Wednesday night is the Ranch Rodeo. This is a team event where cowboys and cowgirls compete in such events as team sorting, team branding, trailer loading, and other activities that are done every day on a ranch. Thursday night is the BullsNBroncs event. Who doesn’t like watching a bull that weighs 1,800 pounds going up against a 150 pound cowboy?
Welcome to the Bitterroot Valley’s premier event of the year, the Ravalli County Fair and Rockin’ RC Rodeo. There is something for everyone at the fair. From carnival rides and cotton candy to bucking bulls and clowns, kids of all ages can find something to watch or do. And, there’s a plethora of fair food to please any palate. The exhibits offer everything from sunflowers and cookies to dairy goats and draft horses. The exhibit barns and buildings open on
Wednesday, August 31 following the Fair Parade down Main Street in Hamilton which starts at 10 a.m. If you like to watch 4-H and FFA members showing animals from beef steers to rabbits, the shows are Thursday and Friday, and the schedules for the shows are posted at each barn.
Friday night features the Northern Rodeo Association rodeo. These cowboys travel across Montana and into North Dakota competing in sanctioned rodeos for a chance to go to the NRA finals in Kalispell at the end of October. The rodeo is produced by Red Eye Rodeo Company out of Deer Lodge with owners Kaehl and Sarai Berg. The NRA Slack will take place immediately following the rodeo on Friday Saturdaynight.morning is the 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale where the kids sell the sheep, hogs, goats and beef animals they’ve raised, often putting the money towards college tuition. Buyers come early for the free Buyers Breakfast before the sale. The Small Animal Auction is held on Saturday afternoon.
Have fun at the County Fair!

It’s only fitting that perhaps the wildest event of the rodeo is typically the first event. The wild action of a horse kicking high and twisting is matched against a cowboy holding onto the bronc by only one hand. The cowboy holds onto what looks like a solid suitcase handle on the ‘riggin’ that is on a cinch around the horse. The rider must ‘mark’ the horse out to receive a score. Marking means the rider’s boots are held over the points of the horse’s shoulders until the horse’s front feet hit the ground after the first jump out of the chute. The cowboy then pulls his knees up, straightens his legs out and repeats the motion over and over for eight-seconds. The score is deter mined by the technique of the cowboy and how well the horse bucks. At NRA rodeos, there are two judges, one judging each side of the horse and rider with a maximum of 50 points per side. A perfect score is 25 points for the cowboy and 25 points for the horse, per side, for a total of 100 points.
Trevor Kay of Chester is leading the NRA bareback riding this year with earnings of $7,749.60. Bryce Patterson was the 2021 NRA Champion. Wrestling A steer wrestler jumps off a speeding horse and onto the side Leverage is the name of the game in steer wrestling. When the steer wrestler jumps off a speeding horse and onto the side of a steer, he grasps the horns andouslysimultaneappliespressureto bring the right horn up and pull the head around. He is also grabbing the steer’s nose with the objective of bringing the steer to a stop and changing the direction of the steer before wrestling the steer to the ground. This needs to be done in the fastest time possible. The legs of the steer must all be pointed in one

Header Ian Austiguy from Dillon and heeler Sam Levine of Wolf Creek are leading the NRA in team roping this year with earnings of
$4,611.18. Austiguy and Levine were the 2021 NRA Champions. Brad and Brandon Yerian of Corvallis are in 7th place.

Saddle Bronc Riding This is the classic event of rodeo that has its roots deep in the west of old. bronc’sof‘mark’thehasn’ttheandhandcowboyandbuckingbroncforThistheseewouldCowboysgathertowhocouldtoprankesthorses.isthebasistoday’ssaddleevent.Thebroncjumpskickshighwhiletheontophasoneonthebuckingreintheotherheldhighinair.Thisbeautifulsightchangedmuchoveryears.Thecowboymustthehorseoutonthethechutebyhavinghisspursshoulders.Thespurring
action for saddle bronc is from front to back. Ideally, with every jump, the cowboy is reaching forward and straightening his legs as the horse’s feet hit the ground, and as the horse kicks high, the cowboy

