Editor’s Note

Welcome to this, our third edition of the online Proclaimer. I think you will agree that Bryden has worked his usual magic and produced a very professional looking magazine for us. We hope you enjoy reading it, and perhaps will feel able to make a contribution – as you can see we include a wide variety of articles of personal, spiritual or topical interest. One note – we have a piece on three published writers in our parish – if there are any more of you out there we’d love to hear about you.

The iPad display has been set up in the Cathedral and this is now located at the end of the left front row. It has access to Proclaimer editions within the iBooks application on the iPad. The Cathedral and Cathedral Friends websites can also be accessed using Safari. Full instructions on using the iPad display are provided on the iPad stand.

Introduction from Canon David

Welcome to the summer edition of the Parish Proclaimer and thank you to our contributors. The articles reflect the varied activities of our parishioners and their interests. One of the arguments I make in favour of belonging to a faith community is the different people you can meet and learn from in the Church. That is not to deny that the worship of God is the primary reason for our existence, but sometimes we need a way into what may seem like a really big task. Sometimes our journey of faith is like a programme of study where we gradually put into place the building blocks which lead up to the core topics. The events of life sometimes thrust us into the ‘deepend’ but God is always journeying with us offering us friendship through faith, building up trust step by step.

Jesus says in the Gospel of John I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my Father (John 15:15). That is why our contributors are so generous, as through their words they share with us something of their journey from which we can gain encouragement, insight and the joy of living, enabling us to build up our faith through the normal process of growth.

This is the way news spreads including the Gospel, in the latter case by people sharing the ‘good news’ with one another. Pope Francis says that the content of this sharing the Gospel should be along these lines: ‘Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you’ (Evangelii Gaudium 64). We may not always use these words exactly and there may be situations where we are unable to use many words and our witness has to be through our deeds. That latter point is for another day, here in this issue of the Parish Proclaimer though we can read those articles that show us the ways in which, directly and indirectly, Jesus draws alongside us to enlighten, strengthen and free us.

The Rosary is an echo of the prayer of Mary, her perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive Incarnation which began in her virginal womb. With the Rosary, the Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his love.

Devotion to the Rosary is one of the most notable features of popular Catholic spirituality. So, let us remember Pope John Paul II when he placed the Rosary at the very centre of Christian spirituality and called it “among the finest and most praiseworthy traditions of Christian contemplation.”

English Pilgrimages Part 2

LONDON – The Martyrs of Tyburn ‘…I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained…’

(Revelation 6:9) For more than six hundred years from 1196, the wooden gallows situated at Tyburn Village, near where Marble Arch in London now is, was the hanging place for as many as 50,000 criminals, traitors, political foes and rebels.

The location of the gallows, known as Tyburn Tree, is today marked by a circular plaque embedded into the pavement on a traffic island at the entry to Edgware Road.

Tyburn Tree gallows was also the path to sainthood for many Catholic Martyrs – between 1535 and 1681 around 400 Catholics were executed there, of whom 105 are considered martyrs. (The word ‘martyr’ comes from a word originally meaning ‘witness’ and the brave souls were witnessing to their faith in Jesus Christ by laying down their lives for Him).

Not all of the martyrs’ names are recorded for history but the Martyrs' Shrine at Tyburn Convent honours more than 350 Catholic Martyrs (including the 105 known Tyburn Martyrs) who witnessed to their faith by dying for it during the Reformation.

The Shrine, with its Martyrs’ Altar, also includes a replica of the triangular frame gallows that was erected in 1571during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. There are also relics of the Martyrs, displays, and a brief film history of the Tyburn Tree. Pilgrim groups may arrange to have Holy Mass celebrated in honour of the Martyrs and individuals are very welcome to visit and pray at the shrine.

According to the Shrine website, among those honoured are: Edmund Campion: Jesuit, died at Tyburn 1st December 1581. A brilliant scholar at Oxford, Campion became a Catholic, and joined the Jesuits. He worked in Prague until 1580. He returned to England, where he led an adventurous life encouraging and reconciling Catholics and eluding priest-hunters. He was

imprisoned, tortured and sentenced to die.

