From the Publisher WELCOME to February, and a very Happy Chinese New Year to all, hope the year of the fire monkey will be a joyous and prosperous one for every one.

I have been fortunate enough to take part in few of the Lunar New Year Celebrations, the first one being organised by the Vietnam Community in Queensland Dr Coung Bui and his committee always put on a spectacular celebration. For the last two years they have been holding this celebration at the Inala Shopping Centre. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, Councillor Milton Dick, Councillor Angela Taylor and many distinguished multi-cultural community and religious leaders were present.

The second celebration was organised by Ron Yap of Prime Time Promotions at Newstead.

The fully sold out function was attended by many dignitary with the chief guest being Councillor being Vicki Howard. The function was held at the stylish Peng You China Kitchen and Bar in Newstead. Guests were entertained by a talented jazz band and the traditional lion dancers.

Brisbane Indian Times and Australian Indian Radio were the exclusive media present at the Indian Energy Minister Hon Piyush Goyal’s visit to Brisbane. Akashika Mohla conducted an in depth and comprehensive interview with the Minister (See article on India Energy Miniter’s visit). I was pleasantly surprised by the Minister’s in depth knowledge of the mining and energy resources of Queensland.

Congratulations to Hindu Society of Queensland for celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary. The anniversary is always celebrated on the twenty-sixth of January, which is a public holiday in Australia being Australia Day. The president and the community held a thanksgiving function at Indian Brothers Restaurant in Clontarf, President Prakash Shandil thanked everyone for their continued support

of the society and hoped that everyone could assist with the upcoming project in Bracken Ridge.

I have been kept very busy with GOPIO International matters as GOPIO International prepares for the AGM Elections. The elections will be held by electronic voting conducted by an independent accounting firm of New York.

I am humbled to be a Presidential nominee in the forthcoming elections. The President ship has always been held by USA and UK. The electronic voting will take place end of February with results being declared mid March.

International GOPIO chapters in good standing and active life members have been invited to vote in the forthcoming elections.

The preparations for Navwarsh Mela are progressing well and we are happy to welcome BS Mates as the Platinum sponsors for the program. Stall spaces are being filled very quickly, so if you have not secured your spot yet it is highly recommended you contact our office ASAP to avoid disappointment. An exciting row of entertainers have registered their interest for performing at the Navwarsh Mela.

I would like to personally thank Reg Neil of Banyo Community Group for assisting us with this celebration. This celebration is an all inclusive celebration of Indian New Year, similar to the Chinese New Year just being celebrated. Various regions of India mark this celebration on slightly different dates with slightly different names, Brisbane Indian Times and Australian Indian Radio together with DJJS last year brought the celebrations together on a common platform. The idea is to have a joint all inclusive celebration covering whole of the Indian continent. Stage items will feature traditional and folk dancers of many states of India. We are looking forward to welcoming you all to the Navwarsh Mela.

457 Policy Changes - Restrictions to Self-Sponsorship

RECENT changes to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s policies have made it very difficult for visa applicants to sponsor themselves from their own business. 457 applications must satisfy the Department of Immigration that the applicant will be employed in a position that is genuinely required by the business.

The Department of Immigration may refuse the application if they believe that the position has been created for the applicant for the purpose of obtaining an Australian visa, and not because that position is one the business genuinely needs.

People that will be affected by the new policy includes company directors, business owners, company officers and shareholders. Furthermore, the new changes also apply to applicants who are relatives or personal associates (e.g. friends) of the sponsor.

A few examples of factors that may indicate that the position has been created to facilitate the entry or stay of the nominee as the primary objective of the application are:- Nominee is a relative or personal associate of an officer of the sponsoring business.

- Nominee is a director or owner of the sponsoring business.

- Nominee is currently in Australia as the holder of a 417 visa.

- Salary level is inconsistent with other workers in the occupation.

- Business has indicated on the application form that they have received a payment from the nominee for lodging the nomination.

- Nominee has indicated on their visa application form that they have made a payment

or entered into an arrangement to make a payment to the proposed employer for nominating them.

There may still be options to applicants seeking to sponsor themselves from their own business, or sponsor relatives or associates. The Department policy does not explicitly prohibit selfsponsorship, but questions whether the position is genuinely required, or whether it was created for the purpose of securing a visa for the applicant. If applicants and sponsors can provide substantial and compelling evidence, as well as comprehensive written submissions to show the why the business needs the particular role within the company, this may prove the position is indeed genuine.

If applicants do not wish to opt for the 457 visa scheme, there are alternatives. The new policy does not apply to regional employer sponsored applications, so for applicants willing to locate to regional areas, this may be a more suitable option.

Indian Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal makes Brisbane his first stop From page 1 BRISBANE: Power, coal and renewable energy minister Piyush Goyal (pictured) in an exclusive interview with Brisbane Indian Times and Australian Indian Radio said “He was very happy to be here in Brisbane on his first official visit, though this was his second visit to Brisbane. He had previously visited Brisbane in a private capacity on a holiday.”

Akashika Mohla asked the Minister on how the interactions of the day went; the Minister replied that he was amazed at the presentation by Simtars which focused on the safety of the miners. This he said should be implemented in India. He said his visit so far has been very fruitful, he is proud and privileged to be working under a visionary leader Prime Minister Modi.

The Minister said that earlier today he was questioned on “What is that one thing that can bridge the relationship between Australia and India?” He said first he was taken back a bit, and then he replied that the one thing Modi administration is working on building up trust and confidence with the entire world, people will only do business with you if they have confidence and trust in you. Akashika mentioned she used to remember her childhood in Delhi were the power failure was a frequent feature of the day, and asked the Minister on what the situation is now.

The Minister said that used to be a common occurrence back then even in Delhi which is the capital of India, the contributing factors were lack of energy resources for the power

plants, lack of fuel, coal etc. It is the dream of Modi administration to change the situation from shortage to surplus. He said he is happy to inform that today none of the power plants have shortage of energy resources. He said it was important that India becomes self efficient in energy production, he said for example if an Australian company wants to set up a factory in India they will look at the available energy resources.

With the energy sector under control the government is now focusing on infrastructure upgrade. Akashika mentioned that previously there was a delegation led by the former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Craig Emerson without any great outcome, what has changed under the current administration that will enhance the trade relationship between India and Australia. The Minister replied that today when we talk to anyone in the global context the talks are outcome ori-

ented.

The Minister said that when he was planning his Australian trade delegation he was informed that if he missed Brisbane he would not miss much but he is glad that he made Brisbane his first destination. He got an opportunity to get an insight into Queensland mining industry especially in the field of mining safety, enhancement and production.

"India is a price sensitive market. Our power rate is very competitive. We have 24,000 mw of gas-fired power plants in place. These can be a good spinning reserve for supporting our solar plan. But the cost that you just showed me, I might as well forget about LNG (liquid gas)," Goyal said at a brainstorming session with Australian energy executives and a CII business delegation.

prices beyond 2022 by Australian producer Woodside, Goyal said the time has come when producers need to look at working backwards — towards the well from the wire in the wall and not vice versa — at the time of deciding prices.

"We must have stability. Look at longer terms for contracts at fixed — or near fixed — price for say three to four years. We must also think in terms of longer amortisation instead of just return on investment. Why can't we set the cost of power at, say, Rs 5 per unit and see how we can get gas price to fit in by raising efficiency in the chain and bringing economy of scale," Goyal said.

Goyal hawked India's growing hunger for energy as an opportunity for Australian coal, gas and mining companies that are facing rough weather due to the slump in prices and demand. "India is the only bright spot, growing at a trot amid global economic gloom.

The minister minced no words to indicate that without India as a buyer, things might become tougher for Australian energy producers. "These (gas) projects need buyers for investments to be justified," he added. A report on Monday said Australian liquid gas exports to China declined for the first time since trading started 10 years ago. A separate report said a third of all Australian coal companies were in poor financial shape.

Sit back and think of England YET more healthcare professionals are about to be welcomed into Queensland’s famous and prestigious Brookwater residential community with Dr Ravi Bathula and Dr Vasavi Bathula (pictured) recently purchasing in the suburb.

Dr Ravi and his young family, moved from London only last year and said, “it was the prospect of living in an inviting climate with superior modern amenity that drew them to Australia and directly to Brookwater.”

“When we moved to Queensland in 2015 from England, we fell in love with Brookwater, it ticked all the boxes; golf course, open spaces, security, very good schools and much more.” he said.

In November, Mater Health Services opened the first stage of its planned 1200 approved bed hospital. The facility forms part of the Health City precinct which is expected to ultimately employ more than 12,000 healthcare and allied workers when completed. Dr Ravi admits he had to persuade his wife to leave England. ”Initially she was reluctant to move, she liked her job in London, but we both felt Australia would be a nice choice to raise kids with round the year outdoor activities and a great climate.”