direction before the flag is dropped. There is a hazer, another cowboy on horseback, in this event that keeps the steer running in a straight line. Tyler Houle of Bozeman is leading the NRA in Steer Wrestling this year with earnings of $3980.43. Jackson Stephens of Corvallis is in 12th place. Cole Detton was the 2021 NRA Champion. Team Roping Team roping is the only event in rodeo where two cowboys compete together to get a result. Once the steer is out of the box, the header moves in and ropes the horns or head of the steer. As the rope settles over the horns, the header dallies or winds the rope around the saddle horn and moves the steer to the left and into position for the heeler. The heeler must catch the heels of the steer, timing his throw so he can pick up both heels. If only one heel is caught, there is a five-second pen alty. The flag drops and time ends when both horses are facing each other and the heeler has dallied and the ropes are taut. Roping a front leg or having the loop settle over the horns in a Figure 8 results in a disqualification. The winnings are counted separately for the header and the heeler in the standings.

Page brings12 his feet back, behind him to the back of the saddle. Aside from the saddle, the only attachment the horse and rider has is the braided rope that is attached to the horse’s halter. Because saddle broncs have a high kicking action that can throw the cowboy forward, the cowboy has to adjust his arm so he isn’t jerked over the horse’s head. The saddle looks similar to a western saddle without a horn.
Ben Ayre of Glendive is leading the NRA this year in tie-down roping with earnings of $3,230.91. Cash Trexler of Corvallis is in 2nd with earnings of $3,078.93. Coltin Rauch was the 2021 NRA Champion.
Garrett Cunningham of Broadus is leading the NRA this year in saddle bronc riding with earnings of 7,824.51. Andrew Evjene was the 2021 NRA Champion.
There are extreme sports and then there is bull riding, where a cowboy weighing around 170 pounds tries to ride a bull weighing 1,800 pounds or more for eight-seconds. The bull, an extreme athlete in his own right, tries to get the rider off his back by bucking, spinning, twisting, or all three at once. The rider threads his hand through a braided rope that is pulled tight around the bull. Unlike saddle bronc and bareback bronc riding, the cowboy does not have to mark the bull out of the chute when he begins his ride. Spurring isn’t required but does add additional points. The cow boy also has to keep his free hand from slapping the bull or himself. If ishappens, thathedisquali fied. The ride is scored by two or three judges with a maximum of 50 points for the bull and 50 points for Caden Fitzpatrick of Polson is leading the NRA this year in Bull Riding with earnings of $4,521.87. Devyn Hundley of Darby is in 11th place. Whitford was the 2021 NRA
Bull Riding
Tie-down Roping Tie down roping is another event that has evolved from working ranches and is still used today to cap ture calves in pastures and pens on ranches. But in the rodeo arena, this event pits the cowboy and his horse against a ducking, diving, fast calf. The calf has a running head start or ‘score’. The calf has a rope around his neck held together with light string. If the horse and rider cross the barrier before that neck rope falls off the calf, there is a 10-second penalty. When the cowboy is within reach, he throws a loop over the calf’s head; his horse stops as the cowboy steps off and runs down the rope to the calf. He has to ‘clear’ or lift the calf, off the ground. Once the calf is laying on the ground, the roper takes his piggin’ string, a short rope that he carries in his mouth, and picks up a front foot and two back feet or a back foot and two front feet and ties them with ‘two wraps and a hooey’ and throws his hands in the air to signal the end of the run. After remounting, the roper rides forward while the judge times the calf for six-seconds. If the calf gets up before the six-seconds have expired, the run is disqualified but if it remains tied, the time is good.

