Our beloved country, positioned graciously in the Southern Hemisphere as the world’s largest island continent, is by no stretch of the imagination immune from the numerous volatilities presently ravaging lives and countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Our island paradise is far away from Gaza in the Middle East—12,263 kilometers—and 12,975

kilometers from Ukraine, two hotspots of conflict for many months and years now. The human cost is staggering, with cosmic proportions and heart-wrenching data on casualties, ironically occurring in what was supposed to be a peaceful post-World War II era—the war thought to end all wars. As a peace-loving democracy and a willing signatory to numerous

international conventions fostering and protecting global peace and liberty, Australia unequivocally supports every country’s autonomy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Therefore, our national leaders, in bipartisan goodwill, acted swiftly in cooperation with many other democracies to hold Russia accountable for its alleged COntd. On pg 4

From the Publisher Navigating Change and Celebration in a Dynamic World

AS we approach the end of another eventful year, several significant developments shape our community’s landscape. From the upcoming American elections to the recent establishment of Queensland's new government and the celebration of Diwali, these topics resonate deeply with the Australian Indian community. Together, they highlight the interconnectedness of global events, local governance, and cultural traditions.

The upcoming elections in the United States are more than just a pivotal moment for American citizens; they carry profound implications for countries around the globe, including Australia. As one of our closest allies, the outcome will undoubtedly influence Australia’s foreign policy, trade relationships, and security framework. The political climate in the U.S. has a ripple effect, shaping the strategic decisions we make in response to global challenges.

As we observe the campaign rhetoric surrounding issues such as climate change, healthcare, and international relations, it is essential to recognize how these debates will affect Australian interests. For instance, a shift towards more progressive

climate policies in the U.S. could bolster international efforts to combat climate change, encouraging Australia to align its own strategies accordingly. Conversely, an isolationist stance could hinder collaborative efforts in trade and security, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, where Australia plays a critical role.

As members of the Australian Indian community, it is crucial to engage with these discussions, understanding that our voices matter in the broader context of democracy and global affairs. Encouraging dialogue about the implications of the U.S. elections among community members can foster awareness and inform our responses to any changes that may arise.

Closer to home, Queensland’s new government under Premier David Crisafulli is embarking on an ambitious agenda that addresses pressing issues, including youth crime, health, housing, and cost of living. This shift in leadership comes at a time when the state faces numerous challenges, and the policies implemented will have lasting effects on the lives of Queenslanders.

Crisafulli’s focus on economic recovery

and community safety is particularly relevant for our community. As the government drafts new legislation, including initiatives aimed at reducing youth crime, it is vital to advocate for measures that foster inclusivity and support for at-risk youth. The Australian Indian community has a rich tradition of valuing education and community service, and our involvement in local initiatives can help bridge gaps and provide constructive solutions.

Moreover, the government's commitment to improving health services is a welcome development. With the ongoing effects of the pandemic, access to quality healthcare remains a priority. As advocates for health and well-being, we should support efforts to ensure that all communities, including migrant populations, receive equitable access to healthcare resources.

Amidst the political landscape and evolving government policies, the celebration of Diwali serves as a powerful reminder of our cultural heritage and the values that unite us. This year, Diwali was celebrated with great enthusiasm on November 1, offering an opportunity for the Australian Indian community to come together in joy and reflection.

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is a time for family gatherings, festive meals, and the exchange of sweets and gifts. Celebrating Diwali in Australia allows us to share our rich traditions with the wider community, promoting understanding and appreciation of Indian culture.

BrIdgIng wOrLdS

In navigating the complexities of American politics, local governance, and cultural celebrations, the Australian Indian community stands at a unique crossroads. We are part of a global narrative that emphasizes the importance of participation, advocacy, and celebration. By engaging with the political process, supporting our local government, and honouring our cultural traditions, we can contribute positively to the fabric of Australian society.

As we look forward to the Diwali festivities, let us embrace the values of generosity, compassion, and inclusivity that define our community. This year, as we celebrate with family and friends, let us also reflect on the broader implications of our actions—both locally and globally.

Finally, the interplay between international events, local governance, and cultural celebrations underscores the importance of active citizenship and community engagement. The upcoming U.S. elections, Queensland's new government initiatives, and the celebration of Diwali all remind us that we are part of a larger world, where our voices and actions can create meaningful change. Let’s continue to celebrate our heritage while contributing to a brighter, more inclusive future for all Australians.

Youth Crime and Housing: Premier David Crisafulli's 100-Day Plan for Queensland

In his first moments as Queensland Premier, David Crisafulli set a proactive tone by unveiling a 100-day battle plan aimed at addressing pressing issues facing the state. His government’s agenda focuses on four key areas: youth crime, health, housing, and cost of living

One of Crisafulli's most critical focuses is youth crime. He has announced the drafting of the "Making Queensland Safer" bill, which is expected to be enacted by the end of the year. The Premier has committed to reducing the number of crime victims in relation to population growth over the next four years. Notably, the proposed legislation will include mandatory minimum sentences for youth offenders, particularly for serious crimes like murder, which Crisafulli argues will serve as a significant deterrent.

While he acknowledges the need for tougher sentencing, Crisafulli emphasizes that effective solutions require a multifaceted approach, including early intervention programs. His government

plans to allocate $15 million this financial year and $45 million annually over the next three years for what he describes as a “gold standard” early-intervention program to help prevent youth crime. Furthermore, two youth justice schools will be funded with a commitment of $20 million over the next two years, aimed at providing support for at-risk teenagers.

The Crisafulli government also recognizes the challenges facing Queensland’s health system, particularly given recent population growth that has stretched resources. His administration plans to invest an additional $590 million in health services over four years and aims to hire 34,200 new health workers by 2032. A major goal is to improve transparency within Queensland Health by publishing real-time hospital data within the first month of taking office.

However, key stakeholders like the Queensland branch of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) have called for more specific plans to reduce ambulance

ramping and elective surgery wait times. Crisafulli has proposed empowering local hospital boards with more decision-making authority to improve care delivery, but it remains unclear how quickly these changes will take effect.

Addressing the housing crisis is another priority for the Crisafulli government. The Premier has promised to abolish stamp duty for first home buyers, a significant move aimed at making home ownership more accessible. Additionally, a shared equity scheme is set to assist 1,000 participants by allowing the government to cover a substantial portion of the equity for new and existing homes, provided buyers can secure a minimum deposit.

Crisafulli’s plan includes a $1 billion commitment to maintain reduced public transport fares, which is expected to help ease the cost of living for Queenslanders. His administration aims to prevent budget blowouts in public infrastructure spending, although how this will directly impact

the finances of ordinary citizens remains uncertain. The government also seeks to streamline housing development processes by working closely with local councils to unlock more land for housing.

Finally, as Premier David Crisafulli embarks on his administration, the focus on youth crime, health, housing, and cost of living reflects a comprehensive approach to the challenges facing Queensland. While ambitious plans are laid out, the effectiveness of the government’s strategies will depend on the timely execution and the ability to address the complex issues at hand.

illegal and immoral fullscale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

There are always two sides to any conflict. As citizens of the free world, we have the luxury to consider both sides without prejudice.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia claims that Russia has existed for many centuries and contrasts this with Eastern Europe’s formation. He argues that Ukraine has always been part of Russia geographically and linguistically. Therefore, he claims that Russia’s actions in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, constitute a strategic military operation and are in no way an act of war, despite the condemnation from the West. In stark contrast, Australia’s objective in the Ukraine conflict, along with 28 other countries, is to provide weapons and financial assistance to empower Ukraine to end this war on its own terms.

In December 2022, US President Joe Biden pledged an additional $45 billion in support for Ukraine. At that time, this was the fourth US aid package, bringing total US funding for Ukraine since February to nearly $100 billion.

The Albanese Government continues its steadfast

support for Ukraine, recently announcing Australia’s largest single military assistance package, worth nearly $250 million. This brings Australia’s military assistance to Ukraine to more than $1.1 billion since the start of Russia’s fullscale invasion, and overall assistance to over $1.3 billion.

Monitoring by U.S. defense officials has estimated that Russia has probably spent up to $211 billion on equipping, deploying, and maintaining military operations in Ukraine, aggravated by losses exceeding $10 billion in canceled or postponed arms sales. In terms of human cost, the U.S. claims Russia has lost 600,000 lives—an alarming and phenomenal loss. However, the independent Russian media outlet Mediazona reports that 71,000 Russian soldiers have been identified and confirmed killed in Ukraine, not including civilian lives lost near the border communities. Regardless, the figures are frightening in any language.

Whatever the actual numbers, it is claimed that Russia has sought assistance from its allies, such as the North Korean dictator, with thousands of North Korean military personnel reportedly training in Russia. On the Ukrainian front, the United Nations Human

Rights Monitoring Mission has recorded 29,330 civilian casualties in Ukraine, comprising 10,191 killed and 19,139 injured since Russia's invasion on February 24, 2022.

This wider involvement of countries on both sides has led some commentators to suggest an imminent world war. A few claim we are already in a global war with heavy geopolitical participation on both sides.

The NGO Emergency Action Alliance reminds us of the economic disruptions globally, with Australia being indirectly impacted by the Ukraine/Russia conflict. Australia's agricultural industry has experienced mixed effects due to the war. Both Russia and Ukraine have been major powerhouses in agriculture, with a combined share of 2030% of the world’s exports of several key commodities.

As a prime exporter of grains, Australia has seen increased demand for its agricultural products, particularly wheat, as Ukraine's agricultural production has declined. This surge in demand has benefited Australian farmers, who have experienced higher prices and improved profitability. By late 2022, rural exports from Australia were up nearly 47% due to the war.

The global energy crisis is driving European countries to reduce their reliance on Russian oil and gas, creating opportunities for Australia. The United States is likely to support this shift, opening doors for Australian involvement. Regardless of the future political landscape in Russia, long-term global sanctions are expected to persist. Companies should evaluate their actions regarding international and Australian sanctions and consider their long-term presence and engagement in Russia. This is a critical moment for companies with Russian exposure to review and manage associated risks effectively.

About 1,950 kilometers to the south of Ukraine in the Middle East is a different type of volatility: the ageold Israeli-Palestinian rivalry. This conflict has reerupted to ruthless heights following the invasion of Israel’s sovereignty by the militant group Hamas and its associates.

Many global citizens remain oblivious to the reasons behind the premeditated bombings and eventual invasion of Israel by Hamas. By understanding the history of Palestine and the events that led to the current situation, we can better appreciate the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian

conflict and work toward a future marked by peace, justice, and reconciliation for all parties involved.

As far back as 1993, Israeli and Palestinian leaders met secretly in Oslo, Norway, and reached agreements signed in 1993 (at the White House) and 1995 (in Taba, Egypt), known as the Oslo Accords.

The Palestine Liberation Organization formally recognized Israel's right to exist while Israel recognized the PLO as the representative of the Palestinian people.

The Oslo Accords viewed peace between Israel and the Palestinians as a process to be implemented in incremental steps. Over the years, however, shifting demands coupled with changes in leadership on both sides have thwarted any mutual resolution. Sadly, the failure of the two sides to reach a final arrangement has led to the stalemate that exists today.

Australia has taken a stand in the volatile Israeli-Palestinian rivalry, as echoed by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in a press conference in Jerusalem earlier this year. She emphatically stated, “Australia is a friend of Israel's. We are also a friend of the Palestinian people.” During her trip to the Middle East, Senator Wong announced that Australia

commits $21.5 million in humanitarian support to Palestinians in Gaza and abroad.

The Brown University Watson Institute reports that the United States has spent $22.76 billion in support of Israel’s actions in Gaza and operations against the Houthis in Yemen.

In reflecting on the human costs of war, it is crucial to recognize the staggering toll of lives lost and the impact on communities. It goes without saying that the military spending of trillions of dollars by global leaders— whether democratic or dictatorial—ironically claims these expenditures are for the sake of achieving peace while neglecting the consequences of their actions.