He says living next to Queensland’s majestic number one public access golf course, which was designed by the great Greg Norman himself, is enough of an invitation for his whole family to take up the sport. In the peaceful and pleasant evenings however, they can just chillax and think of England.

PWAA launched in Brisbane THE Punjabi Welfare Association of Australia was launched in Brisbane on the 25th of January at the Greek Orthodox Church Community Centre, Creek Road, Mount Gravatt. The inauguration was attended by over three hundred and fifty invited guests.

Founder President, Pinky Gurpreet Singh formally welcomed everyone to the inauguration of the Punjabi Welfare Association of Australia. She said that the association was formed with four key objectives in mind, and the four objectives are youth development program by involving them in the community events such as drug awareness, promoting the welfare for senior citizens, providing support for women suffering from domestic violence, and assisting new migrants to make it easy for them to integrate the Australians and the Australian systems. She highly recommended everyone to join the organisation to help to create real change in the community.

Also present at the function was Minister Grace Grace, the new minister for Multicultural Affairs Queensland.

The Minister noted the aims, which was to integrate into Australian Society, to promote the Punjabi Culture and allow for greater cultural exchanges and awareness, and to facilitate greater levels of patriotism within the Punjabi people origin for Australia. Creating opportunities for businesses to work together and to come together and of course to provide support services (domestic violence for women and children). Minister Grace Grace said all the aims and objectives are wonderful.

Minister Grace Grace further said “Queensland Government helps that sense of belonging for our multicultural community here in Queensland. Queensland is a very diverse state comprised of people from a range of culture, religions and language backgrounds.

Pongal - A festival of thanks giving in Queensland

By Ms Anpa Thiru PONGAL festival is usually celebrated on January 15th every year and is also one of the longest celebrations in the Tamil calendar, spread over four days celebrated by the Tamils living in Tamil Nadu, India and all over the world. Pongal is also celebrated as a thanksgiving festival to the sun god, nature, cattle and agricultural land. The festival of Pongal is held dear particularly by the farming community as it marks the end of harvesting season. People generally go for sightseeing, shopping, cultural programs and exchanging pleasantries with relatives and friends. The children had fun exploring fire engines and police exhibition booths.

Magic show was a success among the kids and adults.

Huge blow up slides and interesting kid’s rides kept the children active and busy throughout the event.

There were heaps of competitions such as kids colouring, Pongal cooking (sweet rice) and kolam drawing (coloured rice designs) were all happening simultaneously. The fun went on with kid’s fancy dress competition. Watching the little children parade the stage was a beautiful sight.

The organizers did not fail to entertain the audience with heaps of vibrant, as-

tounding and exhilarating cultural performances. The stage was rocking with folk, classical and semi classical dance performances together with instrumental music and vocals lifting the mood of audiences to a great height. Silambam, Tamil martial art presentation captivated the audiences with awe through it’s masculine and precise moves. Just when people thought the show ended after the grand finale, there came the roaring sound of spectacular fireworks. Non-stop of sparkling designs in the sky for 10minutes. What an amazing way to end a festival. Hope to have more such events to add variety to a diversified Queensland.

BOONDALL: The Hindu Society of Queensland situated at 178 Lyndhurst Road Boondall celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary on 26 January 2016. The celebration was divided into two parts, the first being a flag raising ceremony at lunch time, the second celebration was a Pooja ceremony followed

by Bhajans at dinner time.

Being Australia Day holiday, many people were away so the attendance was not quite what was expected. The Pooja was conducted by Pundit Sanat Pandey, the Bhajans were performed by the very talented group headed by Rahul and Davend.

President Prakash Shandil (pictured inset) welcomed everyone to the celebrations and thanked everyone for their continued support.

He highlighted the achievements of the society over the twenty-five years; he especially acknowledged the previous presidents, their committees and other supporters. He called upon Umesh Chandra to speak on the initial setting up of the society. Umesh Chandra explained the initial formation of the society, he said “We used to live at 139 Lyndhurst Road when this property came on the market and

Mr Terburt Datta was the highest bidder at the auction.” Late Mrs Gayatri Datta had a vision that we should have a place of worship for our community. The purchase of this property fulfilled her dream.

After the property was purchased, people were invited to come join in and lend a helping hand. Interested people formed at committee and the society was registered and incorporated. Late Pundit Salik Ram Sharma was called from Fiji to come and formally inaugurate the society twenty-five years back.

The property was fully paid off within two years of the formation. Hindu Society of Queensland now owns this property (Gayatri Mandir) and another property in Bracken Ridge. Both the properties are fully paid off now; plans are underway to develop the Bracken Ridge property.

Diwali is the flagship event of Hindu Society of Queensland, normally the temple is open every Tuesday night from 7pm to 9:30pm.

Australian honour for Fiji-born Doctor

By Vijendra Kumar A FORMER medical practitioner from Fiji was among 813 Australians named in the Australia Day honours list announced in Canberra.

Dr Thakorbhai Babubhai Patel, of Brisbane, has been awarded an OAM in the general division of the Order of Australia “for service to the community for a range of volunteer roles”. He has been recognised for his community service stretching over nearly 50 years. Dr Patel said he felt greatly honoured and humbled by the Australian Government’s recognition of his work in the greater Brisbane community.

Dr Patel was born in Lautoka and received his primary education at St Theresa’s School and then Marist Brothers High School in Suva. His grandfather, Apabhai Patel, came from India and established one of the first trading stores in Ba under the name of A.J.C. Patel Bros. It rapidly expanded into a chain of stores and properties in Ba and Lautoka.

Dr Patel’s father, Babubhai Patel, served as a councillor of Lautoka City Council.

Dr Patel came to Brisbane in 1953 and enrolled as a student at Brisbane Grammar School and then was selected to study medicine at the University of Queensland. In 1959, he was appointed secretary of Overseas Students Association and organised several functions to raise funds to build the International House at the university. He was also active in supporting and counselling foreign students.

After graduating with an MBBS degree and completing his medical training, he returned to Fiji in 1964 and opened a surgery in Lau-

toka. He became deeply involved in community projects. One of his major projects was the formation of the Gujrat Education Society in Lautoka of which he became the first president. It established a school for children to meet their needs at kindergarten, primary and secondary schooling. Dr Patel still maintains close links with the school which today has a roll of close to 1500. He provided voluntary medical service to the Lautoka Crippled Children’s Hostel, was an honorary medical officer for the Lautoka branch of the Red Cross and St Jonhs Ambulance.

Dr Patel moved and settled in Brisbane in 1969 and started his own medical practice in Windsor. He currently works as a partner in a large medical clinic at Kedron near Brisbane City. He has been active in community work. He is a foundation member of the Indian Cultural Association of Brisbane and served as its president for several years. He was involved in the launching of ethnic radio programmes and has served as president and long-serving member of the local Rotary Club. He is a qualified Justice of the Peace and is a life member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

Dr Patel has a string of other awards, including an ethnic service award, Citizen of the Year award from the Brisbane City Council, Australian General Medical Practitioners award, Paul Harris fellowship Rotary award and life membership of Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO).

ONE of the core values of Sikh Youth Australia is its dedication to promoting a greater understanding and awareness of Sikh culture, identity and heritage. Since its establishment in 1999, Sikh Youth Australia has been involved in a number of different projects and events highlighting the importance of Sikh culture and identity.

This commitment to the preservation of Sikh heritage was once again highlighted at Sikh Youth Australia’s 18th Annual Summer Camp with the launch of Amardeep Singh’s book “Lost Heritage: The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan” on Saturday 9th January 2016 at the Department of Sport & Recreation, Narrabeen.

The event was a great success, with the book being officially launched by Pakistan’s Defence Attaché, Brigadier Muhammad Asghar, on behalf of the Pakistan High Commissioner. The heartfelt words he shared to launch the book were inspiring and reassuring and the Government of Pakistan must be commended on their efforts to protect and preserve the remains of the Sikh Empire in Pakistan. The book was tremendously well received by all those in attendance, with over 120 supporters from both the Indian and Pakistani communities in Sydney. Also in attendance were representatives from the Indian High Commission and leaders of the Sikh Community.

The journey of this book began when Singapore based Amardeep Singh put his corporate life on hold after serving 25 years to fulfil his dream of seeing, touching and collecting the soil of his Father’s home in Muzaffarabad. With a camera in hand and

the warmth and support of the people of Pakistan that guided him on his journey, he returned without a single grain of soil, but instead with documented and photographic findings that would soon turn into a book on the Sikh Empire for the world to share.

Like many students of history, Amardeep Singh found it disheartening to learn of the absence of Sikh history in both Pakistani and Indian textbooks, and his book takes the first step towards resuscitating the rich history left behind of the Sikh Empire.

Amardeep Singh’s book “Lost Heritage: The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan” weighs in at close to 3kg, and with its 504 pages, 507 pictures, 14 maps and over 50,000 words, currently stands as the only comprehensive historical record of our Sikh History in Pakistan.

