From the Publisher WITH the jingle of the bells Christmas is here, it has come upon us rather quickly, well it seems that way, another year gone by, it’s time to reflect upon what we have achieved and plan for the coming year, no matter how much we plan, the master planner has pre-planned everything for us, we are naive and don’t understand or can’t accept the fact, this causes confusion.

In my case I had a massive hear attack on Wednesday 30th November, so everything that had been planned went out the window, we are powerless in front of his plan. Well I was driving to the office and developed chest pains on the way, and I started yawning on reaching the office, I said to Trudi, that I was going to rest as I was not feeling well. I shifted my office chair spread a table cloth on the floor to lay down, upon lying down, I did not feel better at all, in fact I started feel worse. I tuned the air conditioner to the coolest even then I was sweating, I staring getting jittery and very uneasy, the pain was getting unbearable, it dawned upon me that this could be a heart attack. I managed to reach for the phone and buzz Usha who is about three shops away, her line was busy so I buzzed my son Sanjay and all I could say was “call an ambulance and get me to the hospital”. He came running over and called the ambulance who were very supportive and responsive.

In our shopping complex there is a doctor surgery, someone notified Doctor Leanne and she came over and asked her assistant to bring the emergency kit, by this time the ambulance had arrived and the Paramedics started their process, which involved a lot of questions to me. I was getting irritated as I could hardly speak, my condition was deteriorating fast, I was totally covered in sweat and to add to things I started vomiting.

The paramedics did what they had to do and started the process without losing any time, I was behind the table so they had to lift me over on to the stretcher with the assistance of our son Sanjay.

I was in total pain and screaming and half passing out, I can remember some of the conversation but not all, the original plan was to get me to Prince Charles being the closest to our office, the Paramedics contacted the hospital and found out that the operating theatre was not available for a while so they took me to Royal Brisbane Hospital. I remember the ambulance pulling into the emergency department and I also remember being wheeled into the operating room. The whole team were ready and got to work straight away, the whole operation was over by midday 12pm, the attack was around 9:30 am. They found a blockage in my right artery (the main culprit) and put a stent in there, they went in from my wrist, quite an amazing operation, involving the sophisticated cameras and monitors, thank God for science and technology. They found other developing blockages which, I guess we will have to deal with it at a later stage. I am alive today because I recognised the symptoms and acted on it straight away.

portance of recognising the symptoms and acting upon it, it could save someone’s life, I did get over ten thousand views, which is quite satisfying, we need to learn from other people’s personal experiences, with many followers on Facebook I took to this medium to spread the message. God has been kind to me, this had to happen and it happened right here in Brisbane, and when I was not that busy, well I am always busy (story for another day) also Sanjay was available to assist, in situations like this remaining cool and calm while dealing with the situation is very important. The doctors said that there is a six hours’ window within which one needs to get operated on after the strike, otherwise the situation can be fatal, the longer one takes to get to the doctor, the more damage will be done. Important to note that ambulance call should be first, local GP’s are good until the paramedics arrive. The aim should be to get to an operating theatre as soon as possible and not a GP, do not waste a single second. Postsurgery it is important to remain positive, look it is always good to be positive the energy that comes from positive thoughts turns thoughts into reality, this one quality of mine often annoys people who get uptight regarding situations and I remain clam, there are things we cannot change in life, accept that and move on, you do your best, give it the best shot, and don’t worry if it didn’t go your way. People will tell you must take it easy and rest, but they will not let you rest or take it easy, different people have different comfort zones and what is pleasurable to one could be challenging to others, we often get stuck with self-limiting beliefs often thrust upon us by people with negative views. After my operation, I took to social media to pass on an important community message, in fact I am typing this publisher’s note from my hospital bed.

Life goes on, I am not the first one to have had this surgery and I am pretty sure I will not be the last. In my case genetics played a major role, we have a family history of cardiac arrest, it was for this very reason that I started my weight loss program a few years back, when a leaky heart valve was discovered by my heart specialist Dr Julie Humphries, I raised this question with the surgeons, that how come this happened to me even after all my precautions and diet control? Their answer was that if I had not done all that it could have happened earlier and with a more devastating result. The only area were I lacked behind in the whole program was the exercise regime, where I am guilty as pronounced. So, if you identify as a high-risk patient look out for the symptoms, control your diet and exercise heaps. So, become your own hero, have a change of heart.

THE Department of Immigration and Border Protection is stepping up their monitoring of visa holder’s compliance with their visa conditions, and even the smallest of breaches can lead to visa cancellations. To advise the Department you were not aware of the condition will not be enough to cease the cancellation process.

457 visa holders need to be aware that the grant of a Subclass 457 visa comes with condition 8107, which stipulates that a 457 visa holder can only work with their sponsoring employer. This implies that 457 visa holders should be working fulltime with their sponsoring employer, and cannot take on other jobs outside of their primary employment.

It is important to note that the sponsoring employer is determined by the ABN of the business rather than the type of business or who owns the business. This is particularly important for visa holders who work for an employer who owns multiple companies, or for visa holders who work for a franchised business.

While 457 visa holders are able to work for “associated entities” of their business sponsor, simply because two businesses share the same owner, or are the same type of franchise, does not necessarily mean a visa holder is free to work for the other business.

We suggest that you speak to our office to ensure compliance of your visa conditions and your employer’s sponsorship obligation.

When a 457 visa holder ceases employment with their sponsoring employer, they have 60 days to find another employer and lodge a new nomination. Visa holders should not commence work with their new employer until a new nomination is approved, or else condition 8107 will be breached.

Jayalalithaa, one of India's most charismatic political leaders, died on Dec. 5 after a bitter 74-day battle for life, ending an era in Tamil Nadu politics and plunging the state in immense grief. She was 68.

Jayalalithaa, a spinster, breathed her last at the Apollo Hospitals just before midnight, over 24 hours after she suffered a cardiac arrest that derailed the halting progress she had been making on the health front.

"It is with indescribable grief, we announce the sad demise of our esteemed Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Puratchi Thalaivi Amma at 11.30 p.m.," the hospital said in a statement.

As Jayalalithaa's death became known, a loud wail rent the air outside the Apollo hospital where thousands had gathered since her cardiac arrest on Dec. 4, hoping against hope that she would survive.

Her body will be kept at the Rajaji Hall for people to pay their respects, said the AIADMK, which the actor-turned-politician headed for nearly three decades after the death of her mentor and Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, or MGR. As national leaders expressed grief, the Tamil Nadu government declared a sevenday mourning. Schools and colleges in the sprawling state will be closed for three days.

In no time, the AIADMK legislators elected Finance Minister and long-time Jayalalithaa loyalist O. Panneerselvam to succeed the departed leader.

A veteran actor, the self-made Jayalalithaa, who was five times chief minister of Tamil Nadu, was admitted to Apollo Hospital on Sept. 22 with fever and dehydration, just four months after she led the AIADMK to triumphantly retain power in assembly elections.

At one time it seemed she was on the road to recovery but that proved to be an illusion.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying homage to Jayalalithaa, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha at the start of her political career.

In his lengthy message, Mukherjee described Jayalalithaa as "one of India's most charismatic and popular leaders ... a visionary and (an) able administrator...

"She was progressive in her thought and proactive in pursuing the issues that were close to her heart, such as the empowerment of women and welfare of children.

"Her life was dedicated to the socio-economic transformation of Tamil Nadu and its people. Her contribution to the progress and development of Tamil Nadu will be long remembered."

Modi, who enjoyed a personal rapport with Jayalalithaa, said her demise had left a huge void in Indian politics.

Defining her as a mass leader, Modi said: "Jayalalithaaji's connect with citizens, concern for welfare of the poor, the women and marginalized will always be a source of inspiration."

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who too had counted the AIADMK leader as an ally for years, said Jayalalithaa lived the entire life with the same "indomitable courage with which she battled her last illness.�

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called her "popular, strong, bold, efficient, people-friendly, charismatic leader.�

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar described her death as "very saddening.� He announced a day's mourning in his state.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: "Very sad to hear the demise of Amma. A very very popular leader. Aam Aadmi's leader. May her soul rest in peace."

Queensland Premiers reception for Indian business community THE annual Queensland Premiers reception for Queensland Indian business community was held on Tuesday 8 November, the reception has evolved over the years. It ended up in the Parliamentary annexe where it had begun many years ago.

Over the years, the reception took a bigger form with the invitation being extended to include community groups and their executive members. This is when the function had to be shifted to the Speakers Green in the large marquee. At one stage, there was some confusion when this reception was linked with Diwali.

Many people in the community do not realise that this is the Premiers function and not a function organised by Indian community. Leaders of Indian community have a bit of a say in who gets invited and provide pro-

tocol advice, that’s about it. The reception is much looked forward to and everyone is anxious to get their invites.

The function is traditionally held on a Tuesday night, and is a stand-up cocktail style function. The format has not changed much over the years, Qld Premier, Dr Maha Sinnathamby Patron of GOPIO Queensland and co patron of FICQ, Mrs Archana Singh Honorary Counsel of India in Queensland and President of FICQ speak at the function.

Queensland Premier Hon Anastacia Palaszczuk accepted gifts of token from FICQ and GOPIO Queensland. The attendance was much smaller this year compared to previous years, community was concerned about the manner in which invitations were handled this year, and also the late announcement of the date.

His Excellency Navdeep Suri to take new post as Indian Ambassador to the UAE SYDNEY, 23 November, 2016: A packed house of leaders from the government, business and community joined together for a vibrant Australia India Business Council (AIBC) event to bid farewell to His Excellency Navdeep Suri, the High Commissioner of India in Australia. Mr Suri recently announced that he will take a new posting as Indian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

AIBC National Chair, Sheba Nandkeolyar said, “AIBC had the pleasure of working with His Excellency Navdeep Suri, the High Commissioner of India in Australia on several initiatives to strengthen our bilateral Australia-India business and trade ties. We wish him the very best for his new role as India’s new Ambassador to the UAE. Visionary, strategic and very inclusive, Mr Suri will be sincerely missed.”

Ms Nandkeolyar further remarked that it was wonderful to see the Indian community coming together, along with several community leaders to bid farewell the High Commissioner. THE funding round for multicultural projects under the 2016 17 Celebrating Multicultural Queensland grants program are now open.

The Celebrating Multicultural Queensland grants program promotes Queensland’s multicultural identity, the benefits of multiculturalism, and equitable access to opportunities by people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Queensland Government is committed to a safe, caring, harmonious, united and inclusive Queensland, and has acknowledged the role culturally and linguistically diverse communities play in building a strong Queensland with the introduction of the Multicultural Recognition Act 2016, and the Multicultural Queensland Charter.

This grants round aims to fund multicultural projects in Queensland that build community relationships and intercultural connections through community organisations, local clubs, and community-based groups to deliver a range of activities that will foster welcome, inclusion and participation of migrants and refugees.

I encourage community groups, including diverse cultural groups, community-based organisations, local councils and nongovernment incorporated organisations to consider submitting a funding proposal that demonstrates practical strategies to: • promote community participation and intercultural connections among diverse cultural groups, and between diverse cultural groups and the wider community • engage general community groups (such as sporting groups, local clubs, school communities) in connecting and welcoming migrants and refugees into a wide range of community activities.

THE Fiji Senior Citizens Association of Qld Inc has committed $25,000 towards the construction of Early Childhood Education (ECE) building at Vunikavikaloa Arya Primary School in Rakiraki Fiji.

