Welcome to May,

Our 2019 summer schedule is now in full swing. This season we are opearting to 42 scheduled destinations in Europe and North Africa. We have increased frequencies to Paris Charles De Gaulle, Hamburg, Kiev, London Heathrow, Lyon, Munich, Tunis and after an absence of 12 years, in September we shall be resuming flights to Egypt’s capital, Cairo. For the first time we will also offer seasonal scheduled services to/from Warsaw, Tbilisi and Ibiza.

For me the month of May has always been about the height of spring. It is the birth of fresh beginnings and opportunities. My birthday is in May so it is also a month of milestones. May is an all-round positive month. Gone are the April showers to be replaced with darling buds. May is the month they sing about in songs - mainly because it an easy month to rhyme with but still... Spring is in full flurry, sunshine is upon us and life is a wonderful thing indeed.

During the month of May, the Maltese Islands boast of an impressive programme of varied cultural events and outdoor activities. Music lovers are literally spoilt for choice with an interesting line-up of music festivals including Earth Garden and classical recitals taking place both in Malta and Gozo. Step into Malta’s medieval period and experience re-enactments of historical battles and lost traditions during the Medieval Mdina Festival or enjoy a Maltese pyrotechnic experience during the Mechanised Ground Fireworks Festival taking place at the historic Floriana Granaries. If you are planning to visit our sister island of Gozo, make sure not to miss the Gozo Spring Fair which is a celebration of artisan products and local food specialties. For sport enthusiasts, a major attraction during this month is the annual event of the Gozo Xterra trail run which is a unique 50km trail running event in the enchanting rural setting of this Mediterranean island.

Alas, this issue is also tinged with a sense of personal sadness for me as it will be my last. However, I place the reigns in the capable hands of Dayna Clarke, our subeditor who will no doubt take the magazine to new heights. (Pun very much intended). May is a big month for Malta with many cultural events and activities to explore from history to music and much, much more. You can find out more about many of these events in our events section. This issue is filled with culture both of the pop variety thanks to our Eurovision feature and the more artistic as we explore the art of the Valletta Contemporary. We also head ‘off the beaten track’ as we visit the picturesque coastal area of Fomm ir-Riħ and we explore the southern village of Qrendi in our ‘six sights’ feature.

For more information about Air Malta and our flight schedules please visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/ AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive great offers directly in your inbox.

Elsewhere in the issue we have a recipe from renowned chef Daniel Grech and an interview with Maltese artist Ray Piscopo while our main destination this month being the sister island of Gozo which is well-deserving of its ‘most rewarding extra mile’ tagline.

At Air Malta we are customer-driven and are always keen to know what we could do better to improve your Air Malta flight experience. Visit www.airmalta.com/wearelistening to answer a few short questions about your flight with us and you can win one of 10 free return Air Malta flights we are offering every month. It really only takes two minutes!

It is a packed May edition so settle down and enjoy the flight. I wish you happy reading and a happy May.

Thank you for choosing Air Malta. We hope to see you on board another one of our flights as our welcomed guest soon.

Safe travels.

MALTA'S SISTER ISLAND GOZO REALLY IS A 'MUST-SEE' ON A VISIT TO MALTA. BUT IT IS THE JOURNEY TO GOZO, ON THE GOZO CHANNEL CROSSING WHERE THE FUN REALLY BEGINS.

WORDS HELEN RAINE

GETTING TO GOZO THIS MONTH, WE EXPLORE THE GOZO CHANNEL CROSSING. QUINTESSENTIALLY MALTESE, THE CROSSING IS A DESTINATION UNTO ITSELF WITH A HISTORY OF ITS OWN. THE CHANNEL JOINS THE MAIN MALTESE ISLANDS OF MALTA AND GOZO AND PLAYS A VITAL PART OF THE CULTURE, LIFE AND ECONOMY OF THE ISLAND.

The Gozo Ferry is as big a part of Maltese life as pastizzi and festas.

Still, it took a while before the first records of an official ferry

Gleneagles Bar. The existing breakwater wasn’t built until 1841. It was altered and improved numerous times to provide additional shelter to the harbour. AN INTRIGUING HISTORY The Gleneagles Bar gets its name from the first formal ferry service introduced to the islands. Gleneagles first sailed in 1884 out of the shipbuilding port of Aberdeen in Scotland. O.F. Gollcher & Sons Ltd bought her in 1885 for passenger and official mail sailings. It cost 8p to sail her one way, and for a few years, passengers paid an additional 1p when they landed in Gozo – that surcharge went to paying for a Mass to pray for safe arrival, so it wasn’t to be missed, especially in winter! The Gleneagles also went to Sicily regularly as the mail boat, remaining in operation until the outbreak of World War I. During World War I, she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and went to war. The boat survived, and was returned to Gollcher at the end of the hostilities; he sold her in 1919. Her name changed four times after that before she was finally wrecked in the mid 1930s at Alexandria in Egypt. Another famous ferry was The Royal Lady, owned by the Gozo Mail Service Company. She went into service just before World War II but was sunk by German bombers the same year at Mġarr in a surprise attack (her sister ship the SS Franco was also hit but suffered less damage, continuing in service until after the war.)

