As you enjoy more outdoors, be careful of the hay fevers with the pollen in the air. August had been a chock a block Month with so many activities to keep Brisbanites busy.

Well first let me talk about India Day Fair, a Queensland Iconic event, Madam President Usha Chandra and her committee need to be congratulated for an amazing job done. The team has once again delivered an exceptional India Day Fair. Brisbane Indian Times and Australian Indian Radio have been proud to have been associated and supporting this event.

We have been supporting many local community events for many years, by supporting community events we mean we have actually provided financial or in kind support. For supporting an event is not only turning up at the event and posting a few photos on social media. When we support an event there is so much that goes in the background, like the weekly email blast to over six thousand people, the social media posts both of Brisbane Indian Times and Australian Indian Radio.

Radio interviews, scheduled updates of the event and much much more.

We pride ourselves in keeping our end of the bargain when it comes to media partnership; we often get what I could say as obscene requests, which obviously we have to refuse, as we cannot stoop down to that level. Community based functions and commercial ventures are two different ball games and should be treated in that manner.

Many community organisations are now operating on very high standards and they employ best practices, I must congratulate many of the organisations who observe correct protocols with their functions, it is a reflection on the organisation itself.

Some of my speaking engagements this period included, an hour half of presentation at Unity Club of John Paul College, the presentation on India - its culture and Diaspora, something that I am passionate about, so it came naturally. My second big presentation was at Moreton Bay Boys College, now this

was challenging, addressing a full assembly of young boys on a sensitive topic of domestic violence. The talk came about as the College is supporting White Ribbon through one of their functions.

Australian Indian Radio website now has a section where you can request to hear interview or report that you may have missed, we will post requested shows, reports and interviews on the website for some time, it will depend on demand, shows that receive majority of requests will be featured in the on demand section. This is just one of the enhancements; we have received very good feed on the sound quality, which was increased a few months back, we were worried about buffing on some devices, but tests have come with favourable results, so we will keep streaming at 96k mp3. In your car you have many options of listening, the recommended method is via Tunein app, the sound quality is amazing, so you can either Bluetooth your audio to the car audio system, or you can connect via the aux input, this will chew up less battery.

I personally have my phone connected to the car charger and listen to Australian Indian Radio via the aux, leaving the Bluetooth for calls or for another phone. You can listen to Australian Indian Radio by our dial to listen service; you will not be using your data this way. So there you are, a few alternative ways of listening to Australian India Radio in the car. At home everyone has wifi, and you can listen to Australian Indian Radio on any Internet enabled device. In Coffee shops and many parks, there is free wifi available as well, I use tunein pro, and my data usage for Australian India Radio is about 25% compared to Facebook, so that is just a quick comparison of how much data you will use, just try it the quality will blow you away, I have demonstrated that to many taxi drivers and friends and they have all noted the big difference not only in the sound quality but the quality of the programs as well, you judge it for yourself.

From page 1 GOPIO Queensland’s India Day Fair keeps growing every year, and this year the festival had the largest participation numbers. India Day Fair 2016 was held on 20th August at the amphitheatre, Roma Street Parkland. The venue which is just right for this event, challenging as it may be, it offers the best ambience and feel for this iconic event. The committee is aware that they may outgrow this venue, but in the meantime this is it.

The festival has become ever popular and now attracts a large multicultural audience.

This year the chief guest was, The High Commissioner for India, His Excellency Navdeep Suri Ji, who was very impressed with the organisation of India Day Fair.

The day began with Bhajans by ISKCON; they really set the scene for the day with the blissful bhajans. Following the bhajans many kids’ performances were staged in the kid’s special segment. The master of ceremonies for this segment was Raina Khushal.

A floral tribute to Gandhi ji was presented

by GOPIO Queensland president, Mrs Usha Chandra and Councillor Vicki Howard, Councillor for the central Ward and also a financial supporter of India Day Fair.

The VIP reception was held in an especially themed area behind the main stage area.

Dream Style Decorators, did a wonderful job of the decorations. Over one hundred VIPS attended the reception.

The ever popular India Day parade began right on time, from the Mahatma Gandhi Statue precinct, the VIPS joined in the parade as it approached the stage area. The parade was led by the Cheddah Melam drummers, a

group of Malayalee enthusiast who later did a separate performance on stage of their synchronised drumming.

The invited dignitaries along with official party took seats on the main stage. Aunty Betty McGrady of Queensland Multicultural Council did the formal welcome to country, after this the Australian and Indian flags were raised. Master of ceremonies for the official segment was former speaker of Qld Parlia-

ment, John Mickel who asked GOPIO Queensland president Mrs Usha Chandra to deliver her welcome speech. Other speakers included, High Commissioner HE Navdeep Suri, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, Trevor Evens MP. Mark Ryan and others.

Following the formalities GOPIO Queensland lifetime achievement was awarded to Shakariya Chamalla, Jim Varghese in absence of GOPIO Queensland Patron, Dr Maha Sinnathamby spoke in this segment.

Shakariya Chamalla being away in India delivered a recorded acceptance message; the award was collected on his behalf by his grandson.

A few light showers failed to dampen the spirits of the festival goers, the third segment was full on entertaining with many Bollywood dances by leading groups of Brisbane such as Dance Masala, Bollywood Dhamaka, Siamak Darbar, etc. The Classical and folk dances were presented by Dr Helena Joshi, Nritya Bharati School of Kathak, Bengali Society of Queensland, Orioz and others. Live performances were by Brisbane Babas Band, Chedda Melam and ISKCON groups. This section was compered by dynamic Pele Ramdhani.

The fourth segment was the show stopper Navraj Hans show, Navraj was backed musically by Brisbane Babas Band. Navraj put on a very impressive show; he was very engaging and connected well with the very responsive audience. He was very pleased to be performing in front of such a large audience; such an audience is not available to many artists who are commercially promoted due to limitations of the venues. India Day

Fair being a free event with ample dancing area in front of the stage attracts a large number of people. Show stopper Navraj Hans was brought to Brisbane by GOPIO Queensland in conjunction with Fly High Production. This was the second year of this successful partnership.

The grand finale as usual was the Springfield Land Corporation sponsored fireworks spectacular, once again, this was a crowd pleaser, and the fireworks company puts on a very impressive show. The vantage point remains a challenge as everyone has to go to the stall area to get a good view.

Kids Zone, sponsored by Intech Institute of Technology was once again very popular, kids loved it and we could not keep the parent’s way from it. Police, ambulance and security services were in attendance throughout the day. Roma Street Parklands administration ought to be thanked for all that they do for Indian Day Fair, challenging as it may be there is a great deal of onus on them to make sure the event runs smoothly and incident free.

The stalls committee did a wonderful job of managing the stalls which can very tricky, managing the expectations of the stall hirers and maintaining the strict conditions of the venue. All stall holders reported very favourable business throughout the course of the event.

Volunteers and dedicated committee members worked very hard to make it a success that it was. GOPIO Queensland committee is thankful to all the sponsors, stall holders, service providers, invited guests, performers volunteers and Roma Street Parkland staff.

Confluence Festival of India in Australia CONFLUENCE Festival of India in Australia was officially launched on Tuesday 26 July, at the Maritime Museum in Sydney. The festival is the most significant showcase of Indian arts and culture ever to be staged in Australia, taking place in seven cities across the country between August and November 2016.

The national media launch was a phenomenal success with over two hundred guests in attendance, including media and government representatives from both countries. The launch provided a teaser of what is to come when the first show kicks off on 15 August in Melbourne, which happens to coincide with the 70th Indian Independence Day celebrations. One of the festival’s key components, fostering bilateral ties, with joint performances and collaborations between Indian and Australian artists and thinkers was

addressed by Paul Myler, Assistant Secretary, India & Indian Ocean Branch, DFAT on the night. Kevin Sumption, Director and CEO Maritime Museum provided the host welcome. “I would like to thank the Indian Government and all the artists from India who have brought this showcase of Indian culture to Australia on such a grand scale. The Australian Government is proud to support the festival and looks forward to its success over the coming months, in cities across Australia.

In particular, the Government is pleased that the festival features joint performances and collaborations between Indian and Australian artists and thinkers. I hope the Festival of India will help to foster closer ties between our nations.� Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, Minister for the Arts.

Like the waters of two rivers, they meet, share and imbibe from each other. That's the focus of our festival, of the collaborations that it strives to promote.� said Navdeep Suri, the High Commissioner of India in Australia.

A special festival support message was provided by Australian High Commissioner to India, Ms Harinder Sidhu and Shri Narenda Kumar Sinha, Secretary Culture, Ministry of Culture from India through a video link on the night.

In Brisbane the official launch took place at Brisbane City Hall on 19th August 2016.

At that meeting Umesh Chandra invited His Excellency to attend GOPIO Queensland’s India Day Fair on the 20th of August; Umesh Chandra said it would be a good platform to get the message across to a large audience.

FICQ hosted a community event with His Excellency High Commissioner Navdeep Suri on the night of 19th where he dissucessed community involvement for upcoming Confluence.

On 20th August, His Excellency was the chief guest at GOPIO Queensland’s Indian Day Fair, where he talked about Confluence to the large audience .