Looking back over the past 60 years of recorded history, we may have regressed to a new low in decency as a global community, creating and fostering wars while diverting trillions to finance them. No generation will forget the USA and allies' involvement in the Vietnam War. Although many Americans chose not to speak of this conflict, it was described by diplomatturned-academic George Kennan as “the most disastrous undertaking” in 200 years of U.S. history. COntd. Celebrating Festivals, Community, and Awareness

It’s hard to believe the year has flown by so quickly! Here we are, already in November, and it's been an honor to the write for the Australian Indian Times. My heartfelt thanks go out to the Deo family and my mentor and friend, Jitendra Deo, who have provided such an amazing opportunity to connect with our community, advocate for readers, and support my studies and passion for media.

Throughout this journey, I’ve been thrilled by the enthusiasm of our readers who’ve engaged with our survey questions. Your honest, thoughtful feedback gives our paper the direction it needs to cover the issues you care about most.

To start, I’d like to wish everyone who celebrated a Happy Diwali! Diwali is a powerful time of year when homes are illuminated, families gather, and Lakshmi Puja is performed to honor Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and success. This year, Diwali took place between October 31st and November 1st, and I had the privilege of attending many local Diwali events, including volunteering at the Diwali celebration at Dreamworld, organized by the Indian Community of Gold Coast and led by Vamish Gji. It was a joy to be part of such a vibrant festival, witnessing the community come together in celebration and support.

November is an eventful month for our community. Alongside Diwali, many will gather on November 11th for Remembrance Day at the Australians of Indian

Heritage War Memorial in Sunnybank or their local RSLs to honor those who have served. On November 19th, we celebrate International Men’s Day, followed by Social Inclusion Week from November 23rd to December 1st, and on November 25th, we acknowledge the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism.

Another significant initiative this month is Movember. This campaign sheds light on men’s mental health, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and building a supportive community for men to feel empowered to care for their mental well-being. With male suicide rates shockingly high—three out of four suicides in Australia are by men—Movember addresses this urgent issue headon, encouraging men to speak openly about their struggles and take steps toward mental wellness. We’re aiming for a future where men are not only motivated

to care for their mental health but are also supported in doing so.

In line with this, I’m excited to invite you to the upcoming ACFC International Men’s Night Gala Dinner, presented by TFH Hire Services Australia and Titan Garages and Sheds, to raise awareness and show support for men’s mental health. Here are the details:

• Date: November 23rd

• Time: 6 PM

• Venue: Logan Entertainment Centre

Be sure to grab your tickets while they’re still available!

This month, I was delighted to

get out and volunteer alongside other youth in our community.

I had the unforgettable opportunity to meet with Samoa’s Prime Minister, the Hon. Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa, who expressed her delight at seeing young people involved and supporting each other. It was a proud moment to share how grateful I am to the Deo family for their mentorship and support in my community work.

My friends and I also had the chance to volunteer at the Forest Lake Community Festival, working day and night to bring people together. With the rising cost of living, events like these are essential, giving locals a place to connect and celebrate without added financial stress. Special thanks to President Kylie Gates and her team for their hard work in organizing this festival! Next up, we’ll be back for the Forest Lake Community Carols, and if you’d like to join or learn more, reach out. We’ll have performances from Sargam Music and many more.

Last month, I attended the Queensland Multicultural Council Dinner, where I enjoyed connecting with some of our most dedicated community leaders. I was honored to receive a special gift from Dr. Noel, chairman of the Noel Group of Companies—a book titled Pocket Philosophy for Sixty Plus Flowers of Paradise – Your Mind Never Grows Old. This incredible gift from such a respected leader was a reminder of the wisdom and kindness in our community. I’m also deeply grateful to GOPIO Brisbane for recognizing our efforts with an award for community service.

In response to reader feedback, I’ve made it my mission to involve more young people in volunteering and cultural activities. I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us in the survey, helping us bring you content that resonates with your values.

In December, I’ll be helping sell Lions cakes for the Lions Club of Inala to fundraise for community causes. You can purchase one

directly from the club, or you’re welcome to join us and volunteer! It’s an incredibly rewarding experience, especially as we head into the holiday season.

Finally, I’d like to reach out to anyone who may need a little extra support this Christmas. The holiday season, while joyful, can also be challenging, both financially and emotionally. If you’re feeling isolated or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. There are local charities I work with that are here to help. Thank you for reading this month’s article, and I can’t wait to read your November survey responses. The Impact of America's Elections on Australia

In 2004, Australia and the United States signed a landmark free trade agreement (FTA) following a year of intense negotiations. This agreement marked Australia’s second FTA, after its earlier agreement with Singapore in 2003, and was a pivotal moment in Australian trade policy.

The U.S.-Australia FTA established a framework that not only enhanced bilateral trade but also paved the way for Australia to pursue further FTAs with other nations, including Japan, China, India, South

Korea, and Malaysia.

Historically, Australia’s trade landscape has evolved significantly since its early colonial days, which were heavily reliant on imports from Europe. As local industries began to emerge, Australia shifted to exporting resources such as coal and wool. Initially, trade policy was tightly controlled by the British Colonial Office until the mid-19th century when greater autonomy was granted to Australian colonies. The gold rush and subsequent agricultural booms positioned Australia as one of the wealthiest nations per capita by the 1880s.

However, the economic collapse during the 1890s depression intensified debates between free traders and protectionists, leading to a complex tariff regime post-Federation.

Throughout the 20th century, Australia predominantly adopted protectionist policies, employing high tariffs to support local industries, particularly after World

War I and during the Great Depression. This approach began to change in the 1970s as economic pressures and globalization prompted tariff reductions, leading to Australia signing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1947.

By the late 1990s, with changing global trade dynamics and a rising

trade deficit with the U.S., there was a shift in Australian policy towards negotiating bilateral FTAs. The successful negotiation and implementation of the U.S.-Australia FTA was a significant step in this transition, promoting greater trade integration and economic cooperation between the two nations, ultimately reshaping

Australia’s approach to international trade.

The Australian United States Free Trade Agreement has polarised opinion in Australia.

Critics claim that Australian negotiators failed to gain a significant share of the American market while

at the same time providing significant concessions to the US on biosecurity, health policy, intellectual property and government procurement policies.

The process was further criticised for being hasty and secretive.

Advocates claim that one of the largest markets in the world was opened to Australian producers and consumers and that the agreement brought two long-term allies even closer.

The Australian American Free Trade Agreement marked a shift from Australia’s traditional focus on tariff reduction and multilateral trade agreements towards bilateral, preferential liberalisation.

The agreement became the catalyst for the Australian Government to initiate similar discussions with other major trading partners – Japan, China, India, South Korea, Malaysia and ASEAN all began negotiations with Australia over the next four years.

Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland

tHE Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland celebrated a vibrant Diwali festival at King George Square in Brisbane City, bringing together the local community in a joyous display of culture and unity. The event featured traditional music, dance performances, and delicious Indian cuisine, creating a festive atmosphere that illuminated the square with the spirit of Diwali.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Preethi Suraj, the President of the Federation, and her dedicated team for

orchestrating such an incredible celebration. Their hard work and commitment made this event a memorable experience for all attendees, fostering a sense of togetherness and cultural pride.

As families gathered to light diyas and enjoy the festivities, the celebration truly reflected the essence of Diwali—the triumph of light over darkness. The success of this event is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of the Indian community in Queensland. We look forward to more celebrations in the future!

Mastering Money: Building the Foundation for Financial & Wealth Freedom with Pushpa Vaghela

FInAnCIAL independence

is a goal many aspire to, but few truly achieve. Why? The answer often lies in how individuals perceive and approach their financial lives. Programs like our Wealth Mastery aim to transform people’s relationship with money by helping them identify their financial chokeholds and make the necessary changes to achieve long-term wealth and freedom.

The journey begins with understanding why mastering money is essential. For some, the desire for financial mastery stems from a vision of freedom—freedom to live life on their own terms, free from the stress of debt or the limitations of living paycheck to paycheck. Others seek to build generational wealth, create a life of abundance, or simply gain more control over their financial destiny. Our Wealth Mastery participants enter with a vision: they want to walk away with a new understanding of how to grow their financial assets, eliminate the roadblocks in their financial lives, and create lasting financial freedom.

MAStEry?

For many, the path to

wealth is blocked by internal chokeholds. Two or three major obstacles often stand in the way of financial success. These barriers can be self-imposed—limiting beliefs, emotional triggers, or unhealthy money habits. Perhaps fear of failure or a history of financial insecurity leads to self-sabotage. For others, the chokeholds are external: lack of financial education, poor investment decisions, or even cultural and societal pressures that shape their attitudes toward money.

The key to breaking free from these financial constraints is identifying them clearly. During the Financial & Wealth Mastery program, participants often ask themselves hard-hitting questions: What needs to change in my thoughts, emotions, beliefs, habits, and behaviors around money?

Others might discover that they’ve been emotionally reactive when it comes to investing, pulling out of the market too early out of fear of loss. The path to financial freedom

and meaning, and physical body.

Financial wealth, while important in its own right, also supports growth and fulfillment in other areas. For instance, mastering finances provides the time and freedom to pursue meaningful work or strengthen relationships. It reduces stress, contributing to better mental and physical health, and allows individuals to give back to their communities. Our, participants are encouraged to notice how their new financial insights create ripples of positive change in other parts of their lives.

individuals address these underlying beliefs and emotions, making space for more effective financial strategies.

This introspection can reveal where they have been stuck and what must shift in order for them to achieve financial prosperity.

For example, someone might realise they’ve been operating under the belief that they are not “good with money,” and therefore shy away from opportunities that could lead to wealth.

The Pyramid of Mastery: How Financial Success Impacts Every Area of Life

One of the core principles of Financial & Wealth Mastery is the understanding that wealth affects every area of life. The Pyramid of Mastery, a framework that outlines seven areas of life that are interconnected: finances, career/mission, time, relationships, emotions

BuILdIng A StrOng FInAnCIAL FOundAtIOn

A key lesson in all our Mastery programs is the importance of laying a strong foundation for financial success. One common reason people fail to achieve wealth is that they never clearly define what wealth means to them. If you don’t know where you’re headed, how can you possibly get there?

Wealth must be a clearly defined, attainable goal. People often set vague or moving targets for wealth, making it feel out of reach. To counteract this, Wealth Mastery emphasises the

need for precise financial outcomes. Participants learn to create a clear financial plan with specific milestones. This includes getting realistic about their finances, setting achievable goals, and following through on the plan consistently.

Another major pitfall people face is relying too heavily on external “experts” without taking personal responsibility for their financial decisions.

Pushpa's approach advocates for individuals to take full responsibility for their financial education and decisions. This doesn’t mean ignoring expert advice, but rather learning to critically assess information, take ownership of their plan, and adjust as needed.

CrEAtIng A nEw

FInAnCIAL StOry

One of the most powerful exercises in Financial & Wealth Mastery is the creation of a new financial story. Everyone has an old financial story—beliefs and experiences that have shaped their relationship with money up to this point. Some people’s old stories are filled with fear, scarcity, or self-doubt. These stories keep them stuck in cycles of financial struggle or prevent them from taking risks that could lead to

success. The goal of Financial & Wealth Mastery is to rewrite this story. Participants are asked to create a new narrative—one that reflects their vision for wealth, the actions they are willing to take, and the outcomes they desire. This shift in mindset is crucial because, as Pushpa emphasises, all wealth begins and ends in the mind. Financial success starts with believing that it is possible, defining it clearly, and creating a plan to achieve it.

Financial & Wealth Mastery is more than just a theory for Pushpa, it’s a blueprint for life. Mastering money is about more than accumulating wealth— it’s about creating a life of freedom, purpose, and contribution. The strategies learned with Pushpa through these media articles with Australia India Times lay the groundwork for lasting financial independence, but the real transformation happens in the mind. When participants shift their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors around money, they unlock the door to a life of abundance, not just financially, but in all areas that matter most.

Thinking of Giving Your Children a House Deposit?

wE are told that our kids will come to parents with begging bowls in the hope that their parents’ will bail them out for a house deposit.

Many will tell you this has all to do with the consumption of lunches and breakfasts of avocado and toast and wild irresponsible living. But I am not so sure. You would have to consume a crapload of avocado and bake a crapload of bread before you go through an entire house deposit.

