Welcome to our first digital edition of the Proclaimer and my thanks to Melinda Heathcote and Bryden Isbister for taking the lead on its production. Melinda on the editorial issues and Bryden on the technical side. Many of you will remember the printed version edited and produced by Alex Clouter for many years and I am very grateful for what he achieved, it is tribute to his work that so many wanted the Proclaimer to continue after Alex moved on to other work. By producing the Proclaimer on-line enables us to produce it in a more cost-effective way and is the way that a significant number of people now read magazines. An on-line version cuts down on having too many newspapers and magazines hanging around the house and creates space in the recycling box - once read.

I very much enjoyed reading the articles which, to my mind, show how people contribute in different ways to the life of the Church and the community. I see the work of the Holy Spirit who, captures our interest in an aspect of the faith, and through this invites us into a deeper relationship with God, who as the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit we will celebrate on Sunday 30th May – Trinity Sunday. It is important to hear how children and young people are getting along following our

lockdowns and the articles from Lucy Horne, the Headteacher at St. Philip’s and Amy Declas are a reminder how well all have dealt with our current difficulties and for us to keep families, teachers, staff and volunteers in our prayers.

The articles also show us those aspects of our faith life that may not have the highest profile because of the many other things that occupy us on a daily basis – especially during the Pandemic. The year of St. Joseph has got a bit lost, the new Lectionary seems far away but will be here sooner than we think, the fantastic contribution of the Friends of Arundel Cathedral and the great work of Sussex Community Foundation all deserve publicity. I am looking forward to the next couple of months when we will be able to get the work of the Parish SVP established and expand the work of the Parish Bereavement Team. But many thanks to all our contributors and a happy Easter to all of them and to you our readers.

Could she have known what the soldiers knew, The cold and trembling fear?

Looked on as angels moved the stone, Then seen the Christ appear?

Had she seen, shining from the tomb, That first small ray of light?

Watched, as the stone was rolled away, Witnessed the glorious sight?

On the 150th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church

Pope Francis has made 2021 the year of St. Joseph. In his Apostolic Letter – Patris Corde of the Holy Father Francis - it marks the 150th Anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To celebrate the Anniversary, Pope Francis has proclaimed a special “Year of St. Joseph” beginning on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception 2020 and extending to the same festival in 2021.

then, teaches us that faith in God includes believing that he can work even through our fears, our frailties and our weaknesses. He also teaches us that amid the tempests of life, we must never be afraid to let the Lord steer our course. At times, we want to be in complete control, yet God always sees the bigger picture.

The Polish writer Jan Dobraczynski, in his book The Shadow of the Father, tells the story of Saint Joseph’s life in the form of a novel.

He uses the evocative image of a shadow to define Joseph. In his relationship with Jesus, Joseph was the earthly shadow of the heavenly Father: he watched over him and protected him, never leaving him to go his own way. We can think of Moses’ words to Israel: “In the wilderness….. you saw how the Lord

your God carried you, just as one carries a child, all the way that you travelled”. In a similar way, Joseph acted as a father for his whole life.

Being a father entails introducing children to life and reality. Not holding them back, being overprotective or possessive, but rather making them capable of deciding for themselves, enjoying freedom and exploring new possibilities. Perhaps for this reason, Joseph is traditionally called a “most chaste” father. That title is not simply a sign of affection, but the summation of an attitude that is the opposite of possessiveness……..”

This is Pope Francis’ enlightening picture of our Lord’s Foster father.

Because of my committed devotion to St. Joseph, I wonder if I may follow on from my article concerning my special friendship with Canon Michael Hazell created by and sustained by St. Joseph, which appeared in the Autumn issue of The Proclaimer?

Since Canon Michael died, I have corresponded with his sister (whom I

did not know beforehand, but with whom I now share regular correspondence). She has recently given me the privilege of one or two very special articles owned by Canon Michael, including the following Homily by Canon Michael on St Joseph’s Feast day. It is so special that I felt the need to share it!

“It’s a pity that St. Joseph is so often depicted as old as a grandfather. He was a young man, the only one called to be with Mary in her pregnancy and to help her bring up her Son. What a turn his life took

when he got himself engaged to the lovely Mary! He had a happy future to plan for, poor though he might be.

At least he had a trade and could hope for work in the village. This young gentle girl would bring honour to his house and give him children to continue his family line.

How proud his children would be to belong to the kingly house of David, and how he would encourage them to live good lives as befitted an observant Jew. What a shock then to discover that

Mary was pregnant. Did he feel rejected, betrayed? The girl he loved carries a child that is not his and gives no explanation. How broken-hearted he must have been as the reality sinks in. His integrity would not allow him to expose Mary to the rigor of the law which demanded that a woman in such a situation should be stoned to death!

He chose another way, a way that would shield Mary from scorn, protect her from the village gossip.

How gentle this good man is! Where another would get angry, give way to rage and feelings of betrayal, he put his promised bride first. Anguished he may have been with this extraordinary happening but his love for her shone through in all that he

did.

Then, when he had his mind made up to carry out his plan, he had a dream. An angel tells him that the child Mary carries is by the Holy Spirit, a child who is to be the Saviour of his people. Now he understands Mary’s silence. He was a man who would have been familiar with the role of angels as God’s messengers in the history of his people. He listened and responded immediately. He is ready to play his part in this extraordinary drama, though he may have understood very little of it. He was ready to turn his life upside down each time he heard God’s call.

We have no word that he spoke; he fades out of the picture as Jesus

perverseness which does not want anything it gets, and which always wants what it has not got; the ingratitude which does not even realise what it is getting; the attitude of mind which lives in continual resentment.

