CONSERVING OUR NATURAL WORLD Each year, the Vancouver Aquarium engages with close to one million visitors and many more people through our communications initiatives and digital channels. Our conservation programs connect Canadians from coast to coast by inspiring personal action to effect change. Moving forward, we will be replacing ageing infrastructure and life-support systems and expanding our exhibits and visitors spaces. We will also be expanding our programs to engage even more Canadians in the conservation, research and education of aquatic life.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown – November 21, 2012 Join us at our annual Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown where 12 of the city’s top chefs compete head to head with original, oceanfriendly chowder, paired with local craft beer.

Night at the Aquarium – June 2013 (date TBD) Night at the Aquarium is the signature fundraising gala of the Vancouver Aquarium. Savour tantalizing fare from a variety of Vancouver’s top Ocean Wise restaurants and indulge in wine from both local and international wineries.

Toast to the Coast – October 2013 (date TBD) Unite with 500 foodies and wine lovers in support of the Vancouver Aquarium’s conservation of aquatic life. Toast to the Coast transforms the Aquarium into a spectacular after-hours experience. Proceeds directly support the Aquarium’s conservation, research and education programs.

These programs range from our nationwide Ocean Wise sustainable seafood program, to our annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured or abandoned marine mammals. SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING EVENTS Inspiration Gala – November 1, 2012 Over the past seven years, the Inspiration Gala has raised more than $9.1 million for breakthrough cancer research. This year’s gala is raising funds for pancreatic cancer.

Jingle Mingle – November 29, 2012 Celebrate the holiday season at this festive cocktail party with silent and live auction items. Last year’s Jingle Mingle raised $510,000 for cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre.

underwent a series of tests and scans, was diagnosed with lymphoma, and began chemotherapy. BCWF PROGRAMS Angling Ambassador Program is a joint partnership between the BCWF and the Freshwater Fisheries Society to encourage new anglers and families to go fishing in BC. Ambassadors offer free fishing advice at easily accessible lakes that support healthy and abundant fish stocks.

Artist of the Year Program is an annual competition that selects a resident BC Artist whose work exhibits the beauty of BC’s fish, wildlife and habitat. The sale of these limited edition art prints fund conservation projects throughout the province and, at the same time, recognize the talent of BC artists.

BC National Archery in the Schools Program promotes instruction in international-style target archery as part of the in-school curriculum to improve academic performance and participation in the shooting sports.

Becoming an Outdoors Woman Program (BOW) offers the opportunity, over a weekend, to introduce BC women 19+ from all socio-economic backgrounds to some basic outdoor recreational activities and survival techniques in a fun, relaxed and non-competitive atmosphere.

Conservation & Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) is a mandatory course for those 14+ to obtain a provincial hunting license in British Columbia. The B.C. Wildlife Federation administers this course on behalf of the province.

Fishing Forever is a series of province-wide events designed to provide fishing opportunities for people with special needs and to build docks and accessible walkways providing opportunities for all individuals who are physically challenged to enjoy BC’s wonderful lakes, rivers and streams.

Outdoor Passport Program provides a process for BCWF members to obtain permission to access private lands. Members must complete an online course and pass an exam to qualify for an Outdoor Passport.

Wetlands Education Program activities result in hands-on habitat restoration, enhancement and conservation in dedicated communities throughout British Columbia. The pillar events include: the Wetlands Institute, Wetlandkeepers, Map Our Marshes, and the Wild Kidz Camps – all of which educate BC communities about the importance of wetland stewardship for fish and wildlife habitat and water quality.

Wilderness Watch is a program where BCWF member volunteers patrol rural areas within their region to “Observe, Record and Report” infractions of environmental legislation (fish and wildlife poaching, pollution, vandalism, etc.) to the proper authorities.

COURAGE BUILDERS – YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Canuck Place Children’s Hospice was built with the support of the community. Without the commitment of British Columbians, this beautiful home for families in need would not exist. Canuck Place relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations and various organizations to fund approximately 80% of its operating costs. The remaining 20% is funded by the provincial government. Canuck Place services are made available to families at no cost.

THE NEED The demand for the Canuck Place program continues to rise. Internal estimates suggest that the hospice is only reaching approximately 25% of the current need in B.C. In 2011, the hospice incurred a 13% increase in new admissions and a 15% increase in the number of children supported by the end-of-life program.

NEW BUILDING Just under half of the families currently served by the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice program reside in the Fraser Valley region. To meet the growing need in the province, a second Canuck Place Hospice will be housed within the Dave Lede Campus of Care, located in Abbotsford. With 10 beds and five family suites, the new 30,000-square-foot hospice will double our current capacity to better meet the growing need for pediatric palliative care services across the province.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Respite Care Family support and respite care involves 24-hour in-house care on a temporary basis for a child with or without the family staying.