No. This is because the rate of house price rises, and wage inflation are not precisely what you call synced. This means house prices are like a runaway express train, and wage rises are as slow as a tortoise.

Don’t get me wrong. Wage rises are good, but compared to house prices, they are crap. This means that banks want more extensive deposits before they lend, forcing children to knock on parents’ doors.

Parents especially those from India are deemed as mean and cruel if they do not support their children and give them their hardearned savings. If you have one child giving your child a sizeable pot of money may be doable. If you have 3 children, it might be a bit hard.

But I look at house prices and think we live in an insane world—and I bet you do, too. So much so that despite setting up my kids for the financial future, I think it is only a matter of time before both my kids come to

me with a begging bowl.

At the time, I hope I do not listen to my wife, who is as sentimental as any mother, and I hope I do not listen to whatever is left of my heart either. I hope and pray that I listen only to my brain and do what I tell all my clients to do when they ask me for advice about giving kids their money.

Why do I say this? Well, we become gooey like a warm chocolate dessert when it comes to our kids. Logic goes out of the window, and we become governed by our hearts when logic is needed.

That is because I am finding that all those warm and gooey parents have worked out that warm and gooey does not work for them and now need to move to something stiffer.

This is not because their children have become nasty, run away with money, or even refused to pay it back. In many cases, your kid will not be the problem. It could be their partners.

Because of this, many lawyers become involved. When that happens, you could be throwing not just a deposit but a chunk of money at legal fees as well. When kids come to their parents with a begging bowl and ask for money, parents tend to give it. There is rarely a discussion of gifts or loans, and there is almost no chance that any of it is put on paper.

Generally, I will always tell clients that if their child asks for money, they should

document it as a loan, even if they do not intend ask for it back.

The problem is that many will not follow this advice. Why? That is because parents become emotional when it comes to their children.

I say this because once money is given without paperwork, it is hard to get back. If you want it back, you must go to court (hence the many lawyers), and it is likely that in court, it will be deemed a gift. If it is deemed

a gift, there is a chance you may have donated the money not to your child but to someone you may not actually like.

I know what you are thinking. When would that happen?

Well, picture this. Your son is lovely and decides to marry an equally lovely girl. They are so adorable that you are 100% in favour of their marriage. Soon after, they come to you for a house loan. And

because they are so lovely, you give them $100,000.

A few years pass, and 2 equally lovely grandchildren are born.

Unknown to you, the couple started having problems and decided to divorce.

You now decide that you would like your $100,000 back. But your ‘now not so loverly daughter-in-law’ argues it was a gift, and you try to argue it was a loan. Your son backs you up on

Community Gathers for Family-Hosted

this, too.

So, in court, the judge will ask the logical questions: If it was a loan, where is the loan documentation? Are there any emails suggesting it was a loan? Has interest been paid?

Without this, the judge would conclude that the amount was a gift and that gifts cannot be claimed back. And this ultimately means you have gifted your notso-lovely, soon-to-be-exdaughter-in-law a minimum of 60% as she also has custody and needs to look after the grandchildren. It is entirely possible that your ex-daughter-in-law gets the house, and your son ends up living with you again with you being $100,000 poorer. This is exactly what happened to one of my clients, so do not think it will not happen.

However, this does not only apply to giving money to purchase a home. We often see it in succession plans where parents consider passing down their business. If shares in the business are gifted to the child who subsequently splits from their partner, the business ownership could be divided, too.

My prediction is that as more kids come to their parents for a handout, more parents will get caught out. If you don’t want to get caught out do the logical thing and arrange some loan documentation. written by Hitesh Mohanlal, Chartered Accountant

The free event at Pine Rivers Park, Strathpine was particularly enjoyed by kids and families with three inflatable rides to jump around, participation in stage activities, Henna and face painting marquees, fireworks, giveaways and best dressed audience prizes from our sponsors and lots of space for children to run around.

RJ Ari interviewed the local Councillors, community leaders, sponsors and the general public to get a perspective on what multiculturalism means to them. Unity in Diversity and the strong need for not for profit organisations to work together certainly

emerged as common themes with increased government focus sought for sustained multicultural initiatives.

Dance and musical performances graced the stage throughout the day and the audience were left mesemerised by dancers and musicians

puJO 2024

Introduction and Uniqueness of Oikotan Durga Pujo 2024

Oikotan Inc. recently organized their fourth edition of their biggest festival on the 12th and 13th of October 2024 at the Albany Creek Community Centre, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. “Durga Pujo” the biggest turnout till date with more than 500 plates for food served in two days, guest performer, Ujaan Mukherjee who performed on both the days and the introduction of Kolkata street food.

What makes Oikotan Durga Pujo 2024 one-of-akind is the homely feeling and as most participants, members and patrons have been calling it since inception – “Nijer Barir Pujo”. When all other pujo organized by other associations give the “baroari” feeling, it’s the vibe and the feeling of organizing/ taking part of your own pujo that makes this pujo unique and makes us stand out from the rest.

tEAM

The executive team comprises of the husbandwife couple in Shaona Hazra(President) and Animesh Das(Secretary) and Uttorio Datta(Treasurer).

“For us, Oikotan Inc. is a child that is born out of love and passion for our Bengali culture and tradition and the urge to create a piece

of home away from home, Kolkata. We have had our share of ups and lows, but it is our utmost love and passion that help us nurture our child in Oikotan Inc, turn four. Although we envisioned and created Oikotan Inc., it is the love and support of the wider community that truly defined where Oikotan Inc. stands and how far we’ve managed to come. We owe it to our biggest supporters, patrons, all the volunteers, the amazing team and all the individuals who gave their heart and soul into curving a niche for us. Oikotan Inc. now belongs to all of them and we sincerely hope and pray that Oikotan Durga Pujo 2024 will turn out to be a stepping stone into something great to follow for us We are overwhelmed by the way everyone came forward in different capacities from setting up the decoration, cutting fruits to getting up early in the morning to prepare bhog for pujo and to prepare for their performances with utmost sincerity and commitment. We couldn’t have asked for anything more from this incredible group of people and the wider community. On behalf of the entire executive team, THANK YOU, team Oikotan and the Oikotan Inc. family!!!”

have always focused on certain theme as far as the decoration is concerned. However, this year was an exception. Celebrations were a little muted and the theme portrayed and conveyed a rather symbolic protest amidst the festivities. This was our way of showing that we stand with Abhaya and the protesting doctors back home.

pEOpLE OF tHE puJO:

People from different walks of life and professions like hospitality, IT, Consultancy etc. came together to bring their varied ranges of skills and creativity and contributed in various different capacities to make this Pujo a success. From joining the rehearsals months in advance to preparing and serving 100s of plates of Kolkata style street food, such community members have been involved in every little process to make it a grand success. Samir Das who is also a chef at a very popular restaurant, was the main driver behind introducing Kolkata Street Food at our Pujo. While ,Saikiran and Jayati Basu did the heavy lifting in serving all of the amazing food, Saswati Basu Chatterjee was the main anchor behind all of the rituals on stage ensuring everything was done flawlessly and with utmost devotion.

Our priest is a Processing Manager at a construction services company dedicates

his full devotion over the two days trying to observe and follow a shortened version of the Pujo while ensuring all rituals and traditions are followed to the best of the abilities.

puJO rItuALS, FOOd And KOLKAtA StrEEt FOOd At Oikotan, Day 2 is when we observe Shosthi and Saptami pujo. The highlight of these rituals is definitely “Kolanbou Snan” where the female members conduct a special ritual outside the community centre on the lawn While day 2 is when Ashtami, Anjali and Nabami puja are conducted followed by Dashami Puja and Boron. Highlight of day 2 was definitely bhog er kichuri which is cooked by our muslim brother and caterer from Bangladesh. It’s a trip down the memory lane as we are reminded of our home back in Kolkata and the familiar Ashtami r lunch. This is followed by Shandhi pujo where 108 pradip was lighted by our participants and

members. Finally concluding the celebrations with bidding farewell to Maa and her children and shidur khela which is what the women and the female members of our community look forward to the most.

No puja is complete without the familiar and the nostalgic street food of Kolkata. While quintessential Bengali spread comprising of khichuri, beguni, chutney and mishti brought smile to the faces of the participants at lunch along with the star of the show, mutton for dinner, the main attraction this year were phuchka, momo and malai cha. A chef and also an important member of Oikotan, Samir Das cooked up a storm in the kitchen churning out hundreds of plates of momos, phuchka and about 200 cups of cha over the two days.

CuLturAL prOgrAM

It was packed two nights full of some amazing acts including group dance, skit and singing.

This year, we witnessed some mind-blowing singing, dancing, audio and short drama. From the flirtatious neighbours as portrayed by our founder members Saswati and Animesh to a tribute to the Bangla rock bands by another founder member, Uttorio. The main act was however a tribute to Abhaya and a show of symbolic protest through a dance drama featuring the president,

Shaona and other debutants, Moly, Aanchol and Avantika. It was an act depicting crime against women and the need to protect and respect womanhood and promote women empowerment. This year, we brought back and hosted Ujaan Mukherjee who performed on both the days churning out the famous dance numbers. The participants enjoyed thoroughly while singing out loud and getting on stage to dance alongside.

Durga Pujo 2024: BSQ’s Tribute to Tradition Amidst Heartfelt Reflections

tHIS year of 2024

welcomed Goddess Durga with a heavy heart, a gloom and shock loomed in the minds and being of Brisbanites, waking up to the Abhaya Case at R G Kar Medical College only 60 days prior to Devi Pokhyo.

Australian Indian Radio brings us the Mahalaya every year, this Mahalaya was loaded with emotion and prayers for a balanced and respectful existence of man and woman. If we have created Goddess Durga as an emblem of power and strength, why

do we slay our human durga in flesh and blood!!

The protest for Abhaya was at the background of 2024 Durga Pujo Theme for BSQ. Amidst the dilemma of “Puja or No Puja”, quiet protests of solidarity and slogans, Bengali Society of Queensland was feeling the need to devote and put their mind and body to hail Goddess Durga in prayers for “good over evil” once again.

The 27th year of Durga Pujo at BSQ found its home at Coorparoo Secondary

College for the third consecutive year, mondop decoration by Shukumar Chattopadhyay and lighting by Prabir Halder. As always, the highlights for the 3 days have been food, activities, cultural program, camaraderie and brotherhood.

As the largest banner of Bengalis in Brisbane, BSQ is proud to held together a member load of more than 300 families living in Brisbane and still growing. The motto is to include communities that have settled away from India

and join in the vibes and colour of our motherland, dance to the beats of the Dhaak and bow together in chanting the Durga Strotyo “ Horo papong, Horo kleshong, Horo marri, Hori priye….” Durga Pujo is the biggest festival of Kolkatta Bengali communities all over the world and its existence is noted in the delicacies of Bengali food, the display of colourful Bengali sarees and dresses, matching jewelleries, Pujo r bhog, plethora of sweets, dhunichi naach, dhoop-

Take the rights path – World AIDS Day 2024

“tAKE the rights path” is this year’s theme for World AIDS Day (WAD) on December 1st, highlighting the critical importance of protecting the human rights of those affected by HIV. This focus on human rights is a key element in the global efforts to end AIDS by 2030.

In Australia, the rights of people living with HIV are safeguarded by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, and laws relating to confidentiality. Individuals living with HIV in Australia can work in nearly all occupations and are generally not required to disclose their

HIV positive status, except in a few specific circumstances:

• Health workers performing exposure-prone procedures

• Applying for certain types of insurance

• Joining the military

• Donating blood

At the end of 2022, there were an estimated 28,870 people living with HIV in Australia, with 555 new HIV notifications (Source: Annual Surveillance Report 2023: HIV). Although there is no cure for HIV, it can be managed effectively like other chronic health conditions. To ensure the best outcomes, it is

important to:

• Get diagnosed early. HIV testing is simple, yet 7% of people living with HIV in Australia remain undiagnosed. Additionally, people born in overseas have higher rates of undiagnosed cases and late diagnoses (Source: Annual Surveillance Report 2023: HIV). You can get tested through your GP, a community testing centre (rapid.org.au) or by ordering a free HIV home self-test kit at www.hivtest.au or www. rapid.org.au or purchasing one from www.atomohivtest. com ($29.99 plus postage & handling).

