Editor’s Note Welcome to this, our second edition of the online Parish Proclaimer.

Many thanks to all the contributors, without whom there would be no Proclaimer!

We have been blessed with many interesting and informative articles, some of general interest and some of more local interest.

Our deadline stretched this time, but hopefully those articles still in the pipeline, will be ready for our Spring edition.

Again, it is Bryden Isbister’s great skill that has made this magazine look so stylish and professional.

We would welcome hearing from anyone who would be able to write a piece of interest.

There are printed copies of this for those who have no access to a computer - if you know of anyone in this situation, please let the Parish Office know.

Introduction from Canon David

Welcome to this edition of the Proclaimer and thank you to all those who have contributed, it is much appreciated. Advent is a season of hope and looking forward as we prepare for the feast of Christmas. The articles found here encourage us as we see different people reflect on our faith.

Some have focussed on giants of our faith like St. Paul whilst others have shared with us their experiences with the most vulnerable such as working with the group supporting those detained at Gatwick Airport whilst their claims for Asylum are processed. In between we see those raising money for charity, supporting Christians in the Holy Land, sharing experiences of Christian ministry, pilgrimage, the contribution of religious orders and tradition in the life faith. All these contributions bring us hope and encouragement as we see the diversity of gifts faith brings and the comfort of knowing that we are not alone as we follow Christ. We are indeed part of a great cloud of witness as written about in chapter 12 of the Letter to the Hebrews.

We need one another in our journey of faith and Advent reminds us to prepare for Jesus who came to walk with us – always. In his letter on

holiness, Pope Francis says “The common life, whether in the family, the Parish, the religious community or any other, is made up of small everyday things. This was true of the holy community formed by Jesus, Mary and Joseph, which reflected in an exemplary way the beauty of the Trinitarian communion. It was also true of the life that Jesus shared with his disciples and with ordinary people.” The Proclaimer reflects Christian faith and life lived in communion with others and those others are us. I hope you enjoy reading about these lived expressions of our Christian faith.

St. Paul, the Apostle We see in St. Paul the first clear portrait of a Christian missionary. No man before him felt himself responsible for the moral and spiritual welfare of his fellowmen and never before had any man struggled as he did to guide his people from falling into sin. St. Paul was the greatest of all missionaries although he had not read the Gospels, for they had not been written in his time! Unlike all missionaries from the end of the first century onward, he travelled across the world preaching the good news without the written Gospel in his hand! He was able to do this because his knowledge of Proclaimer Magazine: Home Page -8-

the words and deeds of Jesus Christ came not from documents, but from the lips of St. Peter and those who accompanied our Lord during His Ministry.

We know, from the ‘Acts of the Apostles’ and his many letters (called Epistles) that they were written as instruction of the various churches he had founded. Some of these letters were written to settle questions of conduct and behaviour (intended to help people in their transitional stage from paganism to Christianity); others were written to explain St. Paul’s conception of the Christian life.

He had no idea that he was writing for any but the first generation of Christians and he would have been astonished had he known that his letters would be cherished for centuries and eventually incorporated in the New Testament. Letters written by Paul nearly twenty centuries ago still inspire Christians because he dealt with fundamental matters which are as real today as they were in the time of Nero. St. Paul’s letters are, therefore, the earliest Christian writings on record – written before any of the four Gospels.

Paul (or Saul, as was his Hebrew name which he maintained for the first thirty years of his life, but he used Paul when he was in Roman or Greek surroundings) was a Galilean by birth in a village named Gischala in the mountains of Upper Galilee. In the year 4 BC, when Paul would have been two years old, the tranquil life of his parents was brutally disrupted by past happenings of King Herod whose sons, on his death, were hated for his actions. Rome supported the sons and they took prisoners in the area and sold them as slaves. Paul’s parents were unlucky and they found themselves in Tarsus in Turkey.

The Roman interest in Tarsus shows that Roman citizenship was conferred on the leading personalities. This explains Paul’s Roman citizenship because his parents would have been bought by a Roman citizen in Tarsus and would have automatically acquired Roman citizenship when he set them free.

Paul’s letters indicate that he had an excellent education, both religious and secular. He knew the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures very well – which he quotes often. He wrote a vigorous Greek which expressed his emotions as it conveyed his thoughts, and Paul’s emotions were an obvious support for all his teaching.

