GOPIO Qld Holds Iconic India Day Fair 2018 BRISBANE, 18 August 2018, GOPIO Qld Chapter held it’s iconic India Day Fair in the world renowned Roma Street Parklands (the largest Subtropical gardens in a city in the world).

This

renowned

fair

has

grown in size and attracts all communities; it is designed to bring communities together while showcasing Indian Culture and d cuisine.

Many Indian community organisations take part in the India Day fair community parade.

Invited guests are treated to a VIP reception; they too join in the parade, which finishes in front the impressive amphitheatre stage The beautiful weather held out and the event was attended by over 10,000 people. The

organisations have come forward to raise the much needed funds for this worthy cause, I say the more the merrier as long as the funds and goods reach the needy and is not lost in administration. I would personally urge everyone to leave their differences aside and come together, dig deep and give generously for this cause.

Secondly I must pay respect late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on 16th August 2018, We lost the Ajatshatru of India Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Many hearts are filled with deep emotions as Shri Atalji didn’t belong to politics only.

His personality crossed many shades and made his mark as a poet, journalist and above all a much loved statesman. a great loss to the nation and to humanity, he will be missed by the Diaspora, as he had played a pivotal role in the connection of the Diaspora to motherland.

He has been a guest of GOPIO International, on many a occasion, GOPIO International held a condolence meeting on our virtual their platform on 24th August at 11.30 pm US time, of GOPIO International executive Members, Council Chairs and Life Members,

Thirdly congratulations to GOPIO Queensland for another magnificent India Day Fair, this iconic celebrations keeps on growing every year, this year the event was overshadowed by the passing away of Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee , and a minutes silence was observed during the formalities.

Overall the vent was a huge success, the stage just looked magnificent, there is no other comparable stage in Brisbane, the amphitheatre is nicely located in the pristine parkland, the Sun does get bit challenging during mid day to the discomfort of the VIPS specially, and the committee is contemplating shifting the official opening times. The rough and tilting terrain makes it hard for the Stall holders, but the ones that do come do brisk business with never ending queues in front of their stalls.

Multicultural business awards, some of you may remember that we , Brisbane Indian Times used run the two combined into one until State and local government took over one section each. While we are on the topic of congratulations, may I congratulate the finalist of IABCA 2018; I have had the privilege of attending all three of the above mentioned functions On a different note congratulations to mala Mehta on celebrating thirty one years of Hindi school , it is her untiring effort that has seen Hindi included in NSW curriculum , the annual Hindi Divas was a testament to the community support that she receives for commitment to Hindi Language. Her event is always supported by Indian Consulate.

The Australian Flag turned 117 and I was privileged to be part of the Flag raising ceremony and the celebrations that followed at Brisbane City Hall. It is an important part of our history and we should proudly support that, more emphasis needs to be placed in schools for teaching Australian history. There are many aspects that are forgotten.

Congratulations to Police commissioner for the wonder interfaith dinner, the event which started of quite small ahs now grown significantly and fills Greek Club to capacity.

Brian Adams our Mc extraordinaire never fails to amaze. Members of many faith communities represented in Queensland were present at the annual dinner.

Lastly, wishing everyone all the best for Janamastmi , once again many celebrations all over Brisbane, I tried to attend as many as physically possible, I must mention ISKCON Brisbane for the special invite and for putting on a spectacular event , for them this is one of the major events , the atmosphere was just amazing , it felt like you where in Vrindavan. The organising committee must be commended for the smooth running of the big celebration.

I will pen off my Mentioning Janeth Deen, and congratulating her on her OAM , a worthy recent who has been instrumental in so many people receiving the recognition.

Changes to the Training Benchmark Requirements THE Australian Government has implemented the new Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) which came into effect on 12 August 2018, after the legislation was passed in Parliament on 22 May 2018. Employers sponsoring skilled workers under both temporary and permanent employer sponsored regimes, will now be required to pay a levy to this fund.

This fund has replaced the previous training benchmark A and B requirements, which was to contribute either 2% of the business payroll towards a training fund or 1% of payroll towards training Australian staff.

The amount of the levy payable will depend upon the size of the business sponsoring the employee.

For businesses with an Annual Turnover of Greater than 10 million:• T he levy for TSS visas will be $1,800 per year or part thereof • For ENS and RSMS applications will be a one-off payment of $5,000.

For business has an annual turnover of less than 10 million:• T he levy for TSS visas will be $1,200 per year or part thereof • For ENS and RSMS applications will be a one-off payment of $3,000.

Refund of Levy Paid The SAF levy or part thereof can be refunded in certain circumstances, including where a certain application is refused or where an employee does not commence work with their employer or ceases work within the first 12 months.

A FUNDAMENTAL requirement for anybody who wishes to grow on the spiritual path is to create an undeviated flow of energy towards the one and only goal in life – to attain to the highest and not settle for anything less than that.

If there is a person who is capable of channelising himself without any break, he is a blessed one.

But rarely do people come like that. Most people lead their lives only in jerks – few moments of running, then stopping or may be going backwards. This is how life goes waste for most people.

Ramakrishna has described the role of a guru in a very nice way. He describes three types of gurus who are like three different classes of doctors. There is one type of medical man who, when called upon, looks at the patients, feels his pulse, then prescribes the necessary medicine and asks them to take them. If the patient declines, they just go away without troubling themselves

further about the matter. In the same way, there are some religious teachers who don’t care much whether their teachings are valued, acted upon or not.

Doctors of the second type not only ask the patients to take their medicine but they go further. They expostulate. They leave no stone unturned to make other people walk the ways of righteousness and truth by means of gentle persuasion.

The third and the highest kind of doctors would proceed to use force with the patients, in case he shows any reluctance to take the medicines. Similarly, there are some gurus who would use force, if necessary, on their disciples, with a view to making them walk on the path to the ultimate.

Why Ramakrishna considers the last one as the highest is because he takes the risk of becoming unpopular. He takes the risk of being labeled “cruel.”

Why this kind of teachers exists or why this is needed is because, by your own nature, you are like a frog.

Whichever way he sees a mosquito, he goes in that direction. This way, you can’t reach anywhere.

Once you are on the spiritual path, once you have seen what is the goal of your life, this sniffing around should stop because there are so many things that smell good on the way. Wherever something smells good if you turn, you are not going to get anywhere. It is not that if you cannot do anything else in your life, you can be spiritual, that is not so. If you can take up anything and do it in this world, then there is a possibility that you may be fit for spirituality. Not otherwise.

seven years and the public attendance has grown steadily since then. It is a free public event in a true festival atmosphere, with stage performances, food stalls etc.

The stage performances included show casing of costumes and dances from different States of India, a children’s parade of Nation showcased Heroes of India with patriotic songs. Dances from many regions of India were on show, eg, Bhangra, Garba, Giddah, Lavni, Tollywood, Bollywood, Kathak, and Haryanvi to name a few.

The evening performance was our show stopper, a free live concert by Pradeep Sran (from cutie pie fame) a singer from India and open air dancing by the attendees.

The day concluded with a beautiful fireworks display – a perfect end to a perfect day.

