Jaishankar and Chief Minister of India’s Odisha state, Shri Mohan Charan Majhi. Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, whose charge specifically includes Diaspora affairs was also present. The biennial PBD Convention is a flagship event of the Government of India as an important platform to engage with the Indians living overseas.

The 18th PBD Convention will be organized from 8th through 10th January 2025 at Bhubaneswar, capital of

Odisha state, in collaboration with the State Government of Odisha. The theme of 18th PBD Convention is "Diaspora’s contribution to a Viksit Bharat”. The convention will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. A Youth edition of PBD will be held in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, will confer the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards and preside over the Valedictory Session.

The launch of the official PBD website marks the commencement of online registration for participation in the PBD Convention 2025. The website will also facilitate reservation of

accommodation in Odisha and provide detailed information on PBD 2025. On the occasion of the formal launch of the website, Dr Jaishankar said Indian Government under the inspirational leadership of Prime Minister Modi has accorded the highest priority to the well being of more than 35 million strong Indian Diaspora. Prime Minister Modi’s regular interactions with the Diaspora during his official visits abroad and the unwavering support of the latter to India’s growth story are testimony to the strong bonds shared between India and its global community.

The External Affairs Minister expressed confidence that the Indian Diaspora will

continue to play an important role in India’s march towards a Viksit Bharat, i.e. fast developing and emerging India. The Chief Minister of Odisha welcomed Indian Diaspora overseas to visit Odisha. He hoped that they would be able to witness and appreciate the rich historical, cultural and spiritual heritage of Odisha, encouraging them to participate in large numbers.

Understanding the Queensland 491 Visa for Small Business Owners: A Pathway to Regional Australian Living IN an effort to encourage business growth and skilled migration in regional Queensland, the Queensland Government has introduced a specialized pathway under the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa, commonly known as the 491 visa, designed exclusively for small business owners. This pathway allows eligible applicants to establish and operate a business in designated regional Queensland, providing a compelling avenue toward potential permanent residency.

OVERVIEW OF THE QUEENSLAND 491 SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS PATHWAY The Queensland 491 visa – Small Business Owners pathway enables state nomination for those living and running a small business in regional Queensland. To qualify, applicants must meet the Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) requirements and those set by Queensland authorities.

The pathway is currently open for applications, providing a unique opportunity for business owners to contribute to the local economy while progressing toward Australian residency.

DEPARTMENT OF HOME AFFAIRS REQUIREMENTS To be eligible, applicants must fulfill key criteria set by the DoHA: • Points Requirement: A minimum score of 65 points on the points test, including state nomination points.

• Skills Assessment: Possess a positive skills assessment in a nominated occupation listed on the Home Affairs Legislative Instrument LIN 19/051.

• Age Limit: Be under 45 years old.

• English Language Proficiency: Meet at least a Competent level in English. For additional points, it’s recommended to take an English test even if from an exempt

country (such as the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, or New Zealand).

FEATURES OF THE QUEENSLAND 491 SMALL BUSINESS PATHWAY This pathway is tailored for migrants who are already residing in Queensland and managing a small business within designated regional areas. Key eligibility factors include: - Occupational Alignment: Applicants must hold an occupation listed in the LIN 19/051 instrument and have an active skills assessment for that occupation.

- Work and Study Status: Full-time work rights are essential, and applicants should not be currently studying.

The pathway offers two distinct options, each with unique criteria: Pathway 1: Purchase of an Existing Business • Business Acquisition: Purchase an existing, registered business in a regional area for a minimum of $100,000.

• Employment Requirement: Employ at least one Australian resident.

• Business Duration: The business must have been operational for at least six months before lodging an Expression of Interest (EOI).

Pathway 2: New Business Start-Up • Business Establishment: Start a new business and manage it consistently for at least two years.

• Profitability: The business must be profitable with a turnover of at least $200,000 in the twelve months preceding the application.

In both cases, applicants must complete an EOI on SkillSelect and submit a 491 – Small Business Owner Assessment Form to proceed with the visa application.

India to host World India proactively engaged for peace in Audio Visual Ukraine, West Asia Entertainment Summit

INDIAN External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said wars in Ukraine and West Asia have global implications and India is using diplomacy to engage with warring sides to explore peaceful resolutions.

Speaking at an interaction with the Indian community in Brisbane, Australia, Jaishankar said that India is using all available channels of diplomacy to bring warring sides to a dialogue for peace.

The Indian Minister said the Russia-Ukraine conflict as

125 countries of the Global South were afflicted in many ways by this war. Jaishankar said this was an important issue of discussions when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had travelled to Russia in July and to Ukraine in August. Modi met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in June and again in September, and held talks again with President Vladimir Putin in the Russian city of Kazan in October. Jaishankar said India was undertaking

proactive diplomacy.

Responding to questions, Jaishankar admitted that India`s role was now being understood and even appreciated by western powers.

Though earlier India`s efforts had met with skepticism. India received strong endorsement of the biggest sufferers among the Global South. Jaishankar admitted that Iran and Israel wouldn`t talk to each other directly. India was among a few countries trying to break that logjam.

INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced India will host the World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES) for the first time in February 2025. This places India in the top spot as an entertainment hub.

The summit between 5th and 9th February 2025 will bring together media and

entertainment leaders, as well as creative minds from across the globe, to discuss collaboration, innovation, and India’s growing influence in global content creation. Modi shared the exciting news during his monthly radio address, Mann Ki Baat. Modi said the summit is a big and bold step in positioning India as

a global hub for creative and content industries. Modi said the importance of the WAVES Summit should also be seen in the economic context, noting as the country inches becoming a five trillion dollar economy.

Modi highlighted the role of India’s youth in shaping the future of creative industries.

NRIs get some relief, Omar Abdullah sworn in some higher tax in as new Jammu & Kashmir India Budget 2024-25 Chief Minister CM JAMMU and Kashmir National Conferenxe leader Omar Abdullah is sworn in for the second time as Chief Minister after 2009.

It is strategically important to note that none of the elected members of the Indian National Congress, his biggest backer, took oath on 16 October 2024. The Congress said they would not joint government for now.

Surinder Kumar Choudhary, a prominent face from the Jammu region, took oath as Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) during a swearingin ceremony presided over

by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in Srinagar.

A total of five legislators, including Satish Sharma, Sakina Yatoo, Javid Dar, Surinder Kumar Choudhary and Javid Rana, were sworn-in for the Council of Ministers at Srinagar`s Sheri-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).