Oliver Plunkett: The last Tyburn Martyr, died at Tyburn 1st July 1681. Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland, he was brought to London for a rigged trial, found guilty of treason and sentenced to die the traitor’s death. He was drawn to Tyburn on a hurdle in his pontifical robes.

John Roberts: Benedictine monk and Welshman, died at Tyburn 10th December, 1610. He became a monk at Valladolid and Compostela and went back to England in 1602. Imprisoned and exiled many times, he always returned. He worked hard for victims of the plague.

He was finally arrested when celebrating Mass and taken to prison.

Margaret Ward: Was hanged at Tyburn 30th August1588, for assisting and relieving a priest. She smuggled a rope to a priest in Bridewell prison and thus enabled him to escape. The rope was traced to her and she was arrested, hung up by the hands and flogged. Never in her life had she done anything of which she repented less.

Ralph Sherwin: Priest who trained at the Venerable English College and died at Tyburn on 1st December 1581. Sentenced to death for allegedly conspiring to murder the Queen, Elizabeth I, he prayed for her beneath the gallows.

John Houghton: Carthusian Prior, died 4th May 1535, because he would not acknowledge the supremacy of King Henry VIII over the Church in England. His last words were, as the executioner prepared to tear out his heart: “Good Jesus, what will you do with my heart?” Seven Carthusians died at Tyburn. (www.tyburnconvent.org.uk/martyrs-shrine)

YORK – St Margaret Clitherow, the Pearl of York Daughter of the Sheriff of York and married in 1571, aged 15, to a wealthy butcher, Margaret converted to the Catholic faith three years later and, although her husband continued to be a member of the Protestant Established Church, he more than tolerated his wife’s new and dangerous attachment (his own brother was a Catholic priest).

Margaret was fined and then imprisoned for failing to attend the established Protestant church services –she gave birth to her third child while in jail and then went on pilgrimage to Tyburn gallows where several Catholic resisters had been hanged…but that was not the limit of her daring acts of resistance.

She hid fugitive priests in a variety of places; in a priest hole (hiding place) in her own house, in an adjoining house and in another house nearby that she rented. She even sent her older son abroad to the English College to train as a priest. Any of these actions could have led to a death sentence…and one did.

In 1585 her house was searched, the priest hole and a priest’s vestments were discovered and Margaret was arrested and charged with the crime of harbouring Catholic priests. Refusing to plead (possibly to prevent her children being forced to testify and being tortured in the process) she was found guilty and sentenced to death, although she was pregnant with her fourth child.

Her death was particularly gruesome. In 1586 she was placed under her own door and pressed to death by heavy rocks being placed on to the door - even Queen Elizabeth wrote a letter to the people of York stating that Margaret should have been spared that terrible fate.

Numbered among the Forty Martyrs of England & Wales who were canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1970, St Margaret Clitherow is patroness of the Catholic Women’s League, co-patroness of the Latin Mass Society and a patron of businesswomen, converts and martyrs.

Her shrine is at 35-36 The Shambles in York, where her husband had his butcher’s shop. The Shambles is a wonderfully atmospheric, narrow cobbled street with overhanging buildings that is said to be one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe.

FAVERSHAM – St Jude, the Saint of Desperate or Lost Cases Have you noticed the number of ‘thank you’ notices addressed to St Jude in the personal ads columns of Catholic newspapers? It is a tradition to publish thanks for favours received and, because St Jude is the patron saint for ‘desperate’ or ‘difficult’ cases, the subsequent appreciation for a successful outcome can be overwhelming and truly joyful.

So, who was St Jude? Jude (also referred to as Thaddeus, Judas Thaddaeus or Lebbaeus) was one of the Apostles, possibly even a relation of Jesus. Popular tradition holds that he preached the Gospel throughout the Middle East and Armenia before suffering martyrdom about 65 AD in Beirut.