EULOGY - PRAKASH CHANDRA (18.8.1930 - 15.10.2016)

BACKGROUND: As we tell of the life of our father Prakash Chandra, it is important to note that the struggles of his forefathers set the scene from which he emerged as the strong-willed and capable man that he was.

Prakash Chandra was born on 18 August 1930 at Viria, Naitasiri, Fiji.

His Grand Parents came from India to Fiji as indentured labourers.

They were hard working innovative people and after completion of their indenture they started a dairy business, a rice and grain farm and later bought a steam engine boat and started a hawker business selling food items and clothes; and eventually they had 5 shops.

Dad’s father, Mr Shiu Din, was amongst the 1st generation Indians born in Fiji. His mother’s name was Maharaji.

CHILDHOOD: Dad had 9 brothers and 4 sisters, He attained his primary education in Nausori, Fiji. Because of World War II, the effects of the great depression, and difficulty in transport service, he had to leave school.

He worked on his parent’s farm and later in his uncle’s shops at Nausori, Tailevu, Nubukaluka and Levuka. (Where he married mum) ADULTHOOD: Dad joined the Royal Fiji Police on 17 January 1950. Starting as a young and junior officer at Ba Police Station, he went from doing general duties to working his way up to achieving an illustrious career.

He achieved the rank of Sergeant, on 23 June 1960.

He was promoted to the Rank of inspector on 1st June1964 and served as Detective District Inspector for Ba, Tavua, Vatukoula and Rakiraki.

In 1966, he was the 1st local person selected to attend criminal investigation and finger print courses at the headquarters of the West Riding Constabulary, Wakefield, England and Police Photographic courses at metropolitan police training school, Chelsey.

On return to Fiji he was posted as the Divisional Crime Officer and Prosecuting Officer for Northern division, then Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki police Districts Whilst on vacation in Australia, in January 1970, he was thrilled to be notified of being promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police and was called back to Fiji to take over the duties of officer commanding Nadi, Sigatoka and Sabeto police districts.

Dad was the first local person to take over this post from English Colonial officers.

He was awarded Colonial Police Long service and good conduct medal, The Fiji Police Medal for meritorious service by Her Majesty the Queen and then Fiji Independent Medal.

During the year 1971 Dad was selected to attended search and rescue operation course at the police training school at Wellington, New Zealand.

In January 1976 he became the Superintendent of Police and served at the Central Police Station, Suva as the Divisional Crime

Officer Southern.

Eventually, he was also appointed as a Senior Superintendent of Police.

In 1978, he was highly commended for his presentation for discussion on “Juvenile delinquency, Juvenile Court, and Juvenile Crime at a seminar in Criminal administration and justice system which was held at Tokyo, Japan.

He retired from the Fiji Police Force after 35 years of service, and migrated to Australia soon after the first Fiji Coup and has since lived at Deagon where he bought his own house.

Prakash Chandra was married to his devoted wife (our mum) Shiu Kumari and has 5 children, 4 surviving. In order of birth they are: 1. Dharmendra Prakash Chandra - Accountant 2. Dr Sashi Kiran Gaundan (late) 3. Dr Surendra Chandra 4. Sushil Kiran Nand – Medical Scientist 5. Dr Usha Kiran Kumar Dad worked tirelessly to provide a sound education for all of us, and while being known for his strict discipline, he loved his family and was always proud of them. He was proud to also have 12 Grand Children, and 4 great grandchildren.

CONCLUSION: Dad enjoyed his retirement, and his natural entrepreneurial and business skills were put into use as he loved buying and selling items for his market stalls.

In his later years, Dad’s health steadily declined, with serious setbacks preventing him from managing his health at home. He needed high nursing care, and spent his last 10 months at St Martin’s Aged Care facility, close to home. He was highly regarded and well loved by the staff there. He maintained his keen intellect, sense of humour, and spirituality right up to his passing – which was quick and peaceful.

At this point we would like to thank all the staff at the St Martins for their care, and especially the Resident and Family Councillor, for keeping dad mentally and spiritually active with good in-depth life conversations.

Everyone has a story; the journey of life with all its complexities, pain, suffering, joy and happiness and the web of relationships that holds us to friends, family and all those we love. Dad can be proud of his life…he was truly a self-made man…achieving everything through hard work and self-discipline. He was large and impressive in stature when in his prime, a caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and man at peace in his own soul.

We celebrate his life today, and send him all our love and admiration. God bless you my Dad. We thank you for being our father and mentor.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank all family, friends and colleagues for their help, floral tributes, kind words and support in many varied ways. We shall always be eternally grateful.

Mr Surendra Prasad OAM, President of the Association travelled to Fiji and performed the ground breaking ceremony on the 22nd November and donated $21,072 and the further $3,928 would be provided later as the building progresses.

"The monies for this project was raised through fundraising initiatives and we are forever grateful to the Lions Clubs and the greater Brisbane multiethnic communities for their very generous gestures towards this well worthwhile initiative", said Mr Prasad at the Fiji ceremony attended by distinguished people of Rakiraki and the Senior Education Officer Ba-Tavua, Mr Atendra Kumar, representing the Minister for Education in Fiji.

A memorandum of agreement was also entered into by the President of the School and Mr Surendra Prasad on behalf of the Fiji Senior Citizens duly witnessed by the Senior Education Offcer, Ba-Tavua.

“Any Queensland business who employs a worker is breaking the law if they don’t have a WorkCover Accident Insurance policy,” Ms Looney said.

“Uninsured employers who lodge WorkCover claims will be held to account. These

businesses will be subject to significant financial penalties, including the cost of the claim which can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars for severe injuries.”

A WorkCover Accident Insurance policy costs as little as $200 per year (depending on which industry your business belongs to and wages paid to your workers).

“If employers are confused about their obligations to insure their workers against injury or who they need to cover, WorkCover is here to help. It’s never too late to start complying and doing so can reduce the costs should a worker be injured,” Ms Looney said.

Having a WorkCover policy gives small businesses several benefits including protection for you and your workers against injuries and protection against penalties for employing workers without having a policy with WorkCover.

The Design Unveiled for the Australians of Indian Heritage War Memorial

By Dr. Naidu Bodapati Public Relations Officer, AIHWM Committee ‘The Soldiers of Indian Heritage are not forgotten any more in Queensland’, says Surendra Prasad OAM, Chairperson of the Australians of Indian Heritage War Memorial (AIHWM) Committee.

VERY little is known in Australia about millions of service men and women of Indian Heritage, of preindependence and undivided India, who fought on the British side in the World Wars (WW) I and II. In the WWI; 1.3 million Indian soldiers fought and 74,000 lost their lives. At Gallipoli; 15,000 fought and 1,500 lost their lives. At WWII; 2.5 million Indian servicemen and women fought and 87,000 lost their lives. ‘Indian soldiers were the largest single contingent of all Britain’s colonies and dominions, yet their contribution hasn’t been duly recognised’, Mr Prasad said.

Most importantly, several soldiers of Indian Heritage actually represented Australia (in additions those millions who represented Britain) in the Wars, whose contribution also went unrecognised. The Indian diaspora in Brisbane, and the AIHWM Committee under the chairpersonship of Mr Prasad is poised to change this situation by establishing a monument in the Memorial Garden of Sunnybank RSL Sub-branch.

The following are the activities of the Committee to date.

• Held discussions with Mr Graham Perrett MP, Federal Member for Moreton and formed alliance with Sunnybank RSL Sub-branch.

• Raised $15,000 through the first

• Unveiled the design for the Australians of Indian Heritage War Memorial on 12 November 2016 and the details are as follows.

The AIHWM Committee requested the first year Architecture students of Griffith University to

come up with a design for the monument. A group of 88 students participated in a preliminary design competition, and 11 were selected as the finalists to develop the design further. A panel comprising of Prof Sarva-Daman Singh, Lewis Lee OAM, Captain Chetan Chandegave, Harry Claassen, Prof Gordon Holden, Dr Ruwan Fernando judged the 11 entries on 7 November 2016.

A gala dinner was arranged at Sunnybank RSL Sub-branch to announce the winners. A total of 130 people attend the event. The attended dignitaries were Graham

The program started with the Last Post Service conducted by Harry Claassen, Vice President Sunnybank RSL Sub-branch. Mr Paramjit (Peter) Sarai was the Master of Ceremony, who was introduced by Ms Reena Augustine.

Mr Surendra Prasad welcomed the guests, outlined the activities of the project, and introduced the members of AIHWM Committee (Rashpal Singh, Ibrahim Malik, Cr Steven Huang, Shyam Das, Parnam Singh Heir, Harry Claassen, Robin Jaggessar, Dr Naidu Bodapati, Graham Perret MP, and Rakesh Sharma). Mr Prasad said, ‘this proposed project will be the first step towards creating a collective public memory and also this will be the first in Queensland after 100 years of WWI.’ Mr Graham Perrett in his speech said, ‘the soldiers of Indian Heritage who represented Australia in the wars were not even Australian citizens. This shows their commitment to Australia, which should be recognised.’ Peter Russo, Kim Marx, Hugh Poulson, and Archana Singh spoke of the sacrifices and contributions of the Australians of Indian Heritage to the Wars.

Mr Lewis Lee, the Chair of the judging panel introduced all the 11 finalist students (Bianca Archer, Diana Mandiola, Cian Duggan, Caedric Reader, Jomar Bohme, Brian Mates, Graham Brenton, Andrew Kwok, Alecia Chang, Bradley Shakespeare, and Brigitte Aiello) of the design competition and explained about the criteria of the judgement. All the 11 final designs were displayed at the venue for the attendees to view.

Mr Lee announced that the judges came to a unanimous decision in selecting the design proposed by Bianca Archer (see the picture of the model and description), which was presented by Mrs Archana Singh. A full version of this winning design will be erected in the memorial garden at Sunnybank RSL Sub-branch on or before 11 November 2017. The second prize was presented to Diana Mandiola

by Mr. Perret. The third place was awarded to Cian Duggan, and Caedric Reader, which was presented by Mr. Russo and Mr Anthony Shorten (on behalf of Cr Marx), respectively. There was a cash prize of $1200, $500, and $300 for each of the winners in first, second and third places, respectively.

Ms Bianca Archer (pictured below) in her first prize acceptance speech said, ‘during the design of this monument, I became emotional and personally angry that Indian soldiers fought and suffered for Australia, which was not their country at all.’

The function came to a conclusion after a vote of thanks by Mrs Archana Singh who thanked each and every one for their contributions to this historic project, Australians of Indian Heritage War Memorial.

Brisbane Fiji Rotarians bring the festival of lights home Courtesy RCBF THE Rotary Club of Brisbane Fiji (RCBF), a satellite club of Rotary Club of Wishart kicked off its fundraising evening on 4th November, 2016 with a bang at the home of RCBF, the Salvation Army Hall at Kameruka Street, Calamvale.

And didn’t they do it in style!! The fundraising dinner was in support of the rebuilding of a kindergarten devastated by Cyclone Winston earlier this year in Nausori, a remote village in Ra Province on the Island of Viti Levu, Fiji.

Ms Glen Palmer, a teacher from Corinda, Brisbane has been spearheading the Nausori Kindergarten Project. After spending some time in Fiji and witnessing the widespread devastation caused by cyclone Winston, she set up a website to raise funds for this cause. She contacted a few organisations for support, one of them being the Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary. The idea was floated across with the Rotary District and given the background of RCBF, it was deemed appropriate to present the idea to our club to see what support could be provided.