Mr. Choudhary had defeated BJP leader Ravinder Raina from Jammu`s Nowshera constituency. Omar said he was the last Chief Minister to serve a full six-year term.

He added that he will now be the first Chief Minister

of the Union territory of J & K. He did note that being a CM of a Union Territory is a different matter altogether with own challenges. The Union Territory of J and K has just 10 Ministerial berths, including Chief Minister. Several leaders of the INDIA bloc attended the swearing ceremony in Srinagar. Top leaders of the Congress, including Rahul

Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi, were present during the swearing in ceremony. Samajwadi Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and CPIM leader Prakash Karat were also present. Members of Parliament Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and Supriya Sule also attended the ceremony.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s highly anticipated first budget of the third term has given some relief some higher taxes to overseas Indians.

India Budget 2024 proposes a higher tax on certain capital gains for non-residents.

But, the budget reduces tax on certain assets. The new tax rate will apply only on transfers made on or after July 23, 2024. Government officials said the effort brings parity between resident and non resident taxation structure. On higher taxes, long-term capital gains resulting on transfer referred to in section 115E is raised to 12.5% for certain assets. Longterm capital gains referred to in section 112A exceeding Rs 1, 25,000 will now be taxable at 12.5% instead of 10% from 23 July 2024. Short-term capital gains referred to in section 111A is hiked to 20% from 15%. Indexation benefit on sale of property has been removed, with new LTCG rate of 12.5% for capital gains on sale of property. Good news is that - a) long-term capital gains [not being long term capital gains referred to in clauses (33) and (36) of section 10] is reduced from 20% to 12.5%, and, b) long-

term capital gains referred to in sub-clause (iii) of clause (c) of sub section (1) of section 112 of 10% will not be applicable for transfers on or after July 23, 2024. To bring parity of taxation between residents and non-residents, corresponding amendments to section 115AD, 115AB, 115AC, 115ACA and 115E are made to align the rates of taxation in respect of longterm capital gains proposed under section 112A and 112 and rates of short term capital gains proposed under section 111A. Also, there are various provisions of Tax

Deduction at Source (TDS) with different thresholds and multiple rates between 0.1%, 1%, 2%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% and above. To improve ease of doing business and better compliance by taxpayers, the TDS rates are proposed to be reduced. However, no change would occur with respect to sections such as TDS on salary, TDS on virtual digital assets, TDS on winnings from lottery etc/ race horses, payment on transfer of immovable property and payments to non-residents, TDS rates for TDS on contracts etc.

The Snake is the sixth animal in the 12year cycle of the Vietnamese and Chinese zodiacs. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the coming months on how this year resonates with you.

In Richlands, the Vietnamese Community in Australia - Queensland Chapter will host their annual Lunar New Year festival from January 24th to 25th, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM at 315 Freeman Road, Richlands. This free

event welcomes people of all ages and cultures. I have volunteered at this event from a very young age, so I can assure you it’s an event not to be missed. Grace church will be doing some important fundraising, so please stop by to say hello and buy some delicious traditional Vietnamese food.

They have some important goals that we need to support them meet in 2025.

Another highlight is the Greater Springfield Kite Festival on January 19th, 2025, at Woodcrest State College Oval, Springfield, hosted by the Greater Springfield Indian Association INC. A big thanks to President Murkesh Dubay and his team for making this event a yearly success. So much fun in one day makes it another event that you shouldn’t miss.

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending the Platinum Events Services Gold Coast’s Sponsors & Volunteers Appreciation Dinner, hosted by President Manish Saini and his team.

Hearing from community and business leaders who are making a grassroots difference was inspiring, including our very own JD Deo. Great to hear from community and business leaders dedicated to enriching both the Indian and broader communities and learn about many upcoming Indian and

multicultural events in 2025.

Thank you for the positive feedback from readers! It was nice to meet many of our readers who attended the Forest Lake Festival in December 2024. A big round of applause to Sargam Music and all the performers, volunteers, and everyone who made this event possible. Every year, I love volunteering at the festival with my mum. Spreading the cheer didn’t stop there for me. I enjoyed volunteering at the Community Uniting Church’s Blessing Day thanks to Rev.Emma and her team who made sure

hundreds of presents and food hampers were given to families in need in the Ellen Grove area and surrounding suburbs, and at the Forest Lake Elevate Church’s annual Christmas lunch hosted by Pastor Mavis and Raj and their team. The room was full during the service and free community lunch. I have been volunteering with this team from an early age and while the rooms get larger it never stops Elevate from making sure everyone is welcomed and made treated with all the love in the world.

It’s truly rewarding to help others, especially during the

festive season.

I would also like to thank Pastor Hoa Trinh, Diem Nguyen, Narelle Ngo, youth team leader Wang, Fu, and the youth team for making me feel so welcome at their Multicultural Youth Service and Youth Christmas Night celebration. I was taken aback by how the Vietnamese Grace Church has gone above and beyond to shine the spirit of Christmas. Their handmade decorations, crafted with hundreds of hours of volunteer work, made the event special for families and spread joy. In 2025, their goal is to continue supporting youth, families, and seniors, fostering an environment of forgiveness, togetherness, and hope. Pastor Hoa kindly gave me a tour and showed me how she has helped raise funds for the blind and young people affected by drugs and other real issues. If you can donate or help them reach their goal of buying a bus to transport their youth and other members, please reach out to them or me.

In a wide-ranging exclusive interview with PIO TV Managing Editor Munish Gupta, Ambassador Sooklal says his immediate task after taking over the reins will be to double bilateral trade, make the South Africa visa regime friendly, streamline operations of High Commission in Delhi and Consulate General in Mumbai, work together with India on multilateral issues, and stimulate the India-Africa corridor for development partnership.

Fiji Floods on Christmas Day 2024: A Season of Adversity FIJI, like many other Pacific Island nations, has faced an increasing frequency of natural disasters, especially flooding, in recent years.

The Christmas season in 2024 was unfortunately marked by severe flooding that impacted western division of the island nation.

Fiji's tropical climate, characterized by heavy rains, is especially vulnerable to intense flooding during the wet season, which runs from November to April. On Christmas Day 2024, a combination of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and a possible tropical storm contributed to widespread floods.

This disaster affected several parts of Fiji, particularly in lowlying areas where rivers overflowed and flash floods rapidly inundated communities.

