Although the handwriting is on the wall, you might say, marking the coming shutdown of the Ravalli County Recycling Center with closing tentatively set for the end of the year, in the meantime the facility is still open. “We voted to stay open until December 31 if we could,” said Board President Janice Lee. “But should the markets fail severely, or our vehicles fail, or the property sells, we may have to close sooner. Our goal is to stay open at least until the end of the year if we can.”

What they are up against, according to board member Chip Britting, is “ancient equipment, the potential sale of the property, and markets that have gone south.” Cardboard recycling is twothirds of the non-profit company’s volume of business. But they have been hamstrung lately by a disabled packing truck. Although it was tough to diagnose, the problem has recently been identified, but the solution would be costly and involve more downtime. Instead they are going to run the truck on half a tank of gas at a time to avoid the issue.

Then there is the potential sale of the property on which the facility is located. The non-profit has rented the property for the last six years at “a very reasonable rate.” But it was put up for sale this year and some people are looking at it, according to Britting. If the property sells they will have only 60 days to move out, he said. Britting described the potential sale of the property as “a big sword hanging over our head. We have nowhere to go.” And then there is the market

chance to look at the upgrades the Post has made to Post home at 322 S. 2nd in this last year, including a new roof, paint, hardscape outside, and a new, rust proof flag pole. The Post was chartered in 1919 and given the name ‘Ravalli’ Post because it covered all of the county at that time. The first commander was TW Lockwood. For many years, a new commander was selected each year but in the recent past, the commanders have held

their positions for several years. The current commander is Ruth Cook who is a Vietnam veteran, and the Post’s first female commander. The event on Saturday will be a trip back in history with uniforms from World War I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the Middle East conflicts on display. Of special interest are

On Saturday, October 26, the American Legion Post #47 will celebrate 100 years of service and camaraderie for veterans from World War I to the Middle East conflicts of the last few years. Connie Johnson, Montana School Nurse of the Year. “There are so many attributes that make Connie an incredible nurse, but I believe her greatest strengths are her patience, wisdom, calming demeanor, and professionalism…I unequivocally believe Stevensville Schools has the absolute best school nurse in the state (and country) and she is resoundingly qualified for this award.” – Lee Starck, K-5 Counselor. Johnson named Montana School Nurse of the Year

By Michael Howell

Stevensville School Nurse Connie Johnson was named the Montana School Nurse of the year for 2019-2020 by the Montana Association of School Nurses. The award was presented to Johnson at the MASN business meeting in Bozeman on October 17. Her award will also be acknowledged at the National Association of School Nurses 52nd Annual Con-

ference in Las Vegas this summer. In the letter to Jonson announcing the award, MASN President Erica Harp stated that the MASN Board received an overwhelming number of letters in support on Johnson’s behalf “that prove without a doubt that you are deserving of this award. Your nominators shared examples about your work in case management, education, wellness promotion, illness surveillance, and outstand-

ing leadership, which demonstrate that your nursing practice embodies the NASN 21st Century School Nursing Framework. Congratulations on your welldeserved award!” “I often say that I work with a team of outstanding professionals and with the best school nurse in the world,” stated Stevensville Primary School Principal See NURSE, page A3

Trout Unlimited recognizes columnists Bean and Stranahan

By Michael Howell

At the Bitterroot Trout Unlimited banquet last week, two local fishermen and writers Bill Bean and Chuck Stranahan each received a Golden Trout Award for their decades of writing about the fishing and the fisheries in the Bitterroot Valley. Bill Bean has been writing fishing related articles for the Ravalli Republic newspaper for over 20 years. Chuck Stranahan has been writing a column in the Bitterroot Star for many years as well. Both award winners were given two minutes for any comments they would care to make in

acceptance of the award. Bean said he doesn’t talk a lot and would not be taking his whole two minutes. “I will take a minute. I’m going to give the other minute to Chuck. He’s a good friend and he loves to talk and has many good things to say,” said Bean. He expressed thanks for the award and said he hoped to continue writing articles, “unless someone wants to step in and take over.” Stranahan said that he had three immediate reactions when he was first informed about receiving the award. First was, why him? He said last year FWP biologist Chris Clancy got the award “someone who totally deserved it,” said Stra-

nahan. “Why me?” Then, he said, he saw that Bill was also getting it. “Someone who is a past TU officer and who has helped put this banquet and auction on. I felt he deserved it.” “Then I thought, how can I speak in two minutes and say the things that I need to say?” First off, he said, “I cannot go on a rant about the need for single-hook-barbless-artificial lures on the West Fork,” to the sound of great applause. He thanked his wife and fishing partner Jan, his publishers Michael and Victoria Howell, and his good friends and fishing See AWARDS, page A3