Give us the even temper which can take things as they come; the sense of humour which can always find some cause to smile; help us to be brave in danger, uncomplaining in pain, and cheerful in disappointment.

To give us patience with our lives, patience to accept things, even when we do not see the meaning or the reason for them.

He is a great patron to have. A true hero. May he accompany us on our journey through life, as he journeyed with Mary and her Son, and lead us to the Child he names Jesus, his Saviour and ours.”

reaches adolescence, and nothing more is said of him in scripture. But what we know of him is enough. His silent presence is a reminder to us of God’s great love for the poor, the just and humble people down through the ages, who like Joseph, are faithful to God in good times and in bad, ready to trust that God knows what he is doing.

We ask him to keep us from attitudes which are bound to make life unhappy. From eyes which can always find some fault to see; the tongue which can always find something to grumble about; the heart which can always find some grudge and some bitterness to cherish. Keep us from the

Let us now make our prayer to him: Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Blessed Joseph, to us too, Show yourself a father And guide us in the path of life.

Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage, And defend us from every evil.

Amen.

Today, the Apparition Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Rue du Bac, Paris, is visited by around one million pilgrims each year

The months of May and October have traditionally been special months in the Catholic calendar, honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ.

Since at least the seventeenth century (and possibly from early medieval times) Mary has been venerated and celebrated in May, with flowers, candles, prayers, processions and crowning as Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Mary holds a special place in our hearts, as the spiritual Mother of all who belong to the Body of Christ; having given birth to that Body, she is indeed our mother.

She knows pain and sorrow, having accompanied Jesus through his Passion and Crucifixion, understanding that this was the only way to our salvation. Moreover, she continues her role of advocate, representing us before her Son and interceding for us so that we may receive the gift of eternal salvation.

One year ago, on 29 March 2020, we honoured Mary by participating in the Rededication of England as Mary’s Dowry and by consecrating ourselves to her. In July/August each year the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes in France recalls Mary’s appearance to Saint Bernadette 163 years ago. Recognised as a holy place, renowned for its physical and spiritual healing, and the birth or regeneration of faith, Lourdes welcomes six million pilgrims each year.

In Paris, France, in 1830, Sister (now Saint) Catherine Labouré was awakened from sleep and summoned to her community’s chapel in Rue du Bac, where she met the Virgin Mary and spoke with her for several hours. In a subsequent apparition, the Blessed Virgin showed a vision of herself with rays of light streaming from gems on rings on her fingers. She explained that these were graces obtained for those who prayed for them.

However, some gems did not emit light, meaning available graces were not being requested.

Then, in a third apparition, Mary showed a vision of herself accompanied by the words ‘O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.’ She also showed the design of a medal – the Miraculous Medal – and asked that the medal be struck, explaining ‘Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck. ’

Following manufacture of the medal, the blessings that Mary had promised began to shower down on those who wore her medal. By 1842 it was estimated that 100 million Miraculous Medals were in circulation – testimony to belief in its power to obtain change.

However, there is no magic - the medal is not a good luck charm; rather it is an agent that enables faith and prayer to avail us of the graces of healing, patience, repentance and faith. These were all badly needed in France of these days with revolution, poverty, unemployment, poor harvests and widespread illness - including the 1832 cholera epidemic.

In 1854 Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Four years later Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes reported that the apparition of the lady who appeared to her had replied ‘I am the Immaculate Conception.’

Poor, sickly, an indifferent scholar, Bernadette then needed the title explained to her.

God’s grace continues to be available through faith and the gift of the Miraculous Medal

The year of 1830 on the Miraculous Medal is the year the Blessed Mother gave the design of the Miraculous Medal to Saint Catherine Labouré. The reference to Mary conceived without sin supports the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

Today, the Apparition Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Rue du Bac, Paris, is visited by around one million pilgrims each year. Many testify to the holy atmosphere in the Chapel; it is a place of deep peace and serenity. My wife and I visited it ten years ago and we can attest to the atmosphere of reverence and sanctity in the Chapel.

The Miraculous Medal continues to be struck and is available from repositories and online. Our Lady did not indicate the Graces were timelimited so, in these days of confusion, rampant materialism, Coronavirus and absent faith, we can safely assume God’s grace continues to be available through faith and the gift of the Miraculous Medal.

Rear of Medal The 12 stars can refer to the Apostles and recall the vision in the Book of Revelation in which ‘a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars.’ The cross can symbolize Christ and our redemption, with the bar under the cross a sign of the earth. The ‘M’ represents Mary, and the joining of her initial with the cross shows Mary’s close involvement with Jesus and our world. Finally, the two hearts represent the love of Jesus and Mary for us.

New Lectionary for England and Wales The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales have decided to publish a new edition of the Lectionary (the book of readings we use in the liturgy) to replace the one currently in use. This does not mean the selection of readings will be different, but that a different translation will be used. The New Lectionary is scheduled to come into use in Advent 2022.

Why a new translation? What’s wrong with the current one?

The Lectionary is the book of readings we use in the liturgy

The criticism of this text is that the English version relies too heavily on the first French text rather than on the original Hebrew and Greek texts.

It is also more a ‘thought-forthought’ than ‘word-for-word’ translation compared to other modern versions, and its ‘style’ is thought by some to be too colloquial, and therefore not ideally suited to formal ‘proclamation’ within the liturgy. Another reason to look for a new translation is that any text can become dated, using words and expressions that are no longer in current use or that have acquired new meanings.

Choosing just the right word, or

expression, to express the meaning of the original can be very difficult

The Bishops were looking for a fresh translation which has the following qualities: • It is made directly from original Hebrew and Greek texts.

• It has an accuracy which conveys the meaning of the biblical authors.

