Friends Summer 2026 Vespers

Entrance to the Vespers Service After a morning of rain we all thought we might have to resort to plan B and hold the reception in the Cathedral Centre. However, all was well and a wonderful sunny and balmy evening was just perfect.

Sunlight filtered through the lovely rose window in the Cathedral and the beautiful voices of the choir, under the direction of the Director of Music, Elizabeth Stratford was both uplifting and inspiring. Members and guests included the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex Lady Emma Barnard, Dr John Godfrey DL, David Shilton, Chairman of Arundel Museum and John Siebert, Chairman of

Chichester Cathedral Friends. We were treated to a liturgy that combined prayer, choral music and prayers of reflection and intercessions. Canon Jonathan Martin presided and and was joined on the sanctuary by the Cathedral Dean, with Cathedral Dean Father Stephen Dingley and Father Richard Biggerstaff, supported by Deacon Roger Stone.

After vespers, by courtesy of His Grace the Duke of Norfolk, our President members and guests were invited to a social gathering in the Collector Earl’s Garden. A chance to enjoy chatting to old friends and meeting new friends. Delicous canapes were served by our caterer Cathy Roberts and her helpers, all to the accompaniment of a light jazz trio led by Tim Parsons.

Those who wished were given a guided tour of the gardens by Head Gardener, Martin Duncan which was much appreciated. Sadly Martin and his wife Georgina are retiring and this will be the last time he will be able to share his vast knowledge with us. We wish them both a very happy retirement.

This year’s event was a wonderful occasion and enjoyed immensely by all who attended.

It is hoped that others will be encouraged to join the Friends to help to support the preservation of our cherished Cathedral.