It was an honour for RCBF to partner with the Rotary Club

of Centenary to fundraise for this project and our club planned to have a fundraising Dinner evening on 04 Nov 2016. A traditional Indian theme became the flavour for the night as the dinner evening coincided with the popular Hindu festival, Deepawali (festival of lights). Another key highlight for the evening was a toast to Rotary International by our PR Director Mr Abdul Azam to commemorate its centenary, 100 years of Rotary.

In attendance to support the night were Local MP for Stretton, Hon Duncan Pegg, Owner of Brisbane Indian Times Mr Umesh Chandra, his wife Mrs Usha Chandra, who is also the President of GOPIO Qld, Ms Glen Palmer, District Governor Doug St Clair and his wife, Past District Governor Chris Wright and his wife members of Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary, Rotary Club of Wishart and Rotary Club of Brisbane Fiji. Cr Angela Owen-Taylor, Councillor for Calamvale Ward who could not attend in person sent a letter of support and her well wishes as well.

The traditional Indian theme for the night was highlighted with some favourite Bollywood numbers sung on karaoke by a local artist, a presentation by Mr Chandra showcasing the

significance of Deepawali while members of RCBF were joined by guests to perform Garba (traditional Gujarati dance).

While guests enjoyed their sumptuous dinner, a fine selection of home-made Indian food prepared by local chef, Pradeep, raffles were drawn for some fantastic prizes compliments of friends and supporters of RCBF. All in all, it was an amazing and successful night. RCBF President, Mr Jitendra Prasad, was particularly happy when DG Doug St Clair announced that RCBF would be formally chartered as a club at the next District conference in March 2017 at the Gold Coast. Mr Prasad’s vision has been to make a difference in the community and this announcement was certainly a step in the right direction.

The closer the holidays get, the higher the stress levels are, so be sure to reach reasonable agreements in advance if possible.

What works for one family, might not work for another family. Focus on what is in the best interest of your children and offer proposals that benefit the children, rather than what is convenient for you. You will have a better chance of reaching an agreement that both parents can live with and which benefit your relationship with your children.

So try to compromise and find solutions which are in the best interests of your children. After all, despite your differences as

The GOPIO Sydney North West Chapter team has been conducting Caring & Sharing events for the last 7 years, raising much needed funds for the less privileged in India and Australia. The chapter has also supported the victims of the Fiji cyclone and the Nepal earthquake.

GOPIO is an international non-partisan, secular global organisation engaged in promoting the wellbeing of People of Indian Origin, enhancing cooperation and communication among Indians living around the globe.

The GOPIO Sydney North West Chapter President, Prof. Balkar Singh Kang and his team - Sumit Joshi, Baljit Pelia, Parmjit Multani, Harmohan Singh Walia, Aman Singh, Neeru Singh, Amrit Buttar, Tia Singh, Sanjeet Hooda, Baljinder Singh and Ravi Singh have worked passionately towards the success of the 7th Caring & Sharing event. Such

events are a result of the spirit that we all have in us to care for the less privileged.

Therefore, the funds raised through these events become a symbol of hope for the needful.

During the night of great cause and fun unlimited, there were scintillating performances from the Shiamak Davar dance group, Phulkari dance group, BASS Bhangra group, Vinod Rajput, Jyoti Dixit and Dhamma Yoga kids that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Neeru Singh and Aman Singh, in their best attire, engaged the wonderful audience through their stage anchoring. Other attractions of the night, such as quiz prizes and a Facebook photo competition, attracted the zeal and enthusiasm of all the guests.

Australia and the support of the dedicated individuals in India have made it possible for the team to extend a helping hand to more than 3000 less privileged primary school children in India for the last 7 years. A few necessities that will be provided again to the primary school kids include warm clothes, shoes, socks, sports items and other basic commodities as per the requirements of the remote area schools. This year, the Caring & Sharing event not only raised funds for kids in India, but also gave donations to ‘Salt of the Earth Productions’ for a film on Indian heritage (written and directed by Anita Brar), the Cancer Council, the Heart Foundation and Tear Australia for their righteous causes.

Caringly, funds were also donated to Manmeet Sharma Alisher’s family in India.

GOPIO Europe Convention - Paris November 2016

GOPIO, Global Organization of People of Indian Origin is a community supported nonprofit organization that takes up issues of the Indian diaspora and attempts to unify the community in its common causes. GOPIO Europe chapter organized its Europe convention in Paris from 10th to 13th of November 2016.

The Convention started on 10th Thursday evening with the opening registration followed by welcoming delegates, special dinner at the Indian restaurant in Champs Elysees, Paris and ‘Discover LIDO’ show there after.

Panel discussions on various issues around the world by the experts, cultural programs, educational visits, get-togethers, award ceremony, book release, general body meeting etc were arranged as part of the convention.

GOPIO members from different countries including USA, Australia, South Africa, Mauritius, Austria and UK have actively participated in the Europe summit that lasted four days. Australian members included Noel lalfrom Sydney , Umesh Chandra, Prasd Yarladadda , Robin Jaggessar, Amy Jaggessar and Alka Jagessar from Brisbane.

The European Biannual Summit is one of the pivotal events in the global GOPIO program calendar. The theme of this summit, ‘Indiaspora, Opportunities beyond Frontiers’, conveys GOPIO’s thrust to mobilize diaspora’s technology and professional as well as the investment resources. Discussions on many important issues and topics of common interest were also carried out to gather more information in various fields.

As part of the program, a visit to the World War I memorial in Neuve Chapelle (North of France) had been arranged on Friday Morning to pay tribute to the Indian soldiers who were martyred in France. Mayor of Neuve Chapelle Mr. Roland Lieven, Mayor of Veile Chapelle Mr.Jean- Michel DESSE, Mayor of La Couture Mr. Raymond GAQUERE, Mayor of Laventie Mr. Jean Phillipe BOONAERT and mayor of LORGIES Mme Anne-Marie LEFEBVRE had attended the program. At the site of Neuve Chapelle (Richebourg), there now stands a memorial garden, circled by domed pavilions

and towering columns. It now forms a permanent reminder of the sacrifice of the soldiers of Indian Origin, our forefathers.

A documentary film ‘Mademoiselle France Pleure’ about Soldiers who were martyred in World War I, directed by Mr. Vijay Singh, was shown at the program.

Official inauguration of the convention took place on 11th Friday evening at 6.30pm by Indian Ambassador Dr. Mohan Kumar. The ambassador urged all the GOPIO members to concentrate on charity activities in India.

He said that GOPIO is a mature entity now and it is high time that we help our motherland in any possible way. Indian parliament member Dr. Satyajeeth Singh, Maharashtra assembly Chief Whip Raj K Purohit, GOPIO Global chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham, GOPIO Global vice chairman Noel Lal, GOPIO Europe Co-ordinator Dr. Pradip Sewoke and convention convener Mehan Poinoosamy delivered speeches at the function. GOPIO general body meeting took place on Sunday 13th Morning at the Marriot Hotel followed by a Paris sight-seeing leisure trip.

GOPIO Europe summit has made two resolutions. The first one was supporting Government of India in implementing demonetization of Indian Currency notes.

The resolution says that this attempt will help to reduce the black money and corruption in India. Second resolution was to request the French and Indian governments to support GOPIO International’s demand that the monument of Indian Soldiers at Neuve Chappelle should be recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. The whole summit attendees including GOPIO executive committee members accepted the resolution without any objection.

With India at the threshold of accepting new technologies and business investment, the new team has come up with a motto, ‘GOPIO Means Business’. This move would focus on attracting the entrepreneurs and businessmen among the Indian diaspora to take more interest in investing in India in all spheres ranging from business, philanthropy, education, healthcare and social causes.

GOPIO Europe convention organizing committee thanked everyone who made this Europe summit a big success and ensured that the committee will arrange many other programs in future to promote global unity and charity.

Bharatiya Divas 2017 Dr. António Costa, Prime Minister of the Republic of Portugal has accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, to be the Chief Guest at the 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention to be held from 7 to 9 January, 2017 at Bengaluru in Karnataka. “Bala Utsav” celebration by Bala Samskar Kendra – Queensland

By Mohan Halai BALA Samskar Kendra (BSK) is the children’s activity wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of Australia Inc. BSK Queensland has been conducting regular activities in Brisbane for the past six years. The objective of BSK is to impart Hindu cultural values, heritage and language to young children. The activities are conducted in an environment where the children feel that they are part of an extended family, can interact with their own age group and also learn from elders. A wide range of activities are conducted to provide all-round personal development, for example, Sanskrit shloka chanting, scripture class, language, yoga and games.

Children in this information age like to learn through joint participation and by doing things, so they all enjoy performing in dramas and dance. To satisfy this need, BSK Queensland conducts annual Bala Utsav’s. Through this activity the children also learn the Hindu scriptures and heritage as all the scripts are derived from them. The dances are also taught by professional classical dance teachers.

The BSK Queensland has been conducting the Bala Utsav celebrations for the last four years around the Diwali festival.

Over the years at least 60 children have performed and benefited through these Utsavs. Bala Utsav 2016 was held on 12 November 2016 at the Queensland Multicultural Centre, Kangaroo Point. The attraction of the Utsav was a drama, “Bharat Milap” and a skit “who broke Janaka’s bow” both from the Ramayan. The venue provided the children with a professional well equipped theatre. The Utsav was attended by over 150 guests. During the 2 hour program, the guests were well entertained by the children. All the performers for

the day were below the age of 15 years of age, however they all provided a professional performance.

This was evidenced by the numerous applauses and laughs throughout the show. All the participants put in a lot of effort and hard work in preparing for this event as the drama scripts were memorised and spoken by the children during the performance.

At the end of the performance all the participants were encouraged with Certificates of Participation.

Performers who excelled in various disciplines throughout the year, for example, shloka chanting and rangoli were appreciated. Special mention was also made of children who

showcased exceptional qualities throughout the year, for example sacrificing birthday gifts for a good cause.

Bala Utsav is the climax of all the activities for the year. After the Utsav children have a short breather in preparation for yet another year full of activity. That way our “sadhna” (endeavour) of nurturing disciplined, organised and knowledgeable children continues.

The SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMAS is a time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus more than 2,000 years ago.

To Christians and non-Christians alike, Christmas is a time for re-unions among family members and renewal of friendships among mates. It is a time to re-affirm our human capacity to forgive and reconcile with each other, building a new beginning in our lives.

In sharing their poignant moments of caring for each other tenderly, my friends have told me of episodes in their lives that are deeply touching. These stories also inspire our faith in the goodness of mankind. For “Love Came Down at Christmas” Jonathan remembers the time when his nephew had to make a choice between continuing his brilliant academic studies at university or to give up all his dreams of tertiary education to start working to support his struggling family. Jonathan, seeing the potential in his nephew, decided with the help of his two sisters, to support his nephew financially through university. Today, through sheer hard-work, his nephew is the regional General Manager of an expanding conglomerate. “It is so satisfying to see him and his young family prosper”, Jonathan mused. “It is most gratifying to know that he has not forgotten what we have done for him as he has taken us under his wing and is providing care www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4o6gqwwhnU

for us in our twilight years. His attitude of gratitude is exemplary!”

Fiona speaks wistfully of the precious time shared with her eldest brother who had to stay in an aged facility for a number of years.

Due to difficulties in mobility, he was unable to enjoy family Christmas lunches or dinners at home. Unknown to family members, Fiona lovingly cooked his favourite food and brought it to him on Christmas Eve. She had cherished moments with her beloved brother as they shared a simple meal together in total bliss.

Living far away in Hong Kong, Ai Ling’s only brother had to undergo an operation to remove a tumour attached to his stomach.