This dinner is held every year to raise awareness and support the work at the Christian Medical College at Ludhiana (CMCL) in Punjab, India. This year the dinner raised funds for a new brachytherapy machine at Ludhiana. Over a hundred people attended the dinner this year.

The evening began with a welcome by Dr Jacob Cherian, President, FOL, and the traditional lighting of the lamp. The Chief Guests were Dr Jeyaraj Pandian, Professor and Head of Dept of Neurology, and Dr Pamela Jeyaraj, Professor of Radiotherapy at CMCL. Both Dr Jeyaraj and Dr Pamela had previous training in Brisbane at the RBH and Mater hospitals respectively, and several of their previous colleagues from

these hospitals were in attendance.

Dr Jeyaraj in his speech gave some idea of the history and mission of CMC Ludhiana, how the institution has evolved, and some of the current projects and challenges. Dr Pamela gave an overview of the cancer load in India, and the indications and need for Brachytherapy in Punjab and Ludhiana.

The evening’s entertainment was provided by the Bhangra group- “Shere-e-Punjab” who put up a spirited and robust Bhangra performance, and the “Spotlight Sisters” – a group of 4 sisters who performed 3-4 very well presented Bollywood dances.

A delicious three-course Indian meal was well appreciated by all.

The evening came to a close with the vote of thanks.

Cultural forum on Indian Culture at John Paul College JOHN Paul College, in Daisy Hill, in 2014 set up a cultural committee for parents called the Unity Club with the purpose of creating opportunities to interact, learn and appreciate people of all backgrounds and faiths, in the hopes of achieving an authentic, campuswide solidarity.

Their cultural Forums allow parents to connect with other parents (from all backgrounds and faiths) in a casual, social setting while also providing a venue to learn more about other cultures over morning tea. Although children are surrounded by a variety of ethnic backgrounds at school, as parents they may find social circles less diverse. By attempting to connect parents of all backgrounds with a common goal of all learning something new, they naturally create new friendships. They believe inherently this process breaks down pre-existing stereotypes that many may have prior to having a first-hand experience with someone from another culture thus their pas-

sion for pursuing this particular initiative oncampus.

Umesh Chandra was chosen as the key note speaker and presenter at this forum, his talk and well researched power point presentation was for an hour and half and covered a variety of interesting topics. The presentation was very well received by all and the audience had plenty of time for questions and answers.

Queensland Multicultural Council President Umesh Chandra, Janeth Deen and Adele Rice, met on a weekly basis to discuss and fine tune the program. The seminar attracted some high calibre speakers such as Dr Susan Creagh from University of Queensland, who presented a talk on New Vision for Multiculturalism, New concept for Education. Dr Brian Hoepper presented a talk on “The Challenge; disaffection, alienation and radicalization among young people, these two were the key note speakers, other presenters included Alisa Cleary, Adele Rice, Abdul Celil, Julie Peel, Helen Murphy, Adrianne Jones, Sebestain Flynn, Mozhdeh Khakbaz, Josh Arnold. Abdi Hersi and Daniel Zingifusboro.

From Queensland Multicultural Council, Aunty Betty McGrady did the traditional welcome to country, Rodica Kennedy formally welcomed everyone, Ms Janeth Deen spoke on how and why the expo was being held, and Umesh Chandra moved a vote of thanks.

The event was supported by Access Services and MDA, while the seminar was being conducted in the hall the outside area was being used for display, many educational institutions utilised the opportunity to display their facilities and courses.

Tea and refreshments were provided throughout the day and a multicultural lunch was served for all. The seminar was well attended and everyone commented to the high quality of the keynote speakers and presenters, the topics generated a lot of interest which was reflected in the question and answers, Overall a very successful seminar and expo, given the short lead up time.

His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj A rare soul who always lived for others and at the same time remained totally absorbed in God. A peaceful, humble, simple and spiritual personality Courtesy BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Brisbane THIS great guru, the fifth spiritual successor in Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s succession of Gunatit gurus, was born in a farmer’s family on 7 December 1921, in the village of Chansad, located near Vadodara. His childhood name was Shantilal. And true to his name, peace was the introduction to his personality. From his childhood, his inclination was to perform spiritual austerities in the Himalayas. However, during his adolescent years, he was attracted to the pure life of Brahmaswarup Shastriji Maharaj, Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s third spiritual successor.

After completing his initial studies at the age of 18, he renounced the world and was initiated by Shastriji Maharaj in 1940, and renamed Narayanswarupdas Swami. His striking humility, noble services, saintliness and selfless desire to help all, won him the love of everyone. In 1950, when he was only 28 years old, Shastriji Maharaj appointed him as the president of BAPS. From then on, he affectionately became known as ‘Pramukh Swami’.

Shastriji Maharaj passed away in 1951, declaring Yogiji Maharaj as his spiritual successor. Thereafter, Pramukh Swami served under the guidance and blessings of Yogiji

Maharaj. In 1971, he became the spiritual

successor of Brahmaswarup Yogiji Maharaj

and his life has continued to be an inspiration to countless people, guiding them all to lead a spiritual life. “In the joy of others lies our own…” This maxim by Pramukh Swami Maharaj is not only an inspiring call for all of humanity, but also reflects the spirit of his humanitarian services to humankind and society. Out of his compassion for humanity, he has tirelessly visited over 17,000 villages, towns and cities. In addition to the renowned Swaminarayan Akshardham complexes in New Delhi and Gandhinagar, he has gifted the world with over 1,100 mandirs. These mandirs and cultural complexes have become hallmarks in preserving culture and performing social services. Remaining aloof from caste or creed, his borderless love has touched the lives of many, whether young or old, literate or illiterate, and rich or poor. s the spiritual leader of a worldwide sociospiritual organization, BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, his selfless love and effort have directed the energies of youths to serve as volunteers. His selfless work has been applauded by revered spiritual luminaries, national leaders and other dignitaries.

Innumerable aspirants have experienced peace and the bliss of God in his presence.

Brisbane celebrates Janmashtami JANMASHTAMI, the birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm in the month of July or August.

According to the Hindu calendar this religious festival is celebrated on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadon.

Sri Krishna is considered as the one of the most powerful human incarnations of the Lord Vishnu. He was born around 5,200 years ago in Mathura. The sole objective of Sri Krishna’s birth was to free the Earth from the evilness of demons. He played an important role in Mahabharata and propagated the theory of bhakti and good karma which are narrated deeply in the Bhagwat Geeta.

Sri Krishna was born in a prison in the custody of Kansa. Vasudev, His father immediately thought of his friend Nand and decided to hand over his child to him to save Krishna from the clutch of Kansa. Krishna grew up in Gokul and finally killed his uncle, King Kansa.

The actual celebration of Janmashtami takes place during the midnight as Sri Krishna is believed to have been born on a dark, stormy and windy night to end the rule and violence of his uncle, Kansa. All over India, and thought out the world wherever Hindus reside this day is celebrated with devotional songs and dances, pujas, arti, blowing of the Conch and rocking the cradle of baby Sri Krishna.

The Janmashtami celebration of Mathura and Vrindavan, the places where Sri Krishna had spent his life, are very special. On this day temples and homes are wonderfully decorated and illuminated. Night long prayers are offered and religious mantras are sung in the temples.

At Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir, Krishna Janam was officially on the Thursday the 25th but festive activities including Garba etc were held on Friday 26th, Saturday being a holiday. Dharam Guru Pundit Tripathi Ji said that Janam must take place on the correct date, but festivities can be held at another time.

Celebrations were held at Gayatri Mandir Boondall (Main photo); traditionally this is the first function of the new committee, the officiating Pundit was Pundit Suresh Shandil.

DUNCAN Pegg MP, Member for Stretton hosted the annual multicultural morning tea and awards on Monday 22nd August at Salvation Army hall Kameruka Street, Calamvale.

The popular MC for the function was Lewis Lee OAM, a very befitting MC as he can just about name all the dignitaries with their respective titles without looking at the notes.

Telstra launches new plans with best value yet for international calling

22 AUGUST 2016: Telstra will make it easier and more affordable than ever for customers to keep in touch with loved ones when it includes unlimited standard international calls on selected mobile and home internet plans from 23 August.

The new plans will include calls to some of the most popular countries Australians call including India, China, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea.

Stuart Bird, Telstra Executive Director Fixed Products and Services, said with Telstra customers making more than 130 million international calls each year, the need to cater to customers calling friends and family overseas has never been greater.

“From speaking to customers, we know that many families are spread across multiple continents and it’s important to have an easy and affordable way to stay in touch,” Mr Bird said.

“The inclusion of calls to these destinations means customers have the freedom to make international calls as many times as they want during the month, worry free of charges.”

In addition to launching plans with included international calling, Telstra will also offer customers on selected mobile and broadband plans including 3 month subscriptions to video streaming services – Netflix, Stan and Presto.

“Customers taking up a Medium or Large home internet bundle will receive a Telstra TV as well as bonus three month subscriptions to Netflix, Stan and Presto, giving them access to more than 15,000 TV shows and movies to watch at home or on the go on their mobile devices,” Mr Bird said.

