Golf Scramble to benefit LifeGuard Group

The 4th annual LifeGuard Group Golf Scramble will be held Friday, September 10 at the Hamilton Golf Course. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a shot gun start at 10 a.m. Teams are welcome to sign up by calling Carson at 406-396-5053 or go to the LifeGuard Group facebook page.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime with an estimated 40.3 million individuals being sexually exploited globally and 2 million being exploited in the United States. Along with that, every hour, 34 more individuals enter the life of human trafficking. The LifeGuard Group is made up of experts that are committed to providing an aggressive and comprehensive approach to fight human trafficking. The groups works to respond, rescue, restore and revive in order to bring a survivor full circle and back onto his/her feet. The LifeGuard Group has recently obtained property in the Bitterroot for a safe house where they are able to give survivors of human trafficking a place to be rehabilitated. All the profits from the golf tournament will go towards making this safe place a reality.

Travelers’ Rest State Park fall hours and programs

Travelers’ Rest State Park will reduce its hours slightly for the fall and winter season beginning September 1. The park also has a variety of special weekend and evening programs lined up for the fall.

From Sept. 1-May 1, 2022, the park gates will be open to vehicles from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.

Pedestrian entrances are open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year. In September the visitor center will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. seven days a week and will host a variety of fall activities and interpretive programs.

Fall programs at Traveler’s Rest include: • Sept. 11, 25 and Oct. 9, 23 (11 a.m.): Trekker Kids programs, which include activities perfect for families.

• Sept. 11 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.) & 12 (11 a.m.-2 p.m.):Commemorate the 1805 Lewis & Clark Expedition camping at Travelers’ Rest with guest speakers, activities, and programs.

• Sept. 22 (6 p.m.): Join a fall equinox walk around the state park.

• Sept. 25 (11 a.m.-1 p.m.): Celebrate Public Lands Day at Travelers’ Rest by volunteering and working to improve park lands.

Bitterroot Climate Action Group

The Bitterroot Climate Action Group is pleased to resume a series of informational talks on locally relevant issues related to climate change with “Climate change and animal health,” a virtual talk by Scott Bovard, Missoula veterinarian. The presentation, which is co-sponsored by Montana Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate, will be at 7 pm on September 16, 2021, over Zoom. The talk will be free and open to the public, but registration is required, using the link https://bitterrootcag.org/eventregistration/ . Scott Bovard is a small animal veterinarian who has also cared for horses, camels, wild mammals (lynx and wolverines), and birds of prey. He is involved in climate change issues, as a member of the Citizens Climate Lobby, so is uniquely poised to address animal health and climate change.

The talk is part of a series of educational presentations sponsored by the Bitterroot Climate Action Group (BCAG), an organization of Bitterroot Valley residents interested in formulating responses to the problem of global warming. As part of this effort, BCAG provided matching funds for the City of Hamilton to purchase an electric vehicle charging station (to be installed at the Bedford Building) and donated ten HEPA filter units to the Burnt Fork Manor, to help vulnerable residents to cope with wildfire smoke. Fort Owen State Park ‘Mud Party’

Fort Owen “Mud Party” Interactive History Event for All Ages is Saturday, September 18 Friends of Fort Owen invites the public to a “Mud Party” hands-on interpretive event on Saturday, September 18, anytime between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm at Fort Owen State Park in Stevens-

ville.

Interpretive stations will focus on the art and science of making adobe brick, which is a rare building material for Montana.

Bring the kids and be prepared to get your hands muddy and have some fun at Fort Owen State Park!

The event will feature touchable examples of various types of adobe bricks, as well as soil scientists and adobe and historic preservation experts to show how to look for clay, what John Owen said in his journals about making adobe bricks, what’s in them, how to make them and how John Owen used them to build Fort Owen. Opening Weekend Waterfowl Hunt Blind Drawing

Waterfowl hunters interested in participating in the blind drawing for opening waterfowl weekend, October 2 and 3, 2021, at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge are requested to submit an e-mail with their name, ALS number, and list of preferred blind choices to leemetcalf@fws. gov. E-mails must be received by September 24, 2021. One e-mail per licensed hunter. All e-mails received will be randomized and drawn on September 27, 2021.

Successful participants will be e-mailed a blind site authorization form that must be in the possession of the successful applicant while hunting. Non-successful applicants will not be notified. Up to 3 other hunters may accompany the successful applicant. The blind options are Saturday morning, October 2, 7:07 am to12:00 pm; Saturday afternoon, October 3, from 12:00 pm to 7:13 pm; and Sunday morning, October 3, 7:08 am to12:00 pm; after which blinds are available on a first come-first served basis. Applicants may list, in order of preference, up to the 39 options as depicted in the table, below. If drawn, an applicant’s first available preference will be selected.