GOZO SCORES A HAT-TRICK AT INTERNATIONAL TOURISM FAIR IN BERLIN They say that the best things come in threes and that must be true because for the 3rd consecutive year, Gozo has won the prize in the Best Communities and Culture category; taking home the trophy at the 2019 prestigious ITB tourism fair held in Berlin, Germany. The ITB is the world’s leading travel and tourism fair for professionals working in the industry. The prize was awarded to Gozo by Green Destinations, an international organisation that promotes sustainable tourism. This particular category focuses on “global leadership in protecting culture and tradition, involving local communities, and avoiding over-tourism”. For a small island, Gozo’s calendar is always brimming with an eclectic mix of arts, entertainment and cultural activities which happen throughout the year, not just during the high tourist season. Our island has always stayed true to its traditional culture and heritage, which in turn is appreciated by tourists who flock to Gozo to witness a snapshot of rich island life whilst appreciating the sheer beauty of the island’s dramatic landscape. Over the past few months, locals and tourists have enjoyed Gozo’s Christmas festivities, Valentine series, Carnival celebrations, the Gaulitana Festival of Music, and Easter events. The Victoria Arts Festival is just around the corner and so are the traditional village feasts, which are an important part of Gozo’s calendar of events. The list of cultural activities is endless, Gozo truly is an amazing small island with a pulsating, cultural heartbeat. The Minister for Gozo, Justyne Caruana said she was proud of Gozo scooping a third award on the international trade stage. She said that this fantastic prize was earned by all our islanders, because of their dedication throughout the year in organising and supporting many of Gozo’s events. Every month Gozo hosts a variety of arts, entertainment and cultural events enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you want family fun, adrenaline-fueled action, high art, or popular entertainment, our small island really does have it all and now we have the trophies to prove it.

MALTA: AN INVESTMENT LOCATION FOR THE FUTURE Considered one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, many are still amazed to discover the plethora of benefits associated with investing and living in Malta.

CITIZENSHIP-BY-INVESTMENT GOLD STANDARD Developed by the Government of Malta in partnership with Henley & Partners, the Malta Individual Investor Program (MIIP) is considered the most successful and credible citizenship program in the world. The minimum capital contribution for a single applicant is approximately EUR 1 million, which consists of a donation to the country’s development fund, a real estate purchase or rental, and an investment in government-approved financial instruments.

Situated just off the European coast beneath Sicily, the small island of Malta has established itself as a leading financial centre, offering foreign investors stability, security, and innovation. The Mediterranean island has experienced above-average economic growth in recent years, as investors and travellers alike tap into the island nation’s enormous potential. During the first half of 2018, Malta had the fastest growing economy in the Eurozone, boasting an economic growth rate of more than 5%. Considering this exponential growth and Malta’s incredible lifestyle benefits, an increasing number of people are looking to make greater investments in the island. Malta’s acclaimed citizenship-by-investment program offers investors the opportunity to obtain citizenship in exchange for a substantial economic contribution to the country and forge genuine links with the island.

The MIIP has set the industry benchmark in terms of application processing, applying the world’s strictest due diligence standards and vetting of applicants. Each applicant and their included family members have to pass a strict four-tier due diligence process to ensure that all individuals entering Malta through citizenship-by-investment have no association with any criminal activities or form of corruption.

MEDITERRANEAN LIFESTYLE Malta is often referred to as an open-air museum and has a history that dates to 5,000 BCE — the island’s skyline is dominated by 16th-century architecture. The country is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among them, its capital, Valletta, donned the illustrious crown of ‘European Capital of Culture’ in 2018.

The Maltese government understands that a healthy private sector and an overall pro-investment climate contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this extent, Malta Enterprise was created with an objective to support private businesses operating in the country, and its services are priceless to new investors entering the market. It provides assistance in data analysis, helps with identifying potential partners and clients, and guides investors through the legal system.

