Good evening Middle School Spartan Families, Our time continues to fly by and the number of MS events/activities will make you dizzy! This month's strategic focus is courage. E.E. Cummings said, "It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are" and I am not sure there is a better quote to encapsulate the journey our Middle School students travel. During this transformative period, students experience triumphs as well as challenges all while discovering where their interests lead them. We are committed to providing an educational experience that

equips your children with the tools they need to succeed academically and beyond.

Our partnership challenge this month with you is to continually add an essential ingredient to their journey- enthusiasm. With almost magical influence, enthusiasm often becomes the driving force behind innovation, creativity, and the pursuit of excellence. With it, we can nurture an environment of lifelong learning and determination. We know that together, we can utilize the profound impact knowledge, enthusiasm and courage has with our students and discover their full potential. BIXBY MIDDLE SCHOOL STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Brought to you by Coach Pence

Spartans, I want to introduce you to our strength and conditioning program here at Bixby and paint a picture of our day in the weight room with your kiddos!

This year we have had a record breaking number in the weight room. We currently have 550 high school students enrolled in high school S&C class, and 220 7th graders enrolled between 3 classes during the day. We are also working with 6th hour sports to get extra work in as well. We will train anywhere from 700-800 student athletes 7-12th grade each day. When you run those numbers it comes out to 25-35% of the total student population 7-12th grade. This year we have 2 full time strength & conditioning coaches and several sport coaches that help throughout the day. Our goal is to train as many Bixby Athletes as possible to help improve their performance and keep them healthy on and off the field, court, track, etc.

We are wrapping up the 7th week of school headed into the month of October. These weeks are focused on building a strong foundation with our movement patterns. When working with novice athletes we like to keep things simple. Think of our “meat and potatoes” as our main exercises throughout our program. Getting really good at them and then slowly incorporating more exercises as the students are showing great technique. So far this semester we’ve been working on movements like a squat, hinge, push, pull, core, jump patterns, and our clean complex. As we go forward we will add progressions to each of these movements to increase load, volume, and difficulty. For example, our squat began as a PVC zombie squat and now we are doing barbell front squat.

Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance (TRSA) gave us a $2000 grant to purchase start up equipment for our Girls & Gears initiative. This is a FLEX class aimed at teaching young women all about robotics and programming.

Research shows that…

-Playing a musical instrument reduces stress, anxiety, and depression.

-When learning an instrument while the brain is still maturing, it helps the brain to better connect the right and left hemisphere, this results in the brain being more capable of processing complex information.

-70% of admission officers of the nations universities say High School credit and achievement in the arts are significant considerations for admission.

-Taking previous academic achievement into account, scores were significantly higher for those actively participating in making music. The effect was most pronounced for those who were highly engaged with instrumental music.

Strategies for Parents -Find a time to ask your child about their current favorite song. This will give you a chance to share your favorite song from when you were your child’s age. Listen to both songs together, it will likely help you to engage in conversation and relate to your child through something that interests you both!

-Have your child perform something that they are working on in class, then ask them to tell you what makes it fun for them, what makes it challenging for them, and why they chose to perform that specific music.

-Watch a favorite movie together and talk about how the music in the movie adds to the overall effect. Look up other compositions by the same composer and find a new soundtrack that you like!