Faiths and community leaders unite for World Religion Day

REPRESENTATIVES of many faiths in Brisbane joined with political and other community leaders to celebrate World Religion Day at the Baha’i Centre of Learning in Milton on Sunday 31 January 2016.

In a demonstration of religious unity, there were uplifting readings on the theme ‘overcoming prejudice — walking together’ by members of the local Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Pagan, Sikh and Zoroastrian communities.

The 200 guests included Senator Claire Moore, Mrs Tarnya Smith MP, Councillor Peter Matic, four representatives from the Queensland Police and representatives from more than 20 faith and community groups.

‘The principal of overcoming prejudice to promote harmony and understanding is common to the teachings of many religions. It is vital to building united and sustainable communities’ said Susan Handley, spokesperson for the organisers, the Queensland Baha’i community.

The 90 minute program included diverse, high-level musical recitals that received uni-

versal acclaim. The beautiful harmonies were amplified when the entire audience joined in singing the final refrain ‘one more step to unity’ led by the Sweet Chilli Choir.

Now in its 65th year World Religion Day is celebrated globally, highlighting the common foundation of the world’s religions. It is generally observed on the third Sunday of January. Its purpose is to call attention to the harmony of the various religions’ spiritual principles and to emphasize the healing role that religion can play as a motivating force for world peace.

GIVING away a share of one’s hard earned money in charity (donation) for fulfilling the basic needs of fellow human beings, animals or birds, etc. without expecting anything in return develops and natures fellow feeling among all living things. Charity widens the horizon of our perception and inculcates universal brotherhood and global sisterhood.

The great Hindu law giver MANU, has prescribed that one tenth of the income should be given away in charity for public causes which benefit the society at large.

Vedas encourage all human beings to give away a part of their income in charity.

Danam or donations must always be given to deserving individuals and institutions.

There should always be a inner desire to help and donate and donations to genuine charitable organisations or persons leads to well rounded personality and spiritual happiness.

Different organisations encourage charity because in the absence of charities the suffering of the have nots will increase tremendously.

A plan for Youth Activities - update from GCHCA GOLD Coast Hindu Cultural Association 2016 program started with monthly bhajan on 15th January 2016 which coincided with the Hindu Tamil Pongal festival in Helensvale community centre, Gold Coast. The Thai Pongal day marks the start of the sun’s six-month-long journey northwards (the Uttarayanam). This also corresponds to the Indic solstice when the sun purportedly enters the 10th house of the Indian zodiac Makara or Capricorn.

Thai Pongal is mainly celebrated to convey appreciation to the Sun God for providing the energy for agriculture. The Thai Pongal bhajan in Gold Coast was well attended by Hindu Community from Gold Coast and Brisbane. The children and adults sang the bhajans. Bhajan was concluded with speech from one of our new member Dr. Asha Sadasivan. She made a presentation in favour of more youth engagement in GCHCA activities so that it can give them more understanding of our culture and lead them to be good citizens in future.

Following this thoughts, the committee has decided to have a consultative meeting(s) to discuss potential youth activities with youths at a suitable venue and time facilitated by its youth coordinator Kartik Menon with the consent of parents.

GCHCA membership numbers started to increase in the recent weeks for the GCHCA with the wider Hindu community supporting the noble project. Many Hindu members came forward to guide the project with enthusiasm and many of them started to join as members. While we welcome our new members we encourage others to come forward with their families to help us in achieving the target.

THE Hon Philip Ruddock MP has served the Australian people with distinction and has made an exceptional contribution to immigration policy and operation.

Mr Ruddock has announced today (8 February) that he will not be contesting the next federal election and will take up a role as Special Envoy for Human Rights.

In a statement released on 8 February, 2016, Mr Ruddock said.

I have always said that I believe I should remain in Parliament as long as I can make a difference. Following my senior ministerial roles I have endeavored to do so through very active parliamentary committee and working group participation.

In more recent times it has been a great privilege to chair the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights, to co-chair the Australian Parlia-

mentarians against the Death Penalty and to chair the Human Rights sub-committee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. I am proud to have been able to preside over a recently completed inquiry into the human rights issues confronting women and girls in the Indian Ocean–Asia Pacific region and am pleased to chair the current inquiry into Australia’s advocacy for global abolition of the death penalty.

Having been an executive member of the inaugural Parliamentary Amnesty Group some 40 years ago, that has driven my deep personal interest in these issues and has allowed me to develop a network of those dedicated to the advancement of human rights internationally. That passion remains unabated.

I believe the role of Special Envoy for Human Rights complements my long term

engagement in these areas and aligns with my ardently held beliefs that Australia has a strong ability to advance human rights on a global scale.

The role will, of necessity, require periods of travel abroad from now until the time of the next federal election. In order for me to devote myself to this task fully I cannot be active in a national political campaign and give effective time to my own re-election.

For these reasons I have come to the view that I should not seek re-endorsement for the seat of Berowra.

I am humbled to have enjoyed such strong support for my involvement in federal politics for over 42 years. I take this opportunity to pay special thanks to my family, my parliamentary colleagues, members of the Liberal Party and the voters in the electorates of Parramatta, Dundas and Berowra.

Thus began a journey leading to his own spiritual evolution. Choosing to become a renunciate, Menon was initiated into sannyasa, and given the name Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati.

Swami’s dedicated work lead to, Vedanta became the possession of every man and women who yearned for Self-knowledge.

The knowledge that was sown beyond time, nurtured by the ancient rishis, and then misinterpreted and forgotten, had been revitalised by Adi Shankara and others after him.

Neglected again during much of the modern era, that knowledge was, through Swamiji’s work, once more brought back to the people.

An outstanding orator, known for his wit, humour and modern outlook, he inspired and enlightened those who came to hear his talks.

An unparalleled writer, he wrote commentaries on the Bhagavad-gita and the Upanishads, and authored inspirational titles on spiritual unfoldment. To many eager seekers around the world, he unfolded the simple yet sublime message of Vedanta as a direct means for rediscovering their own inner Truth, a Truth that lies beyond race, creed, or national origin.

‘On the wings of dispassion and discrimination’, he repeated in ever-unique ways, ‘you too can soar beyond your sense of limitation and enjoy the Liberation of which the sages speak’. According to Swami, reconstruction of a society can begin only from within oneself. Once the personality is rehabilitated, the world, too, is revitalised.

This truth was the cornerstone of his teaching. That same truth reverberated from many a yajna platform around the world, motivating listeners to begin thinking and acting in a new and deeply responsible way to revitalise the society of which they were a part.

He showed that deep understanding of the scriptures brings reconciliation not only within the individual personality but also within the society. When one knows that not only individuals but the environment around them is all, in essence, the One Reality, he said, ‘then, in spite of all difference….a sense of oneness, and therefore a sense of reverence, prevails’.

Inner rehabilitation must begin, he taught, with the purification and integration of the personality. The emotions in one’s mind and the thoughts in one’s intellect must coexist in perfect balance and harmony. In walking the spiritual path, he said, ‘Your intellectualism

must be sweetened with devotion and reverence; your heartfelt emotions must be reinforced with knowledge. The head and the heart must merge’.

Swamiji extolled karma yoga as the most ideal of paths for the active members of today’s society. ‘The secret of action’, he said, ‘is to get established in equanimity, renouncing all egocentric attachments and forgetting to worry over our successes and failures’. When you set your selfish desires aside and act in the world, the mind is calmed and the personality layers are purified of ego sediments from the past.

The very action in which you are now employed can be ‘transformed into a process of self-unfoldment, yielding joy and fulfilment in life’, he said. What transforms mere labour into a fulfilling, inspiring way of life is considering action as not what you do, but how you do it; that is, acting without the motivation of personal gain. ‘The attitude needs to change’, he said, ‘not the work itself’.

As part of their youth development program, Boondall Lions Club has been rewarding Year 6 and Year 7 students for Academic and Citizenship Excellence at Boondall State School for over 20 years. The silent decade and one a real story of Anamika

I WAITED impatiently for the lift, it was 1pm and I was starving. Being single has its advantages and also survival stories relying on chips & dips. Lift arrived and I jumped in…nostalgic thoughts of home, childhood, family came over me. Its February again, it’s going to be Valentine ’s Day, the lift hit the ground, like Anamika’s * life hit 35; after silent decade and one.

I ask myself the same question as I look out at an ashen skyline with dollops of rain.

George Street outside is wet; the earth scented. The light “fractured”, Eastman colour!! Reminisced life a tough task master and this time around. And, then it was pouring, slowly …in no rush. A soft quiver descends with the droplets of rain on my face.

I am alone and I am safe in the city of Brisbane, I tell myself and think of Anamika*.

Anamika* was blown by punches in her face, her scalp was tender from the pulling of hair as she was dragged on those stairs of the plush house in streets of Hollywood Celebrities’ names. A month over as an immigrant newlywed she started living in an abusive marriage, which initially was ignored as the teething time and the Cultural taboo of “how will my sister get married, if I declare; how will my heart patient mom cope and what will people say”. Later that year she bought a supply of the bruise healing creams so that people at work would not ask again, “why is your arm bruised?”