… From that hour Paul was a changed man …

Completing his education when he was just out of his teens, Paul set out for Jerusalem – probably around AD 15. He was a Pharisee and supported his Jewish faith for almost twenty years. He was totally dedicated to his studies and there appears to be no evidence of him experiencing the public ministry of Jesus or his crucifixion.

Of course, he would have been aware of the happenings in Jesus’ ministry, but why should he waste time seeking out and listening to someone whom he had three good reasons to dismiss – he was from Galilee, he had no qualifications to teach, and he appeared to think that he was the Messiah!

As the numbers in the Jesus movement grew in popularity, the attention of the Pharisees was attracted to it. Any thought of a response, however, was nipped in the bud by Paul’s teacher who said: “Keep away from these men and let them alone. If their plan is of men, it will fail, but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them.” The Pharisees adopted a wait-andsee attitude. Paul did not accept that time would tell. With the gift of going straight to the heart of a problem, Paul saw that it was a winner or loser situation, but no fence on which anyone could sit. Like all Jews, Paul the Pharisee lived in a spiritual world – the present was dominated by the Law of Moses, and the duty Paul took upon himself was proof of his zeal for the Law. Nothing in his letters suggests that Paul had any official standing in his treatment of Christians. It was a personal choice. He was satisfying only himself. Every time the Christians went to the synagogue, they laid themselves open to an abrasive challenge from Paul. On the surface his position was “We are right and they are wrong”, but the framework of this option was his refusal of the possibility of two saviours!

It was the experience of the death of St. Stephen, the first martyr, which sowed the

seeds of Christianity into Paul’s heart (unknowingly to him at the time). It was a few years after the Crucifixion when Stephen was charged with undermining the Law of Moses. After an intense and strongly fought trial, Stephen remained strong and true to the Christian faith. Paul witnessed all of this and was consenting unto his death. He stood there, watching Stephen die through stoning – Stephen knelt down and prayed and as the stones fell about him, Paul heard him cry: “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit”. As the stones came faster, he sank down and repeated with a loud voice the cry of his Master on the Cross: “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.”

All of this was witnessed by Paul who, after the martyrdom of Stephen, continued like a madman creating havoc in the church and entering into every house, and committing the occupants to prison. But he had heard Stephen. He had seen him die. The seed had been sown. Stephen had voiced the New Testament; Paul, although he did not yet know it, had already been chosen to take the New Testament out of the hands of Jewry and to proclaim it in the far places of the world.

It was at this time that Paul left Jerusalem on the road to Damascus which was leading towards Tarsus – which he had chosen to visit. He was part of a caravan of travellers for security reasons at that time. The journey was varied with changes of scenery as they travelled down the Jordan valley towards the Sea of Galilee settled in the cup of the valley. At a point on this road, about twelve miles from Damascus (the low-lying white city shining far off, set on the sand, with domes and minarets lifted above a feathery greenness), somewhere close by, Paul was converted to Christianity.

This art of Paul’s conversion is by the great and respected artist Caravaggio and is a moving accuracy of what happened to Paul.

Suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven; and he fell off his horse to the earth. He heard a voice saying to him: Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Paul asked “Who are thou, Lord?”

The Lord said “I am Jesus whom you persecute”.

As Paul, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do you wish me to do?” The Lord replied “Go into the city, and you will be told what you must do”.

They could hear the voice of our Lord speaking loudly, but they could see no one. When Paul arose from the earth, he opened his eyes but could see nothing and his group led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. He was three days without sight, during which time he neither ate nor drank.

From that hour Paul was a changed man.

Everything he thought and everything he did was by virtue of that moment. He was charged with God. It was from that moment of his conversion that Paul became one of those saints who possessed a “triumphing force” over which circumstances had no power. We then see Paul going out single-handed to organise the Catholic Church and whenever he was questioned regarding his far-reaching

preaching, he answered “Not I, but Christ in me”.

These details of Paul’s conversion lead us to the great fascination and deep trust and appreciation of his writings and widely travelled preaching throughout the area of his life – brought to attention in the map at the beginning of this article which geographically places the extent of Paul’s teaching.

This is what has led us to understand and value the character which Paul’s writings portray for us; writings which we never tire of reading and absorbing by a man led by his changing but genuine and true emotions. Reading his letters brings us confidence and joy which never fail in refreshing us.