Ganesh – Bestower of Success Lord Ganesh is a prominent Hindu deity, renowned as Vighna-vinashak, the destroyer of obstacles. He is known by hundreds of other names including Ganapati, Gajanan, Lambodar and Ekdanta. He is endowed with benediction to get first reverence during a traditional Hindu worship of deities.

“Shree Ganeshay Namah” is a core Mantra recited at the beginning of any meaningful endeavour performed by a devout Hindu. It is believed that pronouncing this Mantra at the beginning of a new venture removes obstructions that may be encountered during its implementation.

Lord Ganesh is a son of lord Shiva and goddess Parvati.

A number of legends are common about the birth of Ganesh. According to the most popular story, Parvati realised that she needed her own loyal sentry to guard her during her private moments.

She created a model of a boy from the sandal-paste and scurf scrubbed from her body during bathing and infused life into it. She posted the boy at the gate and asked him not to allow anyone inside while she was washing herself.

Soon afterwards, Shiva, her husband, came from his wandering and tried to enter his abode. Ganesh prevented him from doing so, as Parvati was

still bathing. Shiva was surprised, and demanded an explanation. Ganesh relayed his mother’s instructions to Shiva, but he remained unsatisfied, and asked his followers, also known as Ganas, to forcibly remove the boy.

They were unsuccessful. Other deities including Brahma and Vishnu came and tried to mediate but could not succeed. Finally, in anger, Shiva beheaded the boy.

Hearing the tumult, Parvati came out of the bathroom and found her son’s head severed. She cried and became very angry. She was pacified on conditions that her son would be revived to life and made foremost amongst celestials.

To revive the boy, Shiva’s followers brought a head cut off from a sleeping elephant and placed it on the severed neck of the boy. Assembled celestials infused life into the body, and the boy with an elephant head became alive.

The boy was made the leader of the Ganas and named Ganesh. The word Ganapati expresses the same meaning. With the face of an elephant, Ganesh is also is called Gajanan, “the one with the elephant face”.

According to another legend, Lord Vishnu appeared as a priest before Parvati while she was asleep, and begged for food.

Both Shiva and Parvati

welcomed him and asked him if he had any other desire. Being impressed by their sincerity, the priest told them that he would like to become their son. This wish was granted, and the priest turned into their tiny baby, lying on the bed with Parvati.

All celestials came to see and bless the baby, including Shani, the planet Saturn. On Parvati’s insistence, Shani looked at the baby face to bless him. But by the effect of Shani’s glance, the baby’s head vanished. Parvati wept immensely at the loss of her son. On the request of Laxmi and other deities, Vishnu, whose incarnation the child was, flew on his mount Garuda. He brought a freshly cut head of an elephant, placed it on the baby’s neck and revived him to life.

Skand, also known as Kartikey, is a brother of Ganesh. He is the commander in chief of celestial forces. His mount is a peacock. Ganesh travels on a mouse.

Once, the deities gifted Shiva and Parvati a divine fruit and told them that whoever ate it would gain supreme knowledge and immortality. Both Ganesh and Skand wished to eat the fruit and started arguing over who deserved it more. To resolve the issue, their parents devised a competition. Both Ganesh and Skand were required to

encircle the earth three times and whoever completed the circumambulations first, was to be declared the winner, and awarded the fruit. Skand happily agreed knowing that his mount is fast enough to allow him to lead the race.

Skand started on his peacock, whereas Ganesh remained at home. He made his parents sit on their seats together, walked around them and claimed victory. Upon questioning, Ganesh explained that his mother and father are like the earth and sky. By encircling them, he had fulfilled the condition of the competition. His parents were enchanted by this explanation and awarded him the divine fruit to eat.

The event displays Ganesh’s ingenuity.

Another version of this episode relates to Ganesh’s wedding. When both Ganesh and Skand turned to a marriageable age, Shiva and Parvati thought of arranging their wedding. The competition of encircling the earth was devised to decide who should be married first. As the winner, Ganesh was married first. His wives are Riddhi, prosperity, and Siddhi, adeptness, both the daughters of Prajapati, a divine lord. Shubh, auspiciousness and Labh, profit are described as Ganesh’s sons.

FIJI Senior Citizens Assn of Qld again organised a successful Seniors Week Celebration on 19th August,2018 at Multicultural Hub in Annerley. The diverse communities came together and celebrated this important event along with other dignitaries such as Hon Mark Bailey MP Minister for Transport, Cr Ian McKenzie, Indian Consul Archana Singh, Prof Sarva-Daman Singh, Anthony Shorten and others.

Mr Surendra Prasad said the program started with

We also organised raffles to raise fund for the farmers who are facing serve drought at some places for last 9 years. We raised $325 dollars through raffles and was top up $1000 by one of our member Mr Ram Karan. Total fund raised was $1325. This raffle was possible through the kind raffle prize donations from

the Mahabharata in his mind, he looked for a writer to scribe his composition.

On the advice of Brahma, Vyas approached Ganesh with a request to write his work. Ganesh agreed to this proposition on a condition. During writing, dictation should continue uninterrupted, from start to finish, without letting any pause for his pen.

Vyas agreed, but with a counter condition. Ganesh should write the text with full understanding of the dictated subject matter. Both accepted the conditions.

While transcribing the Mahabharata, the pen that Ganesh was using once broke. To continue writing nonstop, he broke one of his tusks and started writing with it. His name Ekdanta, or one tusked, relates to this event.

Another legend about Ekdanta relates to his encounter with sage Parashuram. Once Shiva was in meditation on the Kailash Mountain. Ganesh was guarding his ashram, the place of meditation.

Sage Parashuram came to his ashram to see Shiva but Ganesh prevented him from doing so. A fight broke out between them. Parashuram was overwhelmed by Ganesh’s power. Finally, Parashuram attacked Ganesh with his famous axe. Shiva had gifted that axe to Parashuram. To uphold the reputation of the weapon, Ganesh accepted the axe attack on his tusk, and allowed one of his tusks to break.

On one occasion, Kuber, the king of wealth, came to Kailash to invite Shiva for a lunch. He wanted to show off his abundant wealth. Shiva realised his vanity and declined to go, but suggested that he take Ganesh instead. Ganesh went to lunch with Kuber

Finally Ganesh was fed rice provided by his mother Parvati. Only then his hunger was satiated. The name Lambodar or long belly relates to this event.

The fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapad month (August – September) is celebrated as Ganeshotsav, a festival dedicated to Ganesh.

Hindus celebrate it all over the world, however it has special significance in Maharastra, India.

Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a great freedom fighter, inspired the people of Maharastra to celebrate it collectively as a community festival. Joint celebration of Ganeshotsav encouraged them to unite and resist injustice together.

Ganesh is worshipped with Lakshmi during the festival of Diwali. His worship together with Lakshmi signifies the importance of maintaining balance between intelligence, denoted by Ganesh, and arrogance arising out of wealth, symbol of Lakshmi.

A large number of temples dedicated to Ganesh are found all over the world. He is displayed alone as well as with Shiva, Parvati and Skand. In some pictures, he is shown with his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi.