Again, tradition relates that early pilgrims to his tomb found him a most powerful intercessor with reports of many miraculous cures. It is also claimed that God appeared to St Bridget of Sweden and to St Bernard, asking them to accept St Jude as 'The Patron Saint of the Impossible'.

Today, St Jude is venerated by many Christian denominations and by Moslems – and the Faversham Shrine of St Jude also reports visits by devout Hindus.

Awareness of and devotion to St Jude in the London and South East region was increased when the Carmelite community began sending out St Jude prayer cards with their newsletters. The Second World War saw a huge increase in interest and led to the building of the shrine in the 1950s.

Pilgrims to the National Shrine of St Jude first pass through the parish church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Apart from the church’s beautiful murals and carvings, there are two shrines; a small one of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague and one of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

The way to the Shrine of St Jude is decorated with stained glass, ceramic plaques and icons featuring religious subjects – with a strong focus on Carmelite Saints. Within the Inner Shrine is a sixteenth-century Spanish gilt and polychrome wood statue of St Jude and a reliquary that displays a bone fragment relic of St. Jude, which is used to bless oils for use in healing services. Alongside the shrine is a Repository offering gifts and souvenirs. (www.stjudeshrine.org.uk )

ARUNDEL - Shrine of St Philip Howard You do not need to travel to be a pilgrim. The Shrine of the martyr Earl of Arundel, St. Philip Howard (1557-1595) can be found in the North Transept of our own Arundel Cathedral.

A Cambridge graduate, handsome, quick-witted and articulate, Philip Howard must have dazzled when he first attended Queen Elizabeth’s court.

Unfortunately, the pleasures of life turned his head and he neglected both his religious and his marital responsibilities.

Aged 24, he attended a disputation between a group of Catholic figures, including the Jesuit Edmund Campion, and their Anglican adversaries, led by the Deans of St Paul’s and Windsor. Suffering from the effects of his torture and not allowed time or books for his preparation, Fr Campion nevertheless impressed the onlookers – including Philip Howard – so much that they looked for an acquittal.

Philip returned to Arundel shaken and troubled, considering the likely cost of arrest and death if he were to reconcile with the Catholic Church.

He made his decision, was reconciled and, shortly afterwards sailed abroad, seeking religious liberty.

Cathedral Advent Vespers 2021

Marking the beginning of the new ecclesiastical year, Advent, is always a special time. On what was indubitably the coldest night of the year with an arctic blast taking ruthless advantage of the magnificent but exposed position of the Cathedral located high above the Arun Valley, The Friends held their traditional celebration of Pontifical Vespers. Civic leaders from across the Diocese were invited to join members and friends at what is always a splendid occasion of choral music and worship. This year, notwithstanding the ravages of the pandemic with significantly reduced numbers of choristers, the service was celebrated with just as much joy and enthusiasm. One would never have known as their wonderfully pure voices soared high into the great stone vaults warming hearts and lifting spirits. It was truly joyful.

New years are about looking forward to better times. Advent is no different. And the weather did not put people off!

In his opening remarks Bishop Richard commented that this, of all new years, was one for hope for the future. Thinking of the events of the last couple of years we could be forgiven for thinking that across the world there was very little cause for optimism with spiralling infection rates, political unrest, families separated, violence in many parts of the world, and an uncertain political and economic future. And yet this is exactly what new beginnings should be about, and it was so encouraging that so

many of our civic dignitaries, who worked so tirelessly in public and voluntary service, were present signalling their commitment to leading the effort for a better future.

It was also a particularly special day for one of the choral scholars, Kristian Thorkildsen, a cellist studying performance at the University of Chichester. It was his 21st birthday, and rather than being with his friends and family, when the congregation had arrived and were waiting for the service to begin, he chose instead to everyone’s delight, to celebrate by singing two tenor arias from ‘The Messiah’ [‘Comfort Ye’, and ‘Ev’ry Valley’] It was enthralling.