Respite visits also provide an opportunity for ongoing evaluation of a child’s health.

Pain And Symptom Management Pain and symptom management requires doctors and nurses providing 24-hour in-house care aimed at managing the adverse physical and emotional symptoms of a child’s illness or the side effects of treatment.

Bereavement Counselling Grief and bereavement counselling is available to parents, siblings, loved ones and to the child, to assist them in finding the courage and resources to cope with their challenges both during the child’s illness and after the child dies. Counselling and family support groups are offered to children and families in the Okanagan, Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley with plans to extend these services further to families throughout the province.

End Of Life Care End-of-life care involves comprehensive services, including counselling and 24-hour nursing care for children whose life expectancy is measured in days to weeks.

Recreation Canuck Place employs a full-time certified recreation therapist to organize excursions for children living with life-threatening illnesses, teens and their families throughout the year, including summer, fall and spring camps.

Music, Art, Education Music, art, play and education are offered to encourage selfexpression and foster communication throughout a child’s illness.

Whether a life is measured in days, weeks, or months, children deserve the opportunity to learn, develop and grow. Children in care and their siblings attend school at Canuck Place with a full-time teacher on staff to keep them up-to-date on their studies.

Provincial Outreach Consultation And Care Telephone consultation by nursing and medical staff is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week for families and caregivers, at no financial burden to the family. Members of the interdisciplinary team also provide expert advice, education and consultation in the field of pediatric hospice palliative care to other service providers involved in the care of these children, including home care agencies, physicians, nurses, social workers and other disciplines in hospitals or the community across BC.

BREATHING LIFE INTO THE FUTURE Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. It is a multi-system disease that mainly affects the lungs and the digestive system.

Most deaths related to cystic fibrosis (CF) are due to lung disease.

Currently, there is no cure.

Every week in Canada two children are diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and one person dies from the disease.

Cystic Fibrosis Canada is one of the world’s top three charitable organizations committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. The organization is an internationally recognized leader in CF research, innovation and clinical care.

WHAT WE DO Since 1960, Cystic Fibrosis Canada has invested more than $140 million in leading CF research and care. We funded the research team that discovered the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis and continue to play a leading role in the worldwide race to develop new treatments and a cure for this disease.

In 2012/2013, we will invest more than $7.5 million in innovative research and clinical care and will fund 51 research projects, six targeted programs and partnerships, and 47 fellows and students.

GearUp4CF – June 22 – 30, 2013 GearUp4CF is a fundraising bike ride from Vancouver to Banff.

The nine-day, 1,200-kilometre ride has brought cyclists together to raise funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis for the past seven years.

Lawn Summer Nights – July 2013 Over four Thursdays in July, two hundred people in their 20s and 30s take part in a unique leisure sporting event in equal measure of philanthropy and fun.

WHAT WE DO RainCity Housing offers a broad range of services and support for people living with mental illness, addictions, unresolved health concerns and complex housing behaviours. People who choose our support are matched with the RainCity housing program that best meets their specific needs, recognizing that each person is unique and has experienced challenging and unique circumstances.

SERVICE AREA Last year we provided housing and support to more than 2,000 people: Ą 100 people housed throughout the city with a full array of supports. Ą 202 living inside with support 24 hours a day. Ą 204 people living with their own kitchen and bathroom – their very first home. We recognize how resourceful, courageous and persistent each person is in order to survive homelessness, and we see each individual as a person with talent, skill, ability and potential to create positive changes in their own life.

We develop respectful, trusting relationships with each individual, creating environments where they are recognized as having strengths, and encouraging each person to reconnect with their strengths and build on them. And we provide the right amount of support, not just the bare minimum, to all of our clients.

We support self-advocacy and, when needed, advocate for our clients. This results in individuals reclaiming their rights and can ultimately result in a larger transformation of the systems that our clients navigate on a daily basis.

The combination of the kind of support we offer and extraordinary values is what truly makes us different, while we work toward creating a home for every person. It recognizes and resonates with the rights of the people we work with and keeps those rights front and centre every day.

Providing housing is important. But real change takes place after someone has housing. Housing becomes a home when people choose to stay, where they feel safe and have a voice. It becomes a home when they feel part of a community, and feel valued and respected. It becomes a home when someone says, “I’m 42 years old and this is the first home I’ve ever had.”

HOW YOU CAN HELP – THE HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAM The individuals using RainCity Housing’s services are some of the most marginalized and vulnerable in our community. Because of traumatic histories, mental illness, substance use and often a combination of all these things, many have developed survival skills and symptoms that are difficult to address.