She was anxious as that operation would reduce his capacity for food intake quite drastically. Wishing to be at his side, she flew to Hong Kong with her daughter. The pure joy on her brother’s face was forever etched in her memory as they arrived unannounced at his bedside! Both stayed with him throughout his recovery, praying for God’s gracious help in overcoming each hurdle vital to his overall health. Together with his family, they lived through Heaven on earth as the tears, the mirth and love flowed in a sweet, sweet bond.

Yes, Christmas is a time of remembering, sharing and expressing the Love of God. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16

GCHCA News and Seasonal Greetings

GOLD Coast Hindu Cultural Association continue to take actions to build the Hindu Cultural Precinct in Gold Coast. The GCHCA committee has been busy in the background, working with number of local and state government officials with regard to various aspects of cultural precinct development. The ever elusive Building certifier approval is delayed due to minor changes to detailed architectural drawings and fine points in structural designing. Civil design, mechanical design, electrical design and landscape design are yet to be completed. We have so far managed to save over 300k in your donated money by getting our volunteers to do the professional work. Our volunteers are working hard using their personal hours as they have to meet their primary job targets in their own profession as well.

The Association has been working with the GCCC and State Government on grants which we will continue to endeavour. Many of us are continuing in the fund raising activities. We request all of you to contact your friends, relatives and any other contacts during this holiday season to raise funds. Hunt for Singapore’s best dancing star comes to an end

THE second season of Dance Singapore Dance comes to an end with a spectacular grand finale. Sheriden Newman, 29, danced her way to victory after emerging as the winner of Season 2. Sheriden, 29, a dance graduate from Queensland University of Technology outperformed over 200 contestants in the auditions and 11 others during the grueling 10 episode journey to take home the prize money of S$15000. Mohamad Sufri Juwahir and Mumtaz Angullia were the first and the second runner’s up and took home cash prizes of S$3000 and S$2000 respectively.

The runaway success of the first season set the stage for an even bigger canvas for the second season of Dance Singapore Dance.

There were many breath-taking moments as the level of performances soared episode after episode. Each contestant left no stone unturned to keep the audiences and judges captivated with their exceptional performances. The season started with a new panel of judges with Bollywood ace Choreographer Master Mudassar Khan all the way from Mumbai and popular local classical and contemporary dancer Sreedevy Sivarajasingam.

Guest judges on different episodes included Najip Ali (Host & Entertainer), Kavitha Krishnan (Artistic Director, Maya Dance Theatre), Daisy Irani (Creative Director & Actor, Hum Theatre), Shantha M Misra (Indian Classical Dancer and Choreographer) and Zaini Tahir, (Artistic Director and Dance Singapore Dance S1 judge) also provided their expert opinion as part of the judging panel.

Ms Tripta Singh, Senior Vice President, International Business, Zee TV APAC, said, “In the second season of Dance Singapore Dance the expectations were very high from all the stakeholders including the contestants, our partners and viewers and the show surpassed all of them. THE Global Organisation for Divinity (GOD) Australia, Brisbane Chapter hosted a series of three satsangs led by Poornimaji from November 25 to 27 in Brisbane.

On November 25, Poornimaji delivered a talk in Tamil, “Iraivinin Nama Mahimai” /“இறைவனின் நாம மகிமை”, at the Hindu Cultural Hub monthly congregation at Clayfield in Brisbane's inner northern suburbs.

This satsang was attended by Tamil speaking devotees of Indian and Sri Lankan origin as well as by a multi faith delegation from Sri Lanka. Poornimaji highlighted the role of the Naayanmaars and Aazhwaars in bringing to the forefront the Divine Naama as the ideal path to God in the Kaliyuga. She also highlighted that God is one, narrated stories from the charitra of Sundaramoorthy Nayanar.

The following day's satsang was held at Garden City Library Hall in south Brisbane where the devotees were enthralled by Poornimaji's lecture entitled “Pibare Raama Rasam- Gems from the Ramayana”. The key theme of this lecture was satsang mahima.

One of the examples was the story of Sugriva Pattabhishekam. Sugriva, who had nearly lost everything, simply by holding onto the feet of Hanumaan, eventually rose to be the

The final satsang was held on November 27 at the Gayathri Mandir, Boondall. The Ramayana theme continued as Poornimaji turned her attention to the great Saint Tulasidas, an epitome of Devotion. Like many mahaans, Tulasidas started his life very much rooted in worldly things. However, one incident changed his life, and endowed him with vairaagya, and he spent the rest of his life as a pious Raama bhaktha.

Ferry rides in Kochi commands a breathtaking view due to its lush green lawns sloping down to the water’s edge. Giant Chinese fishing nets that billow from massive teak and bamboo poles dot the entrance to the harbor. Silhouetted against the setting sun, they present a magnificent sight at the waterfront.

Houseboats are a unique way to experience the beauty of Cochin. The houseboats glide on the backwaters of Kochi, with panoramic view passing by.

Major tourist attractions are: Bolghatty Island - Bolghatty palace, built by the Dutch in 1744 for their governors and later used by the British governors is situated here. Today it is a Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) owned hotel.

Willington Island - This is situated in the backwaters and is named after the British viceroy to India, Lord Willington. The headquarters of the naval command, port trust, trading centers etc are located here.

Fort Kochi - A fishing village, Fort Kochi became a European trading center in the middle ages.

Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace) - This was built by some foreigners on Hindu architectural style in 1555.

St Francis Church - Built of wood in 1503, it may be the oldest European church in India. Vasco-da-Gama was buried here.

Kollam Backwaters Known as the entry and exit point of the backwaters of Kerala, Kollam is situated 71 km to the north of Thiruvananthapuram. It is one of the oldest ports of the Malabar coast and was once the center of international spice trade, especially known for its marine and cashew industries. It is also the Call 07 3865 6533

largest producer of cashew in the state.

30% of Kollam (Quilon) is covered by the renowned Ashtamudi lake and the eight-hour boat trip between Kollam and Alappuzha is the longest and most enchanting experience on the backwaters of Kerala. Tourist can visit Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram, a spiritual trust in India with a large number of educational, technical and health care industries is headquartered at Vallikkavu, near Kollam. Kumarakom Backwaters Kumarakom is situated 15 km from Kottayam, on National Highway (NH) 47 between Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and Kochi (Cochin). Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands located on the banks of the famous Vembanad Lake.

Havan – Fire Sacrifice HAVAN, which is translated as Fire Sacrifice, is an ancient Hindu ritual of offering oblations into the fire, Agni. Hindus have been performing it since Vedic ages starting about 4,500 BC (The Hindu History by AK Majumdar). It is performed during religious festivals, rites of passage and other important domestic and social events.

Buddhists and Jains also perform Havan according to their religious traditions. Swami Dayanand Saraswati invigorated the practice of Havan with a new zeal to empower Hindus with Vedic ideals.

Agni is one of eight Vasus, deities on the earth. It represents lightening in the atmosphere, sun in the sky and volcanic fire in the earth. It is also believed to be the mouth of all other deities. An oblation offered into the fire with a Mantra dedicated to a specific deity is delivered to that deity through the fire.

The Rig-Veda starts with adoration of Agni and a large number of hymns in all four Vedas are dedicated to it. In Vedic ages Havan was used to propitiate deities and then the sacred fire was used to clearing the land to make it suitable for human habitation and agriculture.

During the Ramayana period, king Dasarath performed Havan to be blessed with sons.

Highly accomplished and qualified sages with special skills were able to conduct such Havan.

During the fire sacrifice performed by king Janamejaya the Mahabharata story was first publicly told to him. The fire sacrifice was being performed to destroy snakes to avenge the death of his father king Parikshit by snakebite.

Pandavas used the sacred fire to clear the land in Khandavaprasta, the kingdom given to them

by Kaurava king Dhritrastra as their share.

The Havan fire is considered a divine purify-

ing agent and is used as a witness to undertaking pious pledges. Hindu wedding is solemnized in the presence of the sacred fire sanctified by Havan. Friendship pledges between Lord Ram and monkey king Sugreev were witnessed by the sacred fire produced by devotee Hanuman.

The ritual of Havan has been modified over time. During the Gurukul system of education, a twice born, Dwija, male used to bring home the fire from his graduation Havan. That fire was used until his death for performing his domestic Havan rituals. After his death the same fire was used for lighting his funeral pyre.

It is believed that Agni grants prosperity, removes misfortune and purifies surrounding atmosphere through performance of Havan.

After death it conveys physical elements of the body to their origins through cremation.

Earlier the Havan fire was ignited through rubbing of two pieces of wood. This technique is still used during performance of large scale Havan. The use of safety matches to kindle Havan fire has become normal in domestic environment.

The Hindu Scriptures prescribe specific items to be used in oblations. The items for oblations should be of good fragrance such as deodar and sandalwood. Nutritious eatables such as ghee, fruits and grains; items sweet in taste such as sugar, honey and sweetmeats, and herbaceous plants are also recommended for use in oblations. Certain types of wood are to be used for generating and sustaining the fire.

These requirements are now modified according to the availability of these items and their alternatives.

Usually a priest is engaged to assist in performing Havan in domestic situations. A Havan Kund to hold the fire is placed on the altar made for the purpose. Wood, ghee and

permarkets or shopping centres. You will not find reason in the gifts people may get for you.

Very soon all the excitements of the season will disappear if you failed to find the true reason for the season.

The Word of God teaches us that, in the fullness of time; meaning the right time in human history, Christ (The Anointed One) came to the planet earth. In the beginning Christ was creator and the Word of God. Creator became part of His own creation. The God becomes human and confines Himself to time and limitations of humanity.

Why would God do that?

Because, all humanity was separated from God due to sin. This sin resulted in all humans trying to live a life that was independent of God. All of us were born with an infected nature of sin due to the disobedience of our ancestors. Humanity was humiliated and defeated by the influence of sin, resulting in a broken relationship with a loving God and our Creator.

Only Christ could build a bridge to restore a broken relationship between humanity and God. So, in fullness of time Christ was born.

He grew in Wisdom and Stature and became a Supreme Sacrifice to Redeem us from the power of sin and death.

By faith, we connect with God in this season to celebrate His birth and become his child.

Can you hear Christ calling you personally in this season? Christ came to connect us with our Creator in a genuine personal relationship.

Religions demands set of rules, but relationship expresses itself in a perfect love.

So, my challenge to you in this season is, don’t just read these words and forget what you read, but ask God to restore a personal relationship with Him. When you believe in a God of Love, Joy and Peace; then God is no longer a concept or an image or an idol. When you open your heart to Christ in this Christmas season, like me you will know reason for the season. Your joy will be complete. Your spirit will be regenerated into a new creation.

Today, you can trust in the sure hope of His light. God’s light is so wonderful and merciful it will expel every darkness in your life. A heart full of God’s light is able to live a lifestyle without the fear of death and darkness. Let the Light and Love of Jesus reveal your true identity today. Please pray with a sincere heart, “Dear God I believe Jesus is the Reason for this Season, teach me to walk in your light and love. Thank you for restoring the broken relationship with you. Vedas and its knowledge OUR great law giver Maharishi Manu Ji has beautifully described Dharm as “Dhrati Kshama Damah Asteyam Shouchamindriyanigrhah Dhi vidya satyamakrodho dashakam dharma lakshanam” (Manusmriti 6.92) Which means that these ten signs symptoms/attributes/ characteristics indicative of Dharma are as follows: 1. Dhrati-Fortitude is reflected in the form of courage and strength when facing pains or troubles in life. It means the patience which is exhibited by a person even in case of difficulties of life.