• Start treatment early. HIV treatments are highly effective. In Queensland, all people, including those on temporary visas (after living in Queensland for at least 3 months), can access free HIV treatment and care. For more details, visit https:// www.qld.gov.au/health/ condition/mens-health/hiv/ hiv-aids. Effective treatment keeps HIV at undetectable levels (Undetectable = Untransmissible or U=U), meaning it cannot be passed on through sex. This is known as Treatment as Prevention (TasP).

• Use protection to reduce

risks. Condoms, PrEP and PEP are available to prevent HIV transmission through sex. Since HIV can also be transmitted through infected blood, it is important to be cautious of risks such as tattooing, body piercing, unsterile medical or cosmetic procedures. The Leadership Kingdom: Developing Character and Responsibility Through God’s Path

In the journey of life, especially in leadership, many of us have found ourselves asking, "Why do I have to go through this route?" It is human nature to desire ease and predictability, but more often than not, God's chosen path for us involves unexpected twists and challenges. For leaders, learning to trust in God’s route is not just about enduring hardship— it's about developing the very essence of who we are: our character and our sense of responsibility. This philosophy lies at the heart of The Leadership Kingdom, a leadership development initiative designed to guide individuals through personal and professional growth with God as their compass.

EMBrACIng gOd'S rOutE

The Leadership Kingdom, which I founded, focuses on helping people understand that God’s route is always intentional. We all have dreams and visions, much like Joseph in the Bible. When Joseph was a young boy, he had a dream that his family would bow down to him—a vision of greatness bestowed upon him by God. Yet, as Genesis 37:9-10 shows us, God didn’t reveal the entire path to Joseph. If He had, Joseph may have run the other way. After all, who would willingly choose betrayal by their own brothers, being sold into slavery, unjust accusations,

imprisonment, and years of being forgotten?

But this is where God’s wisdom shines through. He doesn’t just deliver us to our destination; He molds us along the way. If Joseph had known every detail of his route, he likely would have remained a shepherd, happy in the familiarity of his life. However, the trials Joseph endured were not for nothing. Each trial honed his leadership skills, deepened

Key Scripture: Romans 8:38-39 (NLT)

"And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

dEAr Reader, We’re thrilled to share with you the greatest news on earth: The Good News of God’s unbreakable love! Our message is simple and life-changing: God is real, personal, and deeply desires a relationship with you. He’s not a distant figure or a creation of human imagination—He’s a living, loving person who you can truly know and connect with. This incredible truth is found in the Bible, and

we invite you to explore it with an open heart. You don’t need a life-time to experience God’s love and salvation—it’s available to you today. Right now. If you're wondering how to make this year different from the past, the answer lies in embracing the true source of Good News: Jesus Christ. Whether your past was filled with pain or failure, there’s no need to look back. The Good News is for you, right here and

is not something we are born with. We must cultivate the qualities that make us effective and compassionate leaders. God’s route, though often difficult, develops two critical traits in us: character and responsibility.

Character is the foundation of leadership. In today’s fast-paced world, where shortcuts and compromises are often glorified, leaders need unwavering character to stand firm in their values. Character is not built in moments of ease; it is forged in the fires of adversity. Just as Joseph learned humility and patience through his hardships, so too must we learn to endure trials with grace and integrity.

Responsibility, on the other hand, is the outward expression of character. To be a leader is to bear the weight of decisions, actions, and the well-being of others. Many wish for leadership roles but shy away from the responsibilities they entail.

his trust in God, and prepared him for his destiny as a great ruler in Egypt. In The Leadership Kingdom, we teach that every step along God’s chosen path—whether pleasant or painful—has a purpose in shaping who we are meant to become.

dEVELOpIng CHArACtEr And rESpOnSIBILIty

One of the fundamental beliefs in The Leadership Kingdom is that leadership

Just as Joseph was entrusted with managing Egypt’s resources during a famine, leaders today must take ownership of their roles, understanding that their actions have far-reaching consequences.

In The Leadership Kingdom, we emphasise that leadership is about service. It is about taking responsibility not just for your own success, but for the success of those around you. Whether in the workplace, the community, or within your family, leadership is a calling to

now, and it comes with a loving invita-tion from God Himself. He’s offering you the chance to know Him in a way that no religion, tradition, or ritual can provide.

I am convinced that experiencing and receiving God’s love is the most important purpose of your life. Jesus Christ offers unconditional love and forgiveness—something nothing else in this world can match. In His “Maha Bali” (Supreme Sacrifice), Jesus didn’t just talk about love; He demonstrated it by paying the price for all humanity's sins.

Romans 3:23 tells us that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glory, but Romans 6:23 promises that the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. This is the Good News we’re sharing: God’s love is here for you, and nothing—not death, demons, fear, or worry—can separate you from it.

Can you imagine that you can experience this perfect love and security?

Can you imagine that

serve with humility, wisdom, and diligence.

truStIng gOd'S tIMIng

Another key element of The Leadership Kingdom’s teachings is understanding and accepting God’s timing. In our fast-paced world, where instant gratification is the norm, waiting can feel like a burden. But God’s timing is perfect, even if we don’t always understand it at the moment. Joseph waited many years in slavery and prison before he was finally elevated to a position of power. During that time, God was not only preparing him for leadership but also preparing the world around him to receive him as a leader.

The same is true for us. Sometimes, we feel ready for the next stage of our lives, but God asks us to wait. In those moments, we must remember that waiting is not passive. It is an active process of preparation. God is shaping us, molding our hearts, and aligning circumstances in ways we may not see. At The Leadership Kingdom, we encourage leaders to trust in this divine timing, knowing that every season has a purpose.

FAItH In tHE prOCESS

Many of us find ourselves at crossroads, unsure of the path ahead and hesitant about the challenges we face. But as leaders, we must have faith in the process. The route may be difficult, the challenges daunting, but if we trust in

God’s plan, we will emerge not only stronger but also more equipped to fulfill our purpose.

The Leadership Kingdom is built on the belief that leadership is a journey of faith. God leads us on a path designed to refine our character and increase our responsibility. This journey is not meant to be easy, but it is essential for those who wish to lead with purpose and integrity. Just as Joseph’s trials prepared him for greatness, so too will our own challenges prepare us for the roles we are destined to fulfill.

In SuMMAry LEAdIng wItH purpOSE

As leaders, we must embrace God’s route, knowing that it is shaping us into the individuals we are meant to be. At The Leadership Kingdom, we teach that true leadership requires a willingness to be molded by God’s hands. It requires patience, faith, and a commitment to growth. The journey may be long, and the path uncertain, but in the end, it leads to a life of purpose, service, and fulfillment.

God doesn’t just show us where we are going; He prepares us for the journey. The Leadership Kingdom is here to support individuals on that journey, helping them grow into the leaders they are called to be— leaders who are shaped by character, driven by responsibility, and guided by faith.

you know God like a personal Saviour and a true Freind?

No amount of money or good deeds can earn our peace and friendship with God. A child-like humility and trust is the way to know God personally. No amount

of intellectual knowledge and information will lead anyone to God.

All you need is a simple, sincere heart that is ready to turn to God. Jesus, the author of your life, is waiting for you to know Him personally and to walk with Him in faith. He is the

most loving person you will ever meet, and He desires to bring you into a relationship of peace, hope, and joy.

We invite you to pray this simple prayer from your heart:

"Dear Father God, I thank you today for speaking to my heart. I repent of my wrongs, and I confess with my mouth, 'Jesus is Lord.' I believe in my heart that Jesus died for my sins and that You raised Him from the dead for my salvation. Help me to know Jesus more each day and grow in Your grace and mercy. Teach me Your ways so I can live a life that honours You and loves others. Amen."

If you prayed that prayer, we would love to hear from you!

The journey to knowing God starts today, and the Good News is this: nothing can separate you from His love.

THANK YOU KINDLY

dEAr reader, it is with much joy, we bring to you the word of God. We all have opportunities to complain, whinge and be ungrateful but that’s not the best way to live. When we go about being thankful for our families, our friends, our freedom and what we have then we give opportunity for Gods blessings to flow into our lives. Having an attitude of thanksgiving is a great way to live. That means instead of focusing on your difficulties, you choose to focus on your blessings. The question is do you want more, problem or do you want more blessings. That is, if you are going to see breakthroughs, new opportunities, the right people in your life, then you need an attitude of being thankful. Be thankful where you are planted today, where you work and your parents. When we go about being thankful in advance,

that’s really an expression of your faith.

In the scriptures (Luke 17v11-19), we read of Jesus healing ten lepers. But only one came back to thank Jesus for his miracle. The other nine did not. The one who came back to thank Jesus did not just turn up after his healing. Way before he got healed, he was already living with an attitude of being thankful. It looks like he was saying “Dear God I know of my condition, but I am thankful for my healing, I am sure of your goodness, I am so sure that you are working in my life, that I’m going to thank you right now for what you are going to do tomorrow.” He was already living a life of being grateful. That is why in verse19 Jesus already knowing of his great faith declared “Arise, go your way. Your faith (your personal trust in Me and your confidence in God’s power) has restored you to health.” Through his faith and trust in God, this man had developed an attitude of being thankful.

Here are 4 things we can learn from being thankful.

a) All happy people may not be thankful, but all thankful people are happy. Living with a grateful or ungrateful attitude will determine the kind of life you going to have. Bible

verse

b) When you are thankful for what you have, you are always rewarded with more. Happiness never comes to those who do not appreciate what they have.

c) Gratitude is a choice. It takes a strong person to be grateful and give something from their heart. Giving a piece of their mind is the work of the weak, they struggle to be grateful, living a life of being upset, frustrated and angry.

d) Happiness is not about getting what you want but being happy with what you have. Ungratefulness increases problems. Gratefulness increases blessings.

So today and every day we are to have an attitude of gratitude and live each day in thanksgiving!

God bless you

COntd. FrOM pg 4

“Disastrous” is an understatement; upon the U.S. withdrawal in March 1973, it was estimated that 58,132 Americans died in Vietnam, with more than 150,000 wounded and 21,000 permanently disabled. Over three million Americans served in the Vietnam War, and an estimated 100,000 fled the United States to avoid conscription, with approximately 50,000 deserters. The Veterans Administration estimates that 830,000 Vietnam veterans suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder, with 480,000 considered disabled. The estimated cost of the Vietnam War during the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations was $176 billion.

However, a wave of justifications, criticisms, and retributions followed. Some argued that Vietnam was a nationalist conflict in which Washington had no business intervening. Australia sent over 60,000 personnel to Vietnam, with 523 dying as a result of the war and nearly

2,400 wounded, incurring a military cost of $220 million and millions more in care for veterans.

Just 28 years later, on September 18, 2001, the Bush administration enacted sweeping measures to combat terrorism, including invading Afghanistan. Twenty years later, U.S. participation in the Afghanistan war became the longest in U.S. history. Since invading Afghanistan in 2001, the United States has spent $2.313 trillion on the war, including operations in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. After the Afghanistan War, the U.S. government is obligated to provide lifetime care for veterans of this conflict, with a total of 243,000 deaths among military, allied workers, and civilians.

Australia spent $10 billion during the war and $213 million post-2021, resulting in 41 Australian deaths. Both sides of any conflict tenaciously stand by their justifications for engaging in war. However, the true human and monetary costs cannot be precisely

determined, for it is war.

Wouldn't the immense sums poured into wars make us envious of those fighting against poverty daily? According to the Reserve Bank of Australia, high inflation and interest rates continue to pressure household budgets. Real disposable incomes—after tax and interest payments and adjusted for inflation— have declined sharply since the start of 2022 on a percapita basis. More people than usual are seeking support from community organizations like food banks, often for the first time, including dual-income households and mortgagors.

The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research has updated the poverty line for Australia to the March quarter of 2024. Inclusive of housing costs, the poverty line is $1,145.61 per week for a family of two adults (one working) and two dependent children. This is an increase of $4.78 from the previous quarter (December 2023).