Barrel Racing Ladies barrel racing is one of two events sanctioned by the Northern Women’s Rodeo Association. This event is a timed event with the horse and rider running a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. Time begins and ends when the horse crosses a prede termined start/finish line. The pattern must consist of two left hand turns and a right hand turn or two right hand turns and a left hand turn with the horse crossing its own path to form a cloverleaf. There is a five-second penalty for knocking a barrel over. Speed and athleticism contribute to a fast time but like a jockey on a racehorse, the rider helps the horse around each barrel using balance and position to enable the horse to turn tightly around each barrel. There is also a junior division in the NRA for riders 15 and under. Shai McDonald of Gardiner clocked a 17.55 to win the 2018 ladies barrel race. Haven Wolstein of Helena won the junior barrel racing. McDon ald is again in the lead for the year end buckle in 2019 with winnings of Darby Haskins of Superior is leading the NRA this year in barrel racing with earnings of $5,795.10. Abby Knight was the 2021 NRA Champion. Breakaway Roping

The second event sanctioned by the Northern Women’s Rodeo Association is breakaway roping. This is a timed event like tie-down roping, but the rope is not tied hard and fast to the saddle horn. Instead, the rope is tied on to the horn with a small string. Once the calf hits the end of the rope after being roped, the string will break. There is a ribbon tied about six inches from the end of the lariat. The flag is dropped and time stopped when the judge sees the ribbon drop from the saddle. The loop must drop over the animal’s neck and be drawn tight. If the calf runs through the loop, it will be a ‘no time’. The rider must stop her horse so that the calf runs straight away and

The cowboys and cowgirls who are out in the corrals, pastures and fields working cattle day after day come to town on the first night of the fair to battle against their friends and neighbors, cattle and horses. The Rockin’ RC Ranch Rodeo begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31. Teams of five will compete in calf branding, team doctoring, team sorting, bronc riding, wild cow milking and trailer loading. The teams are made up of five members with at least one man or one woman on the team. This is a crowd pleaser with lots of whooping and hollering, and a taste of days gone Muttonby.Bustin’ will return to the rodeo arena on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. with 15 of the best sheep riders in the valley competing on ‘rough and wool ly’ sheep. It’s hold on as best you can to see how far down the arena you can get. It’s fun and exciting for everyone.

The tears sometimes come on Saturday morning during the 4-H/FFA Market Livestock Auction. This sale marks the completion of a project that a member has put blood, sweat, more tears, and lots of dollars into. It doesn’t matter if it is a steer that the youngster has had since the first of October, or a lamb that they purchased in the spring, these animals have become the focus of the members. They make sure the feed is right and the animal is eating, that there is enough water, shade and activity to keep the animal comfortable and content. Snow, sleet, rain, or heat, this animal has to be taken care of every day and the members develop a kinship with these animals. When it comes time to sell them, it’s tough for the kids, and parents, but that too, is part of the project.
Page 19
The auction will be Saturday, September 3. This year, the sale order is Dairy, Sheep, Swine, Goat, Beef. At 6:30 a.m., there is a buyers’ breakfast with pancakes and all the fixings. Buyers will have free admission at the North Gate for the auction. You can buy an animal outright and have it delivered to a local processing plant to fill your freezer, or you can go in partners with your family or friend. Prior to the sale, support prices are announced. Support prices are the going market price for each type of animal, and are what the commercial buyers are willing to pay. If you just want to help out the seller, you can bid up that price on an animal and pay the difference. For example, if the support price is $1000 for a steer and you bid $1,400 (these kids hope you bid more), you will pay the $400. There is also a small animal market sale at 3 p.m. in Hornung Arena, where chickens, ducks, and rabbits will be sold. $200.00/moMonths.

The chutes have been painted purple. There is a purple powdered bronc and a purple powderd bull (still needing sponsors, call 375-4001) that will, if they’re not ridden, provide monetary support for SAFE (Sup porters of Abuse-Free Environments) and those who have been victims of domestic violence. If the bronc or bull is ridden, the cowboy will get a bounty for riding. Either way, the Man Up Crusade, the Ravalli Coun ty Sheriff’s Office, and the Rockin’ RC Rodeo is working to raise public awareness on the issue of domestic violence. Friday afternoon you can find Sheriff Steve Holton at the Dunk Tank and pay to dunk him with all the money from that going to SAFE. On Purple Night all rodeo par ticipants, fans and support personnel are encouraged to wear purple to show their support for this great cause.
Awareness is the first step in enacting change and it is important that people understand there are programs and help available right here.
Are you working on Thursday and Friday but still have a hankering for an elephant ear or a 4H hamburger? Not to worry. This year, the Ravalli County Fair is offering Lunch at the Fair. On Thursday and Friday, from 11am to 2pm, go to the Main Entry where you can purchase a special admission ticket. After you sample the goods on Food Row, and maybe walk through a barn or two, just return to that same ticket booth, return the special ticket, and your admission cost will be refunded. This must be done by 2pm. If you don’t make it back in time, you can stay at the fair as long as you want, or come back later in the day.

