Yunnan Calling China’s Yunnan province isn’t just about stunning destinations like Dali, Lijiang, Xishuangbanna and Shangri-La; it’s also welcoming some chic new city hotels. One of the latest, Sofitel Kunming, decks out the 27th-52nd floors of one of the Kunming’s tallest buildings with contemporary styling that references the region’s symbolic animal, the peacock. Heading to Yaowarat this Chinese New Year (Mon, Feb 8)? Make sure you snag a table at one of these time-honored institutions beloved of the neighborhood’s oldest residents.

Tang Jai Yoo Now run by the third generation of the same family, this Teochew restaurant has stood for more than 75 years and is still going strong, always packed for both lunch and dinner. The most famous dishes include steamed blue crab with salted Chinese black olive, Chinese-style sashimi, suckling pig and egg noodles with braised goose feet. The place is not just popular with aunties and uncles, but also a younger crowd that knows where to go for original Chinese treats.

Yim Yim (or Jim Jim) Restaurant Taking its name from a Thai phrase meaning “smile, smile,” Yim Yim was the first Teochew restaurant in Yaowarat and has been open for nearly a century, offering authentic Teochew Chinese food made from recipes brought over by the owners’ family from China. It’s very near Tang Jai Yoo restaurant, situated on the second floor of the building at the corner of Yaowapanich and Padsai Road. Though the place looks old and you have to walk up a shabby staircase to the dining room,Yim Yim’s customers are not here for its ambience. The stars of the show are the roast whole pig with crispy skin, seasoned shrimp roll and oyster omelet 89 Padsai Road, Behind Hua Seng Hong gold shop.

Hua Seng Hong Though it now has 16 branches around Bangkok, the original is still going strong thanks to the same old faces. Set right on Yaowarat Road,

this 40-year-old eating spot is famous for the consistency of its roast duck, fresh crab and king prawn dishes. There are some quality Thai dishes too, but really its specialty lies in traditional Chinese treats. Try the braised goose feet in a clay pot, roast duck, steamed crab with glass noodles and stir-fried crab with yellow curry powder. The seafood is always fresh, the crab wonderfully meaty and the dim sum well worth trying.

Eiah Sae If you want to get a real glimpse of nostalgic Yaowarat, head to the 87-year-old Chinese café Eiah-Sae for its famous Thai-style tea and coffee. Every day you’ll find a local gathering of elderly Thai-Chinese regulars (mostly men) who come to chat and do business over coffee. It serves a wide range of Asian teas—lemon iced tea, traditional Thai black tea, Thai milk tea and hot tea—as well as other traditional drinks like nor kao (a mix of tea and coffee with the almond-flavored heng yim). All can be ordered with egg custard on toast, soft-boiled eggs or toast with butter, jam or chocolate spread.

The bread is freshly baked daily according to the founder’s’ family recipe. The place is hidden in Padsai street not too far from the main Yaowarat Road and open for breakfast at 4am.

Piang Ki Pochana Finding Piangki Pochana will take your best navigation skills but the authentic Hakka Chinese food is well worth it. The highlight dishes include kao yok (braised pork belly with dried Chinese cabbage), radish meatball, soybean sheet stuffed pork chitterlings and steamed

chicken marinated with Chinese liquor. Eating here is more like eating at a friends’ house, as the owner serves food in portion sizes to match the number at your table. Walk-ins are welcome at lunch time but it gets very busy in the evenings. To find it, head deep into the same soi as Wat Kusolsamakarn temple.

Chinatown Scala This restaurant opened in 1951 when a Chinese chef migrated to Thailand and found that no one outside of hotels was serving fish maw soup. After hawkering around the Yaowarat area, he moved into a shophouse whose neo sign has become a Chinatown icon. The highlight fish maw soup still remains on the menu, along with peking duck, suckling pig and seafood such as stir-fried crab curry. Choose between a private dining room or the bustling main hall with its lazy Susan-equipped round tables. There are now two branches on Yaowarat Road just a few steps from each other.

Guay Jub Nai Lek (Auan) There are a bunch of guay jub (rice noodle) stalls along Yaowarat Road, but the most famous is the 30-year-old Guay Jub Nai Lek (Auan). Parked their stall on the corner of Yaowarat Soi 11, Nai Lek (Auan) is popular among locals for their peperry clear soup and super crispy pork and pork entrails. You might have to queue for some time but the guay jub is worth the hassle—and you might even make some new friends while you wait.