Ganesh is portrayed with four hands, long belly and elephant face seated on a decorated seat. His gentle and auspicious appearance showers blessing on all those who worship him with devotion.

Our theme and goal is to make God personal and real. God is not an imagination of human heart that can be crafted into an

idol. Therefore key to the knowledge of God is to have a humble and open to heart.

This humility and hunger to know your creator will be satisfied through the words of Gospel writer Doctor Luke.

Today, let us look at the meaning and understand

how and where to find the “Knowledge of Salvation”.

Mukti is an Indian word that can be translated into Salvation God offers to all mankind. Dr Luke’s Gospel is compelling and comforting. After due diligence and careful examination of all the accounts of early first

century events in Israel, we are invited by Dr Luke to the knowledge of Salvation. The birth Child Jesus is Supernatural and His purpose is a Super Rescue Mission; to save all humanity from their sin and death.

Salvation means, the act of saving or protecting from harm, evil and destruction.

Knowledge means, acquaintance with truth, facts or principle as from the study of the matter or subject. Therefore knowledge of salvation opens the way to encounter your Creator. The Holy Bible states in simple words that all mankind has sinned.

We all have fallen short of God’s expectation of living life with moral purity. We have gone far away from the relationship with our creator by creating our own religions and traditions.

When one sheep wonders away from its shepherd, many of the flock follow the lost sheep. This is the condition of lost humanity in search of salvation.

Because of great tender mercy of God the knowledge of the salvation is made simple. God of the Bible is gracious and compassionate, full of love and forgiveness. But we have to repent from our own ways; our hearts have to be right before God. Religious activity will keep us busy with our head and hands, but heart and mind more important. We need clear conscious before God; it is like asking God give us a new heart and mind. You can have the knowledge and assurance of salvation through a sincere prayer in Jesus name.

Please open your heart,

mind and mouth and speak this prayer. “Dear God, thank you for the Knowledge of Salvation through your Word. Today, open the eyes of heart and help me to see your love and forgiveness. I want to turn from my own ways and selfcatered life style. Forgive my sins. Cleanse my mind and heart. Renew my spirit to follow the life you have for me. I believe that Jesus came and died for my sins.

And Jesus rose from the death to guide our feet to the path of peace.

Please observe a two-minute silence

COULD you please observe silence for two minutes In those two minutes I humbly ask you not to force yourself to think or not think anything... just flow with your thoughts and observe your breath pattern. Just observe breath, Soma Nair ‘Som’ observe with a deep concern and concentration so much so -you should be able to tell the design, the method the speed of the breath.

This was a conscious silence and conscious thoughts too to some extent. Even then did you feel the difference in rhythm of the breathing?

The first evident observation of effect of thought pattern is on our breath pattern. Our thoughts affect our breath which is the most important force of life...prana When thoughts are positive, calm and resigned our breath is smooth. A little deeper, a little more reaching, a little more available to each cell. The more relaxed our thoughts are the more beautiful the breathing becomes.

And the vice versa.

The more relaxed and deep we breathe, the calmer becomes the mind.

What happens when we are hyper? Angry?

Running. Rushing.. Anxious. The breath changes... we are breathing fast. Skipping breath and choking to some extent. Thought pattern is disturbed. It becomes a web. There are so many things to be done...so many emotions to be dealt with. We rush up and decide that we have no time to waste, not at

least on breathing... the brain quickly makes an arrangement... increases the speed of breath... it does not want to deprive itself of oxygen.

It needs more oxygen to deal with stress. So we have a breathing pattern where inhalation and exhalation both are rapid, irregular and uneven. I call it Breathless breathing.

Now let us look at food part. When our thoughts are weird digestion stops, digestive juices do not make themselves available for digestion. We are not aware of the speed with which we gulp our food down our throats. It can be anything. Sugar laden food and salt laden food. Absorption stops. I will not go into detail on that everybody knows.

Over past four decades, all the emphasis has been laid on food for physical health.

Eat this for bones, this for muscles, and this for digestion and so on. Very little has been said about what to do about thoughts. It has been suggested that all the power...all the nutrients come from food alone. All the energy comes from food alone. It is sad that there has been a hidden fear instilling mechanism that keeps playing with the minds of common man.

X food has no cholesterol X food has no calories X food is low fat That clearly indicates that body and its system has no power at all. Everything lies in the processed food that is being sold to us. We eat this food which is infested with fear. Soon a time is going to come and the researchers would force on our coming generations when they will tell us which part of the apple, banana has to be eaten The ultimate human machine has been ignored. How this human digestive system

secrets juices. Enzymes... how food gets converted to blood and nutrients absorbed.

Scientists have not been able to develop a similar machine where they put a cup of best quality low saturated fats, a cup of healthy carbs, a cup of cholesterol free yogurt, a cup of freshly squeezed juices and it gets converted to best quality blood.

Food has a lot to do with our health but food has to come from the right source...plants... fruits...nuts...dairy...and it should not be wrapped in fear.

Thought pattern has been ignored. Have you observed on a happy day, we have so much energy...we might not feel the need of eating anything. On a gloomy day where does that energy go in spite of our eating all the so called healthy food?

The Power of Thoughts: Our thoughts and emotions do affect our health the most. Negative emotions can sap our energy by causing blockages. They can create imbalances and chronic stress and upset body’s hormone system. They delete the brain chemicals required for happiness and damage the immune system.

Thinking is good but overthinking is bad.

There may be many things in the world that seem negative to us but that are not meant to hurt us. People may say things that they do not mean at all. Do you sincerely believe that when people speak good of you that they mean every word of it? I have heard people say a lot of praise worthy things about people whom they do not know at all and it is true vice versa Do not let negative thoughts overpower you and damage your peace. It needs a little practice though. The best way is not repeat the negative words that were spoken to you, even

in your mind. Repetition strengthens them.

Focus on how to protect yourself from their harmful effect instead on focusing how to make the person who uttered them realise that they were wrong. You would not be able to do that. You cannot work on others. You can only work on yourself.

I have treated many severe skin diseases by changing their thought pattern.

If you closely observe any disease it has a relation to the thoughts. There are people who keep thinking. My family gets cancer. I am genetically weak. I am a sickly person, winter makes me sick. And so on The mind manifests the things. That is why the whole medical science when cannot really diagnose a disease puts its blame on stress... what is stress. Stress is thought pattern.

So whenever you are sick. Whenever you are not feeling good. Change your thoughts. Be more positive as you need more power. More energy to fight your disease. Stand by your body and support it. The only support you can give and that matters is to believe... to believe and assert that your mind has tremendous power. It cannot get affected by the small turbulences and there is no big storm at all.

Half the problem is solved if you come across a doctor who is sympathetic. People travel far off places if they have an assurance to get the cure. They would believe in the ash wrapped in a paper.

Early detection will save us. It is good to diagnose but it is not good to over diagnose.

The world is getting over diagnosed.

Go and see a doctor with complete belief in yourself.