2. Kshama-means ability to forgive and forget.

Forgiveness is not an attribute of a weak but only a spiritually strong, composed and broadminded person can forgive even his enemies for their misdeeds. People who are slaves of their own emotions and mood swings can never exhibit such an attribute and are unable to forgive even the small mistakes done by their best of the friends.

3. Damah-Control over mind and desires. All the decisions in life of a person should not be governed by his uncontrolled desires but should be taken by stable mind unaffected from worldly sensational cravings and emotions of attachment and fear.

4. Asteyam-Non stealing exhibited by the attributes like honesty and integrity. The person should believe in taking the ownership of only those things, which are earned by hard work and labour.

5. Shouch-Purity: indicates internal and as well as external purity. The person should not only take care of his body and surroundings for cleanliness but also should try to make his mind pure without any negative emotions, desires and attachments.

6. Indriya Nigrah-Control of sensory organs: Every human being percieves this world by five senses (indriya) given by GOD, which are Ears, Skin, Eyes, Tongue and Nose. Man percieves Shabd, Sparsh, Roop , Rasa, Gandh (Sound, Touch, Form, Taste and Smell) by the help of these sensory organs respectively. Control of all these senses and not allowing negative stimuli to make an impression in the items for oblations and related rites are made ready for Havan.

Oblations are offered into the fire in the Havan Kund with chanting of Mantras. In a traditional Hindu Havan, oblations are offered to both Vedic as well as Pauranic deities. Vedic deities are mostly natural objects deified such as Earth, Atmosphere, Sky, Rain, Fire, Air, Water, Sun, Moon, Creator, Vishnu, Rudra, etc. Pauranic deities refer to divine personalities such as Ganesh, Ram, Krishna, Laxmi, Durga and others.

Selection of Mantras from Vedic and Pauranic texts for Havan varies depending upon the preference of the priest and performer’s spiritual inclination.

grooves of the mind is called Indriya Nigrah (Sense Control). This art is also called Mind Control. Scriptures prescirbes various methods/yoga to achieve this. Meditation is one among thoses methods.

7. Dhi-Wisdom: indicates the power to discriminate between right and wrong. This helps a person while adhering to his Dharma and he can analyise and identify the right path to proceed irrespective of the difficulties in his way and tempetations to take an easier but wrong path.

8. Vidya-Knowledge: refers to the education as well as the practical knowlege about laws of life. The knowledge should always be crowned with humility. A person who is down to earth with humility is a real knowledgeable person.

9. Satyam-Truthfulness: The essence of life is seeking the truth and following the path of truthfulness. It not only helps a person in living a peaceful life but also acts as a strong spiritual armor providing strength to the person in most difficult situations of life.

10. Akrodh-Absence of anger: Which means the person is not angered under all circumstances and remain composed despite all the provocations. It is observed generally if we take a vow any day to not to be angry with anybody on any subject that day, Time test us hard on that very day and all the circumstances are built in such a way to provoke us to become angry. We should keep patient in such a scenario and prepare ourselves strongly for the victory of our will power over our emotions at the end of the day.

All the above 10 symptoms/attributes/ characteristics are the primary factors responsible to keep everything in harmony (dharma).

The person with the above attributes is a perfect person prepared completely for his journey to the Self Realization (Salvation).

This definition of dharma which is as relevant today as it was in the past. Everything pertaining to dharma should stand the test of Veda and logic says Maharishi Manu (Manusmriti 12/106). Acharya Brihaspati says "When there is a contradiction among the Smrities, treat Manu Smriti as authentic. But it should be taken like this only, when the Manu Smriti is in consonance with the VEDAS and not where it contradicts the Vedas-the divine knowledge of GOD." Prophet’s Mawlid...

Prepared by Imam M. Aslam ALL praise be to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. We will talk about the prophets Mawlid as our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw) and definitely organising and partaking in mawlid program is rahmat and mercy for all of us.

We say that Mawlid gatherings are an effective and efficient means for the purpose of calling people to sirate mustaqeem.and educate children, that these meetings give a golden opportunity that must not be lost, for every scholar and da`i to teach and remind the Nation of the Prophet of his good character, his way of worshipping, and his way of treating people. This is a way to make children love and remember their Prophet, in Mawlid Programmes.

The Obligation to Increase the Love and Honor of the Prophet Allah asks the Prophet, Peace be upon him, to remind his Nation that it is essential for those who claim to love Allah, to love His Prophet: “Say to them: If you love Allah, follow (and love and honor) me, and Allah will love you” (3:31).

The Mawlid of the Holy Prophet is motivated by this obligation to love the Prophet, Peace be upon him, to obey him, to remember him, to follow his example, and to be proud of him as Allah is proud of him, since Allah has boasted about him in His Holy Book by saying, “Truly you are of a magnificent character” (al-Qalam 4).

Love of the Prophet is what differentiates the believers in the perfection of their Iman. In an authentic hadith related in Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet said: “None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves his children, his parents, and all people.” In another hadith in Bukhari he said: “None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves himself” and Sayyidina `Umar said: “O Prophet, I love you more than myself.”

Perfection of faith is dependent on love of the Prophet because Allah and His angels are constantly raising his honor, as is meant by the verse already quoted, “Allah and His angels are sending salawat blessing on the Prophet” The Prophet Emphasized Monday as the Day He Was Born Abu Qatada al-Ansari narrates in Sahih Muslim, Kitab as-siyam, that the Prophet was asked about the fast of Monday, and he answered: “That is the day that I was born and that is the day I received the prophecy.”

We quote again from Mutawalli Sha`rawi: “Many extraordinary events occurred on his birthday as evidenced in hadith and history, and the night of his birth is not like the night of any other human being’s birth.” These events and the hadiths pertaining thereto, such as the shaking of Chosroes’ court, the extinction of the 1,000-year old fire in Persia, etc. are related in Ibn Kathir’s work al-Bidaya, Vol. 2, pages 265-268.

We quote from the book Kitab al-Madkhal by Ibn al-hajj (Vol. 1, p. 261): “It is an obligation that on every Monday of Rabi` ul-Awwal we increase our worship to thank Allah for what He gave us as a great favor–the favor of sending us His beloved Prophet to direct us to Islam and to peace… The Prophet, when answering someone questioning him about fasting on Mondays, mentioned: On that day I was born. Therefore that day gives honor to that month, because that is the day of the Prop… and he said: I am the master of the children of Adam and I say that without pride… and he said: Adam and whoever is descended from him are under my flag on the Day of Judgment. These hadiths were transmitted by the Shaikhayn [Bukhari and Muslim]. And Muslim quotes in his Sahih, the Prophet said, On that day Monday I was born and on that day the first message was sent to me.”

The Prophet emphasized the day of his birth and thanked Allah for the big favor of bringing him to life by fasting on that day as is men-

tioned in the hadith of Abu Qatada. This means that the Prophet was expressing his happiness for that day by fasting, which is a kind of worship. Since the Prophet emphasized that day by fasting, worship in any form to emphasize that day is also acceptable. Even if we change the form, the essence is kept. Therefore, fasting, giving food to the poor, coming together to praise the Prophet, or coming together to remember his good manners and good behaviour, all of this is considered a way of emphasizing that day. (See also the hadith “Dying on Monday” below.)

Allah Said: Rejoice in Allahs Mercy THIRD: To express happiness for the Prophet coming to us is an obligation given by Allah through Qur’an, as Allah said in Qur’an: “Of the favor and mercy of Allah let them rejoice” (Yunus 58).

This order came because joy makes the heart grateful for the mercy of Allah. And what greater mercy did Allah give than the Prophet himself, of whom Allah says, “We did not send you except as a mercy to human beings” (Al-Anbiya’ 107).

Because the Prophet was sent as a mercy to all mankind, that is why we have to rejoice.

The Prophet Celebrated Great Historical Events FOURTH: The Prophet always made the connection between religious events and historical events, so that when the time returned for a significant event, he reminded his sahaba to celebrate that day and to emphasize it, even if it had happened in the distant past. This principle can be found in the following hadith of Bukhari and others: “When the Prophet reached Madina, he saw the Jews fasting on the day of `Ashura’. He asked about that day and they told him that on that day, Allah saved their Prophet, Sayyidina Musa and drowned their enemy. Therefore they are fasting on that day to thank Allah for that favor.” At that time the Prophet responded with the famous hadith, “We have more right to Musa than you,” and he used to fast that day and the day preceding it.

The Obligation to Know Sira and Imitate Its Central Character SEVENTH: We are asked to know about our Prophet, about his life, about his miracles, about his birth, about his manners, about his faith, about his signs (ayat wa dala’il), about his seclusions, about his worship, and is not this knowledge an obligation for every Muslim? What is better than celebrating and remembering his birth, which represents the essence of his life, in order to acquire knowledge of his life? To remember his birth begins to remind us of everything else about him. This will make Allah happy with us because then we will be able to know the Prophet’s sira better, and be readier to take him as an example for ourselves, to correct ourselves, and to imitate him. That is why the celebration of his birthday is a great favor sent to us.

The Prophet Accepted Poetry in His Honor EIGHTH: In the time of the Prophet, it is well-known that poets came to him with all kinds of works praising him, writing about his campaigns and battles and about the sahaba. This is proved by the numerous poems quoted in the Siras of Ibn Hisham, al-Waqidi, and others. The Prophet was happy with good poetry since it is reported in Bukhari’s al-Adab al-mufrad and elsewhere that he said: “There is wisdom in poetry.” Thus the Prophet’s uncle al-`Abbas composed poetry praising the birth of the Prophet, in which are found the following lines: When you were born, the earth was shining, And the firmament barely contained your light, And we can pierce through, Thanks to the radiance and light and path of guidance.

This text is found in Suyuti’s Husn al-maqsid p.5 and in Ibn Kathir’s Mawlid p.30 as well as Ibn Hajar’s Fath al-Bari.

It is the weapon of du`a’. We know with certainty that Allah is Al-Mujeeb (The Responsive). We have read many articles telling us about the importance of du`a’, but in order for our du`a’ to be truly meaningful, we must accompany that du`a’ with a certain brokennessin the heart. This brokenness is the feeling of utter need, submission and surrender to Allah, and realizing that truly it is only He who can get us out of our state. In a beautiful hadith qudsi, Allah says: “O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another.

O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you, O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you.

O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you.

O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you.

O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My kingdom in anything.

(Muslim) Subhan’Allah (exalted is Allah), this hadith requires us to read it more than once to truly grasp its meaning. In essence, Allah is telling us that everything is from Him – He possesses this whole world and all that is in it, therefore we should seek all of our needs from Him. Allah has named Himself Al-Mujeeb, which means the One who responds. Just as we are certain that the Qur’an is true, we must be certain that Allah, Al-Mujeeb, will answer our call. We should never think that Allah will not answer, because by feeling so, we are denying this attribute (siffat) of Allah. Whenever we are feeling down, we should not hesitate to ask Him over and over again, and to go into sujood (prostration) and plead because that is the closest that we are to Him. If we realize this, the doors of mercy have been opened for us, because the Prophet said, “For whoever the door of du`a’ opened, for him the doors of mercy are opened.” (Tirmidhi).

Your du`a’ is deposited with Allah , and as was narrated from the Prophet , your du`a’ does something. Either Allah will speedily answer your du`a’ or He will save it for you until the Hereafter, or He will avert something bad equal to the value of the du`a’ (Ahmad). So we should never leave du`a’. The Prophet told us, “Do not stop making du`a’, because nobody who makes du`a’ is forsaken.” (Hakim)

The Prophet was therefore happy with those who praised him because it is Allah’s order, and he gave them from what Allah was providing him. If we get together and do something in order to approach the Prophet, we are doing something to approach Allah, and approaching the Prophet will make Allah happy with us.