This often results in isolation from friends and family, lack of trust, lack of self-esteem or self-worth, and distancing themselves from the larger community.

With this in mind, RainCity Housing developed the Healthy Living Program, designed to help each individual who is new to housing start to make different, healthier choices – choices that move people from feeling overwhelmed to feeling hopeful. OK CORRAL MEDICAL CENTRE One of the most unique features of the ranch is the OK Corral Medical Centre. This state-of-the-art facility, staffed by trained, volunteer professionals, is open 24-7 during the medical camp season.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS SUPPORTED More than 30 different diagnoses are supported throughout the medical camp season. Specialty camps include autism spectrum disorder, spina bifida, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, Down syndrome and kidney and organ transplants, as well as gastrointestinal, blood and kidney disease and programs for the blind and visually impaired. like BC Children’s Hospital (craniofacial, hematology, oncology departments), the Children’s Heart Network, the Centre for Epilepsy and Seizure Education, the Children’s Organ Transplant Society, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (B.C.), the Kidney Foundation of Canada (B.C.) and many others.

PROGRAM AND FACILITIES With a lush forest backdrop and easy waterfront access, Zajac Ranch is the perfect camp setting. The natural beauty of the site is complemented by a variety of outbuildings and facilities that include: an accessible indoor pool and therapeutic spa, equestrian centre and petting zoo, adventure zone with high and low rope courses, climbing wall and archery targets, adapted watersports and lakeside recreation area, amphitheatre and tee pee village.

The path to complete and permanent recovery from drug and alcohol addiction is much more sophisticated than most realize.

To achieve life-long sobriety, the individual must receive: 1) Treatment of the symptoms 2) Treatment of the causes 3) The necessary tools to stay sober The abuse of drugs and alcohol, and other destructive behaviors, are merely symptoms of an addiction, and treating the symptoms is relatively easy. After a few months of abstinence, the symptoms disappear and the person begins to look and feel healthy. But if treatment ends here, as it does with most shortterm programs, relapse is almost certain. Treating the causes of the addiction and providing the necessary tools for “life after treatment” is an entirely different matter than just treating the symptoms. The causes of an addiction are the underlying issues that drove the person to abuse drugs and alcohol in the first place. They must be identified and effectively dealt with, which requires an intensive process of therapy.

Equally important, the individual must be provided with the necessary tools to stay sober, tools to help manage, cope with, or avoid the circumstances which initially contributed to the addiction. This requires developing proper social skills, life skills and vocational skills, as well as changing one’s attitudes, behaviors, and values. Ultimately, this requires adopting a completely new life-style.

To achieve this, the addict must be deprogrammed from old negative ways and be re-programmed with new healthy ones.

This process takes a great deal of time and expertise. To expect a person with a history of drug or alcohol abuse to accomplish this in only a few months is simply unrealistic. Decades of research and experience have established that obtaining permanent recovery is an intensive process that needs a long-term program of at least 2 years.

THE CHALLENGE

Experts and statistics both confirm that it takes a minimum of 2 years to achieve permanent recovery. Why then are there so many short-term programs?

The primary reasons are: 1) an addict’s refusal to accept or commit to the required length of time 2) the prohibitive cost of addiction treatment Most addicts believe or hope that they can successfully achieve sobriety in just a few months. They are not willing to commit to anything longer, even though their very lives may be at stake. Consequently, they only commit to short-term programs – which are nothing more than temporary “quick-fix” solutions. An addict’s refusal to accept or commit to the required length of time for attaining permanent recovery is the main reason why relapse is so common. We have repeatedly witnessed this as individuals come to us after completing short-term programs, some having spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on treatment, only to relapse.

Regarding the cost, most rehabilitation centers charge anywhere from $7,500 to $67,000 per month. At these rates, most cannot even afford a few months of treatment, never mind the entire 2 years necessary for permanent recovery.

The addiction recovery industry has responded to these challenges by offering primarily short-term rehab programs. These programs often provide luxurious facilities, as if comfort will help the treatment process. It doesn’t! If the underlying causes remain untreated and the tools to stay sober are not fully acquired, it is just a matter of time before the addiction re-appears THE SOLUTION

WelcomeHome is responding differently to these challenges. Because of funding by the John Volken Foundation, WelcomeHome can offer lasting recovery at no charge to program participants. Individuals only have to pay the admittance fee of $2,117.

Moreover WelcomeHome program participants stay in the program until they have successfully changed their lives, no matter how long it takes. When they graduate, they have been transformed into responsible, contributing members of society and have the will and the tools to truly become the best that they can be.