Janamastami 2018 by ISKCON APSQ- Annual General Meeting On any ordinary day you drive down Jennifer Street in Seventeen Miles Rock, and things will look Pretty Ordinary. On Monday 3rd September the scene had changed, everyone was greeted by a celebration so big, which was spilling out on to the roads. It was Janamastami , a very special and significant day. It literally means “the birth on the eight day” and it celebrates the sacred birth of Lord Krishna- the revered and much loved avatar of GOD to billions of people around the world .

Imagine the biggest and most festive birthday celebration and then times that by a hundred. That was the experience at the International Society of Krishna Consciousness’s (ISKCON) Janamastami celebrations. The biggest of such celebration in Brisbane with growing attendance every year, the event is well organised and managed in the true essence and spirit of Janamastami There is a main stage which featured of an entertainment program that kept audiences enthralled for hours – traditional Indian dances, ceremonial offerings, captivating dramas and soul-stirring music. If sitting in one spot is not your thing, then you had a chance to wander around at all the stalls. One could easily transport oneself to

Opening description: Every year the Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla School holds its annual concert on the Saturday nearest Guru Purnima. This year’s 11th edition was held on July 28th at Queensland Multicultural Centre.

It is always a heart warming evening, rejoicing in the beauty of traditional classical tabla compositions played in harmonious groups of all levels, unmatched by other tabla schools around the country.

The organisers are grateful for the unstinting support of Brisbane Indian Times and Australian Indian Radio.

Dozens of volunteers spent months working towards this festival – it’s a day they

serve tirelessly so they can give without hindrance.

Janamastami is a time where one experiences the warmth, love and care of the ISKCON devotees.

Special guests included, Honorary Council for India in Queensland, Mrs Archana Singh, Mr Umesh ChandraQueensland Multicultural Council, Mrs. Usha Chandra- Immediate Past President GOPIO Qld, Anoop Kumar - FICQ, Ms Jessica Pugh Mp, members of the police force etc.

Members of ISKCON greeted the special guest at the registration desk and looked after them while they were at the celebrations.

Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Queensland had its Annual General Meeting at Queensland Vedic Cultural Centre on Sunday 26 August.

Shri Jitendra Deo thanked all the members for their support for last 8 years in his capacity as the President of Sabha. He also thanked all the organisations for their continued support and donations. It was proud moment for the Sabha members as the Queensland Vedic Cultural Centre project phase one is completed. The community hall has capacity for 300

people. The large open are for eating and socialising and plenty of parking makes the centre very attractive for variety of purposes.

The president thanked all the members, well-wishers and other organisations for getting behind this project and making it successful.

Reclaiming, retelling and restoring Fiji’s distorted past Book Review-Enslaved in Paradise:

RAJENDRA Prasad’s second book on Fiji’s untold history was launched by Indian High Commissioner, His Excellency Sanjiv Kohli at New Lynn Community Centre, Auckland on Sunday 12 August 2018.

Enslaved in Paradise: A History of Mammoth Betrayals of Fijians by the British, Chiefs and Leaders of Fiji -1876-2006 (2018) refutes Fiji’s history and retells it from perspective of victims.

Prasad fearlessly and boldly declares wickedness of the colonial government and chiefly collusions. He reveals many self-serving, self-centred and arrogant leaders, who had ravaged Fiji’s political landscape, but escaped scrutiny. And they eventually degenerated Fiji permanently into the ‘coup coup land label.

The book also tells how the British sabotaged the return of Indians to save the sugar industry and Fiji’s economy in the early 1920s and discredits a historical lie that Indians opted to stay back and that the British were magnanimous in granting them the right to live in Fiji; The book is an eye-opener

on the biggest lie ever told.

It reveals how indigenous chiefs, in 1963, concocted a lie to unite the Taukeis, misleading simple common ITaukei about non-existent fears of the Indo-Fijian threat to land ownership, customs and customary rights.

The book also gives an opportunity for Indo-Fijians to objectively evaluate how the failure of leadership denied them respect, justice, equality and dignity, and also how their own folly and wrong choices have been the reasons for their sufferings.

It provides irrefutable evidence the Taukei chiefly system did incalculable harm to the social, economic and political development of the Taukeis and Fiji. All the while, the blame for their poverty was mischievously attributed to Indo-Fijians.

It is a must reading for ITaukei, especially the new generation, to get an appreciation of how a system of Chiefly rule was the biggest shackles for common ITaukei, and how their poverty was selfinflicted.

The book, in ten chapters makes a gripping reading, and reclaims Fiji’s history never told by any author in that language and passion. In the first chapter, appropriately titled “My Quest for Justice” Prasad reproduces three selfexplanatory letters he wrote to Colonial Sugar Refining Company (CSR), Australian and British governments respectively, and their replies. They eloquently sum up the pain, suffering and sacrifices of Girmitiya.

The question that arises

is, why this was not done by any of those famous Girmitiya lawyers who became rich from an infighting community?

And how about academics or Girmitiya businessmen?

Why it took a simple poor but passionate author from a sleepy rustic village to do the unthinkable?

The book also answers many questions that it raises.

Was Ratu Mara really an advocate of multiracialism?

Who was the best or worst of ITaukei leaders: Ratu Sukuna, Ratu Mara, Rabuka or Qarase? And among Indo-Fijians? A.D Patel, Koya, Jai Ram Reddy, or Chaudhry? Was Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) really that great?

What were the reasons for racial tensions and political instability in Fiji? Who was the greatest Girmitiya who did enormous good for the oppressed people and whom over 95 per cent of IndoFijians do not know?

You will be shocked and annoyed with some of the answers this very wellresearched book gives and substantiates.

And where does Frank Bainimarama stand?

Some may feel that the author Rajendra Prasad is advocating for Fiji First Government and Frank Bainimarama. Nothing is further from truth. He has never met Bainimarama, his deputy or any of the other movers and shakers in Fiji First. His quest for justice began with research for his first book in late 1990s. This was long before Bainimarama came on the political scene. And

that self-financed research of some seven years culminated in publishing of Tears in Paradise in 2004.

As they say, once a writer, always a writer. Some more information came on hand, he had some unfinished business, and that extensive investigations climaxed in the blockbuster and bombshell that shatters so many historical myths. And that is Enslaved in Paradise.

And what motivated Prasad? He was no academic and neither had any privileges of academic freebies. It is a non-academic writing, deep from the heart and without desire of any academic rewards. It was done to seek justice through untold bare history unable to be told from the confines of a university.

I have grieved in the stillness of the night and, in the deep peal of thunder, I have heard the muffled cries of our ancestors, imploring us, their descendants, to ensure that their pain and suffering during the indenture period in Fiji, was not lost in the mist of time.

The book tells what happened in 2006 through extra-judicial means could not be done through democratic process. The Bainimarama initiative liberated Indo-Fijians from state-sponsored racial discrimination and granted them equal citizenry. In addition, it stopped the exploitation of the commoner Taukeis by chiefs who benefited hugely through the entrenched legislations. Significantly, the dissolution of the GCC in 2012 meant it could no longer interfere in Fiji politics, leaving its governance to the elected representatives.

