From the Publisher ANOTHER year goes by, financial year that is, so as we prepare to lodge our tax returns would it not be nice if we could also account for our personal actions of the past year? In planning forward it is always good to reflect on the past, so that we don’t make the same mistakes again.

It is a bit of cliché but this has been a busy period, with the planning of fourth India Day Fair and everything else that I get involved in.

On India day fair, even though I am not a committee member, I have been privileged to be invited to the planning meeting and I must say that the team work is commendable. There is no greater pleasure than listening to the incoming committee stressing the very points that the organisation was set up for. The system works when good policy and procedures are put in place and capable and like minded people drive it.

On the International scene I was humbled to be reappointed as GOPIO International Coordinator for a second term. This is what GOPIO International President Ashook Ramsaran had to say “I am pleased to inform you that the Executive Council of GOPIO International has accepted my recommendation and unanimously approved your re-appointment as: GOPIO International Coordinator, Oceania. The effective date of your appointment as GOPIO International Coordinator, Oceania is immediate and the term of all appointees shall coincide with the term of the Executive Council. GOPIO International Coordinator, Oceania reports to the President of GOPIO International. In the absence of the President, GOPIO International Coordinator, Oceania shall report to the Senior Vice President. As we increase GOPIO’s efforts to expand and grow in the coming years, it is important that we continue your efforts to increase GOPIO’s outreach by establishing GOPIO chapters in new cities while solidifying the existing chapters to be in good standing and become more vibrant and responsive to community needs, interests and concerns. Locally I must thank our entire community organisation for the excellent work they all are doing in their fields. One point to note is that whatever we do is a reflection on our community at large, Minister Glen Elmes was very disturbed by the so called racist attacks in Ipswich, he made a special trip to Raj and his family.

When I met Mayor Paul Pisasale, he to too echoed the same sentiments. GOPIO Queensland president Yousuf Alikhan also condemned the attacks via a timely media release.

On a lighter note I was very pleased to attend the Hanumaam Chalihsa recital at Laxmi Narayan temple and must comment the organisers for having done a wonderful job of organising the event, it was particularly good to see the support of many other organisations. I also attended the “2 Idiots” show, which was also very well organised; even though I would only understand 80% of Gujrati language I enjoyed 100%. The actors were extremely good and once you got engrossed in the storyline language did not matter.

I was also pleased to launch in Brisbane “Highway to Suva” a Vimal Reddy movie made entirely in Fiji, this was his third movie and to me the best so far. Wishing him all for his future endeavours.

Govinda’s show is coming to Brisbane and will be held one day before India Day fair, on that note I would like to thank Aneesh Mishra and Suneel Raj for considering my plea of not holding the event on the same day, even though originally it was planned for the same day in Brisbane. With these few word I will pen off, there is a lot of good reading in this issue, so until next month.

Immigration to South Australia IMMIGRATION SA has updated their State Nominated Occupation List and related policies as at 1 July 2014.

These include: * Adding further occupations to their list and simplifying the state sponsorship process, including receiving an invitation within 2 business days if you are selected for state nomination. * State nomination places will now be calculated on time of submission rather than time of decisions, so applications will not be refused due to planning levels being exhausted.

Recognising applicants commitment to SA Those who have worked in that state for at least 12 months in a skilled occupation will have access to a more extensive occupation list; * Graduates of SA universities access to the SA Graduate List of occupations, * Graduates of SA VET courses access to occupations with ‘special conditions’ on the State Occupation List. * Reductions in IELTS scores to 6 in each band to align with DIBP requirements, except for Health and Education Professionals who remain at 7 in each band. * Allowing international graduates of SA graduates access to a work experience waiver if they are currently working 20 hours per week in SA their nominated or closely related occupation. * Skills assessment validity requirements have also been changed to align with the recent DIBP changes.

Immigration South Australia introduced a new nomination pathway, chain migration*, which allows applicants with an immediate family member permanently residing in South Australia to apply for a state nominated visa.

A MOVIE made in Fiji premiered to a full house on 15th June at Event Cinemas, Mount Gravatt. People of Australia Ambassador and Publisher of Brisbane Indian Times, Umesh Chandra was the chief Guest at the red carpet premier.

Director Vimal Reddy and other cast members were present at the screening. Pritash Dutt, who previously featured in Vimal Reddy films, was the MC for the event.

Umesh Chandra invited Vijay Kumaran to sing a few lines from the title song of Highway to Suva. Vijay also played the role of a policeman in the movie.

Vimal Reddy said he was very pleased with the response the movie had received; Reddy had previously made Adhura Sapna and Ghar Pradesh.

Highway to Suva featured Rishi Deepak from Mumbai and Tarishma Gounder of Lautoka as lead artists. Ratu Rakuita Tawake of Nadi also had a prominent role in the movie with his comic scenes and dialogues.

The characters speak Fiji Hindi but have sub titles in English. The item song is performed by an Indian dancer, Natshasha Baweja, the cousin of Bollywood heartthrob Harman Baweja and niece of Happy Baweja.

Together with Vijay Kumaran, famous Bollywood singer Javed Ali has also sang a song in the movie, the music of which was composed in India.

The story revolves around a young couple who elope on a bus headed from Lautoka to Suva via Queens’s highway; the police get involved in the search and finally uncover a gang involved with kidnapping. The family drama highlights the cultural difference of the North Indians and South Indians in a humorous manner.

Overall the movie is well made and the best out of the three so far, the cast and crew have put in a lot of effort and the music is well complied, cinematography has greatly improved from the past. It was a total pleasure to watch.

JULY 8, 2014: The High Court has granted an interim injunction to block the handover of 153 asylum seekers to Sri Lanka, just hours after the Government confirmed another vessel had been returned.

On Monday 7th July the court heard an urgent claim from barristers seeking to protect the group, which includes 32 women and 37 children and is believed to be under the Government’s control at sea.

“We argued that the asylum seekers are entitled to have their allegations - claims against the Sri Lankan government - heard and processed in accordance with the law,” solicitor George Newhouse said.

“The Minister can’t simply intercept them in the night and disappear them.”

Mr Newhouse said he was shocked by revelations a separate group of 41 asylum seekers would face criminal charges in Sri Lanka after being returned.

“That strengthens the urgency of this court application because if this Government is putting those people at risk of criminal charges, imprisonment and torture - because that’s what happens in Sri Lankan prisons then these people need assistance urgently,” he said.

He says the asylum seekers “claim they are fleeing persecution and that they are at risk of death, torture or significant harm”.

Mr Newhouse says 48 of the 153 asylum seekers on the boat, including women and children, were named in court.

“The others we’ve sought protection for even though we were unaware of their names,” he said.

The Minister can’t simply intercept them in the night and ‘disappear’ them.

Solicitor George Newhouse Justice Susan Crennan declared it was probable the asylum seekers had been detained or were in the custody of the Navy and would be handed over to Sri Lankan authorities.

She ordered an interim injunction against any transfer until this afternoon, when the matter is set to be heard in the High Court.

A spokesperson for Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says the “Government notes the matter is currently before the court and accordingly will be making no further comment”.

It is understood some of the asylum seekers fled Sri Lanka to refugee camps in India before boarding a boat to Australia.

The Tamil Refugee Council claims at least 11 people on that boat have been tortured by Sri Lanka’s intelligence services, and says there must have been more people on the vessel in a similar situation.

The boat was intercepted off Christmas

Island more than a week ago but Mr Morrison refused to comment on its fate.

Returned asylum seekers face ‘rigorous imprisonment’ Earlier on Monday, Mr Morrison confirmed 41 asylum seekers had been handed over to Sri Lanka’s military.

Mr Morrison said the group of asylum seekers already returned to Sri Lanka were intercepted on a boat west of the Cocos Islands.

The 37 Sinhalese and four Tamils from Sri Lanka were scanned by teleconference at sea before being transferred to the Sri Lankan navy on Sunday 6 July.

The Government said one of the Sinhalese might have had a case for seeking asylum but opted to be handed back to Sri Lanka after being told they would be sent to Manus Island or Nauru for offshore processing.

The asylum seekers were taken to the port of Galle and handed over to the Criminal Investigation Division, which is an arm of the intelligence branch.

Sri Lankan police say the group includes 28 men, four women, seven boys and two girls.

It is a crime to leave Sri Lanka without leaving by an official port, so people who are caught at sea and returned are often charged with illegal migration offences.

“They will be charged under the immigrants and emigrants act,” police spokesman Ajith Rohana said.

“The sentence for those who are proved to have left illegally is two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine.”

He said investigators were yet to identify who among the asylum seekers organised the boat journey, but they faced a jail term of five years and were unlikely to get bail. He said none of the children would face charges.

Sri Lankan authorities will also be trying to establish if any of the men have links to militant groups, which officials say is why the intelligence department must screen them.

Leading refugee lawyer David Manne says it is hard to predict what will happen to them next.

“This is part of the problem that we’ve seen in Sri Lanka with people being essentially summarily expelled there without proper due process,” he told the ABC’s 7.30.