• It has the dignity of language needed for a worthy proclamation of the Word of God, and yet has accessibility, so that it is readily comprehensible.

In addition to the usual problems of translation there are particular difficulties with Scripture in producing a text which fulfils these criteria, which is why there have been so many versions – there are currently more than 450 English translations – and studies of early manuscripts continue to throw new light on the scriptures.

The special challenges in translating scripture are in the texts themselves. The Old Testament was written mainly in ancient Hebrew (there are some sections in Aramaic and Greek). This is an archaic language no longer spoken, though modern Hebrew is based on it. The text itself was written in capitals omitting all vowels, punctuation and spaces between words, so working out what the actual words are is challenging! There are also words and expression found nowhere else in contemporary literature, and such

literature is not very abundant. The Old Testament was written over many centuries, by many authors. Each author has his own style and the meaning of words and phrases may have changed over the centuries. As a ‘dead’ language, it is not even possible to consult native speakers for clarification about subtleties of meaning.

The New Testament is a bit easier. It is all in Greek and was produced by a handful of authors over a period of not more than 50 years, and there is a great deal of contemporary literature with which to compare it. However, it too was written without punctuation or spaces between words. This all makes for very hard work for the translators, compounded by the fact that English is a very rich language in which there are many different ways to express the same thought. Choosing just the right word, or expression, to express the meaning of the original can be very difficult.

After consultation with a number of English-speaking Conferences of Bishops, the Bishops of England and Wales have chosen the Catholic Edition of the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible commissioned by the Catholic

Bishops’ Conference of India.

The psalms and New Testament canticles we currently use in the liturgy have been from a widely acclaimed translation made in 1963, sponsored by the Grail. This has been extensively revised and published recently by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops under the title of Abbey Psalms and Canticles. This version will be used in the new Lectionary.

We carry a range of goods including During the Covid-19 pandemic we have continued to support the Cathedral and our customers to the best of our abilities. This has required some “thinking outside of the box” not to mention the dedication and commitment of our team of shop volunteers.

Sadly our endeavours were curtailed after just one month as the second lockdown came into force. Once again we adapted to comply with the national guidelines and implemented “Let’s Talk Shop” (our version of click & collect). This facility will continue to be available even after lockdown Monday to Friday. The last few months have been challenging for many. A change in routine and restrictions on activities has been hard on all members of society and for children in primary school; this has been no exception.

They have all had to change everything they know about school and outside activities and adjust to a very different way of learning.

Children at St Philip’s have been amazing in their resilience and adapting nature. Whilst home schooling, all families took on board the new regime and logged into the computer daily to meet their teacher, they took turns to speak, listened to their peers without interrupting and listened to lots of information transmitted through airwaves. They then completed work in their bedroom or their kitchen or next to their parents in the home office.

Now we are back in school, they are all adjusting again to being back together, to the noise levels increasing and the stamina of being

in school and focused for full days rather than being able to take breaks when they choose to. Yes, children are resilient and yes they have been safe and cared for but we do not underestimate how this sudden imposed change will have affected some of our children. We are mindful that we need to walk before we can run in ensuring children settle back into school life before we start trying to ‘fill the gaps’ or ‘recover any lost learning’.

This will all come in time, but, for now, we need to focus on our children having a strong sense of wellbeing.

Whilst children have not been in the school building, as a school, we felt it was very important for families to still feel connected to our school community. A large part of our school community is our faith. Each day whilst teachers met their pupils on the virtual classroom platform, they would share a prayer. This important act meant that staff and pupils remained connected in prayer.

COMMUNITY IS OUR FAITH

Ash Wednesday took place during half term so, before we broke up for half term, teachers spoke with their class both at home and in school about Lent and the role that they play within the season of Lent.

Children were invited to make a Lenten promise – this included an act of kindness, an act of giving or an act of sacrifice. When children returned to the classrooms in early March, they returned to prayer focus tables in the classrooms adorned with a purple cloth and their Lenten

promises tied onto a bare tree branch.

Canon David has sent us regular, child friendly Lenten Reflections too.

Fairtrade fortnight took place in February. As a school who has ‘Fairtrade’ status, it was essential that we still highlight the need for Fairtrade even though the children were not all in school. Teachers shared assemblies, activities and discussions about what Fairtrade is and why it is important to ensure we all support it.

Many of our children in Year 3 are making their First Holy Communion this summer. Their sessions with Canon David and the catechist group have taken place on Zoom for the start of the course. Their First Reconciliation, however, was able to be done in person. With the use of screens and social distancing, the children were all able to attend the Cathedral and meet with either Canon David or Father Charles to make their First Confession. They will continue their meetings regularly until they make their First Holy Communion in May.

The Stations of the Cross The origin of the devotion to the Stations of the Cross has been attributed by some sources to Our Blessed Lady. After the death of Jesus, she remained in Jerusalem, near Mount Sion. An early Syriac source states that in the year 345 (of the Seleucid era, i.e., AD 34), Mary would go to Jesus’s tomb every day and weep. She would revisit the route that Jesus had taken in a contrary direction, from the end to the start of His journey, from the tomb to Calvary and ending at Pilate’s praetorium. The early accounts are confirmed by scholars(1).

Jerusalem is the site of the original route of the trial, Passion and death of Christ. The Via Dolorosa, the Sorrowful Way is thought to be the actual path that Jesus walked to Calvary. The purpose of the devotion of the Stations of the Cross is a spiritual journey through reflection on Christ’s Passion.