As floodwaters rose, thousands of Fijians were displaced from their homes, and many towns, including the capital Suva, saw their streets submerged. Transportation was severely impacted, with roads washed away or rendered impassable. This Call: (07) 3189 6535

In addition to the immediate damage to infrastructure, the floods disrupted daily life for thousands of people, including those celebrating Christmas. 2024, a 35 per cent increase over the same period in 2023. World Heritage Week: Telangana to Boost Adventure, Spiritual, and Tourism facilities of Rs 255 cr developed in Gujarat Heritage Tourism BY 2030, Telangana hopes to welcome over 10 crore domestic visitors and over 5 lakh foreign visitors, as part of its first-ever tourism policy for 2025–2030. According to authorities from the tourism administration, this is a part of ambitions to make the state India's most popular travel destination. According to reports, the state cabinet is anticipated to approve the new policy by the end of this month after it was presented to the Telangana parliament earlier this week. In 2023, the state welcomed around

Sandeep Kumar THE very word Veda means knowledge, derived from the root vid. Indeed, the Vedas are the fountainhead of the knowledge. Entire humanity recognizes that Rgveda is the oldest book in the library of the mankind. However, the truth is that the four Vedas (Rgveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda) were revealed to four Rsis at the dawn of the mankind on the earth. God's Revelation of Vedas: Badaraymja, the author of Brahmasutra (also called Vedanta-Dariana) declares at the outset that God exists because Vedas exist — ilistrayonitvdt. It must be so because the most benevolent God must reveal the knowledge to the mankind once He creates the creation and His masterpiece that the man is.

Pataajali, the author of Yoga Dariana declares that God is the original teacher for the mankind — sa parvesamapi guruh kalenanavacchedat.

The common sense says that God's revelation must appear at the onset of the creation so that everybody, the first generation included, benefits from the same. Any book that appears into the world after human beings have inhabited the earth for a length of time can’t claim to be God's revelation.

Also, God's revelation of knowledge includes the knowledge of the language.

So, any book that claims to be God's revelation must appear before the knowledge of the

language developed. That means that a book in Arabic can’t be God's revelation if the Arabic language had developed before the book appeared. Similarly, a book appearing in Latin or Hebrew can not be God's revelation if these languages had developed at the time of appearance of that book. On the same token, Gird can not be called as God's revelation because the language of Sanskrit was very much in its developed form when Gita came into existence.

Therefore, only Vedas can be God's revelations because they only gave rise to the language that is called Sanskrit. Commensurate to the unique features of the Vedas, man's greatest effort was focused on preserving them since his advent on the earth. He devised several methods to recite it to preserve the same without any infinitesimal change even in a letter and its pronunciation. We Indians should take extreme pride that our forefathers

took utmost care to such an extent. Of course, they were guided in their zeal and effort by the belief that it is God given word which they must pass on to the future generations, come what may. There is no other book even remotely close to such a unique astounding feature that the Vedas are associated with. Both the Creation and the Vedas Show Harmony: The very next line 135.darayana wrote after the above quoted line was — tattu sanzanvayat. Vedas must be God's revelations because all they contain tally well with the creation. For example, the earth is referred to as bhiigola, meaning the earth is round like a sphere as is indeed the case. This led the ancient people in India to know that the earth is round like a ball while, on the contrary, the people in West Asia and elsewhere I thought it to be flat like a mat. There is nothing in the Vedas that is contrary to what is seen in nature. Over and beyond what we know today, the Vedas may contain many more revelations that we might not even be aware of today. Vedas contain knowledge about both matter and spirit. The knowledge about matter is in seed form leaving ample room

for man to discover further and create his own body of literature. On the other hand, knowledge pertaining to spirit is at its pinnacle that man will never be able to add anything to that body of knowledge. The Vedas will always remain relevant like the sun is. Though man has created many sources of light to dispel the darkness, He remains dependent upon the sun. The role of Vedas is like that of the sun albeit in the inner intellectual domain where man must exhibit greater perseverance to dispel the darkness of untrue knowledge, which leads to pains and agonies of much greater proportions.

Let us hope that humanity will benefit from the Vedas as much as it benefits from the sun, both having been created by the most benevolent and merciful God. If man followed the path shown by the Vedas in the ancient India, the life was at its brightest zenith.

The Girmit Foundation Australia was founded in 2021

by Brisbane (former Fiji) residents and descendants of Girmitiyas. This Foundation is formed to create awareness by organising “Girmit” related events and providing relevant and accurate information via its social platform and website.

New Year, Renewed Focus: Tackling Hepatitis in Our Communities WHILE we have made good progress in 2024 toward improving hepatitis B and hepatitis C outcomes in Queensland, significant challenges remain in achieving our 2030 goals.

As we enter 2025, we want to address the key gaps that require focused efforts: 1. More than 30% of people living with hepatitis B have not been diagnosed 2. Nearly 80% of people living with chronic hepatitis B do not regularly monitor their liver condition as recommended.

3. In Queensland 22,889 people living with hepatitis C have received curative treatment between 2016 and October 2023.

4. However, an estimated 74000 people in Australia are still living with hepatitis C, with Queensland having 2105 new notifications of hepatitis C infection in 2023 HEPATITIS B. Whilst not

all

people

living with chronic hepatitis B need treatment, but ALL people living with chronic hepatitis B need regular liver health checks. These checks include blood tests (including hepatitis B DNA every 12 months), liver ultrasounds every six months (for certain groups), and fibrosis assessments (such as Fibroscan every12 months).

to subsidise the highly effective treatments, which can be prescribed by a GP or a nurse practitioner with special training. To find out if you have hepatitis C all you need is a simple specific blood test. Just ask your health provider.

With high interest rates, house prices, cost of living pressures, and difficulty finding suitable accommodation are always high. Then, there were ongoing wars in Europe and the Middle East. Then there were the earthquakes, floods, and more. For many, it has been a year filled with challenges and sorrow like never before.

As we enter 2025, there will

still be many challenges, times of joy and peace, and times of pain and suffering. For some, it could mean another year of difficulties, trouble, and fear. The important thing is not about what we will go through in 2025 but how we go through it. We could go through it filled with anxiety, worry, and distress, or we can choose to go through it filled with faith, peace, and hope.

What you could encounter in 2025 may surprise you, but the good news is it is not a surprise to God. But when you go through this year with a positive outlook, strong, courageous, great attitude, and clear vision, you will come to the end of 2025 better and not bitter.

In the scriptures, we read how God called Israel's children out of Egypt into the promised land, Israel.

The promised land had its giant-sized problems, so they had to face and defeat them before moving in and taking up residence. So, God said to them, "Be strong. Take courage. Don't be intimidated.

Don't give them a second thought because GOD, your God, is striding ahead of you.