The Prophet Emphasized the Birthday of Prophets NINTH: The Prophet emphasized in his hadith both the day and the place of birth of previous prophets. Speaking of the greatness of the day of Jum`ah (Friday), the Prophet said in his hadith: “On that day [i.e. Jum`ah], Allah created Adam.” This means that the day of Friday is emphasized because Allah created Adam on that day. That day is emphasized because it saw the creation of the prophet and father of all human beings. What about the day when the greatest of prophets and best of human beings was created? The Prophet said: “Truly Allah made me the Seal of prophets while Adam was between water and clay.” This hadith is related by Ahmad in the Musnad, Bayhaqi in Dala’il al-Nubuwwa and others, and is sound and established as authentic.

Why Bukhari Emphasized Dying On Monday Imam Qastallani said in his commentary on Bukhari: “In his book on Jana’iz (Funerals), Bukhari named an entire chapter “Dying on Monday.” In it there is the hadith of `A’isha relating her father’s (Abu Bakr as-siddiq) question: “On which day did the Prophet die?”

She replied: “Monday.” He asked: “What day are we today?” She said, “O my father, this is Monday.” Then he raised his hands and said: “I beg you, O Allah, to let me die on Monday in order to coincide with the Prophet’s day of passing.”

Imam Qastallani continues, “Why did Abu Bakr ask for his death to be on Monday? So that his death would coincide with the day of the Prophet’s passing, in order to receive the baraka of that day…

Does anyone object to Abu Bakr’s asking to pass away on that day for the sake of baraka? Now, why are people objecting to celebrating or emphasizing the day of the Prophet ‘s birth in order to get baraka?”

The Prophet Emphasized the Birthplace of Prophets A hadith authentified by the hafiz al-Haythami in Majma` al-zawa’id states that on the night of Isra’ and Mi`raj, the Prophet was ordered by Jibril to pray two rak`ats in Bayt Lahm (Bethlehem), and Jibril asked him: “Do you know where you prayed? When the Prophet asked him where, he told him: “You prayed where `Isa was born.”

The Ijma` of `Ulama on the Permissibility of Mawlid TENTH: Remembering the Prophet’s birthday is an act that all `ulama of the Muslim world accept and still accept. This means that Allah accepts it, according to the saying of Ibn Mas`ud related in Imam Ahmad’s Musnad with a sound chain: “Whatever the majority of Muslims see as right, then this is good to Allah, and whatever is seen by the majority of Muslims as wrong, it is wrong to Allah.”

The same is true of all gestures that are similar to these, and we consider this to muster the general agreement of scholars, as opposed to giving up one’s food and drink other things related to one’s personal lot: to give those up is a most desirable thing, one of the marks of the righteous and among the manners of saints and agnostics, concerning which this verse was revealed: “They prefer others above themselves though poverty become their lot” (59:9).

Prophet Muhammad (saw) was sent as an example for all and had the best conduct and manners out of the whole mankind. May Allah Ta’aala give us the hidayaat to love and respect Muhammad (saw) as well as follow his traditions and Sunnah.

(Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi) Remember: our Lord is not forgetful. Sometimes you might even forget that you once made du`a’ for something, but He might give it to you years later.

No answer?

We must always have certainty that Allah answers. But sometimes doubt enters one’s heart: “…But I asked, I made du`a’… and I don’t see anything?” Firstly, just as we know that Allah is Al-Mujeeb, we must also know He is Al-Hakeem (the Most Wise).

He may delay answering your prayer for a number of reasons; one is to test your trust in Him. We all say we believe Allah is the Al-Mujeeb when everything lands at our feet, but what about when we don’t immediately see the fruits of our du`a’?

I knew a woman who was telling the story of how her husband did not pray. When she married him, she didn’t know, and as the marriage progressed she discovered that he was skeptical of religion as well. So she would wake up every night for qiyam al-layl (the night prayer) and plead with Allah to guide Him. Do you know how long she prayed for? Two years. And she says it was so unexpected; he came home from a business trip with a complete change of heart. It turns out that on the plane he was seated next to a great sheikh who began talking to him. And that is how he changed.

Another reason is that Allah knows when it is best to answer. Perhaps you are asking for a job and He could give you a job at this very moment, but He will delay it because He knows that in a couple of months, a better job will come along. Perhaps what you are asking for is not good for you, or He will give you something better in the Hereafter.

Allah also may delay the answer to make us work harder so we are prepared for it. If we look at Palestine, we may think, “Wow, the Muslim Ummah prays so much and we don’t see anything changing.” But in truth, although the majority of the Ummah prays intensely during Ramadan, many do not make du`a’ with true pleading. It is almost an afterthought. And if we do (such as when we see the carnage that happened in Gaza)

we do not follow up our words by utilizing the means to change the situation; we forget (as is happening now). There are some genuine people who work for change, but they are a minority. So we need to be patient because we need to know that Allah is training the Ummah. The answer is being delayed so that we become worthy of this task.

There is a beautiful hadith qudsi which states that Allah sometimes delays the answer because He loves hearing the sound of His servant (AtTabari). Many of us would ask and then when we get what we want we stop going to Allah ; but imagine that when the answer is delayed, Allah loves to hear YOUR voice again as you call Him. Wow. Allah does not place a burden on us greater than we can bear. If the answer to your du`a’ has been delayed, it’s because Allah KNOWS you can handle it. He tests those whom He loves, so keep asking and remember that Allah makes with hardship ease. And remember, as with tawakkul, we need to exert effort as well.

Four conditions Ibn Al-Qayyim said he who fulfills the following conditions should know that Allah will surely answer his du`a’: 1. Have certainty that Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala will answer your du`a’. The Prophet said, “Ask Allah with certainty that He will answer your prayers.” (Tirmidhi) 2. Show submissiveness and devotion during your du`a’. The Prophet said, ‘Know that Allah will not accept the supplication from an absent heart.’ (Tirmidhi) 3. Be patient and do not hasten for an answer. The Prophet said: ‘The du`a’ of any worshipper will continue to be responded to, as long as… he is not hasty’ i.e. as long as he doesn’t lose patience.

By Mazhar Sayeed MINT LEAVES - Called ‘Menta Avensis’ or ‘Menta Acuantica’ MINTS are hardy, rapidly growing perennial plants native to Europe and Asia. Peppermint, one of the most widely grown and used forms, is a hybrid of spearmint. It is also a type of mint called water mint and has stronger properties than either of its parent plants. Ancient Greeks and Romans used mint leaves to relieve pain, and mint has been used in natural medicine to alleviate indigestion for nearly as long. Modern scientific studies have uncovered a variety of potential health benefits for mint.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Mint leaves are widely used as a digestive aid.

Peppermint leaf oil relaxes the muscular lining of the digestive tract, relieving cramps and gas and alleviating indigestion, according to naturopath Michael T. Murray, author of "The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods." A double-blind study published in the May 2010 issue of the journal "Digestive Diseases and Sciences" found that entericcoated peppermint oil significantly reduced abdominal pain and improved the quality of life for patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Participants took one capsule of the mint supplement three times per day for eight weeks.

Anti-Cancer: Mint may offer anticancer benefits by virtue of its peryllyl alcohol, one of its constituent compounds. A tissue culture study published in the August 2012 issue of the journal "Biochimie" found that peryllyl alcohol may inhibit prostate cancer cell growth and reproduction by destabilizing its DNA structure. The compound may also help prevent liver Cancer, according to a study published in the August 2012 issue of the journal "Current Cancer Drug Targets." Researchers theorize that this and similar compounds, including carotenoids and retinoids, may act by blocking the action of cancer-causing substances in the liver.

Allergies: Mint contains high levels of

rosmarinic acid, an antioxidant that quenches free radicals and reduces allergy symptoms by inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. A study published in the 2004 issue of the journal "Biofactors" found that 50 milligrams of rosmarinic acid per day for 21 days reduced levels of allergy-related white blood cells, called eosinophils, and inflammatory molecules and decreased allergy symptoms significantly. In a laboratory animal section of the study, topical application of rosmarinic acid reduced skin inflammation within five hours. Researchers concluded that rosmarinic acid may offer benefits for the treatment of seasonal allergies due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Procedure: Mix water with Mint leaves paste, add 5 drops of lemon, add one spoon (zeera) Cummins and add little salt. Add Dry Ginger powder and Pepper powder. Drink half glass juice around 11 am so that you can eat your lunch freely. It is good for morning sickness for pregnant ladies.

HIV is still here

By Fungisai Siggins What is World AIDS Day? WORLD AIDS Day is celebrated around the world on the 1st December each year. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on and show their support for people living with HIV. It also gives people a chance to celebrate victories, such as increased access to treatment and prevention services.

Why is World AIDS Day important?

Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 70 million people have been infected with the HIV virus. Globally, 36.7 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2015. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

HIV is still here About 27, 000 people are living with HIV in Australia. There is an estimated 4,500 people

living with HIV in Queensland. In 2014 246 people were diagnosed for the first time in Queensland.

Recent studies indicate that HIV infection rates in Australia are gradually increasing highlighting the need to remind people that HIV is still a problem that continues to pose challenges in Australia, not just overseas.

This is a reminder to us that HIV is still here.

What is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)?

It is a very small organism that exists in blood, sexual fluids and breast milk. It can be spread through blood, sexual contact and breast feeding but doesn’t spread through food, drinks, kissing, hugging, shaking hands, kissing, mosquitoes and other social contacts.

HIV weakens the body’s defence (immune) system so people get sick easily from other diseases and it can be passed on from one infected person to another.

What is Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)?

AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection after many years of infection, in the absence of treatment. It develops when the HIV infection is very advanced. At this stage the body can no longer defend itself and may develop various diseases, infections. If left untreated, it can cause death. AIDS cannot be transmitted between people.

Staying healthy in the heat PROLONGED hot weather can affect anybody. It may make existing medical conditions worse and can cause heat-related illness. In some cases heat effects may be fatal. It may also affect community infrastructure such as power supply and other support services. So it is important to know how to stay healthy in hot weather.

Who is at risk?

All Queenslanders are at risk during periods of hot or prolonged high temperatures, however some people are at a higher risk of harm.

This includes: • the elderly-especially those who live alone • babies and very young children • pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers • people who suffer from a pre-existing medical condition-such as diabetes, kidney disease or mental illness • people who take certain medications - such as allergy medicines (antihistamines), blood pressure and heart medications (beta-blockers), fluid tablets (diuretics) and anti-depressant or anti-psychotic medications. If you take medication, consult with your doctor for more information • people with an alcohol or drug problem • people with mobility problems or disability, who may not be able to identify or communicate their discomfort or thirst • people who are physically active-such as manual workers and people who play sport.

Preparing for a heat wave • Check air-conditioning at your home has been serviced and is working effectively.

• Ensure you have an enough food, water, medicines and toiletries to avoid going out in the heat.

• Store foods and medicines at a safe temperature. Read our food safety information to find out more.

• Consider your options if the heat wave causes a loss of electricity or disrupts public transport.

• Ensure you have a torch, fully charged mobile phone or a telephone that will work without electricity, a battery operated radio and sufficient batteries.

• Find ways to make your home cooler-such as installing awnings, shade cloths or external blinds on the sides of the house facing the

sun. Dark metal shutters and dark curtains may absorb heat and make the room warmer and should be avoided. The use of pale curtains or reflective materials is better.