He has a marvellous fusion of straight speaking and tenderness – he is forthright and honest in expressing his love and heartfelt praise for God, and nothing is going to separate him from that love, not even hunger, nakedness, suffering and persecution.

For him life is Christ and death a wonderful triumph.

So what’s it like walking a double marathon in two consecutive days?

It was in the winter of 2020 when I met up with Diane, a work colleague from 20 years ago; who we normally exchange Christmas cards with but sadly little else. As we chatted over our coffee Diane told me of her plan to walk a double Marathon in June 2020, I was immediately interested to learn more as I had walked a marathon a couple of years ago and I had been considering attempting two marathons in one day as a personal challenge to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research.

Diane gave me the details, and after looking up ‘Race to the King’ on the internet I was hooked and asked Diane if she would mind if I joined her. It turned out she was already planning to do it with two other friends (Barbara and Lesley) and she was more than happy for me to make up the fourth member of the group.

We were all signed up and received our training plan from the organisation in order to be physically and mentally prepared by June that year. Well, as you will have realised Coronavirus stopped our plans and the Race to the King was postponed until June 2021.

All four of us had the good intentions of doing some training together, as specified in our training plan, but in reality, I only did one 8 mile walk with Diane and didn’t meet the other two members of our team until one week before the actual event when we met for a coffee in Horsham to talk through our preparation for the following weekend. However, all of us were very good at doing loads of training throughout the Spring months increasing not only the amount of walking but also the distance travelled.

In the run up to the big weekend the amount of information being sent from the organisation running the event increased as did the exchange of WhatsApp messages between the four of us. Do this, don’t do that, where to pin your timing chip, when to wear your covid mask, don’t forget your sanitizer, sun cream, wet weather gear, overnight bag, and finally the medical health declaration form the night before to make sure we were all covid safe!

The Race to the King happens each year (I think) and normally goes from Arundel to Winchester but there

was a last-minute change this year and we departed from Goodwood Racecourse instead. We had to do a bit of ‘J’ walking to make sure the distance was still a double marathon and the organisers had done a brilliant job sorting everything out remarkably well. About 2500 people took part in the event over the weekend; some people just did one day (either the Saturday or Sunday), some people ran or walked the whole distance without stopping, and our group (600 of us) were the ‘Weekenders’ who walked the whole distance (53.5 miles) but camped overnight at the basecamp roughly halfway.

I really do have to compliment Threshold Sports who run the event for their brilliant organisation throughout the whole process. All the pre-event information was good and comprehensive; and the organisation over the weekend was superb, the reception, the transportation of the luggage to the basecamp and on to Winchester, the seven pit stops with copious food and drinks, and first aid and numerous toilets, the enthusiastic welcome committees at every stop, the preparation of the basecamp with 600 tents pre-erected for us and a massive marquee for Saturday evening meal and Sunday breakfast, and the finale at Winchester with the awarding of our medals. All of it excellent!

So we set off excitedly on the Saturday morning with Betsy driving me down and all arrived at Goodwood at just about 7.00 am ready for our 7.50 start time. Covid had forced a different starting procedure this year and we all were in ‘waves’ with 5 seconds between groups or individuals. We all made use of the toilets before leaving and then were told we could leave as soon as we were ready and left about 7.30 with a spring in our step. Betsy was at the start line to capture our departure on camera, and then later drove past us in the car, tooting the horn and giving vocal encouragement!

I thought that all three ladies knew each other but in fact Diane was the common denominator between us all, however Lesley does work with Diane. What do three girls and one boy talk about for two days having never met as a group before? Well, I was pleasantly surprised that we were very well matched in terms of outlook and brought a plethora of life experiences to share, so conversation was free-flowing and random.

Never once did I sense any tensions or awkwardness between any of us which made the weekend a delight.