In AD 313, after the persecution of Christians during the Roman Empire, the way of the Passion in Jerusalem was marked with important stops. In the fourth century, pilgrims from other countries were arriving in the Holy Land and following the Way of the Cross. Not everyone could travel to the Holy Land. Replicating holy places outside the Holy Land, in order that all could experience these forms of spiritual devotion, became popular. Building copies of shrines was not a new idea. Some, including

shrines of Bethlehem and the Mount of Olives had already been made. There were many reproductions of the Holy Sepulchre from the fifth century onwards. Later the Franciscan Friars of St Francis of Assisi, became guardians of the shrines of the Holy Land under a ruling by Pope Clement VI in 1342. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, access to the Holy Land was blocked, resulting in more shrines being built throughout Europe, notably in places such as Bologna, Cordova, Messina, Nuremburg and Rhodes. Reproduction of the Way of the Cross aimed to provide a miniature pilgrimage to the Holy Land accessible to everyone.

There was wide variation in the number of stations, some versions having 7, others anywhere between 19 and 37. A book by Adrichomius in 1584 ‘Jerusalem sicut Christi Tempore floruit,’ contained 12, corresponding to the first 12 stations of the version used to this day. It is thought to be the basis of the Church’s authorised version. By 1731, the last 2 had been added (see below).

The latter referred to the Codex Sinaticus, the 4th century Bible which he discovered and to the Codex Ambrosianus, which contains Biblical manuscripts from the 6th-11th centuries.

The decisions of three Popes over fifty-six years, from 1686 to 1742, resulted in the increasing spread of the Stations of the Cross to Christian churches around the world and led to their establishment in a form that we have today. In 1686 Pope Innocent XI permitted all Franciscans to have the Stations of the Cross in their churches. Almost half a century later, in 1731 Pope Clement XII extended this to include all churches, setting the number of stations at fourteen.

His successor, Pope Benedict XIV suggested that each station should have a cross and possibly an image in 1742.

The Stations of the Cross are known by various names. The ‘Via Sacra’ in the 12th-14th centuries. In the sixteenth century they became known as ‘Via Dolorosa’, the Sorrowful Way or the Way of Sorrows. Also known as Via Crucis or the Way of the Cross.

The term ‘station’ can be attributed to an Englishman, William Wey, who visited the Holy Land in 1458 and 1462. Up to then the journey of the Passion was followed in reverse order, as Mary had done. The more familiar order nowadays, from Pilate’s house to the Crucifixion was starting to become popular at the time of Wey’s visit.

entombment of Christ and focuses devotion on His atoning death. The modernist, liturgical view consists of fifteen stations. The fifteenth is the Resurrection, considered integral to the Passion and death of the Saviour.

Pope John Paul ll approved this in the year 2000.

According to some, only eight stations are referred to in the scriptures. The following stations, numbers 3,4,6,7,9 are not mentioned in the Gospels. Station 13 is also not considered an accurate representation by all, as in the Gospels it is Joseph of Arimathea who took Jesus down from the Cross. However, all these stations are part of the Holy Tradition and therefore valid. On Good Friday in 1991, Pope John Paul II introduced a sequence closer to biblical accounts, known as the Scriptural Way of the Cross (above). It aims to ‘add nuance to the understanding of the Passion,’ and does not invalidate the

traditional version in any way.

The Stations of the Cross are most often performed during Lent. Since 1964, the Pope, on many occasions carrying the cross himself, has led the Stations in the Colosseum, in Rome. Each year a different group prepares the meditations for the focus of prayer during the devotions.

In 2020, due to Covid restrictions, Pope Francis led the Way of the Cross in a deserted Saint Peter’s Square, which was livestreamed. In a broadcast, ‘In His Image’, prior to the Via Crucis, Pope Francis said in relation to the pandemic, and which could also be applied to the Stations of the Cross, to approach it/them, ‘Looking up, looking to hope, because hope does not disappoint. It does not take away the pain, but it does not disappoint.’

The beautiful sculptures of the Stations in the Cathedral are in memory of Bishop John Butt, who died in 1899. He was chaplain and rector from 1862-1885 and subsequently became Bishop of Southwark. The panels, carved by Messrs. R.L. Boulton & Sons of Cheltenham, were given by the Duke of Norfolk and the congregation.

Lockdown studying I live in Arundel with my parents & 3 other siblings.

My lockdown experience at the beginning was surprisingly fun!

I liked the idea of being off school for a while (so we thought) and I was very productive with exercising, doing all my school work and being on top of it, being organised and eating more healthily. The first lockdown was easier as the sun was out, which meant I could sunbathe in the garden while doing school work. I had my free time to read books and really liked digging deep into the stuff I discovered I enjoyed like spirituality, meditation & yoga .

This extra time I had, it was actually like a time of transformation!

We went on lots of local walks & I spent a lot of time talking to friends virtually!

But now (March 2021) I’m back at school and things seem to be better. However I’m a bit stressed at my upcoming GCSE exams,as we were told that they will be cancelled, but there is still confusion about how grades will be worked out etc & how we will be assessed from now on....

I look forward to the day when we won’t have to wear masks and we can all connect again together freely.....

Then summer 2020 came and as you can imagine lockdown lifted so it was very fun. We even managed to go on two short holidays visiting family in France and Sardinia.

In September 2020, I was fortunate that I could do my confirmation which was great. (I know other parishes couldn’t do theirs so I felt grateful), it was a nice, sunny and happy day.

However, this 3rd more stricter lockdown was harder as the days were darker and colder, restrictions were tighter so I felt more isolated at home. School work felt more like a chore then last lockdown,as the excitement went from being off school. We had a bereavement in October 2020 & I was grateful to have been able to attend my dear Great Aunt’s funeral in Manchester. Unfortunately because of lockdown, we weren’t able to attend our dear Grandad’s funeral in Sardinia (Italy)in February 2021.