Author’s plea in the final chapter sums it all for the forthcoming Fiji election: The 2018 election is the watershed, which would decide the political trajectory of Fiji. If Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama fails, Fiji could resurrect the

politics of ethnicity, which would be disastrous for Fiji. In him, Fiji had a true indigenous Fijian leader who cared for everyone, irrespective of race, religion or culture, lifting Indo-Fijians, in particular, from the ignominy of being the second-class and being the most despised citizens of Fiji. I sincerely hope Fiji overwhelmingly rejects those who profess restoration of ethnic seats, ethnic voting and the Great Council of Chiefs, including politicians and parties that masquerade as champions, hiding their villainous deeds and intents.

What is also unprecedented is his direct plea to misinformed iTaukei people.

Never had Indo-Fijians ever discussed, conspired or even thought of disposing them of their land, culture, customs or customary rights. Ironically, this was done by their trusted people and savors: …the Europeans appropriated over 500,000 acres of prime land through deceit and lies, facilitated by your chiefs…

Your chiefs, who posed as God’s chosen ones to rule over your lives, deliberately lied to secure their social, economic and political advantage, creating racial discord to benefit from disharmony between you and us. The coups (1987, 2000) executed behind the façade of your rights and interests were sheer illusion, which did not benefit you but only those who concocted deceit and lies.

He compared their changed status after 2006 when an inclusive government, advocating equality and unity in diversity, saw unmatched social, economic and political advancement.

Oddly, the military coup of 5 December 2006 brought change, which liberated the people of Fiji from draconian acts of defilement in the governance of the nation that continued for

over a century. The people of Fiji became hostage to the villainy of those who hid behind the democratic façade to violate the freedom and rights of Fijians.

History of Fiji was manipulated and conveniently missed all atrocities. British treated Indians as economic slaves and threw them in front of ITaukei when they left.

Indians were indeed treated as derelicts of the empire, used as scaffolding in building, and abandoned when the building stands up.

This book tells of all those missed stories and thus fills this historical chasm.

It is a must reading for all Fijians. You will be enlightened, shocked - and angered.

The author’s caliber of research, depth of thought, tenor of writing and aptitude of language would be cause of envy to most, if not all Indo-Fijian historians in Fiji universities. The only historian deemed capable is retired Professor Brij Lal, who stands tallest, Prasad comes the second, and I struggle to see even a distant third.

Universities in Fiji could redeem this deficiency by offering honorary doctorate to a non-academic author, Rajendra Prasad and volunteering Fiji launch of this brilliant book. This would bestow more honour and dignity to the institution with initiative, rather than to Prasad who does not expect any kudos for what he deems was his obligation to his aggrieved forebears.

Over to you, University of the South Pacific (USP), University of Fiji and Fiji National University (FNU) respectively. You may ignore this plea at your peril –and retain your right to be enslaved by ignorance in paradise!

A peep into British India

Dhaval Vyas, Ahmedabad, India RIGHT from the beginning of their relationship with India, the British, who had come as traders and had become rulers and administrators, had influenced the economic and political systems of the country.

Their impact on the cultural and social life of India was, however, gradual. Till 1813, they followed a policy of non-interference in the social and cultural life of the Indians. Yet, changes were taking place in these fields (the social life of Indians).

These changes related to education, the condition of women, the caste system and various social practices.

There were never really that many British in India. At the height of British imperialism in the 1930s, there were only 167,000 Europeans in all of South Asia. British in India were characterized by their English mother tongue, Christian religion, European lifestyle at home, Western clothes and employment in administration and service positions.

The invention of the steam ship really opened up travel between Britain and India.

The first run of the P&O steamer around the Cape of Good Hope took 92 days to travel from Southampton, England to Calcutta, with seven days spent taking in coal.

In 1876, the British parliament ruled that India should become an empire and Queen Victoria was named Empress. A viceroy ruled India. When King George VI (1936-53) visited India he was greeted as the King of England and the Emperor of India.

Members of the British upper-class were besides themselves that an upstart like Robert Clive— the “unpromising son of a penurious country gentlemen”—could spend a few years in India and amass more wealth than landowning families had accumulated in centuries of farmers. Among many upper class families in Britain, the eldest son was expected

to run the family estate and the second eldest son was expected to go off to India to seek his fortune. [Source: Pico Iyer, Smithsonian magazine, January 1988] Even 10-pound-a-year clerks in India had a good life. Expecting to make fortunes later in their careers as traders and merchant, they took out loans and lived a lavish lifestyle way beyond what they could have enjoyed at home. Generally they were only required to work between 9:00am and noon. The rest of the day was often spent napping, drinking, gambling, womanizing and smoking opium and hashish. Those that made money often did so by hiring cargo space on ships to ship goods like to textiles, spices, artifacts and opium to England.

After reports of the fortunes made by Clive and others filtered back to England, it seemed that everyone wanted a position in India. Bribes were paid to London officials to secure positions. The situation got so out of hand that, as one member of parliament put it, traders «rolling one after another; wave after wave; and there is nothing before the eyes of the natives but an endless hopeless prospect of new birds of prey and passage.»

The British settlements in India were ruled by the British Governor-inCouncil. These governors enjoyed a lifestyle that rivaled the Mughal emperors. State dinners featured 600 different dishes and numerous courses, each ushered in with a trumpet. When the governor of Bombay left his palace in 1700 he was carried in a palanquin escorted by 80 servants waving silver wands. One of these governor, Elihu Yale (Madras, 1687-92), used part of his fortune to start a small college in New Haven, Connecticut. The members of the newly formed Indian Civil Service were educated men of taste.

«Where the rough and ready merchants of old had lived like local princelings,” Iyer wrote, “the new arrivals preferred to live like wellheeled Britons. Tom-toms were gradually replaced by fife-and-drum corps, curries

by English dishes and local clothes by the latest (or almost latest) London fashions. Country houses complete with tidy gardens began to spring up.” There were also some interesting mergings of cultures. First class train compartments in the 1880s were outfit with hookahs and hashish.

Servants fixed tea and shined boots.

Most of the British residents were male. With no English wives to tie them down, these Englishmen were fond of attending parties which featured food, drink, opium and fun with dancing girls who usually doubled as prostitutes. It was customary for unmarried British men to keep an Indian mistresshousekeeper who would also raise their children.

After the Suez canal opened in 1868, and travel was shorter and easier, married English men and their families became more common and more British women arrived and married the single English men.

Calcutta became a British version of a Mughal palace.

Civil servants were brought in on gilded palanquins with silver bells and embroidered curtains to Calcutta’s theaters, where they watched English farces from private box with silk canopies. A typical bachelor in 1780 had 65 servants, and no soldier would go to battle without a steward, cook, housekeeper, washerman, a mistress and 15 servants who carried his bed, tent, luggage, wine, tables, live poultry and other necessities. [Source: Pico Iyer, Smithsonian magazine, January 1988] The well-heeled English crowd would spend their morning going to the racetrack; their early afternoons napping in the sweltering heat; their late afternoon cruising the embankment in their carriages; and their evening playing card games and

attending balls and dinner parties. Ice cream was delivered from Maine in clipper ships and unmarried girls from England were brought over in cool weather on what later was nicknamed the Fishing Fleet (unmarried returned Empties took the journey home).

