From the Publisher SPRING has sprung, but how do you know for sure that it’s the season of rebirth in the River City? We know that spring is here when the magpie population explodes, the tights and leggings disappear, and the River Fire and Brisbane Festival is on. Hay fever is on the increase and for us “DESIS” Navrati and garba season starts. You have just said goodbye to the heater, and the pool needs cleaning, weddings and storm season starts. These are some tell tale signs of Spring in Brisbane, oh did I miss to mention the finals? The weather has a sudden change, AND it is much warmer now, welcome to spring!

As we all prepare for upcoming Diwali, let’s all plan to spring clean our inner selves as well, let’s plan on working in a united manner. It is Ok to agree to disagree as long as it is done in an orderly fashion. Let’s all progress in community services sans egos.

I am not sure if you have noticed that this is our issue number one (01) of volume (13). That’s right we have completed twelve years of publication. This could not have been possible without the support of all our readers, advertisers, contributors, distributers and printers. The journey has been a big learning curve for me; I have had the opportunity of attending so many community functions, and believe me you I enjoy attending them all. I have grown as a person by attending these functions and getting to better know many communities.

While Brisbane Indian Times has completed twelve years, Australian Indian Radio is but a baby, but one who is growing fast.

Australian Indian Radio is gathering momentum as the programming settles in with new presenters bringing in new interesting and popular shows. Two more studios have been added to cater for the growing needs. We welcome anyone who wishes to present any particular program, all regional language groups are more than welcome. Panel operating training will be

provided. The number of listeners keep growing every day, we often get asked that what is the frequency of our broadcast, we are an internet based online radio station, which means we do rely on any frequency but rely wholly on the internet. What it means is that the broadcast is not limited to a frequency coverage area but is available worldwide via the web.

On 2 October, GOPIO Qld assisted by FICQ and AIBC observed Gandhi Jayanti, this the way all major function should be celebrated, all working hand in hand. This model is the welcomed by Indian High Commission. The three organisations have their distinct roles and should all work hand in hand to complement each other.

I was fortunate to attend the tenth anniversary Curryfest celebration in Woolgoolga.

The event was very well organised and presented. The festival recognises the tremendous efforts of the Sikh community in Coffs Harbour region. Our Band “Brisbane Babas Band” was called once again as the main attraction of the function.

The premier’s reception for the Indian Community will once again be held on 27th October, I hope to catch up with many of you there. The numbers at this function is growing every year and is now organised in the speakers green rather than the parliamentary annexe where it used to be held before.

I must pen off now, wishing you all the very best for upcoming Navrartri and Diwali, may the true essence of Diwali light up the hearts and minds of people during this festive season.

Let us move away from darkness to light and let our good deeds suppress our evil thoughts. May Mother Laxmi shower her blessings on all?

MIGRATION Law is a very complicated set of processes that evolve over a period of time. In July 2012, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (formerly DIAC) introduced a new system for the Point Tested skilled migration known as the Skill Select.

Skill Select allows the Department to introduce quotas and cap the number of application that can be granted every financial year. The quotas are usually announced at the commencement of the financial year and also enlist the nominated occupations that will be considered for that particular year.

Skill Select is a lengthy and difficult process for most the visa applicants as it requires the prospective visa applicants to initially submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). After submitting the EOI, while the applicants wait for an invitation to apply for the visa, applicants have to maintain lawful status to remain in Australia. This would mean that the visa applicants will need to hold/apply for some other visa to remain lawfully in Australia or alternatively have to depart overseas to wait for the invitation.

The Department considers inviting the prospective visa applicant depending on the quotas allocated for the financial year.

Due to this, there are few popular occupations primarily in Information Technology and accounting, where there are more applications pending in the Skill Select EOI compared to the available quotas. As a result of this, there are still many applications in the queue anticipating invites to

apply for the visa. However, recently, there have been reports from the Department that certain occupations have met their quotas for this year and will no longer be considered until next financial year.

As a result some prospective visa applicants, have to apply for alternative visas or have to wait for the invitation while overseas. A few occupations still have some limited quota availability and those applicants with higher credentials / points score will stand a better chance to be considered for the remaining places.

Dinner reception hosted for His Excellency Indian High Commissioner Mr. Navdeep Suri From page 1 A SPLENDID dinner reception was hosted for His Excellency Indian High Commissioner Mr. Navdeep Suri, by the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland (FICQ) along with the support of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Qld, Australia India Business Council (AIBC) Qld Chapter and other community organisations on 20th September 2015 at Brisbane.

Mr. Suri had visited us early this year, when he took over his office, where FICQ had welcomed Indian High Commissioner in Australia by hosting a luncheon. At that time only a few of the community leaders had a chance to meet him and hear him share his experience, wisdom and vision for Indians in Australia. that proved to be an excellent lead on achieving great miles for India by promoting Indian culture. Later a number of other community members expressed interest in meeting with up with the High Commissioner. As Mr Suri, also expressed his interest in reaching the wider community to listen to them and also respond to their expectations, a dinner reception was hosted to get the Indian communities in Queensland together.

Mr. Navdeep Suri joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1983 and has served in India’s diplomatic missions in Cairo, Damascus, Washington, Dar es Salaam and London and as India’s Consul General in Johannesburg.

He has also headed the West Africa and Public Diplomacy divisions at the Ministry of External Affairs. His innovative use of social media in public diplomacy has received extensive recognition and two prestigious awards.

The evening started with the MC of the event, Mrs. Prakruthi Mysore Gururaj, PRO of FICQ, acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land, paying respects to the Elders, acknowledging the supporting organizations; GOPIO, AIBC, Mr. Shyam Das, director of Target tour and travels and all of our Indian communities of Queensland, followed by welcome speech by Mr. Navin Kumar, Secretary of FICQ. Later at the most looked forward speech, Mr.Suri shared his aspiration to establish greater collaboration between India and Australia.

Mr. Suri highlighted some real examples of collaboration that is already happening between Australia and India in recent times which was not a norm previously. For example, an Australian strategic research group is working together on 230 projects from bio-technology to genetics to nanotechnology.

Mr. Suri, highlighted the three main drivers of collaboration between the two countries; firstly, mutuality of interest to grow the 6 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, October, 2015

economy through energy plants, skill training and educational development programs.

Secondly, Australia making India part of its security vision and thirdly, India being the largest source of skilled migrants and the second largest growing community in Australia, he foresees the Indian community playing a major role in building relationships between the countries whose impact will be felt 10 to 15 years down the road.

It is worth mentioning that Mr. Suri, along with his administrative responsibility as Indian High Commissioner, wishes to promote collaboration through Indian communities in Australia. He sees this to be challenging as well as a great opportunity to the community which gives a substantial responsibility to Indian community to be accountable in achieving the vision. He emphasized on having focus on implementation to achieve the set vision.

Mr.Suri then requested for a Q&A session to be conducted to address any key issues of the community and the session was very well facilitated by Mr. Umesh Chandra.

Many of the community members took an active participation by putting forth their questions on various topics from domestic violence to advancing features on VFS website to support for community services.

Mr.Navdeep Suri with great patience and diligence answered all the questions assuring the support where possible.

After the dinner which was very well organised by Mr. Anjaneya Reddy, treasurer of FICQ and Mrs Preeti Suraj, FICQ program co-ordinator, the event was concluded by vote of thanks by Mr. Yousuf Alikhan, President of GOPIO. As Mr.Suri mentioned in his speech, the main driving factor for the community to rise is in building the community relationship, our member organisations proved it by extending their great support and assistance for the event to be successful. This has brought forward the spirit to all Indian communities to stand as one to collaborate and service the community in future.