The congregation was encouraged, “…never ever to close your mind and heart to the presence of God”. He emphasised how those in public service, and they were present in the congregation, through their service to others are showing the way to “the kind of joy, the real happiness that St Paul writes about. Be open to it, welcome it, not just for yourselves, for ourselves, but for those whom you are called to serve.

Mothers' Day Breakfast at the

Cathedral Centre For many years, Adam & Betsy Vernon have organised a Mothering Sunday breakfast in the cathedral centre, for more years than they can remember!

Unfortunately, Covid and lockdown curbed this and so it was delightful to reinstate this parish event; open to all ladies of the parish, held after the 9.15am Mass.

The ladies are invited to a sit down breakfast - on a long set of tables decorated with white table clothes, flowered serviettes and spring flowers arranged on the tables.

The gentlemen of the parish served teas and coffees as croissants, pain au chocolate and orange juice/apple juice were consumed by the invited ladies.

About 40 place settings were laid up the night before.

Canon David and Eddy were fully involved; their first experience of this event. Thanks go to those gentlemen who helped serve.

St Philip’s School Update

It has been a very busy term in school. With restrictions lifted, we are rescheduling many events that have been postponed. It has been lovely to have trips, events and visits taking place.

Cafod volunteers came into school to lead an assembly on the work they carry out in Sierra Leone. It was a great opportunity for the children to see how children in other countries learn and live. The volunteers talked about how day to day life is for these children after the civil war and how such small amounts of donations can be used to feed families for the year. We hope to do some fundraising during the Summer Term.

Marley in Year 4 organised a cake sale. We had many, many delicious donations for the sale and Marley and her team raised £445. This made a total of £920. Ruby in Reception Class made sunflower planting kits for every child in the school and asked for donations to be made online and Tallulah and Matilda organised a lemonade and cake sale. This raised a further £475. We have been approached by a few families locally who are happy to host Ukrainian families. We are delighted that we will be able to offer school places for those who need it in the year groups where we have space.

It might surprise many people to hear that faith or religious activity makes up less than half of the work of a chaplain in prison. As a Roman Catholic chaplain I have a duty to attend to the faith needs of that community (approximately 20% of the population in both prisons where I

work) while sharing in the duty to pastorally attend to the needs of all prisoners and staff. In addition to running weekly faith groups and Mass I share in the daily duty of meeting all prisoners on their first day, all on the hospital wing, all in isolation, all in drug and alcohol detox and all on their day of release. We conduct memorials, provide bereavement support, and help men in their resettlement and in connecting with a place of worship in the community.

Jesus shared the parable of the Prodigal Son to reinforce the truth that God the Father is very close to ‘the least of these brothers and sisters’. I experience this closeness on a daily basis through, for example, the testimonies of men who have met Jesus in their cells, the hunger for Baptism, the desire to give to charity, to watch out for the vulnerable prisoner on the wing, the reverence for the Word and daily prayer, and the deep humility, remorse and repentance of so many.

I hope that I am able to bring some light and hope into the lives of the prisoners and staff in the prisons in which I work, but I know that, through this work – this walk with the least of my brothers – I come to know, love, and follow my God more closely.

Please pray for prisoners, prison chaplains and staff, and the families of those in prison.

Walking 100km for Alzheimer’s Research “Race to the King”

I am really concerned about the number of people I know who are suffering with dementia. Since my mum had dementia and passed away in 2019, I have been much more aware of the symptoms and realise the devastating impact it can have on individuals and their families.

Therefore, over the last few years I have been raising money for Alzheimer's Research by completing walking marathons. Last year I completed an organised walk called Race to the King which was a double marathon, one marathon each day over two days, and I am delighted to say that I raised well over £900 from 33 supporters. is working with the Drug Discovery Alliance on over 20 potential new treatments for dementia right now and there are over a dozen dementia treatments being tested in the final stages of clinical trials.

