One group of volunteers floated eight miles of river and could only man age to find one nickel-sized piece of litter,” said Ocañas. In 2017 the Water Forum started the Clean Up All Year pro gram, sponsored by Bitterroot Disposal, which provides re-usable river cleanup bags to river recreationists at local businesses, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks fishing access sites, and city parks across the valley. Each year 5,000 of these bags are taken and used to contain trash and clean up litter from our Bitter rootDougRiver.Nelson, River Clean Up volunteer, said, “Now I know a lot of the old timers will tell you the trash hauling used to be much better in past years. And they’re probably right… There used to be plenty more. I suppose we have organizations like the Bitter Root Water Forum to thank for the popularity of Clean Up and for the decrease of trash in our rivers. Back to school in fullness
Tiff’s jacket. All of his clothes were completely drenched,” she says, further explaining how they were able to clothe him completely free of charge.
For my family, the beginning of school always signifies fullness. Our home swells with bags from our backto-school shopping and we set up organizational systems for the many papers and projects that will begin flowing through our door. Supply lists and syllabuses stack on surfaces, sig nifying the abundance of new oppor tunities and memories to be made. But for me back to school also signifies an emptying. I was thinking of this as I cleaned out my car from our most recent excursion to the river. I plucked snack wrappers from the trunk, left there after we devoured granola bars I brought for a day spent in the sun. I foraged for empty Pop Tart wrappers that made their way under the seat after my kids scarfed their break fasts on the way to camp. Discarded water bottles, ball caps, and sunscreen spray cans collected on the floor board like the dregs of a satisfying meal. These are the remains of a summer wellAlived.handheld vacuum ridded my car of the beach sand that filled every available crevice. I shook out and folded up the blankets we swaddled ourselves in when the sun dipped below the mountains and the temperature dropped 10 degrees. I will return the dozens of river rocks my daughter collected this summer to their rightful place in the Bitterroot River rather than let them clut ter every countertop in my home.Ifound that my car and home could be purged, but nothing will sweep away the memories we made. This is the summer my 10-yearold son discovered a love of flying. He even got to go up in the air with a pilot through the Young Eagles program at Missoula International Airport. This summer my daughter turned 8 and found she loves acting. This summer we visited the San Juan Islands for my husband’s 40thAmbirthday.Iready to say goodbye to sum mer and the days that stretch almost endlessly? Maybe. I’m looking forward to a crisp fall breeze, but I’ll miss our habit of finding some water to be near when the late afternoon heat makes our house unbearable. Yes, I’m look ing forward to using my oven to bake again, but I’ll miss sandwiches hastily eaten on our way to a new hiking trail. Okay, I admit I’m ready to not have to slather my kids with sunscreen every time they step outside, but I also appreciate that we can stretch out our bath days with so many trips to the lake or river. As long as they’re in water,Thisright?school year, we’re starting with fullness. Full backpacks, full hearts, and a full bank of lovely mem ories from summer 2022.
People who are aware of The Commod tend to consider it a valuable part of the community fabric, and keep in their thoughts and actions for years. As an example, DJ Sher wood at Spice of Life was kind enough to pay the registration fee for The Commod to participate in Daly Days. The Commod also receives donations, and is hoping to get enough to have a booth at the Ravalli County Fair. Most of the dona tions that come to The Commod are in the form of durable goods, how ever, and there is very little limit as to what they can accept. They do not accept furniture, elec tronics, videos or build ing supplies. They are happy to answer people’s questions if there is any confusion, but ultimately are ready to accept any thing that people could need to put them back on their feet.

“He walked out of here and he was thanking us like there was no tomor row,” she says. “He was in tears when he left.” These are only a few examples of the tremen dous acts of service that The Commod performs for the community as a part of their non-profit mandate. Still, their location far re moved from the commer cial corridors and immedi ately adjacent to a church do tend to confuse some. Mosbrucker says that she knows they could garner more attention if they were to relocate to another part of town, but says, “This is who we are. This is where our roots are and this is where we want to stay. If we moved out onto Hwy 93, I think we’d be trying to keep up with the Joneses.”