Gandhi Jayanti celebrated in Brisbane

GOPIO Queensland in collaboration with FICQ and AIBC, organised the second Gandhi Jayanthi in Roma Street Parklands. GOPIO Queensland decided in 2014 that they would hold this event on an annual basis. The function was held in the Spring Hill court of Roma Street Parkland which is close to gate four and five; GandhiJi’s statue is located at gate six.

The function began by call to order by Umesh Chandra, who discharged the MC duties for the first part of the program. Umesh Chandra mentioned that on this special day we should never forget Lal Bahadur Shastri, as he too was born on 2nd October.

First speaker of the day was Yousuf Alikhan president of GOPIO Queensland, who welcomed everyone to the function and spoke on the significance of the day. Next up Was Mrs Archana Singh, Honorary Counsel for India in Queensland, Mrs Singh acknowledged the community leaders present before her speech.

from this point onwards and he introduced the key note speaker Palani Thevar, interesting point to note was that it was Palani’s birthday on the day as well.

Palani delivered a well researched speech titled Mahatma Gandhi’s approach to Non Violent communication and mentioned that GandhiJi was not his favourite in the beginning, but later on as he realised what Gandhi Ji was all about, Palani became a strong believer of Gandhinian philosophy .

Next on the program was some of Gandhi ji, favourite Bhajans performed by Sangeet Premi Club members and assisted on Tabla by Harry Singh of Diva Jyothi Jagrati Sansthan. Following the Bhanjans everyone went to Gandhiji’s statue for the floral tribute. Mrs Kalpana Naik and Mrs Usha Chandra facilitate this session.

by Australian Indian Radio, who reported live from the location, Intech Institute of Technology played a major role in the facilitation of the whole event. The event was well patronised by Heads of many Indian organisations.

Gandhi Ji statute in Brisbane was made possible by the greater Indian Community in Brisbane; GOPIO Queensland via Umesh Chandra had an application with Brisbane City council for a Statue

to be erected. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in one of previous visits to Brisbane had discussed this idea with Hemant Naik and others. With G20 happening in Brisbane, it was the right moment to get the project completed and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji. The cause being the same soon the two ideas were merged into one and a committee was formed to complete the project. The project was completed on time despite time restriction and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji. It had been a huge task that would not have been possible without the assistance of many including Mrs Archana Singh, Honorary Counsel for India in Queensland, Indian High Commissions in Canberra, Brisbane City council and the Gandhi Statue committee.

READING has again received a gold star from children across Brisbane with more than 4,000 children participating in Council’s Gold Star Reading Club Program.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the Gold Star Reading Program encouraged primary school aged children to develop a passion for reading, while rewarding them for their progress.

“Gold Star participants are set monthly reading challenges and will receive an activity book that includes reading suggestions, a place to record their reading progress and fun activities,” Cr Quirk said.

“During the program, children received an activity book including progress charts, reading suggestions, competition entry forms and fun reading activities, as well as working with their local library.

“Participants were rewarded with incentive prizes as well as a certificate of achievement and gold star medallion at the end of the program, at the end of August.

“This year, the Gold Star Reading Club program attracted 4,792 participants all over the city.”

Cr Quirk said the three month program was designed to encourage and further develop the reading and literary skills of primary aged school children by rewarding them for their reading achievements.

“The purpose of the program is to promote reading as a fun activity and foster a sense of inclusiveness amongst primary school aged children,” he said.

This program supports Council’s libraries in providing a vibrant learning environment in local communities.

Special book launch of “TRANSCENDANCE” at BAPS Swami Narayan Temple in Brisbane BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Brisbane, organised a special book launch to celebrate the release of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s book ‘TRANSCENDENCE: MY SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES WITH PRAMUKH SWAMIJI ’ which coincided with the Jaljhilani Ekadashi Utsav on Sunday, 27 September 2015.

The event was held in the presence of Indian-Australian community leaders, representing various Indian cultural organizations. The event served as an occasion to pay tribute to the late former president of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and honour his legacy with the Brisbane launch of his final book.

It was a great event and an opportunity for Indian Community members to engage with each other and further strengthen Indian ties and culture.

ARYA Pratinidhi Sabha of Queensland had its Annual General Meeting at Queensland Vedic Cultural Centre on Sunday 13 September.

The Cultural Centre project was discussed in detail, and members had deliberations on the project. The Sabha has worked with various organisation this year, and it was discussed that organisation like ours should get together and work towards achieving their desired outcomes. It can only be possible if there is support from all other organisations. The President thanked all the organisations for their continued support and donations which is greatly helping the Cultural Centre project.

Sangeet Mela 2015 – A glorious celebration of Indian Classical Culture SEPTEMBER 19 saw Queensland Multicultural Centre hosting Sangeet Mela 2015, Australia's premiere festival dedicated to both Hindustani and Carnatic classical music and dance. The event was a big success, with the packed venue rejoicing in the resonant tones of sitar, violin, tabla, mridingam, vocals and much more from early afternoon until late in the night. The calibre of the performances was such that each new item was eagerly awaited.

The opening session highlighted the Sangeet Premi Rising Star Award winners – 5 young artists who were selected for their dedication to excellence in Indian classical arts.

Congratulations to Mathuja Bavanendrakumar (Bharat Natyam), Sanjey Sivaananthan (tabla solo), Manbir Singh (Hindustani vocal), Roshini Sriram (Carnatic vocal) and Arthavan Selvanathan (mridangam) for their admirable efforts in reaching such high standards despite primarily growing up outside Mother India.

Then followed sublime Hindustani vocals by Kumar Gaurav Kohli (Jalandhar) whose performance included an amazing Raga Mala effortlessly traversing 18 ragas in the space of a few minutes, and the festival closed with renowned Carnatic vocalist Smt Manda Sudharani (Vizag), with fantastic accompaniment by interstate artists Sridhar Chari (mridangam) and Kranthi Kiran Mudigonda (violin).

We were graced with the presence of several international artists, starting with beautiful Bharat Natyam dance by Janani Ganapathi (Switzerland), immediately followed by one of the day's most popular items, a tabla solo by Pt Pooran Maharaj (Varanasi) who presented compositions in the traditional Benares Gharana style made famous by his father Pt Kishan Maharaj.

Along the way local artists Dr Indranil Chatterjee (sitar) and Dr Mansey Kinarivala (vocal) matched the high standards of the visiting artists. Brisbane rallies against UBER DOZENS of angry taxi drivers have rallied in Brisbane calling for ride-sharing app UberX to be banned.

Simultaneous protests, organised by the Australian Taxi Federation, were held around Australia to draw attention to the unfair playing field created by a lack of regulation around UberX's operation, with drivers claiming their revenue has been cut by a third since it was introduced.

"The public supporting Uber because of their cheap fare should realise one thing Uber is not there for the people, taxis are because the government regulates them to be pro-people, but Uber is only here to make money," driver Padam Jadon, 36, said in Brisbane.

Taxi drivers want Uber shut down, or at least a level playing field where Uber drivers have to pay the same fees as Taxi drivers.

They say Uber is ruining family run businesses, with many people set to lose their livelihoods.

David Singh who represents Victorian taxi and hire car families, said 24-hour strikes in Victoria, Queensland, WA and NSW, will

be organised, with other states also considering action "Enough is enough. We will start striking for 24 hours from next week," Mr Singh told the crowd outside government offices.