Coping during prolonged heat • Keep hydrated by drinking water regularly during the day. This generally means drinking two to three litres of water a day, depending on heat, humidity and your physical activity.

• If your doctor normally restricts your fluid intake, check how much to drink during hot weather. Drinking too much water can also be dangerous, so monitor the colour of your urine. It is recommended that your water consumption should ensure that your urine is light yellow.

• Avoid drinking drinks with high levels of sugar, caffeine and alcohol and very cold drinks.

• Eat smaller cool meals, such as salads. Do not take additional salt tablets unless prescribed by a doctor.

• Keep yourself cool. Use wet towels or scarves, put your feet in cool water or take cool (not cold) showers. Stay indoors in cool or air-conditioned facilities-either at home or at local shopping centres, libraries and cinemas.

• Close curtains and blinds, and open windows (if there is a cool breeze blowing) to reduce heat entering your home.

• Avoid strenuous outdoor activities. If you can't avoid outdoor activities don’t go out in the hottest part of the day, stay in the shade, drink plenty of water and wear a hat and light coloured, loose fitting clothing. Ensure infants and children do too.

• Do not leave children, adults or animals in parked vehicles, even for a short period of time.

• Keep in touch with sick or frail friends, neighbours and relatives to ensure that they are coping with the heat wave conditions.

• Watch or listen to news reports for information about the heat event or heat wave.

Current situation and trends in the world and Australia • Antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment is free for people with a Medicare Card in Australia. Currently all people living with HIV in Queensland can access free HIV treatment, with or without a Medicare card.

• The number of facilities providing testing and counselling continue to increase.

• ART coverages among all age groups. Almost 13.6 million HIV-positive people had access to ART in low- and middle-income countries in 2014.

• Prevention of mother-to-child transmission.

Globally, about 73% of the pregnant women living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries received at least some effective antiretroviral drugs in 2014 to prevent motherto-child transmission. In Australia, mother to child transmission is very low.

Prevention There is no vaccination for HIV, and also there is no cure. It is very important to use the following methods to protect you and others.

• Condoms Condoms remain the cheapest and most accessible method to prevent sexually transmitted HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STI).

• Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) Post-exposure prophylaxis, commonly referred to as PEP, is a 4-week course of antiHIV drugs that may prevent HIV infection.

To be most effective, PEP should be started as soon as possible after exposure to HIV preferably within 72 hours.

PEP can only be prescribed by doctors at sexual health clinics and Emergency Departments in major hospitals. Some GPs with HIV training can also prescribe HIV medicine. You can find details at www.qpp.org.au • PrEP Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a new

HIV prevention strategy. PrEP is the use of antiretroviral drugs, taken by HIV negative people to prevent HIV infection. PrEP is taken on an ongoing basis and it provides protection against HIV. How to avoid paying LMI Save for a higher deposit The purpose of LMI is to protect lenders in case the borrower fails to make repayments and, when the loan-to-valuation ratio (LVR) exceeds 80 per cent, so the loan amount is more than 80 per cent of the value of the property being mortgaged, the risk of a lender not recouping their costs should the borrower default is increased. A higher de-

posit means a smaller loan amount, so will decrease the LVR and the perceived risk, and may be the key to avoiding paying LMI. Get a guarantor If you don’t have the financial capacity to meet a 20 per cent deposit but still want to avoid LMI, you do have the option of getting a guarantor on your loan. Have you found ‘the one’? The perfect agent – well-dressed, punctual, knowledgeable – to sell your property?

Once you appoint said agent, the honeymoon period begins.

But what can you do to keep your new business relationship super sweet?

As listing agents are integral to a good home sale (or buy) experience, what keeps your agent hook-up working right up to that final settlement payment?

8 ways to build a successful relationship with your agent We spoke to three agents around Australia to get their tips and tricks on making your agent/vendor relationship work.

Here are their 8 tips to make sure you stay sweet with your agent.

1. Never break trust It’s easy to fixate on agents’ trustworthiness and forget trust runs both ways.

Gold Coast agent Michael Levonis of Elliott Michaels Realtor says trust must exist at the start of every agent/client relationship and remain rock solid throughout.

2. Show some respect Craig Williamson of Buxton Bentleigh in Melbourne stresses mutual respect goes a long way to creating “win/win” relationships.

Clients usually do best when buying and selling if they view their agent as “a trusted advisor”, he says.

“They keep us on side with an attitude of mutual respect, referring us business and running with our advice on selling strategy,” Williamson says.

“It stands to reason that we would favour our loyal advocates.”

3. Stop being a control freak “A good agent is open to suggestions and happy to incorporate the seller’s ideas into the marketing strategy, but please allow the agent to do what he/she does best,” Levonis says.

He cites a recent client who insisted on absolute control of advertising copy and photographs.

“The resultant advertising didn’t reflect the true condition of the property and oversold the benefits,” he reports.

became upset and blamed the agent.”

4. Pick up the phone Justin O’Brien, manager of Elders Alice Springs, loves it when a client rings him, particularly when the campaign hits tough times.

“We live in an age of emailing and that is usually fine for simple matters but they (emails) can easily be taken the wrong way as you can’t hear tone,” O’Brien says.

“Face-to-face or a call are far more effective in some circumstances.”

5. Don’t be a scrooge If you insist on agents discounting their commissions, don’t be surprised if your agent loses interest and/or feels unloved.

Less commission can result in rushing sales and more pressure on sellers to take unacceptable offers, instead of working on a seller’s behalf, Levonis says.

“Until the property is sold, your agent is working for you for free.

“So if the agent is professional and does a good job marketing and selling your property, he/she deserves to be paid and not have to discount commission.”

6. Be punctual It is a common courtesy to be on time at all appointments with your busy agent and if you can’t be there, never pull a no-show. Not cool.

7. Don’t cover your ears Relationships can be tested and that’s when really good listening skills can save the day.

“Listen to what the agent is saying,” suggests O’Brien.

“When an agent tells you, ‘we are getting feedback that the price is too high’ don’t automatically shut down or get defensive because that is very counter to what your agent, hopefully chosen based on trust, is trying to achieve – hear them out.”

8. Be honest If you are looking to buy, Levonis says give sales agents “all your parameters” so he/she can assist without wasting time.

“There is a tendency for buyers not to tell the truth about how much they want to spend or the area they wish to buy in,” Levonis says.

“The agent then takes time to find a property in the price range only to find out the buyer has bought elsewhere in a higher price bracket and a different area.”

If you are guilty of this one, don’t expect a second date with ‘the one’.

Moving is a tough job at the best of times – let alone on a stinking hot day.

But with a little preparation, you can avoid getting hot under the collar.

Glen Christie, owner of Beetlebox, a company which rents green plastic boxes to people moving, knows more about shifting house than most.

He shares his top tips for moving in the heat.

Before the move Organise for pets and kids to be somewhere else on moving day.

“This will make your job easier,” Christie says.

“In the lead-up to moving day, pack as much as you can into boxes, saving time on the big day.

“Try to get your removalist to give you the first time slot of the day.”

They usually start at 7.30am or earlier, and you want to be moving at full speed by then, so you can avoid as much of the 11am-3pm period, the hottest part of the day,” Christie says.

“Make sure you have all your boxes in the front room before moving day arrives, so you or the movers can be as efficient as possible,” he says.

“Ensure the power is connected and any air-

conditioning is working at the new place.”

On moving day Hydration is important.

“Water is ideal, but electrolytic beverages are great too. Avoid energy drinks, cola and too much coffee, as they don’t help much with hydration and are diuretic as well,” he says. “Save the alcohol for when you’re all moved in!”

“Pre-hydrate with a few cups of water, eat a big breakfast, a light lunch and snack throughout the day,” Christie says.

“Also have some nuts and fruit on hand.

This way, you keep your tank full and avoid the post-lunch lull.”

Get started early and plan to take a break during the hottest part of the day, Christie says.

“Even if you use removalists, make sure you move a couple of boxes yourself with essentials, such as a change of clothes, toiletries, important documents and some drinking water, so you have them on hand.”

Ensure boxes with electronics are not left in direct sunlight for a long time.

“Get some fans set up in your new home first thing,” Christie says.

Use shade, like trees and canopies, to help to stay out of direct sunlight when moving, he says. Wear a vented hat and don’t forget sunscreen.

“Choose lightweight clothing made from organic materials such as cotton, as they breathe better than synthetic material.”

Enjoy an ice-cold beverage when it’s all done.

Revealed! When Shah Rukh Khan feels ‘the happiest’

BOLLYWOOD star Shah Rukh Khan is busy shooting for his upcoming film Raees and the actor recently revealed that it is on the film’s set that he ‘feels the happiest’.

The King of Bollywood took to Twitter to share with his fans his joyful moment.

“Raees Trailer out in 3 days.

Feel the happiest when I am on ‘Raees’ set. My highlite of the day,” he posted along with a charming selfie.

The 51-year-old is seen wearing a quoted t-shirt that reads Battery nahi Bolne ka. In a previous post, the

actor shared that the film’s ‘beautiful AD team’ got him this t-shirt. “Raees late nite shoot & our beautiful AD team gets me the t shirt which says it all for Raees in the film.”

On a related note, the Dear Zindagi star recently revealed in an interesting clip that the much awaited trailer of his upcoming flick released on December 7, where he has also invited fans for interaction during the trailer launch event.

The movie is slated to release on January 26 next year.

Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Remo set for a Bollywood remake?

IF the industry grapevine is anything to go by, the recent Tamil hit Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Remo will most likely be remade in Hindi.

At the success meet of the film’s Telugudubbed version, lensman P.C. Sreeram hinted about the film’s Hindi remake.

“Talks have been going on for Hindi remake since the release of the Tamil version. However, nothing has been finalised yet,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. Directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan, the film narrates the story of a wastrel who, in the disguise of a nurse, tries to win over the woman of his dreams.

The film recently completed its 50-day run

in cinemas.

Raagdesh script is as powerful as Rang De Basanti: Kunal Kapoor

ACTOR Kunal Kapoor has started filming his forthcoming period film Raagdesh, a project which he says is so powerful it reminded him of his blockbuster Rang De Basanti.

Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film is based on the Red Fort trials of 1945.

“Tigmanshu is an amazing director. I think it is one of the most powerful scripts I’ve read after Rang De Basanti. It is the fastest I’ve said yes to a film. I read the script and called in five seconds, hoping he doesn’t change his mind,” Kunal told reporters on 5 December.

The actor said it has been an amazing year for him so far, playing characters in different era, making him feel he is “time travelling”.

It has been quite a travel,” he said.

The 39-year-old actor walked the ramp at the Van Heusen GQ Fashion Nights, looking dapper in a blazer.

Kunal said he always enjoyed walking the ramp and when it comes to style, his icon is Sanjay Dutt.

Record breaking night for Indian Actors at 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards

BRISBANE, Australia: Manoj Bajpayee won Best Performance by an Actor narrowly beating Nawazuddin Siddiqui who was awarded a Special Mention in the same category at the 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Winners in the 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the region’s highest accolade in film, were announced at a glittering ceremony in Brisbane (24 Nov). Hosted by Australian actor David Wenham and presenter Anjali Rao, the 2016 Awards marked the 10th year of APSA recognising and promoting cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the world’s fastest growing film region: comprising 70 countries and areas, 4.5 billion people, one third of the earth and responsible for half of the world’s film output.

