Ul timately, the chef turns hero as he discovers his culinary ability to vanquish humanity’s enemies. Weingart laughs at the absurdity, but says, “We made it to be the movie that we want to watch.”
But aside from being both comic and apocalyptic, Weingart sees the community of New Missoula not unlike the current hub of five valleys.
The future of the film is somewhat uncertain, but Weingart doesn’t seem con cerned at present. He hopes it will have a stint in theaters before going on to streaming services, and plans an ex tensive marketing campaign using social media sources like TikTok. “MDT has been working on the project’s design, listening to public feedback, and invites you to chat regarding the construction, sched ule, project progress and design updates,” said Maclean.

The road will be reconstructed to a 44-foot top width that will provide two 12-foot travel lanes, a 12-foot center/left turn lane, and two 4-foot shoulders. Roadside slopes and ditches will be revised to improve safety and the vertical alignment and drainage features will be up graded throughout the project. A large radius horizontal curve will be installed at Rathbun Lane and a four-legged roundabout at Ambrose Creek Road. A graded platform for a future shared use path will be included.Thelane configuration in the current draft of the plan was revised based on public comments received since the last meeting. MDT now proposes to include two segments where the pavement will be striped as two lanes with passing allowed where adequate site distance is available.Theengineering survey, cadas tral survey and soil sampling are complete. The design plans are about 70% complete. The project will require extensive right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation and has now reached the right-ofway acquisition phase. The project will be advertised and let when the design is complete and all the permits and necessary rights-of-way acquisition is finalized.

The Needs Survey asked 150 area organizations, businesses, and others about potential demand and uses for a proposed Stevensville Community Center. The Community Center Committee compared the results to a separate analysis of other existing facilities in the Bitterroot Valley, and projected costs and revenue to support a Com munity Center. Bitterroot Audubon’s September meeting will feature a presentation on noxious weeds in Ravalli County by Kelly Ann Morris, Ravalli County Weed District Coordinator. Noxious weeds are non-native plants that have been introduced through human actions both purposely and accidentally. Due to their aggressive growth and lack of natural enemies, these species can be highly destructive, competitive, and difficult to control. According to Thomas, “Plans for a multi-purpose Stevensville Commu nity Center have been in the works since the late 1990s. A 3.5-acre piece of property was purchased in 2000 at the corner of Park Avenue and Middle Burnt Fork Road, and the Committee’s priorities now are to continue seeking community input and ideas, finalize plans, and raise the funds for con struction.”Apublic meeting will be held this fall to discuss the facility design and plans so far. The Committee is work ing with the Town of Stevensville to plan for a sewer main extension and connection in the next fiscal year, FY2024, which begins July 1, 2023.
The Stevensville Community Center is moving closer to becoming a reality, according to a press release issued by the Stevensville Communi ty Center Committee. Based on the results of a Needs Survey earlier this year and resulting refinements to the facility design and business plan, the Community Center Committee is now preparing for the capital campaign phase.According to Committee Chair Bob Thomas, “The survey revealed strong demand and support for the community center. It also gave us ideas for specific features to include like pickleball courts, a climbing wall, commercial kitchen, and of course a large event space for community gatherings. We also plan to have a smaller conference room and outdoor patio area for receptions and indoor/ outdoor gatherings.”

The positive side of fall birding is that the birds are not in a hurry to go south, they linger, taking on food and building fat reserves. This gives you plenty of time to study them. If you spook fall birds, they typically take flight and then return to the same spot. This is especially true for shore birds.
Here are pictures of some fall birds you could expect to see here in Western Montana.
Birding Journal

Snow Goose - move through in very large numbers at one time late in the fall.

Black-bellied Plover – non breeding plumage.