Six months later that same tender arm was broken, as if a soul was shattered. It occurred when she confronted him in an intimate conversation with one of his fantasy women. He would have killed her that night, if she didn’t use her brain, 2 days later, she flew to India- to her parents and mentioned she slipped in the bathroom.

He was controlling, financially, verbally and emotionally abusive. She thought abuse was only physical, until she found that she started believing that she was good for her

“One night when I was in deep sleep, he held my hair from one hand, from his right hand held my right bosom and twisted it; causing me torture, the fear in my eyes satisfied him, he would shut the windows, draw the blinds, lock the room with deadlock and beat me night after night. Because I was not in his control.” Said Anamika* as she looked straight in my eyes, the eyes that had so much to tell. She continued, “He would derogate me all the time; compare me to every other women; I wondered if I never worked, he would be more violent and dangerous.

One Sunday afternoon, in a rage he started throwing suitcases in the room upstairs, I was in my nightwear. The rage was so intense that I feared my life, and immediately ran out to hide behind the hedge; the neighbour saw me hiding; I didn’t know what to hide, myself, my body or my face with FEAR.” Anamika* sipped some more tea as I sighed.

It all sounded familiar; like Rosie Batty – An Australian domestic violence campaigner and the 2015 Australian of the Year, talking about her son, the day he was killed by his father said:- “His desire for power and control was more than his love for his own son.”

Between 2006 and 2012 there was an average of 23 deaths per year in Queensland associated with domestic violence according to the DVConnect statistics. DVConnect also reported an average of 55,000 incoming calls that relate to domestic violence each year. In 2015 there were about 231,580 calls for help from DV victims, which is 657 pleas every day in 2015.

Between December 21 and January 3, Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia assisted 1043 individual clients across its three telephone services – a 32 per cent increase on the same period last year.

No matter how beaten, how battered or how bruised domestic violence victims were, they chose 2015 as the year they would tell their stories. Whilst many stood up for advocacy, with grace and dignity, unwarranted criticism did flow to shun these stories down.

By Pete Lane Rai THE Christmas, New Year holiday season in Australia is usually a happy one of family time, parties and lazy days at the beach. Yet over Christmas I met three Indian Christians whose life was not so happy.

Ravi, aged 27, came from Kerala to Sydney in 2011 to study a basic computer course that hopefully would get him a job. Later he moved to Brisbane but only found casual work. Then excitement as in 2012 he returned briefly back to India to get married.

In 2013 his wife, Sanji an accountant, joined him and immediately found work. When Ravi was offered office work in Sydney, he and the now pregnant Sanji, moved there.

There was joy when their son was born but despair when he lost his job when the company went bankrupt. Life is now financially tough for them.

I met Nishi at a Christmas service, and while she enjoyed the carols, it was later that she told me her sad story. She has only had been married for four years, but after the birth of their second daughter, real problems began to appear in the marriage.

Her husband Sonny, began to

demonstrate that he was suffering from mental problems which eventually cost him his job. To make matters worse Sonny's family had hidden the fact that Sonny had a child hood history of mental illness.

What the future holds for her and her girls is very uncertain.

Then in early December I met Nimi, a married woman with a 26 year old son Joshi studying in Adelaide. Nimi had married her husband in Bangalore but later because of their different religious beliefs she had left India with Joshi to begin a new life in Australia. All went well at first as she quickly found work in Brisbane. Sadly under the former Newman Queensland State Government she became one of the many civil servants who lost their jobs, she is returning to Adelaide to live with Joshi and desperately looking for work.

It is hard to predict what the future holds for Ravi, Nishi, Nimi and their families.

They are like the kings in the Christmas story who had faith that, by following a star, they would get to see the new king Jesus.

They also have faith that, by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ, He will care for them during this challenging and difficult time in their lives.

It was Valentine’s Day again, in a crowded city of hearts and smiles, with young lad on a sunny Sydney summer day trying his best to woo the blushing petite, running with his friends with a bouquet of flowers; as if it’s a competition of “machoism” – on who gets what girl and which girl is after whom. Only boys capable as such would try these stunts, REAL MEN are made of something else! My grandfather would ensure my Grandma had enough “malai” (cream) that loved to eat; my father stayed by my mother’s bedside no matter how many months it took her to recover from chronic illness. Real Men are consistent, respectful, and gentle and stick to their commitments. They don’t HIT a woman by their words and their hands!

I wonder what it would have been for Rosie Batty in February 2014 the month of Valentine, when Batty’s former partner beat her son to death with a cricket bat in February 2014.

For Anamika too, many Valentine’s Days passed, like her birthdays in the Silent Decade and One; at a home no one would have wished upon her. Born with mutli talents, an all-rounder she was not living the life

of a normal girl. She would wear her bruise removal cream, that concealer on her face and put on her smile and carry on with stride.

I think her resilience, humbleness, patience and ignorance of acute chauvinism emerged from those days.

“I’m sorry”, Anamika murmured, as I saw her face, I saw a woman bereft of a soul, a woman who may have dreamt of the heady burning wood, on that fresh wintery evening, with gentle embrace of her beloved, like a feather, listening to a strong heartbeat and those butterfly lashes laps gaping the slow settling sunset.

Whilst, I detest women misusing the abuse factor for their own personal missions, and trapping innocent men in their long rhetoric saga, my heart goes out to those genuine women, who get entangled in this journey, to never find themselves ever again.

I walked through the city by the river that wept after dark, as if it mourned for the way it’s been. The deepest longing and the key human necessity to be loved and cherished; not only on Valentine’s Day but every day.

Anamika’s story is a tale of many unspoken words, of a lost life, with the war scars of deep humiliation; of an unheard cry that was lost somewhere.

On this Valentine’s Day and for many more to come, there is hope for Anamika that someday the beloved she hoped for, as strong as her can find her and colour her dazzling canvas with love, not just one day, but each day and every day!

A small trip by a Fiji Minister a Milestone for Girmit History Thakur Ranjit Singh AS the Fiji Airways Boeing 737-800 glided in descent-mode to Auckland International Airport early Sunday morning on 18 October, 2015 the memories of an eventful trip to Nasilai Village came flooding in. After having that good airline meal of chicken pasta, I was reminded of all the delicious nice food that was served to us by the village ladies so tasty, cooked, with so much love for the visitors, and served with so much hospitality.

We salute Nasilai Villagers of Nausori, Fiji.

Our delegation from Fiji Girmit Foundation of New Zealand was overall satisfied with the success of a memorable and effective pilgrimage to Fiji. When the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola was chosen and invited as the Chief Guest and keynote speaker for Girmit Commemoration on 17 May 2015 in Auckland, New Zealand, some objected. But we reminded them that our history and mythologies show that people do change, and the path that Fiji Government has taken is historic in itself.

While commemorating Girmit on the theme of Syria Ship tragedy, we expressed our desire to Minister Kubuabola that we wished to visit and honour the descendants of the villagers at Nasilai Village. He agreed to facilitate and echoed that milk of human kindness tend to ooze out in times of adversity. He applauded the plan of the Girmit Foundation to present a plaque to the people of Nasilai, the descendants of those villagers who risked their lives to rescue the survivors of the wreck.

“This noble gesture would appropriately recognise a significant historical event and at the same time serves as a reminder of the humanity, compassion and goodwill that prevailed in a most tragic circumstance. It confirms that the goodness within us transcends boundaries, and therein lies our hope,” the Minister said. He added that he was hopeful that the gesture of the Foundation would help contributing promotion of better understanding and goodwill amongst the different communities that make up our multicultural Fiji.

forging a new hope for all the citizens of Fiji, with equality, fairness and social justice for all. He alluded to the fact that the biggest issue with lack of knowledge on Girmit (indenture) was because the History is always written from the viewpoint of victor and history of Fiji Indians have been stolen.

“To correct this anomaly, the Foundation is requesting the Minister for his government to consider including Girmit History in Fiji’s education curriculum, and to declare 14 May, the anniversary date of arrival of first Indians to Fiji, as a Public Holiday. These would not only create better understanding of the historical perspective, but would also be a fitting acknowledgment to those ordinary Girmitiyas who did extraordinary deeds in extraordinary times,” the author Rajendra Prasad requested the Minister, who promised to take these requests to the government.

One small gesture by the Minister by attending a Girmit function in Auckland has eventuated into a milestone, and working for benefit of all towards that. A delegation from New Zealand made a thanksgiving trip to Nasilai Village on 14 October, 2015 and presented the villagers with gifts and a commemorative plaque. The villagers were also promised assistance through New Zealand and Indian High Commissions of some village projects that needed to be completed.

The delegation also met Minister Kubuabola to follow up on the request for May 14 to be declared a Public Holiday. This is under discussion and some positive outcomes are expected on this request.