In June this year I'm completing the Race to the King again but it follows a different route and covers 100km (just about 62miles) over the two days. The walk is based in West Sussex and starts at Goodwood Racecourse and covers a large figure of ‘8’ including some of the South Downs as well as coastal areas. On the first day we do a large loop down to Chichester and Bosham then back to Goodwood for overnight camping, then on day two, we do a loop to the East and come over to Arundel and Amberley. So a great new challenge!

Sacred Scripture

As our Catechism informs us, “God is the author of Sacred Scripture. The divinely revealed realities, which are contained and presented in the text of Sacred Scripture, have been written down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. For Holy Mother Church, relying on the faith of the apostolic age, accepts as sacred and canonical the books of the Old and the New Testaments, whole and entire, with all their parts, on the grounds that, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author, and have been handed on as such to the Church herself…. Sacred Scripture must be read and interpreted in the light of the same Spirit by whom it was written.”

The Canon of Scripture: It was by the apostolic Tradition that the Church discerned which writings are to be included in the list of the sacred books. This complete list is called the Canon of Scripture. It includes 46 books for the Old Testament and 27 for the New. Our Catechism informs us that “the Second Vatican Council indicates three criteria for interpreting Scripture in accordance with the Spirit who inspired it:-

1) Be especially attentive to the content and unity of the whole Scripture which is God’s plan.

2) Read the Scripture within the living tradition of the whole Church.

Scripture is written principally in the Church’s heart, rather than in documents and records, for the Church carries in her Tradition the living memorial of God’s Word, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives her the spiritual interpretation of the Scripture.

3) Be attentive to the analogy of faith. By ‘analogy of faith’ we mean the coherence of the truths of faith among themselves and within the whole plan of Revelation”.

It may sometimes, perhaps, appear that it is easier for us to learn more from the New Testament than from the Old Testament – perhaps we are drawn in this way by the fact that the central object of the New Testament is the life of Jesus Christ: “his acts, teachings, Passion and glorification, and his Church’s beginnings under the Spirit’s guidance” as stated in our Catechism. Also, the New Testament incorporates the Gospels which are the heart of all the Scriptures ‘because they are our principal source for the life and teaching of the Incarnate Word, our Saviour’. The fourfold Gospel holds a uniqu place in the Church, as is evident both in the veneration which the liturgy accords it and in the surpassing attraction it has exercised on the saints at all times: “There is no doctrine which could be beter, more precious and more splendid than the text of the Gospel. Behold and retain what our Lord and Master, Christ, has taught by his words and accomplished by his deeds.”

Christians now read the Old Testament in our time, in the light and knowledge of Christ crucified and risen. However, the Old Testament retains its own intrinsic value as Revelation reaffirmed by our Lord himself. Besides, the New Testament has to be read in the light of the Old. The New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New.

The Catechism states: “The Church has always venerated the divine Scriptures as she venerated the Body of the Lord – both nourish and govern the whole Christian life. ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’.”

However, the Old Testament is an indispensable part of Sacred Scripture. Its books “are divinely inspired and retain a permanent value, for the Old Covenant has never been revoked.” The Catechism states ‘”these writings are a storehouse of sublime teaching on God and of sound wisdom on human life, as well as a wonderful treasury of prayers; in them, too, the mystery of our salvation is present in a hidden way.

Mary Harding nee Gidman

Mary was born in Southlands Hospital, Shoreham on 22nd December 1947.

Mary was also part of the rota for weekly counting of the monies at the Cathedral and latterly volunteering in the Cathedral shop.

Her faith was very strong and she also had the privilege, after she retired from work, to go on the annual Lourdes Pilgrimage as a helper. Something she greatly enjoyed and in 2016, the last time she went, was to witness the great honour of two benches dedicated to Lady Sarah Clutton being installed in the domain in Lourdes.

Another venture was being one of the founding members of the ‘Walking for Pleasure’ group which ran for 13 years. She also joined the Arundel Flower Arranging group, and worked part time in Belinda’s Tea Rooms in Tarrant Street.