He's right there with you. He won't let you down; he won't leave you." (Deuteronomy 7).

HERE ARE 3 THINGS GOD SAID TO THEM. 1) "Your God, Who is among you, is a great and awesome God." No matter what you face this year, remember that your God is more powerful and more potent than any opposition and force coming against you. The forces that are for you far outnumber those which are coming to

push you. Remember that as a believer in Christ, you never walk alone; God is with you.

2) "God will drive out those nations before you." God's promise for you is that He will go before you in 2025. He will do things for you that you could not do for yourself. But you must do your part. Show up to the fight with humility and the right attitude. God has not led you this far to see you lose and be defeated. God sees your faith and endurance.

The enemy may have been laughing at you, seeing you defeated repeatedly, but little does he know that you

have been standing in faith, trusting God, and getting closer to victory.

3) "Little by little, you will overcome your opposition."

Whether it is conquering your "Promised Land" or overcoming your character flows, you can't do it all at once. God works with you in one area after another. Life is not one big battle, but a series of small daily victories required to defeat your spiritual growth enemies.

This year, again, you will go through times of pain and struggle.

But understand something: you don't have to fight all your battles alone.

God promises to be with you.

Trust Him and His ways.

Be at peace and be patient.

Invite God into your pain and difficulties. He will bring you out of these situations and grow you, making you stronger, healthier, and better. There will be more pandemics, earthquakes, hurricanes, and famines, but the good news is God is fully aware of these, and He has power over them. Do not

activate the enemy through fear; activate God's power in your life through faith. The pandemic, forces of evil, and natural disasters do not have the final say; God does.

I believe all this is possible through having faith in Jesus Christ. By trusting Him as your Lord and Saviour, God will strengthen you to go through 2025 with renewed energy and vision.

LET US PRAY Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for helping me through this challenging year. Thank you for carrying me through the uncertainty of deep waters, the flames of trials, and the pain of severe losses. I always know how much I need your grace, strength, and power to work through even the most challenging days. Thank you again for being with me as I go through this year of 2025.

Maha Kumbh Mela THE Kumbh Mela, literally translated as Pitcher Fair or Aquarius Fair, refers to the congregation of pilgrims in Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik on the riverbanks to take a Snan or dip in the rivers on designated auspicious dates during the period from Paush to Phalgun (January – February). It is the largest peaceful gathering of pilgrims in the world attended by people from around the globe.

The Kumbh Mela location in a particular year depends upon the position of planets, Sun and Jupiter in relation to Zodiac constellations.

The fair is rotated between Haridwar on the banks of River Ganga, Nasik on the banks of River Godavari, Ujjain on the banks of River Khsipra and Prayagraj at Triveni Sangam, the confluence of three rivers namely Ganga, Yamuna and invisible Saraswati.

The Kumbh Mela lasts several weeks. It begins with the Paush Purnima Snan, and concludes on Maha Shivratri, the day of last important Snan.

Bathing in the rivers is the most important ritual for pilgrims. This can be done every day but certain days are considered more auspicious.

The Makar Sankranti is believed to be the most important day for bathing. The largest number of people takes a dip in the waters on this day.

The ceremonial bath is known as Shahi Snan or Royal Bath. It is led by the Naga Sadhus, ascetic warriors, who immerse themselves in the sacred water in a large procession.

Other sadhus and the general masses then follow the ritual of bathing.

Traditional Hindus believe that bathing in the sacred rivers on these occasions cleanses the mortals of sins incurred in the past and encourages pursuing a virtuous life in the future.

The most dedicated pilgrims and groups set up their residence on the site to experience the Mela from the beginning to the end. Others visit on the special bathing days. Many devotees stay for a certain period, observing austerity, giving alms and bathing at sunrise every day.

People from almost all sections of the Hindu religion and associated religious organisations attend the Mela. Sadhus from different denominations move in a procession, displaying the diversity of the Hindu ascetic community.

In addition to the bathing, many other religious, cultural, entertainment and social activities are performed during the Mela, promoting a range of ideas, objectives and philosophies.

Devotees sing and chant devotional songs, creating a spiritual ambience. Many guests engage in yoga and meditation techniques to strive for mental and physical wellbeing.

Renowned saints and gurus deliver lectures on spiritual and philosophical topics imparting knowledge to the assembled audiences.

Charitable organisations offer meals and provide other services free or at nominal costs.

The Kumbh Mela is an annual event, which follows a twelve-year cycle. In the twelfth year, it is known as Maha Kumbh and in the sixth year Ardh Kumbh.

This year it is Maha Kumbh.

Prayagraj is hosting the Maha Kumbh, which starts on January 13, 2025, with the Paush Purnima Snan, and concludes on February 26, 2025, the Maha Shivratri day. Other important dates for bathing are: (1) Makar Sankranti (First Shahi Snan), 14 January 2025; (2) Mauni Amavasya (Second Shahi Snan), 29 January 2025; (3) Vasant Panchami (Third Shahi Snan), 3 February 2025, and (4) Maghi Purnima, 12 February 2025.

About 400 million people are expected to participate in the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh Mela. The state government, which has significant experience in organising the Kumbh Mela of previous years, is responsible for orchestrating it also this year.

Management and supervision for smooth running of an extensive infrastructure, with attention to ensuring safety and access to hygienic facilities for all attendees is the responsibility of the state administration.

During the Ardh Kumbh Mela in 2019 in Prayagraj, 200 million visitors were recorded, with about 50 million partaking in the ritual bath on the most auspicious day, the Makar Sankranti.

For the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela, a designated area has been established as a separate administrative district for four months.

The total area is divided into 25 sections spread over 40 square kilometres. It comprises accommodation, roads, electricity and water supplies, waste disposal, communication towers and 11 hospitals.

Temporary houses and large tents with suitable facilities are set up to accommodate the visitors. A typical large tent has space for up to 20,000 people to stay. People are expected to bathe in the waters along a 12 kilometre long stretch.

About 20,000 workers are responsible for keeping the area and its more than 150,000 temporary toilets clean.

Around 50,000 security personnel are expected to keep the festivities safe.

More than 2,500 cameras, some powered

by AI, are installed to scan crowd movement and send density information to four central control rooms, from where officials can quickly deploy personnel to avoid stampedes.

Genesis – It is believed that the Kumbh Mela has a prehistoric origin and relates to the tale of Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean, found in Vedic texts. In order to become immortal, Devas, deities and Daityas, demons decided to drink Amrit, ambrosia, which would be obtained from the ocean by its churning.