The OECD – Organisation for Economic Co-operation

inevitable

and Development Poverty has found that poverty exists even in wealthy countries like Australia. A 2022 study indicated that 3.3 million people in Australia live below the poverty line, including 761,000 children. Many Australians face significant disadvantages and challenges in their daily lives. A major driver of poverty and homelessness in Australia is the rising cost of housing, making it increasingly difficult for families to make ends meet.

In 2024, the median weekly rent in Australia is $627, an increase of 8.5% from the previous year. For families living under the poverty line, affording a safe home can be out of reach, forcing many to choose between paying rent or buying food. Two million Australian households have experienced food insecurity in the past 12 months, leading to reduced food intake, skipped meals, or consumption of lower quality or unhealthy food. Sixty percent of households experiencing food insecurity go an entire day without

For the 761,000 children living in poverty in Australia, the detrimental effects on their education, health, and future outcomes are profound. By age 15, children growing up in poverty may be up to three years behind in school compared to their peers.

We are not advocating a pacifist doctrine entirely, as reasonable wars for global peace to end tyrannical regimes and genocide may

be justified. However, it is crucial to recognize that the trillions of dollars spent on wars, especially those that have failed to yield positive outcomes like Vietnam and Afghanistan, have obliterated hundreds of thousands of precious lives. Moreover, the casualties of these wars include their respective pre-war homeless and poverty-stricken citizens in these wealthy countries, now burdened with war debt that further hampers efforts to combat poverty at home. This is the dilemma of our age, and we must ask ourselves: when will a generation rise up and demand enough of war, and advocate for new “Oslo Accords” between Palestine and Israel, or a new treaty regarding the RussianUkrainian border?

This may not be a simplistic view; it could ensure a flow of vital resources into alleviating the suffering of their impoverished citizens. Which generation across these volatile regions will rise up and demand that enough is enough when it comes to war?

IndIrA Gandhi was an offspring of a political dynasty, famous for its contribution to the Indian independence movement. Her grandfather Motilal Nehru and father Jawaharlal Nehru were leading figures in the Indian National Congress. Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister of independent India and served at this post until his death.

Indira became prime minister in 1966 and continued in this role until 1977. She again served as prime minister from 1980 to 1984. Her leadership steered India through a challenging national and international political environment.

Early life - Indira was born on November 19, 1917 at Anand Bhawan in Prayagraj. She was the first and only child of her parents Kamala and Jawaharlal Nehru. When the news of her birth was delivered to grandfather Motilal, someone at the house mentioned that a son should have been born to Jawaharlal. Motilal at once said, “This daughter of Jawahar may prove better than a thousand sons!” His statement proved to be prophetic. Motilal chose his mother’s name Indrani, modified to Indira for the baby and Jawaharlal added Priyadarshini, which means ‘dear to sight’. Thus Indira Priyadarshini became her official name and Indu her nickname.

Indira grew up amidst the love of kinfolk and luxuries of a wealthy household. She later remembered that while her grandfather met her demands, he believed in strictness of upbringing. Her parents were even less compromising than him in routine matters. Indira spent happy time with her grandfather whom she called Dadu. Her grandmother Swarup Rani also pampered her.

From her childhood she was exposed to a number of people who visited and stayed in Anand Bhawan and to the undercurrent of the Indian freedom movement. Amongst the crowds of people, Indira was closest to her mother whom she loved deeply. Her mother told her stories from Hindu classics, which instilled in her a sense of duty, right conduct, bravery and other desired qualities in a person.

In 1921, boycott of foreign clothes was a major theme of the Satyagrah movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. Indira was a little child but had a clear memory of it. She recalled being excited and jubilant when she saw the large piles of expensive foreign clothes gathered and burnt on her family’s house grounds.

Both Motilal and Jawaharlal were imprisoned for six month following the Prince of Wales’s visit to India. The police arrived at Anand Bhawan to confiscate valuables from the house in lieu of the fine, which they

Indira Gandhi

refused to pay. Five years old Indira did not tolerate what she saw and yelled and screamed at the policemen.

She remembered later that whenever her father was at home, she along with her mother sat down with him to read the Ramayan, the Bhagavad Gita or the Mahabharat. Although she did not understand the Sanskrit text, it was soothing to hear stories from them.

Education - The political activities of her parents and the social unrest in the country influenced her early education. Initially, private tutors taught her at home. On her mother’s request, Jawaharlal who was in jail organised her admission to the Modern School in Prayagraj. It was a nationalist school whose ideals agreed with the Congress ideology of the time.

Motilal preferred the English system school. He removed her from the Modern School and sent her to St Cecilia’s Convent School. Indira did not like its social and teaching environment. When Jawaharlal was informed of her admission to the Convent School, he objected. She was withdrawn from the school and private tutors were arranged for her at home.

In March 1926, Jawaharlal took his wife Kamala to Europe for medical treatment. Indira accompanied them. Kamala’s treatment continued for over one year. During this period, Indira was enrolled in the L’Ecole International School in Geneva, Switzerland. Later she joined the Ecole Novelle in Bex, Geneva. In mid 1927, Indira returned to Prayagraj with her parents. She was enrolled to St Mary’s Convent School, where she continued her study for three years. A private tutor taught her Hindi.

She along with her family members had met Mahatma Gandhi and was impressed by his ideas and programs. She expressed a desire to contribute to his struggles. On his advice, she initiated the Bal Charkha Sangh with other children of her locality. It became a part of the Gandhi Charkha Sangh.

She organised the Vanar Sena of young children based on the model of the monkey army in the Ramayan to help adults during the Salt Satyagrah. She continued her convent school as well as the Vanar Sena tasks. Her grandfather suddenly became seriously ill. Jawaharlal was released from jail to be beside his father. Motilal passed away in February 1931. Jawaharlal went to Sri Lanka with his family on a holiday in April 1931 to relieve strains of his work and recover emotionally from his father’s death. Indira accompanied them. On their return to India, they visited regions of

south India. During this visit, Indira became aware of the term caste and untouchability.

Upon returning to Prayagraj, most of the family members including Indira’s mother were arrested and imprisoned. Jawaharlal was very concerned about Indira and her education. On Gandhi’s advice, she was admitted to the Pupil’s Own School at Pune in May 1931. She sat for the matriculation examination through the Pupil’s Own School at Vile Parle, Mumbai and passed it in 1934.

After completing her schooling, Indira travelled to Kashmir on holiday and from there she went to Kolkata where her father was in prison and her mother was being treated for a medical condition.

Her parents decided to send Indira to Shantiniketan for further studies. In July 1934, Kamala accompanied her to Shantiniketan and saw her settled. Indira completed a full academic year at Shantiniketan.

In May 1935, the doctors treating Kamala advised to take her to Germany for consultation and treatment. Jawaharlal was in jail so Indira had to leave Shantiniketan. She accompanied by a doctor relative took Kamala to Europe, where she was admitted to a sanatorium in the Black Forest region of Germany. In September, Kamala’s health deteriorated and Jawaharlal was released from jail so that he could be with his wife. After Jawaharlal came to Germany, Indira was sent to her old school in Bex, Geneva. Kamala’s condition did not improve. She was shifted to a sanatorium in Lausanne, Switzerland where she died on 26 February 1936. Indira continued her

Bhawan. The couple had two sons named Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.

After independence, Indira helped her father as his unofficial personal assistant. With him, she travelled wherever he visited and attended meetings and met heads of states.

She became a member of the Congress Working Committee in February 1955 and the president of the All India Youth Congress in 1956. In February 1959, Indira was elected president of the Congress. She was associated with the Union Government’s decision to dismiss the communist led Kerala state government. She was elected to be a member of the Executive Board of the UNESCO in 1960.

On September 8, 1960, her husband Feroze Gandhi passed away after a heart attack. Feroze’s body was cremated with Hindu rites. Indira had ensured that Parsi rites were performed over the dead body before it was taken to the cremation ground.

studies at Bex and then was admitted to the Badminton School in Bristol, England. She matriculated from there and joined the Somerville College, Oxford University. She actively participated in Indian students’ activities and became a member of the Indian National Congress.

Family & politics - By the start of 1941, she had decided to return to India for good without completing her studies at Oxford. Feroze Gandhi, who later became her husband, also lived in England, and joined on her return journey. Feroze belonged to the Parsi community. He was born on 12 September 1912. His father Jehangir Faredoon Gandhi and mother Rattimai were settled in Mumbai. His aunt, a highly qualified surgeon of Prayagraj, had adopted him as her son. While a student, he participated in Congress activities and visited Anand Bhawan for party related activities. Since then he had known Indira.

Feroze loved Indira and she accepted him. He formally proposed to her and they had decided to get married. They arrived in India in April 1941. Indira apprised her father who was in jail of her decision to marry Feroze. After his release from the prison, Jawaharlal tried to dissuade her and finally suggested she consult Mahatma Gandhi. On receiving approval from Gandhi, Indira married Feroze Gandhi on March 26, 1942. The wedding was solemnised according to Hindu Vedic rituals. After the wedding, she became known as Indira Gandhi.

During the Quit India movement, Indira was arrested in September 1942 and imprisoned for nine months. After release from the jail, Indira and Feroze started living in Anand

princes were abolished under her leadership. She argued for the termination based on equal rights for all citizens.

The Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation that specified mutual strategic cooperation was signed between India and the Soviet Union in August 1971.

In the 1971 IndoPakistani war, India secured a decisive victory that resulted in the formation of Bangladesh, an independent country. The people hailed Indira Gandhi as Goddess Durga at the time.

India conducted its first successful nuclear weapons test known as Operation Smiling Buddha, also known as Pokhran-I in 1974. The project demonstrated India’s emergence as a nuclear power. The first space satellite Aryabhatt designed by the Indian Space Research Organisation was launched from a Soviet Cosmodrome in April 1975.

Prime Minister - After Nehru’s death, Lal Bahadur Shastri was elected the next prime minister of India. Indira Gandhi was appointed a member of the Rajya Sabha and became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. In January 1966, Lal Bahadur Shastri unexpectedly died. Indira Gandhi was elected leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party and was sworn in as the prime minister of India.

During the first year of her leadership, dominant party leaders tried to sway her to implement their own agenda. In the 1967 general election, Congress won with a reduced majority in Lok Sabha. Following the election, she started pursuing socialist policies, despite opposition from many senior leaders.

Difference between factions increased during the presidential election. She supported an independent candidate against the party candidate for the position of the President of India. The announcement of nationalisation of major banks was made without consulting the finance minister. Disagreements between party elders and the prime minister resulted in a split of the Congress party. As a result, Indira lost her majority in both houses of Parliament but she remained in power with support from other parties.

In the next general election in 1971, Indira’s Congress party gained an absolute majority in the parliament despite the grand alliance of opposition parties. Indira’s election manifesto of “Garibi Hatao” or remove poverty was more effective than the opposition’s “Indira Hatao” or remove Indira. Opposition leaders decried the election.

The same year, Indira Gandhi incorporated Sikkim into India, after a referendum in which a majority of Sikkim’s population voted to join India.

Opposition to her rule was gaining momentum. In June 1975, the Prayagraj High Court invalidated the result in Gandhi’s constituency on the grounds of electoral malpractices, holding her responsible.

Indira Gandhi responded by declaring a state of emergency, suspending democracy and outlawing political opposition. Democracy was restored in 1977 and Indira Gandhi was defeated. A coalition of opposition parties called the Janata Party formed the government but could not complete the full term.

In the 1980 general election, Indira’s Congress gained an absolute majority in the parliament. She became prime minister again. A personal tragedy occurred in June 1980 when her younger son Sanjay died in an air accident.

The nation was facing unrest in some regions. The influx of refugees from neighbouring countries was creating troubles in the northeast. Anti-national elements in the Punjab were directing their activities from religious centres. In June 1984, Operation Blue Star was launched to remove them from the Harmandir Sahib complex in Amritsar.