The delegation, while in Fiji, also visited Minister of Education, Dr Mahendra Reddy.

“The Ministry is now looking at the curriculum and Girmit History is something that we hope to include in our curriculum, “Minister Reddy told the delegation. And some positive steps have already been taken. There was discussion on some rural school projects that were to be undertaken with assistance from some New Zealand Trusts. A suggestion was also made to commence a book drive whereby library books and other similar items would be collected in New Zealand and shipped to Fiji to be distributed in its schools, especially in the rural and maritime ones that need assistance. Girmit Foundation would work with the Ministry to bring this to reality in 2016.

During Minister’s visit during Girmit Commemoration, a suggestion was mooted where the book on Girmit history and events, “Tears in Paradise Sacrifices and Suffering, 1879- 2004” was to be translated into ITaukei (Fijian) language. This has now been facilitated by cooperation between Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indian High

Commission in Fiji, and the book is in the process of translation by a Fijian scholar.

Finally, this revival of Girmit movement in Auckland was intended to inspire Fiji Girmit Council to get back to its old form and take a cue from Indo-Fijian Diaspora in New Zealand. As a result, a part of the delegation also made a courtesy call to Fiji Girmit Council’s Girmit Centre in Lautoka, where talks were held between the delegation and committee members of Fiji Girmit Council to work together for benefit of Girmit history.

As the early morning Fiji Airways flight number FJ415 hit the tarmac at Auckland International Airport on the night flight from Fiji at around 2am on a Sunday morning, I was jolted back, and appreciated Fiji Airways for the night flights, which have double benefits. While it makes maximum utilisation of its asset, the planes, with overnight and shorthaul flights, it also gives the travellers on short Fiji trips that extra time back home with friends and relatives. No longer are two days wasted in travelling to and fro - they are undertaken in the depth of the night. Very nice gesture from Fiji Airways. I suppose I could make a good overseas Fijian Travel writer for Fiji Airways. I wished to be that, but it seems they still believe you need to be a White man to write well. Perhaps like Girmit, a colonial hangover.

But, yes, this was not the last trip. As Nasilai Villagers lamented that many people visited them but never came back, the New Zealand delegation has found a very good ally in Fiji Government, especially its Minister for Foreign Affairs. Hence the above-mentioned projects and initiatives would end up bearing fruits in fertile vision. And we promise to fly Fiji Airways again. Thanks for the nice friendly service, and that midnight double can of Fiji Gold. Isa lei Fiji. Nasilai Village, we will visit again, and relish that crab curry I longed to eat more of. Vinaka Vaka Levu, Nasilai Villagers, and Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, and your very effective team in Suva, Fiji. We will come again.

Moral vaccinations...

By Ml. M Nawaaz Ashrafi THE subject of this article is immunization. I do not mean the medical vaccinations but the Moral vaccination and immunization, which are very important to protect our young Muslims and protect our Islamic values and identity as a minority in a non-Muslim country.

You all know, that when a new baby is born, the parents are advised to make sure that he or she gets the necessary vaccination shots, a vaccine against measles, against diphtheria, polio and German measles ..etc.

They do that because they care for the health of the new baby, because it is the right thing to do and, because such vaccines give the child immunity against those diseases.

Someone may ask: “since these babies are at home and are not exposed to infections, why then do they need the vaccination so early?”

The answer is that it is important to give the immunity before exposure to infection, so that later on, they would have acquired the immunity and they would resist that particular disease.

So, in order to protect our bodies we take vaccines and immunizations, but we are not only made of a physical body. We also have a soul, and morality. There are moral ills and diseases and they are just as contagious as physical diseases and illnesses. The medical principle of early immunization also applies to the moral state of our soul. We need a moral vaccination to immunize the soul in order to resist these moral ailments. It is common knowledge that our society is full of moral ills. This is an undisputed fact that needs no proof. Modern society is infected with violence, pornography, greed, racism, homosexuality, drugs and alcohol. The list goes on.

Let us consider some recent news reports. Not too long ago, two children killed a toddler. A Group of nine-year-old boys raped a girl of the same age in their school. There are repeated cases of assaults on pensioners. There are beatings, muggings, and assaults on teachers and parents. Children are abused at home, at school and at care homes.

We all hear about these incidents from time to time. These are just a few symptoms of the moral ills that afflicted this society. These social and moral ills are very infectious and our children are exposed to them in this society. In the early stages of their childhood they accept as the truth without question whatever they are told by Mom or Dad. But then at a later stage, the situation is different. They can hear and see what goes around them in the street, at the school, on the TV, the radio, the cinema, the newspapers and everywhere else.

They become exposed to all the vices and ills of this society. They become exposed to peer pressure from their friends in the street or at school.

At this stage, the maximum influence on the child would then be his peer group, his mates and friends, not his parents.

They will influence his thinking, and provide the food for his thought. Unless the child is immunized and previously vaccinated he/she may catch some of those horrible diseases.

Parents who care for the well-being of their children and families should not be limited only to the physical and health aspects.

The love and care we give our children should be for their well-being in this life as well as the next. This is why the moral aspect is very important and should not be neglected.

If we really care, then we should make sure that in the narrow window of time that we have, which is early childhood, we do our best to protect our children and immunize them against such moral diseases. This is when the parents need to spend more quality time with their children trying to plant the seeds of goodness in them. Providing a good example is extremely important. Children learn more by imitating their parents, than merely by being told what is right.

So instead of pressuring them and forcing them to pray, you must set an example and they will follow. If they see you helping the poor and the needy they will be interested to do the same later.

If you train them to fast gradually and reward them for their effort they will grow up, ready for Ramadan. It is no good lecturing our children about honesty and telling the truth if we fail to do the same, ourselves.

Many parents lie to their children by using the phrase “Inshallah” as a cover, so “inshallah” becomes in their minds synonymous with insincerity, lies and dishonesty.

not a quick fix that could be arranged in few days, like the vaccine for Measles or Chicken Pox. This type of immunization is a responsibility that we owe to our children. It is a responsibility to give them proper Islamic tarbiya or upbringing; responsibility which must be carried out with great amount of patience, love, dedication, knowledge and wisdom.

It is a tough responsibility but with great rewards for the children and their parents. The proper upbringing that we may provide our children today will be a good investment for the future, especially after death.

The Prophet said: “When the son of Adam dies his deeds cease or discontinue except three; a running charity, a beneficial knowledge and a righteous child who makes Du’a for his parents.”

This Islamic upbringing is a duty we owe to our children as Muslim parents. It is a noble duty that cannot not be left or assigned to others. It is the joint responsibility of the parents who will be asked about it, at the day of Judgment. The Prophet said: “every one of you is a shepherd and everyone is responsible for his flock.”

Some parents fail to take their responsibility seriously. They are either too busy earning a living, making money, or are unaware of this responsibility at all, either because of ignorance or indifference.

When things start going wrong and they see their children go astray, they may wake up and they may realize the need for action to protect their children and save them from falling in evil and Haram and following the wrong path.

Some people think that because children are children, they will always be children. Some parents think that because they are Muslims, their children will be Muslims. This is not true always.

Many parents have been through this experience. They gave their children love and affection. They provided them with a good education, expensive clothing and whatever their children wanted.

But they failed to provide a good example for their children, they did not care to immunize them and protect them from moral diseases.

They were unable to bring up their children the Islamic way. Religion and morality for them was a secondary thing.

They failed to discharge their duty as Muslim parents. They failed as leaders and shepherds for their families.

They neglected the introduction of Islamic values, reminding their families and children about Allah, that He wants us to do what is right and avoid what is wrong and evil, that we have the choice and we bear the consequences.

They did not listen to the verse, which says: “O you who believe save yourselves and your family from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones” When things started to go wrong they suddenly remember their forgotten responsibility.

When it is a bit too late, they were shocked and devastated, because their spoiled daughter has a boyfriend or that she ran away to marry a Hindu or an English boy or when their son comes home drunk or when he is arrested for taking or selling drugs.

I am sure you have heard many similar stories.

Those parents who ignored their responsibility towards their children, for twenty years or so, should not expect their children, who are not children any more, to be good Muslims in a day or two.

Such an attitude is a sign of short-sightedness, because you do not prepare the soldier for the battle during the battle.

He should be prepared for it a long time before it starts.

When the disease is caught, you are not looking for immunity; you are looking for treatment.

But it is immunity that we would like to cultivate in our children so when a Muslim child is offered drugs or a beer he would say “No!” When his friends say, “Come on, you are not a child, be a man”. He would have the courage to say, “No we do not do that, I am a Muslim.”

And when the girl is ridiculed for not having a boyfriend, or not going for a dance, she too would say: “we do not do that, I am a Muslim.”

The young generation should feel proud of being Muslims, they should say and live, the saying of Allah: “Dignity is to Allah, and His Messenger and the Believers..”

So that one Muslim child in a whole school, would not feel that he is a minority or inferior because he or she is straight.