They jointly started the churning and in the process, initially a number of other valuables appeared that were amicably distributed.

In the end, sage Dhanavantri surfaced from the ocean holding a Kumbh or pitcher filled with Amrit.

Deities and demons started quarrelling over it. In the meantime, an eagle, the mount of Lord Vishnu, grasped the Kumbh with the goal of transporting it to Vishnu. En route, a part of the Amrit spilled over and fell into the rivers in Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. As people learnt about this event, they started gathering and bathing in the waters of these places to ensure contact with the Amrit.

Their assembly eventually resulted in the fair renowned as the Kumbh Mela.

Another reason for the name Kumbh Mela is the astrological position of planets in the zodiac. In Hindu astrology, the Kumbh Rashi stands for the zodiac sign Aquarius, the water carrier in Latin. The Kumbh Mela in Haridwar is held when the planet Jupiter is in the Aquarius constellation.

This also leads to the assumption that Haridwar was the location where the initial Kumbh Mela was held.

There is no consensus on when the festival started.

Gathering of people and taking a dip in sacred water is described in ancient texts. The Buddhist Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang has mentioned the Hindu bathing rituals at the confluence of the rivers in Prayagraj in 644 CE. According to some scholars, this is the earliest surviving historical account of the Kumbh Mela. Some believe that Adi Shankaracharya started the gathering for philosophical discussion

and debate to create consensus on religious topics among various denominations of the Hindus.

Tulasi Das has noted in Ram Charit Manas the gathering at the confluence of three rivers in Prayagraj during the Kumbh Mela.

The Kumbh Mela has been included in the UNESCO’s Representative List of Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which was established in 2008. It aims to record and ensure better protection of important cultural heritage events, skills and knowledge worldwide.

Specific days for bathing during the Kumbh Mela have religious significance, as described in the following sections.

Paush Purnima falls on the full moon day of the bright fortnight in the month of Paush. It is believed that a person who takes a holy bath at pilgrimage places on this auspicious day, donates to the poor and makes offering to the solar deity, the Sun, will be cleansed of their sins and attain moksha following death.

It is also known as Shakambhari Purnima named after Shakambhari, an incarnation of goddess Durga.

People worship Goddess Durga and chant mantras to seek her divine blessings. Devotees observe Purnima Vrat, which is believed to bring good luck and remove all obstacles in life.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated on 14 January, marking the beginning of auspicious Uttarayan, the northward movement of the Sun. This occasion marks the transition of the Sun from Sagittarius or Dhanu to Capricorn or Makar in the zodiac. The festival is dedicated to the deity Sun. On this day, the Sun God is especially worshipped and offered prayers.

This festival is celebrated across different regions of India. It is known by varying names, including Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Kite festival, Magh Bihu and Pongal. Although the festival has different names, all observe strong and clear links with the harvest season for farmers.

A large fair takes place at Gangasagar in West Bengal where devotees come from far and wide to bathe at the site of River Ganga’s merging in the Bay of Bengal. The first Shahi Snan at the Kumbh Mela takes place on this day. Millions of people perform a holy dip at the confluence of the rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in Prayagraj.

Makar Sankranti is a time of celebration and thanks giving, and is marked by a variety of rituals and charity.

Mauni Amavasya day falls on the 15th day of dark fortnight in the month of Magh. The Sanskrit word Maun means silence. People take the vows of silence and observe Maun Vrat during this day. It is believed that observing the Maun Vrat on the day of Mauni Amavasya helps purify the mind, body, and soul.

A ritual of offering of water, known as tarpan, to ancestors is performed on this day. People perform sacred rituals to seek blessings from the departed ancestors. On this day, the customary rituals include Pitri Tarpan, Pitri Dan and feeding of deserving persons. People donate to the needy and perform charity. It is a time of self-inspection and inner reflection. The second Shahi Snan at the Kumbh Mela takes place on this day.

Vasant Panchami is an important spring festival, which is celebrated on the fifth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Magh. It marks the start of preparations for welcoming spring season and Holi, the festival of colour, which occurs forty days later.

Vasant Panchami is dedicated to Saraswati, who is the goddess of knowledge, language, music and arts.

She symbolises creative energy and power in all its forms.

Educational institutions and temples organise special events dedicated to Saraswati.

Poetic and musical gatherings are held in her reverence.

It is considered an auspicious day to start education. Many parents prefer their young children begin reading and writing

on this propitious day. The third and last Shahi Snan takes place on this day during the Kumbh Mela.

Maghi Purnima falls on the full moon day in the bright fortnight in the month of Magh. The whole month of Magh is considered auspicious and Purnima being the last day becomes especially important for devout Hindus. This day marks the start of ripening of winter crops. Farmers offer prayers and express gratitude for a better harvest.

People bathe in holy waters, donate to charitable causes and offer prayers to their preferred deities.

Many visit renowned sacred rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna and others. A dip at Sangam in Prayagraj is specifically desirable on this day. During the Kumbh Mela, a large number of people bathe at Triveni Sangam.

Maha Shivratri is a festival dedicated to Lord Shiv. It is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun.

According to one legend, on this night, Shiv performed the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and regeneration.

Believers chant hymns, read Shiv scriptures and partake in the performance of the cosmic dance remembering Shiv's omnipresence. According to another legend, Shiv drank the poison Halahal, which emerged during the Samudra Manthan on this day.

Being an auspicious day, bathing in sacred rivers during the Kumbh Mela is considered propitious. This is the last official Snan of the Kumbh Mela.

Significance - The Kumbh Mela plays significant roles in uniting the people of India by bringing them at one place from all over the country. It provides a communal spiritual space for Hindus to gather and participate in a major religious event. It is the time for devout Hindus to reflect on lives lived so far and yet to come, and become linked to mythological events of ancient times.

It also offers opportunities to discuss issues of common religious, social and cultural interest.

For example, it had provided a forum for connecting the Indian population during the Indian Independence movement.

In 1906, the Sanatan Dharma Sabha met at the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela and resolved to start the Banaras Hindu University.

In 1964, the Vishva Hindu Parishad was founded at the Haridwar Kumbh Mela. It continues to offer opportunities for politicians, social workers, religious leaders and the masses to gather in large numbers, reflect on commonalities and deliberate on issues of contemporary national interests.

MY heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported me over the past six months as President of this special club. Rotary holds a unique place in my heart, as I grew up watching my father, a dedicated Rotarian, engage in various projects. His example led me to follow in his footsteps, and today, I’m proud that my son, Dhru Lodhia, has also stepped into a leadership role as the President of the Rotaract Club of Brisbane International, the youth wing of our club.