The first lockdown was easier as the sun was out …

Many parishioners will be aware – vaguely, perhaps - that the Friends of Arundel Cathedral has donated some £700,000 to the Diocese over the last ten years for capital works: the repairs to the Fleche (which on examination turned out to be held to the structure by one ageing bolt) and to the tracery of the rose window, and the refurbishment of the Cathedral Centre.

What they may not know is that, annually, the Friends also gives about £50,000 for the general running of the Cathedral as well as funding some of its Choral Scholarships.

(You might think that the foresight of Cardinal Cormac, when he was our Bishop, and Canon Tony Whale, then the parish priest and administrator, who together founded the Friends, was providential; I think that in current circumstances I might call it miraculous! The Cathedral parish is small, the Cathedral is nearly 150 years old, and this sudden pandemic could have left it with no resources at all, since the Diocese has many heavy commitments elsewhere. And yet it is still one of the three most beautiful Roman Catholic cathedrals in England.)

it has received some very generous gifts, an awful lot of the Friends’ funds has been saved up from the way small annual subscriptions and widows’ mites – all very generous, in the measure of things - pile up! Our heartfelt thanks to them -and thank goodness our Creator included compound mathematics in The Plan!

But the Friends is much more than just a moneybox! In this material world where, so often, the physical has to mediate the spiritual – as it does in a grace-filled way in the Sacraments - an appeal to our senses is just as important as an appeal to our minds. Here in our Cathedral – it could almost be an enchanted wood fashioned out of stone – with its solemn liturgies and soaring music and the gathered fervour of its congregations when the whole Diocese, comes together to worship, led by Bishop Richard, you realise what a powerful message is being conveyed to your soul as well as to your senses. You are being given a tiny glimpse of that great assembly which St John pictured for us in the Apocalypse! You could almost be carried up into it!

And belonging to the Friends gives you a special way of associating yourself with our Bishop’s ministry, besides giving something to God that would otherwise belong to Caesar!

To draw people together – to draw them to the Cross and the certain hope of Resurrection – will be all the more crucial in a world brought to the ground by virus and misfortune and frightened by the proximity of dust and ashes; across the globe, old certainties will fray into doubts, the mysterious balm of old comforts will fade. But the sacred ministry of our bishops will be even more important: their leadership, life giving, lifesaving. And these old stones will still stand, God willing, to proclaim the good news, untarnished, unabashed.

…It’s solemn liturgies and soaring music and the gathered fervour of its congregations when the whole Diocese, comes together to worship…

The Tomb of St Thomas

It is recorded that St. Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles, came to India in the first century AD

During my years living and working in India namely Chennai and the capital Delhi, it transpired that a certain amount of people employed on our major projects were of the Christian faith. The majority of Indian people of course being, in the main, either Hindu or Muslim.

Whilst working in Chennai It did not take certain local employees long to acknowledge that I was also of Christian faith and upbringing and out of curiosity and social activities I found the time to discuss with them amongst other things their overall way of life and upbringing, including Christianity.

Due to the interest they were showing in my possibly intrusive questioning in this regard I was duly invited to attend a service with two of them one Sunday in the beautiful church of St. Mary within the grounds of the massive Fort St. George, Chennai.

The British first settled here in 1639 in the reign of Charles 1, just prior to the commencement of the great Civil War. In 1612 the British opened what was then called an “English Home” at Surat but were driven out and in1620 effected a settlement at Masulipatum. On 1st March 1639 a certain Mr. Day obtained a piece of land, north of San Thome, from the local Rajah for an annual rent of 12,000 pagodas (At the time £600).

No one, other than Europeans, were allowed to live on this plot and it

became known as “White Town”.

A Fort was then developed and fortified by The East India Company and a large town developed being populated by Indian merchants, weavers and dyers. The first church services were probably undertaken by visiting ships chaplains.

The first church was built on the site in 1680 and over the years has developed into the large and beautiful church it is today. Full of history.

St. Mary’s church, Fort St. George, has been called “The Westminster Abbey of the east”. It is not only the oldest place of worship built by the British settlers in India and still in use, but it is believed to be the oldest British building of any kind in the whole of India. This building is architecturally very impressive.

The Fort is laid out in such a way that it would have been virtually impossible to attack without massive loss of life as its defensive structure and layout within has been constructed with great ingenuity.

I was duly impressed with this slightly different kind of Christian service that Sunday and attended three further services reading the first lesson each time of my attendances. Although being raised in the Catholic faith, I had no problem in attending this alternative Christian service.

more elaborate upgrad and may now be in a slightly different position within The Basilica…

Within the massive fortified grounds are two houses, one of which was the home of Robert (Clive of India) and the other was the home of the Duke of Wellington. Both buildings are now preserved as being of national importance.

Let me, at this point, continue with regard to one of The Twelve Apostles, namely Thomas, the Apostle, more commonly referred to as “Doubting Thomas”. This being the main subject matter relative to this story.

It is recorded that St. Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles, came to India in the first century AD, but it is apparent that this has been questioned by many of the Christian faith in India. However, in the last one hundred years or so, a great deal of research has been undertaken which more or less confirms the validity of the centuries old story and has now been validated as true.

Apparently there are some very early writings and references connecting St. Thomas with India and histories of various other saints also mention him in India.

From very early times there have been pilgrims to the tomb of The Apostle, St. Thomas in Mylapore, (St. Thomas Basilica, Chennai ) where I attended many Sunday services during my time in Chennai, Southern India. (Refer to photographs of the tomb of St. Thomas ).

The Portuguese built a new church on the site in 1523 but in 1893 Bishop Dom Da Silva decided to demolish the old church and built a new Gothic edifice church on the same site.

