It may not always be obvious driving by an industrial park or a factory, but there are thousands of companies in southeastern Wisconsin making products we use every day. The region is home to major brands like Milwaukee Tool and InSinkErator, but also smaller companies that are hiring, too. Here are just a handful of the region’s manufacturers and some of their recent job openings.

This position coordinates the development of private label packaging graphics across internal departments and with clients, including quotes, invoices and purchase orders. Also reviews artwork for spelling, grammar and non-regulatory graphics to mitigate risks. Needs organized and methodical approach to problem solving in often time-sensitive and tight-deadline situation.

This position makes sure the proper quality techniques are used, gathers and analyzes data on quality audits, and helps implement improvements to quality systems. Job requires at least one year of experience with food industry quality assurance.

PALERMO VILLA : Drawing on its founder’s Italian roots and family recipes, Palermo’s makes several brands of pizza, including Primo Thin, King Cheese, Screamin’ Sicilian, Urban Pie Pizza Co. and Connie’s Pizza from its facility in Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley. Its job descriptions also note that job perks include 20 free pizzas per month.

InSinkErator: There is a good chance the garbage disposal in your kitchen was made by InSinkErator, but the company also makes instant hot water dispenses and commercial equipment. Its headquarters are in Mount Pleasant, and the company has invested millions in its Racine manufacturing facility.

HellermannTyton North America: From cars to data centers to solar panels, many of the products HellermannTyton makes at its Milwaukee facilities may be small, but they are key to keeping wires and cables organized. The products are used for bundling, securing, identifying, protecting and installing wires.

GARBAGE DISPOSALS

Milwaukee Tool: Brookfield-based Milwaukee Tool makes power tools used by professionals in construction and other industries with much of the design work done by teams in Brookfield, Menomonee Falls and Milwaukee. The company also recently opened a manufacturing facility in West Bend to make a line of hand tools and its subsidiary Empire Level has a factory in Mukwonago.

AUTOMATION ENGINEER TECHNICIAN: Supports manufacturing equipment and employees in setting up, maintaining and troubleshooting automated assembly machines. Requires associate degree or equivalent apprenticeship, two years of manufacturing experience, knowledge of hand tools and basic fabricating machines and prioritization skills.

PROCESSING TECHNICIAN: A processing technician installs molds in injection molding machines and sets up other related equipment. The role also requires making adjustments and troubleshooting during production runs to make sure specifications are met. Three years of experience in plastics or injection molding are preferred, but the company will train those with mechanical aptitude. A complete set of personal hand tools and the ability to work overtime is also required.

OPERATOR: Operates and inspects all primary machines and auxiliary equipment and provides instruction and training to new hires. Position requires a high school diploma, one year of previous manufacturing experience, attention to detail and ability to read and understand work instructions.

AUTOMATION ASSEMBLY TECHNICIAN: This role builds, starts and debugs electro/mechanical and pneumatic machines for the company’s internally designed automation, assembly machines and robotic tooling. Also responsible for developing training plans for production personnel and the automation department. Technical degree and two years of experience preferred, or five years of experience with a high school diploma.

AUTOMATION TECHNICIAN: Responsible for set up and operation of automated manufacturing systems, including monitoring, adjusting and repairing equipment to produce quality parts. Works independently and needs to troubleshoot and resolve issues. Five years of experience with mechanical or electrical equipment plus some training and understanding of PLCs and robotics.

JOBS AT HELLERMANNTYTON NORTH AMERICA

ASSEMBLER: Pay starting at $17.84 per hour with $1 shift premium and opportunity to reach $23 per hour with regular raises. On-the-job training in safety and meeting production goals. Assembles products, loads conveyers, stocks parts, and handles materials as required. Rotates among tasks to learn entire assembly process.

MACHINE OPERATOR: Loads, inspects and processes parts from machining centers following work instructions, visual aids and quality alters. Ensures parts meet manufacturing requirements. May make small adjustments and changes to maintain process stability. Requires problem solving, basic math and computer skills, and ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Pay starts at $18.90 per hour, plus shift premiums.

TOOL & DIE MAKER STAMPING: Supports toolmaking in the development, construction, calibration and repair of tooling, dies, fixtures and other equipment. Works with maintenance to plan proper repairs. Responsible for supplying sketches to engineering. Must be able to operate all toolroom machines and able to independently produce tooling. Requires journeyman card or eight years of experience. Pays $33.57 per hour, plus shift premiums.

PACKAGING MECHANIC: The packaging mechanic monitors equipment for proper operation and makes adjustments to optimize performance. The job is also responsible for diagnosing breakdowns and operational issues, making repairs as necessary. An associate degree in robotics, industrial maintenance or technology is a plus, and three years of experience related to electronical repairs, programmable logic controls and wiring in an industrial setting is required.