“It’s a country where there is an extremely serious systematic abuse of human rights ongoing in the country against a certain minority particularly, and it is often very difficult to precisely track the fate of a returned asylum seeker.

“There are profound concerns that [returning the asylum seekers] is not legal, that it is violating people’s fundamental rights and putting people’s lives at risk.”

AT the recent annual general meeting of the Indian Programming group of Radio 4EB a new committee was elected. The group is lead by Shyam Das as convenor, Umesh Chandra as Vice convenor, Viral Shah as secretary, Ashutosh Raina as joint secretary, Rakesh Sharma as treasurer, Saumya Tripathi and Jagisha Kothari as committee members.

Silvia Bosco as the returning officer commended the group on the well coordinated AGM. The group has made significant progress in terms of programming. A strong emphasis is being placed on the community news and events.

With renewed enthusiasm the team now has a number of presenters and qualifies panel operators. The group is planning on playing a major role at all of Radio 4Eb functions and events such as the radiothon and annual dinner and dance.

The challenge for the group is getting back the lost air time, this will be really hard to achieve during the current time spot, but more airtime may be available at other times or on the digital chanel.

This was conducted by Punjya Guruji Shivachariya Sada Shiva, guri ji is a prominent priest and spiritual leader. Born in Fiji, he teaches and practices from his temple in Vancouver, Canada. Guru Ji in is known for his special and healing powers, his popularity is gaining momentum worldwide.

The auspicious day began with “Suprabhatam” at 5:30am which was followed by Shree Ganesha aarathi, soon after the aarathi various Ramayan mandalis starting the recital of Hanumaam Chalisha. The support of the Ramayan Mandalis was commendable. The whole event was very well organised and coordinated. Hawan ceremony was conducted outside while the mandalis recited Hanumaan Chalisha inside.

Courtesy Nikhil Reddy A DREAM has turned into reality, aspirations have been realised, and pride has been restored – the dream for Telangana has come to a reality. The longest struggle for creation of separate state in the history of India has come to halt.

Telangana has a significant place in the Indian History. Right from fighting for rights against Nizam to the struggle for formation of separate state, Telangana is a land of notable memories. 60 years of continuous struggle, participation of people from all age groups, involvement of Statesman, Students, Professors, Employees, and all other community groups and the result of many sacrifices is today’s statehood of Telangana.

India got Independence on August 15th 1947 and all Indians were happy except Telangana as it was still under Nizam’s extreme rule. Telangana region as the then Hyderabad state merged into Independent India on September 17th 1948 under the operation of Late Sri Sardar Vallabhai Patel.

November 1st 1956 is the day when Hyderabad State and Andhra State got merged together to form Andhra Pradesh.

Right from the formation of Andhra Pradesh State, majority of the statesman opposed the decision and later on identified the gaps which were depressing the development of Telangana region. The only way to restore the pride of Telangana region has been recognised as the separate state formation and then on the agitation started. 1969

is a remarkable year in the history of Telangana, around 369 students died in the government action against the peaceful protest. From then on, the people of Telangana region expressed their strong belief and desire in the separate state formation in every possible manner.

A prolonged struggle for 60 years came to an end with the birth of Telangana, the 29th State of India. It is with the sentiment that Brisbane Telangana Association Inc. celebrated the commemoration of creation of the state of Telangana on 8th June 2014.

With over 250 participants, the Yeronga State High School Auditorium was echoed with Jai Telangana and all celebrated the Telangana formation with great enthusiasm.

The event unfolded with an audio-visual presentation on the struggle for Telangana and its achievement. It also included congratulatory and motivational video messages by Prof. Kodandaram – TJAC Chairman, Shri T. Harish Rao – Irrigation Minister (Govt. of Telangana), Shri Etela Rajendar – Finance Minister (Govt. of Telangana), Shri Solipeta Ramalinga Reddy – MLA Dubbaka for Telanganites living in Brisbane.

There were a series of spectacular folk dances from the region. The expression of the dancers, moves, devotion, mesmerized the audience. Some comic relief was provided which left audience in splits with laughter. The enthusiasm of the performers, the cheerful faces, the energy, the emotion, the number of attendees, made this an occasion to savor.

This is an annual grant program which the Australian Government funds with the aim of promoting respect, fairness and a sense of belonging for Australians of every race, culture and religion.

The main objective of the Leaders for Change project is to build an awareness of the guiding principles of good leadership.

The leaders have an opportunity to share their own experiences of leadership, best practice examples, and discuss common issues, with the aim of assisting each other and develop the common understandings and linkages that are so crucial to community leadership. ing’s into practice having worked with their respective community members. Together they delivered a community celebration during harmony day on 22 March 2014 and World Day for Cultural Diversity and Dialogue and Development celebrations scheduled on 5 June 2014.

This is in an environment where many have not had similar experience. By coordinating the project ASCOF joins part of a national network of organisations that are passionate about promoting inter-communal harmony among all Australians.

Gujju Friends host two idiots

THE Gujju Friends Group presented a stage play “2 Idiots” at Princess Theatre, Annerley Road, Wolloongabba on 27th June. For their first event, it was very well organised.

Through hard work and an active marketing campaign the event became a sold out success.

The show was well scripted and the actors were just superb, the story had a serious message but presented in a delightfully humorous manner. The actors were very good and well suited to their characters. The sound, lighting and background score well added to the play. The princess theatre was a good choice of venue, being compact and cosy well suited for this stage play.

Vik Shah and his team did a fantastic job. The audience

was captivated till the end, Mr Oza and his team outperformed themselves once more.

Dr Mahesh Ji is from Delhi, and was in Brisbane for last two months.

The Ved Prachaar programs were scheduled with the Sunday Satsangh and Satsangh at the member’s residence. The topics differed and highlighted according to the occasion, which gave the audience an opportunity to gain considerable knowledge in each aspect of life. Vedas are known to be oldest scriptures in the library of the world today, and such knowledge is wealth of knowledge. To acquire such true knowledge through learned persons like of Dr Mahesh Ji is indeed a great privilege.

The topic included Atma (Soul) and its association with our body and Ishwar (God). The ritual associated with death rites and its purpose. The value of Mother, as in Pitra Yaj (out of 5 Mahayaj, this is the third one). The reasons for observing five Mahayaj, and benefits one can attain from following them. The purpose of human life, and how we can attain Moksha through performing our duties by doing good Karma (deeds). The difference between humans and animals even though we all have same soul. The Prachaar highlighted why humans are superior and how we can take advantage of this human life to secure Moksha. The audio of the Prachaar is played through our Sunday religious programmes by Radio Brisvaani. I am more than happy to give you copy if you wish to listen to these subject matters.

Vedas specifically deal with following subject matters: 1. Vijnana or metaphysics means realisation of all things made by the almighty God. Indian philosophy and metaphysical studies deal with this subject. He, being the highest of all entities, the Vedas treat Him predominantly.

2-Karma means all sorts of actions or activities, physical or mental, with or without a desire for reward. The Vedas teach all these and explain in short all aspects or needs of human conduct which may be helpful in making human life cultured and sublime.

3. Upasana — Communion with the almighty God through the eight-fold observance of yoga.

4. Jnana—According to the Chhandogya Upanishad, Vedic study comprises natural sciences, physics, chemistry, science of numbers, chronology, science of logic, science of polity, grammar, etymology, sciences cognate to the Vedas, botany, zoolo-

gy, anthropology, fine arts, science of war, science of spirituality etc. Wheeler Willox, an eminent American scholar, admitting the existence of sciences in the Vedas, remarked, “We have all heard and read about the ancient religion of India. It is the land of the great Vedas, the most remarkable works, containing, not only religious ideas for a perfect life, but also facts which all the sciences have since proved true.

Electrons, Radium, airships all seem to be known to the seers who found the Vedas.”

MINISTER for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes has condemned recent racist attacks on the owners and staff of an Indian restaurant in central Ipswich.

In an interview with Umesh Chandra Glen Elmes said that he valued the contributions of the migrant community and strongly condemned the attacks in Ipswich. The audio of the interview was played on various programs via Radio 4EB and 98.1FM. Mr Elmes said he didn’t believe the attacks were indicative of how Ipswich residents viewed our state’s cultural diversity, but the acts of a few cast a shadow over the whole Ipswich community.

“The people of Ipswich are better than that,” Mr Elmes said.

“These racist attacks from rednecks who don’t understand the positive contribution people from different cultures make to Queensland demonstrate their extreme ignorance.

“Queensland is richer culturally and stronger economically for the contribution made by migrants and refugees.

“People from different cultures introduce us to the wondrous variety of lifestyles from around the world, and they provide opportunity and employment to Australians who work in their businesses and businesses who supply their business.

“Migrants and refugees are no threat to our culture; it’s the ignorant racists who are the threat, and who should be condemned.

“Queensland’s cultural diversity has contributed in a large way over many years to making the state the great place that it is.

“The Queensland Government supports cultural diversity, and constantly promotes the right of everyone – no matter what their origin or skin colour – to live in harmony and to go about their everyday lives within a tolerant society.”