News from Bitterroot Valley Board of Realtors
In 1988 a group of real estate licensees in the Bitterroot Valley a bold move to charter the Bitterroot Valley Board of Realtors. By taking this step, they were telling lic and their own members this group belonged to the National Asso ciation of Realtors. By doing so, they publicly announced their adherence to a Code of Ethics. According to Sharon Dedmon, president of the Bitterroot Valley Board of Realtors, this is what separates Realtors from licensees.“Those pioneers set the stage for the vibrant group of over 230 real estate industry professionals that comprise the current membership of the Bitterroot Valley Board of Realtors in 2022,” said Dedmon, who was also named BVBOR Realtor of the Year for 2022. “Our membership also includes Realtor member appraisers and other industry related affiliate partners.” Dedmon said the Board’s mission is three-fold. Their first goal is to bring together individuals in the industry who subscribe to the NAR Code of Ethics and high standards of profes sional conduct and to provide them the opportunity to grow professionally

Dedmon said the American dream of owning a home is alive and well in the Bitterroot Valley. “Our goal is to make sure future generations can achieve that dream,” said Dedmon. “Our members have a seat at the table for Affordable Housing Initiatives and the Governor’s Task Force.” Dedmon said that their members are committed to maintaining the natural beauty of the Valley while al lowing for the growth that the market demands in a manner that is fair to landowners. She said the Bitterroot Valley Board of Realtors is constantly working to build better communities. AND FIRE BE HAVIORMonday afternoon and eve ning brought scattered showers and thunderstorms. Gusty erratic outflow winds, lightning, and brief heavy rainfall accompanied the thunderstorms and Forest Ser vice personnel were watching for resulting new fire ignitions where fuels are receptive. Fire behavior on the Fuse Lake Fire is minimal with smoldering. Fire behavior on the Hog Trough Fire was moder ate with creeping, smoldering and some single tree torching.
The two fires are 1705 combined acres and containment of the Fuse Lake Fire is now 75%. The fires are under the command of Shane Mar tin’s Central Montana T3 Team. Combined Resources: Person nel: 181 Engines: 2 Helicopters: 3 Crews:CURRENT4 STATUS Fire behavior on the Hog Trough Fire was minimal on Sun day due to cooler temperatures, scattered precipitation, and higher humidity levels. Crews are steer ing the fire to the south and east, through previously burned areas where there are fewer values at risk. There will be minimal to no perimeter growth to the north and northwest.OnMonday on the southwest flank of the Hog Trough Fire, crews were brushing the Weasel Creek Trail to clear flammable materials. A dozer was set to begin improving the 1135 Road, north of the Wea sel Creek Trail, as a contingency line to stop fire progression to the north. To the southeast, crews built line around and held a slop-over fire that crossed of the Signal Rock Trail on Sunday. On Monday, crews were conducting planned firing operations off of the Signal Rock Trail, routing the fire slowly back down the hill as a means to widen the fuel break in a safe and controlled manner, halt wildfire progression to the north, and prevent more slop-over fires from occurring. When completed, the fireline along the Signal Rock Trail will tie into the 5071 Road at a wet riparian area.