In addition, a Jury Grand Prize Special Mention was awarded to 8 year-old Sunny Pawar from India for his incredibly nuanced portrayal of the young Saroo Brierley in Garth Davis’ Lion. In an interesting coincidence, Sunny shared screen time in Lion with both APSA Ceremony host David Wenham, and Best Performance by an Actor Special Mention winner Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Manoj Bajpayee won Best Performance by an Actor for his performance as Professor Siras in Aligarh, the powerful and personal drama based on true events. Bajpayee was at the ceremony to receive the award. This is his second APSA nomination, following a nomination for Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012.

APSA International Jury member Jan Chapman said “it was superb, such a moving performance, I was really affected by the humanity and the depth” while fellow Juror Shyam Benegal said “He gave such an extraordinarily fine performance, extremely well delineated with lots of little detail that he put into the performance, an extremely well crafted role.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui received a Special Mention in the same category for his role in Anurag Kashyap’s Psycho Raman.

President of the APSA International Jury Lord Puttnam said the competition was so close between the actors, the International Jury awarded a Special Mention to actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui for his outstanding performance in Anurag Kashyap’s Psycho Raman (Raman Raghav 2.0). It was a very long discussion for the Jury.”

Lord Puttnam said “Over the last two weeks the APSA International Jury has viewed 24 films that between them have lasted almost 50 hours and it’s been a remarkable privilege to find yourself looking into customs, societies, attitudes and practices that you are not necessarily familiar with, and all of us on the Jury found that incredibly rewarding.

“There were two significant things I came away with: number one was how often the issue of family occurred, the importance of family and the role of family, is an underlying theme that popped up time and time again. The other that I found really encouraging was the quite extraordinary quality of the male performances. I have never seen that number of absolutely outstanding male performances - ever. Anywhere.”

The 2016 APSA International Jury comprised five eminent former APSA Jury Presidents hailing from three continents, headed by acclaimed Academy-Award® winner Lord Puttnam of Queensgate CBE (United Kingdom, APSA 2010 Jury President), joined

by APSA Patron and co-founder and current Chairman of the Busan International Film Festival Kim Dong-Ho, prolific and multiaward winning producer from Hong Kong (PRC) Nansun Shi (APSA 2011), Palme d’Or and Academy Award®-winning Australian producer Jan Chapman (APSA 2012), and celebrated Indian master filmmaker Shyam Benegal (APSA 2013).

APSA Best Feature Film was awarded to Turkish film Cold of Kalandar (Kalandar Soğuğu, Turkey, Hungary) produced by Nermin Aytekin and co-produced by Ivan Angelusz and János Rózsa. The film also won Achievement in Cinematography for Cevahir Şahin and Kürşat Üresin and director Mustafa Kara, for his second feature film was awarded the Inaugural APSA Young Cinema Award, presented by NETPAC and Griffith Film School. This new and important Award launched in recognition of the APSA 10th anniversary to honour emerging talent from the region, eligible to directors of debut or sophomore feature narrative films in feature competition. Nermin Aytekin, Mustafa Kara and Cevahir Şahin were all in attendance to accept the awards.

The APSA Cultural Diversity Award, under the Patronage of UNESCO was awarded to director Hussein Hassan for The Dark Wind (Reşeba, Iraq, Qatar, Germany), a film which exposes the dreadful reality of the Yazidi (an ethno-religious group practicing Yazdanism) trying to live and love under the shadow of ISIS in the face of intolerance and ignorance. Hassan, who travelled from Iraqi Kurdistan to accept the award, also starred in Shawkat Amin Korki’s Memories on Stone, winner of the 2014 APSA UNESCO Award.

International Jury member Nansun Shi (Hong Kong PRC) said “The Dark Wind is a wonderful film, but very sad. Coming to these Awards, I had not realised the subject matter of the Yazidis, and we wanted to highlight this to the world, and bring more attention to these people.”

APSA Achievement in Directing was awarded to Chinese master and APSA Academy member Feng Xiaogang for his remarkable and incredibly original feature I Am Not Madame Bovary (Wo Bu Shi Pan Jinlian), his 16th directorial work. Feng was nominated in the same category in 2010 for Aftershock, which won the APSA for Best Feature Film that year.

APSA Best Screenplay was awarded to Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Tadashi Nohara, Tomoyuki Takahashi for Happy Hour (Japan), for, as Lord Puttnam remarked, “its sheer scale and energy”.

In the 10th APSAs, the International Jury were incredibly impressed by the standard and quality of performances, resulting in a very tight competition for the acting achievements.

Best Performance by an Actress was awarded to young actress from the Philippines Hasmine Killip for her extraordinary performance in Ordinary People (Pamilya Ordinaryo) as a 16 year-old homeless mother living on the streets of chaotic Manila.

The Jury awarded two Jury Grand Prizes and one Special Mention.

The first Jury Grand Prize went to acclaimed and iconic Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung who has had a remarkable, broadranging and bold career spanning nearly 50 years was honoured for her role in The Bacchus Lady (Jug-yeo-ju-neun yeo-ja, Republic of Korea), which stunned the International Jury for its dignity and subtlety. APSA International Jury member Kim Dong-ho said “the role was very difficult, and her performance was outstanding.”

The second Jury Grand Prize was awarded to Cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bing for his work in Yang Chao’s Crosscurrent (Chang Jiang Tu), which Lord Puttnam commented “we were looking at something we all agreed was breathtaking.” This is Ping-bing’s second APSA Achievement in Cinematography Award following last year’s win for Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s The Assassin, and previous nominations for Tran Anh Hung’s Norwegian Wood (2011) and Jiang Wen’s The Sun Also Rises (2007).

The APSA Youth, Animation & Documentary International Jury was chaired by film critic, author and expert festival programmer Chris Fujiwara (USA) together children’s arts and education advocate Nira Benegal (India) and former APSA International Jury member, writer, and feature and documentary filmmaker Christoph Shaub (Switzerland) whose appointment highlights the ten-year relationship between the European Film Academy (EFA) and APSA. They awarded APSA Best Youth Feature Film to The World of Us (Woorideul, Republic of Korea), produced by Lee Changdong and Kim Soon-mo. Lee Chang-dong has previously won APSAs for Best Feature Film for Secret Sunshine (Miryang, 2010) and Achievement in Directing for Poetry (Shi, 2010) and his films have received a total of seven APSA nominations.

Jury Chair Chris Fujiwara said “We were very struck by the film because it is so rare to see films about a group of girls of primary school age, the film depicted the power relationships between these girls, their longing to be accepted and their desire to have social prestige. All of these things were really beautifully portrayed in this film and it was a very, very moving film about the longing for friendship and acceptance.”

Best Animated Feature Film went to Seoul Station (Seoul-yeok Republic of Korea), a unique mix of zombie horror and social criticism produced by Lee Dong-ha, Suh Youngjoo, Yeon Sang-ho.

“We were struck most of all by the film’s social and political critique which is directed at the authoritarian function of the police and the authority structure of the patriarchal family. We thought the film was quite successful in making this critique through the zombie narrative as a vehicle, and the animation was very skilfully done,” Fujiwara said.

Best Documentary Feature Film was awarded to Starless Dreams (Royahaye Dame Sobh, Islamic Republic of Iran) produced by Mehrdad Oskouei.

“Starless Dreams is an absolutely devastating film emotionally and an extraordinary piece of work by the director who was able to win the trust of these girls. It is an affirmation of the power of cinema in the sense that it is cinema that allows these girls to achieve some kind of transcendence of their situation, to achieve some kind of honest expression of who they are and their worth as human beings. A very, very moving film,” Fujiwara said.

GANGA Prasad has had another successful championship which saw him win another 6 medals. The Pan Pacific Masters Athletics Championship was held at Runaway Bay Athletics Stadium in the Gold Coast from November 5-13.

The medals won at this championship see him closer to his target of 2,000 medals. He won 1 Silver and 5 Bronze medals and also featured in finals in 6 other events. Ganga is definitely an all-rounder having competed in Javelin, Shot Put, Discus, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, Weight throw, Hammer throw, 60m and 100m runs and Weight Pentathlon (has 5 weights throw events).

Athletes who competed were from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands, Tonga, Samoa, India, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Japan, Canada, USA, PNG, Cook Islands and some other Pacific Island Nations.

Ganga told BIT that there are more competitions in the beginning of 2017 and he is confident of reaching his 2,000 medals target.

INDIA’S limited overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will hopefully get a chance to play at least a couple of warm-up matches before the England ODI series starting in Pune on January 15, next year.

Before the start of the limited overs series, England are scheduled to play a warm-up matches (50 overs) against an India A on January 10 and 12 at the CCI ground in Mumbai.

Dhoni, who has not been playing since the home series against New Zealand in October, would have gone into the ODI series without proper game time for 77 days.

Dhoni has been training regularly with the Jharkhand Ranji team which has qualified

future competitions.

Anil Kumble says Parthiv Patel did a brilliant job as opener in Mohali Test

ANIL Kumble heaped praise on wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel, who came back to the Indian Test team after a gap of eight years in Mohali, for shouldering the responsibility of opening the innings and doing the job “brilliantly”.

“Parthiv came in after eight years and did not really show nerves you would expect, although he is a seasoned campaigner. He was asked to open he did that brilliantly and also kept wickets very well. He was not worried about failing,” Kumble told reporters.attending the match.

“I was really pleased that he could walk into that match and not just keep wickets and bat at six or seven. When you are making a

comeback after eight years you always want to do well for yourself and here is Parthiv who was willing to put his hands up when asked to open. That shows his character. I am pleased with that,” he added.

Parthiv struck 42 and 67 not out in the two innings at Mohali and Kumble felt he had never lost faith that could make a comeback.

“Even when he came into the team first as 17 or 16 year old, he still looks 16 if he shaves his beard off, he showed lot of maturity first time he saved a Test match for India.

It certainly shows if you are putting hard yards in domestic cricket, never losing your faith and believing that you can make a comeback, it’s possible,” Kumble said. HT

Mahendra Singh Dhoni may feature for India A in warm-up games against England

for the knock-out stages of the Ranji Trophy.

However JSCA secretary Rajesh Verma had made it clear that Dhoni was only a ‘mentor’ to the team and will not be donning whites since he has already retired from Test cricket.

It will be interesting to see whether the selectors also pick young Rishabh Pant as a back-up or a pure wicketkeeper knowing his big hitting skills in domestic cricket.

It will not be a bad idea if both Dhoni and his heir apparent play in the same game which could be a treat for the handful who will be attending the match.

Why Roger Federer, Serena Williams will miss India leg of IPTL 2016 THE International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) has been dealt a massive blow as superstars Roger Federer and Serena Williams have pulled out of the star-studded tournament.

The after-shocks of the government of India’s demonetisation strike left IPTL boss Mahesh Bhupathi with no option but to cut down on the IPTL’s star power this season. The tournament had four franchise teams from India, Japan, UAE (Dubai) and Singapore.

It has already been a tough year for the International Premier Tennis League as it had to reduce its originally intended format of five cities to three. Absence of Federer and Serena will now hit ticket sales in Hyderabad.

Bhupathi, founder and Managing Director of IPTL, said in a media release on Tuesday that the Narendra Modi government’s demonetisation scheme as the prime reason behind the players’ withdrawal.

“We have had challenges this year, and we were hoping to get past them. With the current economic climate in India and the uncertainty of spending money, I reached out to both Roger and Serena to explain the situation. They have been both been very supportive of the IPTL the first two seasons and we look forward to bring them in future years,”

He believes that this tournament will be a stepping platform to meet, greet, share and enjoy game of cricket while adding value to cultural diversity.