We talked about: our preparation for the double

marathon, our shoes and sock choice, our partners and families - which is always a pleasure, our personal history and what we have done and do in our lives, our noteworthy holidays, the beautiful countryside we walked through, how far we’d walked and how far still to go (about a million times), films and series that we’ve watched recently (the wonders of Netflix during Covid), and the intricacies of ‘wild weeing’ seemed quite high on our conversation agenda! (and luckily was never a problem or an embarrassment). Due to mainly walking on country paths we were usually walking in pairs, and we seemed to rotate freely with each other, without thought or design (unless the girls had a masterplan!) which was lovely. We concluded that a group of four was ideal as; no one was ever left out and you regularly had someone new to talk to. We found it hard to believe that there was hardly 10 minutes of no talking over the whole weekend. We all thought there might be miles of complete silence, due to pain or boredom, thankfully neither of which occurred.

We tried not to think about how our feet and legs were feeling, although we did have one or two little niggles there was nothing that couldn’t

be sorted with a Compeed patch or a change of socks. Day one seemed to whizz along, although it was quite disappointing that our starting point was Goodwood, near Chichester and our basecamp was at Compton Farm, also near Chichester! We joked about walking all day for 22.8 miles and still not getting away from a Chichester postcode! The basecamp was well organised with 600 tents being quite a sight, and the main marquee for meals and socialising (at a distance of course), there were numerous toilet blocks around the field and banks of mobile shower units. We checked into reception at about 4.30pm to get our tents allocated and then collected our luggage which had been ferried via vans from Goodwood. We settled into our tents, removed our footwear and socks, inspected our feet, and then decided to have a shower before the evening rush (if there was going to be one!). The showers were amazing, considering they were all mobile, trailered units they had instant copious hot water that came out at considerable volume and speed, just right for a freshen up after 9 hours of walking.

After a little post shower relaxation, and just as

it started to rain, we decided to go for our meal before everyone else had the same idea. There is a limit to how much entertainment you can have in a one-man tent! There was a short queue going into a double food counter and a choice of four hot meals. Although the portion size was a bit random and dependant on the generosity of individual servers, we thought the food was good and tasty. We had contemplated recirculating for a second portion but actually we all felt well fed after the first round, followed by a couple of cups of tea or coffee.

We settled down to sleep about 8.00pm as the rain had set in for the night. After a bit of reading and contacting loved ones, the camp site soon quietened down and before I knew it, I was waking up at 3.00am. Thinking this was too early, even for me, I went for a quick visit to the toilets with my torch, (on the essential kit list!) before trying to settle again but the excitement of day two approaching was keeping my mind spinning. Then at 4.00am it was like a switch had gone off as tent zips started ‘zipping’ all over the camp site and before we knew it people were talking all around. There was a mum and daughter opposite us who were very funny. They talked as though no one could hear them and were pretty loud. This had been the mum’s first night camping in her life! It seemed as though she had brought as much in her sturdy overnight suitcase as you might need for a week’s holiday. She had a proper 4-inch-thick blow-up mattress, which made my yoga mat seem rather thin!

The daughter was a regular camper, and they made a great couple providing entertainment for everyone nearby with their funny conversation, including which way round they had to sleep because of the slope on the field.

Our 5.00am breakfast was soon eaten, nearly a full English for me, but choice of various options available for others. Bags packed and into the van ready for 6.00am start for day two. However, we paused slightly to let the enthusiastic runners go first, so they didn’t all overtake us as we were setting off. We crossed the start line at about 6.20am with a row of cheer leaders ringing bells and dancing as we triggered the digital timer for our 30.7 miles on Sunday.

We were all togged up in our wet weather gear, as the sky looked very heavy, and the forecast was not good for the morning. It was a very misty start, and we couldn’t see more than about 100 yards, so there was no sightseeing of the beautiful views from the South Downs Way. The first pit-stop was surrounded by mist but there was no rain, so about mid-morning we took off the wet weather jackets and over-trousers and continued on our way into Hampshire. The day was

cloudy which was probably best for long distance walking and the sun popped out for a short while and we all commented on how we couldn’t survive for long in the heat. The pit-stops were more frequent today which made the time go quicker but the sight of Winchester seemed a long time coming!

30.7 miles is a long way in one day, more than I (and I think any of us) had ever walked before.

However, remarkably we continued in good spirits and without notable aches and pains, compared to some other competitors who were clearly struggling and shuffling along with determination to get to the end.

I rang Betsy to inform her of our expected arrival time in Winchester which we had estimated in the morning would be about 6.00pm. At one stage we thought it might be sooner, but the last few miles got longer as the day wore on! The sights of Winchester gave an extra spring in our step and Betsy called to say she was ready and waiting at the finish line. We trawled through the back streets of Winchester and then we could hear the crowds cheering and the music playing and as we turned the final corner Betsy was there to greet us with camera in hand.

