Celebrating 30 Years of Maryvale Limousin We look forward to meeting you at our annual on property sale on Tuesday rd February 23 , 2016 and offer this catalogue for you to peruse. We are celebrating 30 years of breeding Limousin cattle at Maryvale this year. This has made us reflect on why we chose the Limousin breed for Maryvale. Limousin were chosen after using both British and other European breeds on our property. Whilst we live in what is considered to be reliable sound country in SA we still experience the typical Australian long dry periods and cold short growing seasons. Needing to have self-sufficient cattle due to our available time we searched the breeds to find what we considered to be hardy good doing cattle. Limousin are an ancient breed coming from hard conditions in France and naturally were self-selected for the traits we needed. And so we chose Limousin. This selection (which we have continued to improve) has worked well for us and our cattle have been successful in some of the harshest parts of Australia. Maryvale has supplied bulls for 20 years into the Birdsville track and NT. Sale cattle from these locations have brought premiums for the producer and so proven their survival traits. We have tailored our breeding style to suit the needs we and the market have. We ensure the cattle we offer have softness to assist in finishing ability, structural soundness to ensure they can walk long distances and an emphasis on growth to produce more saleable meat. These traits are selected together with the very important markers for docility, good milking ability and neat udders. Maryvale indexes for all traits are above average. To celebrate the 30 yrs, Maryvale is offering two beautiful heifers typical of our breeding style as Lot 1 and Lot 2. One being the first Paynes Derby heifer to be sold in Australia and the other a Maryvale Hammertime daughter being a granddaughter of TMF Westwood. The character of these females has to be seen to be appreciated, coming from a background of noted sires which Maryvale has selected personally and imported from Canada. Vogt Family 1991
To seek the type of female we wished to start with, we searched Australia. There was a limited choice as we decided to use French pure only. Mitchfield Mary a French pure cow which came to Australia from NZ was being flushed regularly and was producing excellent progeny.
Jeneure
We purchased a daughter Ashfield Astre, and 2 granddaughters Ashfield Jeneure and Ashfield Illustre. These females and their progeny continued to be the base breeders at the Maryvale stud for many years. Being flushed and mated to many different sires. We selected some specific Angus females to start breeding up Blacks which has been the base of our black content in the herd. The next females to join the stud were the pick of the Palmdale herd from WA. From the French pure base and the Australian bred up females came very strong genetics. We chose to hold 1st calf off breeding polls Hannah until the base was formed, and the poll genes had strengthened. Now we are seeking to use Homo Polled sires and producing all polled animals.

TMF Westwood and Sons On one of our trips to Canada a visit back to Top Meadows Farms introduced us to TMF Westwood. Simon’s immediate comment to us was that he was the best polled Limousin sire he has seen. Westwood now rates with us as a proven sire and as being the most influential sire we have used in 30 yrs. The style, volume, balance of figures and character stands him apart from the crowd. Westwood’s progeny are bringing comments which we love to hear. In a recent sale catalogue David Eagleson from Ulster 1 Limousins wrote about Maryvale Goliath a son of Westwood. When describing two sale bulls sired by this Westwood son David says “Maryvale Goliath has hit the mark when crossed with most cows. His docile nature, softness and sheer amount of meat has really made us admire him.” Further comments from David about this Westwood Son’s progeny included the phrases;

Maryvale Hammertime is also a son of Westwood who sold for $8000 to Kevin Beal of Shannalea Limousin stud in WA. He is another example of a great son of TMF Westwood. A recent comment from an independent technician was that he ranked Maryvale Hammertime as one of the best Limousin bulls in Australia! His progeny at Maryvale are outstanding. After 30 years of constant ET and AI using possibly 200 sires, Westwood wins the prize as a bull which puts the most consistent stamp on his progeny. The next sire to watch from us is RPY Paynes Derby who as you will see by his young progeny is adding character that should appeal. This black and homo polled sire has won top Canadian accolades for 3 years in a row. Our current Derby calves from this season are looking impressive. There are more exciting sires in the programme and we look forward to seeing their progeny.

Peter has always been particular with his selection of high growth Limousin sires with finishing ability and has consistently achieved excellent results, using Limousin over Angus Fresian cross females. Maryvale sires have fitted well into his performance based programme. Demonstrates what a combination of good management and good genetics can achieve. Exceptional weight for age, exceptional eating quality, and exceptional finishing ability.
Melbourne Royal Carcase Results The champion export steer, exhibited by Lewis Bruggemann and bred by SR & HE Jaeschke was awarded champion export carcase with a score of 87.13. The Limousin X Shorthorn steer had a carcase weight of 342kg, a dressing percentage of 55.16 percent, it scored maximum points for p8 fat, rib fat, EMA and total yield.
Melbourne Show Steer Success Champion Export Steer on Hoof & Hook A Maryvale sire bred the winning steer at the Melbourne show in 2015.
Bred by long term clients, the Jaeschke’s from Waikerie, the steer was outstanding and deserved the result given. Jaeschkes are long term Limousin cross breeders who have topped markets consistently and have appreciated the return Limousin cattle have offered them.
Maryvale Commercial Sales All cattle at Maryvale are registered stud animals. It is interesting to note the return we consistently get for surplus cattle. Cows and young calves topped Mount Compass Breeder sale at $2230 each. Cows for slaughter have brought $2000 again topping that market. This demonstrates that pure bred or high content females are a great investment and give a bonus in to the bank Note:- Limousin females mated to a Limousin achieve above average return both for their progeny and meat value.
As clients they are particular and careful with their bull selection and apply the same criteria to the female selection to use as the base females. We have admired their principles and skills in selection .The result of these skills is the extra dollars paid into their bank.