There was still something missing in her life and it wasn’t until the birth of her first granddaughter, Fern, in 2012 and her second granddaughter, Gwen, in 2015 that she felt her life was complete.

If there was ever a doting grandmother, it was Mary, and she was so often seen pushing one or the other of ‘her girls’ around the town or down to Swanbourne Lake. She was in her element. She adored them and they her.

The shock to her only son Philip, Faith and all her family and friends in April last year when she received her diagnosis cannot be described. She carried on stoically until the end. She died peacefully, with Philip at her side, on that Saturday evening, 31st July 2021.

She is so greatly missed by so many people, God bless her, may she rest in peace.

Financial Report 2021 This has been another very difficult year, to add to the two previous ones, brought about largely by Covid but also a number of unexpected costs relating to the buildings.

In the three years our reserves were almost wiped out. If it had not been for a very generous legacy of £50,000 last summer it would have been necessary to obtain a loan from the Diocese.

Like any household our parish has to: •

Prepare for maintenance which is ongoing in a building of this age and significance.

Cover the costs of the many special events held here throughout the year.

In addition to the above expenses the Diocese, supported by the Cathedral Friends, provides an annual budget towards the maintenance costs. After taking all this into account the costs of running the Cathedral come to approximately £6,000 per week.

The offertory collection is a vital source of income for the parish. The Planned Giving drive carried out last autumn helped to boost this and encouraged parishioners to review their financial commitments and, in many cases, sign up to Gift Aid.

Wherever possible, parishioners are asked to gift aid their donations, thus benefitting the parish by an extra 25%.

Life

The threats to life of the pandemic and global warming have caused us to consider how life started and it can be sustained. As the COVID-19 pandemic started, I was inspired by the weekly Reflections offered

by Canon David Parmiter and by my discussions with him. With a lifetime background in relevant science, I agreed with the CRC Division of the publishers Taylor and Francis to write a book What is Life and How Might it be Sustained: Reflections in a Pandemic, and this will be published in July 2022.

Cosmology is the branch of astronomy involving the origin of the universe, from the Big Bang to today. An important early participant was Galileo (1564-1642) in Italy who proposed that the earth moves around the sun, but this brought him into conflict with the

his theory of evolution, but like Galileo he came into conflict with the Catholic Church, until Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI) cautiously accepted his views in 2009.

My own early research investigated biological markers in primitive bacteria which grow on methane and found that they produced markers akin to those found in ancient sediments about 3.2 billion years old, indicating that they may have been one of the first forms of life on the planet. is at least one bacterium associated with every living cell in our bodies. Some are harmful and cause disease, but others can be beneficial and protect against disease. They group as communities, now known as microbiomes, and the figure on Page 88 shows such a community in the human gut. Getting a balance in favour of healthy bacteria can prevent many diseases and give us healthy and longer lives. Bacteria are very small (about a millionth of a metre), but viruses are even smaller (less than one tenth the size of a bacterium) and do not exist as distinct cells even though they carry genetic information which can cause or prevent disease. The challenge in pandemic was to combat a particular virus, COVID-19, and its

variants. Fortunately, against the odds, vaccines to prevent infection were developed much quicker than many scientists and medical practitioners thought would be possible. Some drug therapies were also developed to cure those infected, but we need more.

Imaging has become immensely powerful in determining the health of our bodies, but it is also increasingly powerful in determining the health of the planet on which life depends. My own work has also used such imagery to monitor deforestation. The livelihoods of the about 1.2 billion people, or one fifth of the world’s population, depend on forests. Deforestation is also a major factor in climate change, which can compromise the supply of food to us all. Toxic chemicals in the environment can have negative effects on the biosphere and this was identified many years ago by Rachel Carson in her book Silent Spring and Jim Lovelock in his book Gaia. However, in my opinion one of the best critical analyses of environmental dangers is by Pope Francis in his Encyclical Letter in 2015 Laudito Si’.