Crossing the official finishing line at 6.10pm (nearly 12 hours walking) we were welcomed by the reception committee praising our efforts and clapping us on. Betsy had arranged for Clemmie to join her as she lived in Winchester and is a very good family friend who we have known since she was four years old and had been Hannah, our daughter’s friend through infants’ school and chief bridesmaid at her wedding. It was lovely to see Clemmie who was as excited as we were at finishing our double marathon of 53.5 miles in two days.

Luggage collected and back to the car for the drive along the A272 back to Kirdford, with my first double marathon under my belt! Feet and legs feeling in great working order – all good!

Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem

The modern Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (KHS) which grew out of the Crusaders of medieval times is a lay Order of the Church which was revived by Blessed Pope Pius IV in 1847 to support and maintain the newly established Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Although our role has since grown and developed this still remains our core commitment. We have a specific papal mandate, and we are not therefore just a general charity. I believe it is true to say that without the Order there would be no church in the Holy Land.

Our work takes many forms. In addition to supplying the Patriarchate (similar to a diocese) we assist in building churches, establishing parishes and schools and supporting the Seminary in Bethlehem. We also run a pastoral care programme for seminarian students who come over to England in the summer.

During Covid 19, in response to the Order’s appeal our Lieutenancy sent out £250,000 to the Christians for the basic

necessities of food, medicine and domestic expenses. We try never to lose sight of people’s needs in their daily lives.

Pilgrimages are an important part of our mission, and we normally visit the Holy Land, Israel, Jordan, and Palestine twice a year, when we visit schools and parishes and give them donations. The people always tell us how important these visits are, not just a question of material support but it demonstrates our solidarity with them. In 2020 and again this year pilgrimages had to be cancelled but we organised 2

virtual pilgrimages where we shared in streamed masses from the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and other Holy places, had talks from priests, and Zoom meetings with parishes.

Some of you will have seen members of the Southern Section, wearing our cloaks on formal occasions such as Corpus Christi and Advent Vespers in the Cathedral, Sadly, for the past 18 months all our Section events have had to be cancelled but, with the easing of restrictions, we organised a gathering for Mass and a picnic lunch

followed by the Rosary Walk and Benediction at the church of Our Lady of Consolation at West Grinstead. It was a great day, blessed by warm and sunny weather, apart from a heavy shower just as we started our picnic!

All our work is non political but we must recognise that daily life for Christians in the Holy Land is carried out against a background of considerable instability and insecurity.

Unfortunately, being unable to be physically there with them at present, we can continue to support with donations from members, from crib collections and from the generosity of parishes who support the Order and its mission.

After a long year the museum finally opened its doors again in April which was a delight to all of us. We welcomed a record number of visitors still maintaining safety precautions.

Our live talks started again having been run by Zoom during the closure.

So far for 2021 we have a range of talks from Wellington’s Army to Behind the Scenes at Wimbledon.

Several more talks are scheduled for September, October and November.

Our popular film and supper evening for members came back in August with another planned for November.

Silver Sunday On Sunday 3rd October a very successful

Silver Sunday celebration

afternoon was held in the museum to celebrate Silver Sunday. 92 seniors visited the museum, including some from the North East of England who were part of a coach trip.

There were artefacts on display, delicious refreshments, Arundel in the 60s exhibition and a museum visit! A good fun day and thanks were extended to all our wonderful volunteers who helped make this such a success.

Many years ago when I was a newly qualified doctor I remember being very distressed at the treatment of terminally ill patients. They were often relegated to a bed at the far end of the ward, rarely looked at, and told there is nothing more we can do for you! Thankfully now there are places like St Wilfrid’s Hospice where tailored end of life care is provided, both in the community and at the Hospice, supporting patients living with a terminal illness, their family and friends to make the most of every day.

We are always needing new volunteers. We have 12 retail outlets and most have a paid manager, but the staff are mainly volunteers. We are currently seeking retail volunteers in our new shop in East Street Chichester close to the Cross.; also Selsey where the shop has been expanded recently. We also have volunteers working in our eBay shop processing donation and putting suitable objects on line. Our shops make us over 1 million much needed pounds each year. HOLYWELL – Shrine of St Winefride – ‘The Lourdes of Wales’

Claimed to be the oldest continually visited pilgrimage site in Britain, St Winefride’s Shrine and Well has been visited for more than 1,300 years.