On 31 October 1984, Indira stepped out of her official residence to participate in a TV interview. Suddenly her two bodyguards shot bullets into her, killing her on the spot. The triumphant life of a notable Indian came to an end.

Nrsiḿhaḿ bhiiśańaḿ bhadraḿ

Nrsim ham bhiiśańaḿ bhadraḿ.

Nrsiḿha is bhiiśańa, “terrible”. Why terrible? He scolds and punishes considerably. In order to carry out ordinary administration, one has to be strict. And to administer the whole universe, one has to be terrible. A little fear is also essential. Then all will do their work. Yes, the love should be more than the fear, but there must be fear also. It is said in Hindi, Binu bhay hoin na piriti –“No fear, no love.”

Take the sun. The sun has to do its duty punctually in all seasons. It cannot delay, it has to do it. It has no holiday. It feels fear.

Bhiiśasmádvayuhpavate bhiiśodeti suryah bhiiśasmadágnishcendrashca; mrtyuh dhávati paiṋcamah tasmáducyate bhiiśanamiti. –atharvaveda

[Out of fear of Him the wind blows, the sun rises on time. Out of fear of Him the fire-god, the moon-god, the god of energy and the god of death carry out their duties faithfully. This is why He is called Bhiiśańam, The Terrible.]

Parama Puruśa has been called bhiiśańa [fearful] in this shloka. This is because “out of fear of Him the sun rises, the wind blows.”

One of the Sanskrit names for “wind” is anila. In Sanskrit, anila means “not stationary”, “moving”. (There is a similar

Sanskrit word, aniila, meaning “not blue”.) “The wind has to blow, the fire has to burn, Indra(6)

has to work.” All are working according to their natures. It is all because of the fear of

Parama Puruśa. Mrtyuh dhávati paiṋcamah – “Death reaches the right person at the right time.” It goes into the palace and into the hut. It has to go, no one can stop it. It does its work out of fear of Parama Puruśa. Death also fears Him.

Nrsiḿham bhiiśańaḿ bhadram. “Nrsiḿha is bhiiśańa, but He is bhadra too.” Bhadra means “good”, “gentle”. He is a gentleman. He is one of the family members.

Mrtyurmrtyu namámyaham.

“If salutation is to be paid to anyone, it is to be paid to Him. He is the death of death, because death fears Him as much as you fear death. Just as death is threatening to living beings, so Parama Puruśa is threatening to death.”

There is another meaning of mrtyurmrtyu. Normally a person is born and dies, and this goes on and on – life follows death, and death life. But if a person takes the shelter of Parama Puruśa, that person dies a final death and is never reborn. Therefore Parama Puruśa is “the death of death”. That death is the last death. So if salutation is to be paid, it is to be paid to Him alone – Tamekaḿ namámah.

How to pay salutations to Parama Puruśa? Namastubhyam or namaste. Namah plus tubhyam make up namastubhyam,

and namah plus te make up namaste – “We do namah to You.” To jiivas [unit beings], it is namaskára – short for Namah karomi – “I greet, I salute.” Here there is no tubhyam or te, that is, “you”. To jiivas, namaste or namastubhyam should not to be said; namaskára should be said. But to Parama Puruśa you can say anything you like – namaste, namastubhyam, namaskára. And if you do not wish to say either namaste or namaskára, it does not matter. After all He is only a member of your own family.

Dear students, what are your future aspirations?

tHE content of this article is taken from the satsang (spiritual discourse) of H.H. Sant Shri Asharamji Bapu. Swami Vivekananda addressed the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in September 1893. A hundred years after him, Pujya Bapu ji addressed the same Parliament in September 1993 and the whole parliament reverberated with the chanting of Hari Om. Both of these worldrenowned spiritual leaders addressed the audience for a much longer period than the given time and the audience were absorbed in listening to them.

To save the youth who are being ruined due to the lustful festivals like valentine’s day, in 2007 Pujya Bapu ji-initiated celebrations of Matri-Pitri Pujan Diwas (Parents’ worship day) on 14th February. Pujya Bapu ji felt that, due to the blind imitation of Western culture there has been a steep rise in the incidences of alcoholism, suicide, and other immoral activities, especially among the youth during the last week of December. To rescue the youth from this debauchery and denigration, Pujya Bapu ji came up with the idea of worshipping a sacred Tulsi plant (holy basil). So, with a view to awaken the cultural pride of India and to save the countrymen from mental slavery, in 2014, he initiated celebration of Tulsi Pujan Diwas on 25th December. Pujya Bapu ji has always emphasized the necessity to follow rich Indian culture and always said that it is

only the Indian culture and Sanatana dharma which can give the world true happiness & peace.

Dear readers, in this article Pujya Bapu ji talks about cultivating virtue and avoiding vice. Pujya Bapu ji advises that to attract positive experiences, one must first offer positivity to others.

No person can be a complete sinner in all parts of his being; even the vilest person has some virtues. It is the part of your virtues that inspire you to hear spiritual talks and read spiritual literature for your good and it is because of any sin that even after hearing and reading such words, you aren't able to put it into practice. If you resolve firmly then there's no one who can stop you from practising righteousness in conduct and giving up evil practice. You are shackled by overindulging in wrong practices but you can remove them by doing good practice.

LEArn tO OFFEr ‘gOOd'

If you desire respect, love, affectionate behaviour or a coveted object from others then you should seize an opportunity to give them respect, rights, affection or objects that they desire. You will be able to get something from others only if you keep giving the same to them in your capacity. There are some paupers and poor fellows in this world who have no good objects or words of affection and respect in form of sweet speech for others. Such folk

have no merits of past life to their credit. While some meritorious folk are endowed with love for others right from the beginning. Some folk who have the mental attitude or disposition of giving, have many things to give and they keep giving. Some are continuously giving auspicious, good and nice things whilst others hurt people by hurling the inauspicious and bad at others.

Once, an opponent of a saint was hurling abuse at him at his face but the saint said nothing and just stood there. Further incensed, the person spat on the saint. Even then, the saint stood still. The wicked person asked, “Why are you still standing here?" The saint replied, “I am waiting here to receive whatever you have in store for me. Please give it all to me right now - don't hold anything back for later." Some saints remove the vices of others by forbearing (their maltreatment), and sometimes remove their vices by admonishing them and make them pure. How compassionate the saints are! To give inauspicious, unpleasant, and impure is a sin. To give auspicious, pleasant and pure is a virtue.

IdEntIFyIng VIrtuE

And SIn

Whether you are a child or a youth, you are at least meritorious enough to read or hear things at present that are beneficial to you. You understand also whether you are expending your merits by enjoying pleasures or accumulating merits by rendering service to others. Those whose minds are cleansed through their merits do not oppose people indulging in wicked and base acts, or great respectable persons and scholars.

Those who are dimwitted or aren't aware of merits and are driven by their sins: such folk spend their lives opposing rules

and regulations. Such folk spoil walls and corners of staircases by spitting wherever they feel like. They travel in groups in trains without purchasing tickets. Pull the chain to stop the train when they want to disembark. It causes inconvenience to other passengers, but the habitual sinner egotist does not bother about the adversities and pain he will face in the future. Meritorious people right from their childhood do not indulge in any act that may cause harm to others.

Those people having good sense due to merits of past life politely prevent people from indulging in acts contrary to rules and regulations. When these folk don't listen, meritorious folk try to salvage (improve or prevent it from further deterioration) the situation as best as they can. It is a sin for a student to waste time or spend beyond the means of his guardian, or when his guardian has to take a loan or accept bribes to fund his education due to less income.

The characteristics of an ideal, meritorious student are these. He keeps his needs to a bare minimum; minimizes his expenditure; wears plain clothes; keeps his area and clothes clean, takes pure sattvic food, and believes in God. The more merit one accumulates through selfless physical service in past life, the healthier a body one is blessed with in the next life. The more merit one accumulates through polite, gentle and respectful speech in past life, the more respect and love one receives for his virtues and good behaviour from childhood in the present life. The more merit one accumulates through charity with humility in past life more one gets wealth and a beautiful form in the next life.

Being averse to true education and inspired by bad education, a student who snatches something

from the seller without paying its price or travels without a ticket incurs sin. Eventually having to suffer for these sins, manifold the harm caused to others. Similarly, students having no merits of past lives to their credit who do not follow true education and become sportive or addicts under the influence of bad company, who entertain immoral thoughts and look lustfully are only accumulating more sins.

The student who makes the depraved and addicted students righteous and self-restrained through his good company earns merits. Diverting a student from his studies to take him to drama or cinema is a sin, while diverting a student from watching cinema and drama to his studies is a merit. Instigating someone in acts that cause downfall is a grave sin while inspiring someone to auspicious acts is a great merit. If you ever covet for someone's possessions or jealous of him, then remind yourself that “This is a sinful tendency caused by the influence of bad education and bad company."

When you are overcome by greed or lust due to someone's beautiful form or you feel yourself getting enraged because of some adversity, or when you have ill feelings towards someone or start thinking ill of someone or when you arc slandering someone, you should instantly remember - “This is an attack of sin" and then on seeing that sinful tendency, if you stop wasting your time and energy on it, you will be saved from nurturing the sin, and you can use the same energy in meritorious acts.

There are some paupers and poor fellows in this world who have no good objects or words of affection and respect in form of sweet speech for others. Such folk have no merits of past life to their credit. The more merit one accumulates through polite, gentle and

respectful speech in past life, the more respect and love one receives for his virtues and good behaviour from childhood in the present life.

BE BrAVE And MArCH AHEAd

Be brave and march ahead; this verily is your grandeur.

Be brave and march ahead; this verily is the song of heroes. Do not even think of stopping; don't take untimely rest. Be desireless in true sense, charge not even merit (for works). Be brave and march ahead; this is what the Lord Has said (in the Gita). Take misery (from others), never give it (to others). Give joy (to others), never take it (from others). Arise, if you fall, take some rest but never be disappointed. Be brave and march ahead; this alone is the mark of progress. Let it go what goes; let it come what comes. Let the mind weep and sing in its voice. Be brave and march ahead; this verily is the knowledge imparted by Guru. Being at true ascetic and fortunate lover of Truth, Do not desire anything from the world. Be brave and march ahead; this alone is selfrespect, says ‘Pathik' Be brave and march ahead; this verily is the song of heroes. Be brave and march ahead; this verily is your grandeur.

SHAnKArA: A rOLE MOdEL FOr StudEntS

An ideal child has a pure and candid heart. What he says is exactly what he thinks and even acts according to that thought alone. His frankness and simplicity itself draw people to him. An ideal child never forgets his aim of life, once he has fixed his mind on it. Right after having set his goal, he gets into action for the fulfillment thereof. He is firm and wise and is not shaken by any condition. Adorned with all these pious attributes, Shankara was a prodigy. He was still a child when his father breathed his last, giving him a very close vision of death. The seed of dispassion sprouted in his tender heart at a young age. By the age of about 7, he had already completed the study of the four Vedas and Vedangas (limbs of vedas). How deeply absorbed he was! Such an exemplary talent can be developed by just any child, only if he subdues his senses, concentrates his mind, and becomes an aspirant of knowledge as Shankara did.

THE GREAT SAINT OF JEELAAN THE CARDINAL LEADER OF THE AWLIYAA AL-GHAUTH AL-A'ZAM AS-SAYYID ABDUL QADIR AL-JEELANI (RA)

SHEIKH Abdul Qadir

Jelani was a noted Hanbali preacher, Sufi sheikh and the eponymous founder of the Qadiri Sufi order (silsila). He was born in 1st Ramadan AH 470 (about AD 1077) in the Persian province of Gilan (Iran) south of the Caspian sea. His contribution and renown in the sciences of Sufism and Sharia was so immense that he became known as the spiritual pole of his time, al-Gauth al Azam (the “Supreme Helper” ). His writings were similar to those of al-Ghazali in that they dealt with both the fundamentals of Islam and the mystical experience of Sufism.

pArEntS And EArLy LIFE

Abdul Qadir Jilani was a Sufi master and Syed (descendant of the Prophet Muhammad saw) from both his father and mother. His father Abu Saleh Jangidost, was an illustrious and Godfearing man. Once while engrossed in meditation by the bank of a river he saw an apple floating down the river. He picked it up and ate it. It struck to him that he ate the apple without paying for it so he set out in search of the owner, on the bank of the river and at last reached the owner of the apple orchard “Abdullah Somai” whom he requested to tell him the price of the apple, Abdullah Somai replied that it was an expensive thing. Syed Abu Saleh replied that he had not much by way of worldly material but he, could serve him for compensation.