And, as the Australian streaming revolution moves to the small screen, customers taking

up $95 and above Go Mobile Plus plans on a 24 month term (min cost $2280) and $70 and above Go Mobile Plus BYO plans on a 12 month term (min cost $840) from Tuesday will also receive a 3 month subscription to Netflix, Stan and Presto. Data charges apply.

Telstra is also launching international language content starting with YuppTV, the largest content streaming service offering Desi entertainment with more than 250 TV channels and 5000 movies in 13 languages.

As part of the launch, new YuppTV subscribers that sign up on Telstra TV will receive an exclusive 30 day free trial offer until the end of October.

As the nation’s love affair with on-demand entertainment reaches new heights, Telstra is also launching new Wi-Fi technology to keep customers streaming smoothly. Residents to help commemorate streets’ ANZAC history

BRISBANE City Council announced a further 20 suburban streets with World War One significance to be recognised as part of a rolling program to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC. Infrastructure Chairman Cr Amanda Cooper announced the newest street signs would feature the historic Rising Sun military badge as part of the city’s popular Streets of Remembrance project and called on to residents to nominate other streets sharing a World War One history.

“Council’s heritage experts have been gathering information about streets from every corner of the city with special significance to events, places and people from the First World War,” Cr Cooper said.

“As part of the program, 20 new streets in suburbs such as Carina Heights, Hamilton, Bardon, Salisbury, Yeronga and Kedron are being recognised, with new signs to be installed in the weeks before Remembrance Day. “Now we are calling on residents and local history groups to get involved with the program and put forward their suggestions for names, so that we can recognise as many streets as possible ahead of Remembrance Day in November.

“These latest streets have names with special ANZAC significance, recognising hospitals, cemeteries and recipients of the Victoria Cross from 1915 and 1916,” she said.

“Rouen Road in Bardon shares its name with a French city that was host to a major logistics centre with eight military hospitals during the First World War. Ganesh Chaturthi brings people of all religion, caste and creed together. Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi is one of the most colourful and widely celebrated festivals in India. There are several reasons for this. Ganpati is first of all popular Gods. His blessings are important at most religious ceremonies as He is the one who can remove all obstacles to success. He is the giver of fortune and can help to avoid natural calamities.

A Large number of people perform Ganesha Chaturthi poojas at their home.

This year all Hindus over the world are celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi on September 5th (i.e. on Monday). Ganesh Chaturthi also was known as Vinayaka Chaturthi in southern India. A clay model of Lord Ganesha is made before the festival and the idols are easily available in markets in sizes from 3/4th of an inch to 25 feet tall and more.

In Brisbane Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated at all Hindu temples and by all Hindu Organisations, Brisbane Indian Times attended Ganesh Chaturthi at Gayatri Mandir Boondall, where the pooja was officiated by Pundit Praveen Shandil. Many devotes had reserved pooja spots to take part in the com-

bined pooja Vidhi. A large number of devotees had turned out for this very important pooja.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2016 Puja Muhurut to bring the Vigraha / Idol home was during the Shubh, Labh or Amrit Choghadiya.

Ganesh Pooja is preferred during Madhyanhana on Ganesh Chaturthi as it is believed that Lord Ganesh was born during Madhyahana Kaal. Madhyahna Kala is equivalent to midday according to Hindu division of the day which is between 14:09 and 15:42. The Muhurut time specified above is the best Muhurut to perform the Ganesh Puja and to perform any work. During midday, Ganesha devotees perform detailed ritualistic Ganesha Puja which is known as Shodashopachara Ganapati Puja.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great devotion all over India. People bring home murtis (Idols) of Lord Ganesha and celebrate the festival by worshiping the Lord in a special way for a day and a half, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days or 11 days depending on the family tradition and commitment of each individual.

Devotees worship Ganesha idol for 10 days and then on the last day of worship those idols are taken out in a colourful and musical procession to be immersed traditionally at a beach or nearby rivers and ponds.

GAYATRI Mandir Boondall in conjunction with Brisbane Bhatki Sanga organised a Sri Hari Katha Prawachan at their temple situated at 178 Lyndhurst Road Boondall from Sunday 4th Till Thursday 9th September.

The discourse was delivered by Sripad Uttama Krishna Das Brahmacari who came from Jagannath Puri, India. Uttama Krishna Prabhu joined Sri Kesavaji Gaudiya Matha in Mathura after taking shelter of Srila Bhatktivedanta Narayan Gosvami Matha.

Where he learned all the services including chanting of the Kirtanas, and reciting Srimad

Bhagwatam and Bhagwat Gita, in which he is a renowned scholar. Since 2009 he has been assisting with the running of a temple in Jagannath Puri, Jaya Sri Damodara Gaudiya Matha.

At the temple he spoke daily on Harikatha, and sings melodious and enchanting Kirtanas. He is also instrumental in the publishing of an Orrisan quarterly Magazine.

At Gayatri Mandir Boondall dinner was served every night to all devotes and the final night of the program on 9th September was held in Darra.

There were stalls for foods and information.

Jumping castle for the children, free fairy floss and face painting. Entry was free.

Radio 4EB is a community radio station and it is an umbrella body of over 55 communities. It is a great platform for multiculturalism and with the support of over 55 different

communities.

Indian Programming Group was able to put up this great event and it was a great success, well attended by people from different background. We extend our sincere thanks to the support from the Government from different levels, Federal, State and local for attending this great event as well the police department for their support. Next year we are looking forward to this great event in a much bigger way.

Swatantryam – a thematic presentation of India’s freedom movement

GURU Smt Padamalakshhmi Sriram and her disciples presented a well choreographed classical dance based presentation of India’s freedom movement on 28 August. This production was a result of their inherent desire to express India’s inspiring journey towards its independence through the beautiful medium of Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance form.

Nearly one hundred hours of prac-

tice went in over five months for this production. The dedication and passion of all the forty seven students from different age groups put together, created this wonderful show.

The initial struggles of the freedom fighters such as Jhansi Ki Rani and the various religions of India were also depicted in the act. The choreography coupled with the tastefully designed costumes added to the tal-

ents of the dancers in making this a wonderful experience for all.

Sriram had served in Indian Air Force for twelve and a half years and they both lived the life of a soldier. This production is the result of their inherent desire to express India’s inspiring journey towards its independence through the beautiful medium of Bharatanatyam.

New lease of life for Mowbray Park Bowls Facility THE Mowbray Park bowls facility is set to become home to Backbone Youth Arts after Brisbane City Council granted a four-year lease to the community organisation.

Lifestyle and Community Services Chairman, Cr Matthew Bourke said Multimedia Art Asia Pacific would also join Backbone and provide a range of opportunities for the local creative crowd.

“Backbone and Multimedia Art Asia Pacific are leading community arts organisations and have provided support for local, national, international and young emerging artists,” Cr Bourke said.

“As the primary tenant, Backbone will open up the facility to the public through performances, workshops, events and outreach activities.”

“The abandoned facility will receive a $75,000 makeover as part of the new

lease arrangement including a new café, bar and decking.

“The two bowling greens will also be reactivated with proposed activities including circus arts, barefoot bowls and outdoor markets.”

Council opened expressions of interest applications for the former bowls facility last year with a lease term of up to four years, which included the clubhouse and two former bowling greens.

“After a careful review of applications, Backbone was selected as the most suitable primary tenant,” Cr Bourke said.

“In partnership with Multimedia Art Asia Pacific, both organisations will provide important opportunities for East Brisbane’s youth to explore their creativity within their own community.

“Council currently provides more than 600 properties to not-for-profit community organisations through lease or licence agreements.

By Supriya Jeyakumar CULTURE may be considered as the ideas, customs, or social behaviour of a particular group of people in a society. There are various religions that follow a culture. Every religion has an individual custom, tradition and values but, Hinduism is a religion, a way of life, which has a distinctive custom, tradition and values. Hinduism is the oldest religion on Earth. The earliest known records of Hinduism appear to have been found by archaeologists that were carried by the 1st three civilisations on Earth. However, today's generations of children and teenagers are not interested to understand our culture very well.

As a Hindu we are following many traditions and customs such as going to the temple, celebrating festivals, and involving in community Bajan events. Bajan is where a group of people sing and share devotional song to worship the God collectively. There are many benefits and advantages of involving in Bajans. When we sing devotional songs as a group we begin to get rid of negative thoughts, worries and gain positive thinking and attitudes. To encourage this, the Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association organises a Bajan every month on the 3rd Friday evening. There are many children and adults join in singing devotional songs and worshiping the God. GCHCA is currently focusing to build a temple with cultural and education centre near the famous Harbour Town shopping centre. The GCHCA is planned to providing a platform to promote the education of learning a language and religious/ cultural activities, traditions and practices for the children and upcoming generations.

Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association was formed by the people from around Australia (mainly from Gold Coast) with a clear vision and noble objects. It has been supported by thousands of well wishes in the wider community. They are really working very hard to bring up the Hindu Precinct soon. Only thing

The annual general meeting of GCHCA was held on 21st August 2016 in Helensvale Community Centre in Gold Coast. Hindu Cultural Hub at Clayfield - Vinayagar Chaturthi Courtesy Shankar Jayapandian WE had our most beloved Ganesh Chaturthi on 5th September. For some unknown reason, of all festivals, Ganesh Chaturthi gets everyone attention and stays close to their heart. It is Our Lord Ganesh we are talking about, Our Vinayagar, Our Ganapathi, Our Pillaiyar. The one God who is always present at all prayers and in all worships, either as an appetiser or as a dessert and at times as the main meal.

Many celebrated our Vinayagar Chaturthi on 5th of September and a few, like me, have planned to celebrate it the whole month of September for the laddoo and Modagam/modak or commonly called as Kozhukattai (The sweet dumpling made from rice or wheat flour stuffed with grated coconut, jaggery, dried fruits, some condiments and lots of devotion).

Keeping aside the kind request made by the Indian Prime Minister Hon. Narendra Damodardas Modi to make ecofriendly Ganesh idols, the tradition way of making idols using clay rather than with plaster of paris. Let us look deeper at Our Lord Ganash’s form than what material it is made from. No doubt, I believe we all will agree on a more environment considerate God. Whether made of clay or any material for that matter, our Lord Ganesh’s form has a very valuable lesson. The form may vary, being the most loved God by all artist around the world. Lord Ganesh may be portrayed as standing, sitting, dancing, crawling as a child, or even seated on his father’s or mother's knee in their family photo of four. And when seated, Our Lord may choose to have his legs crossed or choose to tuck one leg under him in the position known as ‘royal ease’. Usually with four hands, but this too can vary anywhere between 2 – 16 hands. So what does our common, simple Ganesh idol symbolises? If there is a common, simple Ganesh.

Our Lord Ganesh reveals a lot, just from his form. That is, apart from the very obvious representation of an elephant face with a big head symbolising think big, big ears meaning listen more, small mouth signifying talk less. Small and sharp eyes to denote focus and concentration and an elephant’s trunk, as we all know, can pick up objects from a huge tree to a tiny needle, pointing any ability is only useful when it serves both extremes. With just one tusk suggesting retain good and throw away the bad, also proposing a path to the non-duality existence. Showing a Nobel man is beyond duality and at peace with the one he has. identity of Lord Ganesh is his BIG belly, which many believe symbolises the ability to digest all good and bad in life. Our most beloved God, cannot just simply imply what we already know, there had to be something more to his form. What could it be?

What is it?

Lord Ganesh four hands – is it showing four directions? With one holding a lotus, a symbol of enlightenment?

With the other hand holding hatchet, the accumulated good and bad deeds that gets cut when enlightenment comes? The third hand holding Laddoos/Modagams as a reward for a wise life? And the final fourth hand blessing as any sensible person should wish the best for everyone? We all know this, this can’t be it, there had to be more significance to that form. For our Lord Ganesh, the boundless divine entity to choose this particular form.

And what does that rat symbolises? Is it a metaphor? As we know, a rat is known for its greedy and notorious nature. It will keep nibbling at whatever it comes across, eating and chewing anything and everything it can. Scientifically rats are known to have itchy teeth and though not all, most are found to have a medical condition that makes their teeth

grow continuously. So the rats keeps chewing to get rid of the itchy feeling. Is the rat a symbol to our 5 senses which are never satisfied, constantly craving new tastes and new desire? When let uncontrolled like a rat, our senses too will run and eat forever. Our Lord Ganesh, rides on it showing a righteous man will know how to control his five senses and use them to his will, not mend to it and be a victim of his senses.

Or maybe altogether could the rat mean something totally opposite, perhaps a humble devotion, like a true nature of a selfless devotee. The rat being so tiny yet carries such a big elephant headed God. The same way, a simple yet faithful prayer brings the ultimate, limitless, infinite and immeasurable divine presence to our house, into our small prayer room.

Can we choose to believe the second metaphor as a lesson to be taken and remembered? That gives us hope, being so tiny in the vast cosmos need not necessarily stop us but on the contrary becomes the only eligibility for devotion on this Chathurthi month. Not many of us would have seen a picture of Our Lord Ganesh ridding on his rat but all of us would have seen a picture where the rat sits in front of Our Ganesh in absolute Awe and wonderment. Is that the lesson to be learnt? To be totally baffled at the creator and realising there is nothing we can offer, as God does not need either man’s gift or his own creation. Just play our part, do what we do best and leave the rest to the best hands.

THE Hindu Cultural Hub at Clayfield is a centre to congregate and promote spiritual, cultural and educational needs of local community and wider Hindu society in Brisbane. Devotees and friends assemble at the Bar-Jai Community Hall (178, Alexandra Road, Clayfield) last Friday of each month between 6.30pm to 9pm.

The Moon Cake or Mid-Autumn Festival Colourful, sweet and fun for all - 15 September 2016

Celine Goh, Features Writer AS a kid, I grew up in Singapore relishing the buzz that surrounds the Mid-Autumn Festival or the Moon Cake Festival.

In Brisbane, a visit to the two Chinatowns located in Fortitude Valley and Sunnybank, will reveal boxes upon decorated boxes of oh, so sweet moon cakes! According to Chinese legend, these moon cakes are pivotal in overthrowing the Mongol Yuan Empire (1271-1368) after the Han Chinese led the people in a rebellion by surreptitiously passing messages hidden in these innocent looking delicacies.

Today, the moon cakes reflect the joy of freedom, as displayed in their different tastes and creative designs.

I am always thoroughly fascinated every time I visit Singapore during this auspicious festival. I would weave my way through the hundreds of stalls in Singapore tasting and feasting my eyes on a sea of rounded moon cakes, from the traditional varieties with golden lotus seed paste embedded with quality salted double egg yolks, to white snow skin types, filled with chocolate or exotic champagne truffle to tempt young,

suave taste-buds!

Savour a morsel and delicately sip on aromatic fragrant Chinese tea and you’ll be wafted up to seventh heaven in the company of the mesmerising moon maidens.

Truly it is a festival for the very young and the elderly as the lanterns are lit at night and neighbourhoods come alive with generations of families exchanging fun and laughter in admiring the artistically created lanterns. A SENIOR Buddhist lama is coming to Brisbane to teach local people how to stop taking their emotions so seriously.

His Eminence the 7th Dzogchen Rinpoche says emotions are actually neither good nor bad, it is the way we react to them that causes us problems.

Dzogchen Rinpoche will be in Brisbane on 30th September at BrisWest Centre in Paddington to give a public talk entitled ‘Emotions – Don’t Take Them Too Seriously’.

His Eminence, who is one of the highest lamas alive today in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, says: “We tend to believe our emotions. We either suppress our anger, jealousy and desire because they are regarded as negative or express them skilfully for our gain.

“The Dzogchen teachings however, see emotions as neither good nor bad in themselves rather saying that it’s taking our emotions seriously, following and reacting to them, that causes us problems.”

In this public talk, Dzogchen Rinpoche will introduce the Dzogchen view on emotions helping us to see them as they really are transient projections of the mind and giving us very practical methods to end our daily struggle.

Sanskrit – the refined language SANSKRIT, one of the oldest languages of the world, is the classical language of Hindu civilization that originated in Ancient India. Hindu scholars considered Sanskrit a “Deva Bhasha” or the language of divine personalities. The Hindu scriptures as well as important works in other disciplines were written in Sanskrit. Sanskrit was and remains the primary language used during the performance of sacred ceremonies for Hindus all over India and abroad. All the Mantras, which are used in traditional Hindu religious rituals, are in the Sanskrit language.

The literal meaning of Sanskrit is cultured or refined. It was the language of educated or learned persons, commonly known as Pandits. The language used by commoners or ordinary people in ancient India was known as Prakrita or natural.

The Sanskrit language has a well-defined structure and grammar. The well-known grammarian Panini wrote the grammar of the Sanskrit language over three thousand years ago. The Panini grammar is known as Ashtadhyayi or eight-chapter book and still remains valid. It is an important component of the Sanskrit school curriculum. It defines and describes the mechanism of formation of words, sentences and compositions from their root syllables and also articulates means for their correct structure.

Sanskrit is considered as the mother of modern Indian languages. Even now new words required to translate from a foreign language to a modern Indian language are derived from Sanskrit roots.

Sir William Jones, an Englishman appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court at Kolkata by the British East India Company, a precursor of British Raj in India, introduced Sanskrit to Europeans in the eighteenth century. Sir Jones learnt Sanskrit from a local Pandit and admired the beauty of the lan-

guage. He noted: “The Sanskrit language, whatever be its antiquity, is of a wonderful structure; more perfect than the Greek, more copious than the Latin and more exquisitely refined than either.”

His translation of Sanskrit drama Abhigyan Shakuntalam by Kalidasa into English showed the splendor of the Sanskrit language to European scholars. Thence a number of European scholars translated Sanskrit books into European languages and that trend continues today.

Major Hindu religious and philosophical works in Sanskrit are the Vedas, Upanishadas, Puranas, Ramayana and Mahabharata. Most of these compositions are in Shloka or poem format, which helps readers to memorize the texts.

Sanskrit is also the language of other Indian origin religions including Buddhism and Jainism. For example the important text Buddhcharita by Ashvaghosha is in Sanskrit, as is the Diamond Sutra of Mahayana Buddhism.