Western Montana sees large migrations of waterfowl, songbirds and shorebirds. Shorebirds are the first to migrate. We have found that unsuccessful breeders come first in early August, followed by adults, then juveniles. Song birds come in mid-September through October, and waterfowl begin migration in late Au gust and extend into mid-December. White Geese, Snow and Ross’s, are usually the last to come through in late November. Officially the migration
Field research that we conduct at Warm Springs Wildlife Man agement Area is our best local indicator of migra tion. Total shore birds for the year on August 21 in 2021 was 3,200. This year the total number is 6,800 and the migration has just begun. We are not sure why, perhaps the drier season and lack of water in Eastern Montana is causing birds to fly west in search of mudflats, which are critical for refueling (staging). Mud flats are in good condition at the Warm Springs WMA this year. On the August 21st survey date, we found 525 shorebirds in 22 species. Waterfowl and songbird numbers were up as well with a total of 107 species and 8,500 individuals. Just two weeks ago we only found 33 species and 4,840 individuals.Injusttwo weeks’ time the number of species has tripled, and the number of individuals has doubled. So if you enjoy birding, and I hope that you do, now is a good time to start walk ing along riparian stream banks, and scanning lakes and ponds. Granted, fall birding is a little tougher than spring birding. Many songbirds are juveniles and adults are not in breed ing plumage nor are they singing. In other words, many of the songbirds look like females. In addition, many waterfowl are just coming out of molt and often don’t look like the breeding plumage pictures in your field guide. Shorebirds can be especially difficult as fall plumage would make you swear it’s a different species than the breed ing plumage. However, bill shape and size, overall size, leg length and body shape remain constant.
season is from August 15 to December 15. This year as I write this article on August 22, the migra tion is on, a bit earlier than some years.

migration and yet there is a great deal yet to learn. In the spring, the major trigger for birds to move north is gonad (sex organ) enlargement and releasing hormones that trigger movement north. That is coupled with length of day, tempera ture, and depending on the species, open water, and insect populations before migration is triggered.

So get out there, find a good spot to sit, be pa tient (I’m not really good at that), and the birds will usually come to you. It’s a great time to photograph birds as well.
Fall migration is triggered by length of day, available food, and weather patterns that have sustained winds blowing south coupled with temperatures. Both spring and fall migration triggers are complex and not well understood. Most migrants fly at night to avoid predators and are guided by the magnetic fields of the earth core and constellations.

The Hamilton football team beat Dillon 34-7 on Friday, Sept. 2nd. Hamil ton’s running game and stout defense proved to be the difference. Hamilton rushed for 338 yards as a team, with Andrew Frederick leading the way with 168 yards. Quarterback Tyson Bauder rushed for four touchdowns and 162 yards, and also threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Eli Taylor. Taylor led Hamilton’s receivers with seven catches for 63 yards. Hamilton is 2-0 on the season and hosts Frenchtown on Friday, Sept. 9th at 7 p.m.
When asked later what he liked about his experience, Grazzani said, “My favorite aspect about being an exchange student is to experience a new type of life and culture with new people and have the opportunity to play basketball at a higher level than before.”“I’veplayed basketball in Italy for five years,” said Grazzani. “This is my sixth year in a club, because in my country school and sports are separate programs.” Grazzani usually exhibits a positive attitude and it wasn’t surprising to hear his response when asked what he liked most about his team and experience thus far. “I love how we support each other on our team. Darby head coach Krystal Smith said, “Ball movement, defense, and hustle are what helped us pull the win against Victor.” This seemed to be a good representation of Darby’s success against the Pirates. The Tigers did a good job of being patient in their offensive movements and took high percentage shots at the basket. When asked what their week of practice looked like leading up to this matchup and what they anticipated, Coach Smith said, “We always know that a rival game can go any way, so our biggest advice was to keep our head in the game, play our game and hustle and work together and they definitely worked together! And with a little press the whole game we wanted to slow them down and try taking advantage of a few mistakes.”

