County health officer releases COVID statement On Thursday, August 12, the Ravalli County Public Health Department released an update on the COVID-19 situation from County Health Officer Carol Calderwood, M.D. “Ravalli County Public Health (RCPH) expects a continued secondary COVID spike as schools resume and as other activities continue to open,” wrote Calderwood. “However, we believe our community is in a much better situation than this time last year. We have partial community immunity, better testing and treatments, and lower percentages of serious illness and death. Our medical facilities have extremely solid plans in place.” Calderwood also wrote that, “RCPH and other county leaders desire nothing more than continued movement toward normalcy, for the sake of mental and economic health. To this end, we ask each person to do as much as they each can to limit spread of communicable diseases this fall and winter. CDC guidance for K-12 is based on current scientific evidence and lessons learned from schools implementing COVID-19 prevention strategies. Public Health believes these guidelines to be a best practice for the nation as a whole and recommends Ravalli County residents, at a minimum, follow the Board of Health recommendations: “1. Everyone wash their hands often; 2. If an Employee, Teacher or Student is sick, stay home; 3. It is the personal choice of Parent(s), Students, Teachers and Employees to wear a mask or not; and 4. Encourage tolerance and respect of personal choices. See COVID, page 15
West Fork river access project to begin Limited parking and short delays may impact boaters The Bitterroot National Forest announced today that work will begin next week on the West Fork River Improvement Project at the West Fork boat launch site. The project which will enhance recreation opportunities and provide education on resource conservation was approved and funded earlier this year by the Ravalli County Resource Advisory Committee (RAC). The West Fork River access site and boat launch is located just downstream from the West Fork Ranger Station and is a popular site for floaters, fishermen and women, and visitors wanting to enjoy the beauty of the river. Currently, the site includes an outhouse, boat ramp, and parking area. Visitors have also created trails that provide river access upstream and downstream of the boat launch. The project is a partnership between Bitterroot Trout Unlimited, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and the Forest Service. Beginning next week, volunteers will See WEST FORK, page 15

Howell authors book on battle over Mitchell Slough Michael Howell, former publisher of the Bitterroot Star, has written a book titled “Saving the Mitchell” which has just been released by Stoneydale Press of Stevensville. The non-fiction book was authored by Howell, who for the past 35 years worked as the publisher of the Bitterroot Star located in Stevensville. Howell spent 10 of those years in a legal battle to save a branch of the Bitterroot River from privatization by a group of wealthy landowners who wanted it for their own exclusive fishing paradise. The Mitchell Slough, originally known as the Right Fork of the St. Mary’s Fork of the Bitterroot River, is a 16-mile-long
spring-fed stretch of the Bitterroot River that meanders from just north of Corvallis to just south of Stevensville. In the early 1990’s two young men, who had fished the waters of the Mitchell all their lives, decided to test Montana’s Stream Access Law by fishing in this area that had been closed to the public by landowners who put up barbed wire and “No Trespassing” signs along its banks. Howell got involved when the two men came to him at his newspaper office and asked for some publicity about the issue. Howell wrote some articles about an incident in which the two were cited for trespassing and later See MITCHELL, page 6