This is what is in existence today and was officially denoted a Cathedral in 1956.

A Dr. Rajendra Prasad, former President of India 1955, said in a celebration held in honour of The Apostle, “Remember that St. Thomas came to India when many countries in Europe had not yet become Christian…..and it is a matter of pride for us”.

It is widely reported that St. Thomas was brutally handled whilst in India by local people and that he sought refuge in the jungles of Little Mount local to the area. A small cave within the natural rock on this hillock afforded him ideal shelter. This cave is far from artificial being approximately sixteen feet in length and twelve feet in width. It is approximately seven foot at its highest point. A crevice of around five foot by two foot with two or three steps forms the entrance but it is very difficult to enter. There is rather small opening on the far side which allows a minimal amount of light to enter the cave, through which it is thought St. Thomas made his escape when being chased.

It is however difficult to imagine how anybody could squeeze through such a small opening.

The cave was perfect in many ways to hide from his pursuers and even has a spring within giving constant water flow.

It is reliably reported that St Thomas was tortured by his captors whilst trying to escape and was severely injured by means of an arrow in the back which subsequently brought about his death.

A small, but beautiful, little church has been built next to the cave and is known as St. Thomas on the Mount. Pope John Paul II visited both sites during his visit to India in

1986.

In the 9th century, King Alfred of England sent gifts to the tomb in Mylapore and this has been confirmed by various English historians.

Marco Polo is reported to have made a visit to the tomb in 1293 A.D. of which records still exist.

After the coming of the Portuguese to India in 1498, the tomb was actually opened. As to what happened to the full remains of St. Thomas, I could find little information other than a leg bone encased in a casket (purported to be that of St. Thomas) which is now on view within the confines of a dedicated museum adjacent to the Cathedral, along with a beautifully encased preserved arrowhead which is said to be the one which caused his death. (Refer to photograph). However, from the time of my attendance in 2000, the original position within The Cathedral of the tomb which contained the leg bone of St. Thomas has been upgraded and now includes a reclining figure of St. Thomas.

There was a geographical map of 1516 over his original tomb, which had a Latin script noting “HIC SEPULTUS EST S THOMAS”. …Here Lies Buried St. Thomas.

St Vincent de Paul St. Vincent de Paul was born to a poor peasant family in the French village of Pouy on 24 April 1581.He was ordained in 1600 and remained in Toulose for a time. In 1605, while on a ship travelling from Marseilles to Narbonne, he was captured, brought to Tunis and sold as a slave.

Two years later he and his master managed to escape, and both returned to France.

In 1617, two events changed his life.

After hearing the confession of a dying man he resolved to preach the Good News of Christ’s promised redemption, and later that year after appealing for help for a poor sick family he saw many local people bringing them aid. From that point forward he spent his life preaching missions to and providing relief to the poor. He even established hospitals for them. This work became his passion. He later extended his concern and ministry to convicts.

The need to evangelise and assist these souls was so great and the demands beyond his own ability to meet that he founded the Ladies of Charity, a lay institute of woman, to help, as well as a religious institute of priests - the Congregation of Priests of the Mission, commonly referred to now as the Vincentians

Many other Vincentian organisations followed.

St Vincent died in 1660 and was canonised in 1737.

The Start of the SVP Society The Society of St. Vincent de Paul began in Paris in 1833 when a young law student at the Sorbonne, Frédéric Ozanam, was challenged during a debate to demonstrate what he and his fellow Catholic students were personally doing to help the poor in Paris. Ozanam's reaction was immediate. Within weeks, Ozanam, at 20 years of age, and six of his peers formed the first "Conference of Charity." Under the conference, this group of seven men financed their works of charity out of their own pockets and from contributions of friends. They visited the poor in their homes, providing them with needed aid and assistance.

At the prompting of Monsieur Emmanuel Bailly and Sister Rosalie Rendu, superior of a convent of the Daughters of Charity, Ozanam soon placed the conference under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul who had spent his life in 16th century France serving the poor. Within a few years, the original group of seven grew to 600, spreading to 15 other cities and towns in France, numbering more than 2,000 members.

The Vincentians remain with us today with 800,000 members and 1,500,000 volunteers in 150 countries. In addition to his order of Vincentian priests, St. Vincent cofounded the Daughters of Charity along with St. Louise de Marillac. There are more than 18,000 Daughters today serving the needs of the poor in 94 countries. St. Vincent is sometimes referred to as "The Apostle of Charity" and "The Father of the Poor".

SVP Today Here is the description from the UK SVP Society: “The St Vincent de Paul Society (England & Wales) is part of an international Christian voluntary network dedicated to tackling poverty in all its forms by providing practical assistance to people in need. Our 10,000 members, motivated by their faith, visit vulnerable or isolated people across England and Wales and offer them friendship and practical support. The essence of our work is person-to-person contact and spending time with people is our greatest gift.”

Arundel’s Involvement Canon David has expressed the need for us to set up a branch of the St Vincent de Paul Society in our Arundel parish.

Once we have established a branch of the SVP in Arundel, we would need to identify those in need and how we could help them. There may be many people suffering in our own locality, who would benefit from this.

To quote Pope Francis: “This is a danger: we shut ourselves up in the parish, with our friends, within the movement, with the likeminded… but do you know what happens? When the Church becomes closed, she becomes an ailing Church, she falls ill! That is a danger. . . a Church closed in on herself is the same, a sick Church.”

We hope, once lockdown is over, to have a speaker come to Arundel and give us the benefit of their experience of working with the SVP. Although we are a small town, we have parishioners from a wide area, and hopefully we can set up an active and outgoing branch here, in the near future. Further developments will be published in the Parish Newsletter.