Water in the ditch was started up again on Saturday at 6 p.m. but it takes three full days to get water to the end. As of Monday afternoon it was just reaching the Burnt Fork area east of Stevensville.“Peopleneed to be patient,” said Crowley. “It takes a lot of time to build the ditch up. “Despite our best efforts there will not be enough contract water to keep Bell Crossing at our initial target of 250-275 cfs. We will have to readjust our expectations and try to hold 200 cfs at Bell Cross ing,” said Schock. This is bad news for the fish, recreational floaters and the Schockirrigators.saidwhat’s driving it all is this long hot summer. He said temperatures have been running 10-15 degrees above normal with plenty of hot winds and that the latest little bit of rain was the first rain in 25 to 26 days. On August 17, reservoir inflows were at 77.6 cfs. Outflows were increased from 392 cfs to 421 cfs, that is a 29 cfs increase. The elevation of the reservoir was at 4,708.71 feet, down from 92.6 cfs on August 6. Storage volume was 28,150 acre feet, having dropped about 6,859 feet since August 6. Schock said that a gradual reduction in the outflow from the reservoir would begin this week. He said the river levels will be kept as high as possible for as long as possible. The initial release reductions will be kept as small as possible, but the subsequent reductions will gradually increase in size and will be dependent upon how much further the reservoir inflows drop off, and the reservoir levels. Unfortunately, there is the very real possibility that the con tract water may be exhausted by mid-September, said Schock. It all depends upon the weather at this point, he “Sorry, said.Iwish there was better news, but Mother Nature has not been very cooperative this year. Hopefully, September will bring cooler temperatures and some good rain,” said Schock. The football teams from Class B Florence and Class A Hamilton have a lot in common. Both went undefeat ed last year, both won state titles last year, both lost key players and return key players, and both are ready to put 2021 behind them and focus on the 2022Hamilton’sseason. head coach Bryce Carver is in his ninth year with the program and his sixth year as head coach. When asked about defending the state title, Carver said, “We don’t like to think of it in terms of defending a state championship. Rather, we take the attitude that it’s time to go chase another one!” “We had a great preseason, and a great turnout with 62 kids coming out. The kids are working hard and coming into form,” said Carver. “Two-a-days were challenging because of the heat. In my nine years coaching at Hamilton this has been the hottest by far.” To alleviate the effects of the heat Hamil ton practiced early in the morning and later at Muchnight.like Hamilton, Florence also wants to focus on 2022. Florence head Pat Duchien said, “We chal lenged this year’s team to not ride on the coattails of last year’s team. They need to create their own identity for 2022.”“We have had a great fall camp,” said Duchien. “We have a current roster of 55 kids, which is a lot for a Class B school. The boys have been working hard and we’re rounding into shape. Relentless is the key word for this group. In all things we want to be ‘relentless’.”TheHamilton Broncs lost some key players from last year’s team, but are returning eight start ers. “We bring back a lot of experience,” said Carver, “a lot of guys who have been state champions, a lot of guys who were all-state and all-con ference last year.” Key returning all-state players from last year include Eli Taylor, Andrew Burrows, Lucas Lant, Derrick Saltzman, and Liam O’Connell.Onebig position to fill in is quarter back. Junior Tyson Bauder is set to be this year’s starter, replacing all-state quarterback Tyson Rostad from last year. Bauder was a second team mentioncornerall-conferenceandhonorablereceiverlast year. He also finished 4th at state last spring in the 100-meter dash. “He has plenty of in-game experience and is getting more comfortable every day at quarterback,” said Carver. The Florence Falcons also lost key players from last year’s team, but they have a solid foundation to build on. “We definitely have some big holes to fill,” said Duchien, “but the kids are working hard and we’re getting the gaps filled with new faces. We have a large group of seniors and juniors who will lead this team.” Two key returning players are all-state quarterback Pat Duchien Jr. and all-state defensive end Colten DuchienRice.hashigh praise for his coaching staff. “Really, I’m in more of a manager role, the other coaches are what make this whole thing run,” said Duchien. “They put in mass amounts of effort and time. They’re always working on something to make the kids better. They’re tremendous and are the reason for our success!” Carver is also quick to give credit to his coaching staff for the team’s suc cess. “We have an excellent coaching staff with years and years of experi ence. It definitely makes my life easier to have such a great staff.”

At 49-47 with 8 seconds left on the clock, the freshman, who had several minutes in the JV game earlier in the day, was about to give her team the three-point advantage.
“I was a proud, proud coach, they channeled a great amount of emotion,” said Heather Berry, head coach of the Darby Tigers, following their dramatic win over valley rival Victor, 51-47. Going into Friday’s game the Lady Tigers had struggled in their first game against the Pirates, but it was a different story this weekend. Coach Berry aimed at clarifying expectations and focusing her athletes on what they could control.TheLady Pirates controlled the game, much like they did in the first matchup, until late in the fourth quarter. With a minute-forty remaining in the game it was 4143 Pirates and Victor senior Bella Schicilone forced a foul driving the lane and found herself at the foul line with the hope of going up by four. She nailed the first one, 4144, then missed the second. With the ball back, Lady Tiger number 12 Samantha Shull launched up a jumper that banked in. Now in transition racing down the floor, Schicilone drove hard in the paint and drew another foul with the opportunity to extend the Pirate lead. After missing the first, she hit the second, 43-45 Pirates. Then Lady Tigers inbounded the ball rushing down with 47 seconds remaining when freshman Petra Mustafa rebounded the long shot and banked in a basket with a foul sending her