Along with its rich history, Malta offers 300 days of sunshine, seasculpted shores, and azure waters. The island’s lifestyle is modern and welcoming, and the influences of its location are evident in local food. Dishes feature a mix of Mediterranean cuisine with strong influences from Italy, created from fresh ingredients from the local land and sea. A SECURE HAVEN FOR YOUR FAMILY An EU member since 2004, Malta provides its residents with the same benefits afforded to European citizens, such as access to the world’s best educational and medical facilities and security under the protection of the region’s strong legal system. Malta is considered one of the safest countries in terms of natural disasters and crime. According to the 2018 edition of the World Risk Report, the island nation ranks as the second safest in the world behind Qatar on the 172-nation ranking of disaster risks. The crime rate on the island is also almost non-existent.

FUTURE-FACING INVESTMENT DESTINATION In 2018, Malta became the first country in the world to establish a regulatory framework for blockchain technology. The island nation has also long been a front runner in the iGaming and fintech industries.

The country has earned a reputation for being highly familyoriented — many of its public places and establishments are welcoming of and cater to children. Malta has excellent local and international public and private education, with all schools teaching in English. The standard of health care in Malta is among the highest in the world, with a wide network of clinics and the renowned private Saint James Hospital servicing residents.

The country’s online gaming industry has shown impressive growth over the past few years, supporting local employment and bolstering revenue for the island. The sector accounts for a substantial part of Malta’s economy, contributing over 12% of the country’s overall GDP.

THRIVING REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY Malta’s real estate market has shown outstanding resilience during the 2008 global recession and continues to grow in sales. The purchase of real estate on the island archipelago is at an alltime high. During the first half of 2018, property prices in Malta increased more than any other country in the world.

THE GLOBAL LEADER IN INVESTMENT MIGRATION Henley & Partners is the global leader in residence and citizenship planning. Our highly qualified professionals work together as one team in over 30 offices worldwide. With a local office in Malta, our experienced global team is best-placed to guide you through your citizenship-by-investment journey.

The increasing number of buyers looking to purchase real estate in Malta is driven by various factors, including the opening of branches of some of the world’s most influential financial institutions, online businesses, and reinsurance companies. Malta offers an abundance of property options, including apartments, maisonettes, ‘houses of character’, palazzos, villas, and bungalows.

The firm also runs a leading government advisory practice that has raised more than USD 8 billion in foreign direct investment. Trusted by governments, the firm has been involved in strategic consulting and in the design, setup, and operation of the world’s most successful residence and citizenship programs.

AN ATTRACTIVE PLACE FOR BUSINESS A flexible and highly trained multilingual workforce is one of Malta’s principal assets and helps to ensure the country’s competitive edge through high-quality production at costs that are highly competitive in relation to the rest of Europe. Investors operating in Malta also benefit from easy access to European and Middle Eastern markets and the EU’s free trade agreements. Further bolstering Malta’s business appeal is its membership to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, and the International Labour Organization.

JULINU’S RADIOACTIVE RAVIOLI

MALTA FASHION WEEK

Teatru Manoel, Valletta

2019 marks the 21st edition of the Malta Fashion Awards and the 9th edition of Malta Fashion Week, two events presented in the heart of Valletta at Pjazza Tritoni and Fort St Elmo respectively. During this week, the Maltese capital city becomes a platform for unveiling Malta’s top-shelf talent and all that the local fashion industry has to offer the international scene.

Known for his meticulously-executed visual ideas, Julinu’s upcoming exhibition is a playfully witty and thought-provoking collection of 17 realistically-executed oil paintings. The collection combines traditional art techniques with Julinu’s characteristically contemporary outlook on familiar notions, thus presenting a strangely familiar alternative universe. Entrance is free.

KINNIE

Simonds Farsons Cisk plc is synonymous with a beer brewing tradition rooted in quality. At the base of this tradition are long-established skills of selecting nature’s best ingredients coupled with the expertise of skilled and dedicated brewers that ensure that a high standard of quality is maintained at every step in the brewing process. Over the years, this dedication has contributed to creating awardwinning brews that so many have grown to appreciate. Cisk Lager, launched in 1929, is a golden-coloured, bottom fermented lager with a distinctive and well-balanced character with an alcohol content of 4.2%. The range also includes Cisk Export – a smooth, well-balanced and exceptional beer with a 5% alcohol content, Cisk Excel – a low carbohydrate beer, Cisk Chill – flavoured beer available in three flavours, Cisk Pilsner – a premium pilsner with an alcohol content of 5.5% and Cisk Strong – an outstanding extra-strong premium lager with a 9% alcohol content.

