BE FEARLESS AND HAVE FAITH IN THE DIVINITy

from daylight & darkness of the night, and from all directions.

Abhayam MitraadAbhayam-AmitraadAbhayam JnaataadAbhayam Parokshaat, Abhayam Naktam Abhayam Divaa Nah Sarvaa Aashaa Mama Mitram Bhavantu.

(AtharvaVeda 19.15.6)

O Eeshvar (God)! We seek your grace to be fearless from our friends & foes, from the known & unknown,

This mantra is an invocation to “be free from fear, be fearless and have faith in the Divinity.” It’s a call to always be alert as life is full of uncertainties which have to be faced as and when they arise; from friends & opponents, the known & unknown, light & darkness as well as all directions.

A similar prayer is found in the Manasaa-Parikramaa of our daily twilight BrahmaYajna or Sandhya where we seek the divine protection from all living and non-living beings, and from all directions. We need to consolidate our health (body-mindspirit) and self-confidence. Life demands not an attitude of flight as running away or hiding the head is no solution. Rather, the acceptance of uncertainties fosters courage to act, understand, love, nurture compassion, and endure create space for faith & hope to blossom.

We’ll realize the edict of “Manurbhava” – be humane in thoughts, words & deeds, and be the oil and wick in the lamp of humanity. Happiness (sukha), Peace (shaanti), and Prosperity (samriddhi) will illuminate human life all over the whole world. Acharya Bramdeo Mokoonlall Ji

Gratitude कतज्ञता is a noble human trait. It is respectful appreciation of support, care, love received.

Gratitude brings light to life. The Vedic (Hindu) philosophy upholds gratitude in terms of the Rina Traya (ऋण त्र्य), the three-fold liabilities under which every individual is born, which instill in us the sense of duties and responsibilities:

1. DEV-RINA, देव ऋण i.e. obligations to Eeshvar (God), the Creator of the universe and all the forces and elements therein sustaining the universe and life (space, air, fire, water, earth …etc.), the revelation (Veda) and the knowledge ingrained in the universe (physical & other sciences)

• We need to honor the cosmic process, i.e. respect the laws in Creation - the laws of nature, refrain from polluting the planet which sustains life, make judicious use of resources, and not leave the planet in a worse state than we inherited by doing Yajnas (Agnihotra / Havan) as a maintenance process of the environment.

2. RISHI RINA ऋषी ऋण i.e. obligations to the seers (rishis) for the rich heritage & culture, the transmission of knowledge, the Vedas - the living values for peace, social cohesion, and fostering the inquisitive tradition.

• We need to keep ourselves on that learning curve, add to the wisdom and disseminate it to the next generation, hence Atithi Yajna paring respects to visiting learned and elderly persons.

3. PITRI-RINA पपत ऋण i.e. obligations to parents, ancestors and the elderly around us for their contribution in our physical, mental-moral-spiritual & social upbringing. We need to toe the line of our ancestors in living up to the Universal Vedic values as well as continue the lineage and perpetuate the knowledge by disseminating it down to our children.

• Let’s adopt Pitri Yajna in our daily life, perform real Shraadha i.e. care for living parents as an act of faith, respect and gratitude; and Tarpan, i.e. keep them content …not when they are no longer among us.

Gratitude is a beneficial action that will multiply our blessings. We need to practice it daily to enhance our levels of happiness (sukh), peace (shaanti) and prosperity (samriddhi).