Abdullah Somai then asked him to work for a year in the orchard. In course of time the duration was extended several times. In the end Abdullah Somai admitted that he had served him in excess of the price and desired to reward him.

Abu Saleh hesitated in accepting it but when Abdullah Somai persisted, he relented. He said he had a daughter, blind of eyes, handicapped of hands and feet and wanted to give her in marriage to him. In this way Abu Saleh was married to Abdullah Somai’s daughter, Syeda Fatimah. To his astonishment found her wondrously beautiful and wholesome. He complained to his father-in-law that he found her exactly the opposite to what he had described her. Abdullah Somai insisted on the truthfulness of his statement. She was blind because she had not seen any Ghair Mehram (a man who could marry her). She was mute because she

had not uttered a word repugnant to the Shariah (Islamic law). She was deaf because she had not heard anything inconsistent with the Shariah. She was handicapped of hand and feet because she had never moved in the direction of evil.

Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani’s father died soon after and the young orphan was reared up by his mother and his grandfather, Abdullah Somai.

AduLt LIFE

At the age of 18 he went to Baghdad on AH 488 (1095 AD), where he pursued the study of Hanbali law under several teachers. His mother sewed 40 gold coins in his quilt so that he might spend them when needed. The dacoits struck the caravan on the way, and looted all the travelers of their belongings. They asked him what he had. He replied that he had 40 gold coins. The dacoits took his reply for a joke and took him to their chief, who asked him the same question and he again replied that he had 40 gold coins. He demanded him to show, upon whom he tore away, the quilt and produced the gold coins. He was surprised and asked him why he had given the hidden gold coins when he could have kept them hidden. Young Abdul Qadir Jilani replied that he was travelling to Baghdad to receive education and his mother had instructed him to speak the truth. This left a deep effect on the chief of the dacoits and he gave up looting.

Abdul Qadir received lessons on Islamic Jurisprudence from Abu Said Ali al-Mukharrimi, Hadith from Abu-Bakrabin- Muzaffar, and commentary (tafseer) from the renowned commentator, Abu Muhammad Jafar.

In Sufism, his spiritual instructor was Shaikh Abu’l-Khair Hammad. From him, he received his basic training, and with his help he set out on the spiritual journey. Abu Shuja’ was also a disciple of Shaikh Hammad, once he said: “Shaikh Abdul Qadir was in the company of Shaikh Hammad, so he came and sat in front of him, observing the best of good manners, until he stood up and took his leave. I heard Shaikh Hammad say, as soon as Shaikh Abdul Qadir had left: ‘This non-Arab has a foot that will be raised, when the proper time comes, and placed upon the necks of the saints of that time. He will surely be commanded

to say: This foot of mine is upon the neck of every saint of Allah. He will surely say it, and the necks of all the saints of his age will surely be bent at his disposal.’”

Hazrat Junayd Baghdadi (died AD 910), who died about 167 years before the birth of Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, predicted about him on one occasion, when he was performing meditation & during that he said: “His foot will be over all Saints’ necks.” After finishing meditation, his disciples asked him about his words, he replied: “One Sufi would be born in the future, who would be greater than all saints.” Thus, Shaikh Hammad proved the words of Hazrat Junayd as right. The historians says that, later Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani also repeated the same words on many occasion by himself.

After completion of education, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani abandoned the city of Baghdad, and spent twenty-five years as a wanderer in the desert regions of Iraq as a recluse. He was over fifty years old by the time he returned to Baghdad, in AH 521 (AD 1127), and began to preach in public. His hearers were profoundly affected by the style and content of his lectures, and his reputation grew and spread through all sections of society. Not only Muslims, but also Jews and Christians, not only caliphs and viziers but also farmers, merchants and traders allegedly altered their lives in response to Abdul Qadir’s perorations. He moved into the school belonging to his old teacher al-Mukharrimii, there he engaged himself in teaching. Soon he became popular with his pupils. In the morning he taught hadith and tafseer,

and in the afternoon held discourse on mysticism and the virtues of the Qur’an. The number of students increased so much that the seminary could no more contain them. He, therefore, decided to extend the premises of the seminary. The students and the people willingly came forward with their wholehearted contributions. The campus buildings were ready in AH 528 and thereafter it came to be known as Madarsaie-Qadriya.Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani was a Non-Arab (ajami), so he wasn’t fluent in Arabic and was having some difficulties because of it.

Once The Prophet Muhammad (s) came to him in a dream, before the time of the midday prayer (Zuhr), and he said to him: “O my dear son, why do you not speak out?” He replied: “O dear father, I am a Non-Arab man. How can I speak fluently in the classical Arabic language of Baghdad?” Holy Prophet said: “Just open your mouth!” He opened his mouth, and The Holy Prophet put his saliva mubarak seven times in his mouth. A few moments later, Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib also came & did the same to him six times. And from that time, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani spoke classical Arabic language with fluency, his memory increased and he felt some great positive spiritual changes in him.

Once some one asked Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani about Mansur Al-Hallaj, he replied: “His claim extended too far, so the scissors of the Sacred Law (Shari’a) were empowered to clip it.”

He busied himself for forty years in the service of the Islam from AH 521 to 561. During this period hundreds embraced Islam because of him and organized several teams to go abroad for the purpose. He arrived in Indian subcontinent in AD 1128, and stayed at Multan (Pakistan). He died in AH 561 (AD 1166) at the age of 91 years, and was buried in Baghdad.

“My Foot is on the Neck of All Awliyaa”

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani uttered these words from the pulpit in Baghdad. All awliya, present and non-present, bowed their heads in submission.Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani’s foot is on the neck of all awliya.

The Muslim believes

that Allah the Almighty has chosen some of His servants to be His devotees, making them act in obedience, and honouring them with His Love, and giving them of from His grace. He is their Supporter, loves them and draws them nearer to Him. In turn, they are His devotees who love and revere Him. They do whatever He commands them and recommend others to do the same. They refrain from whatever He forbids and advise others to refrain from it. They love what He loves and hate what He hates. If they ask Him, He gives them. If they seek His aid, He aids them. If they seek refuge in Him, He grants them asylum. They are the men of piety and belief, dignity and good news in both this life and in the Hereafter. Each pious believer is one of the Awliyaa' of Allah. They differ in only grades proportional to their belief and piety. The more one's share of piety and belief, the higher his rank and dignity before Allah. Those with the most grace are the Prophets and the Messengers of Allah, then, the believers. The Muslim believes in all of the phenomenon and miracles that Allah causes to occur by their hands. Events such as the increase of otherwise little amounts of food, curing the diseased and the ill, crossing oceans (without navigational means), and fire that causes no harm etc. It is important to differentiate between Al-Kaaramah -the phenomenon (which is given to the devotee) and Al-Mu'jizah - the miracle (which is given to the Messenger). The miracle is accompanied by a challenge while the phenomenon is not. Among the greatest phenomenon is abiding in obedience by doing what is commanded in the Shari'ah (Islamic Law) and staying away from what is prohibited.

Textual Proofs 1. The statements of Allah the Almighty such as:

"No doubt! Verily, the Awliya' of Allah, no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve. Those who believed, and used to fear Allah much (by abstaining from evil deeds and sins and by doing righteous deeds). For them are glad tidings, in the life of the present world, and in the Hereafter. No change can there be in the Words of Allah. This is indeed the supreme success." (10:62-64)

And: {Every time Zakariyya entered AlMihraab (a place to pray)

to (visit) her, he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: '0 Maryam! From where have you gotten this?' She said, 'This is from Allah.'} (3:37)

And: {Allah is the Wali (Protector) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light.} (2:257)

And: {And they are not its (Al-Masjid Al-Haram's) guardians? None can be its guardians except the pious.} (8:34)

And: {Verily, Yunus was one of the Messengers. When he ran to the laden ship. Then he (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers. Then a (big) fish swallowed him as he had done an act worthy of blame. Had he not been of them who glorify Allah, He would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) until the Day of Resurrection.} (37:139-144)

And: {Verily, my Wali (Protector) is Allah Who has revealed the Book (the Qur'an), and He protects the righteous.} (7:196)

And: {Thus it was, that We might turn away from him evil and immorality. Surely, he was one of Our chosen (guided) servants.} (12:24)

And: {Certainly, you shall have no authority over My servants.} (15:42)

And: {Then cried unto her from below her, saying: 'Grieve not: your Lord has provided a water stream under you. And shake the trunk of date palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon you. So eat and drink and be glad.’} (19:2426)

And:{We (Allah) said: 'O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrahim!' And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers.} (21:69-70)

And: {Do you think that people of the Cave and the Inscription (the news or the names of the people of the Cave) were a wonder among Our Signs? (Remember) when the young men fled for refuge (from their disbelieving folk) to the Cave. They said: 'Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!' Therefore, We covered up their (sense of) hearing (causing them to go in deep sleep) in the Cave for a number of years. Then We raised them up (from their sleep).} (18:912)

"Whoever shows hostility to My Wali, I proclaim war against him. My servant does not draw near to Me by anything more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him. My servant continues to draw near to Me by the voluntary deeds, until I love Him. When I love him, I will be his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his feet with which he walks. If he asks Me, I will surely give him. And if he seeks refuge in Me, I will surely give him refuge."

(Agreed upon)

The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said: "Indeed Allah has men, such that if one of them

swears that a thing will be done, it will be done."

(Agreed upon with the wording "servants" instead of "men.")

And: "Among the nations before you there were Muhaddathun (people who were inspired, though they were not Prophets). And if there is any such a person among my followers, it would be 'Umar" (Agreed upon)

He (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) also said, "A woman was nursing her infant when she saw a man mounting a high horse, she said: 'O Allah! Make my infant like that man.' The infant looked at the man and said: 'O Allah! Do not make me the like of him.'"

(Agreed upon)

Allah (a'zza wa jall) mentioned the three people

that were trapped in the cave, petitioning Allah by their good deeds, so Allah opened the way for them and they escaped safely after petitioning Him by their good deeds. (Agreed upon)

In the Hadeeth about monk and the boy, the boy threw a stone killing the beast that was preventing the people from passing. Thus the people were able to pass. This also was a miracle showing the dignity of the boy. When the king tried to kill the boy, he could not. He threw him from the top of a high mountain, he did not die. Then he threw him in the sea but he emerged walking out of it. This also was a miracle dignifying the righteous boy. (Al-Bukhari)

3. Thousands of scholars

and witnesses narrate the phenomenon’ of countless number of individuals.[1]

Like the report that says that the angels used to shake hands with 'Imran bin Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him. That Salman Al-Farisi and Abu Ad-Darda' were eating in a bowl and they heard the bowl or the food glorifying Allah. While Khubayb was a captive of the pagans in Makkah, he was seen eating grapes, while there were no grapes in Makkah.

Al-Bara' bin 'Azib, may Allah be pleased with him, is one of those who if he swore (by Allah) that anything would be done, it was done. When it was the day of Qaadisiyyah, he petitioned Allah that the

Muslims overpower the polytheists and that he be the first martyr of the battle.

It was thus 'Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, was delivering the Friday sermon on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) in Al-Madinah, and behold! He was heard saying: "O Sariyah! The mountain!" He repeated it twice directing the leader of the army to a better position.

Sariyah, who was far from Al-Madinah, heard the call and retreated to the mountain. The army was victorious. When Sariyah returned to Al-Madinah, he told 'Umar and the Companions what he heard.

Al-'Ala' Al-Hadrami, may Allah be pleased

with him, used to pray: "O All-Knower, All-Wise, the Most High, the Most Great!" His supplications were responded to. Once he crossed the sea with a troop yet the saddles of their horses did not get wet.

Al-Hassan Al-Basri prayed to Allah against a man who used to hurt him; instantly, the man died.