Taxi owners and drivers in Brisbane rallied outside Parliament house and demanded that Premier Anastacia Pallaszcuk take action, the very vocal slogan said “we want justice, and we want it now”.

They complained that Uber drivers had the unfair fair advantage, there was no regulation; the service was in fact a defacto taxi service disguised as ride sharing. Uber operation was not based in Australia hence they could not be regulated, it operated as a web based business.

Nash Dosangh from the Taxi Owners association met community leaders to get support in this plight of the Taxi operators.

Uber has been targeting “Indian” Desi drivers via advertisements in local ethnic media.

Woolgoolga Curryfest celebrates 10 years of culture, cuisine and good community fun THIS year’s Driscoll’s Curryfest celebrated its 10th anniversary - and that meant an extra big party.

To get the Party started Brisbane’s famous live Bhangra Band “Brisbane Babas Band was called in. Brisbane Babas Band performed at the sold out Bollywood musical held at C.ex. The Musical was a specially scripted performance, Brisbane Babas Band prepared special songs to fit in with the script, these songs were not the ones that Brisbane Babas Band does normally.

The script began in Punjab were young men were leaving their villages for distant lands, and continued on with the story of them finding their way to Woolgoolga, working hard on the farms. The script later deals with their settlement and than journey back to Punjab to get married, coming back to Woolgoolga, settling down accruing land and celebrating curry fest.

Brisbane Babas Band was complimented by the well choreographed dancers “Sirens Dancing Group” from Sydney, for the dancers it is challenging to choreograph to a bands live music. The four member team dance troupe did really well. The Bollywood musical was the talk of the town for weeks.

On the main Festival day Brisbane Babas Band had three major performances, during the day and in the grand finale performance, as last year the crowd it not want the band to stop playing and kept asking for more numbers.

Normally held in April, this year’s event has been moved to September to coincide with school holidays and as such, there has

been an extra focus on making it an especially family-friendly event.

On top of incredible curries, delicious treats and incredible creations from right across the region, there was fun and activities for every member of the family.

“We’re focused on the whole family and each and every person having a great experience at Curryfest together,” event manager Tegan Ewart said.

“We have a whole Kid’s Zone dedicated to ensuring there are plenty of fun things to do for the younger - and not so young - members of the family. There will be rides, fun activities, jumping castles, some treats and face painting just to name a few.”

There are two stages jam-packed with live entertainment all day and more than 170 stalls. This year event organisers introduced the ‘signature dish’ for each curry stallholder - which meant there was even more range of delicious multi-cultural curries available.

On Curryfest eve, families were invited to Woolgoolga Beach Reserve where they enjoyed an outdoor screening of Bride and Prejudice.

The festival also coincides this year with Woolgoolga’s renowned Lillipilli Art Exhibition, celebrating regional artists in a number of formats.

MORE than 200 people came together at The Spit on the afternoon of September 13th for a vigil organised by White Ribbon Queensland Committee.

The gathering was organised in less than twenty fours of social media campaign.

Chiu-Hing Chan, chairperson of White Ribbon Queensland committee was very pleased with the response and appreciated the tremendous effort put in by the committee members, their partners and volunteers.

Lord Mayor calls for local hero nominations

Woolgoolga is home to the biggest Australian Punjabi Sikh population outside of capital cities. Woolgoolga’s population is only 5,000, but the town boasts two Sikh temples and hundreds of citizens for whom Punjabi is their first language.

LORD Mayor Graham Quirk is calling on the local Brisbane community to nominate worthy individuals and community groups for the 2016 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards.

Cr Quirk said the annual awards celebrate Brisbane’s local unsung heroes and recognise the significant work they do to help others.

“As Lord Mayor, I am privileged to meet many residents who make an extraordinary contribution to their local communities,” Cr Quirk said.

“At any given time there are thousands of residents working to make Brisbane an even better place to live for us all, whether it’s improving our natural environment, helping others less fortunate or working with children, the elderly or people with disabilities.

“These awards are about making sure that these kinds of selfless people are appropriately recognised for the efforts and achievements that make our city a better place to be.”

Cr Quirk said there were 10 award categories for the 2016 Awards.

“Men need to stand up and say this is not how we treat women,” he said.

“We need to make sure we honour our women.

“This evening is about the community coming together and showing that we are not going to be defined by the-actions of these people.

“We pay tribute to the victims tonight and make a pledge to work on awareness when it comes to domestic-violence.”

Acting chief superintendent Michelle Stenner, a victim of domestic violence herself, said it was the number one priority of police to prevent any more deaths as a result of DV. “Queensland Police do not accept it in any form and we are committed to ensuring the safety of domestic violence victims,” Supt Stenner said.

“I grew up in a DV household and know first-hand the suffering and hardship it puts on its victims, which is what inspired me to be a police woman in the first place.

“We are here not just to pay our respects to recent victims, but to raise awareness to prevent any more.”

Fiona Staples, 44, of Burleigh, was touched by the recent stories of domestic violence after growing up in a -violent environment.

“I’ve never been a victim, but my mother

was and seeing the tragic events this week broke my heart,” she said.

“I thought it was only right I pop down here and take a moment to honour them.”

Brisbane celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi with great zest this year with many celebrations taking place in Brisbane, maybe one day we will start seeing the “Pandals”, but it is very good to see the number of functions being organised. Shri Laxmi Narayan Mandir held Maha Abhishekham, pooja and aarathi on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th, with the Visarjan on Sunday 20th September. Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir held a special Ganesh Pooja on 7th September. Hindu Society of Queensland celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi on Friday 29th August. Baps Swami Narayan temple also celebrated Ganesh Chaturhi with the Visharjan on 27th September.

According to the Hindu mythology and religious beliefs Lord Ganesha symbolises good luck and wisdom. This is why he is worshipped first before starting any good work.

On the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, people bring the idols of Lord Ganesha home to take the blessings in the form of good luck, intelligence, prosperity and good health. They perform the pooja, observe fast and say thanks by paying homage and celebrating Lord Ganesha coming to their place. People eagerly wait for this occasion the whole year so that

they can be present at the service of Lord Ganesha and apologise for the mistakes which they have committed. They also make promises to follow the path of honesty and kindness and to serve the mankind. There are various legends related to the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi and people have great belief on these religious stories. Read to know more about the legends of Ganesh Chaturthi.

One day when Goddess Parvati was taking bath she made a boy from the dough she used for her bath and put life into it. This is how Ganesha was born and she told him to stand on the main doorway of the house. Then, there came Lord Shiva and while going in the house he was stopped on the gate by Ganesha on orders of her mother.

Lord Shiva became very angry and cut off Ganesha's head with his trident. When Goddess Parvati came out and saw all this, she, in her anger, asked Lord Shiva to make her son alive or to see her destroying the world. Lord Shiva then went to the earth with Lord Vishnu and took the head of the very first living being to fix it on the body of Ganesha. It was the head of an elephant. After this, Lord Shiva apologised and declared that Lord Ganesha will be worshipped before all the gods and goddesses.

Ganeshotsav or Ganesh-Utsav, which begins on Ganesha Chaturthi, culminates on Anant Chaturdashi.

Hence

Ganeshotsav is celebrated for 10 days in the month of Bhadrapada. The last day of festivity is known as Ganesha Visarjan.

Ganesha Visarjan is also known as Vinayaka Nimajjanam in Telugu speaking regions.

On the eleventh day the statue of Lord Ganesha is immersed into water body, preferably in a river, lake or the sea. After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and sweets, the statues of Lord Ganesha are taken to the water body through the street procession with much fanfare. Thousands of devotees join the procession and fill the whole atmosphere with chanting of Lord Ganesha. "Ganapati Bappa Morya" and "Ganesh Maharaj Ki, Jai" are few of the famous slogans which are chanted throughout the procession.

