Audubon Calendar sale

The Bitterroot Audubon 2020 Calendar is here! Bitterroot Audubon has the perfect calendar for your family and a perfect gift for you to send to loved ones. It is lightweight, packs easily and shows off the beauty of the Bitterroot so well with some photos of our stunning avian friends that live here. The photos were taken by talented Bitterroot photographers with drawings of birds by Lone Rock 4th graders. The proceeds from calendar sales stay here in the valley for Bitterroot Audubon’s work on conservation, education and scholarship projects. You can’t find another calendar that does that! Help a local non-profit help the valley’s habitat and wildlife! Sharing Tree donations needed

Stevensville Sharing Tree is now accepting donations of new warm winter clothing. There is a need for winter coats, snow pants, snow boots, hats, gloves, scarves, warm pants, long-sleeved shirts, hoodies, pajamas, underwear and warm socks for children ages 0 to 18, all sized. For tax-deductible monetary donations, make checks payable to Sharing Tree and mail to P.O. Box 747, Stevensville MT 59870. If you would like to volunteer, people are needed to help with picking up gifts from the banks and churches this year.

Knights of Columbus Council 6130 Hamilton are running a Coats 4 Community Coat Drive now through December 1. Our Savior Lutheran Advent/Christmas Schedule

The congregation of Our Savior Lutheran Church and Preschool of Stevensville welcomes the community to join in this season of Advent as we prepare to welcome the birth of our Savior. Wednesday Vesper services at 7 p.m. follow a light supper at 6 p.m., from December 4-18. Bring your family to enjoy food, fellowship and worship to make the holidays more meaningful.

The Christmas preschool program will be Tuesday, December 17 at 7 p.m. What could be more wonderfully joyful than to hear the message of Jesus’ birth from the mouths of small children? Christmas Eve early service with Divine Sacrament will be December 24 at 4:30 p.m. The Christmas Eve carol service with Sacrament is celebrated at 7:30 p.m.

On Christmas Day, the service of readings with Sacrament is celebrated at 10 a.m.

All are welcome to celebrate the joyous season at Our Savior, a member of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, located at 184 Pine Hollow Road. Follow the Eastside Highway south, about one mile past Burnt Fork Market. Turn left on Pine Hollow. Cross the track, then the canal and turn left to the church with three crosses in the yard.

Chocolate Tasting

The Victor Heritage Museum will hold its 23rd annual Chocolate Tasting Party with Silent Auction on Monday, December 2 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Museum. Claudia and Carl will be there with Out West Wagons for horse-drawn wagon rides around Victor. There will be homemade chocolates, wassail, and great items for sale in the silent auction. Visit with many of your friends and neighbors, and lots of camaraderie. This is the only fundraiser held by the Museum each year. Bidding in the silent auction closes at 7:30 p.m. The Museum is located at 125 Blake Street, on the corner of Blake and Main Street. Corvallis Community Christmas Celebration and Tree Lighting Join in the 2019 Corvallis Christmas Celebration on Wednesday, December 4, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the lighting of the lights on the Marty Litvin memorial tree in front of Corvallis High School. After the tree lights are turned on everyone is invited to come inside for holiday songs and music performed and led by the Corvallis High School Choir and Jazz Band. There will be refreshments for all and an appearance by Santa Claus with treats for children. Participating community organizations are the Corvallis Civic Club, the Bitterroot Women’s Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary #91. Bitterroot Tree Service assists with the lights for the tree. Choral entertainment

Corvallis High School’s choir department will be presenting “The High Lord’s Entertainment and Desserts,” a medieval themed concert with an array of desserts and beverages on Thursday, December 5 at the Cornerstone Bible Church in Hamilton. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is an excellent way to kick off the holiday season.

Tickets are $7.00 each and available at the main office at Corvallis High School. Tickets will also be available at the door. Children 5 and under are free admittance. Come and enjoy an evening of revelry and music!

‘Christmas with Lewis and Clark’ concert

The North Valley Public Library is hosting a special Christmas with Lewis and Clark concert on Thursday, December 5 at 6 p.m.

The Montana ShamRockers have toured northwest highways and byways for many years with their lively Celtic Christmas Concert. Now, spend the holidays “on the road” with the Corps of Discovery. Hear beloved traditional songs and their often surprising back stories. The lads bring history alive, turning their signature warmth and wit on the folklore, legends and lies of a fascinating chapter in our infant nation’s saga.

Each member of this acoustic vocally driven quartet has enjoyed a distinguished solo career. Together, The Montana ShamRockers, Montana’s unofficial goodwill ambassadors, simply offer the thrill of Celtic music, the joy of laughter and the power of love for your holiday pleasure. This program is appropriate for 13 and up.