Drinks were kept cool with ice made in a novel way.

In the early 18th century Indians were able to make ice when the temperature was above freezing as a result of cooling evaporation.

The water was poured into bowls in the ground where it froze as some of the water evaporated during the night.

In 1828 over 120 tons of ice was produced in this fashion. The supply, which was stored in pits covered by thatch roofs, lasted more than six months.

In the intense Indian summers, the English gentry and their servants fled the cities for the hill stations in the cooler mountains.

The British built 96 hill stations in India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Burma.

The Dutch built some in Indonesia, the French in Vietnam and the Americans in the Philippines. Most were built between 1820 and 1885. Simla, the largest hill station, was the capital of British India for most of the year and headquarters for the imperial army.

The first hill stations were built in 1820 after it was discovered that British soldiers fighting Gurhkas in the foothills of the Himalayas felt better and came down with less diseases in the high altitude than soldiers stationed at low altitudes.

The hill stations began as sanatoriums and convalescent centers, but it wasn’t long before they became places where healthy upper class people went to escape the heat of the lowland plains. Most of the hill stations were located above 6,000 feet because that seemed to be the ceiling of malaria-carrying mosquitos. Naturally cool

air proved to be the perfect remedy for a world where air conditioning, insect repellant and antibiotics had not been invented.

Most hill stations were built on ridge tops. Now, while this had its advantages in fighting disease. It was not practical for supplying water, especially when trees were cut down and ground water levels drops. In the early days there were no scenic train rides. Visitors were brought up the slopes in bullock carts, on horseback, or in sedan chairs. A few walked.

The hill station were complete towns with sanitariums, churches, cottages, clubs, libraries and activities. Social activities went on almost around the clock and status and rank was rigidly defined.

The hill stations were set up like towns back home.

They featured comfortable cottages, steepled churches, clubs, schools, tearooms, and gardens with European flowers.

Hill station residents lived quite well. Dinners often features a large selection of wines, ales and spirits, a choice of soups, fish, joints of Bengal mutton, Chinese capons, Keddah fowls, Sangora ducks, Yorkshire hams, Java potatoes and Malay ibis, rice, curry and fruit. Some Indians were invited. Describing the bejeweled maharajahs in Simla, Aldous Huxley wrote,” At the Viceroy’s evening parties the diamonds were so large they looked like stage gems. It was impossible to believe that pearls in the million-pound necklaces were the genuine excrement of oysters.”

Missionary women were often carried about in palanquins resting on the shoulders of a half dozen Indian servants and the men were pulled in covered carts drawn by teams of bullocks.

The journey from Madras to Madurui took 20 days by palanquin.

As the servants carried the women they chanted

“She’s not heavy, Putterum, Puuterum, Carry her softly, Puuterum, Putterum, Nice little lady, Puuterum, Putterum, Carry her gently.”

They usually set up numerous primary schools and, if they were there long enough to get primary school graduates, a secondary school. Low caste parents sent their children to the missionary schools because there was no other way for them to get an education. Hindus sent their children to the secondary school to learn English so they had better chances of getting jobs. Many Christian converts were Untouchables.

They had more to gain from converting to Christianity than other Hindus.

Missionaries had to protect themselves against snakes, scorpions, white ants, winged ants and bats.

One missionary described a huge spider that made a home in his shoe. It «was nearly the size of the palm of my hand...olive brown and covered with a soft down.”

Many people died of malaria and deaths at a rate of 60 a day from cholera was not uncommon in some cities.

The missionaries also had to put up wit dust storms, torrential monsoons and 130°F heat that lasted for weeks at a time. “Between the rising and setting of the sun,” one missionary wrote, “a foreigner should not leave his house without the shelter of a carriage or palanquin or a thick umbrella.”

Rotary Club of Brisbane International sends wheelchairs to Fiji

IT WAS indeed a very proud and humbling moment for the Rotary Club of Brisbane International (RCBI), when it carried out its first Interntional project in Fiji. Nd what made it all that more important as that our

very District 9630 Governor and a Labasa born Rotarian, Mr Jitendra Prasad together with his wife, Mrs Nirmala Prasad, were there to officially hand over the brand new wheelchairs to the Rotary Club of Suva.

RCBI is currently headed by Mr Abdul Azam with the support of its able board members. His previous incumbent, Mr Raj Padarath, has been the chief driver behind this project and was supported at the ground level in Fiji by none other than Mr Arvin Datt, owner of 3SA Carpets in Fiji.

RCBI is overwhelmed by this first International project and that too in the first year of full membership. This is the testimony of the commitment, hard work and the passion towards the underprivileged and needy ones in Fiji from the group of Rotarian who are either former Fiji residents or have families in Fiji, says Mr. Prasad.

Mr. Jitendra Prasad says that this would not have been possible without the support and the sacrifice of the members of RCBI who has carried out many projects in Brisbane Australia, including monthly Food Drive for Homeless where the members takes turn to volunteer cooking of approx. 70 – 100 packs of ready to eat at their residence.

The members worked hard to fund raise and also with the support of other Rotary Clubs of Brisbane managed to raise funds to supply Brand New wheel chairs to the needy & underprivileged Fijians, says Mr. Prasad.

This was actioned through a special committee, “Wheel Chair Project Team” who were responsible from fund raising, sourcing, transportation, Fiji liaison and overall implementation of this project. Mr. Prasad thanks the whole Team for delivering a successful International Project headed by Past President, Mr. Raj Padarath.

Mr. Prasad also acknowledges that this would not have been possible without the Partnership of the Suva Rotary Club. The Strategic Partnership with the Suva Rotary Club enabled us to provide this to the needy and underprivileged Fijians as RCBI did not have direct access to people. We cannot thank enough the Suva Rotary Club, its members and personal acknowledgement of the assistance provided by its President, Mr. Joe Taoi.

HEALTH Expo was organized at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Brisbane on Sunday 19th August 2018 The event was traditionally inaugurated

by Hon Shannon Fentiman, Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development by lighting lamps along with Dr Sunil Sharma, Dr Vidya Gupta and Dr Neeraj Khanna.

The Health Expo begins with the speech of Hon Minister where she applauded the BAPS efforts for providing common platform to the doctors of different specialities to serve local community.

Hon Ministers’ speech was followed by the

informative presentation by the Queensland Diabetes speaker.

The presenters provide helpful insights in maintaining a healthy lifestyle through a variety of visual presentations and interactive sessions.

Eight experienced and prominent Doctors from various medical specialised fields like Cardiologist, Urologist, Orthopaedic, Gynaecologist, Dentist, and Physiotherapist contributed by providing very useful and important tips towards increasing general awareness of maintaining healthy lifestyle to the attendants in the one-to-one sessions.

Formation of Hindu Society of Queensland In. & Establishment of Gayatri Mandir

By Prem Chand – Vice President MR TURBERT Bhagwan Ram Dutta and his late mother Gayatri Dutta, took bold steps to acquire the property at 178 Lyndhurst Road, Boondall for the purpose of a Mandir. They consulted people prior to the purchase. They had the community’s interest at heart, and were aware of the desire of the vast majority of the Hindu population who were keen to see a Mandir in Brisbane.

