Finally, Not Vital demonstrates once more that art is capable of producing an immediate effect by means of a sculpture that represents the potential for danger: “Unpleasant Object” is a polished, high-gloss work made of stainless steel that

is reminiscent of a Sputnik in shape. From its spherical body, a tree-like antenna grows vertically upward, from which sharply pointed spikes of varying lengths jut out, of the type one may find on the walls of gated communities (to discourage trespassers). “The object is attractive and repellent at the same time”, says the artist. And as always with Vital, this sculpture also constitutes an amalgamation of various semantic levels that find a new form that still faintly reminds one of their origins, but through its strange beauty directs our senses towards the new and unknown.

“Von Agadez nach Aladab nach Agadez”

Als mir eines Spätoktobernachmittags nichts besseres einfiel, als wieder einmal den Sonnenuntergang zu betrachten und ich in Richtung Norden flipfloppte, den Kouri Fluss überquerte, in dem ich seit 10 Jahren keinen Tropfen Wasser gesehen hatte, traf ich Oukoulla, der aus Azel, d. h. Zweig, kam. Er ist Tuareg, blau und Schmied, hat dynamitglänzende, von Sand aufgeriebene wässrige Augen und trägt immer ein paar Messer mit sich, weil er eben Schmied ist. Oukoulla gehört, wie die Schmiede in den meisten afrikanischen Stämmen, zur Unterschicht, zur unteren Kaste, weil er mit dem Feuer umzugehen weiss. Er kann, als Schmied, seiner Zunge freien Lauf lassen und muss nicht den strengen, stolzen Regeln der anderen Tuareg folgen. Darum ist es immer lustig mit Oukulla zu sprechen, d.h. wenn er überhaupt spricht. Er war in Azel, wahrscheinlich bei einem Fest, um ein paar Schafen den Hals durchzuschneiden.

Nachdem er ein paar religiöse Wörter laut ausgesprochen hat, bewegt er sein scharfes, dünnes Messer so elegant und graziös, als würde er den Bogen über den Hals einer Geige führen.

Mit allem ist er sparsam und sitzt still vor dir wie eine blaue Skulptur. Ich muss auch sparsam mit meinen Fragen sein, obwohl ich soviel mehr aus diesen Augen trinken möchte. Meistens fragt er das gleiche, als würde er dich nichts fragen. “Et la fatigue?” Wie soll es wohl mit der Müdigkeit stehen, wenn ich schon vor Wochen hergereist bin. “Ça va?” Er schaut dich, nein er schaut dich gar nicht an, sondern durch dich hindurch, als wärst du ein Stück Glas. Die nassen, intensiven Augen lachen und weinen zugleich. Gleichzeitig wurde ich in eine Tiefe gerissen, der ich nicht zu entrinnen wusste, als wär ich high. Wir sprachen über Geschäfte, wie man das eben unter Männern auch in New York tut, und es wurde Nacht.

Die Sonne ging so rasch unter, wie Usain Bolt über die Laufpiste rennt. Der Schalter wurde umgedreht. Nacht. Diese Sonnenuntergänge in der Wüste sind so intensiv wie eine himmlische Masturbation, bei der man wieder einmal der Aussenseiter ist. Oukoulla, “culla” heisst auf Romanisch Kugel und er trug eine Silberkugel an seinem Ring. Ein “bijou tuareg“, das ich gar nicht beschreiben will. Nie gesehen. Ich fragte ihn nach einer halben Stunde, ob er den Ring angefertigt habe, vor allem diese perfekte Kugel. Er sagte ja. Und wir dachten, wer sonst. Unterdessen waren mehr Sterne am Himmel als Himmel. Der Sternenhimmel war ein Sandkörnermeer auf dem wir immer noch segelten.

Oukoulla unbewegt wie ein Lapislazuli. Dieser Himmel ist eine Verschwendung der Natur über die Wüste, die selbst keine kennt. Ich fragte Oukoulla, ob er eine Silberkugel schmieden könne, die die Grösse einer Melone habe. “Pas de problème” sagte er, so stolz, als würden seine schöne Zähne ausbrechen. Nie gemacht und kein Problem. Das ist ein toller Freund, dachte ich und er dachte das gleiche. Das Überleben lässt keine Zweifel aufkommen.

(Bei uns im Westen erscheint das Wort “Problem” entweder im ersten oder spätestens im dritten Satz, wenn man jemandem einen Auftrag gibt.) Ich habe von meinen Tuareg Freunden gelernt, sparsam mit diesem Wort umzugehen.

Im Tempo seiner Antwort musste ich wissen, womit ich diese Kugeln füllen wollte, um daraus eine Skulptur zu machen.

Weder Sterne noch Sand noch Oukoulla oder ich konnten hinein. Sein Kamel Koura, das 12 Meter enfernt, unbewegt wie sein Meister, am Boden lag, weder Sterne noch Himmel betrachtend und wie eine alte Säge mit seinen unschönen Zähnen knirschend und vielleicht lustvoll an andere Kamele denkend, so dass ich sagte “ein Kamel muss hinein”.

“Pas de problème” sagte Oukoulla. “Du musst aber 12 Kugeln in Silber anfertigen, damit das ganze von der Sonne getrocknete Tier hinein passt”. Ein leises Lächeln entglitt seinen Lippen. “Comme ils sont bizarres ces blancs”, musste er wieder einmal gedacht haben. “Jojo” sagte er auf Tamaschek, was auf Schwyzerdütsch dasselbe bedeutet.

Beim Ausführen der Skulptur wurden keine Fragen mehr gestellt, alle Schmiede wussten, was hinein kommt. Wären die Kugeln aber leer geblieben, hätte es 1000 Fragen ohne eine gültige Antwort gegeben. In unserer Fülle können wir besser mit der Leere umgehen als ein Wüstenmensch.

Es sind nicht die täglichen Wanderungen der Stämme, wenn sie ausziehen, etwas Weidegrass zu suchen, die das wahre Leben der Wüste ausmachen. Das wahre Leben ist eben jenes Spiel, so sagt Saint-Exupéry, das daneben gespielt wird.
