The ride of a lifetime – Chambers to compete in national finals rodeo
By Jean Schurman
Although he didn’t really plan for the year he’s had, Bridger Chambers of Stevensville has had the ride of a lifetime this past year. And it’s not over yet. The lanky 6’6” cowboy was probably best known in the Bitterroot for many years for his skills on the basketball court but rodeo was always on his mind. He began riding at a young age and, along with his brother Boone, competed in the Ravalli County Junior Rodeo rodeos. He went on to compete in high school rodeo and then was on the rodeo team at both UM and UM Western. (He also played basketball there while rodeoing and is the only known basketball player/rodeo cowboy to compete in the NAIA Men’s National basketball tournament and the College National Finals in
the same year.) During high school and college, Chambers focused more on tie down roping and team roping. It wasn’t until he was in college that he got the bug to compete in steer wrestling; after all, who, in their right mind, would want to jump off a perfectly good horse running full steam onto the back of a steer? Chambers did and found he was pretty good at it. “Even when I was young, I thought about rodeo,” he said. “The National Finals Rodeo was the only time we got to stay up late to watch television.” Well, Chambers will be staying up late for the next couple of weeks. He is one of the top 15 steer wrestlers in the world and will be competing at the National Finals Rodeo in Las See CHAMBERS, page A14
Bridger Chambers will be competing at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas from December 6 to December 15. He is No. 8 in the steer wrestling and has been given the nickname ‘The Bearded Beast’ and will wear the back number #86.
Victor gets new fire hall
By Michael Howell
After struggling diligently for several years to either remodel the old fire hall in downtown Victor or move to a new one, the efforts finally made it over the hilltop and have concluded in what could accurately be described as an avalanche of generosity. Several volunteers were on hand last Friday to start the preliminary work that could get the fire department into the new facility, located south of town on Meridian Road, by the beginning of the new year. According to Victor Fire Chief Scott Hackett, the efforts really began back in 2009 when the fire department applied for a grant for a “shovel ready” project but didn’t get it. However,
having recognized the need, they decided to start putting money aside for some sort of remodel. About a year ago, according to Hackett, they had accumulated enough in the Capital Improvement Fund to get serious about a remodel project and put it out to the public. “The public response has been tremendous,” said Roylene Gaul, who worked hard on raising funds for the project. In the meantime, the department received an offer from a local businessman to sell them his large manufacturing facility sitting on six acres of land just south of town for less than its appraised value. Hackett said that they looked at three other properties in Victor and decided that this one was the best fit for their needs. He
said it was hard to move outside of town but that the old fire hall was very poorly situated right across from the town park where people recreate and children play. He said to get property in town they were looking at $1-to-$1.5 million. For $400,000 they were getting a facility that would need minimal work to accommodate the fire department with six acres for future expansion. The inside is already divided into one third office space and two-thirds open space which suits the department’s needs well, according to Hackett. Gaul put the fundraising efforts into overdrive and you should see her smile when she talks about the results. She was See VICTOR, page A2
Stevensville receives report on bullying, harassment complaint By Michael Howell
The Town of Stevensville recently received the results of an investigation into a complaint filed by Town Clerk Audree Tribbensee alleging bullying, harassment, and creation of a hostile work environment by members of the Town Council and former mayor Jim Crews. Tribbensee’s complaint was filed with Mayor Brandon Dewey on October 4, 2018 and Malin Stearns Johnson from the Missoula-based law firm Johnson and Johnson Law, was hired to conduct an independent investigation of the allegations. Mayor Dewey received the report on November 16 and the contents of the report will be discussed at a special council meeting set for Thursday, December 6 at 7 p.m. at
town hall. As part of her investigation, Johnson interviewed Town Clerk Audrey Tribbensee, Council President Bob Michalson, Mayor Brandon Dewey, Utility Clerk Denise Philley, Police Clerk Jenelle Berthoud, Treasurer April Van Tassel, Council members Robin Holcomb and Stacie Barker and Town Attorney Brian West. Johnson notes that in the course of her investigation additional allegations of retaliation were received, enlarging the scope of the investigation. She also notes in the report that during the investigation, “it also became clear that the Town faced problems with communication, environment, and human resource policies,” and that these would be addressed as well. In summation, Johnson
found that the allegations of bullying against the three Town Council members and Crews were “not sustained,” primarily because the activities of bullying and harassment, although defined in the Town’s Personnel Policy Manual and training in the issue is prescribed, the defined activity is not explicitly prohibited. “Ms. Tribbensee’s Complaint does not cite, and this investigator is not aware of, any legal prohibition against bullying. Ms. Tribbensee cites Wikipedia in her Complaint as stating that ‘workplace bullies often operate within the established rules and policies of their organization and their society.’ This is an accurate statement. The investigator is unaware
said Dewey, “and I told her that if it continued we would have to ban him from the page.” Dewey said that on Friday Mr. Barker barged into his office in a hostile manner and shouted at him. “He was leaning over my desk and shouting right into my face,” said Dewey.” He was saying that we couldn’t ban him from Facebook because he had a right to free speech. I told him that profanity was not allowed and he said that he could say [the F word] any time he wants and told me if I had anything to say I should say it
to him and not to his wife.” Three clerks were in the office when it happened and witnessed the event. One went to the back office to get Police Chief James Marble, but Barker left immediately after his short outburst and was already gone by the time Marble showed up in the front office. The clerks were shocked and upset by what they had witnessed. Dewey said that he has not yet decided what action to take about the event but that the town’s attorney was aware of what transpired.

According to Stevensville Mayor Brandon Dewey, he was verbally assaulted in his office last Friday by Matt Barker, husband of Council member Stacie Barker. Dewey said that he had spoken to Ms. Barker the evening before about having to remove some comments placed on the town’s Facebook page by her husband. He said he told her that her husband was entitled to his opinion, but that profanity is just not allowed. “I wanted her to be aware,”