Rosenthal said the event began about 10 years ago, at the direction of the valley coaches. ly been somewhat of a rekindling of the wrestling community in Florence. “As far as the Florence team’s performance, I couldn’t be more pleased,” said Rosenthal. “We’re in a bit of a rebuilding year with a new coaching staff and a renewed commitment to wrestling from the Florence School Administration and School Board. We will have a school-sponsored Middle School Program beginning this year and will be moving into our new dedicated Wrestling Room in the next couple of weeks. The future of wrestling in Florence is looking performancebright.”thisseason, said, “Our kids have been working hard, are in great shape, focused, and having fun. We may means to be ‘Falcon Tough.’” Rosenthal, who has been instrumental in the Florence wrestling world for some time, in both the high school and Little Guy programs, is grateful for his coaching “Josh Schreoder and I have been working together for several years with the Little Guy program,” said Rosenthal. “This year, however, we have Cody Sutton and Kody Davidson, two former Falcon wrestlers that have brought some ‘old school Falcon Toughness’ to the mix and have had a huge impact on what we’ve been able to achieve this year.”The Falcons showed up and performed at “The Root” but at the end of the day were bested by Matt Davis and his crew of wrestlers from opponents. Kanyon Stoker at Jonny Williams pinned Jett Murray of Florence in 1:57. For Coach Davis, “Luke Nuttal at 113 beating John Post that was a huge one. That match I figured could go eitherThatway.”match was important for the Blue Devil victory on the day. The Falcon wrestlers are mostly in the upper-weight classes and dominated in those areas, whereas the Blue Devils won many of the matches in the lower weight classes which ultimately led them to 99 points and first place. by Thomas Spencer

Hamilton, Florence look to repeat state titles by Scott Sacry Bitterroot Valley High School sports will be in full swing this week end. Between Darby, Hamilton, Corvallis, Victor, Stevensville, and Florence, there are 32 varsity teams, which include six football teams, six volleyball teams, six cheer squads, five cross country teams, three girls soccer teams, three boys soccer teams, and three golf teams, and that’s not count ing all the JV, Freshman, and middle school teams. Needless to say, there are a lot of school sports going on in the next couple of months. Student athletes, parents, volunteers, referees, and coaches have dedicated a lot of time and effort to these activities. Our communities are better because of this, so win or lose, get out there and show your support! Here’s a breakdown of the high school sports activities for the upcom ing weekend. Times may be subject to change.

by Thomas Spencer Drawing together all the wrestlers in the valley over the weekend Florence hosted the 2022 Mike McChesney Battle of the ‘Root. And it was once again Corvallis with 99 points that took home the trophy this year, bringing pride and honor to that program. Florence came within striking distance at 70 team points followed by Hamilton at 53 and Stevensville at 47 total points. Besides the team rankings and scores, individual athletes were recognized by the competing schools’ coaches. Jason Davis from Corvallis, wrestling at 138, was recognized as the “Bitterroot Valley Outstanding Wrestler.” Davis pinned Dillon Janes in 2:45. The lone Florence senior, wrestling at 205, was recognized as the Bitterroot Valley Wrestling Ambassador, won by pin in his match earlier in the day against Cadogan Wheat of Hamilton.ForFlorence Head Coach Skip Rosenthal, the event is unique in a variety of ways. He said, “The ‘Root is really a special event. In addition to bragging rights, it is one of the rare opportunities Florence gets a chance to wrestle against the other Bitterroot Valley teams since Florence is B/C and Hamilton, Corvallis, and Stevensville are A. It is also the only time where it is just our local teams. Many of our families know each other, have battled in earlier generations, and actually get a chance to connect at this event.”

Townsend and Smith both had stellar 4th quarters, each posting 8 and Reed had 6 in that quarter.“Until the game is over, my only thoughts are to keep putting the ball in the basket, hustle back, play hard defense, and outwork the opponent,” said Smith. “This group of boys never quit, so if we are behind or ahead, it’s not over until the buzzer rings.”
Hamilton will start the season at Corvallis on Thursday, August 25th at 7 p.m. “Corvallis has a lot of guys com ing back and a great coaching staff, so it will be a challenge,’’ said Carver. Florence will play Manhattan on Friday, August 26th at 7 p.m. at Wash ington Grizzly Stadium in Missoula. “Manhattan has a new head coach, so we have to be prepared for anything. Manhattan kids are always tough, so we better be ready,” said Duchien.