Some people mistakenly believe that Sanskrit is only used for religious purposes. The religious texts are only a fraction of the vast writings in this language.

Science, mathematics, logic, history, astronomy, fiction and nonfiction publications abound in Sanskrit. Notable works in other disciplines includes Charak Samhita on medicine, Kautilya Arthshastra on economics and politics, Manusmriti and Dharmasutras on social law, works on mathematics by Aryabhatt and on astronomy by Varahamihira and Bhaskara.

Panchtantra and Hitopadesha, fairy tales and stories in Sanskrit have received international acclaim and are translated into major foreign languages.

Sanskrit is taught in Indian schools, colleges and universities.

It is taught in Sanskrit educational institutions using the ancient Gurukul system. This system has its own criteria of qualification ranking, which encompass all aspects of a com-

plete education, based on ancient Hindu tradition. A number of Sanskrit universities in India teach Sanskrit subjects uniting both the modern education system with the Gurukul system of education. Many overseas universities also include Sanskrit within various disciplines in their curriculum.

Sanskrit literature abounds in expression of complex thoughts, description of natural beauty and human character.

Kadambari and Harshcharitam by Banabhatt, Meghdutam, Raghuvansham and Abhigyan Shakuntalam by Kalidasa are some texts that demonstrate the loveliness of the dialogue and expression in Sanskrit classics. These books are available in English translation and certainly their reading will stimulate further interest in reading Sanskrit literature.

Despite the destruction of an extensive body of Sanskrit literary works of ancient India by foreign invaders, a large number of books have survived.

A significant volume of literary works in Sanskrit is still not available in an easy to read modern language translation.

Both government and private agencies continue to work towards making these Sanskrit works available to a wider audience.

Sanskrit universities and other Sanskrit institutions are performing a highly commendable job of translating these books into modern languages, to make them available to contemporary readers. It is worth noting for example the translation of Puranas from Sanskrit to English being sponsored by the United Nation Education and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and Government of India. Similar mechanism is required for scholarly translation of other Sanskrit works.

Tasbih and the Mind

By Dr. Tripty Hirani GROWING up in a tradition where Tasbih (a form of chanting using rosary beads) was used almost daily and especially so during difficult situations, I never questioned how it always induced a feeling of calmness and inner strength. I remember using it by choice when I was 18 when my mother went for brain surgery, and I was experiencing anxiety and worry; and I have used it once again, 27 years later, to support myself in my grief towards my mother’s passing.

When our mind is like the clear blue sky, with no thought clouds, we experience clarity and calmness. The same calmness is experienced in the gap between two thoughts. If you have experienced mindfulness of meditation, you will know that its true purpose is to increase

this gap between our thoughts. The gap is where the true nature of mind resides!

In reality, this gap closes very quickly depending on our experiences. Look back at a time in your life when you were in the grip of overwhelming emotions such as aggression, anxiety, fear or grief. These emotions were generated in response to what the mind was thinking and believing. Behind every emotion, there is an underlying thought (conscious or subconscious). Panic results when the thought-feeling cycle continues uninhibited.

The human brain is designed to protect the human species. How it perceives danger is determined by the life experience of the person and the set of beliefs already embedded in the subconscious mind. The Cortex (thinking brain) is not able to differentiate between real danger and perceived danger. Thought processes from the Cortex are perceived by the Limbic brain (seat of emotions) that produce biochemicals that flood the body and result in various sensations and feelings. The

Throughout our civilisation ropes have been used to lift, build and hold things together.

Ropes are essential part of life even today in the modern world of high-tech devices to hold things together.

But the Scarlet Rope is not an ordinary rope.

This Scarlet Rope tied to a window by Rahab who lived in Jericho saved the lives of entire family. This story of Rahab teaches us an extraordinary principle. It does not really matter how bad your family past may be, it does not have to dictate your future and destiny. Society of Jericho reduced Rahab to prostitution to support her family. But her faith in a God was very strong; she believed in a God who forgives all our sins and is able to lift us from pit with His rope of grace.

Amygdala is a structure in the brain’s Limbic system that helps determine whether or not a threat is approaching, and if so, sends out a danger signal, initiating the fight-or-flight response.

The true nature of our emotions, nothing more than neuro-peptides and their receptors, is to rise and fall like the waves in an ocean.

However, people often react to these emotions, by suppressing them, judging them or wanting to fix them and they do this by generating more thoughts in response to that emotion. Now, the new thoughts generated produce another wave of emotion and in this way the cycle of ‘thought-feeling-thoughtfeeling-’ is perpetuated!

So how does it help to use Tasbih, or prayer, or chanting a mantra for overwhelming emotions? What is really happening is that for a brief moment the thinking mind is replaced with a repetitious statement as in chanting or Tasbih. The destructive thought has now been

Spiritual significance of Hajj / reality of pilgrimage for the seekers of Allah

By Ml. Nawaaz Ashrafi HAJJ is the last pillar of the Shariah, the Sacred Law of Divine Guidance, Commandments and Limits. In it is also Ma’rifah or Gnosis of Allah. For those who do not understand the reality of the rites and symbols of Hajj or pilgrimage, for them Hajj amounts to only certain rituals. Hajj is a symbolic journey to God, in which a seeker of God leaves behind people whom he loves taking pains in this journey. In appointed time those who visit the Kaaba and be present at the valley of Arafat and observer other observances this is sufficient to conform to the outward rites of the Hajj. The spiritual significance and inner meaning of Hajj are many folds but here the primary ones:

Sweeping the Abode of Heart, cleaning of all impurities, letting go of all worldly attachments When all vain glories and pride is swept clean from the heart, attachment with the dunya / samsara is dissolved, all ego is confinement are bade farewell, after the desire for material, wealth and fame is divorced the unity and harmony of mankind, of one family of God is realized - in that the real purpose of Hajj is attained. The teaching of Hajj is the message of universal love, single brotherhood and sisterhood of humanity and world peace.

Now a days because of modern transportation system traveling to Hajj is made very easy. It takes only few days to go to Hajj and return. In early days, people would endure tremendous struggle to reach for the Hajj, sometime walking by foot for many hundreds of miles, sometime by traveling by sea for days and months. In this age of modernity, even inside the rites of the Hajj, modernization have made the experience as easy on people as possible.

Embodying Submission to God In the Universal Way of Islam, every pillar of submission to God is recommended to purify a person’s heart and to give strength to the Connection with God and to give a wider scope to the meaning of submission to God. Once a seeker of God feel submission to God at the core of his or her being, that person feel freedom from the heavy impact of life and materialism that put people to psychological torture. Nothing else in life is equal being within the sphere of God’s pleasure. Among the basic five pillar over which the towering meaning and core of Islam is built is Hajj. The five pillars of submission are: To testify in the Oneness of God, to Pray, to Fast, to Give Charity to Poor and Pilgrimage to the Ancient House.

There are very few self-sacrificial act than Hajj. In this act, in submission to the call of God one leaves one’s wealth, business, job, family, relatives only to remember and fulfil the Commandments of God in the footstep of the Patriarch Abraham.

Preparation for the Real Journey For a true seeker of God when he or she sets out for the Hajj with the aspiration to achieve its Haqiqat (reality) he or she must remember death and prepare as he or she may prepare for the final journey. Hajj is the outward journey to remind the inward journey, the journey which is terribly real, the journey that takes on from the unreal and passing world to the real and eternal world.

Thus a pilgrimage who is preparing for the journey of Hajj must close all accounts and transactions to everyone, must seek forgiveness from everyone in his known circle of people, if there are any debts, he or she must fulfil it. If there are family members who are dependent, he must fulfil their duties and do his part to ensure their care. Forgiveness must be sought from relatives and friends for any known and unknown mistakes. At the time of leaving the house, one must let go off every attachment and desire for wealth, spouse, children and anything of the worldly life. Just as one must do when one has to before death.

Hajj is in a sense, a way to die before death.

during Hajj are white, un-hemmed clothes which are used for burial. Literally “mutu qabla anta mutu” (die before you die) is practiced during the Hajj obligations. It’s noteworthy that Jesus (on whom be peace) used to wear un-hemmed clothes, which were off-white or cream in colour. When someone is in the state of Ihram, wearing Ihram they become like a mendicant, they are not allowed to kill any living animal, they are not allowed bodily passion, must not wear makeup or wear perfume, are asked to cut off their hair beforehand (for male). Thus they become like sometime who have vowed for the highest vow of a monk as found in many other spiritual traditions. Hajj is a reminder of the inevitable, death and return to the Great Reality.

Witnessing Unity The highest symbol of Hajj is Oneness. It in seeing the Oneness of Humanity, devoid of all separation, no separation of gender, no separation of race, no separation of nationality one witness the One who is behind every face, the One Creator of creation.

People of logic may ask, “If my devotion to God is enough, my faith on Him is enough, why do I have to travel to certain place for anything?”