On a lighter note Minister Glen Elmes told Umesh Chandra that he was once again looking forward to India Day Fair, he said the department was proud to support an event that showcased all that India had to offer. He commended the organisers for putting on such a magnificent event without cost to the general public. India day celebrating India Independence Day will held on 10th August 2014 at Roma street Parklands.

Get Threaded brings beautiful International service Directorship 2013-14 brows to Queens Plaza By HJ Abdul Rahman (Ray) Deen IT gives me great pleasure to submit my report for the year, in which our club decided to fund raise for a major project & a series of smaller projects. As we have 4 major fundraisers, in the year to produce the majority of funds.

Total funds in the vicinity of $30,000 clear profit was achieved from the following projects: 1.The annual Golf day at Oxley Golf Course, an ambrose event.

2. Annual sales of Xmas cakes, puddings and Shortbread biscuits. 3.The Annual Xmas BBQ/ for Drake Trailers, where we cater for and average of 175 people. 4.Annual Gambaros Dinner, Auction , Fundraiser, now in its 15th year.

Led via International Directorship, annually the major recipients are approved by the board. In this instance the following are to receive $30,000 to be divided: 1. The Fred Hollows Foundation, Overseas Aid, $25,000. 2. Polio eradication. 3.

Support for School of St. Jude, Tanzania. 4 Mahboobas promise Afghanistan / Orphanage & Windows support and training.

We are on track to support all 4 mentioned projects with some carry over funds from last year, we can attribute some more funds to other local recipients that we support on a regular basis.

There is a need to support in the next year some of the following projects: 1. Toilet block in India for Indian boys, similar to the one completed by our club for the girls Schools via PDG, P/P, PhF,

Ross Forgione, which received worldwide acclaim. 2. Items from DIK, for BA/Mission Hospital, Fiji. (An assessment will be carried out in August 2014 to see what their needs are and what can be supplied). 3. Confirm previous commitment to Varavu Primary School, updating computer lab equipment which is now 10 years old and becoming defunct. 4.

Support for Primary Schools in Indonesia, some places are very poor and don’t even have a blackboard. 5. Support for Mehboobas Promise to support widows Vocational training and educating young girls and boys equally. 6. Shelterbox campaign.

Our duty is to be of assistance to support and help people to achieve, we need to be able to help people UP, to help themselves, not just to give a hand out. As the saying goes, feed them fish, or is it not better to teach them to fish, this is the better way and more productive for all concerned.

It has been a pleasure to help fundraise to assist those in need through our projects, and not expecting any reward from anybody, or peers, our reward comes from many directions, especially the Lord above and the pleasure and satisfaction you get from helping those who are not in a position of self help.

We always support the exchange students programme, incoming and outgoing, it is one of the most beneficial projects of Rotary, to create mutual understanding. Assisting the likes of School of St. Jude and Mehboobas Promise is creating educated people of the future.

Support for the Fred Hollows Foundation is one of the most rewarding ventures Rotary could get involved in, due to giving back sight. It is almost unbelievable, for only $25 – the cost of a lunch in the land of OZ, you can restore sight!

As part of the eradication of Polio, agencies had said that the horrible disease could not be completely eradicated ever, Rotary said “why not?”. At this stage 99% of the world has been treated, now the end is nigh, but the job....the job is not over yet.

The Australian Government committed over 4 years $100 Million to help eradicate Polio and usually the Bill Gates Foundation matches dollar for dollar to continue the fight.

This is why we still support the ongoing commitment of most Rotary Clubs worldwide. My Dad suffered from Polio when he was a child, but it still caused him aggravation through his life.

I know what it can do to a person, we as Rotarians are playing our part by supporting funding. To continue the fight for total eradication of Polio, this is how you engage Rotary to changes lives.

I am pleased to be able to assist the Board in any way I can for the betterment of the Club, as I have been doing for the previous 26 years as a member of the Club. I hope we grow from strength to strength and continue to produce good results and outcomes for the future and for all concerned.

THE Queensland based founder of personal grooming business, Get Threaded, has announced big plans for the brand with the first Queensland store opening.

With successful licencees, master franchisees and franchisees across Australia, Liz See is shifting her focus to Queensland with the help of newly appointed master franchisee, Teagan Maddern.

The opening of the franchised Get Threaded Brow and Beauty salon in Brisbane CBD marks the culmination of many years of planning for Ms See, who started the business with just $5000 in 2009 after discovering the ancient art of threading while holidaying in America.

Realising that for her threading business to be a success it would require qualified and professional staff, Ms See decided to focus firstly on developing an official threading course for aspiring and potential beauty professionals.

“Although beauty services are not licensed or regulated in Australia I felt we needed to provide official qualifications in order to spur our growth,” Ms See said.

Ms See, who lives with her family on the Sunshine Coast, put her years of industry experience to the test and spent the following 18 months researching, testing and trialling all she’d learned about threading. The Get Threaded certificate of completion course went live via the company’s website in 2009.

Inventive events launch “Bollywood Vibrations” in Brisbane

Brisbane Fete de la Musiqe 2014 FETE de la Musique is the largest international live music event in the world. Developed by the French government in 1982, Fête de la Musique is held around the world every year on 21 June.

Now in its sixth year, Fête de la Musique Brisbane again provided a platform for everyone who loves making music.

Newcomers joined veterans on the streets of Brisbane on 21 June and brought to the city a day full of music from nearly every genre.

The day was a spontaneous affair and musicians who popped up in all sorts of places. Fête de la Musique was featured in Fortitude Valley in the morning until lunchtime and the Queen Street Mall and South Bank from lunchtime through to the evening. It was also featured in Brisbane libraries, on public transport and at stops.

Aneesh together with his Brisbane team launched the event in Brisbane on Sunday 6th July at a dinner function.

Together with the Glamour Events team; Suneel Raj, Dhinesh Bulsara and Imraan Khan, Aneesh had other locals to the event launch held at Mahendra India Cuisine in Acacia Ridge. Other guests included President of Sanatan Dharam Anukar Mishra, representative of QFFA Vineet Raj, Umesh and Usha Chandra of Brisbane Indian Times, Jess Kumar, Bimal and Mala Singh, other sponsors etc.

The show will be held in Brisbane on 9th August, a day before GOPIO Queensland India Day Fair. Aneesh had originally planned for the Brisbane show to be held on 10th August, after consultation with Umesh Chandra, he kindly shifted the date to 9th August. Umesh Chandra said that we need to work together and cross promote each others’ events.

Umesh Chandra is personally known to Suneel Raj, Brisbane promoter and Baba Saheed the Melbourne promoter. The event will now be held on 9th August at Brisbane convention centre. At the Launch Aneesh said a Bollywood show with a Bollywood actor was coming to Brisbane after fourteen years, the last show was Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla.

But my personal favourite is the XUV500, I drive one to work, I think they drive sensationally, with fantastic economy and a great turning circle.

“Just the way they are accessorised, from the sat nav right down to the reversing camera screen, everything’s there, not like a lot of other makes where that screen is an afterthought attached to the rear view mirror or stuck on the windscreen or the dash. Here it’s a finished item. The visibility of it too, it’s a good safe vehicle for the whole family to drive with very few blind spots in it, unlike a few of the other vehicles around.”

So after his decades in the car industry, what keeps Graham Booth enthusiastic about coming back to Starkey Mahindra?

Speed warning signs slow down motorists LORD Mayor Graham Quirk is making suburban streets safer with Council’s Portable Speed Warning Signs project continuing to record a positive change in driving habits by alerting motorists to their speeding behaviour.

Infrastructure Chairman Cr Adrian Schrinner said the data received from the first two rolling locations for the 26 portable speed warning signs indicated an ongoing positive impact with an overall reduction in speeding.

“The 26 portable speed warning signs were placed in a local ‘hotspot’ location for a minimum of one month and then moved to a new location, with the aim of increasing driver awareness to reduce speeding and create safer roads,” Cr Schrinner said.

“The data from the portable speed warning signs shows an average speed reduction of 9.5 kilometres per hour at the 50 sites analysed for the initial and second sites.”

He said the data also showed an increase in awareness with stronger than anticipated results for the second dataset.

“In the first month 29 per cent of drivers were recorded speeding when they entered the radar range, with 37 per cent of those drivers adjusting their speed when they were made aware of it,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Encouragingly the second wave of data from the

next location showed an improved behaviour trend both for the amount of cars recorded speeding as well as the number of drivers that changed their behaviour, indicating an overall rise in awareness.

“Of the 2.8 million vehicles through the radar zone, only 15 per cent were recorded speeding, with 40 per cent of those drivers adjusting their speed before exiting the radar zone.”

Initial site results: • 2.3 million vehicles passed the 24 portable speed signs (data not available for Bracken Ridge Ward and Central Ward) • 687,000 (29%) were travelling over the posted speed limit when entering the radar range • 255,000 (37%) of these vehicles were below the speed limit when exiting the radar range • Average speed reduction was 10.1km/hr for vehicles who were travelling above the speed limit when entering the radar range • Average speed reduction for all vehicles was 5.7km/hr.