Above and beyond his commitment to the job, Rob has shown all along a commitment to the whole community in the place he chose to put down roots. Just last week he was out volunteering in the an nual River Clean-up and showed up at Rombo Campground to help clean up. He remains an especially engaged member of the county’s Open Lands Bond Board of Directors that administers the county’s Open Lands Bond Program. He sees it as a wonderful and effective way to save both open spaces and family farms in the valley, a good way to protect both the land and a way of life into the future.
Rob Johnson is being honored by the Ravalli County Fair this year and will ride at the head of the Fair Parade on Wednesday. Johnson has worked in the agriculture field for his entire career and served as the County Extension Agent for many years. He still runs a few head of cattle and serves on the county’s Open Lands Bond Program board. Photo by Michael Howell.
Rob Johnson: FAIR FAMILY HONOREE AND Fair parade Grand Marshal
Page 41Monday, August 29, 2022Bitterroot Star Fair Program
by Michael Howell
If there ever was a fellow who de served the honor of being chosen as the Grand Marshal of the Ravalli County Fair, it is the fellow being recognized this year, recently retired Ravalli County Extension Agent Rob Johnson. When Rob chose to take the job in Hamilton back in 1972, he had enough experience and edu cation to know what he wanted to do in life and where he want ed to do it. Looking back on things now, you could say that he was destined for the job from the time he was born in Glendive and ‘prepped’ in the little railroad town of Savage, Montana, about 30 miles northeast of Glendive.
Rob graduated from high school in Savage in 1956 and with an $80 check from his work using his dad’s thrashing machine, took off for the big city of Missoula and took a year of classes at the University of Montana studying range science. At that time, he said, students were required to take a summer job in their field of interest. He took a job with the Bureau of Land Management north of Jordan, Montana on the Missouri Breaks. He got quite familiar with the Breaks and decided not to go back to Missoula. Instead, he got a job on a sheep and cattle ranch near Baker. From there he moved on to work on a ranch south of the Big Hole, got married and had two kids and moved on to work on a ranch in eastern Oregon. He returned to his dad’s place in Montana after that and went back to school to get a degree in Ag Economics at Montana State University in 1961. He got a job studying range conditions on allot ments that involved placing steel posts for camera mounts and taking photos at the sites every five years to document the changes in the range. It was after that that a local Extension Agent that he knew as a kid got him interested in that line of work. His first job was in Supe rior, Montana where he worked for a year and a half before taking a job in Billings. It was working in Billings that his work in farming and ranching and animals suddenly got a new focus: working with youth. It meant lessons on canning food, clubs, camping and, of course, good old county fairs. It meant working with the local 4-H clubs especially. Having grown up participating in 4-H, he was eager to take that on. I’m sure that every 4-H kid in the val ley probably knows who Rob Johnson is. Kids involved in FFA probably know him as well. Not-soyoung-now Bobby Sutherlin knows him. Rob worked with young Bobby when he was in high school FFA to become the first applicant in the state to receive a loan under the Montana Department of Agriculture’s loan program at the time. The loans were not available for anything but breeding, so Bobby started breeding Red Angus. He’s still at it. But Rob’s work here in the Bitterroot has involved lots of plants and animals as well. He worked closely with late Senator Bob Thoft, a rancher up the Burnt Fork, who was instrumental in developing the first biological weed control experiments in Ravalli County. They worked with local scientist Jim Story and brought bugs over from Europe, where the native knapweed was being held in check by the native bugs, to see if it could work here. So far, they have done a remarkable job. Rob was also the local instructor, every other year, in the state’s Master Gardener program for several years and inspected certified hayfields to ensure that the crop was truly weed-seed-free. Weedseed-free hay is required for back country horsing.