Richard Dawkins in his books The God Delusion and Outgrowing God says there is no reason to invoke God in the creation and protection of life. However, he provides no proof for his opinion. It must be admitted as Christians that we cannot prove the opposite, but the biblical evidence is strong, and in my opinion, faith is vital in our future. While writing my latest book I asked Bishop Richard where God is during pandemic and he replied, ‘he is present in the sick and dying and in those who care for them’. We must take comfort from his words.

Our Writers!

We are lucky to have (at least) 3 published writers in our parish here at Arundel: Ian Caws a prizewinning poet, Alwyn Dow who has published several novels, the latest of which is described here, Professor Jim Lynch OBE, FRSC, FRSB, FRSA, FRGS, Distinguished Professor of Life Sciences Emeritus, Centre for Environment and Sustainability, University of Surrey.

Ian Caws has published 11 collections of poetry since 1975, the latest of which is The Canterbury Road. In 1988, he was runner up in the National Poetry Competition, having been a prizewinner the year before. He and his wife, Hilary, have been in West Sussex since the late 60s and parishioners at Arundel since Hilary became a teacher at St Philip’s School in the early 1990s.

“I am not sure why I began writing poetry but I was 17 and our class had had

Ian Caws Wilde’s “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” read to us some years before and it made an impression. 5 years later I produced a ballad of my own and so it went on. I showed it to a schoolmaster who introduced me to the poetry of Edward Thomas who had lived 2 miles from the school. Thomas’ influence has been lifelong.

“Time passed and Hilary and I found ourselves living in the same village as the Welsh poet, the late Leslie Norris, who became a great friend and an attentive and helpful mentor. I also learned from Ted Walker

who lived nearby and inspired with his poetry about Sussex.

The poetry of the First World War, especially that of Wilfred Owen, obsessed me for a while.

“I began publishing in magazines, here and abroad, picked up the odd prize, including an Eric Gregory Award and runner-up prize in the National Poetry Competition. Over the years I published 15 collections. most recently “Founder’s Day” with Dempsey & Windle. “The Ragman Totts” was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.”

Alwyn Dow is a much travelled and experienced author with four publications to his name. He says that his books, including the latest “The Dawn Birds”, are a mixture of fact and fiction, namely ‘faction’. He adds that his underlying themes usually involve extreme moral dilemmas usually with a large helping of Catholicism and Conscience. He attributes this preoccupation not only to his mother, who nurtured his own faith as a Catholic, but also to his Brentwood School motto, “Virtue, Learning & Manners”, and both have been inspirational in writing this book.

“I have previously written 3 novels: “Bath Buns at Sally Lunns”, a mystery thriller, “The Saga of Doubtful Sound” a musical journey set in racist America, and “Journey to the Stars” in which the alien Gondians seek to return to their home planet of Gondia.

All three have been published in the USA. “I began my first book when I retired from teaching, living in Bath, hence the title. That was in 2012 so I am now a Centurion. I have no specific book events planned at present but would welcome suggestions for a screenplay.”

The Dawn Birds This is a story in which love, faith and loyalty collide over a series of decades. The tale is told in turn by three friends who meet at college, namely Elda, Luke and Gordon. She is a young student mesmerised by the personality of ‘Father’ Luke who is a Jesuit priest with ideas that don’t always accord with Church dogma, especially when it comes to love. ‘He loves me, he loves me not,’ she would repeat at night whilst he knelt dutifully at his prayers.

An antidote to Luke was Gordon and his kilt. And so, they went their separate ways only to meet up again later in life, in Africa, with a whole new set of challenges, disasters and ultimate triumph.

He has travelled extensively giving over 60 keynote international lectures and published or edited 15 books and 300 papers and patents, as well as serving on many international boards. He was awarded the UNESCO Prize in Microbiology and Einstein Medal, Distinguished Scientist of the US Department of Agriculture, and the Japanese Government Research Award for Foreign Specialists. Jim is a keen sportsman and is married to Mary; they have four children and seven grandchildren.