Second site results: • 2.8 million vehicles passed the 26 portable speed signs • 436,000 (15%) were travelling over the posted speed limit when entering the radar range • 177,000 (40%) of these vehicles were below the speed limit when exiting the radar range • Average speed reduction was 8.6km/hr for vehicles who were travelling above the speed limit when entering the radar range • Average speed reduction for all vehicles was 4.5km/hr.

Brisbane to host new Asia Pacific Film Festival Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival, 29 November to 14 December 2014 BRISBANE will this year stage a 16-day international film festival featuring the screening of around 60 films from the Asia Pacific, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced on 26 June.

Cr Quirk said the event, Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival (BAPFF), would be a re-imaging of the State Government’s Brisbane International Film Festival, funded in part by a $700,000-a-year grant from Screen Queensland and delivered by Brisbane Marketing.

“The Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival will be a high-calibre film event showcasing the filmmakers, films and documentaries of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA),” Cr Quirk said.

“Free public screenings and ticketed events will be held from Saturday 29 November to Sunday 14 December including themed programs, a special showcase of the winning films, filmmaker introductions and Q&A sessions.

“BAPFF will be an exciting opportunity for locals and visitors alike to experience many of our region’s best films and perhaps rub shoulders with some of the stars and filmmakers who will be in Brisbane for

the awards.

“I am sure it will open our minds and hearts to the rich and diverse offerings on our doorstep and – with more than one in four residents born overseas – it will be particularly appealing to Brisbane’s multicultural community.”

Cr Quirk said the Asia Pacific was the world’s fastest-growing film region encompassing 70 countries, 4.5 billion people and half the world’s film output.

Screen Queensland earlier this month announced Brisbane Marketing would take the reins of staging the international film festival. It will provide $700,000 a year for three years to Brisbane Marketing as part of its Screen Culture funding program to help stage the festival in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The school is a project of the Islamic Education and Dawah Trust (IED), a charity founded in 1992.

IED is also responsible for Zayed College for Girls and Al-Maqtoum Mosque (“Airport Mosque”), both of which are also located in Westney Road, Mangere.

Al-Madinah School accepts students of both sexes from Year 1 to Year 13 and teaches the national curriculum in addition to being a school of a special, Islamic character.

Now State-integrated, the management made plans in August 2012 to expand in order to meet the increasing demand for places at the school from Auckland’s fastgrowing Muslim population.

In April 2013, the Minister of Education granted permission for Al- Madinah School to expand its roll of students.

In October 2013, Auckland Council granted resource consent for the school to start construction work on a second storey.

Late in 2013, work began on raising the 300-tonne building a centimetre at a time in order to accommodate the new floor at ground level.

“Asia Pacific is the economic powerhouse of the world and hosting APSA and BAPFF strengthens Brisbane’s proposition as the new world city – not just of Australia – but of the Asia Pacific,” he said.

“I have no doubt that as BAPFF evolves it will also serve to highlight Brisbane as an attractive film location and cultural tourism hotspot.

“Brisbane Marketing will target the strong Asian communities of Sydney and Melbourne to ensure BAPFF is a not-to-bemissed annual event at which to see the films and meet the stars and filmmakers of their countries of origin.”

IN A remarkable month GCHCA secured the support of number of Parliamentarians.

Minister of Education, training and Employment and Member of Surfers Paradise Hon. John-Paul Langbroek pledged his support to the cultural precinct project. On invitation the committee representatives visited the State Parliament where they had open and frank discussion with Deputy Premier Hon. Jeff Sweeny Minister of state development, infrastructure and planning and Hon: Rob Molhoek MP for Southport and Assistant Minister for planning Reform. This visit was a positive development in seeking State government support to this “First of its kind in Queensland “project.

It was felt that as the largest regional city and one of the fastest growing region, still Gold Coast lacked facilities to reflect its multicultural society and similar to the “China Town Project”, the GCHCA is prepared to take on board the Queensland Government’s policy of multi culturalism and work towards building a Hindu Cultural precinct. The project is perfectly placed to meet the Multi cultural policy, local Government effort on creating employment and Growth, promoting tourism by increasing the exposure of Gold coast among culturally diverse population interstate and overseas. The precinct will be felt as a home away from home for young students from overseas, especially from the growing market in Asian countries such as India who make use of the excellent University education in this region. The Commonwealth games in 2018 is a draw card when lot of Athletes from Indian sub-continent and supporters are expected to visit Gold Coast and the precinct is to play a key role in their spiritual and cultural need while the image, cultural familiarity and exposure created will encourage further visits.

GCHCA is glad to inform that it has submitted the Development Application (DA) with the GCCC to build the cultural precinct in the $3.5 million land it acquired in Arundel. As the Association approaches the second Anniversary the 2nd AGM is

New committee members will be elected to number of committee positions which will fall vacant including the President, Secretary and Treasurer. GCHCA appeals to the public to join the Association as life members and participate in the activities of the Association and serve in the management committee. In its annual calendar the Association is planning to have its second “Navaratry on the shores of Gold Coast”. Following a successful first Navaratry Festival, the Association is taking steps to have even a better and bigger Navaratry festival at the Nerang Bi centennial hall on October the 5th.

Palampur: an exotic destination in Himachal, India From Dhaval Vyas Ahmedabad, India IT is known as the ‘Tea Capital of North India’, Palampur is a beautiful hill station located in Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh. Set on the rising slopes of Kangra Valley before they merge with the Dhauladhar ranges The town of Palampur gets its name from ‘Pulum’ which means ‘abundant water’. The region has innumerable streams and brooks flowing across the region which in turn has been a boon for tea plantations.

Boasting of lush green cover consisting of pine forests and tea plantations along with pleasant climate and stunning views of snow clad Dhauladhar ranges, Palampur is an interesting vacation option for summers. The quiet town is also home to some of the tallest deodar trees in the country.

In addition to its scenic beauty, Palampur also offers visitors a chance to practice some adventure sports. Palampur serves as the starting point for treks to Dharamshala, Kangra, etc. The famous Baijnath-Manali trek passes through the town.

May to October is the best time to enjoy trekking in Palampur. Bir, situated 35 km from the town is a popular centre for paragliding activities. Bir along with Billing, which serves as the landing spot, are referred as the ‘Paragliding capital of India’.

Established as a town by Dr. Jameson who introduced tea plantation in the hill station, the town grew as a famous centre for tea plantation within no time. Today, Palampur tea has gained international recognition. Tibetan handicrafts, carpets and wooden handicrafts made in Palampur are also extremely famous.

People of Palampur are extremely warm and friendly.

While enjoying the hospitality of the locals, do not forget to try out Jhol, a popular local drink made of rice water.

There isn’t enough recorded history of Palampur.

However, it is believed that the region was earlier known as Trigarta. It is also believed that Jalandar Kings ruled the region once.

However, the town of Palampur was founded by Dr. Jameson who served as the superintendent of Botanical Gardens. He brought tea bushes from Almora and started its cultivation in Palampur. Following the successful plantation, European Tea Estate owners followed suit and started extensive tea plantations in the town. Since then, Palampur achieved international fame for its tea plantation. Hindi movies like 1920 & parts of the movie of Amir Khan’s Raja Hindustani are shot in Palampur.

Palampur can be visited all through the year. Summer months are pleasant with temperature ranging from 15-30 degree Celsius. Winters tend to be extremely cold with mercury levels dropping as low as minus two degree Celsius in peak winter. During these months one can wit-

ness snowfall in Palampur. The town receives low rainfall during monsoon. February to November is the best time to visit the town.

Innumerable small restaurants can be found throughout the town. Chinese delicacies served in these restaurants are extremely popular. Most of the restaurants also serve Indian and Continental cuisine. Street stalls serve delicious parathas, pakoras and chaat.

Hotels with restaurants attached to them also serve multicuisine delicacies.

Prime attractions Neughal Khad: Close to the temple of Bundelmata temple, is this 300-metre-wide chasm through which the Neugal stream flows.

Andretta: The charming village, spread below the thickly wooded hill and sprawling plains of the Kangra Valley was once the home of the famous painter Sardar Sobha Singh and the playwright Ms Norah Richards. Now Andretta is a centre for various artistic activities such as pottery and is just 13-km away from Palampur.

Baijnath: Noted for its ancient temple, which was built in 804 A.D. and dedicated to Shiva Vaidyanatha. Its tall shikhara carved in stone is framed by the imposing snow capped peaks of Dhauladhars. The linga enshrined in its sanctum is one of the 12 jyotirlingas in the country. Every year during the Shivratri fair, thousands of pilgrims descend on Baijnath for the colourful fair and festivities. It is 16-km from Palampur and 56-km from Dharamsala.

Bir and Billing: Sheltered by the mountains and surrounded by tea gardens, Bir serves as a landing ground for hang

& Para gliders as well as known for its Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan handicrafts. One of the best aero-sports sites in the world, Billing is 14-km from Bir. The mountain ranges set like an amphitheatre, offer opportunities for high altitude and cross-country flying for more than 200-km.