It’s been a while since the Florence Falcons football team played a close game. That was the case on Friday, Sept. 2nd in Townsend. It took a late Patrick Duchien 41-yard touchdown run to seal the 34-31 road victory against a tough Townsend squad. Duchien rushed for 186 yards and two TD’s and passed for 242 yards and two TD’s. Tyler Abbott had five catches for 90 yards including a 45-yard TD catch. Will Wagner caught a 38-yard TD pass as well. Colton Rice had a 10-yard TD run and accounted for 2 sacks and 4 tackles for a loss on defense. Trapper Oster had two interceptions for the Falcon defense. The slip-strike trick
Finally, when you do get the rise, slip-strike.
If my fly on the water is not moving in synch with the bubbles of a foam line or debris on the water, I’ll first re-tip with a longer section of tippet, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll go down a half-size. I might start with 30” or so of 5.5X and a #18 fly, and go 36” if needed. After that I’ll step down to 6X.
Can’t see the fly on the water? Use a small dot of strike indicator putty on the tippet knot. Strike at every rise
Form a loop between the tip of your index finger and thumb-tip on your rod hand. Press the thumb and finger together – hard. The line runs through this loop as you feed and mend into your drift.
Then, when you raise the rod to strike, don’t tighten your finger against the rod handle! Let the line slip as you raise the rod! When the line begins to run, don’t panic. You’ve just hooked a fish on a trico.

The trick here, and I’ve been using it since I was forty or so, is to get the magnification you need and useTheseit. days I use Flip Focals, 2.5 power magnifiers that attach perma nently to the brim of my fishing hat. They make the eye of a #20 fly look like a #8, 6X tippet look like leader butt, and the sworls of my fingers to look like a topo map.
Practice the technique first – don’t wait until you need it.

If I’m on a #20 to start with, I match that with 30” of 6X – and go longer and finer from there.

Second trick, when fishing tricos, think tippet. Don’t hesitate to go finer when you have to. Fine-tune your tippet to the fly and fishing conditions in front of you.
Tricos typically hatch late evening, not a big deal for most anglers and a moot point when the best water to fish them is on hoot-owl restriction. Tricos are most abundant on those long, slow, flat stretches of big water – not the broken water in the upper reaches of most rivers or their feeder streams, although the occur there too. Jan and I visited friends who were camped on the East Fork of the Bitterroot just a few days ago. It was a social visit, BBQ and folding chairs, good conversation, the whole bit. The fishing was incidental.
That was it. There were no other rising fish. There were, however, some very small and very dark hatching mayflies breaking the surface, at times making a small swarm, and flying off. Hatching tricos.
After dinner around sundown I went to the riv er to fish. The sun was

I was seeing a hatch of tricos –short for tricorythodes if you’re into the Latin – those itty-bitty black-bod ied bugs that can be a fun challenge, if you’re prepared for them, or give you fits if you’re not. That evening I chose to forego the fit I could have had, and continued to fish the Caddis Variant, if nothing else as an opportunity to practice some long-neglected casting and line handling techniques.

The leader of the expedition certainly recognized her value to the Corps, as well as the value of York, the lone black man in the group. By the time they reached the Pacific and had to make the critical decision about whether to camp north or south of the river’s mouth, both York and Sacagawea were given a vote. It would be a long time before the United States government would allow other women and Black people to do the same.

At least a third of this book passes before there’s even a whiff of crime, in favor of dog show and bridge plotlines and character introduction. The murder itself feels almost like a footnote or a minor faux pas once it finally appears, and it’s only discussed in terms relative to the people in the bridge club, as if no one else in Connecticut could’ve been the killer.

safety. The Mill Lake Fire was discov ered by air patrol and Willow Moun tain Fire Lookout on August 29th and was caused by lightning from strong movedderstormsthunthatthrough the Bitterroot Valley. The fire is burning in very steep, rugged, and inaccessible terrain with large boulder fields, and a heavy component of dead standing timber (snags). Due to the difficult terrain and no land ing locations for a helicopter, the fire is not currently staffed. The terrain and the presence of snag trees limits the ability to safely place firefighters directly on the fire at this time; howev er, helicopters have been conducting water bucket drops on the fire since it was discovered. No structures or in frastructure are currently threatened by the Mill Lake Fire.

Meanwhile, in Washington, some of your colleagues are busy NOT trying to fix the things that need fixing, but instead are trying to bust up Big Tech with S2992, written by Sens. Amy Klobuchar of MN and Chuck Grassley of IA. Breaking up some of our most successful companies and biggest employers won’t reduce gas prices or inflation. In fact, it could raise prices for consumers, reduce choices, and eliminate a lot of services we all take for granted... by giving huge new power over our economy to progressives at the Federal Trade Commission. OUR constituents are YOUR constituents, too. Please help us out by opposing S2992 and making Congress focus on the things that matter NOW!