The months have flown by, but the work accomplished by our dynamic club has been nothing short of remarkable. It’s a great time to reflect on some of the key projects we've been working on, both recently and since the charter of the Rotary Club of Brisbane International (RCBI).

Since our club's charter, 10,500 meal packs have been served to our friends on the streets of Woodridge, Brisbane City, and Logan.

These include: Monthly feeding of the homeless: Approximately 100 meals are prepared at a Rotarian's home and served at Roma St Parklands.

136 brand new wheelchairs have been sent to Fiji in partnership with the Rotary Club of Suva.

A library and various school resources have been sent to Papua New Guinea.

Five brand new airconditioning units were installed in a local Kingston Special Flexi School for disadvantaged children.

Installation of a dental chair and computer was assisted for a project in Nepal. $50,000 raised to rebuild roofs on homes destroyed by a cyclone in Fiji.

THIS YEAR, WE’VE CONTINUED THAT LEGACY THROUGH: Masquerade Gala Fundraiser: Our successful event was made possible thanks to our sponsors, attendees, and supporters.

Monthly Food Drives: Partnering with Mission Possible Volunteers and Merciful Servants, we’ve distributed care packs, blankets, and beanies to those in need. The Rotaract Club of Brisbane International has been an active part of every distribution.

Donation of Dialysis Machines: Four dialysis machines, complete with osmosis systems, are being donated to the Ba Dialysis Centre.

Christmas Food Hampers: We’ve distributed 80 hampers to families in need, bringing them some holiday joy.

Support for Ba Special School: School resources, including wheelchairs and walkers, are being sent to the Ba Special School.

The Reason for the Season: The Significance of God’s Plan and A Rescue Mission Jesus said “Arise and Shine…”

FROM the very beginning, God announced His plan to rescue humanity from the grip of sin and Satan. This rescue mission was foretold in prophetic promises, revealing His love and commitment to restore His creation.

Isaiah 7:14 prophesied, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and shall call His name Immanuel.”

Centuries later, this promise was fulfilled when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Isaiah 53 further unveils His role as the Lamb of God who would bear the sins of the world: “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes, we are healed.”

But why did we need saving? The Bible explains sin as falling short of God’s standard (Romans 3:23). It

is turning away from the Creator to trust in ourselves or false gods to solve our problems. Sin separates us from God, just as a dirty child must first be washed before being embraced.

Similarly, God must cleanse our hearts and minds from the stain of sin to restore our relationship with Him. Paul writes in Romans 3:10, “There is none righteous, no, not one.”

None of us can earn salvation through good works, because even our best efforts are tainted by selfishness. As Jesus said in John 3:19, “Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness rather than light.” Like darkness cannot produce light, sinful humanity cannot create peace with God by our own strength.

The good news is that God doesn’t leave us in our brokenness. A repentant

and humble heart opens the door for His cleansing and transformation.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). God is always

willing, always waiting, to wash us clean and give us a new beginning.

Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of God’s heart: “For I know the plans I have for you… plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a

future and a hope.” Imagine starting the new year, 2025, with divine peace and joy— joy that is eternal and born out of God’s love.

Pause for a moment and reflect on the past year. How many times has God shown

up in your life? How many miracles has He done? How often has He tried to reveal Himself, but you were too busy or believed your own wisdom was enough?

The truth is, it’s not about our efforts. God is patient, loving, and waiting for you to turn to Him with all your heart. He desires a personal, one-on-one relationship with you. Jesus promises in John 8:32, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

This Christmas can be the beginning of a purposedriven life in 2025. All God asks is for us to repent— turning away from our independence and selfreliance—and seek Him. Like the prodigal son, He is ready to welcome you back, cleanse your heart, and restore your life.

As Revelation 21:5 declares, “Behold, I make all things new.” Let this season be a fresh start for you, filled with God’s hope, joy, and purpose.

The Criteria of a Guru

Perhaps you know that the word guru is a very old Vedic word. It means “one who dispels darkness”.

Now, this expression “one who dispels darkness” is often used without deeper understanding.

This darkness actually belongs not only to the psychic stratum or the spiritual stratum, but to all strata of human existence. That is, darkness prevails in all the three strata – in the crude physical sphere, in the psychic sphere, and in the spiritual sphere. So a guru will necessarily have to be able to remove darkness from all three strata. If he teaches the alphabet or some academic matter to students, he will be called a teacher – teacher in the academic sense. That will not do. If, again, he removes darkness from the psychic world, he imparts intellectual knowledge to his followers, that will not be enough either. And if, finally, he dispels darkness only from the spiritual stratum of his disciples, that will not do either. The fact is that a guru – if one is to be accepted as a real guru – shall have to remove darkness from all the strata of the physical world, all the strata of the psychic world, and also all the strata of the spiritual world.

Now let us look at the spiritual world. In the spiritual world, he alone can be a guru who can lift downtrodden humanity to a high spiritual level, who can illumine humanity with spiritual effulgence.

That is, only a Mahákaola has the requisite qualification to be a guru, others cannot be gurus.

In order to be an ideal guru in the spiritual sphere, one must be throughly conversant with the minutest details of sádhaná, every aspect of sádhaná, important or

unimportant. The guru must not only learn those things, but must also possess the capacity to teach those practices to others. Otherwise he should not be treated as a guru.

The Mahákaola alone has this capacity, no one else. Kaolas are those who by dint of sádhaná have successfully elevated their microcosmic stance and established it in the Macrocosmic one; but a Mahákaola is one who is a kaola, certainly, but at the same time possesses the capacity to help others as well to get to that exalted kaola position. In the past Lord Shiva was one such Mahákaola. Lord Krśńa was another. To be a guru one must be a Mahákaola.

One must possess knowledge regarding sádhaná, not only thorough knowledge of the shástras [scriptures]. And in order to gain thorough scriptural knowledge, one must know as many important languages as are necessary for the purpose. That is to say, it is not enough that a guru acquire the necessary qualifications to be able to teach sádhaná (that is, impart lessons on the practical cult); he must possess adequate knowledge of theory also. That is, in order to know the inner secret of sádhaná, he must possess thorough and authentic scriptural knowledge; then only should he be accepted as a perfect guru in the spiritual sphere. One who has a fairly good knowledge of sádhaná and can also help others in that realm, but is completely devoid of intellect, or knowledge of languages and scriptures, cannot be a perfectly competent guru in the spiritual sphere; for, being a guru, he will have to explain the theoretical side also. If, suppose, I

say to someone, “Do this,” I should also explain why he or she should do that, and at the same time I should be able to support it in the light of the shástras.