Chamunda Devi: The famous temple dedicated to the goddess Chamunda is 25-kms away from Plampur and Yatri Niwas here provides an excellent accommodation for the visitors.

Gopalpur: Situated 13-km away from the town, Gopalpur consists of a mini zoo.

Tea Factory: The cooperative society tea factory provides an insight to the processing of Kangra Tea. Temple of Bundelmata: Walk through tea gardens and open fields or drive to reach this temple built about five centuries ago.

Al-Hilal: A few kilometers from the city of Palampur is AlHilal, a place of unparalleled charm. During the conquests of Kangra by Maharaja Renjit Singh, this place was a military bastion.

Trekking: Several trek routes lead out of Palampur, particularly over the Dhauladhar Mountains towards the town of Chamba. Treks of 5-8 days duration are viable from May to October. Some of the interesting treks from Palampur include Palampur to Holi over the Shingar pass, Palampur to Dharamsala via Indrahar Pass and Baijnath to Manali over the Thamsar pass.

Hang/Paragliding: Twenty-eight kilometers from Palampur is an important center for the adventure sport of hang/paragliding. It also has numerous Buddhist monuments and is famous for its Tibetan handicrafts. The town of Billing, which is 42 km from Palampur and 14 km from Bir, is also an important center for hang-gliding.

Fishing: There are ample opportunities for the angler between 1st March to 1st June and 1st September to end of October for Mahaseer fishing in and around Dehra Gopipur, Nadaun and Pong Dam. How to get there Rail: Palampur does not have an airport or railway station.

The nearest railway station is at Maranda, which is 2-km from Palampur and on the narrow-gauge line between Pathankot and Joginder Nagar. The main bus station is located 1-km south of the main Bazaar. There is frequent bus service from Palampur to Dharamshala, Mandi, and Pathankot. Travelers can also make use of taxis to travel to these towns from Palampur.

Fairs and Festivals In the month of March, Holi’s riot of colours and celebration of spring comes with laughter and vitality. There are exuberant celebrations at Palampur and Sujanpur.

Dear BIT readers, Thank you for joining us on the journey of Inspired Indians to pursue true purpose for your life. Every person on this planet has a unique purpose; all the people must make it as a priority to know their purpose.

Today I want to share my Jawun journey with you. You may be wondering what is the meaning of the word ‘Jawun’. It is a word used by the indigenous people of Australia around Mossman Gorge of Cape York Peninsula. ‘Jawun’ means friend.

Recently I was seconded to Cape York as a part of Qantas community engagement to work within an indigenous organisation.

The Jawun programs seek to empower indigenous community people by placing skilled people from large organisations to transfer the skills and experiences. The Jawun founder Noel Pearson’s vision is to help people move from welfare economy to real economy. Mr. Pearson has inspired many leaders and organisations to join hands with his radical vision to bring community transformations. He said, “We’ve got to distinguish between poverty and passivity, we’ve got to understand that opportunity alone is not enough, that you’ve got to crunch the question of reenergising people, re-engaging them, and getting them to take responsibility”.

Jawun is essentially people sharing their stories. Our corporate and government secondee’s share their stories – their expertise, skills and knowledge. In return, our Indigenous partners share their stories – their values, culture and point of view.

Djarragun College is located in Far North Queensland, and has an enrolment of primarily indigenous students from remote communities across Cape York, the Torres Strait Islands, Yarrabah, Cairns and surrounds. The College has a strong commitment to the improvement of educational outcomes for indigenous students from Prep to Year 12, including a strong vocational education program. They recognise that the delivery of educational programs varies for these students, and seek to provide small class groups and one on one tutoring wherever possible. I was welcomed by the staff and students with a warm heart and quickly gained positive relationship with them. I was able to understand the needs of some students who required additional learning support along with nourishment to their soul and spirit.

My heart enlarged through understanding

and getting to know many indigenous students; and their many challenges to break the cycle welfare economy to real economy. We need to acknowledge and honor the traditional owners of Australia by being a true Jawun (Friend) to them and learn about their generous heart towards migrants.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful RAMADHAAN : THE FULL PACKAGE - MERCY, FORGIVENESS & FREEDOM FROM THE FIRE OF JAHANNAM

BY ML.M.NAWAAZ ASHRAFI THE Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) has said: It (Ramadhan) is the month, whose beginning is mercy, its middle, forgiveness and its end, emancipation from the fire (of hell) — Bihar al-Anwar, Vol.: 93, Pg.: 342 Ashara is an Arabic word which means “ten.”

In Islamic terminology, the 1st Ashara refers to the first 10 days of the Holy month of Ramadan. The second Ashara refers to the middle 10 days (11-20), and the third Ashara refers to the last set of 10 days (21-30).

The first Ashara focuses on the servants plea for Allah’s Mercy. The middle Ashara of Ramadan is the time for Maghfirah; the time to wash off our sins. Ramadan is the month to seek Forgiveness and repentance. Having witnessed the Mercy of Allah (SWT) by thanking Him for all that He has granted us, by being good to everyone and keeping ourselves at peace, we realize our relationship with our Rabb, and our role and duties towards Him. This is the time when Allah’s (SWT) Mercy is at its peak, and it is best to utilize this opportunity by imploring Allah to forgive our sins. The Prophet(S) is reported to have said: “Do repent in this month to Allah for your sins, and supplicate with raised hands at the time of prayer as these are the best times, during which Allah Al-Mighty looks at his servants with mercy. Allah answers if they supplicate, responds if they call, grants if He is asked, and accepts if they entreat. O People! You have made your conscience the slave of your desires. Make it free by invoking Allah for forgiveness. Your back may break from the heavy load of your sins, so prostrate (sajda) yourself before Allah, for long intervals, and make this load lighter.”

We are required to reflect on these elements in these days of Repentance even more than any other days and this is the time we seek forgiveness and make amendments for our mistakes, never intending to do them again. Do Tauba repeatedly, constantly, and sincerely for Allah loves Tauba, and especially during this Ashra Allah loves to forgive and loves him who seeks forgiveness. Forgive your brothers in Islam, and accept them as friends, and show no ill-treatment or disrespect to others. The Prophet(S) continued and said: “O’ People! Anyone who during this month cultivates good manners, will walk over the Sirat (bridge to Paradise) on the day when feet will tend to slip. For anyone who during this month eases the workload of his servants, Allah will make easy his accounting, and for anyone who does not hurt others during this month, Allah will safeguard him from His wrath on the Day of Judgment.”

DUA: May Allah guide us to Siraat-e Mustaqeem, and grant us the taufeeq to utilize this merciful and ever so forgiving Ashara of the Most Holiest of the Holy Months. May Allah accept our sujood o qayaam and tauba, for indeed His mercy prevails over his wrath, and indeed we are sinners in dire need of that mercy. Aameen.

Maximize the last 10 days of Ramadan The significance of lailatul Qadr (The night of Decree) The importance of Lailatul Qadr is great since Holy Quran was sent down in this night. The Muslims who find Lailatul Qadr should stay up and pray whole night out of faith and hoping for reward from Allah. As to the importance of Laylatul Qadr (the night of Decree), it is better than a thousand months. Allah almighty says in the Holy Quran: “verily! We have sent it (Quran) down in the Night of Decree (Lailatul-Qadr). And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is?

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh (i.e. Gabriel) by Allaah’s Permission with all Decrees, Peace! until the appearance of dawn.” (Al-Qadr 97: 1-5) How should we observe Laylatul-Qadr: 1. The prophet (P.B.U.H) used to stay up and pray on Lailatul-Qadr so it is prescribed to stay up and pray whole night. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Whoever stands in (Prayer) in LailatulQadr out of Eemaan and seeking reward then his previous sins are forgiven.” (Bukhari) 2. It is prescribed to supplicate a great in Lailatul Qadr. It is reported from Aisha (R.A): “O Messenger of Allah! What if I knew which night Lailatul-Qadr was, then what should I say in it?” He said: “Say: Allaahumma innaka ‘affuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘annee.” (O Allah, You are forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me).” (at-Tirmidhi) 3. One should strive hard in worship during the last ten days of Ramadan. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) used to worship in the last ten days of Ramadan as he never did at any other time. nights more than he would at other times.”

(Muslim) If one misses this blessed night it is as if he has missed a lot. Therefore every Muslim should pray and hope for the great reward associated with this night.

Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) is described in the Quran as, “better than a thousand months” (97:3). Any action done on this night such as reciting the Quran, remembering Allah, etc. is better than acting for one thousand months which do not contain the night of Qadr.

Allah’s Messenger used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time.” (Muslim).

Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet.

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, related that the Prophet said: Look for Laylatul Qadr on an odd-numbered night during the last ten nights of Ramadan (Bukhari).

The Prophet said: “Whoever prays during the night of Qadr with faith and hoping for its reward will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim recorded from Abu Huraira).

Chocolate massage cream: To make a chocolate massage cream for your body, add cocoa powder and some milk cream in a bowl. You can mix some gram flour (besan) as well if you have oily skin as it will help remove dirt and oil. This paste can be massaged into your skin, even on hands and legs. Keep it on for at least 15 minutes and then take a hot shower. Usually in spas, they wrap your body with a thin, plastic film (not the face, just body) after applying the paste to let its effect seep into your skin.