The answer to this question is: “As in the world, the employer asks his employees to perform certain task and it is these instructions which act as a link between the employer and the employee, similar it the case for God and His family, the creation. In this world, the superior ask the sub-ordinates for certain act to be performed. It is through carrying out the instructions of the employer that the employee earn satisfaction, when such acts are performed properly, the employer become satisfied. The employer has more rights over the employee to give instructions. God, who is the Lord of entire creation has more rights over everyone and it is His commands by performing of which one attains His good pleasure. “Indeed they have not estimated God with the right estimate due to Him.” - Qu’ran. Thus all sacred commands has no other better reasoning and goal but the pleasure of the Lord.

Thus the spiritual significance of Hajj is also attainment of God’s pleasure. May God accept and be pleased with us all.

When he sees Me in all, and sees all in Me then I never leave Him, and He never leaves me.

And he in this oneness of love, loves me in whatever He sees.

Wherever this man may live in truth, he lives in Me.

Al-Hajj (Pilgrimage to the House of God and Mecca) Belief in the Oneness of God is the most fundamental principle of Islam; Prayer regulates the believer’s relationship with God; Zakah controls his relations with society; fasting exercises and strengthens his will: the Hajj offers Muslims, as one nation, the opportunity to exercise the high principles, values and objectives upon which Islam bases the shaping of the individual and the nation. It is the climax of the individual’s spiritual life and an embodiment of the unity of the nation which is based on a brotherhood in the faith that towers above narrow considerations or race, nationality, colour or tongue. In this light we

can see the following functions of the hajj which complement the functions of the other pillars of Islam: (a) A psychological and spiritual function: The hajj is an exercise of the will of the believer at its height, where he rises above dayto-day preoccupations and casts off what men ordinarily cherish. Thus we can understand the deep symbolic meaning of the clothes he wears during ihram (the state of consecration). They symbolize his inner state which makes him leave behind his family, home, wealth, position and everything dear to him. With his free choice he leaves the good things that were lawful to him and enters a spiritual haram (sanctuary) which he sets up within himself before he enters with his body into the haram in Mecca. (b) The stations at which pilgrims must stop to enter the state of ihram serve to remind them of the inner renunciation of worldly preoccupations so that their pilgrimage may produce its desired effect.

The stations of the hajj are entrances through which pilgrims pass coming from every distant quarter, repairing to the sacred House, whither the message of Truth was imparted to Muhammad S. In this blessed land the Muslims meet to live a spiritual life on a special level, enacting a rite that exposes the exalted value of Islam and where equality, brother-hood and unity among the faithful is embodied, where response to the call of God comes before that to any other call: “And proclaim among men the pilgrimage: they shall come to you on foot and upon every lean beast; they shall come from every deep ravine.” (Quran 22:27) The hajj is a unique gathering that gives the pilgrims an experience unavailable to them at home in their usual life. In hajj there is an exercise of strict self-discipline and control where sacred things are revered and the life of even plants and birds is made inviolable and everything lives in safety: “And he that venerates the sacred things of God, it shall be better for him with his Lord …” (Quran 22:30); “And he that venerates the Symbols of God, it surely is from devotion of the heart” (Quran 22:32); “And when We made the House (at Mecca) a resort for men and a sanctuary…” (Quran 2:125) (c) The hajj is a rigorous training in self-control: “The pilgrimage is in the well-known months. He that undertakes the duty of the pilgrimage during them must abstain from coition, ungodliness and acrimonious dispute, and whatever good you do, Allah is aware of it. Take provision (from it) for yourselves, for the best provision is piety.” (Quran 2:197) “Take provision” indicates that the effects of this experience should extend to the conduct of the Muslim in his normal life afterwards, and that he should live and conduct himself by the values that manifest piety, “the best provision”. (d) A social function: this has many aspects and dimensions in the life of Muslims as a nation. The Quran points to this function in the hajj verse cited above: “And proclaim among men the pilgrimage: they shall come from every deep ravine; they shall come to witness things of benefit to them and mention the Name of Allah.” “To witness things of benefit to them” is a general expression that covers benefits to individuals and groups in the religious and worldly spheres. The fact that it is placed in the verse before mentioning God’s Name (which is the foremost ob-

jective in the devotional act of hajj) is intended (I think, but God knows best) to dispel any thought that acquiring benefit from trade, for instance, necessarily contradicts the spirit of the hajj. What we deduce from this verse was explicitly stated elsewhere in the Quran: “It is no sin for you to seek the bounty of your Lord…” (Quran 2:198). The expression, “seeking His bounty” covers, in other usages, benefits from trading, as in “…and others travel in the land in search of the bounty of Allah…” (Quran 73:20). The only condition is that such worldly benefits remain a secondary objective and not a diversion of the spiritual meaning of the hajj. The desired balance is maintained in the verse by using the concessionary expression, “It is no sin for you…”

In all events, the “benefits” the pilgrims could derive from the experience of the hajj, for themselves, their countries, and the Muslim nation as a whole could, with good planning and guarantees for effectiveness and continuity, bring about enormous changes in the life of Muslims of which they are in dire need. The benefits are numerous, perennial and capable of increase from age to age and of taking various forms to suit different individuals, groups or countries. We understand this in the Arabic expression from the use of the indefinite plural in the word, “benefits”.

Within the limited scope of this paper I will give one example of the benefits Muslims could derive from the hajj, properly understood.

The hajj gives an opportunity to all Muslims from all groups, classes, organizations, systems and governments from all over the Muslim world to meet annually in a great congress. The time and venue of this congress has been set by their One God. Invitation to attend is open to every Muslim.

No-one has the power to bar anyone. Any such attempt would amount to the crime of debarring Muslims from the House of God which He has made “a resort for men and a sanctuary”. Every Muslim who attends is guaranteed full safety and freedom as long as he himself does not violate its safety: “Whoever enters it is safe.” (Quran 3:97). Such a congress is a miniature of the Muslim nation and offers an unique opportunity for discussion of all Muslims’ problems and issues whether related to the system of government, economics, culture, education, military and defence matters, industry, trade or commerce and the condition of Muslims in every part of the Muslim world. Such discussion could take place on the level of the layman, or at specialist level, in the hajj atmosphere of detachment, inspired by the sense of unity instead of self-seeking individualism, and enriched by a multiplicity of ideas and experience. It could also take place on the level of Muslim decision-makers and rulers whom the hajj calls from the towers of authority to mingle together and with ordinary Muslims in complete equality before their One Lord.

What a tremendous assembly that should be, and what great “benefits” the Muslim could derive from it!

We do not, in fact, go too far when we ask for the unity of the Muslims to be the first issue to which all efforts should be directed during the hajj season: the efforts of rulers, politicians, economists, thinkers, jurists and all efforts of the media. Let the unity of the Muslim ummah and work for it be “the provisions” Muslims take from the hajj when they make for the House of God from every corner in their lands, and let this unity be their starting and finishing point when they seek the “benefits” to which God has invited them on the hajj. If this happens (and we pray to God to open the Muslims’ hearts, eyes and ears to it) it would restore to the hajj its foremost function, and realize the message of this devotional act which, alas, appears nowadays to be devoid of it: yet “God prevails in His purpose, but most men do not know it.”

(cont. from last issue) KARMA Phal Siddhant states that whatever one gets are the fruits of his own actions. But to an inquisite mind, many questions arises about “Karma (Actions)”, “Phal (Fruits)”, “One (Atma / Soul)”, “Gets”, and many questions arises out of the answers.

1. Karmas are the actions performed by Atma (soul). Actions mean anything that we do including thinking and inaction.

2. Atma (soul) is different from our body,

say I am an Atma and I have a body in which I reside. The actions are performed by the Atma with the help of the body. All living things in this universe, both plants and animals, are living because they have an Atma in them. There are innumerable Atmas in these Universe of which some reside in a given body and some reside free of any given body. All Atmas are bound by Karma Phal Siddhant.

3. The human body is the best form of body in which in which an Atma can reside and attain Moksha. The body includes brain, heart, mind, senses, intelligence, etc which are the tools through which the Atma analyses the situation. Atma is the one who takes the decision and act. Atma acts with the help of the body. Atma is eternal, but body is not.

Atma is conscious, body is not. A body lives till an Atma lives in it and it dies after the Atma leaves it. After Atma leaves one body,

piness) is limited by the Prakriti in which he resides. Residing in his body, he will have to experience all – anand, happiness and sadness. Unlimited anand can be attained only in Moksha.

9. Atma has limited knowledge, strength, self control, etc. He is mostly free in his action but dependent for results / fruits. Whilst being free in action, it is appropriate for him to perform actions which are intended for and results in the general well being. Due to his limitations an Atma may not perform the desirable actions. Again, there are ways to increase one’s knowledge, strength and self control, which also requires action in that direction. An Atma is expected to evolve over various births and someday become apt in his actions. Only then he would be eligible for unlimited Anand, which he gets with Moksha.

How to: Find the perfect property to renovate for profit Three Birds realestate.com.au FINDING (and securing) the perfect property is probably one of the hardest things we do at Three Birds Renovations.

There’s no shortage of ugly houses out there just begging for a makeover, but getting your name on the title can be the biggest challenge.

Here are the key things you need to know when looking for a house to cosmetically renovate.