In Mumbai, Ganesha Visarjan is performed under the guidance of Ganpati Mandals. The street procession is accompanied with Dhol, Tasha and the other traditional instruments. Ganesha Visarjan continues throughout the night till the next morning.

Few families perform Ganesha Visarjan on the 3rd, 5th or 7th day rather performing it on the 11th day as per their family tradition. The idol of Lord Ganesha can be immersed in the water of tub or bucket.

Exciting additions enhance spring time entertainment at South Bank BRISBANE’S much-loved South Bank Parklands has undergone exciting change, with a weekly live music program and brand new playground now on offer for the community to enjoy.

Environment, Parks and Sustainability Chairman Councillor Matthew Bourke officially opened the new $1.7 million Riverside Green playground on 3 October, and said the upgraded space would provide a fantastic play space for the community and further enhance South Bank’s reputation as one of the city’s most-loved recreational spaces.

“The new playground is a state-of-the-art facility catering to all ages and abilities with interactive play features including a towering pink skywalk and a climbable pirate ship for toddlers,” he said.

“The existing landscape was also refreshed as part of the upgrade, with new plants and trees enhancing the green space along with improved lighting in the area.”

The playground’s construction began in April this year and was made possible through $1.7 million funding from the Queensland Government.

Cr Bourke said in addition to the new playground, Australia’s largest free live music program, City Sounds, is now on every Saturday at South Bank following the program’s success earlier this year.

“City Sounds is a Brisbane City Councilfunded program which provides free entertainment at nine popular locations across the city,” he said.

“The program was trialled at nine South Bank locations earlier this year and following positive feedback from the community, City Sounds has become a permanent part of South Bank Parkland’s Saturday events calendar.

“This provides residents and visitors with more vibrant and engaging events across our city while supporting our local musicians.

“Local musicians Fresco, Avaberee and Miss Elm are among the key performers taking centre stage this month, and I encourage everyone to head to South Bank and experience the vibrancy of our local music scene.”

Wynnum Womens Club’s Lok Geet Sammelan WYNNUM Women’s Club presented what they claim to be the first Lokgeet Sammelan in Queensland on September 12.

The program was very well organised and attended despite a number of functions in Brisbane on the night. Various Mandalis took part in the Sammelan. Participants and supporters were all presented with certificates of appreciation. The driving force behind the Sammelan Parmila Kumar thanked everyone for the efforts. Mrs Prabha Mishra a well known entity within the Fiji Indian community was the MC for the night. She has been the host of a popular women’s radio program in Fiji.

Anukar Mishra, president of Sanatan Dharm Association of Queensland was one of the speakers on the night. Mr Sadhu Prasad spoke on behalf of the trophy sponsors Veal and Prasad, while Sangeet Chand represented his son Saneil Chand of Terry White Pharmacy. Below is a short history of Lokgeet in Fiji.

In the Fiji Islands of the South Pacific there is a large population of sub continentals who must almost certainly qualify for the title of ‘Farthest Flung’ Indians in the world.

The first bunch of Indians arrived in Fiji in

1879 on a ship sailing from the French Reunion Islands where the Indians had served for some time as indentured laborers. English cane planters had approached the government of India since the early 1870s for permission to import coolies but had been informed this would not be possible unless and until Fiji became a British

colony. As soon as this imperial event took place, Indians from all up and down the eastern coast of India began being recruited as girmityas (indentured workers). Calcutta, Madras and even Karachi and Bombay became embarkation ports for Indians of many castes and faiths, headed for a new life across the ‘black waters’.

Life in Fiji was not happy. It was hell, in fact. Conditions were extremely tough and wages just above subsistence. Suicide rates were high. When the indenture period was complete, the British gave the Indians the right to return home on the condition they paid their own passage. Most were unable to put the fare together and so never returned. Others took the opportunity to set up small businesses or work their own plots. Some married with indigenous islanders. Between 1879 and 1916 over

60,000 Indians were transported to the islands and today they number nearly 400,000 or nearly 40% of Fiji’s population.

Though the Indian community comes from many parts of India, few have retained fluency in their original tongues. While most Indians speak English the community’s unifying language is Fiji-Hindi. Most IndoFijians have never been to the land of their father’s.

Indo-Fijian culture in certain respects seem to be frozen in time. Fiji-Hindi and the way in which it is spoken, is a rather simplified version of the language you hear in India.

The accents and rhythms of Bhojpuri speakers from Eastern UP or Garhwali speakers from the northern hills of India as they try to speak shudh (pure) Hindi. And considering that a significant percentage of Indo-Fijians originated in non-Hindi speaking parts of India this is not surprising.

And the music they share, some lokgeet (folk songs) and Tambura Bhajans, has a rawness that seems to be completely unaware of the development of modern ways of singing and playing. It is not at all difficult to imagine these songs, sung with great gusto, being sung exactly the same way in the mid-19th century.

4th National Hindu Conference strengthens bond among Hindus in Australia HOTA Forum launched during the 4th Australian National Hindu Conference

GCHCA Hindu Cultural Precinct prelimanary work kicks off GOLD Coast Hindu Cultural Association happily announces that the preliminary work for the Hindu Educational and Cultural precinct has started on 27th September with prayers.

Following the momentous advances in the past few weeks, the council gave the green light to commence preliminary work on the land. The first phase involved clearing of the paths, to do the soil test and to bring in equipment. On Sunday, September 27th, 2015 at 8:00am, one of our founder member and senior citizen, Mr Subramanian Barataraj inaugurated the event by performing the prayers and pooja. With just a simple message via the community email group and Facebook, there was an overwhelming response from the Hindu community in Gold Coast and Brisbane. Both adults and children came forward to do the initial clearing on a voluntary basis. Special thanks goes to the tree loppers from Brisbane who kindly agreed to spend their resting weekend to do this community work. This included clearing shrubs and trees, and creating a service pathway inside the land to enable soil-testing rigs to enter the borehole locations in the coming weeks.

With this initial work, it is expected that the building approval from the Gold Coast City Council would be obtained soon, allowing the first phase of building works to commence early next year. There is an Indian adage which states, “Do not reside in a place which is void of a temple.” In accordance with this advice from our forefathers, the Gold Coast Hindu community has drawn together in faith to develop a ‘Hindu Cultural and Education Centre’, which will include a place of worship for all Hindus who call Gold Coast, Brisbane and Northern NSW their home.

In its endeavours to erect the cultural and educational precinct, the Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association (GCHCA) has experienced moderate success to date. With divine providence, GCHCA has been generously

offered prime land by the Gold Coast City Council to establish a ‘Gold Coast Hindu Education and Cultural Precinct’. All monetary contributions of $2 or more to the GCHCA Building Fund will be eligible for a tax deduction. The association has already raised over $500,000 and continues to be bestowed with donations. However, the association is still far from achieving its target and the GCHCA needs your urgent support to fulfil its noble objectives with minimal impediments.

We, therefore humbly appeal for your support. Any contribution would make a difference and every cent counts towards helping our community realize its dream. While we empathise that not everyone would be in a position to make substantial cash contributions, we urge you to spread the good word and encourage your friends and relatives to support our united mission. VISHVA Hindu Parishad of Australia organised the 4th Australian National Hindu Conference with the theme Organizing Community Strengthening Australia. This conference was hosted by its Victoria chapter on September 26, 2015 at Bayview Eden Hotel, Melbourne, Victoria.