You may raise the question, “What is a shástra?” You might point to a voluminous book and call it a shástra, but that would be misleading. Shástra in the true sense means, Shásanát tárayet yastu sah shástrah parikiirtitah – that is, “Shástra is that which disciplines and liberates humans.” So a guru must be well versed in shástra, otherwise he cannot show the right path to humankind. The term guru would be a misleading misnomer – which is never desirable. Shástra does not necessarily mean the Vedas; it means the way to emancipation through inculcation of rigorous discipline; it is something that prevents one from taking license in the name of liberty. It means clear instructions that guide everyone along the path, that lead to attainment of prosperity and welfare.

Shásanát. What is this shásana?

Does it mean torture? No. Does it mean punishment? No. Does it mean atonement? No. Not at all.

Here shástra means anushásana.

What is anushásana? Hitárthe shásanam anushásanam – that is, “Anushásanam means that degree of rectificatory punishment which will be conducive to one’s well-being.”

A spiritual guru must be wellacquainted with all the processes of sádhaná, must have the capacity to convince others, must possess complete knowledge of the scriptures, must know many languages, and must have comprehensive knowledge and intellect, plus some extra qualifications. What are those

qualifications?

Nigrahánugrahe shakto gururityabhidhiiyate – “the guru must possess the capacity both to punish, and to love, or bless, his disciples.” Punishment alone, without love, is not good. Love and punishment should go together, and the degree of punishment should never exceed the degree of love.

Then only can one be called a real spiritual guru.

I have already said that a guru must be an authority on all subjects in all the three strata: As a spiritual guru, he must be thoroughly versed in spiritual science – both the theory and the practice. He must know how Parama Puruśa associates Himself with jiivas [unit beings]; and he must know how jiivas associate themselves with Parama Puruśa (they associate themselves just as the Ganges merges into the Bay of Bengal). Otherwise, how can he teach this science to others?

And who knows this science? Only Parama Puruśa knows it, because He Himself has created everything. He has created our sense organs, and He has created the tanmátras(1) that our sense organs detect. He can create anything He likes. But remember, He does not do anything.

His “doing” means His thinking.

Things will take shape as He thinks.

No one but Parama Puruśa knows how He does it. So how can people know Parama Puruśa if He does not teach to others the science of knowing Him? Only Parama Puruśa knows the science and the method to realize Him, to know Him; because He has created both human beings and the path that they must move along. So people can know the method by His grace only. Hence it

has been said in Ánanda Sútram,(2) Brahmaeva Gururekah náparah – that is, “Brahma alone is the Guru.”

Through His physical structure, He teaches the actual science to the spiritual aspirants. People should clearly understand this.

There are many people who are prone to think that in the spiritual realm there is no need to acquire intellectual knowledge for God-realization; and in support of their thesis they mention the names of some great men. Now it is true that for God-realization, academic qualification may not be necessary at all: there is no differentiation between a learned person and a foolish one. But in order to be a guru, one must be a learned person. God-realization is not enough for a guru, he must possess other qualifications as well. So a person who is devoid of learning and scriptural knowledge and the capacity to teach others, and the twin capacities to punish and reward his disciples, should never be accepted as a spiritual guru. A guru does not mean only a spiritual guru, he must be a guru for the intellectual and physical worlds also.

After the spiritual sphere comes the psychic sphere, which is cruder than the former. That is, the guru must be aware of the nature of the human mind – what it is made of, how it should be elevated step by step from crude to subtle, how all the unit minds can march together in unison towards the goal – in a word, he must know both the theoretical and the applied sides of psychology.

There is a sense of want in the human mind. One who can remove the sense of want is a guru. In order to qualify as a guru, one must have the power to remove psychic wants.

As in the spiritual sphere, so also in the psychic sphere, a guru must be learned.

He should be well-versed in the humanities; in fact, in all branches of human knowledge. In order to be a spiritual guru, it will be sufficient that he have mastery over scriptural treatises; but to be a guru in the psychic sphere, he must be well-versed in all branches of human knowledge. A limited knowledge of a few scriptures will not do. And simultaneously, he must be conversant with the style in which the human mind functions, as also in the method to control and guide it properly.

Australia regain Border-Gavaskar Trophy to set up World Test Championship final against South Africa AFTER almost nine years, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is finally back in Australian hands.

Australia have booked their spot in another World Test Championship final – this time against South Africa – after sealing a famous 3-1 series win over India at the SCG on Sunday afternoon.

A disastrous first-Test defeat in Perth forced Australia to ask hard questions of themselves and Pat Cummins’ men responded in emphatic and clinical fashion, going on to win three of the next four matches and consigning India to back-to-back series defeats.

LifeGA is investing in women, investing in the future

IN 2021, it was clear to Life Global Australia’s Founding Directors that the best way to enact LifeGA’s mission to change lives, was to change the lives of women. Around the world, the effectiveness of making women the focus of any social improvement strategy was well established.

Fifteen years earlier in 2006, when the Nobel Peace Prize acknowledged the work of the Grameen Bank, the Nobel Foundation said the bank’s experience was that lending to women “ensured the best security for the bank and the greatest beneficial effect for the borrowers' families.” According to the bank’s founder, Muhammad Yunus, “Women want to build up something for the future with their money.”

When Project Life set up its Women’s Empowerment Centre, they knew that focusing on women would bring security and stability not only to families, but to whole communities.

LifeGA’s decision to support the Women’s Empowerment Programme has resonated with many donors, including businesswoman, Ms Bina Gorasia.

“I come from a culture in which women often lack opportunities,” Ms Gorasia said. “The Women’s Empowerment Programme enables them to transform their lives.”

One such life transformed is that of Reshma Khan.

Reshma is from an extremely poor family. Her husband’s work as a driver earns very little, so Reshma worked as a housemaid as well as caring for their two children. She was exhausted and despairing when she first heard of the Women’s Empowerment Programme.

“I received training in beauty parlour practice.

Project Life allowed me to dream of starting a beauty parlour and making my home financially strong.”

Reshma is now a successful businesswoman operating Angel Beauty Parlour from her home, and giving classes herself.

“Now I live with dignity. I can provide better education for my children.”

Reshma is one of 12,000 women who have completed the Women’s Empowerment Programme. Project Life relies on social workers to identify women between the ages of 18 and 45 who are living below the poverty line (BPL). BPL status is issued if the family earns less than INR6000 per month, or INR72000 per year.