Numero Uno Established about eight years ago on Koh Chang, Barrio Bonito quickly earned itself Tripadvisor’s no. 1 spot for the island’s restaurants. Now its Mexican-French owners, Mariana Villalobos Torres and Julien Chardonnet, have brought it to Bangkok. Torres, a selftaught chef from Mexico City, controls the kitchen, turning out authentic native dishes from her family’s recipes including guacamole (B220) served in crispy corn tortilla cones and quesadillas (B200). The short menu rotates daily, but you can usually expect burritos, tacos and queso (cheese fondue) with different fillings and toppings like homemade chorizo, slow-cooked pulled pork, beef and lamb. To drink, their bar stocks a list of tequilas and also rolls out creative margaritas, whether green and spicy (with cucumber and jalapeno pepper, B260) or fruity (with pomelo or mango, passion and strawberry, B250). Highlights include the Cantonese-style homemade tofu with shimeji mushroom and abalone sauce, deep fried pork ribs with Zheng Jiang vinegar sauce (a specialty from Zheng Jiang province) and crispy scallop with butter egg floss, inspired by Sichuan cuisine. If you thought the Marriott hotel at the top of Thonglor was just about its rooftop bar, you’d be wrong. The steakhouse, District Grill, is the kind of richly kitted-out, windowless space that makes eating slabs of cow that much more pleasurable. And it just got a new chef, Vorapoj Christian Caluwaert, a half-Thai half-French veteran of Michelin-star European kitchens including Belgium’s L’Orangeraie and France’s Hostellerie de Levernois. Steak still takes center stage, from Black Angus Aussie tenderloin (B1,510/180g) to A4 Kobe striploin (B2,550/150g), but he’s also playing around with some interesting new French seasonal dishes like Brittany sole with escargot, parsnip and vanilla (B1,690). For a sharp and bitter choice, the Bamboo Bar Negroni (caramel gin, Africa-formula vermouth and dry orange Campari, B490) has an impressive caramel aftertaste and comes with a coffee tiramisu macaron.

This fried chicken specializing bar (see page 18) also does a solid line of cocktails mostly made from gin. The Master Peach (B200) offers a blend of gin with peach schnapps, syrup, lime juice and a dash of bitters, served with popcorn, while the savory Bacon Blah Blah mixes bourbon with lime juice, syrup, egg white and bacon oil, topped with grilled bacon and lemon peel.

ON THE BAR Bricks & Bone The buzz: The Rama 9 area has welcomed a new bar for serious cocktail drinkers, run mainly by Nitikorn “Tao” Thanataweekool and Kanisorn “Top” Pookavanuch, bartenders from Vice Versa and the Drinks Academy family. The American-themed bar deals in bourbon-based cocktails and barbecue in a casual yet masculine setting.

The decor: The long, narrow black box looks more like a cafe than a bar with its standard industrial decor: white-washed bricks, vintage bulbs, custom-made wood furniture and piping.

The central bar shows off the extensive range of booze.

The music: Familiar alternative, Britpop/rock and electro pop.

The crowd: In-the-know Rama 9 locals plus the bartenders’ loyal fans (yes, they’re that good).

The food: Even though it’s not Thai, the dishes here are pretty spicy. The barbecue menu is made with a signature sauce that mixes bourbon with dried chili. Try the pork ribs (B350) or pulled pork burger (B200). Other comforting fare includes spicy hot wings (B125), hot dogs (smoked pork or veal, B190), Mexican pulled pork nachos (B180) and pastas.

The drinks: Bourbon is the main player here, with plenty of rare-find bottles. This is reflected in signature cocktails like the mild Texas (B285), which mixes bourbon with rum, vanilla, butter-scotch, amaretto and ginger ale in a beer glass covered with a leather patch for a cowboy touch. Moulin Rouge (B250) is a sweet berry

drink that blends bourbon, raspberry, blueberry, chocolate, cassis and orange-candy in goblet covered with white fur, while the almost-spirit-forward D-Day (B250) packs a punch considering it mixes bourbon with Irish whiskey, La Quintinye rouge vermouth, amaro, aperol and honey in a flask. We recommend the lesser-known classic Boulevardeir (bourbon, sweet vermouth and Campari, B280), too. They also serve Beerlao (B140) and Budweiser (B160), as well as occasional local brews like Chiang Mai Beer.

Wing N’ Thing Phra Athit’s new kid on the block takes pride in two things: fried chicken and gin.

The buzz: One of the rare new spaces to open on the corner of Phra Athit-Phra Sumen Road offers a menu of spicy fried chicken alongside some serious gin cocktails.

The decor: Like other joints in the area, Wing N’ Thing resides in a standard single-unit shop-house. Unlike other joints in the area, this one feels light, bright and contemporary. Downstairs takes a cute Brooklyn cafe direction with its clean tiles, whitewashed walls and warm wooden counters, while upstairs you get a better sense of the old building thanks to the original windows and wooden wall panels.

The food: The kitchen rolls out sets of crispy fried wings (B160560 for 6-24 pieces) in three choices of seasoning: original, hot

and spicy, and barbecue. Each set is accompanied by your choice of eight dipping sauces, from Jack Daniel’s barbecue sauce and cheese dip to Thai-inspired basil caramel, tom yum mayo and “chili from hell” spicy sauce. Pay an extra B40 for sides like hash brown, onion rings, garlic bread or mashed potato. Other items on the menu includes calamari (B160), New Orleans wings (B160), bacon grilled cheese (B190) and tom yum kung thincrust pizza (B300).