So, on Sunday 13 October 1991 and Sunday 3 November 1991 were the historic days for a vast majority of the Indian Community in Brisbane.

It was historic because it was on these two days that a group of interested persons assembled and made the following decisions: to form and register (as a Body Corporate) the Hindu Society of Queensland; to endorse the action which lead to the purchase of the property situated at 178 Lyndhurst Road,

Boondall for the prime purpose of a Mandir and such other uses (community hall, facility for language teachings and as reference library as appropriate religious literature) which conform to the objectives of the Society; and Appointed interim officials of the Society.

The Society had chosen to adopt the standard constitution as prepared by the Department of Justice and Correctional Services ie. “The Model Rules” A group of decided members and volunteers had worked tirelessly for about 3 months during the weekends and at nights to carry out the necessary alterations, repairs and paint the interior and exterior of the building before its official opening on 26 January 1992.

The Hindu Society of Queensland was incorporated on 22 January 1992 as Hindu Society of Queensland Incorporated. The original purchase price of the Gayatri Mandir

The Gayatri Mandir was the first Mandir in Brisbane and is own by the Hindu Community of Queensland and not by any individuals.

The Mandir known as Gayatri Mandir was officially blessed and declared open at a function attended by more than 600 people on Sunday 26 January 1992.

HEY GIRLS, looking to get great colour for your hair using natural ingredients. Hope below article will help you.

1. COFFEE

Natural Hair Colour Coffee works great if you’re looking to go darker, cover grey hairs, or add dimension to dark tresses.

Simply brew a strong coffee (espresso works well), let it cool, and then mix one cup with a couple cups of leave-in conditioner and 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds.

Apply on clean hair and

allow sitting for about an hour. If you use apple cider vinegar to rinse, it will help the colour last longer.

You may need to repeat the process a couple times to see noticeable results.

2. TEA

Natural Hair Colour Do keep in mind that tea works best with your natural colour. You won’t be able to turn blonde hair brunette. But black tea can darken blonde hair and chamomile can lighten it— especially if you sit in the sun while you have it in.

The longer you leave the tea on the hair, the more noticeable the colour will be. You can also try repeated applications.

The key is to make the

tea highly concentrated.

Use 3-5 teabags (or about the same amount in looseleaf tea) for two cups of water. You can apply the cooled tea to hair alone, or mix with conditioner (as noted in the coffee recipe).

If you’re seeking to cover greys, mix with some fresh or dried sage, which helps open up the hair follicles.

Leave on hair for at least an hour—more if you want more colours. Some even put on a cap and wear the tea overnight, then rinse the following morning. Check your colour to determine what intensity you need.

3. BEET AND CARROT JUICE

These two juices can add natural red tints to your

current colour. Depending on what Natural Hair Colour Shade you want, you can use each alone, or mix them together. For a more reddish tinge, use more beet juice (strawberry blonde, deeper red, or auburn). Carrot will produce a quieter reddish orange.

This one is easy—simply apply about a cup of the juice to your hair. You can also mix in some coconut oil to condition hair at the same time. Work it through, wrap hair, and leave on for at least an hour.

(These juices stain—wear something to protect your skin and clothes.) Rinse the juice out, and seal with an apple cider vinegar spray.

If the colour isn’t dark enough, repeat the next day.

4. HENNA

One of the most popular natural hair colouring ingredients, henna is a powdered form of the leaves that come from the henna plant. These leaves have a natural and effective colouring pigment that has been used for thousands of years to dye hair, nails, and skin.

Natural henna, on its own, creates a red-orange colour, so if you see products offering other colours produced with henna, realize the manufacturers have mixed the henna with other ingredients to achieve those colours. Redheads and brunettes (looking for a bit of auburn) are the best candidates for henna hair colour. Be careful with

this one—the results can be more orange than you’d like, so you may want to mix a little chamomile in with the paste to tame the colour.

To make your own henna hair dye, mix about one cup of henna powder with 2 cups lemon juice. You can also add in a tablespoon of vinegar to help release the colour. Allow to sit about 4-6 hours until it thickens.

Apply to hair and comb through. (This is messy so be prepared!) Wrap your hair in plastic wrap and allow to sit 2-3 hours before rinsing.

The last three months to the beginning of August 2018 recorded 38 sales for a total of $155.6 million, with $26.4 million for commercial, $10.8 million for commercial strata, $96.6 million for retail, $5.8 million for retail strata and $16.1 million for other.

ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE, the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full term in power, died on Thursday at the AIIMS Delhi where he had been undergoing treatment for a kidney ailment since June.

Leaders from all political spectrums on Thursday condoled the death of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and paid their tributes to the veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader.

Vajpayee, the first non-Congress leader to serve a full term in power, died on Thursday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences where he had been undergoing treatment for a kidney ailment since June. He was 93.

No Official Events For A Year, Says Kerala; Funds To Go For Flood Relief

experienced in a century, the state government has decided to not host any official events for a year.

Instead, the money used

in hosting such events will be diverted for flood relief and rehabilitation. Among the significant functions which stand to be cancelled this year, is the acclaimed International Film Festival of Kerala, according to news agency ANI. Other youth festivals, including state school youth festivals will be cancelled as well.

A government order issued today said no government department would host any festival for a year, according to news agency IANS. Kerala's culture minister AK Balan, however, said there "needs to be more

clarity in the order," adding that there was no decision taken by the Committee of Ministers looking into the rebuilding of the state, according to IANS. Filmmaker Kamal, who is the director of the academy organising the International Film Festival of Kerala said the order had come as a surprise.

"We can hold this festival without any celebrations and utilize our own funds," he said.

The funds from the cancelled events will be diverted to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief

Fund or the CMDRF. According to an IANS report, the fund received around Rs. 1,036 crore as of Monday.

Around Rs. 30,000 crore would be needed to rebuild Kerala, state finance minister Thomas Isaac said on Monday.

The state government has started a massive fund collection drive to rebuild a 'new Kerala'.

The government estimates Rs. 6,000 crore in cash to come in through public contributions.

Ministers from Kerala will be travelling to around 14

countries to raise money through contributions, according to IANS. The floods in Kerala have claimed around 400 lives, with lakhs who have been displaced.

The state government has announced a slew of measures for rehabilitation efforts, including interim relief of Rs. 10,000 for families affected by the floods.

The centre has also announced banking and financial relief measures, including providing a concessional loan for rebuilding houses.

NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday felicitated the medal winners of the 18th Asian Games with cash awards after the country registered its best-ever medal haul in the history of the continental mega sporting event.

While individual gold medal winners were given away Rs 30 lakh, the silver and bronze winners took home Rs 20 and Rs 10 lakh each.

India registered its best ever medal haul in the history of the Asian Games, fetching 69 medals which included 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh and sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore were present on the occasion, along with other Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Mahesh Sharma, sports srcretary Rahul Bhatnagar, IOA president Narinder Batra and SAI DG Neelam Kapur.