When invited to sex, drugs or such things,

he/she would have the courage to say, “I am a Muslim, I do not do that.”

Only a Muslim, properly prepared, properly brought up, would say “No I do not do that!”

In this case the Muslim would be providing a role model to be followed.

Statistics show that most of those children who fall into vice, think that they have to do that because they were overwhelmed by peer pressure. They just cannot resist the pressure of their companions and their classmates.

When things go wrong we should not despair.

Even for those who have gone astray and committed the most heinous sins, the gates of repentance are always open. We are told in the Quran that even those who commit serious crimes such as murder or Zena (unlawful sexual intercourse) could be forgiven if they repent and return to Allah, to His right way with faith and righteous deeds.

Unless he repents, believes and works righteous deeds. For Allah will change the evil of such persons into good. And Allah is Often Forgiving. Most Merciful. 25/70

Importance of Husn-e-Ikhlaaq (GOOD BEHAVIOUR) Man has been granted intellect and intelligence, this intelligence distinguishes a human from an animal. Today man is living in the most modern scientific world.

Allah Swt has granted man the power to speak, to communicate-other creations do communicate but the eloquence man has been blessed with to describe his feelings and his ideas-other creations do not have it.

Allah Swt has blessed man with countless blessings and created him with His own hands.

Allah Swt sent His beloved Prophets to guide humans-this is a very strong proof of the fact that how much He loves His Creation.

Allah Swt blessed human beings with a heart which is the centre of all emotions and feelings.

Years back a scientist predicted that in the future man will create a robot who will excel in each and every way as compared to a man.

Then the creator of the robot will pray to Godthat I have created a robot which is better than your created human beings. God will then put a fault in one of the robots. The robot will fail to function, while other robots around him will continue to function unaffected. Then God will show the creator (of the robot) a group of humans-one of them will have a stomach ache and other people around him will start caring for him in different ways. Only one person will be in pain while the other person will be crying for him. Then God will ask the creator-does your robot has this sensitive heart? He will reply no. Then God will say that this is the quality of my creation that they have a sensitive, caring heart. Therefore the greatness of a man lies in the fact that he has a sensitive, caring heart-and a man without such heart, he is no different from an animal.

The beauty of Islamic Shariat –in Quran Allah Swt has described two basic principles of brotherhood and humanity. Allah Swt has commanded in the Quran that while communicating with others – “Turn not thy cheek in scorn toward folk” because one’s facial expressions gives other the ideas what type of a person you are. If one has a good way of communicating-it creates ease for others to take a step ahead in communicating with you. One should communicate with a smiling face. In this ayat Allah Swt does not limit such attitude to only muslims-but to humans (any and every one), no matter whoever they are, at the end of the day Allah Ka banda tou hai.

“Talk with all human beings in a good way”the second principle of our religion which teaches us that while talking to others we should use such words which are not harsh and rough, rather we should have gentleness in our speech towards others.

These two principles are such which open up the beauty of our religion.

The Prophet Saw said “Save others from your Shar”.

According to Islamic shariah-while sitting in a gathering, one feels a temptation to make fun of the other person, to humiliate him, but if that person stops himself from this-controls his bad desire, then he will be given the reward equal to sadqa.

“Among men, the most beloved to Allah Swt is one who benefits other people”-Hadeeth.

This is a litmus test for us, that if we want to check who is most beloved to Allah Swt, we can check it through seeing how much benefit others get from his company.

“White is not superior than the black, an arab

is not superior than a non arab”-Prophet Saw said at Hajjatul wida.

Today after 1400 years the progressive nations say no discrimination of race and colour, whereas we were given this message 1400 years ago.

Example of our elders Abu Zarr Ra had a black slave who once committed a mistake-Abu Zarr Ra in anger called him “O You Son of a black woman”. The Prophet SAW when got to know about this, he said to Abu Zarr Ra “O abu zarr!

Tu aisa banda hai kay abhi bhi teray andar jahiliyat ki baatein maujood hain, yeh jo tumhare khadim hai yeh tou tumhare bhai hai, Allah ney unko tumhare ma tehat banadiya hai, jis bandey ka bhai uska matehat ho usko chahiye usko who khilaye jo khud khaye or jo khud pehnay unko pehnaye, un par kaam ka itna bouj na dalo, aur agr dalo bhi tou kaam mai unki madad karo.”

When Abu Zarr heard this then he went to his slave and lied down on the floor in front of him and said “Until you put your feet on my cheek I won’t get up from the floor”. When the slave did it, then he got up and as they say Nabi (AS) key sahabi hone ka haqq adaa kardia.

Prophet Saw said - “Don’t look for bad qualities in others, don’t do tajasus (spy) on others, don’t have bughaz (hatred) for others, don’t turn your backs from others, and live as brothers.” This is a message for all of us.

Our shariat commands us to maintain our relations with our blood relatives and has taught us to fulfill the rights of each other.

Mother-heaven is under the feet of your mothers.

A person who has been given such teachingswe can only imagine how much he will love and respect his mother. In addition to this, like Allah Swt Accepts the duas of His Aaulia(beloved people), similarly He Accepts the dua of the mothers even if they are bayamal.

Therefore a pious man’s mother passed away so Allah swt told that man-Aye meray bandey!

Zara sambhal kay rehna, jis hasti ki duain teri hifazat karti thi who iss duniya sey chali gai hai.

Father.

Hadeeth :baap ki khushi mai Allah Swt ki khushi hai, jis nay apney baap ko raazi karlia uss ney apney baap ko razi karlia.

Love for the kids - Hadeeth- when a father kisses the child with love, the smell that he feels while kissing the child is among the smell of jannat.

About daughters - to whoever Allah Swt grants a daughter and he loves her and does not prefer his son over his daughter, and fulfills the obligations of his daughter, Allah Swt will bless him with jannat as a reward.

The brother has to bear the burden of his sister and the sister has to support and love her brother. Once a king captured the son, husband and brother of a woman due to some reason.

The woman went to the king crying and pleaded the king to release her relatives. The king gave an option that you choose one of the men and I will free him. The king thought that she would choose her husband, and if not the husband then her son, but the woman glanced at the three of them and chose her brother. The king was very surprised and demanded an explanation for this decision, the woman explained “If my husband would be separated from me, Allah would create ways and means for my second marriage, if I would be separated from my son, I would have another son from my second marriage, but my parents have parted from this world and now I cannot have another brother in this world.” The king was so pleased by her reply that he released them all.

These are the only few examples of how should we be careful in fulfilling our relationships and rights that others have on us. It comes in a hadeeth: “jo shaks doosron se rishtay jorta hai, Allah apna rishta uss sey jorta hai.”

Therefore from these above mentioned points we should try our best to please our Creator by not displeasing His Creation. And we should realize that the recent cool gossip trend that is prevailing nowadays, it will only make us look like a fool when others would be actually taking our good deeds on the day of qiyamat as a compensation for the harm we cause them.

Therefore it’s better to leave this habit and find better entertainments.

THE Vedic culture prepared a program for the modelling of man. For the success of this program, the custom of rituals was popularized. It is these rituals that make a man worthy.

How many innumerable processes has the soul crossed on its journey across several births? The true tale of this life lies in the casting of impressions upon the soul — whether good or bad — in each birth it takes.

As a part of this culture, the purpose of human life is to purify and clean the soul through good impressions and to keep refining it.

The question is: How to wipe out the existing impurities and how to colour the soul anew? This is possible through the activities of the present life. The soul can be worked upon as a result of being enclosed in the body. To clean a utensil, you hold it in your hand. To clean the soul, it has to be held within the body. Bound to the human body, it can be dyed with new impressions.

The moment the soul enters the human body, the Vedic culture starts influencing it with supreme impressions and continues doing so until the soul once again, leaves body behind.

Whenever the soul enters the body, the practice of Vedic Culture ensures that a fencing of rituals is built around it which prevents any negative impressions from impinging on the soul. It is inevitable to escape impressions.

If there is no carefully arranged practice, there will be scope for bad impressions instead of good ones, and instead of development, degradation of the human being will ensue. If, on the other hand, there is a carefully arranged plan, it will bring about a regularization of impressions, a controlled system of encouraging good impressions and avoiding bad ones and a continuous process of development of man, in which he uplifts himself as well as the society.

According to Vedic thought, this birth, the previous ones and the ones to come are all an attempt towards soul-purification through casting of impressions — a process of cleansing the soul free of its impurity with the help

of constant application of rituals.

The process of complete and wholesome transformation of an individual by means of Vedic Culture encompassed not a handful but sixteen rituals. Their names, in sequence, are as follows: 1. Women in Hinduism HINDU scriptures present diverse views on the position of women that cover almost every aspect of social life. Women are believed to be equal to men and this equality starts from the beginning of their creation.

The ancient law code of Hinduism, the Dharmashastra Manusmriti (M) states that Brahma divided his body into two to create a man from one half of his body and a woman from the other half (M 1.32). Subsequently, together they produced offspring that populated the earth.