The donkey of a man from Nakh'a died while he was travelling. The man performed Wudoo' (ablution), prayed two Rak'ahs and called upon Allah. And behold! Allah resurrected his donkey for him and the man carried his luggage on it. There are countless cases of phenomenon witnessed by thousands, even millions of people.

In your education, you will have good planetary support which will help you to get back on the progressive track. The planets are likely to motivate you to take interest in some additional courses which can build your knowledge.

As the month begins, Mercury will help you to use your natural talent tremendously and will also help you to score dozens of points over your competitors. However, Saturn will slow down the speed of your financial growth though inflow of money keeps on moving at a steady pace. Venus foretells that gifting something from the heart to your beloved will bring warmth and harmony in your life. As the month advances, Mars may bring some sweeping changes in your status at your work place. It could change the way you see your business. Act on it quickly to get ahead in race of success. Your money management will be good hence your financial status may get better. In your love life, go for what you want more in your life now as opportunities will be awaiting you. Saturn demands to you to be ready to accept the new challenges and tasks in your studies. Amid some confusion created by the North Node, you will be able to triumph in your profession during the latter part of month. The favourable planets will bring some opportunities for lasting financial gains. The impact of Venus will prove positive in creating a meaningful relation with someone who will share in your ideals and views. The planets may get the success that you deserve in your studies. Jupiter will bring some encouraging opportunities in your profession as the month advances. But you must be equipped to handle some tough challenges around the mid of this month. If you are in business, you may not get desired success in striking it big. Venus suggests that you are likely to buy costly gadgets and spend a substantial amount on luxuries of life. The desire to flaunt your affluence will be the driving force here. The latter half may bring some romantic and thrilling moments to enjoy. This can be a better phase for your love life and relationship. Mercury will help you to communicate your ideas smartly and may also share your knowledge to others very efficiently which may help you to get success in your studies. But, it may bring some fluctuations in your health and hence there will be some phases when you feel your energy level low. If you use your tact and smartness, you may find yourself better placed in your career by the end of this month. You may have good planetary support to enhance your financial potential as well. You are likely to make good progress in your education and related endeavors as your efforts shall be favoured by Jupiter and Mercury. But your energy levels may not up to the mark around the month end.

As the month begins, you may feel sorted enough to make right career choices due to the support of Mercury. A good opportunity is likely to come knocking at your door. However, there may be some waiting period involved here. Use the period to review and revise your monetary strategies. Venus seems suitable for love relationship. Around the end of this month, some of your old connections will be revived, which will help you to quite an extent in your business, indicates Mercury. You are likely to get some excellent opportunities to empower your financial strength. South Node indicates that dilemma will be acute, while sorting out issues in personal close relationships. Some old relations shall fade away, giving way to the new ones.

You will have enough planetary support to try to work on your most ambitious projects now. Do not get carried away especially if you are doing business. Venus will favor you hence you are going to feel the stability in terms of your money. New ideas and new concepts can lead you into new realms in your studies. The period around the mid of this month looks promising for job as well as business. You could acquire new clients. You may also get some important position in job. However, Mars indicates that you need to keep an eye over every small things as you will be facing tough competition as well. Grab new opportunities to enhance your financial strength. Your love prospects will be exciting this time around. If you are not in relationship, you may have strong favor of Venus to find a fun partner and experience the intimacy you so wanted. You will gain financial stability in your life gradually but you need to remain cautious as the impact of South Node can be detrimental. Venus will bless you hence existing love will grow stronger if you are already in a relationship. If you are not in a relationship, there will be chances to start a fresh relationship. A short-term period of severe fatigue and even nervous exhaustion can be felt during the ending part of this month. Also, Mars may not allow you to focus on your studies. Saturn will demand you to act with patience and also with the positive approach. The better you feel, the better you will do, that is the message for you from the cosmos.

As the month begins, Saturn will make your working conditions bit challenging but future growth prospects will keep you preoccupied. Gradually, it would bring some moments of amusement and bliss and it could also lead you towards financial gains. On the personal life front, it would be better to go slow in matters of new relationships. Mars is going to bring in a lot of disturbance in your studies. As the month advances, Mars may bring an encouraging opportunity to make progress at your career front. If you are in business, the period around the mid of this month can be a good time for you to explore new horizons and possibly add new items in your product list. You shall get some encouraging opportunities to boost your earnings. Mars will make you more outgoing, positive and energetic. A lot of positive energy may help you make good progress in your education. Your health may remain good barring some minor fluctuations in your energy levels this time around. The latter half may bring with some hurdles in your career. The period does not seem favourable for starting something new in your profession. The impact of North Node can be misleading. Refrain from borrowing or lending. Some stress or nervousness may bring unrest and likely to affect your energy levels as well. Saturn will demand strict discipline and focused approach in your work. Gradually, your career graph is likely to go up as the month approaches end. Mercury indicates a good time to formulate new strategies to increase your earnings.

The beginning of this month will be good for experimenting with new ideas. At the same time, there will be a lot of urgency in your approach to remove the blocks as Mars will bring energy. Also, investments done during this phase will bring good returns in future, suggests Jupiter. It looks romantic phase owing to a favorably placed Venus facilitating love and relationship. If you manage your time and resources well, you will make good progress in your studies. If you are suffering from any ailments, it will help you to recover fast. As the month advances, career prospects will be encouraging. However, Mars indicates a busy time for you with added pressure and responsibilities. And, the impact of South Node may bring some commitment pressure. The middle part of this month will be sensitive and tricky for your love life and relationship. The impact of shadow planets will make you anxious and somewhat uncertain about the future of your love life. You are likely to register major improvement in your health status during the latter half of this month. The latter part will be important for your career progression as your decision- making abilities may face the litmus test. But Jupiter would bring opportunities for growth along with increased materialistic rewards gradually. Venus may inspire you to reveal your deepest feelings but, under the influence of Mars, you will be very impulsive and more emotional than usual and that might disturb your relationship equations.

The impact of Mars in the beginning will be highly encouraging for career prospects. It is equally good phase if you are doing business. The stars for finances suggest exceptional money flow. But under the influence of North Node, the month may begin with some disruptions as family problems will engage your attention. But passion will take over your life as the month advances. Love will be in full swing and the period during the first half will be a time to enjoy. If you are appearing for competitive examinations, you will have to resort to more coaching though. The first half of month does not foretell any serious health afflictions. Whatever problems you might have been facing lately on the job front will be removed by the favourable impact of Jupiter around the mid of this month. If you are doing business, you may get opportunity to get some good orders from a high worth customer. And you will have enough monetary gains to cover your expenses. You will have excellent love prospects as the influences of the Venus will have a positive impact on your feelings. You will have good planetary support for your studies in but Saturn does not indicate bright future during the latter half of this month. The impact of Saturn will make you toil hard but it will not be rewarded adequately during the latter half. If you are doing business, you will be positioned well enough to manage the issues efficiently. Financially, things may improve gradually. Around the month end, the impact of North Node may not bring a pretty picture for your career. You have to struggle hard to achieve your targets.

As the month begins, Jupiter will help you start a wonderful journey of strong growth. If you are in business, it is likely to make your professional dreams come true. Now you will strive to overcome hurdles and hence financial gains will follow. Venus will offer you a unique experience in your love life which can be worth exploring. As the month advances, expect to receive a promotion and raise this time around. If you are in business, it will bring abundance and prosperity your way. Around the middle of this month, you will have some issues with your health. Your health must be your first priority no matter the situation you find yourself in. During the latter half, Saturn may make you feel temporarily stuck. But, you will be able to power through as the month advances. If you are in business, your unique and brilliant ideas can bring strong positive growth. You would recover all your pending dues in the previous times. The combined impact of Venus and Mars indicates that your powers of attraction will be running high. From around mid of this month, you are likely to start spending more time for studies. Around the month end, some major projects will likely come your way, but the impact of North Node can be disruptive hence be sure to rise to the new challenges. If you are in business, destiny may bring an exciting opportunity your way. Some financial gains from your old investments are also possible. The period around the month end will be the perfect time to take charge and try new things in your love life. However, it will be necessary for you to keep away from bad company in order to avoid unnecessary issues in your studies.

As the month begins, you will have major progress in your career. Mars may bring some fresh challenges though. If you are in business, this could be more difficult and some hurdles would make the daily tasks difficult. Venus will surely will keep your financial position solid and strong. Your love life will be exciting but your stubborn approach is likely to make your relationship vulnerable. As the month advances, Jupiter may bring some good opportunities your way. Some new opportunities for expansion may boost your prospects if you are doing business. You may get many opportunities on improving your earning and saving potential. Saturn may demand you to make some important decisions in your personal life around the mid of this month. There may be some disturbance at your educational front. Some seasonal impact can upset your health. Or due to your habit of going for spicy foods can disturb your stomach. During the latter half of month, amid problems, some long awaiting opportunity might come your way. But, it will be creating lots of confusions due to the impact of North Node. Hence you must proceed with caution. If you are doing business, you must also avoid making over ambitious attempts for expansion. Keep a tight leash on your expenses as there may be some commitment pressure. Under the influence of Mars, your tendency to argue with others over silly matters will be high which can disrupt the harmony of your love life. Mercury will help you to proceed with your studies with more confidence and great interest.

Mars indicates that the temptation to emotionally react at work is potent in the beginning of this month. If you are in business, you must not make any ambitious plans to expand. Venus will make you able to develop associations with people of status and those with influential social background. It will help you strengthen your social standing. Your performance in studies may remain excellent but, some uneasiness could lead to some fluctuations in your health. Due to support of transiting Mercury your intelligent moves and perfect timing shall strengthen your position as the month advances. The middle part of this month will be very important as it will open new avenues to find higher elevation in your career. Discussions related to any pending financial issues or deals may make you somewhat nervous or tense. But, the talks would prove to be fruitful. Venus is likely to have a positive impact on the way you live and feel. During the latter half, Mars is likely to help you to consolidate your position amid some stiff challenges. There can be some delays and difficulties in getting desired recognition in your profession. However, Saturn indicates that disturbance or some disputes regarding some old investment can make your task somewhat challenging. You are likely to be more attentive about your health and well-being that will help you to maintain your health. Jupiter will set you up for success around the end of this month. It will be beginning of a progressive phase if you are in business.

Mars is in somewhat difficult motions in the beginning of this month. During this time, career wise, you may not be able to be much productive in your tasks. If you are in business, you will need to focus more on your financial situations and gain more of selfconfidence. Your house, children and daily routine will demand more expenses for you. North Node may bring with it some issues in your relationship. You will have enough planetary support for your studies but you may remain engaged with some meaningless or irrelevant matters and hence you could not take advantage. Even though, there will be some respite from persistent health issues but if you have had any chronic ailments, Saturn will demand you to be vigilant about health during the first half of this month. As the month advances, Jupiter indicates a happy go lucky time for you. Your reputation and professional status get a boost. If you are in business, this period will make you very successful in your ventures. Now Saturn will demand you to develop your own system and wisdom to achieve financial prosperity and to maintain it. South Node could make you susceptible to ailments. Your career is going to be on a smooth sail during the latter half because of the supportive transit of Jupiter. If you are in business, this mostly indicates smooth phase. You may even be lucky enough to gain additional money. Venus may bring some refreshing experiences in your love life. Mars foretells that you will have good luck in finances around the month end. dear Editor, I noticed that the newspaper has changed its name from Brisbane to Australia. Does this mean that content specifically related to Brisbane will be reduced? How do you plan to accommodate coverage for a national audience? While I appreciate the broader focus,

She has been recognized for her advocacy work by prestigious publications like The London Daily and Fiji Sun (as well as SBS and ABC), using her platform to raise awareness about women's rights and the devastating impact of domestic violence. "Seema: The Film" is a testament to her commitment to social change, and its impactful message has garnered significant attention.

The film will be screened on November 9th in Brisbane, followed by screenings in Sydney. Catch "Seema: The Film" at Carissa George's Art Exhibition, held at Penrite Oil in Marsden. For more details, visit the Carissa George Art or Proverbs 31 Films pages on Facebook.