Rajnath congratulated all the medal winners and said it's not far when India will soon emerge as a sporting superpower in the world.

"I'm thrilled with our athletes' performance. I'm confident India will soon not only become economic superpower but also a sporting power,"

The Queensland Multicultural Awards recognise the valuable contributions of Queenslanders who support and promote a united, harmonious and inclusive Queensland community.

The 2018 theme was, ‘Building a prosperous, fair and harmonious Queensland’.

In 2018, we received a recordbreaking 133 award submissions and the calibre of nominees was inspiring.

The 2018 awards winners were announced at the Queensland Multicultural Awards gala lunch, held on Sunday 19 August at the Hilton Hotel, Brisbane.

Ministers Multicultural Award - Winner: Townsville City Council—Construction, Maintenance and Operations Townsville City Council’s Construction, Maintenance and Operations team supports and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity within the community by supporting State Government Employment programs targeting the full participation of Queenslanders from culturally diverse backgrounds, in particular Work Skills Trainees, funded under the Skilling Queenslanders

Outstanding Young Achiever – Winner: Nkosana Mafico Nkosana Mafico is a 23-yearold African Australian changemaker and scholar passionate about advancing humanity through business. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, he moved to Australia with his family when he was 10 years old and grew up in Brisbane.

He is the Founder of the Council for Young Africans Living Abroad (CYALA), a leading professional development organisation for young Africans who are aged 18 to 28. He began CYALA to challenge misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding Africa and to really develop African youth in Australia into future leaders Outstanding Individual Achiever - Winner: Faiza El-Higzi Sudanese-born Faiza ElHigzi is an active campaigner for human rights and cultural diversity within the Queensland community. She is described as a ‘bridge builder’ who strengthens community ties by creating spaces for conversations and interactions.

Her work on community and government boards are important opportunities to bring attention

to community issues and enable discussions that lead to positive outcomes for people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Community - Winner: SBS Radio Mandarin and Embodi Media SBS Radio Mandarin and emerging Brisbane company Embodi Media, co-founded by journalist Amy Chien-Yu Wang, have recently co-produced a cutting-edge journalism video project in 360-degree view about Brisbane’s annual Festival of Tibet held at the Powerhouse.

Government (local and state) Winner: Queensland Performing Arts Centre During the past 12 months, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) has delivered a series of inclusive new arts-based programs created in collaboration with people and communities of diverse backgrounds. Including: • We All Dance—Enabling people from the Syrian and BhutaneseQueensland communities to explore dance and performance.

• Songs of Hope and Healing— Supporting numerous young people from refugee backgrounds

to be part of a new 70-voice youth choir that rehearsed across two months at QPAC, hosted

by African community leader, Sharon Orapeleng.

• Brisasia Festival—A partnership that brought ideas, culture, and performances by local AsianAustralians to the mainstage.

Education, training and skills - Winner: Yeronga State High School Yeronga State High School has been very proactive in advocating for and developing culturally inclusive practices for more than 30 years. Yeronga State High School is one of the most culturally diverse schools in Queensland, with more than 70 cultural groups represented by 64 countries, with 65% of students born oversees and approximately 40% of students being refugees, special humanitarian entrants or seeking asylum. The school has implemented an International Student Program, English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) Program and the entire school community have outstanding outcomes in fostering intercultural alliances and

promoting the benefits of cultural diversity.

Multicultural Queensland Ambassador – Winner: Football Queensland Football Queensland through delivery of the Welcome to the Game program, have progressively built a productive and proactive community collaboration that uses the power of sport in promoting the benefits of cultural diversity in Brisbane and wider areas. Football Queensland has eliminated a number of barriers that limit participation, particularly of recently arrived refugees, people seeking asylum or migrants who do not often consider sport or recreation a priority in the first years of settlement. They have done this by adapting competition fees and payment structures to suit the needs of the participants, organising kick-off times to accommodate teams during the month of Ramadan, and providing additional external support from competition managers, coaches and administrators to assist these groups learn and develop the skills they need to operate in a traditional and formal competition.

GOPIO Queensland 2018 Lifetime achievement winner EVERY YEAR, GOPIO Qld recognizes one of our community elders, these are people who may be behind the scenes now , but have done so much for our community in the past, They are the pioneers who have set the foundation stone for us to build upon.

And this year GOPIO Queensland had another such wonder full person, who has worked tirelessly for Indian Community in Queensland, now what we must realize that these people had bigger challenges , but that did not stop them, they moved on did what they had to do and overcame the obstacles .

This year the awardee was none other than Manab Kar who came to Australia in 1970 in Sydney and then came to Brisbane in 1971 with his family.

He worked as an engineer in different private organisations in Brisbane, Sydney and Cairns. While working in different organisations he was also associated with many community activities

like Bengali Club, Hindu Mandir Inc., India Australia Society etc. And is still the “Patron” of Bengali Society of Queensland, Brisbane.

Some of his community involvement includes; Indian Durgapuja and Laksmipuja, he started Indian Durgapuja and Laksmipuja in 1992 at 22 Tucker Street, Chapel Hill in our residence and this Pujas continued for 3 years and then Bengali Club was formed and started Puja by the club.

Hindu Mandir, Hindu Mandir was incorporated in 1991 and he was the founder member and then Vice President and President later on. He was also the Chairperson for the publication in 1997.

This Hundu Mandir was established at Burbank and now known as “Lakshmi Narayan Mandir.”

Akshay Kumar's 'Gold' becomes the frst Bollywood movie to Rrelease in Saudi Arabia

MEGASTAR Akshay Kumar starrer ‘GOLD’ took the Box Office by storm as soon as it hit theatres. The film minted as high as Rs 25.25 crore on its opening day and became the third highest grosser of 2018.

The film is now a part of the coveted 100 Crore club and Akshay Kumar has been lauded for his performance in the film.

Fijian Wallabies fans to come together for Argentina test on the Gold Coast!

FIJIAN-Australian Wallabies fans will be out in force to support the Qantas Wallabies in their 2018 Rugby Championship Test match against the Argentina Pumas on Saturday September 15, 2018 at CBUS Stadium, Gold Coast.

The Fijian-Australian community is well represented in the Qantas Wallabies squad including wingers Marika Koroibete and Sefe Naivalu.

Marika Koroibete has had a unique journey to the green and gold Qantas Wallabies jersey. Born in the tiny Fijian village of Naraiyawa, Koroibete was spotted by rugby league scouts and became an NRL sensation for Wests Tigers and Melbourne Storm before switching to Rugby Union with the Melbourne Rebels.

Koroibete made his debut for the Qantas Wallabies in 2017 and said: “It’s a dream come true and all the

hardship I’ve been through, its all paid off now. I’m so proud and my family is so proud that I’m a Wallaby.”

Gold Coast Fijian Community leader Ata Satala said he is thrilled to see the diversity of the multicultural Qantas Wallabies: “The Fijian community have produced some great Wallabies including Ilie Tabua and Lote Tuquiri and we are very proud of our current crop. We’ll be out at CBUS Stadium cheering for the Wallabies.”

The Qantas Wallabies squad also features players born in New Zealand, Tonga, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