Strattec: Whether it’s General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Hyundai or Kia, Milwaukee-based Strattec makes vehicle access products – think key fobs, start buttons, tailgates and sliding doors – for some of the world’s biggest car companies.

PACKAGING MACHINE OPERATOR: The machine operator could operate a range of different machines, including tanks, vats, boilers and kettles. This position resolves changes in production flow, checks packages, makes sure machines are supplied with the right material and reports food safety issues. The job requires a high school diploma and three years of manufacturing or packaging experience.

Haribo: For the past several years Haribo has been building a brand-new manufacturing plant in Pleasant Prairie. The company is known for its Goldbears but also makes numerous other candies.

ENGINEERING TEST LAB TECHNICIAN: Performs engineering evaluation, design validation and process verification testing. Position requires an understanding of the fundamentals of machine operation, electronics, pneumatics and print reading. Generates test reports using photos and spreadsheets, documents new testing procedures, assists with 3D printing workload and helps with troubleshooting nonconforming products. Requires high school diploma and two years of related experience or training.

FINAL OPERATIONS ASSEMBLER: This position at Husco’s Whitewater facility starts at $17 per hour with shift premiums and flexible hours available. The job involves assembling hydraulic components using manual and automated equipment, performing self-inspection, data entry and basic material handling.

Many companies employ people to coordinate shipping and receiving products and materials. These people don’t work directly on products but are critical to keeping a business moving.

BREAKING DOWN THE SUPPLY CHAIN

The products we use every day start as raw materials like metal, plastic resins, food commodities or fabrics.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been shortages of one product after another. From toilet paper to new trucks, these shortages were often caused by supply chain issues. Dozens of companies often contribute to making products available for us to buy at a store or order online. Issues at any one of them, or the transportation between them, can disrupt product availability. These issues create plenty of job opportunities. Companies employ people in supply chain management jobs to make sure they have the right materials available at the right time to make the products that consumers want. They also need employees to figure out the best and most efficient way to ship those products to stores and consumers.

The need for people working in supply chain management is growing as companies look to save money moving products as efficiently as possible. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates supply chain jobs in Wisconsin will grow 32% by 2030, with median salaries around $62,870. Four-year and two-year schools including Marquette University and Waukesha County Technical College have programs in supply chain management.

All of the parts and components made by factories eventually come together for final assembly and distribution.

Once products are finished, they are shipped to retailers or warehouses for distribution.

When consumers finally buy products, it is the end of a complex process that benefits from companies knowing what to make and how to ship it.

Most manufacturers don’t actually make the final product we see. Instead, many companies specialize in making components or parts that go into a final product.

Each method of transportation has benefits and drawbacks. An airplane may be faster, but costs more. A train may be cheaper, but a truck can take the product to a specific destination.

RENOVATING THE MILWAUKEE ATHLETIC CLUB

It took three years and $62 million, but the Milwaukee Athletic Club in downtown Milwaukee has a completely new look after undergoing a massive renovation project. The club’s 100-plus year-old building at 758 N. Broadway had become highly inefficient over the years and the mechanical systems serving its 13 stories were out of date. However, the project was about more than updating the heating and air conditioning. Initially, the plan was to turn the building’s middle five floors into a 95-room hotel, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced a change of plans and eight of the floors were turned into 54 apartments. Elsewhere in the building, there are ballrooms with breathtaking chandeliers, restored murals from 1948, top-notch athletic and fitness facilities, and a rooftop bar and terrace.

CONTRACTORS a deadline related to the project’s financing, crews from Milwaukee-based construction firm C.G. Schmidt had to work double and weekend shifts to get the job done. The firm does a lot of work on school projects where work is done over the summer, so it was used to working on tight timelines. Still, to get a 16-month project done in 12 months required four full-time construction managers instead of the normal two. Around 350 construction workers contributed to the project, including 70 from C.G. Schmidt and another 200 to 300 tradesmen and women.

The city and state are pouring $456 million into the project, which leaders say will help make Milwau kee more attractive to large con ventions and tourists. Once com plete, the new convention center is projected to attract an additional 100,000 out-of-state visitors an nually and support 2,300 full-time equivalent jobs throughout the state of Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin Center District.

While MATC, GPS and Gateway deal heavily with construction trades and manufactur ing, apprenticeships are picking up steam in other fields as well.

“Apprenticeship is asked about more of ten than it used to be, out of necessi ty. What’s happened now, because of the lack of employees, businesses are venturing into other ways,” he said.

It’s not just lack of employees, Stuart added. The high turnover rate in some jobs means busi nesses need a steady stream of workers in the pipeline.

Wisconsin created the first state registered apprenticeship system in 1911, and in 1937, Congress enacted the National Apprenticeship Act.

Again, the labor shortage is driving that en gine, they said, as employers and business es seek new avenues to find workers.

He was exploring the idea of being a physical therapist, but realized it would take years and lots of debt. He knew he’d have to maintain a high grade point average and still risk not being accepted into a program.