Find the right suburb If you buy in the wrong suburb, your profit could be down the toilet before the ink is even dry on the contract.

What you’re looking for is a suburb which has ‘price disparity’ – meaning there is a wide range of price points for similar properties. Do your research on what different properties in your target suburb have sold for and make a list of sold prices.

You need to look for two things specifically: What are un-renovated houses selling for and what are renovated houses selling for?

Renovated houses in your target suburb need to be selling for approximately 30% more than the un-renovated ones for there to be price disparity in that suburb.

Top tips: • Make sure you’re looking at comparable properties – the same number of bedrooms, block size, brick vs non-brick, location, parking.

• Only look at houses that have sold within the last 6-12 months. The more recent the sale the more closely it will reflect the current market.

• Sit down with the local real estate agents in that area – they could have the perfect property for you.

Finding the right house To attract the most number of buyers, look for a property that will suit the mainstream demographic in that area – if it’s a suburb dominated by prams and parks, look for a house that you can turn into the perfect family home.

The best houses to buy and renovate have a great footprint that don’t require a major extension, like a second storey, to add value.

Importantly, the whole house should be able to be cosmetically renovated under “exempt” or “complying” development from the local.

Usually the properties will have dated floorplans (lots of separate rooms with not much open living) and an original exterior (think ugly red brick). These homes can be quickly transformed by opening up the floorplan inside, cosmetically changing the outside (spraying the brick and new timber balustrade) and adding a modern alfresco

space in the backyard.

Top Tip: • Avoid houses that could have major buyer objections like a main road, powerlines, or zero backyard. Even corner blocks and battle-axes can be a turn-off to many.

Finding the right price Even if you’ve ticked the “right suburb, right house” box, you’re still a fair way from the finishing line in the property race. Getting the house for the right price is now your challenge – and it’s no mean feat.

We often miss out on properties to emotional buyers who are willing to pay “overs” because they see intrinsic value in the home that we don’t.

But for those of us looking to make a profit, it’s a business decision and we often have to walk-away because we’re not willing to pay a penny more than our profit calculator tells us we can.

To calculate your projected profit, look at your purchase price, renovation budget, other costs (don’t forget interest and tax) and the subtract from your sell price.

This calculation needs to become your new best friend before you start bidding at auctions – otherwise how will you know what you can afford to pay?

Top tip: Remember, this is a business transaction and you need to nominate a walkaway point ….. and more importantly, stick to it.

WINTER is over and we can hopefully start to say goodbye to colder weather as we move into spring and then head towards a hot summer.

Spring is the busiest time for the residential property market as more buyers look to sell.

This year it will be no exception so what else can we expect to see this season?

1. More houses on the market Spring is the preferred time for people to go to market. For some, it is because their gardens look best or if they are located close to the beach, the promise of a lifestyle can be a good selling point.

It may just be because there are more buyers out there or because agents are less likely to be on holidays. Regardless, if you are a buyer, there will be more choice out there.

2. High clearance rates in strong markets Clearance rates in both Melbourne and Sydney have been over 70% for some time now.

In Sydney, recent weeks have seen them exceed 80%.

While more stock on the market may reduce them, the strong performance of these markets on other housing indicators such as price growth, as well as more general economic data, would suggest that they will remain high.

3. More premium property entering the market If you have a very expensive house and you are looking to sell, chances are you will look to spring. More premium property enters the market in this season.

The drivers are likely to be similar to the rest of the market (e.g. nicer gardens) however, a high proportion of these properties also have water views which tend to look best in spring

as well.

4. No change in interest rates The next move in interest rates is likely to be down however, my tip is that the Reserve Bank will wait until the start of 2017 to make a move.

The bank now expects inflation to remain low until the end of next year, so unless there is some particularly bad news with GDP or unemployment figures they are likely to hold rates until next year. The movement of US rates will also be high on their watch list.

5. Stable or declining prices in some capitals Dynamics are very different across capital cities when it comes to price growth. Brisbane, Darwin, Adelaide and Perth have all seen prices decline over the past month. Adelaide has seen moderate growth while in Melbourne and Sydney increases remain strong.

Over the next three months, expect to see Melbourne and Sydney growth continue while conditions for price growth remain more muted in other capital cities.

6. Rents declining Lots of development and more investors in the market has meant that rents have been steadily declining. Over the past year they have dropped on average 0.3%.

It is likely that this steady decline will continue however across capital cities there is likely to be divergence. Sydney and Melbourne continue to see rent rises, driven by strong economic and population growth in those cities.

Surprisingly Hobart has seen some of the strongest rental increases of all capital cities and given no major changes expected to supply, economic growth or population growth over the next three months, this is likely to continue.

THE Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in Queensland is reminding property developers, business owners and real estate agents of the need to pay close attention to the accuracy of their advertising after issuing a $10,800 fine to Stockland North Lakes Pty Ltd, part of Stockland Corporation Limited.

Stockland, developer of the ‘SoLa’ residential property development in North Lakes, advertised properties as being a 22 minute train trip to the city, along the Moreton Bay rail link currently under construction.

The Moreton Bay rail draft timetable puts the trip at 46 minutes, more than double the time period represented.

Following the OFT investigation, Stockland corrected its advertising, advised potential customers of the error, and paid a $10,800 civil penalty notice.

Fair Trading Executive Director Brian Bauer said while there was no evidence Stockland had deliberately set out to mislead consumers, taking the time to ensure the accuracy of all claims made in advertising was essential.

“Consumers have the right to expect that claims made by businesses are accurate, can be substantiated, and can be relied upon inmaking a purchasing decision,” Mr Bauer said.

“The family home is the most significant purchase most consumers will ever make, so any representations made, particularly about its location, need to be accurate to ensure potential buyers can properly assess the value of that property. Representations claiming low travel times are designed to increase consumer interest in property, by demonstrating a quick and easy commute to the central business district.

By Emma Sorensen realestate.com.au MANY of us spend time renting while we save up to buy our own dream home.

So how can you get into your own place as quickly as possible while still paying the rent? We asked a financial adviser for his tips on what renters can do to increase their chances of buying.

The challenge of saving a deposit According to Martin Speiser from Masu Group, the biggest obstacle for renters who want to buy is saving a deposit, particularly in big cities where rents are high.

“Renters are spending a lot of their disposable income on rent,” Speiser says. “This makes saving very hard.”

“It is also tough for young people as lifestyle is a priority – so it’s hard to tell a twenty-something not to go out and party or travel,” he says.

Despite the challenge, Speiser says saving a deposit is critical.

“Banks no longer lend 100% of the purchase price, so without a deposit you cannot buy,” he says. “It is also more difficult for parents or others to go as guarantors of loans these days”.

But while saving a deposit should be the main focus of renters who want to buy their own property, there are some other things to keep in mind.

Look at the bigger picture Speiser says changes to the first home owner’s grant and the limiting of stamp duty concessions in some states doesn’t help.

This has often happened at the very same time as property prices increased. (Refer table below) This means it pays to spend time looking at the bigger picture and how this could affect your ability to buy property, whether

positively or negatively.

“As prices increase, affordability reduces, and the deposit required increases,” Speiser says.

Speiser also says that, far from being a benefit to new home buyers, low interest rates actually make saving harder.

“You would think low interest rates would help buyers,” Speiser says. “However, if you are trying to save in a bank and interest yields are 2%, that’s not a lot of growth you are getting.”

Bank policies on lending have also been shifting – not only the Loan to Valuation Ratio (LVR or how much they will lend on the value of the property) but also their willingness to lend in certain areas where they feel there is oversupply, like Docklands in Melbourne.

“If they do lend, it may be at lower LVRs,” Speiser says. “And the lower the LVR the the higher the deposit needed.”

Prepare yourself financially Speiser’s advice to those looking to purchase property is simple.

“Save, save, save, and try not to rack up personal loans and credit card debt,” he says. “If there are large credit card debts it could be detrimental to your borrowing ability.”

And be pragmatic about how you can help yourself achieve your goal.

“Many young people also choose to stay at home longer to save,” Speiser says.

Research the property market Speiser says that, while most people know where they would like to live, you should always thoroughly research the property market and be open to exploring the benefits of new areas.

Consider essentials such as access to public transport, schools, shops and other amenities, as well as any negatives.

ACCORDING to a report just released home ownership is slipping away for many Australians and soon less than half of all adults will own their own home.

The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Report (HILDA), a national snapshot released annually, has been running since 2001. Researchers interview the same 17,000 Australians each year, to create a snapshot of the nation. The report spans every topic of household life, including income, savings, employment, family life, and health.

The report found that between 2001 and 2014 owner-occupied houses have declined by 3.5 percentage points from 63.8% in 2001 to 59.7% in 2014.

Rates of home ownership have declined in all parts of Australia, but the extent of the decline varies. The decline was greatest in Victoria (7.8 percentage-points), followed by New South Wales (4.3 percentage points) and South Australia (2.5 percentage points).

There was little change in Queensland and Western Australia.

Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory were excluded in the measurement due to small sample sizes.