Both men and women are of divine origin and their equal divinity is demonstrated in the Ardha-narishwar, a half woman god, who is a manifestation of Lord Shiva, and encompasses both male and female characteristics of human being.

The important status of women can be traced back to the Vedic period. The Vedas have eulogized many female personified deities including Vaak, Usha, Saraswati, Medha and Ratri with a number of hymns.

The Ramayana highlights attributes of Sita and other female characters including Anusuya, Savari, Tara, Trijata and Mandodari. Similarly the Mahabharata displays natural human characteristics through women such as Draupadi, Kunti, Gandhari and Satyavati.

A number of other stories in these epics highly value women in general. One of the noteworthy stories relates to Savitri and Satyavan. Princess Savitri, a daughter of a king, married prince Satyavan whose blind father was deposed from his kingdom by enemies. Unfortunately Satyavan died soon after his marriage without having any offspring. Savitri with her personal effort brought back to life her dead husband, removed the blindness of her father-in-law, restored him to his kingdom and secured continuation of his offspring.

In the Upanishads a number of women have contributed to philosophical discourses.

Gargi and Maitreyi are noted among them.

Their spiritual insights continue to stimulate philosophers to date.

The Markandeya Purana contains a story of goddess Durga who comprises the essence of male and female deities, natural objects and Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The goddess manifests in many forms to accomplish impressive feats. Similar stories demonstrating female deities and women can be found in other Puranas.

In ancient times, women had freedom to choose their own husband. This is evident from stories of Draupadi, Kunti and Savitri.

Gandharva Vivah or love marriage was one of the methods of solemnizing the conjugal union of man and woman. Examples of Gandharva wedding include the unions between Damayanti and Nala, and Shakuntala and Dushyant.

lowing the decline of Buddhism in India. For instance, during the contest on philosophical topics between Shankaracharya and Mandan Mishra, it was Ubhaya Bharati, the wife of Mandan Mishra who confronted Shankaracharya. He was forced to have further study to answer Ubhaya’s questions.

It is a common principle that for a healthy family life, both male and female members should respect each other; especially women should be cherished more for their power to keep the family united. Manusmriti asserts Yatra Naryastu Pujayante, Ramante Tatra Devata i.e. where women are revered, there the deities rejoice (M 3.56). If such an attitude is translated into practice, it has the potential to eradicate domestic violence, which is a curse affecting the worldwide communities, where the majority of victims are women.

The Dharmasutras, the law codes of Apastamba, Gautama, Baudhayana and Vashistha also describe relevant topics related to women, which are mostly identical to Manusmriti.

In addition to Hindu scriptures, The Arthashastra by Kautilya is an important book that describes various aspects of women life in ancient India. Like Manusmriti it describes roles of women as begetter of sons, right to property, morality, employment, dependency and subservience.

Nowadays goddesses Laxmi, Saraswati, Parvati and Durga, all representing feminine characteristics are very popular goddesses and command huge adoration from Hindus.

It is believed that Laxmi grants wealth, Saraswati grants knowledge, Parvati grants a happy family life whereas Durga grants power. These objects are very important for a blissful human life.

AYURVEDA emphasizes right diet as the foundation of all healing therapies.

Food is the first and the most important aspect of health. The question of raw versus cooked is often raised.

We need both.

Ayurveda generally recommends raw food only if your digestive fire is strong enough to handle it for a short time but not for long term health maintenance.

The reason being is that often the “agni” or digestive fire is not strong enough to digest a lot of raw food. This is particularly important in those who are sick or those with a Vata constitution, who usually have a weak or variable digestive power for eg, gas, bloating, acid indigestion, etc. People with a Kapha constitution i.e. a slow

metabolism and sluggish digestion are often debilitated by too much raw food as well.

Raw foods increase the air and ether elements in both mind and body.

Cooked foods are better for increasing the earth and water elements, the Kapha components, and also increase the pitta elements (fire).

Raw foods promote our more subtle sensitivities of mind i.e. the increase of our prana. Raw diet is part of a traditional yogi diet and is used to do exactly this – increase the prana. Raw foods are nutrient rich i.e. full of enzymes, vitamins and minerals and definitely have their place in our diet.

However for most of us, we simply do not have the digestive fire to handle a raw food diet for long periods of time.

Cooked foods tend to be easier to digest and often good nutrition is not so

much what we eat, but what we can digest.

Our answer is to eat lightly steamed vegetables (how we interpret cooked) but always with an edible garnish such as coriander, parsley, rocket greens or sprouts. Eat at least 30% or more raw foods, drink fresh fruit juice, eat treeripened fruit and utilize the spices to enhance digestion.

Listen to your body.

In winter you will probably crave warmer foods such as soup, and in summer you are likely to crave more raw foods such as salads. Normally for people with balanced agni, we suggest to have salads at lunch time as the digestive fire is strongest at noon.

As the body becomes cleaner, so will your ability to digest more raw foods, and you will find that your energy, clarity and health will all improve.

Natural Remedy for Bile

BILE or gall is a bitter-tasting, dark green to yellowish brown fluid, produced by the liver of most vertebrates that aids the digestion of lipids in the small intestine. In many species, bile is stored in the gallbladder and, when the organism eats, is discharged into the duodenum. Bile is 85% water, 10% bile salts, 3% mucus and pigments, 1% fats, and 0.7% inorganic salts.

Causes: Bile is a greenish-yellow fluid that is essential for digesting fats and for eliminating worn-out red blood cells and certain toxins from your body. Bile is produced in our liver and stored in our gallbladder. Eating a meal that contains even a small amount of fat signals our gallbladder to release bile, which flows through two small tubes into the upper part of our small intestine.

Symptoms: Abdominal pain in the upper right side - Dark urine – Fever – Itching and Jaundice.

Diagnosis: Bile is suspected, the exam will focus mostly on the abdomen to check for any masses, tenderness, or build up of fluid.

The skin and the white part of the eyes will be checked for jaundice. The physical examination suggests bile might be present more involved tests will likely be done. These may

include lab tests, imaging tests, and other procedures.

Fighting fit: Here’s how you can survive a heart attack PEOPLE who exercise are more likely to survive their first heart attack, according to a new study that suggests low fitness may pose a risk of death following a cardiac arrest similar to risk factors such as smoking or diabetes. In the study which examined the association of early death following a first heart attack, researchers focused on 2,061 patients who suffered their first heart attack after the stress test, during follow-up.

Mean time between the exercise test and the first heart attack was six years. Patients with a high level of fitness during their initial stress test were 40% less likely to die within a year following their first heart attack compared to patients with lower fitness, researchers said.

“These findings suggest that higher aerobic fitness before a heart attack is associated with better short-term survival after the first heart attack,” said Clinton Brawner from Henry Ford Health System in US. The patients who were more active also reduced their likelihood of dying during the year following their first heart attack by 8 to 10% for each level of increased fitness they had reached during the stress test. The results suggest that low fitness may represent a risk of death following a heart attack that is similar to traditional risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, or diabetes, researchers said.

“While up to 50% of fitness may be based on genetics, physical activity is the only behaviour we have that can improve fitness,” said Brawner. The findings were published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Real Estate News REIQ Rental Report reveals seasonal rise in vacancy rate THE REIQ Rental Report has revealed an easing of the vacancy rate in inner Brisbane as the supply of new apartments edges the 0-5km ring into weak territory for the December quarter.

The inner Brisbane vacancy rate reached 3.8%, up from 3.4% in the September quarter.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the December quarter was historically high and then traditionally dropped again in January.

“Twelve months ago, in December 2014, the vacancy rate was 3.8% - exactly the same as it is in this survey, December 2015 – and in the March quarter it returned to 3.1%.

“In December 2013 the vacancy rate rose to 4.1% and then the next quarter it fell to 3.1%.

“So we can see the December quarter has a history of easing before vacancy rates return to normal in the new year, probably as people re-locate over the Christmas period, and we expect the March quarter 2016 will follow this trend,” Ms Mercorella said.

In contrast, the more affordable middle ring of 5-20kms tightened as the more affordable dwellings attracted residents, going from 2.4% to 2.1%.

Overall, the Brisbane City vacancy rate was in the tight-to-

healthy range, easing slightly from 2.8% to 3.1%.

“We can see from the data that the Brisbane rental market continues to perform well,” Ms Mercorella said.

Ipswich City eased from 1.3% to 2.5% and Logan City similarly eased from 1.9% to 2.9%.

“Ipswich and Logan have been very good markets for investors, with good rental returns of up to 6% in some cases,” Ms Mercorella said.

“It’s clear the demand for rental accommodation is steady and the population growth in these two cities is driving that demand.”

Moreton Bay remained relatively unchanged and tight, going from 1.6% in the September quarter to 1.9% in the December quarter.

The Gold Coast vacancy rate fell to its lowest on record, at just 1.1%.