The YellowjacketsFightingtook on the Broncs of Frenchtown on Saturday in Stevensville. The Yellowjackets came out really strong in the first quarter, beating some tough defensive pressure numerous times and capitalizing on strong drives to the basket and open looks from the floor. The first quarter ended 13-14 Frenchtown where Kellan Beller had 8 in that quarter and was absolutely everywhere. Beller worked strongly defensively and played really strong to the basket in the first quarter. The second and third quarter got away from the Yellowjackets, who gave up 36 points in that time and only answered with 15 of their own. However, the boys from Stevi did hold the Broncs to 9 squad and in a sea of junior boys, Lorenzo Grazzani stood out as the team’s only senior. There are things you can do before your fly hits the water to give yourself an edge. Those edges, one here, one there, translate into a fish here, a fish there. Taken together, these edges can make the difference between a slow and a memora ble day. The biggest edge you can give yourself is to be sure of your watchleader:forany sign of drag and repair the tippet to get rid of it. Watch for shadow and proximity of the line to the fly; make sure the leader is long enough to keep the line shadow well away from the fish. Next biggest? Pinch the barb and keep the hook sharp. Get a hook hone and develop the habit of using it constantly. A barbless and sharp hook penetrates to the bend on the hook-set and your ratio of fish caught will jump up dramatically.Alittleedgethat can make a big difference? Don’t get any floatant on the bend of your dry fly hook. Not always, but sometimes, usually at the wrong time, the silicone floatant will work too well – and cause the fly to float on its side, resulting in a refusal instead of a take. And while we’re at it, most para chute style dry flies are tied to have an overload of hackle on the fly’s left side. Some parachutes are not tied that way –but those that are tend, every fifth or maybe every other cast, to land on their side. If you see that happen, go to work with your clipper – you want your parachute to have a 50/50 balance of hackle on the hook’s left and right side, with no hackle extending below the water line.As you keep these edges in mind and invest a little extra time in them, the returns on that investment will show dramatically in fish caught. And, there’s a certain satisfaction that comes when that nice fish takes your fly because you figured it out, and did something right. Practice your casting Another edge, a big one, that you can give yourself before you hit the stream is to practice your casting. It’s fun to practice casting. Watch a video, maybe by Steve Rajeff, his brother Tim, Joan Wulff, or Doug Swisher. Pick a model, and imitate it. The videos are fun to watch. Practice for good form (watch the loop – if the loop is right, the cast is right) and practice for accuracy at varying distances out to fifty feet. Tea cup accuracy with a rod’s length of line develops good habits that will bring you fish. Slinging it out there as far as you can usually goes south. Practice making the fly settle on the water as lightly as a natural insect would. Accuracy and delicacy produce fish. Shadows You’re on the stream – your casting is in reasonably good shape, and you have a notion of where you want to place your cast. Now, take a look at the sun angle: where can you position yourself where your shadow and the rod’s shadow will not be visible to the fish? Try to develop a sixth sense for shadows, especially line shadow at the angle at which it will penetrate under the surface, into the trout’s domain. Cast so the line shadow angles away from the fish instead of toward the Tofish.a trout, shadows mean death. Shadows warn trout of danger from kingfishers, ospreys, eagles, and fly fishers. The delicate pickup Once the cast is on the water, fish it out. You can’t just delete a bad cast the way you can a bad entry on a computer. Yanking the fly, and lead er, and line off the water because the cast isn’t right must terrify a trout. The commotion, with spray flying everywhere, is totally unnatural. Their instinct is to hide and cool it for a while. Fish the cast out – and when it is beyond the area where the fish hold, or when it begins to drag uncontrollably, makeup to three slow, deliberate, arm-length strips and then continue that strip ping motion into a gentle back-cast. The object is to make the line and fly “swim” off the water and into the air, away from the Thefish.only thing the trout should know about your presence is your fly on the water. Show them that fly, again and again without spooking them, and they might eat it.
