Liz Cook, President of the Stevensville Civic Club, is also the chair of this year’s Creamery Picnic, along with co-chair James Pickford. Cook and Pickford have been working hard to make sure this year’s picnic will be a major success. In addition to all the usual, time-honored activities, they have added some new kids’ games, a young entrepreneurs vendor fair, and have made improvements to the brew fest. The last two Creamery Picnics (2019 and 2021 - there wasn’t one in 2020 due to Covid), have included a street dance on Main Street in addition to the music at the Lewis & Clark Park stage. This was in response to repeated requests from Main Street businesses to once again have activities on Main Street. This year, Cook and Pickford

everyone happy and make the picnic the best it can be.” The kids’ games that have been added for this year are simple, easy to learn games with a targeted age of 5-12 years old, and the cost to participate will be minimal, said Pickford. He said that he “wanted to make sure that all children would be able to play.” He’s also added a watermelon eating contest. This year’s brew fest will offer commemorative glasses for $20 which includes the first beer. Additional beers are $5. Just as with the past two Picnics, people will be able to carry their beers throughout the Picnic venue, as long as they stay on the south side of the access road that runs Creamery Picnic set up and take down down the middle of the park. involves a lot of physical labor. The entire through the Creamery Picnic facebook event is funded through sponpage. sorships from local businesses, and the money raised through vendor fees and beer sales. The event is the Civic Club’s only major fundraiser, and the proceeds are used to advance the club’s mission, which is to improve the quality of life for residents of the greater Stevensville community. With the effort that Cook and Pickford are putting into the Creamery Picnic this year, it’s bound to be a huge success.

2022 Garden Party – A Celebration of Our Resilience By Maureen Wali, Civic Club board Member and Garden Party Chair
nesses and non-profits who stood at the ready to support us was long. There were doctors, nurses, medical staff and pharmacies. There were also firefighters and EMTs that unflinchingly stepped into harm’s way. There were many non-profits that helped out the residents and businesses through some very tough moments. And, just think of all of the supermarkets, restaurants and bakeries with many of them morphing into new images of themselves. They made life a little bit more palatable for those of us confined and easier for those of us who needed to continue to go about our daily responsibilities. Many have continued to practice online ordering and street side pickup and hopefully will come out of this successfully. It seemed an impossible task so it was decided to celebrate Stevensville. That means all of Stevensville, all the businesses, all
The last couple of years the Stevensville Civic Club had to make some uncomfortable decisions. One was canceling the Creamery Picnic in 2020 which also meant canceling the Garden Party. While we were able to have the Creamery Picnic last year, we decided to wait another summer for the Garden Party. When the Civic Club board okayed having the Garden Party, we started the process of nominations for Citizen of the Year as is always done. It then became very clear that we couldn’t decide how to choose. How could we pick just a few community members out of all the amazing people and businesses and organizations that supported us through two very difficult years? The list of organizations, busi-
the organizations who continued to operate. You did great! There were some heartbreaking situations and some amazing stories of support and resilience. The Stevensville Civic Club would like to lift all of you up in a celebration
of our community for this year’s Garden Party. We will also be opening the ‘Trout Spout’ splash pad for the first time at this gathering. Getting this completed was an astounding feat of looking to the future for our families. The Civic Club, in concert with Project 59870, raised an amazing amount of money and organized this project, sometimes having to rely on emails and teleconferencing. It was done right in the middle of all the challenges of covid, and now that persistence has paid off. Please join us the evening of August 4th at Lewis and Clark Park at 6:30 p.m. to mingle with friends, reacquaint and reach out. It’s a simple evening of cookies and lemonade to acknowledge each other in friendship and support. Spend some time together before Creamery Picnic weekend. Let’s celebrate our awesome community!