In front of me as I write sits “Sussex Uncovered - 3”,…….. a compelling 73 page dive into Sussex and its needs.

The report was researched and written by the Sussex Community Foundation (SCF).

The key finding of the research shows that there is substantial inequality in all areas of life in Sussex and many people actually struggle to get by every day. COVID19 highlighted and exacerbated these hardships. As a trustee of SCF I am very proud to say that from March to December 2020 SCF has given £2.7 million to community

… One thing is certain – the economic and social impact of the Covid-19 crisis will be with us for a very long time to come.

Many charities, like businesses, face an uncertain financial future and may not survive …

initiatives that strove to alleviate the dire consequences of COVID. I am delighted and humbled to be a trustee of SCF: I am just one of a very dedicated team who are united in wanting to change Sussex for the better. I have also found it an eye opening and rewarding experience to be a member of the Grants Giving committee.

How was SCF able to meet these vital needs so quickly and effectively??

Crawley-based Neurokinex Charitable Trust received £5,000 from our Sussex Crisis Fund to provide virtual physiotherapy programmes direct to children and adults living with paralysis.

SCF was founded in 2006 by the late Duke of Richmond and Gordon who had been deeply touched by the sufferings and deprivation he had encountered in many Sussex communities. The Duke felt a community foundation in Sussex would highlight the smaller charities and community groups often overlooked when local people and companies thought about giving to charity. He said: “It is, in my view, a scandal that there are areas in Sussex which are in the bottom 20% of national measures of social deprivation. At the same time, when local people or companies think of giving to charity they tend to think of large national bodies, because little is known about the small community groups on their doorsteps.”

The Lectionary is the book of readings we use in the liturgy One of the groups funded by the Rampion Fund in the autumn round was to an organisation called Feedback that runs Sussex Gleaning Network. The project takes volunteers to farms and orchards in Sussex to salvage fresh, surplus vegetables and fruit which otherwise would go to waste.

The Foundation can make a significant difference to local quality of life. This is about local communities working together for the welfare of all for many years to come.”

The Duke became our chair and was instrumental in the approaches that were then made to a number of individuals, companies and trusts inviting them to become founder donors. Their generous support funded the initial costs of setting up the organisation. So much so that when the Foundation started work in January 2006, it had already secured enough funds to cover three years’ running costs.

We are delighted that the 11th Duke of Richmond and Gordon agreed to be our new Parton in 2018.

In this last year the community has again come together in a massive way to make a difference. SCF, inculcated by its Christian founders with the humane values of helping those that are under-privileged and without help, rose to the challenge enabling the community to feel itself even more of a community adopting discerning but speedy processes to get funding where it was needed as quick as possible, It was hard and concentrated work but through the goodness of both regular and new donors we were able to provide practical aid - and hope – for the way forward.

How was it that the SCF came to be there in this unprecedented emergency?

and heart-warming. All charities were forced to adapt. New, innovative approaches allowed them to expand and deliver their services, local neighbourhoods set up new mutual support networks . Funding was urgently needed to meet these vital needs.

Sussex Community Foundation responded by setting up the Sussex Crisis Fund to enable charities and community groups working on the frontline in Sussex to support vulnerable people. The Grants team worked tirelessly for months to ensure funding was there within a week of application to allow vital needs to be met. It is from there that the £2.7 million pandemic support to which I have referred came. 614 grants were given to 465 individual groups; 115 of them were to groups applying for the first-time.

How much have we raised and given?

Since its establishment in 2006, the Foundation has given over £21 million in grants to over 2,500 community groups and is still managing to build a growing endowment for Sussex, currently standing at a further £24 million.

This endowment means the Foundation will be able to offer support to Sussex charities – it hopes in perpetuity.

And, besides our general endowment, we now have over 100 individual sub- funds, each set up by

local Sussex donors, whom we support to make the most of their local giving, reaching the local causes close to their hearts.

On our doorstep Arundel groups we have funded include Home-Start Arun, Worthing and Adur who support local families going through tough times including bereavement, feeling isolated and poor mental health. The risk of Covid-19 and isolation has greatly exacerbated the stress under which families are living. The group received a grant of £5,000 in April 2020 to provide ‘Packs of Joy’ for local families and children in Arundel and Walberton wards, struggling under lockdown. Each pack contained age-appropriate books, colouring sheets, crayons, games, and puzzles to every child. The funding also helped to support the costs of volunteer’ telephone calls to families, ten staff, working from home, training existing volunteers with telephone support / use of Zoom online, training new telephone support volunteers, DBS checks for new volunteers, and delivering the Packs of Joy to families.

Also funded with a £4,000 grant was St. Nicholas Church in Arundel to support the continuation of two Arundel-wide Covid-19 response programmes – the Arundel Community Support Hub and Arundel Community Aid. And we helped the Ford Forward

The future One thing is certain – the economic and social impact of the Covid-19 crisis will be with us for a very long time to come. Many charities, like businesses, face an uncertain financial future and may not survive.

Some readers may be surprised to learn that before the pandemic our research showed that some 37,000 children were living in poverty across Sussex. Yes, sadly, we have some of the country’s most deprived communities who are likely to continue to be particularly badly affected.

I hope you will all find it is very encouraging to learn that the Sussex Community Foundation is about to relaunch an appeal for the Sussex Crisis Fund to help communities to recover from the impact of lock down and address the longer-term economic impacts of the pandemic. This will go to provide grants to advise and support those particularly, but not exclusively, suffering from digital exclusion, unemployment, debt advice, young people, mental health and isolation.