The story begins back in the seventh century when Winefride was assaulted by a chieftain called Caradog who, enraged when she dared defend her honour, slashed at her with his sword,

His possessions, manuscripts and liturgical objects are available for general viewing and visitors may see precious historical items, including pages from the manuscripts of the Apologia and The Dream of Gerontius, the chalice with which Newman celebrated Mass and personal articles such as his spectacles and Rosary beads. Worth Abbey Retreat Centre

The Worth Abbey Retreat Centre – St Bruno’s has now re-opened after 18 months of enforced closure because of the pandemic. We are once again inviting guests who would like to get away on retreat to come and spend some time of spiritual renewal and refreshment. We have 14 mostly en suite twin rooms and 2 family rooms and as we emerge from restrictions, we are limiting the number of guests to no more than 15 per group so that we can maintain a spacious feel to the house.

Our current programme includes each month a ‘Finding Stillness’ retreat. The purpose of this retreat is to do “what it says on the tin” and explore Psalm 45: “Be Still and know that I am God”, how to find that stillness within ourselves and how to bring it to fruition in our lives. Obviously this is a life-long task but this retreat offers a good opportunity to connect or to reconnect with this concept.

The children were asked for donations of nonperishable foods such as pasta, tins of food and dry food packets.

The order is one of five orders of knighthood of the Holy See, bestowed in recognition of personal service to the Holy See and to the Catholic Church.

Those present at the Friends’ Summer Vespers were intrigued by a cryptic note in the order of service – “Investiture” – with no further explanation. All became clear as Bishop Richard summoned Patrick to the front, to receive his honour.

Patrick was educated by the Jesuits at Beaumont College and at Caius College, Cambridge. In addition to a distinguished legal career, he has been involved in numerous charitable activities, to all of which, as Bishop Richard reminded us, he has brought true Gospel values.

Despite Patrick’s protestations, anyone aware of his involvement nationally with the HCPT Lourdes pilgrimages, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, the Order of St John, and other causes, and locally as a trustee of the Diocese and of course his untiring work for the Friends of Arundel Cathedral, will feel this recognition richly deserved.

We congratulate Patrick most warmly and thank him for his unstinting loyalty to this Cathedral.

On the walls outside a house overlooking the lake, the following words from a speech by a famous person are displayed: ‘I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone, if possible, Jew, Gentile, black men, white.

We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. …

In the seventeenth chapter of St Luke, it is written that the kingdom of God is within man, not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power. … The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.’

The person who wrote these words came from a very poor background. He lived with his mother and older brother. Their father had abandoned them. They lived in extreme poverty, frequently having no money for food and constantly moving from one squalid rented room in the suburbs of London to another. His mother was forced to enter a workhouse on more than one occasion, taking her sons with her. But the boys had many talents and were keen to use them.

Years later, when the youngest son had become famous, he travelled the world, meeting many people from all walks of life, including important politicians and scientists. He spent some time in America. However, due to the misinterpretation of some of his ideas, he was not allowed a visa to re-enter and live in the United States.

Eventually, he settled in Switzerland. On the shores of Lake Geneva, on the outskirts of a town called Vevey, stands an imposing house, with gardens overlooking the lake and mountains. For the last twenty-five years of his life, the man lived there with his wife and children.

She didn’t offer you a cheek on which to plant a cool kiss, oh no, she enveloped you in a warm, bear-like hug. I can still feel the warmth of her embrace, contrasting with the stiffness of her nun’s wimple.

In the second week Martin Hall, who chairs the parish finance committee, talked about Planned Giving and Stewardship and referred parishioners to the appeal leaflet which showed why the parish needs financial help to cover all its running costs. The parish relies on offertory donations. Over the last five years these have been in decline with a sharp fall in 2020 due mainly to Covid-19. The average donation per person per week in 2019 was £2.50 which seems low when compared with the cost of a cup of coffee in the High Street. He explained the benefits to the parish of Gift Aid and encouraged all parishioners who pay tax to take advantage of this, preferably by setting up a standing order from their bank account.