That decision lead him on a path that includ ed classes at Milwaukee Area Technical Col lege and a grocery store job with the poten tial to become a manager. But when a friend told him about an entry-level job opening at a plumbing business, he was curious. After all, plumbing seemed like a stable job.

“You’re always going to need plumbing no matter what the economy is, good, bad, in the middle,” he said.

She had to start out as a preapprentice, basically a trial for the employee and employer alike, but said it was worth it.

Being a steamfitter offers the variety she craves, as no two days are alike. Steamfitters start with a blueprint or drawing and are responsible for all aspects of the installation of piping systems designed for the flow of liquids or gases at high pressure.

“I’ve learned that not just plumbing but all the trades are crucial to society as a whole,” he said. n

Her job with Current Electric in Wauwatosa takes her around the region to work on solar projects that are large and small, commercial and residen tial, on rooftops and on the ground. She’s ex cited to be in a rapidly growing field that offers something new to learn all the time.

TIM SANSONE REMEMBERS his first day as a youth-apprentice welder. Still in high school, he was being paid to train for his dream job, but it wasn’t going too well.

BEST TIP FOR ACING A JOB INTERVIEW: “Just be yourself and try to start a conversation. When you get a conversation in an interview then you’re in good shape.”

But he kept at it and, sure enough, got better. Today Sansone’s favorite feeling is starting a shift and nailing a perfect weld right away. “That makes you feel awesome,” he Sansone,said.

“Be humble and be receptive to information or else you’re gonna fall flat on your face.”

Sansone has wanted to work at Weldall since he was a kid watching his dad weld car parts together. “I picked one of those welders up and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Kind of like sewing, but with lightning,” he recalls.

He said welding is more involved than most people think, requiring knowledge of different metals and materials, the ability to read blueprints, and more. It can get pretty physical, too.

Sansone said. “It’s one of the best things that happened to me.”

His advice for anyone considering the trades? “Just go for it. You don’t need all that extra schooling, and if you play your cards right, you might be making six figures with no college debt.” n

I’ve heard I might be able to apply high school credits to a degree. What should I know about this?

» Two academic years for associate degrees.

Bradley Mitchell: “Some certificates may only be a class or two that can be done in one semester (four months). However, plenty of trades have one-year (August-May) technical diplomas that can qualify you for great jobs right away or potentially two-year associate degrees that will deepen your knowledge and skills.”

“Plenty of our students are working while going to school, especially in the trades! Most programs have some flexibility with how you can take your classes (whether school during the day so you can work at night or vice versa), or yes, potentially enrolling parttime. There will still be a limit as to how long you can take to complete an entire program, but most students are able to figure this out with their advisor.”

Bradley Mitchell: “Many incoming college students have taken dual credits at their high schools, or Start College Now credits at a local technical college during high school. These classes are usually indicated on your high school transcript and already on record at the college. If you’re applying to the same college that gave you those credits already, you shouldn’t have to do anything. If you’re looking at a different college, just ask the credit-granting college to send an official transcript to the other college and they’ll review them for transfer.”

I started through a Youth Apprentice Program as a Rough Mill Operator, where I learned each department of the construction floor, and what it takes to complete a project. My career path started at Glenn Rieder as an Apprentice, and now as a full-time employee.

On a day-to-day basis I start my day off by turning on and setting up the machine I’m using that day, which are the Panel Saw and Panel Press. I cut sheet goods material into parts and layup different veneers and laminates onto sheet goods.

Being in the custom architectural millwork industry, no day is the same. My typical day consists of working on various continuous improvement projects and assisting our project managers on our ongoing jobs.

I started at MGS as a senior in high school. I trained on the wire EDM and Graphite mills while going through tech school, then signed on as an apprentice and completed the required hours and training to receive my certificate as a journeyman Tool and Die Maker.

After earning my engineering degree, my professional career started with and has since encompassed electrical/ electronic and mechanical troubleshooting along with installations and programming of some sort. For the last 7 years it has been focused in the automation field.

Ensuring that OSHA and regulatory compliance is in order through inspections, audits, and training. Working as the point of contact for safety and environmental concerns during company updates and improvements. Teaming up with other departments to implement improvements to our manufacturing process to enhance safety and ergonomics in the workplace.

The two people who got me “into the doors” of Rytec actually still work here today. One is our Operations Manager (34 years with Rytec) and the other is our Order Fulfillment Specialist IV (16 years with Rytec). At the time they recruited me I was going to school pursuing fire science and was also working part-time as a firefighter. Rytec offered me the full-time opportunity I was looking for. I started out working as a Mechanical Assembler for our Spiral Door product line back in 1999. Soon after I got hired on I was given the opportunity to quickly progress and cross-train in several other areas within the shop. Around 2013 I was offered the opportunity to move into safety and ever since then, it has been my full-time career path at Rytec. They have continued to invest in me, my career and my journey.