These women are invited to complete a 12-week vocational training course.

“Now I am earning INR240000 per annum,” Reshma said.

“Before the training, I had no employment opportunities, but training helped me

develop my skills and secure a livelihood.”

“Our aim is to make women self-sufficient,” according to Project Life’s Joint Executive Trustee and CEO, Ms. Meetal Koticha Shah. As well as vocational training, all participants receive self-defence training to improve their personal safety; gender equality training to educate them about their rights and enhance self-confidence; and banking, budgeting and finance training so they can independently operate a bank account, balance their finances and prepare the family budget.

“We are proud of the exceptional success rate of this programme”, Ms Shah

said. “Of the 12000 women who have graduated from the course, 85% are still earning money using the skills they learned.” Project Life helps ensure their success after training by providing free, trade-specific equipment to help women start earning.

“We also provide market linkage to connect these women with traders. Further, our counsellors are always helpful whenever necessary.”

LifeGA’s Founding Director and Chairperson, Dr Dipti McGowan, is mindful of the strength of trainees in the Women’s Empowerment Programme. Participants are usually from impoverished areas, or are widows struggling to support their families.

“Many of the women are travelling further than they have ever gone before and into a city which they have never seen before,” Dr McGowan said. “That would take great courage.”

Programme graduate, Usha Prajapati, travelled 12 kilometres to the training centre each day from the slum area of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state. Though it was difficult to make the trip daily for 12 weeks, as she is the sole parent of two children, Usha knew she was securing a livelihood.

“Now I am earning INR150000 per annum through stitching work,” Usha said. “My life has completely transformed. I am a proud breadwinner

for my family, successfully managing my children's education and living with newfound self-confidence.”

LifeGA is now focused on achieving the target of empowering 20,000 women like Reshma and Usha.

“LifeGA’s contribution will help Project Life achieve their goal of training and empowering more than 20,000 women in the near future, and ultimately touching the lives of 100,000 women in years to come,” Dr McGowan said.

Ram Charan starrer Game Changer to have an IMAX release BIG films are meant to be big experiences, and Game Changer - the highly anticipated film starring Ram Charan and directed by the legendary Shankar - is set for an IMAX release to deliver just that: a glorious, large-scale adventure. This political action thriller also features Kiara Advani as the leading lady along with SJ Suryah as the lead antagonist.

Excitement for this massy entertainer has been steadily building, with fans eagerly awaiting its release. Opting for IMAX was a natural decision for the team, as the immersive visuals and spectacular action sequences are perfectly suited for IMAX screens in India and international markets. Director Shankar shared, “This film shows

what we can achieve when we push the boundaries of storytelling and technology.

I’m thrilled that Game Changer will be available in IMAX, allowing audiences to witness the grandeur and scale in its full glory.”

Ram Charan, who garnered worldwide recognition for his role in RRR, expressed his enthusiasm and shared, “Game Changer is a film that is very close to my heart. Under the banner of Sri Venkateswara Creations, the film marks Ram Charan’s much-awaited return to the big screen and is slated for its worldwide premiere on January 10 in IMAX and other theatres in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Den of Thieves 2: Gerard Butler talks about being presented with unique challenges for the film; says, “There was so much maneuvering of guns”

PVR INOX Pictures will be releasing Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, the pulse-pounding sequel to the 2018 actionheist blockbuster. Reuniting Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. as Detective Nick O’Brien and master thief Donnie Wilson, this highly anticipated follow-up dives into the daring world of high-stakes crime, featuring a breathtaking heist at the world’s largest diamond exchange.

Set amidst Europe’s gritty yet glamorous criminal underworld, the stakes and the action - are bigger than ever.

Gerard Butler is no stranger to intense and physically demanding roles, however filming Den of Thieves 2: Pantera proved to be a new level of challenge.

Returning as the relentless Detective Nick O’Brien, Butler faced a gauntlet of highoctane stunts that tested his endurance, adaptability, and nerves. Butler enjoyed the rigorous preparation, but

executing the demanding stunts presented unique challenges, particularly during scenes inside a Porsche.

“There was so much maneuvering of guns inside the Porsche, which, as much as it’s a beautiful car, wasn’t designed for reloading large guns,” Butler explained.

“The tricky thing was, we sometimes had to fire the weapons backwards. We had to lift off the seat, put our butts back almost into the driver’s face, turn our legs around, and then have one hand out the window.

This would all be happening while driving at full speed and making turns around sharp bends,” he added.

The challenges didn’t stop with the car chases.

Butler also recounted the grueling experience of filming in confined spaces, which brought its own set of obstacles. “At one point we filmed inside these little box rooms with the whole

camera crew,” he recalled. He continued, “We were dressed in black neoprene bodysuits with thick black masks that stick out half an inch from your face. You put them on, and it feels like you‘re being suffocated. There’s no oxygen, there’s no air, and it’s so hot. A tiny little room with six actors who are panicking, all dressed in black. We’re sweating like crazy, and it’s so hot you think you’re going to have a heatstroke.”

Despite the physically demanding conditions, Butler credits director Christian Gudegast for keeping the production efficient and focused.

“Then Christian comes in and films it quickly, in guerilla-filmmaking style,” Butler attested.

The commitment to realism and intensity is a hallmark of the Den of Thieves franchise, fans can expect an adrenaline-fueled experience that goes above and beyond the original instalment.

Kamal Haasan REVEALS he wanted to acquire remake rights of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Golmaal AT the Apoorva Singeetham retrospective film festival, held in honor of legendary director Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, veteran actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan shared an interesting anecdote that delighted the audience. While reflecting on the early days of his production house, Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI), Kamal revealed a missed chance to remake the Hindi classic Golmaal.

Speaking about RKFI’s debut film, Raja Paarvai, Kamal disclosed his plans to acquire the rights to Golmaal, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. “We wanted to do Golmaal,” Kamal shared, underlining his vision of adapting the comedy classic for Tamil audiences.

However, the dream didn’t materialize as another production house, Kalakendra, moved quickly to secure the

rights. Adding a humorous twist to the story, Kamal said, “In that corner, at right angles, there was another company called Kalakendra.

They took the flight before me and bought the rights for it. This is what happened.”

The anecdote added a lighthearted moment to an

event marked by admiration and nostalgia for Singeetam Srinivasa Rao’s remarkable contributions to Indian cinema. Kamal Haasan, who has collaborated extensively with Singeetam, expressed his deep respect for the director’s unique storytelling style and enduring legacy.