Ms Judith Graley, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and Member of Parliament from Narre Warren South, representing the Premier of Victoria, inaugurated the conference. This was followed by Buddhist and Vedic peace prayers.

Shri Subramanian Ramamoorthi, National President of VHP Australia, gave the welcome address. He shared the work done by the organisation for the benefit of Australian community. Dr Anil Kumar Asthana, Vice President VHP Australia (Victoria chapter), gave statistics of Hindu community and their contributions to Australia in terms of economy, education and professional contribution compared to other communities and Australian national average. The data showed that Hindu population is the fastest growing community in Australia (86% growth between 2006 and 2011). Hindu population had higher educational qualifications and represented in high profile professions.

Smt Geeta Devi, President VHP Australia (Victoria chapter), gave the keynote address on "Vision for Australian Hindu Society".

She said Hindus from many countries are moving and settling in Australia in reasonably large numbers. They are a contributing community and have contributed immensely in the field of economy, science, technology, health, administration, education and culture".

She added that it is time that Hindus in Australia need to Position Hindu Society so that can live with dignity and respect; Shape Hindu Identity so that we proudly use Hindu Australian as our common identity; Strengthen Hindu Society through our rich cultural heritage that need to practised, preserved and propagated it for the benefit of our community; and Organising Hindu Society by increasing our collaborative strength with many linguistic, social and cultural organisations and associations, and temples etc for the benefit of our community. She even mentioned that Hon Kevin Rudd, ex Prime Minister of Australia had once written to the organisation that he was proud of the achievements of Hindu Australians.

The first plenary session was on Working with Government Agencies. This was chaired by Shri Chidambaram Srinivasan, Commissioner, Victorian Multicultural Commission. The panel members included Ms Kriss Mckie, Manager of Social Development, City of Wyndham; Mr Anthony Silva, Superintendent of Victoria Police; and Shri Vasan Srinivasan, Member Australian Multicultural Commission.

The second plenary session was on Collaboration among Hindu Organizations, Temples and Associations (HOTA). This session was chaired by Swami Vigyananand, International Coordinator and Joint General Secretary of VHP Bharat. Ms Pritika Sharma, Joint General Secretary of VHP New Zealand, spoke about the success of organizing Hindu community through HOTA in New Zealand.

Following his excellent discussion, 25 organisations became member organisations of HOTA, and over 20 people became volunteers of HOTA. Officially HOTA Victoria was launched by Swami Vigyananand and it was welcomed by all participants in the conference. Shri Nagabhushan Sharma Betanabhatla volunteered to shoulder the responsibility of the secretary of HOTA forum for Victoria.

The third plenary session was on Hindu Organization and Association: Serving the Society. This session was chaired by Professor Guna Magesan, Vice Chancellor, University and Institute of Advanced Research, Gujarat.

Twelve Hindu organizations such as Sankat Mochan Samiti Inc., Amma Ashram, Hindu Society of Victoria, IndianCare, Arya Prathinidhi Sabha and Arya Samaj of Melbourne, Brahma Kumaris Australia, ISKCON Melbourne, JET Australia Foundation, Wyndham Diwali Inc, Kerala Hindu Society of Melbourne, VHP Australia and Sewa Australia.

The fourth plenary session was on Bridging the gap among the Hindus coming from different countries. This session was chaired by Dr Jayant Bapat OAM. The panel members include Yogacharya Devidasan, Vedic Friends Association; Shri Perambalam Senthooran of Melbourne Vinayagar Hindu Sangam; Shri Raju Adhekari, Nepalese Association of Victoria; Shri Rama Prasad Vemula, Chairman of Hindu Society of Victoria Cultural & Heritage Centre Trust.

This conference provided a platform for various community groups and volunteers to come together and feel the sense of bonding, sharing, sustaining, networking, collaborating, and organizing in the spirit of strengthening Australia. Nearly 200 delegates representing more than 50 temples, organizations, associations of Hindu society were present in the first conference of this kind in Melbourne. Cr Gautham Gupta and Cr Chandra Bamunusinghe were among other guests and community leaders who took part in the conference.

All delegates felt that there is an urgent need to work together, collaborate and cooperate, share resources to address the challenges in an united and organised manner and contribute to the welfare of Australian society. Also to showcase the rich cultural heritage, Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan was decided to be organise annually. It was well summarised by Smt Akila Ramarathinam who presented the way forward based on discussions and deliberations. Smt Krishna Betanabhatla gave the vote of thanks, thanking all volunteers, organisers, organisations, sponsors and representatives.

Diwali Meaning & Significance

DEEPAVALI is a festival where people from all age groups participate. They give expression to their happiness by lighting earthen 'diyas' (lamps), decorating the houses, bursting firecrackers and inviting near and dear ones to their households for partaking in a sumptuous feast. The lighting of lamps is a way of paying obeisance to god for attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace, valour and fame.

It is one time in the whole year that children volunteer to leave their beds long before the day begins. In fact, the traditional oil bath at 3am, is the only chore that stands between them and the pre-dawn adventures. They emerge, scrubbed clean to get into their festive attire, and light up little oil lamps, candles and scented sticks (agarbathis), the wherewithal for setting alight crackers and sparklers.

On Diwali night, little clay lamps are lit in Hindus homes, but now a days coloured electric lamps are also used. What is the

significance of lighting a lamp? There is a logical answer to this question. It is through the light that the beauty of this world is revealed or experienced. Most civilizations of the world recognize the importance of light as a gift of God. It has always been a symbol of whatever is positive in our world of experience.

To Hindus, darkness represents ignorance, and light is a metaphor for knowledge.

Therefore, lighting a lamp symbolizes the destruction, through knowledge, of all negative forces- wickedness, violence, lust, anger, envy, greed, bigotry, fear, injustice, oppression and suffering, etc. Competition is stiff, and even the little girl in silk frocks and their finery are watching out for the best sparklers and flowerpots, the rockets and Vishnuchakras, which light-up the night sky like a thousand stars. Grown-ups are the soul of generosity. Festive bonhomie abounds.

Tradition of Playing Cards REFLECTING tradition wrapped in modernity, playing cards is extremely popular on Diwali day. It is said that on playing cards, the goddess of wealth smile upon the player and ensures her goodwill. The tradition of gambling on Diwali also has a legend behind it. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year.

Saguna and Nirguna Brahma HINDU religious scholars, saints and sages commonly use terms Saguna and Nirguna Brahma to expound attributes of the Parabrahma, the Supreme Personality of Godhead as well as of Devatas. Saguna means ‘with attributes’ whilst Nirguna means ‘without attributes’.

The term Brahma is used in this instance for both the Parabrahma or Bhagawan and Devatas.

Saguna Brahma implies that the divine personalities have characteristics such as form and qualities appropriate to their importance. When a person believes in the Saguna Brahma he understands that the divine personality can be represented through objects such as statues, pictures or symbols. These objects represent not only the physical form but also intrinsic attributes.

Saguna Brahma is the most common concept, which physically demonstrates the divine personality. Idols, temples, specific directions, rituals, symbols and pictures of divine personalities are all different aspects of the Saguna Brahma. It is believed that objects representing devine personalities help concentrate devotees mind on divine glory.

In general Hindus worship Saguna Brahma. All Hindu Devatas and Bhagawan in different Avatars have specific forms and have qualities fitting their position.

Scriptures describe their feats demonstrating their super human capability.

Hindu temples and places of worship are examples of Saguna Brahma. They have statues, idols or pictures symbolising divine personalities. Those statues or pictures exhibit specific form and attributes of a particular Bhagawan or Devata.