Packs of Joy - appropriate gifts for children struggling under lockdown

Community Chaplaincy (the ‘FFCC’) which supports prisoners in becoming positive active community citizens upon release. They support soon-to-be ex-prisoners to build healthy relationships in the community creating positive support networks to help them settle. The aim is to connect them with the appropriate services and communities to meet their needs and reduce the risk of reoffending. The FFCC received a £4,004 grant last November to fund increased working hours for the Community Chaplain, as a result of the growth in demand for their services (partly generated by Covid-19).

An ancient Celtic saying runs, ‘It is by sheltering each other that people survive’. It still applies!

But in the western part of West Sussex the surprising thing is that although this is where the Foundation was established, it receives relatively few requests and applications for help from out of the Arun and Chichester Districts! I hope this short note will encourage you to tell people about the support we provide – and to join us, as a donor and/or introduce us to your community initiative.

The Diocesan Invited Mission

by Louise Sharp The Diocesan Mission which began this Lent was initiated by Bishop Richard and developed by the Diocesan Formation Team.

The weekly videos explore God’s invitation to enter into a relationship with Him and what it means for our lives. These videos comprise an exploration of the theme for the week and a personal testimony and have been uplifting, challenging and informative.

Invited will run over the coming years at different times of year: Eastertide 2022, Advent 2023, Lent 2024 and Eastertide 2025 culminating in the celebration of 60 years of the Diocese.

Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members, and to the deterioration of some older ones.

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on 24 October in the church.

So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

Year 8 will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Church basement on Friday at 7pm. The Congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

Reflections on the Diocesan Bereavement Support Course The Ministry of Consolation Bereavement Support Course took place in early 2021. The Course Tutor was Kathy Quint and the course ran from 12th Jan to 9th March. There was an additional Trauma and Impact of Covid session on 17th March. The course is administered by Rev Deacon Simon South,Marriage & Family Life Project Officer for the Diocese.

Participants from the Cathedral parish took part in the above course with the intention to have a Bereavement Ministry here. They have given their individual reflections on their experience of the course below. Further courses are planned for the future, timing to be advised.

bereaved. It seems an excellent idea for the Cathedral to enlarge a group to help anyone who has been affected by loss whether or not it is related to Covid who needs help.

Canon David has enabled members of the parish to attend an excellent 8 week course of weekly Zoom meetings to improve skills and knowledge of participants. I was lucky to be chosen to go on this course. In addition to the zoom meetings we were also given a reading list from which to choose two books, as well as websites, media including newspapers, films and tv programs to watch. It was a bit challenging but useful to be asked to write a reflection on course days and other materials we studied. It was a really stimulating and interesting time.

Like many people I have felt frustrated with Lockdown & that life was going on without meaning or being able to contribute to society.

The course gave me motivation and ability to help people who have been bereaved in the parish as well as getting to know others in the parish a little better. I would thoroughly recommend people to apply for next year’s course, especially gentlemen as we would benefit from some more male participants.

This has been a year like no other and there will be many in the parish who are grieving the loss of a loved one or the loss of a way of life. The course has taught us that loss takes many forms and we grieve in our own individual way and in our own time.

You may welcome the opportunity to meet and share with others in a similar situation or just need a listening ear. We will be here to support you.

Margaret Robinson: I was one of four in our parish to undertake this year’s training on Bereavement Support – Ministry of Consolation – organised by the Diocese.

This was a bit of a leap in the dark for me as I had no idea what to expect but it surpassed my expectations. It consisted of 8 sessions on zoom lasting roughly three and a half hours with ‘lectures’ and break out groups. Each week a different element of bereavement was covered.

There were 16 participants in total from different parishes and it was interesting to get to chat to them in our small groups and discuss openly and honestly our thoughts and experiences. I found it a safe environment to discuss and share some elements of my own losses that had been locked away and I think most of us felt the same.

a child and suicide, but these were covered in a gentle and spiritual way.

I think these training sessions will be run every year. It really was an enriching experience and well worth taking that leap.

Betsy Vernon: Since completing the same diocesan bereavement support course (as it was called then) a couple of years back. I too was enlightened and enthused by the depth of information given, and the group activities that I and the other members from the various diocesan parishes got involved with over the various weeks of the course.

I started, with the support of Louise in the office and Canon Tim with Deacon David, to propose some visual support for our parishioners, in times of their bereavement.

At the cathedral entrance was placed a display board showing the most recent deaths and funerals that had taken place as a reminder of who had recently passed away. Lockdown has restricted this though it will continue as we come out of it.

“Thinking of you” and Bereavement cards were sent out to those families who had lost someone acknowledging how we, as a parish, were holding them in our prayers. This continues, and annual cards will also be added as a sign of our parish’s continued support.

though it is hoped it will be reinstated this year.

A new team has formed spearheaded by Canon David and there will be a launch of this group and what it stands for, what it wants to do with your help and support, on each of the Sunday masses on 12th and 13th June. Look out for more details in due course.

The weekly coffee mornings after the 9.30am Mass were very successful in bringing people together after Mass and many looked forward to that social chat each week. Again, Covid has restricted this and although an online zoom one successfully ran for 13 weeks at the beginning of lockdown and when the cathedral was not open, there is no substitute for face-to-face contact, especially in times of loss or ongoing illnesses.

In November, there has been the annual Blessing of the Graves on a Sunday afternoon and after that, was introduced an afternoon tea in the Cathedral Centre with prayer cards given as a memento. Last November 2020 Bishop Richard started and will continue this year, a deanery mass for those who have died during this Covid pandemic. Each deanery held their Mass in their parish church and ours was at the cathedral. Look out for the date, this year.

Also in November; a month of remembering our loved ones (Service of Remembrance 11/11 at 11.00 am) I started a book of prayers that people could write in. Unfortunately, again, due to Covid this could not happen last year,