Fun for all ages at the new “Trout Spout” Splash Pad at Lewis & Clark Park in Stevensville.
Splash Pad to be open for Creamery Picnic “Trout Spout,” the splash pad that is being installed at Lewis & Clark Park in Stevensville, is set to be open during Creamery Picnic to help attendees of all ages cool off during the current heat wave. The splash pad has been in the works since 2019, when the Stevensville Civic Club settled on a splash pad as their major project based on community input. Joan Prather, a Civic Club board member at the time, agreed to chair the committee that was established for the project. Nearly three years later, the splash pad is done, and a ribbon cutting will be held on Thursday, August 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Lewis & Clark Park during the annual Garden Party. The committee was lucky to get Prather to take on the project. As the director of the Main Street

Ownership and supervision of the completed splash pad will be officially handed over to the Town of Stevensville, but the Civic Club and Project 59870 will continue to raise money for additional improvements and upgrades as needed. The splash pad is adjacent to the very-popular Bear Mountain Playground, another major park installation that was volunteer-driven. These two fun spaces are good examples of what can be accomplished when community members work together for the good of all.

The Creamery Picnic - How it all started Stevensville is a proud community with deep roots – the first permanent white settlement in Montana – and residents like to say this is where Montana began. The historic Creamery Picnic reportedly is the oldest ongoing community festival in Montana - following in the tradition of the town’s many firsts. It all began with a fire and evolved into a party that people have marked on their calendars for decades. Family and class reunions are planned around Creamery Picnic. The main parade on Saturday morning attracts swarms of people and the kids’ parade on Friday evening is particularly popular with the younger set along with large numbers of moms, dads and grandparents. From start to finish, Creamery Picnic is always a winner. The Creamery Picnic story began with the fire that destroyed
the Bitterroot Cooperative Creamery. The creamery provided a marketplace for dairy products produced by local dairies as well as jobs for a number of residents of the community. It was managed by John Howe who went on to be a successful businessman in both Stevensville and Hamilton. He eventually was renowned for his ice cream and other dairy products, but not until after he and the Bitterroot Cooperative Creamery suffered the losses of a devastating fire in 1911. “The flames started from a smokestack in the engine room, and the fire smoldered in the rafters between roof and ceiling for some time before it was discovered,” according to the book “Montana Genesis,” written by the Stevensville Historical Society. By the time the fire was discovered, it was out of control and beyond the

abilities of Howe and his employees to put out. “The town was alarmed, and every one who could absent himself from business left for the creamery,” the book related. “The hook-and-ladder truck arrived, bucket brigades were formed, and a determined effort was made to save the building. When it became apparent that the roof was about to cave in, the fighters turned their attention to saving the machinery and the butter stored in the refrigeration room.” Sixteen thousand pounds of butter were removed from the burning building, and also the big churn, the cream vats, and the ice cream-making equipment, the book said. “The latter consisted of a three gallon freezer that was turned by hand. The fire by this time had reached the west of the building, where the refrigeration
plant was located. The machinery was valuable, and the men succeeded in pulling down the frame walls and checking the fire just as it reached the ice house. There was no such thing as manufactured ice at the time; the building housed tons and tons of ice cut from nearby ponds and sloughs during the winter and stored in sawdust.” The damage from the fire included the total destruction of the main building, broken machinery and fittings, and the loss was hard on the community’s economy. Howe put out a call for help to rebuild the creamery and the citizens of the town rallied around to help. Construction began on July 1, 1911, and the creamery miraculously reopened for business on August 1. Howe had promised the community and the construction crew

Model trains - a Creamery Picnic tradition A model train display, built and maintained by the Bitterroot Valley Model Railroad Club and housed in the basement of the Kohl Building behind Valley Drug in Stevensville, has traditionally been open to the public on Creamery Picnic weekend. The trains will be running Friday night from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 12 noon to 3 p.m. The Bitterroot Valley Model Railroad Club was started in 1989 and met monthly in various members’ homes to run their trains. Their first president was Brian Thompson, age 17, and son of current member Kirk Thompson. The club currently meets in the basement of the Kohl Building behind Valley Drug. The club started by building train layout modules that were

portable so members could transport these modules to various public venues, ie. Daly Mansion, train shows, Southgate Mall, etc. The club is now refurbishing their present layout site which will be on full display the weekend of the Creamery Picnic. Trains start running at 5 p.m. on First Friday and then again on Saturday
afternoon from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Excess model railroad equipment will be set up and given away to visitors at the train site. Those interested in joining the club or wanting more information can contact the club by email: bvmrclub@gmail. com. Club members Kirk Thompson and Chris Stieh organize the display cabinet.