“As we get closer to 2018 and the Commonwealth Games our expectation is that more accommodation will become available and that rate will ease slightly.

“However, the Gold Coast is a really vibrant, busy part of Queensland at the moment and even after the Games have finished we expect its popularity to remain strong, attracting interstate investors and residents in a steady stream,” Ms Mercorella said.

The tightest rental market in Queensland is the Noosa market, with just 0.7% vacancy rate.

“In many regards, the story of Noosa is a fairytale, with the area really struggling through the GFC years, and now is thriving, with good growth in median house prices and also low vacancy rates, showing that investors have great opportunities if they buy in the right price bracket,” Ms Mercorella said.

The Sunshine Coast held steady at 1.3% and Caloundra relinquished its low vacancy rate of just 0.9% last quarter to ease towards 1.7%.

Toowoomba, one-third of the so-called ‘Golden Triangle’ also eased slightly, although at 3.2% is still within the healthy range.

The September quarter vacancy rate was 2.7%.

“We know there are a lot of good infrastructure projects and jobs-creation initiatives going on in Toowoomba and, like the Sunshine Coast, is a thriving real estate market at the moment,” Ms Mercorella said.

Outside the southeast corner, vacancy rates were weaker as regional markets continued to find their feet.

“The weak markets throughout the coastal centres have all stabilised, to a degree, and we are optimistic that the bottom has been met in most areas,” Ms

Mercorella said.

“We know that the resources downturn will continue to be felt while those cities and towns find new sources of revenue on which to base their economy, but we are confident that will begin to happen soon,” she said.

Bundaberg tightened slightly from 4.6% to 3.9% while Gladstone eased from 7.1% to 10.0%. Mackay continued to hover around 9%, up to 9.3% from 9.1%. Rockhampton nudged slightly higher from 4.5% to 6.1% and Townsville moved from 5.6% to 6.4%.

Cairns continues to be the standout performer outside of the southeast, with a slight tightening of the vacancy rate which edged it from a healthy 2.6% to officially being classified as a tight market at 2.5%.

“Cairns is benefitting from increased tourism numbers at the moment, along with the foresight to host regional conferences that attract visitors and raise the city’s profile on the regional stage,” Ms Mercorella said.

“With a number of significant proposals in the pipeline, specifically Aquis Resort, there is clearly much confidence in the Cairns market at the moment and that has flowed through to the rental market,” she said.

Aircraft noise has little or no impact on house prices A LONG-RANGE Queensland University study into the impact of aircraft noise and flight paths on housing prices has concluded that Brisbane houses in the flight path have experienced “minimal, if any, impact on price, saleability, investment performance or capital growth”.

Report authors wrote that residential property values were affected more directly by factors such as proximity to transport, the Brisbane CBD, schools, recreation facilities and other services. “(These factors) far outweigh any negative impact experienced as a consequence of being under a flight path or from aircraft noise,” Professor Chris Eves said.

The report found that houses subject to aircraft noise had shown similar, or higher, average annual capital returns compared to non-noise affected properties.

Property price and investment performance was linked more closely to socio-economic status than aircraft noise impact, the report said.

Location of residential property under Brisbane flight paths did not have any significant effect on the ability to rent residential property or any reduction in weekly rental rates across any of the various socio-economic residential property locations.

“These results confirm that in Brisbane, the decision to purchase a residential property in any given location is based on a range of factors,” Prof Eves said.

“Exposure to aircraft noise is only one factor associated with suburbs located under aircraft flight paths,” he said.

“These results conclude that residential property buyers in Brisbane consider all factors in the purchase decision not just flight paths and aircraft noise.

Consequently, aircraft noise affected locations achieved similar and most often higher capital growth despite this exposure to aircraft noise.

This is why they are offered hefty remuneration for endorsement deals. But, unlike most of his contemporaries, John Abraham is quite particular about the products he is associated with. A source close to the actor says that a popular tobacco company approached him for an endorsement recently.

But, despite being offered a lucrative amount, John apparently turned the offer down.

“John endorses a few brands. Before attaching his name to any product, he does a lot of research on it. A tobacco brand felt that he was perfect to endorse their high-end cigarettes. However, John turned the offer down as he doesn’t want to encourage smoking,” says the source.

India-England Manchester Test in 2014 was fixed, claims former manager Sunil Dev NEW DELHI: The match-fixing allegations are not a new thing in cricket and this time India ODI skipper MS Dhoni seems to have found himself in the middle of a recent expose. In a startling revelation, DDCA secretary and then Team India manager Sunil Dev claimed that India-England fourth Test played in Manchester in 2014 was fixed. He was caught saying in a sting operation done by hindi daily Sun Star.

"Given the conditions of the pitch due to rain, we have decided to bowl first in a team meeting but I was surprised that Dhoni opted to bat first" former manager Dev said in sting video shown to media persons in a press briefing held at Press Club of India, Delhi on Sunday. In the video, Dev was seen adding further that even former England skipper Geoffrey Boycott was also shocked at Dhoni's decision.

Dev said it was deliberate attempt by Dhoni to bat first and he was 100% sure that captain had fixed the match.

Dev stated he had raised this matter to BCCI and also had written a letter to then Board president N Srinivasan which he typed in former chief's office in front of him because he did not want the report to be leaked. When asked did the board take any action, he replied it seems BCCI was not affected by it as they have not reacted yet on the issue.

"People won't believe the truth," Dev said when asked why he had not wanted his report to be leaked. Dev also claimed he was appreciated by Srinivasan for his work.

When asked why he was quiet for a long time when the matter was not heard and did he ever reveal the names of players to Chandrachud commission or any other forum. Dev reply was he got bit cautious as he fear for his life.

However, Justice Mukul Mudgal, who head IPL spot-fixing committee, has outrightly rejected Dev's claims, saying he has no knowledge of this, if there is any truth in the story, he should have reported to the board again via email.

Mudgal has also given the example of India winning the Test after opting to bat at Leeds, Headingly where ball swings a lot and there is not much difference between Manchester and Headingly's conditions.

Justice Mudgal also said that there cannot be solid evidence of match-fixing or spot-fixing, "You can have the evidence on tape that too after tapping the phone and BCCI's anti-corruption unit is not authorise to do it, only police can do phone tapping. Match-fixing is not as common as it has been highlighted and unless there are 2-3 big players is involved, it can't be done."

Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah banned for 3 months for failing dope test PAKISTAN leg-spinner Yasir Shah has been banned for three months after pleading guilty for a failed dope test last year, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Sunday 7 February, 2016.

“Shah has been suspended from all cricketrelated activities for three months after pleading guilty to breaching Article 2.1 of the ICC Anti-Doping Code,” said the ICC in a release.

“Shah had provided a urine sample as part of the ICC’s random in-competition testing programme after the conclusion of the oneday international between England and Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, UAE on November 13, 2015.

“His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain chlortalidone. This is classified as a “Specified Substance” under World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List and is prohibited both in-competition and out-of-competition.”

Shah has emerged as a match-winner for Pakistan in Tests after ace spinner Saeed Ajmal lost form due to having to remodel an illegal bowling action.

“Shah admitted the violation and a threemonth suspension has been imposed, backdated to 27 December 2015, the day when he was provisionally suspended. Shah will, therefore, be eligible to return to cricket on 27 March 2016.”

ICC said it accepted that the doping offence had been inadvertent on the part of Shah as the medication had been taken “for therapeutic reasons, specifically to treat his blood pressure.

FORMER Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, sacked seven months after winning the Premier League title with the Blues, has said he is not enjoying his time out of work and will soon be back in management.

He did not comment directly on media reports that have heavily linked him with Louis Van Gaal’s job at Manchester United.

But he did say that his family will remain in London and that he liked the competitiveness of English football.

“For sure, I will be back soon,” the Portuguese told GQ magazine in an interview published on its website. It did not say when the interview took place. “(London) is an amazing place to live and for the family to be together,” said Mourinho.

“As a professional, I am ready to move,” added the former Real Madrid coach.

“I need competition every week. In Spain I was at an amazing club but I had four matches a year – Barcelona v Real Madrid, Real Madrid v Barcelona.”

Mourinho, who also won the league with Chelsea in his first two seasons there from 2004 to 2006, suggested that he deliberately created “instability” among players once they won trophies, to avoid any complacency.

DUBAI: Britain's Danny Willett won his fourth European Tour title on Sunday when he took the Dubai Desert Classic by a stroke from compatriot Andy Sullivan and Spain's Rafa Cabrero-Bello.

Overnight leader Willett shot a final round 69 at the Emirates Golf Club to finish on 269, 19 under par, after a 15-foot putt on the last to clinch the title.

Sullivan made up one shot on him and Cabrera-Bello to finish joint second.

Spain's Alvaro Quiros and South Korea's An Byeong-Hun were joint fourth after carding final round 65s for a 16-under par total, with world number two Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson joint sixth a further shot behind.