Chocolate scrub: Scrubs help you get rid of dead skin cells, giving a glowing complexion by removing impurities and dirt from the skin’s top layer. A scrub made using natural ingredients won’t harm your skin but keep in mind which ingredient to add based on your skin type.

Take some cocoa powder and add rose water or lime juice (if you have oily skin) in it. Now, grind some oatmeal and add to the mixture. Add some raw sugar and honey too. Mix well but make sure the paste is semi-solid. Rub it on your face, knees, and elbows in a circular motion. If you feel it is too harsh for your face, add olive oil to the paste to balance it out. You can wash your face immediately.

If you are unable to find cocoa powder, you can buy dark chocolate from the market and melt it in a double boiler.

The most important thing is, to be able to monitor your stress levels and know how to deal with your problems as they appear. The body is superbly equipped to deal with stress, but up to a certain level. If you're adaptive resources become overworked and exhausted, your body ceases to function smoothly. Different organs then can become stress targets.

Stress is now becoming more accepted as being crucially related to our total health - physical, mental and emotional.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, the majority of all physician visits are prompted by stressrelated symptoms that are known to cause or worsen medical conditions.

Stress is our response to specific stimuli called "Stress inducers". Or they are the events that generally produce stress. They may be temporary or chronic, leading to negative health consequences or outcomes changing a person's life. Although life itself is dependent upon certain forms of stress, it is only when stress is handled poorly by the body or mind that it becomes a health hazard. Stress that is expressed or experienced negatively can be linked to many physical complaints, from headaches and hypertension to symptoms affecting a person's mental state. Anxiety, depression and feelings of anger, fear, helplessness or hopelessness, and other emotions are often linked to stress.

Two powerful body systems cope with stress. The nervous system controls the rapid body changes, while the endocrine system regulates the longer-term patterns of stress response by releasing hormones into the blood. The adrenal activates the sympathetic nervous system, reducing the normalizing effects of body function. This increases the metabolic rate, heart rate, circulation and blood pressure. In addition, effectiveness of the digestive system is diminished and disturbances in sleep patterns become common.

How stress is created?

Interchangeably used with the word anxiety, stress relates mutually to our social and psychological environment. Major situations like divorce, marriage, retirement, death in the family, pre-natal conditions, a job loss and other emotional upheavals as well as minor hassles like waiting in line for hours, getting struck in a traffic jam, misplacing or losing something, disputes, even daily household chores and competitive examinations in fact any unsettling human experience can sometimes become stressful and play havoc with a person's health.

IF you own an investment property in Queensland, chances are you’re paying higher council rates than the owner-occupier next door.

Yep, as soon as ‘Big Brother’ finds out your property is being rented out, you’re likely to be hit with some nasty extra rates.

The logic behind it is that you’re getting a tax deduction every year for your rates, so why shouldn’t you be charged accordingly?

Problem is, many people get a tax deduction for their phone each year, based on the fact they make work calls. Yet everyone pays the same price for that phone.

Likewise, some people get a deduction for wearing sunglasses at work, but everyone pays the same amount for their sunglasses.

Why then, should you be charged more for council rates?

This topic has burst onto social media, thanks mostly to a recent case in Mackay.

In a nutshell, a group of investors, called the Mackay Investor Rates Committee, took the Mackay Regional Council to court over the fact they were being charged higher council rates simply because they owned investment properties, and didn’t live in them as their principal place of residence. It went to the Supreme Court, which ruled it was in fact illegal for a council to charge investors higher rates than owner-occupiers.

The Queensland Local Government Association has now launched action in the Court of Appeal. If the appeal is dismissed, Mackay Regional Council would face a massive refund bill of $1.6 million for 7742 properties. But the much bigger issue is that the decision would potentially leave the gate open for thousands of investors around Queensland to launch action. It also means many councils – 20 in fact, including

Brisbane, Gold Coast and Townsville – would face losing millions of dollars in revenue each year if they have to charge investors the same rates as owner-occupiers. No wonder councils are scared.

Destiny found and investor Margaret Lomas, who has long inspired and fought hard for many ‘mum and dad investors’, is leading a massive charge against this issue.

She’s encouraging people to campaign on social media with #equalratesforpropertyinvestors. She’s even gone to A Current Affair this week to voice her concerns.

And you can see why she’s annoyed. Many investors work hard to own an investment and not rely on the pension down the track.

Why should they be punished for it simply because they don’t live there? Even the recent ruling in Mackay was handed down based on the fact that rates are given to property owners based on the land size and value, not the use of the land.

I remember receiving a letter from the Gold Coast City Council some years ago as soon as I moved out of my unit and asked if I was now renting it out. Soon enough, the higher rates started coming in. Until now, it seems there was no choice but to pay the extra fees. Now, investors are fighting the fight.

Peter Crossan is one of the investors taking on Mackay Regional Council. He says the whole court case has been fought on donations to a trust fund of legal firm Wallace & Wallace.

“We now need to raise funds for the appeal. Any unused funds will be returned on a pro-rata basis,” Peter says.

APPLYING for a home loan is a lot like selling yourself to the lender.

You’ve got to convince them that you’re worthy of a mortgage- someone who is trustworthy, reliable and capable of making the necessary repayments on time.

When you approach them, it’s important to ensure your financial health is up to scratch.

While you may not necessarily understand all the jargon being thrown around the office, as long as you provide the necessary details, you should be in a good position to succeed.

However, there are a number of ways to help boost your financial standing in the eyes of lenders and other institutions.

Evidence of savings/ deposit Lenders are looking for the type of people who are able to show self-control and restraint with their money. If you’re able to prove to them that you have a longterm, consistent saving plan established, this can reassure them of your suitability for a loan.

Not only does this help to prove you’re

level-headed and reliable, but in the event that you are unable to make a repayment for whatever reason, having these savings means you’re in a better position to fulfill your obligation to them.

Rent Payments: If you are renting, you should be able to demonstrate that rent payments have always being made on time. With some lenders it can help you secure some credibility when it comes to making repayments.

Employment: If you are self-employed, you should have completed at least 12-24 months in your business. For anyone in PAYG employment arrangement, minimum duration of employment vary from lender to lender. Lenders prefer stable and long term employment.

IF we had a Yuan for every time we’ve been asked this lately: “Do you have buyers flying in from China who might want this property?”

The government’s started a public discussion on the topic with their Inquiry into “Australia’s Foreign Investment Policy As It Applies To Residential Real Estate.” And market chatter offers great promise of uneducated foreign buyers touching down at Eagle Farm with a suitcase brimming with cash. Those of you selling a property see an opportunity to achieve a premium, while those wanting to buy fear a cashed-up competitor may drive up prices.

So here’s one view on what’s really happening with foreign buyers in the majority of Queensland’s real estate market: Very little. And the reason is a simple one. Most of them cannot buy established or second-hand residential real estate in Australia.

Under rules administered by the Foreign Investment Review Board non-Aussies may only purchase brand new property unless they have one of a limited category of visas, or permanent residency. “It is the Government’s policy that foreign investment in Residential Real Estate should increase Australia’s housing stock. That is, the policy seeks to channel foreign investment in the housing sector into activity that directly increases the supply of new housing (such as new developments of house and land, home units and townhouses) and brings benefits to the local building industry and its suppliers.“ Queensland is attractive to foreign buyers and the 2012-2013 stats show for proposed investment in residential real estate, by value, we had 11% of all approvals. The three largest source countries by value are

China, Canada and USA accounting for 11.4%, 9.5% and 8.5% respectively of all approvals.

Clearly property developers are making sales into foreign markets. That’s not a new distribution channel for off-plan property sales and tenants may want to thank them for helping add new stock. According to the Real Estate Institute of Australia, “The number of investment properties held by non-residents, whilst increasing marginally over the six years to 2011-12, has been around an average of 72,000 properties.”

“These statistics provide a guide to the extent that foreign investors are providing an increase in the number of rental properties.”

REIA argues that “the level of foreign investment as a proportion of the value of dwelling stock… is still at a level where the ability of foreign investors to influence the market is negligible – in QLD it was 0.24 per cent.”

Many parts of our state are very multi-cultural property marketplaces and we have a lot of clients and customers born and raised in China, Canada and the USA – along with hundreds of other nations, but now making their home here.

We’ll leave it others to debate the pros and cons of foreign investment and whether the current laws should change. What we do know is for many of these cultures there’s an ingrained love of bricks and mortar. Like the Italian and Greek immigrants of past generations as an example, who made a solid mark on Queensland property demand, another generation of new Aussies is showing longer-term locals the benefits of real estate investment.

Naturally as real estate agents we love them for that!

Incentives crucial to stabilising activity

CHARTING the course of first home buyer activity in Queensland can be a bit like watching a roller coaster.

Since 2000 there have been marked peaks and troughs, as first home buyers have responded to general market conditions and, just as importantly, the availability or absence of government incentives.