“A Stevensville Country Christmas” at St. Mary’s Mission and Museum will feature Nativities Around the World, plus a fun exhibit of Cookie Jars on Friday, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. A Chapel Open House will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. with Kids Crafts from 7 to 9 p.m. The Christmas Exhibit and St. Mary’s Gift Shop will be open Dec. 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The community is invited to enjoy the beautiful lighted outdoor Nativity Scene throughout the Christmas Season. BRHA Cookie Walk

You won’t want to miss the annual Cookie Walk. This is not your ordinary bake sale! Do yourself a favor this holiday season and skip all the fuss of baking those holiday sweet treats and waiting in long lines to buy gifts by attending this unique “Cookie Walk, Bake Sale & More” on Saturday, December 7, hosted by the Bitter Root Humane Association.

Talented area bakers have been busy whipping up their favorite holiday cookies in every flavor, shape and size. Shoppers can tour the cookie tables and choose their favorites

in any quantity (sold by the pound) and stock up on all the other individually priced sweet treats of pies, cakes, breads and candies, and of course there will also be goodies for our four legged furry friends! To round out the event, some great gift and decorating items, including unusual cookie jars and tins, handmade holiday stockings and holiday jewelry along with whimsical pet items will also be on the sale tables to treat yourself or all those lucky folks on your holiday shopping list!

To accommodate our shoppers, this year’s event is being held at the larger and accessible St. Francis Pastoral Community Center, 411 S. 5th Street in Hamilton with plenty of parking available in the rear parking lot. Doors will be open 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 7th. Plan to come early for the best selection since this event has sold out early in the past three years!

Booster Club Bazaar

The 36th annual Stevensville Booster Club Holiday Bazaar will be held Saturday, December 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. What a great chance to shop local businesses all in one location as you wrap up your holiday shopping. The event will be held in the Stevensville High School Gym.

Living Nativity display

Come view the many live nativities presented by different valley churches and then enjoy music by a variety of community and church groups, refreshments and mingling with other community members. The Living Nativities will be held at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds under the grandstand on Saturday, December 7 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free. Non-perishable food items can be donated to benefit local food banks.

‘Intellectual’ Wreath Making

If you think ripping a book apart is sacrilege, you’re not going to want to read any farther. But if you think repurposing old books is creative, this event is for you. Make a wreath out of an old book, bring your own or there will be more than a few available.

Join new Adult Services Specialist, Nancy Bevins, in an inaugural, “Rip that Book” apart night.

The North Valley Public Library is hosting this book ripping on Monday, December 9 at 6 p.m. Book burning, book banning, now we have book rolling. Roll those pages up to make a creative wreath for the holidays or for anytime. Use Shakespeare’s Sonnets for an interesting twist on text.

Bring a glue gun and large cardboard square if you have them. If not, don’t worry, there will be a few supplies available. This workshop is suitable for adults. Keeping Christ in Christmas in the Bitterroot Valley

Celebrate the reason for the season at the 2nd Annual Living Nativities held on Saturday, December 7th at Ravalli County Fairgrounds from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Several churches in the valley will be presenting six different scenes depicting Christ’s birth beginning with the Annunciation of Mary through the Arrival of the Wise Men to see the Christ child. All ages young and old are invited to share in this interfaith community experience complete with live music, cocoa and cookies, and of course sharing the Christmas spirit with neighbors, family and friends.

Admission is free but people are encouraged to bring food to donate.

Canned goods and non-perishable items will be collected to give to the four main food banks here in the Bitterroot Valley from Darby to Lolo.

Last year was the first of what event coordinators hope to be many Living Nativities for years to come.

One of last year’s event coordinators, Joe Jessop, said, “We had no idea how many people to expect and were thrilled when over 300 people showed up on what turned out to be a chilly December evening.” This year the organizers are hoping to increase the number of people who will get to share

in this event.

Although there will be plenty of donated heaters on hand for the event, the public is reminded that it may be cold that night so please dress accordingly. The nativity scenes will be held in the stalls under the grandstands at the fairgrounds while the refreshments and music will be held in the flower building.

This year’s event coordinator, Amy Horlacher, said, “We hope that more and more churches will want to participate with us as the years go on.”

The Living Nativities Committee hopes this interfaith community experience will become a treasured tradition in the Bitterroot Valley for years to come!

The first Monday in December is a big day for the little town of Victor. For the last 23 years, the celebration in Victor has centered around the Victor Heritage Museum located at the corner of Main Street and Blake Street. With wagon rides sponsored by Farmers State Bank, visitors have a chance to enjoy the Christmas Lights around town.

But the center of the celebration is the Victor Heritage Museum, chocolate and the silent auction. This is the main fundraiser the museum does and its success is very important to the museum. Proceeds from the day’s events provide maintenance funds such as electricity, insurance, and anything related to the general upkeep of the museum.