The drinks: The bar's focus on gin results in refreshing cocktails like the Master Peach (B200), a blend of gin with peach schnapps, syrup, lime juice and a dash of bitters, served with popcorn. We also like the savory Bacon Blah Blah (B230), which

mixes bourbon with lime juice, syrup, egg white and bacon oil, topped with grilled bacon and lemon peel. They have a list of classic gin tonics, too, made using syrup twists, like the Gin Rose (B180), in which rose syrup is added to the gin and tonic and garnished with rose petals. They also serve imported bottles like Brewdog Punk IPA (B250) and Brothers cider (B250).

With its high ceilings, abundant natural light and jungle of ferns barely clinging to the ceiling, this upmarket vegan restaurant stands out from its backpacker-oriented peers. So, expect to pay a bit more for Broccoli Revolution’s diverse, though far from comprehensive, menu of meat-free Mediterranean, Western and Southeast Asian dishes. Health pretensions aside, there’s enough sin going on to make the saintly sounding soups, salads and mains exciting—even for meat eaters. The broccoli quinoa charcoal burger (broccoli quinoa patty, mango tomato salsa, dill spread, cranberry charcoal bun, B250), the restaurant’s social media star, is a touch sweet but we enjoy its firm, flavorful patty and crunchy bun. It’s bettered by the moreish parsnip, potato and turnip fries, which are crisp without being too oily (though we’d prefer a homemade

The team behind Minibar Royale, Supanniga and EAT never fails to miss an opportunity to open in the most happening spots in town. And giant-luxe mega-mall EmQuartier is no exception, where you’ll find this wall-to-wall blond wood cafe serving simple Thai dishes that stand in contrast to the mall’s more deluxe eateries.

The food here takes influence from the Bangkok streets, adopting a tam sang concept that allows you to pick a protein and a carb then tell the kitchen how you want them cooked. The big difference here is that you’ll find higher quality ingredients and no added MSG. And we’d love to be excited about that—if it weren’t for flavors stuck in neutral compared to the bold street dishes from where they originate.

ketchup). The tofu satay skewers (B160) are another success: lightly seasoned and grilled with a mellow peanut sauce, and accompanied by pungent pickled cucumber salad. Although presentation and texture tend to be on-point, some dishes are pretty bland, as if targeted at only the most masochistic of healthy eaters. The Lebanese mezze platter (hummus, baba ganoush, tabbouleh, tzatziki and marinated olives with pita bread, B290) is one such pedestrian selection, with the underseasoned baba ganoush and dried-out pita the biggest disappointments. The broccoli apple walnut salad (B250), piled with craisins and sultanas, too, is crunchy and fresh but one-dimensional, lacking a citrus-y edge to cut through the sweet dressing. The wide range of cold-pressed juices (B100-180) are a real hit—try the super-green No 4 (kale, iceberg, romaine, green oak, celery and lime). Desserts come from trusted names Veganerie (cakes, from B75) and Farm to Table Cafe (vegetarian ice cream in out-there flavors like broccoli and sweet potato, B50/scoop). The drinks now include coffee (from Roots), organic wines, beers (some gluten-free) and a long list of mojitos (kale mojito, anyone?).

While we’re not so fond of having to order and pay upfront at the counter, we do admire the slick service. Broccoli Revolution is a sure bet for solid vegan food in a cool environment that beats a trek to the sweaty tourist badlands of Khao San.

The tender Thai-French beef loin in this restaurant’s version of krapao nua (stirfried Thai-French beef loin in holy basil, B195), for example, swims in a watery sauce with only one depth of flavor: sweet.

Sexed up with a salted sunny egg from Chaiya district in Surat Thani, at least it’s not a total failure. The tom yam seafood fried rice (B195) also lacks any of the piquant spiciness you might expect, saved only thanks to a slice of lime and liberal use of prik nam pla (chili fish sauce).

Another dish that wastes its superior ingredients is the Himalayan salted chicken wings (B120)—so salty they make you thankful for the otherwise bland complimentary shiitake soup. Our advice: stick to the sea prawn pad Thai (B195), which features perfectly cooked rice noodles from Chanthaburi in a sauce which, though a little muddy, has a nice balance of mellow flavors. Come dessert, we also love the quality of the black sesame ice cream served with rice-flour custard (B130). The coconut ice cream is also wonderful, with tiny pieces of coconut meat blended into the soft cream, though the syrup banana that it’s served with is lifeless compared to the street version we love. For the higher bill, don’t expect Eat, Rice & Noodle to fix your street-food cravings, but the quality of ingredients and fuss-free service sure beat EmQuartier’s food court.

Head over to Lumphini Park this Feb 6 for the Care for Cancer 2016 Fun Run, a healthy morning of exercise that also supports an important cause. In an attempt to raise funds for the Genetic Cancer Research Centre at Chulalongkorn Hospital, the Thai Red Cross Society along with Antara Siam Bangkok Hotel and the Embassy of Canada holds a 5km and 10km run, where all money raised will be donated to genetic cancer research.