First home buyer rates are driven in part by affordability, and government-funded incentives have always been a crucial part of this equation. This chart shows how the fortunes of first home buyers have fluctuated since the turn of the century, in response to the ebb and flow of incentives which started with the introduction of the $7,000 first home owners grant in 2000.

Presently, first home buyer levels in Queensland are below their long-term average. According to the latest Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) Housing Affordability Report, the number of loans to first home buyers in Queensland fell

11.6% in the March Quarter 2014.

The REIA report also shows there was a slight fall in affordability in Queensland in the March Quarter 2014, with the proportion of income required to meet home loan repayments rising 0.4 percentage points, to 28.3 %.

However, compared to the March Quarter 2013, housing affordability in Queensland improved with the proportion dropping 2.0 percentage points.

While this modest upward trend in affordability over the last year is to be welcomed, we would like to see even more first-time buyers enjoying the benefits of home ownership. The REIQ has long supported policies aimed at improving housing affordability and first home ownership rates in Queensland.

We have been a staunch advocate for policies designed to increase the supply of affordable housing and we contributed to the REIA’s submission to the current Senate inquiry into housing affordability.

first home owner grant for established housing. Current government policy means there is only a financial incentive for first home buyers buying or building new housing.

Doing away with this artificial distinction and making the incentive available for both new and established housing has the potential to boost first home buyer levels. It would help younger Queenslanders in particular to get a foothold in a rising market.

The REIQ also wants to see the abolition of conveyance stamp duties and more private investment harnessed to improve the supply of social housing. It’s important that government works closely with the states and territories to develop and implement tailored policies to address this important issue.

While there’s no ‘silver bullet’ to improving housing affordability, these measures would be a good starting point. The REIQ will continue to advocate for policies aimed at improving housing affordability and boosting first home buyer levels.”

Changes in laws open doors for guide dog users

Is the Great Australian Dream out of reach?

The findings paint an interesting picture of where our future is trending – the Great Australian Dream of home ownership is fading for a significant percentage of the population either because they feel unable to obtain and manage a mortgage, or because it’s too expensive to buy into the area they rent in.

The latter point is an interesting one. It’s not just price getting in the way of renters, but also their lifestyle expectations.

NEW laws have strengthened the rights of people with a guide, hearing or assistance dog to rent accommodation.

In Queensland, people who rely on guide, hearing and assistance dogs have rights under anti-discrimination laws to use and rent accommodation. Under these laws, a person can seek compensation or another remedy if they are refused use of the accommodation.

Recent amendments to the Guide Hearing and Assistance Dog Act 2009 now make it an offence for an accommodation provider to refuse to rent accommodation because a person with a disability is accompanied by their guide, hearing and assistance dog.

refused to approved trainers, employee trainers and puppy carers because they are with trainee support dogs.

Under the new laws people with disability cannot be charged extra for or be separated from their dog.

The maximum penalty for breaching the law is $11,000 for an individual or $55,000 for a corporation.

Real Estate News Commissions in the spotlight

“Commissions are an increasingly hot topic for the Queensland real estate profession, as the local industry prepares for a new legal and regulatory regime.

“With the passage of the Property Occupations Bill through State Parliament in May, maximum allowable commissions on residential sales will soon be a thing of the past. These changes will finally bring Queensland into line

with other Australian states and territories.

“While the new laws are not yet in force, they will result in real estate practitioners and their clients being given ultimate contractual freedom to negotiate commission rates.

“The previous legislatively prescribed formula was seen by many in the profession as a handbrake on their ability to negotiate commission fees which reflect the level and scope of services to be

provided.

“So how will the Queensland real estate profession respond when there is no longer a cap on maximum allowable commissions?

“The REIQ believes it will create a more competitive environment in the residential sales marketplace. Consumers and agents will now have the ability to negotiate commission rates that suit their individual needs and take into account the level and quality of the services to be performed.

Brisbane Airport master plan

Brisbane’s northern suburbs are set to benefit from improved infrastructure projects as planning schemes are put in place to cater for the future development and growth of the state capital.

Foremost among these is the Preliminary Draft Master Plan released

by Brisbane Airport (BNE) in March this year. The draft plan which relates to the future development of the airport precinct is up for public comment.

Julieanne Alroe, BAC CEO and Managing Director, said the 2014 Master Plan was aimed at ensuring airport planning achieved a balance between economic development, sound environmental management and sustainability.

According to BNE’s draft plan, Brisbane Airport passenger numbers will more than double to 48 million a year by 2034, when it is estimated the airport will directly contribute over $8.2 billion to the economy and provide nearly 52,000 full-time equivalent jobs.

The Brisbane Airport expansion is part of the Australia TradeCoast (ATC), one of three key districts identified in the Brisbane Long Term Infrastructure Plan. The ATC is expected to generate 25 per cent of Brisbane’s export growth and nine per cent of jobs growth over the next 20 years.

MORTGAGE insurance is often seen as “the great evil” by home hunters, desperate to avoid this additional cost when buying property.

Usually if you have less than a 20% deposit (through cash or other equity) your lender will ask you to insure them against your possible default. So if you’re buying a $500,000 home for example and have just $50,000 deposit, you may need to pay a Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) premium of around $8,800.

Notice the insured party is your bank, not you, with this policy designed to cover their backside if you default at any time during the term of the loan and the sold-up asset doesn’t cover the balance of your loan.

So if you’re busily squirreling away every penny and eating 2 minute noodles from the room under your Mum’s house, the simple question for home buyers is this: Should you wait to buy until you’ve saved that extra $50,000 (in the above example) or cop the bill for $8800?

The premium is a once-off for the life of that loan, and of course once your equity tops 20% (through either debt reduction or capital gain) you can shop for another loan without LMI. REIQ’s research team confirms that home prices are rising in many Queensland markets. So LMI might not be the big bad enemy we all assume it to be. Say for our example it takes you another 12 months to save that $50,000 deposit but prices rise by another 10% in the meantime (Sydney is up 15% this past year). That same property would then cost you another $50,000 – and you’d need a further $10,000 in deposit!

If you think home prices are rising and you want to buy before you’ve saved the full 20% deposit, you might feel this insurance is a cost worth having. Investors might also consider they can likely claim their LMI premium as a tax deduction.

Of course we do recommend home buyers do their homework and exercise caution in borrowing. Interest rates remain at generational lows but few commentators expect them to stay there.

Alia Bhatt and I have a love and hate relationship: Varun Dhawan B ollywood actor Varun Dhawan says he and his Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya co-star Alia Bhatt are just friends and they share a love-and-hate relationship. "We have spent so much time with each other that we are comfortable with each other. Ours is a love and hate relationship. We keep fighting a lot on various small things. But we are friends," Varun said.

"We get little shocked when people say that there is a intense amazing chemistry between us. Chemistry is needed in a love story but we did the film as actors," he said.

Recently, Alia said in an interview that "Varun gets angry on her because he loves her".

On this, the 27-year-old actor replied, "It is friendship-wala love only. There is nothing like that."

Varun also made it clear that he is not dating anyone. However, in real life he would

Harvard professor sues Anurag Kashyap for lifting Sold script AN Indian-origin Harvard professor and author, Siddharth Kara has filed a case against director Anurag Kashyap in the Delhi High Court, alleging that the script of Kashyap's film on child trafficking, Sold (2014) is based on his book Sex Trafficking: Inside the Business of Modern Slavery.

Anurag has been named in the case, with the film’s director Jefferey D Brown, producers Jana Charles and Guneet Monga and actor Nandita Das. “In 2012, I became aware that the film’s script has several similarities to unique elements present in my script and book. I alerted my concerns to the producers and they said that they felt there was no infringement of any kind,” says Kara, adding, “Anurag agreed that he had read my script, and was touched. Kissing scenes for the actress are okay as long as she believes in her director’s vision.

“If it’s used to market a film, I wouldn’t know why. I am no marketing expert. As for doing kissing scenes, I am quite conservative at heart. Performing intimate moments doesn’t come easily to me. I will do them only when necessary.

Don’t know if my daughter wants to get into movies: Saif Ali Khan ACTOR-producer Saif Ali Khan, who is the father of two children – Sara and Ibrahim – says he gives them their space and is not sure whether his daughter wants to get into films.

On reports that Sara is planning to get into film he said: “I give them a lot of space and don’t control them. I think may be Sarah is a little interested but she is studying in her first year in America. After she gets her degree from Columbia she can do whatever she wants.

“I think she wants to work in some government agency so I don’t know if she is going to get into movies.”

He further added: “She gets compliments and she is excited with the idea but her work has nothing to do with films.”

Mallika, who entered the Indian film industry in 2003 with “Khwahish” , was recorded on video dancing with the “Desperado” star during a party in Cannes two years ago.

Goals galore, but stats show defenders are holding up at World Cup 2014 AUTHOR Bill Gerrard Professor of Business and Sports Analytics at University of Leeds THE 2014 World Cup has been celebrated for the number of exciting, high-scoring matches it’s given us. It started with four goals in the opening game as Brazil defeated Croatia 3-1. Then, who could forget the dramatic 5-1 demolition of Spain by the Netherlands? Equally memorable was the France-Switzerland group game which produced seven goals with France winning 5-2.