Kinnie, Malta’s own favourite soft drink, is a unique tasting bitter sweet soft drink with orange flavouring and aromatic herbs. Kinnie is best enjoyed ‘neat’, with a slice of orange and lots of ice. Highly refreshing, it is also an excellent mixer. These distinctive characteristics have made Kinnie a Mediterranean classic since 1952, loved by the local population and tourists. Over the years, in keeping with evolving trends in lifestyles and health awareness, a zero-calorie version, Diet Kinnie, was introduced, as well as Kinnie Zest – a sugar-free variant with an intense orange flavour. In the Fintech space, online gaming operators are reaping the benefits of this model, as are more established businesses such as hotel or restaurant chains, supermarkets/retail networks or car parks, to mention a few. 2019 is also very much the year that Artificial Intelligence (AI) takes centre stage in Malta, with the government having launched a comprehensive Fintech vision aimed at promoting Malta as a hub for innovative technology. balance between having hearty ‘Maltese’ style meals and also keeping in touch with what the locals enjoy eating. IS IT DIFFICULT TO SOURCE ANY PARTICULAR INGREDIENTS? A lot of the ingredients required are very easily found locally. We have a number of suppliers that can provide us with some of the best Italian and Mediterranean quality ingredients we can think of. It is only the specific Maltese ingredients that prove more difficult to get hold of, although still possible. In fact, we have now also started exploring the possibility of serving the Maltese traditional pastizzi. Sourced directly from Malta. ARE THERE ANY BIG DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MALTESE AND BRITISH FOOD? There is a big difference in the food culture and although the locals love our food, one must be careful what to offer as what may be a traditional favourite in one country may not go down too well in another. Our sweet ricotta kannoli and homemade ravioli have been a big hit so far though. YOU HAVE LIVED AWAY FROM MALTA FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW. HOW DOES IT FEEL WHEN YOU COME BACK? I am very happy living in Devon at the moment but Malta will always remain my home and my country. Being in Malta on holiday is a strange feeling for me. Strange in a good way. I enjoy experiencing the culture through the lens of a visitor and therefore get to appreciate it more. Malta is stunning. WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST FROM MALTA AND ARE THERE ANY ASPECTS OF MALTESE LIFE OR CULTURE THAT FOREIGNERS JUST DON’T ‘GET’? A couple of things I can think of are the build-up to the village festa, the church bells, the street lights and the fireworks. Oh yes, a few of my friends will giggle at this, the word ‘mela’ and how we use it in a thousand different ways. FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU GET BACK TO MALTA? Malta is a tiny island but one will need more than a short holiday to make the most of it and be able to say that they have experienced it. The Megalithic temple of Ħaġar Qim stands on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfla. The temple dates back to 3600-3200 BC. The facade, with its trilithon entrance, has been restored and gives an idea of what it may once have looked like.

Mnajdra is a temple complex that’s about a 700m walk downhill from Ħaġar Qim. It was built around the same time and consists of three temples. The lowest temple is astronomically aligned, and archaeologists believe that it was most likely used as an astronomical observation or calendrical site.

San Mattew tal-Maqluba is a Roman Catholic church located in the centre of Qrendi. The church’s main attraction is a painting by a famous Baroque artist- Mattia Preti. It depicts the martyrdom of St Matthew. It can be found behind the main altar and dates back to 1688.

This watchtower was built in 1659 by the Order of St John. It offered protection against invaders from the south then and now provides a majestic view of the island of Filfla which is about 5 km away. The tower was restored by Heritage Malta and is part of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park.

This palace built in 1740 has a simple architecture and was made to offer its occupants protection from potential sea raiders who might’ve landed in Qrendi. The palace has a beautiful garden which was used by The King’s Own Malta Regiment- a regiment of local Maltese that valiantly protected the shores of Malta.

This hidden gem is a coastline that is full of rock formations, beautiful luminescent blue water and a plethora of flora and fauna. You can also get a beautiful view of the Island of Filfla from here. It is recommended that you stay within the green markings on the ground.

INTO THE DEEP: THE MALTA AIRPORT FOUNDATION SUPPORTS THE EXCAVATION OF A PHOENICIAN SHIPWRECK A team of highly technical divers hailing from all corners of the world, and led by a local maritime archaeologist, have been defying the depth and overcoming these challenges to explore the site, while being mindful of its delicate nature, in the hope of revealing new information about early Phoenician trade practices. Annual dives have led the underwater team to, slowly but surely, unearth mixed cargo on board the partly eroded ship, which includes Tyrrhenian amphorae, urns and Gozo ceramics. The first of its kind to be discovered intact, this cargo reinforces the argument that the Maltese Islands were indeed an important part of the Phoenician maritime and trade network. Some of the artefacts retrieved were exhibited at the Gozo Museum of

To put this into perspective, most diveable shipwrecks lie at around 50m below sea level or in even shallower waters.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