Any additional funds raised are used toward a variety of items. Over the years the members have been able to have the museum painted, new gutters put in, and this past year, a new door on the north side of the museum was put in. Brian Langton, one of the members, did the carpentry work as well as put in a small hand bridge over the rails located outside the museum.

“It means a lot to me to help,” said Langton, a lifelong resident of Victor. “My great grandfather was a depot agent for the railroad here.”

Mary Lee Bailey, another member, said a lot of people don’t know that Victor has this great little museum. “There is a lot of history here so people should come on down.”

One new member, Jennie Beckert, has assumed the duty of assession coordinator.

She is amassing information on the various displays and displaying that information with the artifact itself. A newcomer to Victor, she said this has given her new insights into Victor.

Joann Hosko is another lifelong resident of Victor. She said that a couple of grants including one from the University of Idaho, has enabled the museum to get a new computer and printer as well as update the software. She said the ongoing community involvement with the museum is a tremendous help to them.

One community member who helps is Georgine Forgatch. She is the proprietor of Lisa Archer Silks in Victor. Last year she put on a silk painting workshop with all the proceeds going towards the museum. She and Hosko said it was a fun afternoon and a great little fundraiser for the museum.

Suzanne Tout, president of the museum board (and treasurer), also spends time writing grants, answering emails, and answering questions. She said volunteers are always appreciated, especially if the volunteer has a specific task in mind such as gardening, or taking over her job, she added with a laugh.

But on to the chocolate and the silent auction. Last year more than 300 people attended the event which is stretched over several hours. There are about 50 people who donate chocolate candies, cookies, brownies and other confections. There are also some non chocolate candies and cookies, too. Hosko contacts the people who donate to make sure they are still willing to donate. Almost all of the goodies are homemade and sure to remind you of Christmas with your grandma. There is also a chocolate fountain with fruit and cream puffs.

There are drinks available as well, coffee, hot chocolate and wassail.

And then there is the silent auction. Early in the fall, the members of the museum head out into the Bitterroot seeking donations. Hosko said that because they have been doing this for such a long time, and there are so few members working on the silent auction, many of the donors know

The bidding is fierce with people circling the table, keeping an eye on ‘their’ prize. Tout expects there will be between 200 and 250 items in the silent auction.

The Chocolate Tasting will begin at 3pm this year and run to 8pm. Tout said the silent auction will end promptly at 7:30.

The cost is $5 per person and that includes all the chocolate you can eat while you are at the museum. Hosko recommends that if you want a plate of goodies, to call Tuesday

to see if there are any remaining goodies.

Christmas tree permits now available Wednesday, November 27, 2019

Cutting your own Christmas tree is a special holiday outing available to those who live near National Forest Lands. There’s an abundant choice of trees and species on the Bitterroot National Forest. In order to remove a Christmas tree from the National Forest, you need to have a Christmas tree permit.

They may be purchased for $5 at any Forest Service office or at authorized retailers including Bob Wards, Murdoch’s, and Lone Pine Conoco in Hamilton, Mr. T’s in Darby, Merc Fresh Market in Corvallis, and Cenex in Stevensville. Only cash or personal check will be accepted for payment.

Free Permits for 4th Graders!

As part of the ‘Every Kid Outdoors’ national initiative which strives to connect youth with nature, the Bitterroot National Forest is offering one free Christmas tree permit to every fourth grader. To participate in the free holiday tree program visit www. everykidoutdoors.gov. Fourth graders must present a valid EKO Pass or paper voucher at their local Forest Service office (not vendors) to receive their free permit. For more information call (406) 363-7100.

Here are some tips for you to get the best tree possible, and manage the forest for years to come.

• Taking a tree from an overcrowded area will give the remaining trees more space, moisture and light to grow.

• Cutting is not allowed in restricted areas such as developed recreation sites and campgrounds, existing

timber sale areas or previously thinned areas.

• Please do not cut out the top of a tree or leave a stump higher than eight

inches. Once you have selected and cut your tree, place the tag around the stem or a branch of the tree before transporting.

• Be sure you are cutting your tree on National Forest land. Maps of the National Forest may be purchased at any Forest Service office Mon-Fri. 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Maps are $14 each.

• Be prepared for winter conditions and take a vehicle equipped with 4-wheel drive, snow tires or chains. Start early since winter days are shorter. Keep a watchful eye for snowmobiles and other recreationists walking, skiing, or sledding on back roads.

• If your tree won’t be set up right away, store it in a cool area. When you’re ready to bring it indoors, cut at least an inch off the bottom. The tree will be thirsty so make sure there is always plenty of water in the tree stand. If the base dries out, resin will form over the cut end and the tree will not be able to absorb water causing it to dry out quickly. Most fresh-cut trees should last at least five weeks before drying out if properly cared for.

• Permits are for personal use only and limited to three per family. If you want to remove Christmas trees for fundraising or boughs for commercial use, visit or call the Darby/Sula Ranger District at (406) 821-3913.