The Nirguna Brahma means that the Parabrahma is omnipotent, omnipresent; truth, timeless and great. According to this concept the divine personalities are so great and incomprehensible that they cannot be represented in a form of idols, statues or pictures or be limited to specific characteristics.

The concept of worshipping the devine personalities in both Saguna and Nirguna Brahma modes has flourished in Hinduism since beginning, although there have been times when a particular concept dominated the other. Spiritually they compliment each other. Most Hindu Scriptures have synthesised both concepts of Saguna and Nirguna Brahma to offer a complete spiritual experience.

Vedas and Upanishads exalt both forms of

understanding of the Parabrahma. Many Mantras (for example Svetasvataropnishad 6.11) honour the Parabrahma in the Nirguna Brahma mode. Other Mantras used to perform religious rituals extol the Parabrahma as Saguna Brahma with forms and physical attributes.

The Ramayana in general describes Lord Rama in a human form as Saguna Brahma, but the same Scripture at places describes Him as Nirguna Brahma (Ramcharit Manas, Lanka Kand Doha 14-15).

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna is represented as Saguna Brahma but the incomprehensible Vishvarupadarshana form of Krishna encompassing everything closely implies that He is in the Nirguna Brahma mode (BG Chapter 11).

Adoration of divine personalities in the Saguna Brahma form has significantly contributed to development of culture, art, literature, music, dance and architecture, etc.

Poets and writers have written and continue to write books glorifying divine attributes.

Puranas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and other scriptures mostly describe the Saguna Brahma form of divinity. Paintings and sculptures on divine themes can be seen in art galleries, residences and markets.

Temples with elaborate carving and attractive idols demonstrate the characteristics of Saguna Brahma.

To get along well with your partner, you must accept, expect and respect these differences. You must always remember that most problems are solvable.

In married life, if both partners have strong expectations, attitudes, values, perceptions and behaviours, then the marriage will be shaky. You must accept that there are gender differences. They are real and permanent.

If you are prepared to accept the differences between men and women, then you can enrich your relationship. Many findings are generalisations that apply to most men or women, but not to all men and all women. There are always exceptions.

The following facts and figures that apply to Britain are also applicable to most developed countries, but the figures may vary from one country to another.

Men, on average, live for six years less than women. Over 90 per cent of convicted acts of violence are carried out by men.70 per cent of the victims will be men.

At school, around 90 per cent of children with behaviour problems are boys. Over 80 per cent of children with learning problems are also boys.

Men comprise over 90 per cent of the prison population. Approximately threequarters of the unemployed are men. A leading cause of death among males between 12 and 60 years of age is selfinflicted death. Men and boys commit suicide four times more frequently than women.

IF University of Iowa researchers have their way, and hopefully so, our offices promise to look radically different soon. Because, they suggest that replacing sitting desks with sitstand desks in offices could offer a cost-effective and sustainable approach to reducing sedentary behaviour and fighting obesity.

In this study, employees with sitstand desks stood 60 minutes or more a day at work compared to their coworkers with sitting desks, and they continued to do so long after their newfangled desks lost their novelty.

Plus, the sit-stand desk users walked an additional six minutes a day at work.

Consequently, the employees with sit-stand desks burned up to 87 more calories a day than their sitting counterparts -- a small but significant amount that researchers say could be important in fighting obesity.

“Our findings are important because they support redesigning the traditionally sedentary office environment as a potentially cost-effective approach for fighting the obesity epidemic,” said corresponding author Lucas Carr, assistant professor at University of Iowa in the US. The cross-sectional study looked at employee activity over a five-day workweek. Participants had their sit-stand desks for an average of 1.8 years prior to the study.

“This study is unique in that we looked at long-term users of these desks whereas previous studies have examined employee’s sitting/standing habits immediately after being provided a new sit-stand desk, which is not a true test of whether someone will

use the desk over the course of their 20- to 30-year career,” Carr said.

The study involved 69 middle-aged, mostly female employees -- 31 using sit-stand desks and 38 using sitting desks--in a variety of office jobs including administrative/clerical, statistical/testing, management, marketing, research, and accounting.

The researchers found that those employees with sit-stand desks stood an hour more a day at work that those with sitting desks.

“Office workers sit more than 80 percent of the workday, placing them at increased risk for many sedentary-related pathologies,” the study said.

However, sit-stand desks could change that by offering “a sustainable approach for reducing sedentary behaviour” for office workers whose inactivity puts them at risk for such conditions as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and obesity, the researchers said.

The study was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Here are some ways to get rid of hyperpigmentation.

6. Lemon:- Aloe Vera:-Aloe vera works excellently on hyperpigmented skin due to the presence of mucilaginous polysaccharides in the gel. It can remove the dead skin cells and promote regeneration of new skin cells.

Before going to bed, apply some fresh aloe vera gel on the hyperpigmented skin and leave it on overnight. Rinse it off in the morning. Follow this remedy daily for a few weeks to get positive results. Combine two tablespoons of aloe vera gel and onehalf tablespoon of raw honey. Mix well and allow it to settle for 10 minutes. Now apply the mixture to the pigmentation and let it dry naturally. After 20 minutes, wash it off with lukewarm water.

Follow this remedy once daily for at least two weeks and every other day thereafter until you get the desired results.

7. Orange peel:- Next time you eat an orange, keep the peel. It contains citric acid that has bleaching properties and can help get rid of dark patches on skin.

Add one teaspoon each of lemon juice, milk and honey to one tablespoon of dried orange peel powder. Mix all the ingredients well to get a smooth consistency.

Apply the paste on the affected skin. Leave it on for about 20 minutes, and then massage gently. Finally wash it off with lukewarm water. Follow this treatment at least three or four times a week to encourage cell renewal and reduce dark skin patches.

8. Avocados:- Enriched with fatty acids, vitamin C and oleic acid, avocados can effectively help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Plus, the various enzymes and high amount of vitamin E in avocados can also reduce pigmentation.

Mash one ripe avocado into a smooth paste.

Apply the paste on the affected area.

Leave it on for half an hour, and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Follow this remedy twice daily for at least one month to get positive results. Alternatively, mash half of a ripe avocado into a smooth paste and mix in two teaspoons of honey and one teaspoon of milk. Apply the paste on the affected area. Allow it to dry on its own and

the rinse it off with lukewarm water. Do this once daily for a month.

9. Sandalwood:- Sandalwood is known to enhance skin complexion and it also works effectively for hyperpigmentation or other types of skin blemishes. It is a stimulant, cooling agent and blood purifier. All these properties work together to reduce the appearance of dark patches and give your skin a natural, youthful tone. Mix two tablespoons of sandalwood powder with enough rose water to form a thick paste. Apply this mask over the affected skin area. Leave it on for half an hour, and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Follow this remedy twice daily for a few weeks to get positive results.

Alternatively, make a paste using two tablespoons of sandalwood powder, one tablespoon of turmeric powder and three to four tablespoons of milk. Apply it as a mask on the affected skin. Allow it to dry on its own and then rinse it off with lukewarm water. Follow this remedy on a daily basis to reduce discoloration.

10. Almonds:- Being a rich source of vitamin E, almonds are good for skin and especially hyperpigmented skin. Soak five almonds in milk overnight. Next day, remove the almonds from the milk and grind them, adding milk to get a fine paste.

Add one teaspoon of honey and few drops of lemon juice to the paste and mix well.