Teys to reward meat yield By Ben Swain
Teys Australia has recently announced a bold vision to reward cattle producers for the meat yield their cattle deliver.
This is good news for breeders of Limousin and Limousin infused cattle, whose reputation for out yielding other breeds is well known. Existing quality parameters will be maintained, as will the MSA grading system, of which Teys has based its payment system on since 2008. For producers that turn off cattle that currently meet those requirements, but are higher yielding, the rewards could be significant. Payments based on actual meat yield will be made possible by the rapid advances in carcase x-ray technology that can provide a breakdown of each scanned carcase into red meat, bone and fat. Previously, processors relied on eye muscle depth and fat to give a yield estimate.
2015 MARYVALE JUNIOR LIMOUSIN SHOW The 2015 Maryvale Junior Limousin Show was definitely an event to remember. We were ecstatic to hold our biggest event yet, with 118 enthusiastic competitors rolling up in Tamworth, with representation from South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania!
Processors regularly report significant differences in the value they can extract from different carcases that may be the same weight and have the same amount of fat cover. By making payments based on saleable meat yield, Teys will reward those producers that turn off the cattle that make more money throughout the supply chain. Plans to roll out the Value Based Payment system are underway with Teys expecting to be rewarding cattle producers based on meat yield within the next 2 years. The program will likely commence with grassfed and grainfed MSA cattle, but could ultimately include all cattle that Teys process. Identifying and using those Limousin sires that produce calves whose carcases possess high meat yield, together with high quality is the challenge for the breed moving forward. Whilst processors will be keen to reward producers that supply high meat yield carcases, demand for meat eating quality will continue to grow and will most likely be the cornerstone of payment systems in the future.

We are located between the two small townships of Allendale North and Hamilton. Our property has a “Maryvale Limousins” sign on the main road. Accommodation is readily available in Kapunda and both the nearby Barossa and Clare Valleys which are both very renowned areas of attraction. Information on the Animals for Sale Health Maryvale is MN3 Accredited under the BJD Market Assurance Program. All bulls have been vaccinated twice with 7 in 1, and have also been vaccinated against vibriosis and pesti-virus. The lumps on the necks of some bulls is a result of an unavoidable reaction to the vibriosis vaccine. They are harmless lumps and should be considered as marks of glory as it demonstrates that they have been successfully vaccinated against this reproductive disease!
A guide to EBV Information An Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) is an estimate of the genetic merit of an animal for each trait measured. In this catalogue EBV’s for each trait that has been measured have been provided. EBV’s have been provided for the following traits: Calving Ease Calving ease EBV’s are based on calving ease (CE) scores, birth weights and gestation length. The more positive the calving ease EBV, the easier calving the bull’s progeny should be. Gestation Length This EBV ranks animals based on the time between conception and the birth of a calf. Shorter gestation length is indicated by negative EBV’s and longer by positive EBV’s. Birth Weight Birth weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value, the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. Milk 200 Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animals milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it effects the 200 Day weights of their calves. 200 Day Growth 200 Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 & 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early stages. 400 Day Growth 400 Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of the animals taken between 301 and 500 days, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for yearling weight. 600 Day Growth 600 Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. Docility Docility EBV (%) is based on the animals docility score taken at weaning and estimates the genetic differences for docility. A more positive EBV indicates more docile progeny. Domestic Terminal $ Index Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial crossbred herd (run in a temperate environment) targeting grass finished production for the domestic trade. Animals are assumed to be pasture grown with finished progeny weighing 475kg at 18 months, from British Breed cows. All progeny are slaughtered.

Bull Management & Taking Delivery of your New Bull Courtesy of Dick Whale IBMS Taking Delivery of your New Bull To help your new bull or bulls settle into their new home as quickly as possible, the following points may be of some help. • •

All Maryvale bulls have been run in large mobs most of their lives, so they’ve always had plenty of mates around, and have “never” been alone. It’s a good idea to have some of your own cattle in the yards when your new bull/s arrive, a handful of steers, or PTIC cows or even an old bull; just something to keep them company, whilst they survey their new surroundings. At Maryvale, we handle our cattle quietly and confidently, we always show our cattle respect, and our cattle respect us. We generally use a motorbikes to yard and handle the bulls. The bulls have not been handled with horses or dogs. Handle your new bull/s quietly and with respect and he’ll settle into his new home well, and will be easy to handle whenever the need arises.
Bull Management Maryvale would like to make some suggestions to assist your newly purchased bull to settle into his new environment and also provide some general bull management tips. SETTLING IN: • • • • • •
The majority of bulls have been running in a large mob. Once unloaded, ensure he has company (eg cow or steer) and plenty of food in front of him, until he is able to be placed into his mob. Don’t box bulls up too much – the majority of breakdowns are caused in the bull paddock when new bulls are directly added to an existing group of bulls. Be aware that it is a new environment to them and some time in the yards may be required. Remember the pecking order scenario with other bulls – the newest addition may receive a hard time for a little while. Perhaps run bulls along side each other for a while before running them together. They are used to being treated in a gentle manner and will respond accordingly and should be treated with respect and kindness.
JOINING TIME • • • •
All bulls should be serving ability tested each year to ensure they are sound, prior to going out for mating. Once they are out working, please check them regularly to make sure they have not had a breakdown or moved paddocks etc. This practice is essential! Always put a back up bull in for a couple of weeks in single mating situations to cover yourself against bull failure. Don’t mate bulls with horns and polled/dehorned bulls together. Single mating is preferred. If multiple joining, put in bulls that have been together prior to joining and ensure they are roughly the same age, weight, and size.
AFTER JOINING • •
Try and split bulls up, particularly if you have a large number of bulls. If finding suitable paddocks is a problem, consider running mature bulls with sheep to allow this split up. After taking them out of their joining mobs, provide plenty of feed in front of them. This will ensure minimum fighting.