But before we conclude that the World Cup has seen a move towards greater emphasis on attacking football, we should put the 2014 World Cup finals in historical context and compare goals scored in this tournament with previous ones.

The group games and the round of 16 in the 2014 World Cup have produced 154 goals from 56 games. When comparing with previous tournaments, the best comparison is to use the average goals per game which takes account of the changing structure of the tournament over the years – the current 32-team, 64-game format was only adopted in 1998, having expanded from 16 teams to 24 teams in 1982.

The 2014 World Cup has so far averaged 2.75 goals per game. This is markedly higher than the previous two tournaments and indeed even with eight games still to be played, more goals have been scored in 2014 than in the whole tournament in 2010 (145 goals, 2.27 goals per game) and 2006 (147 goals, 2.30 goals per game).

But it was the low number of goals scored in 2006 and 2010 that was unusual, not the number of goals scored in the current tour-

nament which is on a par with the 1994 and 1998 tournaments and, going further back, very similar to the tournaments in 1962, 1966 and 1982. The 1970 Finals were higher, averaging 2.97 goals per game. And, of course, the average goals per game in 2014 is nowhere near the levels achieved in the 1930s and 1950s.

A full comparison will need to wait until after the tournament ends since the final games tend to see fewer goals scored. This is already evident in the round of 16 games which have averaged 2.25 goals per game compared to 2.83 goals per game in the group games. The decrease in goals scored per game is even greater if the comparison is limited to the first 90 minutes. Of the 18

goals scored in the round of 16 games, 11 goals have been scored in normal time which translates to only 1.38 goals per game.

Attacking drivers Attacking effectiveness in football ultimately depends on gaining territory and then translating territorial gains into scoring opportunities. A statistical analysis of all 112 team performances in the 2014 World Cup so far shows that the two most important attacking drivers of goals scored are shot production – the number of shots per attacking third entry – and shot accuracy – the percentage of shots on target. The other key drivers of attacking effectiveness are the number of penalty area entries, the

number of completed passes, and work rate, particularly high-activity distance covered.

The reasons for the fall in the number of goals scored in the round of 16 can be attributed to a reduction in the number of completed passes as well as distance covered. Perhaps playing so many games in a relatively short period of time and often in conditions of high temperatures and high humidity is beginning to take its toll – both in work rate as well as technical accuracy.

Defence But, of course, the number of goals scored depends not only on attacking effectiveness but also the defensive effectiveness of the opposition. Hard-working teams who are well organised defensively, able to retain the ball and keep it away from their defensive third, and have a good goalkeeper, will concede fewer goals.

This is confirmed statistically by the data for the 2014 World Cup. Better defence in the round of 16 games has been a key factor in the reduced number of goals scored with more saves, more successful tackles and more successful clearances than in the group games.

So, the 2014 World Cup Finals have not just been about attacking football. Winning the beautiful game depends as much on defence as it does on attack. The team that lifts the World Cup on Sunday 13 July will be that team that is best able to combine creativity in attack with organisation in defence, and possess both a lethal finisher and a great shot-stopping goalkeeper.

IF there was one surface that allowed miracles, it was grass. Before they changed the green stuff at the All England Club, it used to have bad bounces, it used to allow the ball to slide.

But while Wimbledon may make whatever noises it does about continuing tradition the fact is that the venue fundamentally changed its nature ever since they changed the basic soil and grass way back in 2001. So we have steady baseliner Novak Djokovic hold on to his gluten-less food hardened nerves subduing seven-time winner and natural volleyer Roger Federer 6–7 (7-9), 6–4, 7–6 (7-4), 5–7, 6–4. It’s just that Federer dared not come up to the net anymore.

It’s just not possible to enjoy Wimbledon for what it was. Those two neat furrows paring the grass — one dug deep by shuffling feet while volleying and the other behind the baseline — no longer exist. Instead what we have is one lonely toil at the back. The surface which was once supposed to be ‘fit for cows’ is now game for any bushwhacker with the right kind of arsenal swinging from his hips – the modern game with its extreme grips favours ground strokes generated from the core and not the dart and finesse that serve and volley demanded.

Djokovic’s coach Boris Becker said on the sidelines of the HT Leadership Summit in 2012 that even he would struggle to win at Wimbledon now. So, in a game that’s getting more physical by the day, it would be plain unrealistic to expect a man a week short of 33 to down an opponent five years younger. Federer would have managed fine, except that they no longer allow the kind of leverage that Becker got from the grass when he rampaged to be the youngest ever winner at 17 in 1985.

The grass, sadly, is no longer as green in 2014.

Lewis Hamilton wins McDowell retains French British Grand Prix

Open as Stadler implodes PARIS: Graeme McDowell retained his French Open title by one shot from Kevin Stadler on Sunday 6 July after the American missed a twofoot putt on the final hole.

Northern Ireland's McDowell fired a final-round 67 to finish on five under par and overnight leader Stadler needed a par at the last to force a playoff in miserable conditions at Le Golf National.

He narrowly failed with a birdie putt from 25 feet which would have sealed victory and inexplicably missed his next effort to card a final-round 76 and hand McDowell his 10th European Tour victory.

Former US Open champion McDowell, who made five birdies and a solitary bogey on the last hole, trailed Stadler by eight shots after the third round and his win should guarantee him a place in this year's European Ryder Cup team.

India will be among best in 5 years: Oltmans NEW DELHI: India might have finished a disappointing ninth in last month's World Cup but Hockey India's high performance director, Roelant Oltmans, said on Saturday 5 July that hockey was moving forward and the team needed another five years to be among the best in the world.

"We are in the middle of a process. It's a transition phase and the team showed a lot of improvement during the World Cup in terms of structure and physical conditioning. The players performed as a team," Oltmans said on Saturday. "We are moving forward. We jumped from 12th position in the 2012 Olympics to ninth place in this World Cup. It will take at least five years to reach where we would like to be," Oltmans said, adding: "I am sure we will continue to

make progress."

Chief coach Terry Walsh agreed with Oltmans and said that the team was hoping for a top four finish in this month's Glasgow CWG. "Our aim is to bring the Indian team to the top six in the world and then into the top four. As far as the CWG is concerned, we are aiming for a final-four finish."

Oltmans and Walsh were interacting with the media after a meeting of the 10-member Team, Coaching and High Performance Evaluation Committee, which analysed India's performance at the World Cup and discussed ways for improvement.

Former players Ajit Pal Singh, Harbinder Singh, Walsh and Oltmans were part of the committee.

SILVERSTONE: Lewis Hamilton won his home British Grand Prix on Sunday 6 July and slashed Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg's Formula One lead to four points after the German retired for the first time this season.

Hamilton, who last won at Silverstone in his 2008 championship year, now has 161 points to Rosberg's 165 with 10 races remaining and his title hopes fully restored. It was his fifth win of the year.

Finland's Valtteri Bottas finished second for Williams, 30.1 seconds behind Hamilton, for his second successive podium with Australian Daniel Ricciardo third for Red Bull and a further 16.3 seconds down the road.

The race was red-flagged almost as soon as it started after Ferrari's 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen had a big crash that left the Finn limping to the medical centre with a sore ankle but otherwise unscathed.

It was the first time a race had been halted on the opening lap since Monaco 2000.

When it re-started behind the safety car after an hour's delay to fix damaged barriers, Hamilton went from overnight devastation to delight as Rosberg finally suffered some of the misfortune that had plagued his team mate.

The championship and race leader reported a gearbox problem after 20 of the 52 laps, and just after Hamilton's race engineer had informed the second placed Briton it was "Hammer time' - time to for a full-on charge.

Nine laps later, Rosberg slowed, pulled over and parked up on the grass as Hamilton sped past.

"It was just slowly but surely," said

Rosberg. "It started on lap 20 and then it just got worse from there.

There was nothing I could do or that they could suggest to save the gearbox.

"I was very much in control until then," added the German.

That's why it's all the more disappointing."

Hamilton's joy as he took the chequered flag was a complete contrast to the despair he felt on Saturday evening after gifting pole to Rosberg.

"England!," he shouted as he took the chequered flag to give his compatriots something to celebrate after a sporting summer of disappointment. "I couldn't be happier.

I'm sorry about yesterday, but a fantastic job today, as ever."

Rosberg had secured the top slot on the grid after Hamilton aborted his final lap in the mistaken belief that track conditions would not allow anyone to beat his time.

"He was devastated," his father Anthony told Sky Sports television before the race.

"Last night was tough for him."

Britain's Jenson Button, the most experienced driver in the race who has never finished on his home podium, chased Ricciardo home to take fourth for McLaren on an emotional afternoon for the 2009 champion.

The race was the first at Silverstone for Button, who started third on the grid, since the death of his father John in January.

Red Bull's quadruple champion Sebastian Vettel finished fifth after a lively battle with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who took sixth after originally starting 16th and then being hit with a stop/go penalty for overshooting his mark on the grid.