Spread the paste over the affected skin before going to sleep. Wash it off in the morning with cold water. Follow this remedy every night for two weeks, and then do it twice weekly. You can also eat almonds on a regular basis to minimize hyperpigmentation.

Along with these remedies, there are many preventive measures that you need to bear in mind. For instance, to prevent hyperpigmentation, avoid excessive sun exposure and if required to go in the sun then apply a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Also, reapply the sunscreen every three hours.

Plus, to enjoy healthy skin you must follow a proper skin care routine – cleansing, toning, moisturizing and exfoliating.

WHEN Nina Behn received her cancer diagnosis in January, she was forced to put her life on hold.

The 34-year-old had planned to move down south and start a new job when she received what she describes as the biggest shock of her life.

“It ruined all of my plans and I had to stop working because I lost so much weight, was in so much pain and had no energy,” she said.

“My family are all in Germany and most of my friends were down south shortly after I’d finished my treatment, I felt completely alone. It was the scariest time in my life.”

Nina underwent around three months of intensive radiation and chemotherapy which left her physically and emotionally fragile.

“I started to get panic attacks, something I had never experienced before. I didn’t know what was happening to me.”

It was then Nina reached out to Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service psychologist Kerry Francis, who works in the Cancer Care Centre.

“I told her what was happening to me, how I was feeling and she was there to listen and give advice,” Nina said.

“Then she told me about the new Relaxation and Wellbeing Group for cancer patients she had established and I knew I had to give it a try, I had been looking for something exactly like it but had found it just didn’t exist in Cairns.”

Dr Francis said she had established the group after identifying a gap in services.

“There is increasing evidence for the bene-

fits of mind-body therapies like relaxation, visualisation, meditation, yoga and art/music therapies as an effective part of integrated cancer care,” she said.

“I wanted to give our patients an opportunity to learn practical stress management skills in an informal, group setting.”

“Cancer has its own, unique set of stresses and for the person experiencing it. It can be absolutely terrifying. It can take away your sense of control and it brings you face to face with your own mortality.”

“There is only a certain level of resilience we have as human beings and it is so important our patients are equipped with some practical tools to deal with the psychological as well as the physical stresses.”

Dr Francis said cancer patients and their carers had reported multiple benefits from attending the class.

“Since we started in February the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The group has helped to improve people’s skills and sense of control, and through improving attendees’ self-management skills, we hope it will reduce the burden on the health care system,” she said.

Nina credits the program with easing her stress and giving her something to look forward to.

“I look forward to every Friday, it is my own special treat for myself,” she said.

“I am now equipped with the tools I need to make myself relax, I have met other people and it has opened up a world of other opportunities for me.

“Since I started the class my panic attacks have gone, I can tell you it really works.”

Real Estate News Brisbane fast becoming hot spot for property investors SOUTHERN investors are looking north to the Queensland property market as Sydney and Melbourne markets become too expensive to gain a foothold.

While the latest BIS Shrapnel report warning Sydney and Melbourne house prices will start to fall in 2016-2017 as interest rates start to rise, Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, are emerging as the more attractive destination for investors.

Despite a flat jobs market in south-east Queensland as the mining boom comes off the boil, Brisbane’s median house price of $475,000 is looking a lot more affordable than Sydney ($785,000) and Melbourne ($527,000).

It might be a while off from repeating the hordes of Victorians who fled north during

the mid-to-late 1990s, but there is definitely an uptick in interest from investors as Australians focus on the Sydney property “bubble” and when it will burst.

Gold Coast real estate agent John Newlands said he had been inundated with calls from southern investors in the past few months looking to buy north of the Tweed.

“In the old days they used to come up with their suitcases and buy a similar house and have a bag load of money left over,” Mr Newlands said.

“There is still a bit of that because Brisbane house prices haven’t caught up [to Sydney and Melbourne] – but we are starting to see more investors come back from interstate, especially in the unit market.

Protecting your property from bushfires BUSHFIRES are a serious risk in many parts of Australia, particularly in the warmer months. And as the devastation caused to lives and property in previous seasons shows, even the suburbs of our biggest cities are not immune.

If you live near the Aussie bush, it’s vital you prepare for the possibility of bushfire.

Here’s some tips to help you put your own strategy in place.

Prepare a bushfire survival plan It doesn’t matter whether you’re in the country, city or suburbs – if your home is in an area even remotely at risk of bushfire you need to have a bushfire survival plan.

Generally speaking, this should apply to: • Any house in an area with a history of bushfires; • Houses within a few blocks of bushland;

• Properties not at direct risk but that are situated near a wilderness corridor, and • If you’d need to travel through bushland in order to escape.

Regarding the fourth point, if you are located somewhere remote or where there’s only a few major roads in and out of your town or property, it’s wise to think about what route/s you’d take to escape a crisis. Remember, in the event of an emergency familiar roads may be blocked, have traffic jams or detours.

As the fire service says: planning to make a plan is not a plan.

It’s best to check your bushfire survival plan and update it annually. Make sure all the family, tenants and any long-term guests know what to do if fire approaches.

THEJAN Elankayer of Pacific Pines, Gold Coast, has become the first student in Queensland to have Indian music exam results credited towards his Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). The Indian Music and Dance examinations held

by Pandit Ram Sahai Sangit Vidyalaya (PRSSV) were officially recognised by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) earlier this year.

Thejan achieved a Distinction in Grade 6 Tabla in the exams held in July.

Asked about tabla and PRSSV exams, Thejan said “Tabla has been a source of pleasure for me more than half my life for a number of reasons. For example, when I am distressed, I often play Tabla as it seems to have an uplifting effect.

The PRSSV Tabla exams work effectively in providing a source of perspective and accomplishment.

The vast pool of knowledge that is entwined within Tabla is practically boundless. When comparing what I have learnt to that pool, I often feel that what I’ve learnt is insignificant and can sometimes go so far as to be discouraged.

The PRSSV Tabla exams are a great help in that area as each year I am constantly working towards the next grade. Upon finishing each exam, not only is there a sense of accomplishment bestowed within me, I also begin to feel that I am one step closer to that vast pool of knowledge.”

“I have 3 goals for my near future in Tabla, the first is of course complete the grade 8 (year 12 equivalent) PRSSV exam. My second goal would be to be awarded the Rising Star Award and perform at Sangeet Mela.

My final near future goal would be to travel to India for a bit and absorb some of the culture and music straight from the roots. In

regards to the long term for Tabla I would like to take as many opportunities as I can to further expand and enhance my relatively trivial amount of knowledge on the subject. The next round of PRSSV Tabla Examinations are planned for late January 2016. As well as tabla, the recognised courses include Bansuri, Carnatic Vocal, Dhol, Harmonium, Hindustani Vocal, Kathak Dance, and Sitar. The “Once Again” Concert Review

USTAD Ghulam Khan presented his 21year old son Ghulam Hassan Khan at concerts in Gold Coast and Brisbane in September last month.

Both the concerts were of a very high calibre. The audience who had the good fortune to listen to the artists were mesmerised at the very high standard of presentation of ghazals and classical items. Although Ghulam Abbas had performed at various concerts in Australia on many various occasions, the surprise packet was his 21-year old son, Ghulam Hassan.

Ghulam Hassan has trained under his Grand-father, the renowned Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan of the Rampur Seswan Gharana (Schoof of Music) and is the

eighth generation of singers to come from this famous musical family. Ghulam Hassan is without doubt the most promising upcoming classical artist in India at the current time. His ability to perform classical ragas and thumris in its purest forms, with lightening-like taans and sargam syllabus, added a great charm to his performance and the audience kept asking for more, something rare at our concerts.

