SUSTAINABILITY

Run Norwich Sustainability and

The environment is on all our minds, and this year Run Norwich is working to ensure that the 2022 edition is our most sustainable race to date.

What are we doing?

Well, some steps that we’ve taken include a change to the Run Norwich race magazine, which will no longer be printed for distribution to thousands of runners. Instead, we’ve enlisted BizClik Media Group to help produce and host this digital-only version (that you are currently reading!)

Guiding our runners through our city streets this year will be an electric lead vehicle, provided by race sponsor Robinsons Volkswagen. We’ve also ditched the plastic cups this year in favour of paper cups, which will be collected and repurposed at a local facility by our waste management partner Veolia UK.

Finally, all our 450+ volunteers will be wearing t-shirts made entirely from recyclable materials.

What can you do to help? Here’s how Veolia are helping us to make our waste management greener:

Travel

Park n’ Ride

Instead of driving into the city on race day, why not use one of the special park and ride services for the event?

Norwich Park n’ Ride will be operating a special service from both their Airport and Thickthorn locations every 20 minutes on race day. The first buses will leave at 7am and the last buses back from the City Centre will be at 5pm. More info in our travel section!

Beryl bikes

If you live near to the city centre, why not warm up for your ride by taking a Beryl bike to the start point? With bays dotted around the course it’s an easy way for you to get to and from the race in an active and sustainable way. This year the team have doubled the capacity of recycling bins, which will help to transform those used paper cups back into new products. In addition, all leftover food waste will be turned into green energy at a local anaerobic digestion plant.

Even the general waste at this year’s race will be recovered and converted into energy.

Please help us leave the city centre as we found it, by ensuring all rubbish goes into the correct bins and not discarding things like gel pouches while you are running.

If you’d like to bring your own running water bottle or pack, rather than use our water cups, then please do!

“As the runners cross the finish line, they can be safe in the knowledge that we are recycling or recovering as much of their materials as possible”

Keith McGurk Managing Director, Commercial Veolia UK