Not unexpectedly the decline in home ownership has been concentrated on those aged under 55. Home ownership among persons aged 25–34 declined from 38.7% in 2002 to 29.2% in 2014, with much of the decline occurring between 2010 and 2014. Among persons aged 35–44, home ownership declined from 63.2% to 52.4%, and among persons aged 45–54, it declined from 75.6% to 67.4%.

The report also found that the single most important asset component in household wealth portfolios is the family home, accounting for 43% of the value of household assets in 2014.

Falling ownership rates amongst first home buyers are also borne out by ABS statistics on housing finance.

The proportion of first home buyers, as part of the total owner-occupied housing finance commitments in May 2016, fell to 14.2 per cent and is the lowest since May 2004. This is despite 18 interest rate cuts in that time.

With first home buyers finding it increasingly difficult to enter the housing market, home ownership in Australia is declining after four decades of stable levels.

With forecast strong population growth in Australia as well as changes in the demographic composition it is a policy priority that the supply of affordable housing is addressed.

Affordable housing is a complex issue, with a number of economic, social and infrastructure factors influencing it. These include: the deposit gap for first home buyers; demographic change; the effect of stamp duties and taxes; development application processes, skills shortages and; lack of urban infrastructure.

At a roundtable discussion on housing affordability convened by the REIA in 2014 with participation by Government and industry leaders from real estate, construction, finance and community sectors, it was agreed that the availability of affordable housing is a goal that is shared by governments and all sectors of the community. It impacts on the functioning of the economy as well as the wellbeing of individuals and the cohesiveness of communities and society. According to the HILDA report owning a home is such a gold standard in Australia that it acts as a predictor of many other social indicators.

The roundtable participants all agreed that a priority policy issue is to address the undersupply of housing.

REIA strongly believes in the benefits of continuing the high ownership level in Australia, particularly as the population ages, and strongly advocates that the Commonwealth Government take a lead in helping to implement solutions that will assist aspiring first

home buyers. Australia needs a suite of measures that both federal and state governments can collectively action. Such assistance should be uniform and should not discriminate between buyers of new or established housing.

Home ownership has always been the biggest single financial commitment that Australians will make in their lifetimes – and the biggest source of financial security as they head into retirement.

Superannuation is the second most important financial asset of Australian households. The HILDA report shows that for men aged 30 to 34 their superannuation balances are on average around $50k and for women in this age group the average balance is around $30k.

The average balances increase to around $75k for men and just under $50k for women in the age group 35 to 39.

Allowing access to a proportion of superannuation funds would help prospective buyers to bridge the deposit gap faster.

Superannuation and home ownership are both components of a retiree’s “nest egg” and not competing products.

By buying earlier in life retirees have every prospect of having a higher equity on retirement and a larger “nest egg” on downsizing.

Too much attention has been focused on the accumulation of a nest egg through superannuation at the expense of other more practical considerations which not only improve the quality of life at an earlier age but result in a greater retirement “nest egg”.

Access to superannuation for the purchase of a first home could help reverse the trend of falling home ownership and address the looming significant policy problem of large numbers of long-term renters aged 45 years and over remaining in the rental sector and possibly requiring rental support in later years.

The use of retirement savings for a first home purchase has already proven to be successful in Canada, New Zealand and Singapore.

Much has been written about younger persons having different priorities to their parents. Despite this the dream of owning your own ‘castle’ has changed little. More and more first home buyers today are buying an investment property that they tend to move into later. A survey by Mortgage Choice last year showed that 36.6% of investors were first-time buyers – up from 21.1% the previous year. This trend is confirmed by a Genworth survey which shows that nearly 30% of first home buyers buying an investment property did so because they weren’t able to meet the deposit gap for their desired first home property. A further 24% said that renting out the property helps pay off the mortgage faster.

Whilst increasing numbers of first home buyers are taking this path to home ownership this is not the long term answer. Housing affordability has remained in the “too hard basket” for too long. The release of the HILDA report is a timely reminder that the issue won’t go away.

Bollywood & Entertainment Jackson Durai director, Metro hero come together DHARANIDHARAN, the director of Burma and Jackson Durai, has cast Shirish, who played the lead in Metro, as the hero of his next film, which will be a murder mystery set in Chennai. "I had originally planned this as my fourth film, but the project that I was supposed to take up as my third film got pushed to May 2017, and so, I decided to take this up as a quickie," says the director.

The yet-to-be-titled film, he reveals, is based on a real-life incident that made it to the newspapers. The pre-production work of the film is presently underway and the team is planning to reveal the first look of the film next week, even though the actual shoot will only happen in December. "We are intending to go on floors only by the first or second week of December because rain play crucial role in the script. The entire shoot will get

over by March," he assures.

Sonu’s debut production is titled Tutak Tutak Tutiya. It was previously titled 2 in 1.

Sonu took to Twitter to announce that promotions of the film have started.

Prabhudheva, who will also be a part of the film, shared a photograph of himself, Sonu Sood and Remo D’souza on Twitter.

He has confessed that he was greatly influenced by Akiro’s work while growing up and wanted to make a film in a similar style. In fact, he is such a big fan of the Japanese director that he named his son Akira, as a mark of respect for one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema.

3. Pawan is a stage name Even though everyone knows him as Pawan Kalyan, his real name is Konidela Kalyan Babu. There is an interesting story behind how he adopted the stage name of Pawan. The Powerstar actually has a black belt in karate. So one day, while organising a martial arts presentation, he took up the stage name of Pawan. He ended up really liking it and used the stage name for his films as well. And this is how Kalyan Babu

became Pawan Kalyan.

4. A strict vegetarian Pawan is a strict vegetarian. He has always followed a vegetarian diet and he makes sure that he gets served vegetarian food wherever he goes, be it for shooting for his films or a political visit. In fact, he owns a farmhouse where he personally grows his favourite fruits and vegetables. This is how he fulfils his passion for gardening.

5. He married his costume designer Renu Desai has been the costume designer for most of Pawan Kalyan’s film. However, the professional relationship between the two grew into something more and the two got married in 2009, only to get divorced three years later in 2012. Pawan is currently in his third marriage with Anna Lezhneva.

6. Multiple talents The Powerstar has tried his luck in many things other than acting including direction, story and screenplay, stunt coordination, playback singing, choreography and producing films. His only directorial venture was the film ‘Johnny’ in 2003, which didn’t fare so well at the box office. The actor has been trying to direct more films since then.

7. Extremely secular At a recent Jana Sena Party rally that was held in Tirupati, the Powerstar disclosed an amazing fact from his personal life. Addressing the massive crowd he said that he believed and practised true secularism because he followed Hinduism, where as his daughter got baptised as a Christian according to the wished of his wife Anna Lezhneva. He did this to silence his detractors who claimed that he hired only people of his caste in his political party.

Queensland Premier and Brisbane Lord Mayor host civic reception for Olympians THOUSANDS of Queenslanders packed into the Brisbane CBD to honour Rio Olympians in a welcome home parade on Friday 2 September.

More than 60 athletes, including 20 medallists, waved to the crowd in the Queen Street Mall.

There were Carnivale dancers to keep the Rio feeling alive,

as athletes and school children mingled along the way.

Queensland Olympians present included the state's gold medallist rugby stars, silver medallist sailor Matthew Belcher, and 20-kilometre walker Dane Bird-Smith.

All proudly wore their medals.

Australia's Rio medal tally of 29 may have been down from

London but the Queensland fans did not care.

The keys to the city were given to local Rugby Sevens Gold medallists Shannon Parry and Charlotte Caslick.

The parade finished in King George square, where the Olympians were met by the Premier and Lord Mayor. The event was live televised on channel seven.

Invited guest and dignitaries were in the front of the stage in a fenced off area, while the general public filled up King George square.

After the speeches and presentation, invited guest and the Olympians were escorted to Ithaca Room in City hall for a cocktail reception by the Premier and Lord Mayor.

Ganga’s target GOPIO Queensland and QFFA celebrate Fiji Olympic Gold Medal win of 2,000 medals draws near

FIJI, having made its Olympic debut at the 1956 Summer Games, has competed at fourteen Summer Games and three Winter Games. Its athletes have taken part in archery, athletics, boxing, judo, sailing, shooting, swimming, weightlifting and rugby sevens.

In the 2016 Summer Olympics, the Fiji rugby team won a gold medal, the country's first ever Olympic Medal , creating history.

Large scale celebration were organised throughout the country and also across the globe where ever Fijian now reside.

Latest News from Fiji is that Fiji may be looking for a new Rugby coach.

FIJI rugby officials accepted Friday that they had lost gold-medal winning sevens maestro Ben Ryan and confirmed they would now advertise for a new coach.

GANGA Prasad is close to achieving his goal of 2,000 medals! At the Sunshine Coast Athletics Championships held in July he won 10 medals - 4 Gold, 5 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Ganga told Brisbane Indian Times that he had a great performance and also some personal bests at the championship.

In August at Ipswich Winter Athletics Championships he once again won 10 medals - 9 Gold and 1 Silver. Apart from a great performance he also made

records in his age category in some of the events.

Ganga competed in Open and Master Grades shot put, discus, long and triple jump, high jump and 100m.

The next Championships are Gympie Winter Athletics Championships followed by Pan Pacific Masters Games in the Gold Coast.