Ustad Ghulam Abbas presented some of his newer compositions and as well as many requests from his earlier CDs.

Both the artists were very ably accompanied on tabla by Brisbane’s own Dheeraj Shrestha. The three of them were simply superb at all the concerts and kept the audience in raptures.

India’s last few Oscar entries were embarrassing: Irrfan Khan

ANNOUNCEMENT of India’s official entry to Oscars are often followed by debates over the better films missing it. Be it the Gujarati film The Good Road (2013) or Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Barfi (2012), their credibility is mostly questioned. This year, however, the nomination of Chaitanya Tamhane’s debut Court went undisputed. Now, Irrfan Khan has said that India’s last few entries sent to the Oscars were “embarrassing” and added that Court is better than them.

“Court is a good film. I don’t know about the other films. Unlike a few years back, the kind of films that were sent, they were embarrassing.

Premiership pride A DECADE after experiencing grand final heartbreak, the North Queensland Cowboys can lay claim to being National Rugby League champions with an astounding 1716 victory over the Brisbane Broncos at ANZ Stadium on Sunday October 4.

A Kyle Feldt try on the buzzer after some insane scrambling play from the Cowboys tied the game at 16-all after the Broncos maintain a 16-12 advantage for almost the entire second half.

Then four-time Dally M winner hit the post in a sideline conversion attempt well after the hooter send the game into golden point extra time.

A Broncos error on the extra time restart gave Cowboys the ball in ideal field position and Johnathan Thurston coolly slotted the winning field goal to create history.

Despite some willing early defence, the Cowboys again found themselves on the wrong end of scoreboard early when the Broncos turned an early 2-0 lead - off the back of a 40m Corey Parker penalty – into an 8-0 advantage when Broncos winger Corey Oates scored on the second play after the restart.

Buried deep in their own territory after a sublime Kyle Feldt restart, the Broncos ran in a superb 90m try when an

Adam Blair offload unlocked the Cowboys’ right defensive edge, with Anthony Milford, Jack reed and finally Oates finding space to post the opening try in the 6th minute.

Parker converted and an 8-0 Brisbane lead saw the Cowboys in familiar territory, trailing early.

But that handy advantage was wiped out almost immediately as the Cowboys put on a brilliant scrum play following a Broncos error form the restart.

Jake Granville picked up the ball from the lock position and darted through a half-gap before finding a flying Justin O’Neill, who was close enough to power his way over.

Thurston converted and the Cowboys trailled 8-6.

The North Queensland weren’t yet done in the opening half though, as Granville again laid on a try, this time for prop James Tamou, who swivelled and dived over for a close-range four-pointer. Thurston added the extras and the Cowboys led 12-8.

The Cowboys’ Round 1 finals conquerors, though, would have the last laugh in the opening stanza as Jack Reed was on the end of a movement that started off a Johnathan Thurston error. 12-12 was soon 14-12 to the Broncos as Parker converted and the side enjoyed a slim halftime lead.

The second half also started with a penalty against the

Cowboys, as Jordan Kahu took up where Parker left off, to pilot over the goal for a 16-12 Broncos lead.

The Cowboys had repeated scoring opportunities snuffed out by desperate Broncos defence, while late errors also cruelled the North Queensland team. Kane Linnett dropped the ball over the line, while Lachlan Coote was called for a double movement.

Linnett would spill the ball in strong field position a second time, while Broncos centre Jack reed was a man possessed in defence and made several try-saving plays in the second half.

The scoreline was identical to the one Brisbane defeated North Queensland by in the week 1 qualifying final and cemented their status as one of the great modern-day teams.

Coach Wayne Bennett has not lost an NRL grand final, having won six with Brisbane and one with the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Understanding the sporting culture of Australia NRL experiences in the 2014 State of Origin Series and the Broncos-Cowboys Grand Final Match, October 2015

By Celine Goh Features Writer MUCH as this has been a defining moment for the Broncos young squad of 2015, it is also a defining moment for us as we have always wondered, way back in 1992, who all these people were, wearing specific jerseys, with club flags and esky coolers in hand, trudging to ANZ Stadium at Kessels Road on the south-side of Brisbane.

We were, at that time, newbies to Australia and Brisbane. We knew little of the sporting mania that grabbed hold of the city each weekend. Yet, the scene then and now were no different. Although the venue had shifted to Suncorp Stadium, the same passion, the same bright jersey colours, the same army trudged along the different roads leading to The Cauldron, the feared Suncorp

Stadium.

It was our defining moment as we tasted Aussie culture first hand in 1992. Now, after more than 2 decades living in Brisbane, we are participating fully in the sporting life of Australia too. Together with the throngs of passionate supporters of the Broncos or the Maroons, we marched to the gladiatorial grounds of The Cauldron.

Only this time, we now know who our heroes are and who they are breaking bones with!

With heightened anticipation, we bravely decided to walk the gauntlet of Caxton Street in 2014 for the State of Origin series and 3 nights ago, for the BroncosRoosters NRL Finals series.

Together with hyped up soldiers in war paint, striking gold and maroon jerseys or maroon jerseys, and oversized hats, we drank every drop of the beery atmosphere as boozed up comrades called out merry greetings and bowed, thinking that we were Japanese! Foot long sausages sizzled, teasing the senses with BBQ-ed meat, fragrant semi-burnt onions and the unique aroma of cheese on beef hamburgers. The sounds of happy chatter mingled with shouts of loud, boisterous laughter and squeals of delight from

the young ones as jokes were spilled as glasses brimmed over with the tongue-loosening golden liquid!

The buoyant mood in The Cauldron was much the same, pregame in 2014 and 2015. Excited predictions bounced off groups of buddies as the air of great anticipation notched up another level with the aerobic dance moves of the athletic, nubile cheer leaders, vibrant fireworks and the huge flame torches! At last, the teams emerge to discouraging boos for the opposition from the supremely loyal Queensland or Broncos crowds and to thunderous, ground shaking applause for the home team. www.indiantimes.com.au

As the Ref's whistle blew “Game On”, the first 10 to 20 minutes witnessed the sights and sounds of devastating bone crunching tackles that are not for the faint hearted. And yet, the crowd, as in gladiatorial contests in ancient Rome, bayed for more blood.

Only difference is that, as time went on, the crowd were stifled as they watched aghast as their heroes, the Mighty Maroons, withered in the first game of the 2014 Origin series and went on to lose the whole series, ending an unprecedented run of inter-state domination for 8 years against New South Wales! I believe that we were in total mourning right at the grounds, as our Mighty

Maroons were swallowed in The Cauldron by The Blues! A hush fell over the grounds and led the silent, grieving army out of the hallowed grounds of Rugby League.

Fast forward to last Friday when the Broncos trounced the hapless Roosters and the mood soared to the stratosphere! We joined the happy throng which burst into chants of “Go Broncos! Go, Go, Go Broncos!!” right up to the bus and railway stations! And, it will be this mood from the amazing loyal supporters in Brisbane that will hopefully, carry our Mighty Broncos to our 7th Premiership in Sydney on Sunday 4th Oct 2015.

Now, we fully dig what mateship and sportsmanship is all about in Australia!!

Postscript: Last night, on Sunday 4 Oct. 2015, we were gutted when the Broncos lost by a Golden Point when the Cowboys maestro, Jonathan Thurston, slotted in a field goal to claim a thrilling win after 21 years of Grand Final drought!! The final score was 17-16. We felt so good seeing the crowd staying after the game to salute and sincerely cheer the Cowboys for a well deserved win last night. We are super proud to be Queenslanders!
